Online tutoring
Why most of our IB and IGCSE work runs online
IB and IGCSE families are not distributed like a local tuition market. An international school in one city may have a single Physics HL teacher and forty students; the tutor who can genuinely teach that course might live two thousand kilometres away. Online is how that gap gets closed, and it is why the majority of what we place is remote.
For you, the practical consequence is that your reach is no longer limited by what you can drive to. A Maths AA HL specialist can fill a timetable from Dubai, Singapore, London and three Indian cities in the same week. That is not possible in home tuition at any rate.
The commercial terms are simpler too. Online is a flat 70/30 split in your favour from the first class to the last — there is no reduced first month the way there is with home tuition. For short engagements, which are common in Diploma work, that makes online meaningfully better paid.

What online tutors earn and when online beats home
You set your fee per class or per month and we publish it unchanged; the family sees it before booking the demo. Our 30% platform fee covers finding and matching students, arranging the demo, collecting fees from the family, chasing late payment, scheduling support, and finding you a replacement student if one stops.
The useful comparison is against home tuition, because the two splits reward different engagement lengths. Home tuition takes half of your first month and then nothing, so it wins decisively on long engagements. Online takes a steady 30% forever, so it wins on short ones. The crossover sits at around six weeks.
That matters because a lot of IB Diploma work is short by nature — four weeks of intensive revision before a session, six weeks of internal-assessment supervision, a predicted-grade push with a deadline attached. For those, online is the better-paid choice as well as the more practical one.
₹1,200 a class × 12 classes = ₹14,400, of which ₹10,080 is yours
₹1,800 an HL class × 10 classes = ₹18,000, of which ₹12,600 is yours
No travel means an evening can hold three paid classes instead of one
Classes you cancel are not billed to the family, so they are not paid

Eligibility
What we look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor
The subject bar is identical to our in-person tutors. What is additional online is the kit and the ability to teach well through a screen, which is a genuinely separate skill.
Subject command at the level you teach
A degree or teaching qualification in the subject, or a track record with IB or IGCSE students at that level. You should be comfortable a level above what you teach.
Knowledge of the IB or IGCSE assessment model
How your stage is actually marked: MYP criteria and task-specific clarifications, DP internal assessment and grade boundaries, or your IGCSE board's papers and mark schemes.
Stable broadband, camera and microphone
A dropped connection mid-explanation costs more goodwill online than a late arrival does in person. A wired connection or a reliable backup such as a mobile hotspot is strongly advised.
A quiet, professional space
A plain background, no interruptions, good lighting on your face. Your camera stays on for the whole class — that is a safeguarding requirement, not a style preference.
Government photo ID for verification
Reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile states that plainly.
A graphics tablet or document cameraHelps, not required
Not required to be accepted, but for maths, physics and chemistry it is close to essential in practice. Teaching algebra with a mouse is slow, and students notice.
How to start
From application to your first paid class
Applying takes about twenty minutes. For online tutors the availability step matters most — it is what determines which time zones you get matched into.
1
Send your profile
List your subjects and levels, select online as your mode, and set your availability as actual hours in your own time zone. Add your fee.
2
Upload your ID and credentials
A government photo ID plus your degree, teaching qualification or examiner evidence, all reviewed by our academic team before your profile goes live.
3
Academic review
We check subject depth against the level you have claimed. If your evidence fits SL rather than HL, or one board rather than two, we will list you accordingly instead of rejecting you.
4
Your verified profile goes live
Showing your subjects, levels, availability in your time zone and your fee, with the verification badge from the ID check.
5
We match you on subject and overlap
You are shortlisted when a family needs your subject and level and their preferred slots overlap your published hours. You see all of that before accepting, and you can decline.
6
Free demo, then you start
The first class is a free demo over video, with your fee already visible to the family. Test your audio, your tablet and your screen share beforehand — the demo is where online tutors win or lose work.

Teaching IB and IGCSE well through a screen
Online tutoring is not in-person tutoring delivered remotely, and treating it that way is why some excellent classroom teachers struggle in their first few sessions. The things that carry a physical classroom — reading the room, leaning over a shoulder to see the working, a glance that tells you a student is lost — are all degraded or absent.
What replaces them is explicit structure. You say what the class will cover at the start. You ask the student to work on the shared surface where you can see it, rather than on paper you cannot. You check understanding by making them explain back, not by asking whether they understood, because online the honest answer to that is almost always yes.
For any subject with working out — mathematics, physics, chemistry, economics with diagrams — a shared writing surface is the whole game. A graphics tablet costs very little and transforms what you can do. The alternative, a document camera pointed at paper, works well too and some tutors prefer it because students see a hand writing at a natural pace.
The other habit worth building is sending something after the class: the annotated board, a photo of the worked solutions, two past-paper questions to try. It takes two minutes, it is what parents notice, and it is the most common reason an online engagement renews month after month.
State the plan at the start and check understanding by making them explain back
Get the student writing on the shared surface, not on paper you cannot see
A graphics tablet or document camera is effectively essential for maths and science
Send the annotated board and two practice questions after every class

Time zones: where your free hours are worth most
Your available hours decide which markets you can serve, and the differences are large enough to be worth planning around. IB and IGCSE tutoring happens after school, so the slots that matter are roughly 4pm to 9pm in the student's local time, plus weekend mornings.
From India, Gulf students are the easiest overlap: the UAE is an hour and a half behind, so a Dubai student's 5pm after-school slot is 6.30pm for you. UK students are four and a half hours behind in winter, which puts their after-school window into your late evening. Singapore and Hong Kong are two and a half hours ahead, so their evening slots fall in your afternoon.
The practical consequence is that a tutor who can teach in the late evening has access to UK and European families that an early-evening-only tutor does not, and a tutor free in the afternoon can take Southeast Asian students nobody else is covering. If your timetable is flexible, publishing a wider window is the single most effective way to get matched more often.
Gulf families are the easiest overlap from India — a 1.5 hour shift
Afternoon availability opens Singapore and Hong Kong, where supply is thin
Late-evening availability opens the UK and Europe at premium rates
Publish real hours you will keep — a missed slot across time zones is hard to re-book

Safeguarding when the classroom is a video call
Nearly every IB and IGCSE student is under 18, and the safeguarding rules apply online exactly as they do in a family's home. They are written to protect you as much as the student.
Your camera stays on, in a professional setting, for the whole class. Classes run on the agreed platform rather than a personal account, so there is a record of what was scheduled. You never record a class without the parent's explicit consent — and if a parent asks you to record, get that consent in writing in the chat where they can see it.
Communication about classes goes through the parent or guardian, or in a group chat that includes them. No private social-media contact with a student under 18, no personal messaging outside the agreed channel, no gifts, loans or money in either direction. If you ever believe a student is at risk of harm, tell us straight away.
Online makes one of these easier and one harder. Easier: there is a natural written record of scheduling and communication if everything stays in the agreed channel. Harder: a student can message you privately on any platform they can find you on, so it is worth deciding in advance that you will redirect those to the parent-inclusive chat rather than answer them.
Camera on, professional setting, for the whole class
No recording without written parental consent in a visible channel
Keep all communication in the agreed channel with a parent included
Redirect private messages from a student to the parent-inclusive chat
What to expect
Filling an online timetable
Because there is no travel, an online timetable can be packed in a way a home one cannot — three classes in an evening instead of one, with ten minutes between them rather than forty. That is the main reason online tutors with the same hourly rate often out-earn home tutors on the same hours.
What fills it fastest, in the order that actually matters: listing more than one subject, listing both IB and IGCSE where you can teach both, publishing a wider availability window, and being honest about your level so demos convert. Tutors who do all four get matched several times more often than single-subject tutors with two narrow evening slots.
It is also worth knowing the seasonal shape. Diploma work peaks January to April before the May session and again in October and November for the November session. IGCSE peaks January to May. The quiet stretch for everyone is June to August, which is when bridging work — IGCSE students stepping up into the Diploma, and retake candidates — keeps a timetable alive.
No travel means three paid classes in an evening instead of one
Listing both IB and IGCSE roughly doubles the requests you see
A wider published window matters more than a lower fee
June to August is quiet — bridging and retake students fill it
Tutor policy
The terms you are agreeing to
Summaries of our tutor policy clauses. The online split and the safeguarding rules are the two to read in full before your first class.
Online classes: 70% to you, 30% platform fee
A flat 70/30 in your favour, unchanged every month for as long as you teach the student. There is no reduced first month the way there is with home tuition, which is what makes online better paid on short engagements.
Finding and matching students, arranging demo classes, collecting fees from families and chasing late payment, scheduling support, and finding you a replacement student if one stops teaching.
Fees for a calendar month's classes are paid on the 1st of the following month by bank transfer or UPI, with a statement listing every student, class, fee and split. September's work is deposited on 1 October.
If a student moves from online to home tuition or back, the split for the new mode applies from the month the change takes effect. In a hybrid arrangement the split is applied per class by mode.
Camera on in a professional setting, classes on the agreed platform, no recording without parental consent, and all communication through a parent or a chat that includes them. No private social-media contact with a minor.
The split in force when a student starts stays that student's split and is never cut mid-engagement. Policy changes are announced at least 30 days ahead and apply only to students who start afterwards.
Give at least 24 hours' notice to move a class. Classes you cancel are not billed to the family and so are not paid. Across time zones a missed slot is particularly hard to re-book, so reliability counts double online.
Tutors are independent professionals, not employees. You handle income tax on your earnings, your monthly statements are your filing record, and any tax we are required to deduct at source appears on the statement.
Online is 70% yours from the first class. There is no reduced opening month, which is what makes it the better-paid option on the short intensive engagements Diploma work produces.
Your reach is not a radius
An HL specialist can fill a week from Dubai, Singapore, London and three Indian cities. No home-tuition timetable can do that at any hourly rate.
No dead time in your day
Three classes in an evening with ten minutes between them, instead of one class and eighty minutes of traffic. Same rate, considerably more earned.
You never chase a family for money
We invoice, collect and follow up on late payment across every currency and country we operate in. A late payer becomes a line on your next payout once received.
You publish the hours, we respect them
Matching only shortlists you where a family's preferred slots overlap the availability you set in your own time zone. No requests at 3am that you have to decline.
Works alongside a school job
No exclusivity, no minimum hours and no travel. Weekday evenings and weekend mornings are exactly the slots international families want most.
Tutor questions
Questions from applying tutors
Is the online split really 70% every month?
Yes. Online is a flat 70% to you and 30% platform fee, unchanged from your first class for as long as you teach that student. Unlike home tuition there is no reduced first month, which is why online pays better on engagements shorter than about six weeks.
Can I teach from outside India?
Yes. Our students are spread across India, the UAE and the wider Gulf, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, and our tutors are too. You publish the hours you are available in your own time zone and we only match you where a family's preferred slots overlap them.
What equipment do I actually need?
Stable broadband, a working camera and microphone, and a quiet professional space are required. A graphics tablet or document camera is not formally required but is close to essential for maths, physics and chemistry — teaching algebra with a mouse is slow and students notice.
Which hours get matched most often?
After-school slots, roughly 4pm to 9pm in the student's local time, plus weekend mornings. From India that means 4–9pm IST for Indian students, 5.30–10.30pm for the Gulf, afternoons for Singapore and Hong Kong, and late evening for the UK and Europe.
Is online or home tuition better paid?
It depends entirely on how long the engagement lasts. Online pays a flat 70%, so it wins on anything shorter than about six weeks. Home tuition takes half of month one and then nothing, so it wins decisively on long engagements — roughly 98% of a two-year one.
Do I have to keep my camera on?
Yes, for the whole class, in a professional setting. That is a safeguarding requirement rather than a preference, because nearly all IB and IGCSE students are minors. Classes also run on the agreed platform rather than a personal account.
Can I record my classes?
Only with the parent's explicit consent, and we would ask you to get that in writing in a chat the parent can see. If a parent requests recordings, the same applies. Never record a class involving a minor on your own initiative.
How do I handle a student messaging me privately?
Redirect it to the chat that includes the parent. No private social-media or personal messaging contact with a student under 18, and no gifts, loans or money in either direction. Deciding this in advance makes it a simple redirect rather than an awkward judgement call.
How many students can I realistically teach online?
More than in home tuition, because there is no travel — three classes in an evening with short gaps is normal. What fills a timetable fastest is listing more than one subject, covering both IB and IGCSE if you can, publishing a wide availability window, and being honest about your level so demos convert.
When is online tutoring quiet?
June to August, once the May session and the IGCSE series are over. That window is filled by bridging work — IGCSE students stepping up into the Diploma — and by retake candidates after results. Covering the November session as well removes most of the seasonality.
When do I get paid, and in what currency?
On the 1st of the month after the classes were taught, by bank transfer or UPI, with an itemised statement per student. September's fees are deposited on 1 October. If the 1st falls on a Sunday or bank holiday the transfer goes out the next working day.
Is there any fee to join?
No. No joining fee, no subscription, no charge to appear in matches and no charge to receive a student request. We earn only from the 30% platform fee on classes that actually took place.
Tell us what you teach, at what level, and the hours you can genuinely keep in your own time zone. We will match you with students whose slots overlap yours. Seventy per cent of every fee is yours from the first class.
IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate Organization, Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel. Applying does not guarantee placement. Last updated 2026-10-26.
