IB Extended Essay and TOK mentor (online) — Gurgaon
Online mentoring on the Diploma core for Gurgaon students: research question design, the Extended Essay's 4,000 words, and the TOK essay and exhibition that together carry the bonus points.
Role Overview
The core is worth three points and is the part of the Diploma students treat as optional until DP2, when it becomes the reason they miss an offer. This role exists to get the research question right in DP1, which is the single decision that determines whether the essay is writable at all.
Job Description
Most failing Extended Essays fail on the research question: too broad, not answerable with available sources, or not actually a question. Fixing that early saves the entire essay.
TOK essays are written against prescribed titles released by the IB and have to argue with knowledge claims rather than opinions, using examples the student can defend.
The TOK exhibition needs three objects and a commentary tied to an IA prompt, and students usually pick objects they cannot say anything interesting about.
This is mentoring that complements the school supervisor rather than replacing them. The school's supervision record and reflection sessions still stand.
All teaching on this role is online, from your own device and connection. Families expect a shared whiteboard, screen share and written working they can keep afterwards, not a camera pointed at a notebook.
Online classes pay you 70% of the fee every month, with no first-month split and no joining fee. You set the fee, we publish it unchanged, and payouts land on the 1st of each month with an itemised statement.
Responsibilities
- Interrogate and narrow the research question before any writing starts.
- Hold students to a written timeline with interim word-count targets.
- Teach argument and counter-argument in TOK with examples the student can actually defend.
- Plan each session around the student's current school unit rather than a syllabus order of your own.
- Set and publish your own fee, and decline any student who is not a fit.
- Report progress to the family at the review points agreed when the engagement starts.
- Teach from a quiet space with a stable connection, and send written working after each session.
Requirements
- Experience supervising Extended Essays in at least two subject groups, against the current criteria.
- A clear grasp of the TOK essay and exhibition assessment instruments.
- Academic referencing and research ethics, including a working understanding of academic honesty rules.
- A degree in the subject or a closely related one. Teaching experience counts, but subject knowledge is checked first.
- Verified government ID and at least one credential we can confirm with the issuing institution.
- Two references we can contact, at least one from a school, college or family you have taught.
- A quiet room, a connection that holds a video call, and a device that handles screen share and a writing tablet.
Nice To Have
- Experience as a school Extended Essay coordinator or TOK teacher.
- Experience with the specific school's internal assessment calendar.
- Availability for a longer weekend slot in the eight weeks before mocks.
Benefits
- You set your own fee and we publish it unchanged, so there is no negotiation after you have taught.
- Students are matched to you by programme, subject and level before you accept.
- No joining fee, no subscription and no exclusivity - teach elsewhere as well.
- Monthly payouts on the 1st with an itemised statement.
- Teach from anywhere, in the hours you have told us you are available.
