Why this work crosses borders so easily
The reason international-curriculum tutoring travels is that the curriculum does not change with the country. A Maths AA Higher Level student in Dubai, Bengaluru, Kuala Lumpur and Surrey is working from the same syllabus towards the same papers in the same examination session. The syllabus you already know is the product, and geography is close to irrelevant to it.
What is scarce is depth. Any given international school might have one Physics HL teacher, one Economics HL teacher, and nobody at all who can supervise an Extended Essay in Psychology. When those students need help, the nearest qualified person is frequently in another country. That gap is what we match across.
For you the practical effect is that your addressable market stops being your city and becomes every time zone your free hours overlap. A tutor with a wide evening window can hold students on three continents in one week, which is not a theoretical possibility — it is how a good share of our tutors actually work.
Same syllabus, same papers, same sessions — wherever the student is
Subject depth is scarce in individual schools, which is the gap you fill

You set your fee and we publish it unchanged. Because this is online work, the terms are the simplest we have: a flat 70% to you and a 30% platform fee, every month, from your first class to your last. There is no reduced opening month the way there is with in-person home tuition.
That 30% covers more than matching when the work crosses borders. It covers invoicing families in their own currency, collecting across different payment systems, chasing late payment in another country and time zone, scheduling across offsets, and finding you a replacement student if one stops. Those are the parts that are genuinely difficult to do yourself as an individual tutor working internationally.
Rates differ substantially by market, and it is worth knowing where you sit. Gulf and UK families generally pay the most for equivalent work, Singapore and Hong Kong are strong, and Indian rates are lower but the volume is much larger. Many tutors deliberately build a mixed timetable for exactly that reason — a few higher-rate international students and a base of steady local ones.

What we look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor
The subject bar is the same wherever you teach. What is additional internationally is a reliable setup and your own responsibility for local work and tax rules.
Subject command at the level you teach
A degree or teaching qualification in the subject, or a track record with IB or IGCSE students at that level. You should be comfortable a level above what you teach.
Knowledge of the assessment model
Your IGCSE board's papers and mark schemes, or the Diploma's internal assessment, HL and SL distinctions and grade boundaries. This is what makes your knowledge portable across countries.
Work authorisation and tax compliance where you live
Yours to establish, not ours to grant. IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer. Whether you may accept paid freelance work, and what you owe on it, is governed by the country you are physically in.
Reliable broadband and a professional space
A stable connection, working camera and microphone, quiet room and plain background. Across time zones a dropped or missed class is hard to re-book, so a backup connection genuinely matters.
Government photo ID for verification
Passport or national photo ID, reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile states that.
Experience across more than one school systemHelps, not required
Not required, but valuable. A tutor who has taught in two countries reads an unfamiliar school's expectations faster, and international families notice it.
How to start
From application to your first paid class
The application takes about twenty minutes. For international tutors, the availability step is the one that determines everything — it decides which markets you can reach.
1
Send your profile
List your subjects and levels, your boards, and your availability as real hours in your own time zone. Add your fee. Online is your mode by default for international work.
2
Upload your ID and credentials
Passport or national photo ID plus your degree, teaching qualification and any examiner or moderator evidence. Examiner claims are verified before we display them.
3
Academic review
We check subject depth and board knowledge against what you claimed. If your evidence fits one board or one level rather than both, we list you accordingly rather than reject you.
4
Your verified profile goes live
Showing your subjects, levels, your availability converted into each market's local time, and your fee, with the verification badge from the ID check.
5
We match on subject and overlap
You are shortlisted where a family needs your subject and level and their after-school window overlaps your published hours. You see the country, school system, level and target session before accepting.
6
Free demo, then you start
The first class is a free demo over video, with your fee already visible to the family. Your first payout lands on the 1st of the following month.

Which markets your free hours actually reach
International tutoring runs in the after-school window, which is roughly 4pm to 9pm in the student's own local time, plus weekend mornings. Everything about which markets you can serve follows from where that window lands in your time zone, so it is worth working out properly rather than guessing.
From India, the Gulf is the easiest overlap in the world: the UAE is only an hour and a half behind, so a Dubai student's 5pm slot is 6.30pm for you — an entirely normal tutoring hour. Singapore and Hong Kong are two and a half hours ahead, which puts their after-school window into your afternoon, and that is a market where tutor supply is thin because most people's afternoons are already committed. The UK sits four and a half to five and a half hours behind depending on the season, so British families fall into your late evening.
From the UK, the pattern inverts. Gulf students land in your early afternoon, Indian students in your early afternoon through to late afternoon, and Southeast Asia in your morning. A UK-based tutor with daytime availability is unusually well placed, because that is exactly when most locally-based tutors are unavailable.
The genuinely useful insight is that the hours nobody wants locally are often the hours a foreign market most needs. If your availability is at an awkward time where you live, it is almost certainly prime time somewhere else.

What to expect
Two exam sessions, and why covering both removes your quiet season
The IB Diploma runs two examination sessions a year and they sit at opposite ends of the calendar. May is much the larger and covers most northern-hemisphere schools — India, the Gulf, the UK, Europe, North America. November serves the southern hemisphere, chiefly Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and parts of South America, along with a number of schools across South and Southeast Asia.
For a tutor working internationally, that is a structural advantage that local tutors do not have. A tutor serving only May-session students peaks hard from January to April and then falls off a cliff in May. A tutor who also takes November-session students picks up a second peak from September to November, and the two together leave almost no dead months.
IGCSE adds a third rhythm. Cambridge runs May/June and October/November series, and several Edexcel subjects offer a January series, so an IGCSE tutor with students on more than one board has entry points spread across the year rather than one annual cliff edge.
If you want the steadiest possible international timetable, the combination that achieves it is: both IB sessions, both IGCSE boards, and at least two subjects. Tutors who do all three rarely report a quiet month.

Teaching a student in a school system you have never worked in
A fair question from tutors new to international work is whether they can teach a student at a school they know nothing about, in a country they have never lived in. The answer is yes, with one caveat worth taking seriously.
The curriculum is genuinely identical, so the subject teaching transfers without modification. What varies is the school's local practice: when internal deadlines fall, how strictly the school enforces draft submission, whether predicted grades are issued generously or conservatively, how much past-paper work the department sets, and what the school's own assessment calendar looks like. None of that is in the syllabus and none of it is guessable.
So ask, in the first class. What are the internal assessment deadlines? When are the mocks? What has the teacher actually covered so far, and in what order? Most students can answer, and the ones who cannot will have a parent who can. Fifteen minutes of that at the start saves you from teaching to a schedule the school is not following.
The second thing worth asking about is language. Many international students are working in English as an additional language at a high academic level, and a student who understands the physics perfectly may lose marks because they cannot produce the required written explanation. Diagnosing that early changes what you spend your hours on — and it is one of the commonest reasons a bright international student underperforms.
The syllabus is identical; the school's local calendar and practice are not
Ask in class one: internal deadlines, mock dates, what has actually been covered
Check whether the real gap is subject knowledge or written expression in English
Expect to adapt to the school's order of teaching, not the syllabus order
What to expect
Getting paid across borders, and what is your responsibility
We invoice the family in their own currency and through their own local payment method, collect the fee, and chase it if it is late. You are paid monthly on the 1st for the previous month's classes, with an itemised statement showing every student, class, fee and split. You never invoice a family abroad and you never pursue a cross-border payment, which is the part that makes independent international tutoring difficult.
What remains yours is your own compliance. IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer, and we do not sponsor visas or grant work rights anywhere. Whether you may lawfully accept paid freelance work is governed by the country you are physically sitting in, not by where your student is. The same goes for tax: the income is yours and so is the obligation on it.
In practice this is straightforward for most people and genuinely worth checking for some. If you are on a visa that restricts work, or employed somewhere with an exclusivity clause, or resident somewhere that treats foreign-sourced freelance income distinctively, resolve it before you take a student rather than after your first payout. Your monthly statements give you a clean record whatever your position turns out to be.
We invoice, collect and chase in the family's own currency and payment system
Your own country's rules govern your right to work, not the student's
Tax on your earnings is yours; statements give you the filing record
Check visa restrictions and employer exclusivity clauses before your first student
Tutor policy
The terms you are agreeing to
Summaries of our tutor policy clauses. The compliance point is not a policy clause but a legal matter for you, and it is the one to settle before you start.
Your compliance is your responsibility
IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer or visa sponsor. Whether you may accept paid freelance work, and what tax you owe on it, is governed by the country you are physically in. Confirm your position before you take a student.
A flat 70/30 in your favour every month with no reduced first month. Internationally the platform fee also covers invoicing in the family's currency, cross-border collection and chasing late payment in another time zone.
Fees for a calendar month's classes are paid on the 1st of the following month, with a statement listing every student, class, fee and split. If the 1st is a Sunday or bank holiday the transfer goes the next working day.
The split in force when a student starts stays that student's split and is never cut mid-engagement. Policy changes are announced at least 30 days ahead and apply only to students starting afterwards.
Camera on in a professional setting, classes on the agreed platform, no recording without parental consent, and all communication through a parent or a chat that includes them. No private social-media contact with a minor.
You teach, explain and give feedback on the student's own drafts. You never write an internal assessment, Extended Essay or coursework piece. IB and board malpractice rules apply identically in every country.
At least 24 hours to move a class. Classes you cancel are not billed and so are not paid. Across time zones a missed slot is particularly hard to re-book, so reliability counts for more here than anywhere.
Any student, market, timing or subject, without a reason and without penalty — including slots that fall at an hour you would rather not teach. Your published availability is respected in matching.
The syllabus is identical worldwide, so the only real constraint is which after-school windows your free hours overlap. A wide evening reaches three continents.
Awkward local hours are prime time elsewhere
An afternoon free in India is the Singapore and Hong Kong after-school window, where tutor supply is thinnest. A UK daytime slot is Gulf and Indian prime time.
Two sessions means no quiet season
May-session students peak January to April; November-session students peak September to November. Covering both, plus two IGCSE boards, leaves almost no dead months.
Cross-border payment is handled
We invoice in the family's currency, collect through their local payment method and chase late payment in their time zone. That is the hardest part of independent international tutoring, and it is not yours.
Higher-rate markets are reachable
Gulf and UK families generally pay most for equivalent work. A mixed timetable of a few international students and a steady local base is the pattern most tutors converge on.
Depth travels better than proximity
A school with one Physics HL teacher and no Psychology EE supervisor has students who need you regardless of which country you live in. Scarcity is what you are being paid for.
Tutor questions
Questions from applying tutors
Can I teach IB and IGCSE students in other countries from where I live?
Yes — that is what this lane is. The IB and Cambridge curricula are identical worldwide, so your subject teaching transfers without modification. You publish your availability in your own time zone and we match you where a family's after-school window overlaps it.
Which markets can my hours actually reach?
Work backwards from the 4pm to 9pm local after-school window. From India: the Gulf falls at 5.30–11.30pm IST, Singapore and Hong Kong at 1.30–6.30pm, the UK at 9.30pm–2.30am in winter. From the UK the pattern inverts, with Gulf and Indian students landing in your daytime.
Which markets pay best?
UK and European families generally pay most for equivalent work, followed by the Gulf, Singapore and Hong Kong. Indian rates are lower but the volume is much larger. Most tutors build a mixed timetable deliberately — a few higher-rate international students on a base of steadier local ones.
Do I need a work permit or visa to do this?
Possibly, and it depends entirely on where you are physically sitting rather than where your student is. IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer or visa sponsor. If your visa restricts work, or your employer has an exclusivity clause, resolve that before taking a student.
Who handles tax on what I earn?
You do. You are an independent professional, not an employee, so the income and the obligation on it are yours, governed by where you are resident. Your monthly statements list every student, class, fee and split, which gives you a clean record for filing whatever your position is.
How do families in other countries pay me?
They do not pay you directly. We invoice the family in their own currency through their local payment method, collect it, and chase it if it is late. You are paid monthly on the 1st with an itemised statement, regardless of when the family actually paid.
Can I teach a student at a school I know nothing about?
Yes, with one caveat. The syllabus is identical, but the school's local practice is not — internal deadlines, mock dates, how much the department has covered and in what order. Ask about all of that in your first class; fifteen minutes there saves you teaching to a schedule the school is not following.
What are the May and November sessions?
The IB Diploma's two annual examination sessions. May is much larger and covers most northern-hemisphere schools; November serves the southern hemisphere and parts of Asia. Tutoring for May peaks January to April and for November September to November, so covering both removes your quiet season.
Does daylight saving affect my matches?
Yes, for UK and European students — their after-school window shifts by an hour twice a year while Indian and Gulf time stays fixed. Worth a quick check with those families each spring and autumn so a long-standing slot does not quietly drift.
What equipment do I need for international online teaching?
Stable broadband, a camera, a microphone and a quiet professional space, plus a graphics tablet or document camera for anything with working out. A backup connection matters more here than locally, because a class missed across time zones is genuinely hard to re-book.
Are the safeguarding rules the same in every country?
Ours are. Camera on in a professional setting, classes on the agreed platform, no recording without parental consent, and all communication through a parent or a chat that includes them. Academic-honesty rules on internal assessment and Extended Essays also apply identically everywhere.
Is there a fee to join?
No. No joining fee, no subscription, no charge to appear in matches and no charge to receive a request. We earn only from the 30% platform fee on classes that actually took place.
Publish your hours and reach every market they touch
Tell us what you teach, at what level, and the hours you can genuinely keep where you live. We will work out which markets that reaches and match you accordingly. Seventy per cent of every fee is yours.
