Worldwide (online) Freelance, part time or full time Mathematics

Role Overview

Mathematics is the single largest source of requests we receive, and the hardest to staff. If you can teach both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, at both levels, you will not be short of students.

Job Description

IB and IGCSE maths tutor jobs at IB Gram are freelance engagements covering IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level, IGCSE Core and Extended mathematics, and Additional Mathematics. Mathematics is our most requested subject. Home tuition is 50-50 for month one and 100% yours after; online is 70% yours, paid monthly on the 1st.

Mathematics generates more requests than any other subject on the platform, and it is also where we most often cannot find anyone suitable. The reason is not a shortage of people who are good at maths. It is that the IB restructured its mathematics offering into four distinct routes, and most tutors have genuinely taught only one or two of them.

Add IGCSE's tiered structure on top — Core and Extended on Cambridge, Foundation and Higher on Edexcel, plus Additional Mathematics for stronger candidates — and the number of genuinely distinct courses a maths tutor might be asked for is large. A tutor who claims "IB and IGCSE maths" without specifying is usually competent in a subset and will be found out in a demo class.

So the value here is in specificity and in breadth. Be exact about which routes and levels you can teach, and if you can honestly cover several, say so — because that combination is scarce and it is what fills a timetable fastest.

What maths tutors earn

You set your own fee and we publish it unchanged. Mathematics sits at the top of the rate range in most markets precisely because the supply problem is real, and Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the single best-paid thing you can teach on this platform. Rates climb further from January as the May session approaches.

Our share depends only on mode. Home tuition is split 50-50 for the first month with each new student and is then 100% yours for as long as you teach them. Online is a flat 70/30 in your favour, every month, with no reduced first month.

One pattern specific to maths is worth knowing: students very often want a second subject from the same tutor, usually Physics. If you can teach both, that is one engagement at your combined fee with no extra travel and no extra slot — the most efficient thing available to you here.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Mathematics students one to one, matched to you by programme, subject and level before you accept.
  • Plan each session around the student's current school unit rather than a fixed syllabus of your own.
  • Prepare students for the assessment model of their stage, including internal assessment and exam technique where it applies.
  • Set and publish your own fee, and decline any student who is not a fit.
  • Keep agreed session times, and give notice through IB Gram if a session must move.
  • Report progress to the family at the review points agreed at the start of the engagement.
  • Teach online across time zones using your own device and connection.
  • Cover Mathematics across the levels you list on your profile, including Higher Level where you claim it.

Requirements

  • Mathematics to degree level or equivalent. A degree in mathematics, engineering, physics, economics or a quantitative field, or a teaching qualification in maths. For HL you need to be genuinely comfortable above the syllabus.
  • Honest clarity about which routes you teach. Name them: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL, AI SL, IGCSE Core, IGCSE Extended, Additional Maths. Do not list a route you have not taught — this is the subject where a demo class finds that out immediately.
  • Knowledge of the assessment model. The papers in each route and their weightings, the calculator and no-calculator split, and how the mathematics internal assessment is marked at Diploma level.
  • Government photo ID for verification. Reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile says so.
  • A way to write mathematics on a shared screen, if teaching online. A graphics tablet or document camera. In maths this is effectively a requirement rather than a nice-to-have — teaching algebra with a mouse is slow enough that students disengage.

Nice To Have

  • Familiarity with a graphics display calculator. Not required to be accepted, but GDC technique is examined directly in IB mathematics and many students lose marks on it. Knowing a common model well is a real differentiator.

Benefits

  • Our highest-demand subject, across every programme and level
  • Home tuition: 100% of the fee is yours from the second month
  • AA and AI at both levels, IGCSE Core and Extended, Additional Maths
  • Monthly payouts on the 1st with an itemised statement
  • Academic honesty on the maths exploration
  • Home tuition: 50-50 for month one, then 100% yours
  • Online classes: 70% to you, 30% platform fee
  • Teach only what you listed
