Role Overview
0478 splits cleanly into a theory paper students find dull and a problem-solving paper they find hard. Most of them neglect the first and panic about the second. Teaching it well means making the theory concrete and the programming routine.
Job Description
Paper 1 covers data representation, networks, hardware and security, and is marked on precise terminology that students approximate and lose marks for.
Paper 2 needs algorithm design in Cambridge pseudocode plus trace tables, and the ability to write and debug working Python under time.
Online is the natural mode here: a shared editor and screen share teaches code better than sitting beside the student.
All teaching on this role is online, from your own device and connection. Families expect a shared whiteboard, screen share and written working they can keep afterwards, not a camera pointed at a notebook.
Online classes pay you 70% of the fee every month, with no first-month split and no joining fee. You set the fee, we publish it unchanged, and payouts land on the 1st of each month with an itemised statement.
Responsibilities
- Drill data representation and networking terminology to exam wording.
- Teach trace tables as a reliable procedure rather than guesswork.
- Set short programming tasks between sessions and review the code line by line.
- Plan each session around the student's current school unit rather than a syllabus order of your own.
- Set and publish your own fee, and decline any student who is not a fit.
- Report progress to the family at the review points agreed when the engagement starts.
- Teach from a quiet space with a stable connection, and send written working after each session.
Requirements
- 0478 Papers 1 and 2 to full standard, including Cambridge pseudocode conventions.
- Python to the level the practical tasks need, with debugging taught as a method.
- Precision about terminology in the theory paper.
- A degree in the subject or a closely related one. Teaching experience counts, but subject knowledge is checked first.
- Verified government ID and at least one credential we can confirm with the issuing institution.
- Two references we can contact, at least one from a school, college or family you have taught.
- A quiet room, a connection that holds a video call, and a device that handles screen share and a writing tablet.
Nice To Have
- Experience taking students from 0478 into IB Computer Science or A Level.
- Experience with the specific school's internal assessment calendar.
