Mathematics tutoring
Why maths tutors are the hardest role we fill
Mathematics generates more requests than any other subject on the platform, and it is also where we most often cannot find anyone suitable. The reason is not a shortage of people who are good at maths. It is that the IB restructured its mathematics offering into four distinct routes, and most tutors have genuinely taught only one or two of them.
Add IGCSE's tiered structure on top — Core and Extended on Cambridge, Foundation and Higher on Edexcel, plus Additional Mathematics for stronger candidates — and the number of genuinely distinct courses a maths tutor might be asked for is large. A tutor who claims "IB and IGCSE maths" without specifying is usually competent in a subset and will be found out in a demo class.
So the value here is in specificity and in breadth. Be exact about which routes and levels you can teach, and if you can honestly cover several, say so — because that combination is scarce and it is what fills a timetable fastest.

You set your own fee and we publish it unchanged. Mathematics sits at the top of the rate range in most markets precisely because the supply problem is real, and Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the single best-paid thing you can teach on this platform. Rates climb further from January as the May session approaches.
Our share depends only on mode. Home tuition is split 50-50 for the first month with each new student and is then 100% yours for as long as you teach them. Online is a flat 70/30 in your favour, every month, with no reduced first month.
One pattern specific to maths is worth knowing: students very often want a second subject from the same tutor, usually Physics. If you can teach both, that is one engagement at your combined fee with no extra travel and no extra slot — the most efficient thing available to you here.
Maths AA HL is the best-paid single course on the platform
A ₹20,000/month HL home student pays you ₹10,000 in month 1, then ₹20,000
Online at ₹1,800 an HL class × 10 classes = ₹18,000, of which ₹12,600 is yours
Maths plus Physics for one student is one engagement at your combined fee

Eligibility
What we look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor
Maths applications get specific scrutiny on which routes you claim, because this is the subject where an over-claimed profile is exposed fastest.
Mathematics to degree level or equivalent
A degree in mathematics, engineering, physics, economics or a quantitative field, or a teaching qualification in maths. For HL you need to be genuinely comfortable above the syllabus.
Honest clarity about which routes you teach
Name them: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL, AI SL, IGCSE Core, IGCSE Extended, Additional Maths. Do not list a route you have not taught — this is the subject where a demo class finds that out immediately.
Knowledge of the assessment model
The papers in each route and their weightings, the calculator and no-calculator split, and how the mathematics internal assessment is marked at Diploma level.
Government photo ID for verification
Reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile says so.
A way to write mathematics on a shared screen, if teaching online
A graphics tablet or document camera. In maths this is effectively a requirement rather than a nice-to-have — teaching algebra with a mouse is slow enough that students disengage.
Familiarity with a graphics display calculatorHelps, not required
Not required to be accepted, but GDC technique is examined directly in IB mathematics and many students lose marks on it. Knowing a common model well is a real differentiator.
How to start
From application to your first paid class
The application takes about twenty minutes. The step that matters most for maths is listing your routes precisely — it determines every request you receive.
1
Send your profile
List each maths course you can teach by name and level — AA HL, AI SL, IGCSE Extended and so on — plus any second subject such as Physics. Add your mode, availability and fee.
2
Upload your ID and credentials
A government photo ID plus your degree, teaching qualification or examiner evidence. Examiner and moderator claims are verified before we display them.
3
Academic review of your claimed routes
We check depth against the specific routes you listed. If your evidence supports AA but not AI, or SL but not HL, we list what it supports rather than rejecting the application.
4
Your verified profile goes live
Showing each maths route and level you teach, any second subject, your mode, availability and fee, with the verification badge from the ID check.
5
We send you matched students
You see the exact course, level, target session and what has gone wrong before accepting. Requests are specific here — families know whether they need AA or AI.
6
Free demo, then you start
The first class is a free demo with your fee already visible. In maths, demos convert well: a student with a specific topic they cannot do recognises quickly whether you can fix it.

The four IB maths routes, and why tutors get caught out
IB mathematics is taught as two subjects, each at two levels: Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation. These replaced the older Mathematics HL, Mathematical Methods SL and Mathematical Studies courses entirely, and a tutor who has been away from the IB for a few years will find the landscape genuinely different rather than renamed.
Analysis and Approaches is the more traditionally pure route — algebraic fluency, calculus, proof, trigonometry, and at Higher Level a substantial amount of work expected without a calculator. It is the route universities generally prefer for mathematics, engineering and physics, and AA HL is the hardest and best-paid course on the platform.
Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, and this is where tutors most often over-claim. The assumption that AI is simply an easier version of AA is wrong and costs demo classes. AI HL in particular carries substantial statistical content — regression, hypothesis testing, distributions — along with graph theory, matrices and Voronoi diagrams, much of which an AA specialist has never taught. It is also the route where the graphics calculator is used most heavily, because the course is designed around technology rather than hand computation.
The practical upshot: AI HL has the thinnest tutor supply of any maths course we try to fill. If you can genuinely teach it, say so prominently, because very few people can.

IGCSE maths: tiers, and the decision that follows a student for years
At IGCSE, mathematics is tiered. Cambridge runs Core and Extended; Pearson Edexcel runs Foundation and Higher, with a Further Pure option that goes beyond what Cambridge Extended covers. Schools decide entry, usually late in Year 10, and the decision has consequences well past the exam.
The Core tier caps the attainable grade, typically around a grade 4 or C equivalent. That is often enough to satisfy a school-leaving requirement, but it can close off IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and A-level mathematics entirely. A student placed on Core in Year 10 may find at sixth-form selection that the route they want is no longer open.
You will be asked about this, and you should answer honestly. The most useful thing a maths tutor does in the first month is form a clear view: is this student an Extended candidate who is simply behind and can be caught up, or a genuine Core candidate for whom Extended would produce a worse outcome than a strong Core result? Both answers are legitimate. Hedging is what leaves a family making the decision blind.
Additional Mathematics is worth mentioning because it is a small, well-paid niche. It is taken by stronger candidates alongside Extended as a bridge to A-level or IB Higher Level, it covers genuine pre-calculus material, and almost nobody tutors it. If you can, list it.

The mathematics internal assessment, and where the line is
Every IB Diploma mathematics student, on all four routes, produces an internal assessment — an exploration of around twelve to twenty pages on a mathematical topic of their own choosing. It carries roughly 20% of the final grade and it is the single most common reason a Diploma maths family contacts us.
The failure is nearly always the same, and it happens at the start. A student picks a topic that is either mathematically trivial, impossibly broad, or has no personal engagement behind it, and nobody catches it until a first draft exists. Helping a student find a topic that is genuinely interesting to them, mathematically substantial enough for their level, and achievable in the space available, is the highest-leverage hour you will spend with them.
The boundary is absolute and you should be clear about it from the first conversation. You may discuss topic choice, explain the assessment criteria, teach the mathematics the exploration requires, and give feedback on the student's own written drafts. You may not write any of it, supply the mathematics for them to transcribe, or correct their work in a way that makes it yours rather than theirs.
IB malpractice findings fall on the student, not the tutor, and the consequence can be the loss of the entire diploma rather than one subject. Parents occasionally push on this. Our tutor policy puts the boundary in writing specifically so that you can point at it rather than argue it, and so that you can decline without it becoming a negotiation.

What to expect
Teaching maths online: the kit question
Maths is the subject where online teaching is hardest to improvise, and the reason is simply that mathematics is written rather than spoken. You cannot explain a substitution verbally at the speed a student needs to see it, and a mouse is far too slow to write with.
So a shared writing surface is not optional in practice. A graphics tablet is the usual answer and an inexpensive one transforms what you can do — you write naturally, in colour, and the student watches the working appear at the pace they can follow. The alternative is a document camera pointed at paper, which some tutors prefer precisely because students see a hand writing at a natural speed and the setup is closer to sitting beside them.
The other half of it is getting the student to write where you can see. A student working on paper off-camera is a student whose mistakes you cannot see, and in maths the mistake is the entire diagnostic information. Insist they work on the shared surface, or on paper held up to their camera, every time.
One IB-specific point: graphics calculator technique is directly examined, and marks are routinely lost on it by students who understand the mathematics perfectly. Being able to screen-share a calculator emulator, or at minimum to talk a student through the exact keystrokes on their own model, is a differentiator worth having.
A graphics tablet or document camera is effectively required for maths
Make the student work on the shared surface — their errors are your diagnostics
GDC technique is examined directly and loses marks for able students

Tutor policy
The terms you are agreeing to
Summaries of our tutor policy clauses. For maths tutors the academic-honesty clause is the one that will actually come up, because of the internal assessment.
Academic honesty on the maths exploration
You discuss topic choice, teach the mathematics, explain the criteria and give feedback on the student's own drafts. You never write it, supply mathematics to transcribe, or correct it into being your work. A breach is grounds for removal.
Home tuition: 50-50 for month one, then 100% yours
Each new home student's first month fee is split evenly as our one-time fee for the match. From month two we take nothing for as long as you keep teaching them, per student.
A flat 70/30 in your favour every month with no reduced first month — the better-paid option for the short pre-exam intensives that are common in maths.
Teach only the subjects and levels on your profile. In maths that means only the routes you named — taking an AI HL student when you listed AA is how a demo class goes badly and a family loses confidence.
Fees for a calendar month's classes are paid on the 1st of the following month, with a statement listing every student, class, fee and split. We invoice the family and chase late payment.
Teach home students in a common area with an adult in the house. Online, camera on in a professional setting and no recording without parental consent. Communication goes through a parent or a chat including them.
The split in force when a student starts stays that student's split and is never cut mid-engagement. Changes are announced at least 30 days ahead and apply only to students starting afterwards.
Tutors are independent professionals, not employees. Income tax on your earnings is yours to handle, your monthly statements are your filing record, and any tax we must deduct at source appears on the statement.
Mathematics generates more requests than anything else and is where we most frequently have nobody suitable. Capable maths tutors are not waiting for work here.
AI HL is nearly unstaffed
Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level has the thinnest tutor supply of any course we fill, because AA specialists have usually never taught its statistics and discrete content.
Requests are specific
Families know whether they need AA or AI, HL or SL, Core or Extended. You see the exact course before accepting, so you are never guessing what you have agreed to teach.
Maths plus Physics doubles your fee per slot
Maths students very often want Physics from the same tutor. One engagement, your combined fee, no extra travel and no extra slot — the most efficient thing available here.
Demos convert well in maths
A student with a specific topic they cannot do knows within twenty minutes whether you can fix it. If you are good, the free demo works in your favour more than any profile text.
Home tuition becomes 100% yours
After month one we take nothing from home tuition. Maths engagements tend to run for terms rather than weeks, which is exactly the shape that split rewards.
Tutor questions
Questions from applying tutors
What are the four IB maths routes?
Analysis and Approaches at Higher and Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level. They replaced the older Mathematics HL, Mathematical Methods SL and Mathematical Studies courses entirely, so if you have been away from the IB for a few years the landscape is genuinely different.
Is Applications and Interpretation just an easier version of AA?
No, and assuming so is the most common way maths tutors lose a demo class. AI is the modelling and statistics route. AI HL carries substantial statistical content — regression, hypothesis testing, distributions — plus graph theory, matrices and Voronoi diagrams, much of which an AA specialist has never taught.
Which maths course is hardest for you to find tutors for?
Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, by a clear margin. Most strong maths tutors come from a pure background and have never taught its statistics and discrete mathematics. If you can genuinely teach AI HL, list it prominently — very few people can.
How much do maths tutors earn here?
You set your own fee, and mathematics sits at the top of the range in most markets because the supply problem is real. Maths AA HL is the best-paid single course on the platform. Our share is fixed by mode: home tuition 50-50 for month one then 100% yours, online a flat 70% yours.
Do I need a graphics tablet to teach online?
In practice yes. Mathematics is written rather than spoken, and a mouse is far too slow to write with — students disengage. An inexpensive graphics tablet transforms what you can do, and a document camera pointed at paper is a good alternative that some tutors prefer.
Can I help with the maths internal assessment?
Yes, and it is some of the most in-demand work we place. You discuss topic choice, teach the mathematics the exploration requires, explain the criteria and critique the student's own drafts. You never write it or supply mathematics for them to transcribe. IB malpractice findings fall on the student and can cost the whole diploma.
Should a student take IGCSE Core or Extended maths?
Form a clear view in the first month and say it plainly. Core caps the attainable grade at around a 4 or C and can close off IB Maths AA HL and A-level maths entirely. Ask yourself whether this is an Extended candidate who is behind and catchable, or a genuine Core candidate for whom a strong Core result beats a weak Extended one.
What is Additional Mathematics and should I list it?
It is taken by stronger IGCSE candidates alongside Extended as a bridge to A-level or IB Higher Level, covering genuine pre-calculus material. Volume is low but almost nobody tutors it and the rates are good. If you can teach it, list it.
Does graphics calculator technique matter?
Yes — it is examined directly in IB mathematics and able students routinely lose marks on it despite understanding the maths. Being able to screen-share an emulator, or talk a student through exact keystrokes on their own model, is a genuine differentiator.
Can I teach maths and physics to the same student?
Yes, and it is common — maths students very often want physics from the same tutor. It counts as one engagement at your combined fee, with no extra travel and no extra slot, which makes it the most efficient thing available to you here.
Should I list every maths route to get more students?
No. List only what you have actually taught. Maths is the subject where an over-claimed profile is exposed fastest — a student with a specific topic they cannot do will know within twenty minutes. Our policy requires you to teach only what is on your profile.
When is maths tutoring busiest?
January to April, before the IB May session and the IGCSE May/June series, and again September to November for the IB November session. Mathematics is also the subject most likely to be wanted year-round, because students who fall behind in maths rarely catch up without help.
List exactly which maths courses you can teach — AA HL, AI HL, IGCSE Extended, Additional Maths — and at what level. Mathematics is the subject we most often cannot staff, so a precise profile gets matched quickly.
