Online IB, IGCSE and admissions-test tutors across the Netherlands

The Netherlands has 39 IB World Schools, a mid-sized but unusually structured community by European standards. What makes it distinctive is the Dutch International Schools network: roughly forty English-medium campuses, government co-funded and linked to Dutch state schools, teaching the International Primary Curriculum and IB programmes at fees a fraction of a typical fully private international school. Alongside that network sit fully private IB and British-curriculum schools, plus a smaller Cambridge IGCSE sector concentrated in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

That structure changes who ends up studying the IB. In many countries the IB is a private-school product; in the Netherlands a Dutch national family with no international background can enrol a child in a subsidised DIS place and follow the full continuum through to the Diploma Programme without private-school fees. It also means Dutch and expatriate students often sit in the same IB classroom, something rarer in fully private international-school markets, and a school's fee structure tells you almost nothing about whether it runs IB, IGCSE, or both.

Geography concentrates in the Randstad - Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht - with a second, smaller cluster around Eindhoven's technology sector, and thinner provision further north and east in cities like Groningen and Maastricht. A family relocating to a smaller Dutch city often finds no local specialist for a specific HL subject or an unusual IGCSE combination at all, which is the gap online tutoring is built to close rather than a shortage of IB schools generally.

For most households, the practical question isn't whether an IB or Cambridge school exists nearby - across the Randstad, it usually does - but whether a subject-specific specialist is available outside class hours for the exact course and level a child is sitting. A school running six students through HL Chemistry rarely has a private specialist for that combination on staff. That gap is what drives most Dutch families toward an online IB or IGCSE tutor rather than someone local.

Dutch secondary education sorts students early into three tracks after primary school: VMBO, a four-year vocational-preparatory route; HAVO, five years leading to applied-sciences (HBO) study; and VWO, six years designed for research-university entry. VWO itself splits into atheneum and gymnasium streams, the latter adding Latin and Greek. None of this maps directly onto the IB or Cambridge system, which is exactly why a family moving between a Dutch state school and an international one needs the comparison spelled out rather than assumed.

A VWO diploma and a completed IB Diploma sit at a broadly similar level for Dutch research-university entry, which is why Nuffic treats the IB Diploma as equivalent to VWO rather than to HAVO. Cambridge IGCSE, taken at sixteen, sits earlier than both - it's a school-leaving qualification in its own right, not yet the finishing qualification a Dutch or IB student needs for university, so what follows it (A Level or the DP) is what actually gets compared to VWO. The practical difference families feel first is grading philosophy: Dutch exams report a 1-10 scale familiar from primary school onward; IB reports 1-7 per subject; Cambridge reports A*-G or 9-1 per subject with no combined average at all.

Workload shape differs too. A VWO student's final years build toward centrally set national exams (centraal examen) alongside school-set exams (schoolexamen), with the split between them fixed by subject. An IB DP student carries six subjects at once, three or four at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS running in parallel across two years - a broader, more continuously assessed structure than the Dutch system's own exam-heavy finish. IGCSE students sit externally set subject papers with no unifying core at all, closer in spirit to the Dutch system's per-subject exams but marked by Cambridge or Edexcel rather than a Dutch exam board.

A completed IB Diploma is recognised in the Netherlands as equivalent to a VWO diploma for admission to a research university, without the separate nostrification step some other countries require for a foreign qualification. In practice that means an IB graduate applies through Studielink, the national application portal, on broadly the same footing as a VWO graduate, provided the diploma includes the subject combinations a specific programme asks for - most commonly Mathematics AA or AI at a stated level, and sometimes a science at HL for technical degrees.

Numerus fixus changes the calculation. A small group of high-demand programmes - Medicine is the best-known example, alongside some Psychology, Business and International Business degrees - cap the number of places and select competitively rather than admitting everyone who meets the minimum entry bar. For these, an IB student's predicted grades, a motivation statement, and in some cases a selection test or interview all weigh in alongside the diploma itself, and a family should check a specific university's selection procedure well before the DP2 application round rather than assuming a strong Diploma alone secures a place.

For programmes without numerus fixus, meeting the published subject and grade requirements is normally enough to secure admission, and Studielink allows up to four simultaneous applications, with only one permitted per numerus fixus field in a given year. One further shift worth tracking: recent Dutch policy has trimmed the number of English-taught bachelor's places at some universities, part of a broader push to rebalance international and Dutch-taught enrolment, so a family building a university list around English-medium programmes should confirm current intake numbers each admissions cycle rather than relying on an earlier year's figures.

Dutch university entry itself rarely asks for an admissions test: a VWO diploma, an IB Diploma or Cambridge A Levels go through Studielink and are judged on subjects and grades. The tests matter the moment an application leaves that system. A DP or IGCSE student in Amsterdam or The Hague aiming at a US bachelor's course is usually asked for an SAT score; a graduate heading for a selective master's or MBA at a Rotterdam or Amsterdam business school is often asked for a GMAT or GRE score instead. Both groups sit the same exams as everyone else worldwide, at a Dutch test centre or, where the test provider allows it, at home.

The digital SAT runs about two hours and fourteen minutes across two sections, Reading and Writing followed by Maths, and is scored on the familiar 400 to 1600 scale. It is section-adaptive: how a student performs in the first module of a section decides the difficulty of the second, which changes how preparation should work - early accuracy is worth more than finishing fast, and the built-in graphing calculator is available throughout the maths section rather than for part of it.

At graduate level the two accepted tests look quite different from each other. The GMAT Focus Edition takes two hours fifteen minutes over Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, with a total score reported between 205 and 805. The GRE General Test runs just under two hours since its 2023 shortening, reporting Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning on a 130 to 170 scale each plus an Analytical Writing score from 0 to 6. Most Dutch programmes that ask for one will accept either, so the sensible first step is a short diagnostic of both rather than guessing which suits a candidate's reasoning style.

Preparation is built the same way subject tutoring is: one full timed paper first to find where points are actually being lost, then section work against that evidence, with timed practice sat in the evening on Central European Time so a student rehearses under conditions close to the real sitting. For a DP2 student the hard part is almost never the test content - it is the calendar, because SAT dates land in the same autumn-to-winter stretch as internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay and mocks. Booking the test date first and working test prep around the school's own deadlines, rather than the reverse, is what keeps both intact.

The Netherlands runs on Central European Time in winter and Central European Summer Time from late March to late October, the same clock shift much of continental Europe follows. Unlike a country with a fixed year-round offset, this means an evening slot booked at, say, 6pm stays 6pm local time through the year, but the gap to other time zones - including the tutor's own - narrows or widens by an hour each March and October. We track those dates and adjust bookings automatically, so a family never has to renegotiate a regular slot when the clocks move.

Dutch schools split the academic year into three regions for holiday scheduling - Noord, Midden and Zuid - each taking its main breaks (autumn, Christmas, spring, May) on a slightly staggered calendar to spread pressure on tourist infrastructure. International and IB schools mostly follow their own separate calendar rather than the regional Dutch one, but a family with children in both a Dutch-medium school and an international one should expect the two calendars to diverge, sometimes by a week or two, which affects when a household can realistically add extra tutoring sessions.

Being a northern-hemisphere country, Dutch and Cambridge-linked IB schools finish their year on the standard May sitting - which pushes internal assessment work, mock exams and the Extended Essay into a busy winter stretch from roughly November to March, well before the actual papers in May. A second, smaller IGCSE series runs in October and November for resits or for students moving faster than their year group, though most candidates simply wait for the main May/June papers. A tutoring calendar built around those specific dates, rather than a flat once-a-week habit, tends to match what a school is actually asking of a student that particular month.

Marking starts with the subject teacher, and the IB checks that marking afterward through a separate moderation step - how much of a subject's final grade this carries depends entirely on which course it is, sitting lighter in mathematics and most sciences and considerably heavier in the arts, performance subjects and languages. What that means practically: a biology student needs a question their school lab can genuinely support with real equipment, a geography student needs fieldwork data they actually collected rather than borrowed, and an economics student needs a commentary tied to a real news article rather than an invented scenario. We spend less time teaching new content here and more time holding a current draft up against the published criteria and pointing at exactly one thing to fix before the next attempt.

Two further pieces run on their own separate clock. The Extended Essay is 4,000 words of independent research checked in stages across a handful of supervisor meetings, and Theory of Knowledge combines an exhibition with a 1,600-word essay answering one of a small set of set titles. Getting either right starts with a boring but essential decision made early: choose a question your child can genuinely research with what's actually available to them - a Dutch or English-language library, a database subscription, primary sources reachable from Amsterdam or Rotterdam rather than only from a bigger research library abroad - and lock it in well before deadlines start stacking up.

Every Dutch school teaching the IB treats a submission the same way: the finished work belongs to the student, both the student and their supervisor confirm that in writing, and originality software checks it before a grade is even considered. Where a tutor actually helps is well short of writing anything - pointing out a criterion a student has read wrong, asking the one question that reveals a gap in an argument, working a similar problem side by side rather than the assessed one, checking a citation is properly formatted. Any tutor who offers to write or substantially rewrite a section for a student is a tutor to stop using immediately, since one academic honesty finding can cost the entire diploma, not just a subject grade.

Booking always uses the Netherlands' own clock, never the tutor's - and since our tutors are based in India, roughly three and a half hours behind in winter and four and a half in summer, a normal Dutch evening slot lands squarely inside a tutor's own working day rather than at some awkward hour for them. Every confirmation spells out the full date and time in whichever Dutch clock is currently in effect, and the system re-times a standing booking automatically the moment either country's clocks move, so parents never have to do that arithmetic themselves.

The opening lesson is closer to an assessment than a lesson - a tutor wants to see what your child is currently being marked on, hand them a problem or two, and hear them talk through their own reasoning rather than jumping straight to whether the final answer is right. That conversation usually surfaces the actual weak point faster than a parent's own guess would. From there, sessions typically settle into a pattern: a leaner slot to keep a subject ticking over, extending toward ninety minutes when there's a draft internal assessment or a batch of past papers to get through, with frequency climbing as a mock or the May papers get closer.

Everything happens through a video call built around a shared digital surface rather than two people staring at separate screens - equations and diagrams get built live for maths and the sciences, while a written subject looks more like a collaboratively edited document with comments appearing in real time. Anything worked on during the lesson gets kept somewhere the family can find again afterward, and recording a session on request is standard rather than exceptional. The technical bar is low: a laptop, decent internet and a headset handle almost every subject, and a stylus only really earns its keep once the mathematics gets serious.

If there's one thing worth doing before a lesson starts, it's forwarding whatever the school itself grades against - an MYP rubric with its lettered criteria, a DP internal assessment brief with its exact word limit, an IGCSE mark scheme straight from the exam board. Working from that document means a tutor's feedback lines up with the exact wording a teacher will use later, calling out a specific losing strand rather than a generic 'needs work'. A note follows each lesson, a bigger review lands every few weeks close to when Dutch schools issue reports, and it's entirely normal for a parent of a younger PYP or MYP student to simply be in the room throughout.
