IB DP tutor jobs: teach Higher and Standard Level Diploma students

The Diploma is where tutoring gets technical: two levels per subject, internal assessment that counts, an Extended Essay, TOK, and a fixed exam session. If you know that machinery, this is where your rate goes furthest.

  • Requests name the subject, HL or SL, and the target exam session
  • Home tuition: 100% of the fee is yours from the second month
  • HL and examiner experience displayed on your profile and priced accordingly
  • Monthly payouts on the 1st with a per-student statement

IB Diploma tutoring

What DP tutoring actually asks of you

The Diploma Programme is the most demanding tutoring work we place, and the best paid. A DP student is carrying six subjects at two different levels, three pieces of core work, internal assessment in most subjects, and a single terminal exam session that determines university admission. By the time a family contacts us, something specific has usually gone wrong and there is a deadline attached to it.

That shapes the job. You are rarely asked to teach a subject from scratch. You are asked to rescue a Higher Level grade two terms before the May session, or to get an internal assessment from a vague idea into a defensible investigation before an internal deadline, or to raise a predicted grade that is about to cost a student a conditional offer.

It also means DP families screen tutors hard. Current and former DP teachers, examiners and moderators are what they look for, and they ask. If you have that background, say so in your profile and evidence it — we display it, and it is the clearest justification for a higher fee on the platform.

  • Every request names the subject, the level and the target exam session
  • You set your fee; HL and examiner experience command the top of the range
  • Decline any student, timing or location without penalty
  • No joining fee, no subscription, no exclusivity

What DP tutors earn and what we take

DP Higher Level is the highest-rate work on the platform, and the reason is simple supply and demand: the number of people who can teach Physics HL or Maths AA HL to a student chasing a 7 is small, and the window in which that student needs them is short. Rates climb further from January as the May session approaches.

You set your own fee and we publish it unchanged. Our share depends only on mode, never on subject or level — we do not take a larger cut because you charge more. Home tuition is split 50-50 for the first month and is 100% yours from month two. Online classes are a flat 70/30 in your favour, every month.

Short, intensive engagements are common in DP work: six weeks of revision before the session, or four weeks of IA supervision. For home tuition that means the 50-50 first month can be most of a short engagement, so it is worth being clear-eyed — for genuinely short pieces of work, online at a flat 70/30 usually leaves you with more.

  • A ₹20,000/month HL home student pays you ₹10,000 in month 1, then ₹20,000 monthly
  • Online at ₹1,800 a class × 10 classes = ₹18,000, of which ₹12,600 is yours
  • For engagements under about six weeks, online usually nets you more than home
  • Your split is locked per student and never cut mid-engagement

What we look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor

DP applications get the closest scrutiny of anything we review, because a weak DP tutor is found out within one class by a student who knows their syllabus better than the tutor does.

  • Subject mastery well beyond the syllabus

For Higher Level we expect genuine depth — a degree in the subject at minimum, and the ability to handle an unseen question a strong candidate brings you without needing to look it up.

  • Working knowledge of the DP assessment model

You should know the papers in your subject and their weightings, how the internal assessment is marked, how grade boundaries move between sessions, and the difference between HL and SL content and depth.

  • Government photo ID for verification

Reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile states that plainly.

  • Understanding of IB academic-honesty rules

Non-negotiable. You must know where supervision ends and malpractice begins on internal assessment and the Extended Essay, because a mistake here can cost a student their entire diploma.

  • Current or former DP teaching experienceHelps, not required

The strongest ordinary signal on a DP profile. Parents ask about it directly, and we display it where you can evidence it.

  • IB examiner or moderator experienceHelps, not required

The single most valuable credential in this lane. It justifies the top of the fee range and we will surface it prominently on your profile once verified.

How to start

From application to your first paid class

Applying takes about twenty minutes. DP applications are reviewed by someone who teaches the subject area wherever we can arrange it.

  1. 1

    Send your profile

List each DP subject with its level — HL, SL or both — plus whether you can supervise internal assessment, Extended Essays or TOK, your mode, availability and fee.

  2. 2

    Upload your ID and credentials

Government photo ID plus your degree, teaching qualification and any examiner or moderator evidence. Examiner credentials are verified before we display them.

  3. 3

Academic review of subject and level

We check your claimed level against your evidence. If your depth fits SL but not HL we will say so and list you at SL rather than reject the application.

  4. 4

    Your verified profile goes live

Showing your subjects and levels, your core-work capability, your mode, availability and fee, with the verification badge from the ID check.

  5. 5

    We send you matched students

You see the subject, level, target session, what has gone wrong and the mode before you accept. Deadline-driven requests say the deadline. You may decline.

  6. 6

    Free demo, then you start

The first class is a free demo, with your fee already visible to the family. DP demos usually become engagements, because by then the family has a specific problem and is looking for the person who can fix it.

Teaching detail

Higher Level and Standard Level are not the same job

Every DP subject runs at two levels, and the difference is not simply that HL covers more ground. HL adds additional syllabus content, is examined with an extra paper in most subjects, and is assessed at greater depth on shared material — the same topic can appear in both and be marked against a harder standard at HL.

A student takes three or four subjects at HL and the rest at SL, so a single student may need you at HL in one subject and nothing at all in another. Most requests we send are HL, because that is where grades slip and where university offers bite.

Be accurate about your level in your profile. We would rather list you at SL in a subject and send you steady work than list you at HL and have a demo class go badly with a candidate chasing a 7. You can always ask us to raise your level once you have results on the platform.

What to expect

Internal assessment: the work families most want and most misunderstand

Internal assessment carries roughly 20–25% of the final grade in most DP subjects, it is marked by the school and moderated by the IB, and it is due on an internal deadline months before the exams. It is also the single most common reason a DP family contacts us.

The reason is structural. A student picks a research question that is too broad, or not answerable with the data they can actually collect, and nobody catches it until the first draft. Fixing a research question early is worth more marks than weeks of content revision, and it is work most school teachers do not have the hours to do one-to-one.

Your role is supervision and teaching, never production. You help the student narrow a question, choose a defensible method, understand the assessment criteria, and read their own drafts critically. You do not write text, you do not fix their data, and you do not rewrite paragraphs for them. The IB's academic-honesty rules treat that as malpractice, the consequence falls on the student, and it can cost them the whole diploma rather than one subject.

Tutors who can hold that line while still being genuinely useful are the ones families recommend, and they are rarer than they should be. If you are unsure where the boundary sits in your subject, say so in your application and we will talk it through before you take an IA student.

  • Roughly 20–25% of the final grade in most subjects
  • The highest-leverage intervention is narrowing the research question early
  • You teach the criteria and critique their drafts — you never write any of it
  • Internal deadlines fall months before the exam session, usually mid Year 2

The core: Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

Beyond the six subjects, every Diploma candidate completes an Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words, a Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and the CAS programme. The EE and TOK together contribute up to three bonus points on the 45-point scale, and those points decide conditional offers more often than families expect.

Extended Essay supervision is steady, well-paid work with a long runway — it typically starts in the first year and runs across two or three terms. The common failure is the same as with internal assessment: a question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words, or one with no accessible sources. Catching that in the first fortnight is most of the value you add.

TOK is its own skill and relatively few tutors offer it. It is not a subject with content to revise; it is a way of arguing about knowledge claims against prescribed titles, and students who are strong in every other subject often flounder in it. If you can teach TOK essay structure, you will have very little competition on the platform.

  • EE and TOK contribute up to 3 bonus points on the 45-point scale
  • Extended Essay supervision runs two to three terms — long, stable engagements
  • TOK tutors are scarce; prescribed titles change, so the work is teaching the reasoning
  • The same honesty boundary applies: supervise and critique, never write
What to expect

Exam sessions, predicted grades and retakes

The Diploma has two exam sessions. May is by far the larger and covers most northern-hemisphere schools; November serves the southern hemisphere and a number of schools across South and Southeast Asia. Your calendar as a DP tutor is set by which of the two your students sit, and tutors who take both have no quiet season.

Predicted grades drive a distinct and urgent kind of request. Schools issue predicteds that universities use for conditional offers, and a student whose predicted grade sits below an offer threshold will look for help immediately, usually with weeks rather than months of runway. These engagements are short, intense and priced accordingly.

After results in July and January there is a retake wave. Students resitting one or two subjects in the next session are motivated, specific about what went wrong, and typically want concentrated work on paper technique rather than full re-teaching. It is some of the most satisfying work in the lane because the gains are measurable.

  • Covering both May and November sessions removes your quiet season
  • Predicted-grade requests are urgent, short and the highest hourly rate
  • Retake students are motivated and want paper technique, not re-teaching

Tutor policy

The terms you are agreeing to

Summaries of our tutor policy clauses. The academic-honesty clause matters more in this lane than any other — read it before you take an IA or EE student.

Academic honesty on IA, EE and TOK

You explain, teach, discuss the research question and give feedback on the student's own drafts. You never write, redraft or supply any part of an assessed piece. IB malpractice findings fall on the student and can cost the whole diploma; we treat a breach as grounds for removal.

Home tuition: 50-50 for the first month, then 100% yours

Each new home student's first month is split evenly, as our one-time fee for the match. From month two we take nothing. For short DP engagements this matters — under about six weeks, online at a flat 70/30 usually leaves you with more.

Online classes: 70% to you, 30% platform fee

A flat 70/30 in your favour every month, which suits the short intensive engagements common in DP work. The platform fee covers matching, fee collection, chasing late payment and replacing a student who stops.

Paid monthly, on the 1st

Fees for a calendar month's classes are paid on the 1st of the following month, by bank transfer or UPI, with a statement listing every student, class, fee and split. September's work is deposited on 1 October.

Your split is locked

The split in force when a student starts remains that student's split and is never cut mid-engagement. Changes are announced at least 30 days ahead and apply only to students starting afterwards.

Safeguarding, including for 16–18 year olds

Most DP students are minors. Teach home students in a common area with an adult in the house, keep your camera on online, never record without parental consent, and keep communication with a parent or in a chat including them.

Reschedule with notice, and the cancellation rule

Give at least 24 hours' notice to move a class. Classes you cancel are not billed to the family and are therefore not paid. In the January-to-April peak, reliability is what keeps families with you.

You are independent, and taxed as such

Tutors are independent professionals, not employees. Income tax on your earnings is yours to handle, your monthly statements are your filing record, and any tax we must deduct at source is shown on the statement.

Why tutors stay

What working with IB Gram actually gives you

Examiner credentials priced properly

If you examine or moderate for the IB, we verify it, display it prominently and expect you to charge for it. On most platforms that experience is invisible.

Requests arrive with the real problem attached

You see the subject, level, target session and what has actually gone wrong before accepting — a slipping HL grade, an IA deadline, a predicted grade below an offer.

No quiet season if you cover both sessions

May and November sessions peak at opposite ends of the year. Tutors who take both keep a full timetable where single-session tutors have months of nothing.

You never chase a family for money

We invoice, collect and follow up on late payment. Late fees are added to your next payout once received, so a difficult conversation is never yours to start.

A clear line on academic honesty

We back tutors who refuse to write a student's IA. Having the platform state that boundary makes the conversation with a pushy parent far easier to hold.

Home tuition becomes 100% yours

After the first month we take nothing from home tuition. For a two-year DP engagement that works out at roughly 98% of everything the family pays.

Tutor questions

Questions from applying tutors

What makes DP tutoring different from IGCSE or A-level tutoring?

Three things: every subject runs at two levels with different content and marking depth, internal assessment worth 20–25% is marked by the school and moderated by the IB, and the core — Extended Essay and TOK — adds up to three points that decide university offers. A tutor who only teaches content will not move a DP grade.

Do I need to be an IB examiner to get DP students?

No, but it is the most valuable credential in this lane. Current or former DP teaching experience is the next strongest. We verify examiner and moderator claims before displaying them, and they justify the top of the fee range because DP parents ask about them directly.

Can I help with a student's Internal Assessment?

Yes — that is some of the most in-demand work we place. You help narrow the research question, choose a defensible method, understand the criteria and critique the student's own drafts. You never write, redraft or supply any part of it. IB malpractice findings fall on the student and can cost the entire diploma.

How much do IB DP tutors earn?

You set your fee, and DP Higher Level is the highest-rate work on the platform because the supply of capable tutors is small and the window of need is short. Our share is fixed by mode only: home tuition 50-50 in month one then 100% yours, online a flat 70% yours. We never take more because you charge more.

Is home or online better for short DP engagements?

Online, usually. The home-tuition 50-50 applies to the first month, so on a four-to-six-week intensive engagement that is most of the work at half pay, whereas online pays a flat 70% from the first class. For long two-year engagements home tuition is far better — about 98% of the total.

What are predicted grade requests and why are they urgent?

Schools issue predicted grades that universities use for conditional offers. A student whose predicted sits below an offer threshold needs to demonstrate improvement quickly, often with weeks of runway rather than months. These engagements are short, intensive and at the top of the rate range.

Can I teach both the May and November sessions?

Yes, and we recommend it. May covers most northern-hemisphere schools and peaks January to April; November serves the southern hemisphere and parts of Asia and peaks September to November. Covering both means you have no quiet season.

Can I tutor Theory of Knowledge?

If you can, please list it — very few tutors offer TOK and demand consistently outstrips supply. It is not content revision but teaching a student to argue about knowledge claims against prescribed titles, which strong subject students often find hardest.

Should I list myself at HL or SL?

List the level you can genuinely teach to a candidate chasing a 7. We would rather place you at SL and send steady work than list you at HL and have a demo go badly. If you are strong at SL and want HL later, ask us once you have results on the platform.

Do I get retake students?

Yes, after results in July and January. Retake students are resitting one or two subjects, are clear about what went wrong and usually want concentrated paper-technique work rather than full re-teaching. The engagements are short and the gains are measurable.

When do I get paid?

On the 1st of the month after the classes were taught — September's fees on 1 October. If the 1st falls on a Sunday or bank holiday the transfer goes out the next working day, by bank transfer or UPI, with an itemised per-student statement.

What if a parent pressures me to write part of an IA?

Refuse, and tell us. Our tutor policy puts that boundary in writing precisely so you can point to it rather than argue it. We will take the conversation with the family, and you are free to stop teaching that student without penalty.

List your DP subjects and levels

Tell us which subjects you teach, at which level, and whether you can supervise internal assessment, Extended Essays or TOK. If you examine for the IB, evidence it and we will display it. A person reads every application.
