Poland's online tutors for IB, IGCSE and Matura-track students

Poland has 65 IB World Schools, one of the larger totals in continental Europe and considerably more than several countries with a bigger international-school reputation. Most of the 56 or so schools authorised for the Diploma Programme are concentrated in Warsaw and Kraków, with smaller but genuine clusters in Wrocław, Gdańsk, Poznań and Katowice. Alongside the IB sector sits a smaller number of schools running Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, often as a stepping stone into A Level or the DP two years later.

The structure of provision matters as much as the count. Almost all IB Diploma teaching in Poland happens inside private liceums that charge tuition fees, rather than through the free public system that most Polish families use by default. A handful of public schools have shown interest in adding an IB stream, but it remains rare rather than typical, which means choosing the IB in Poland is usually also a choice to leave the state system rather than an option layered onto it. That's a real cost decision for a family, distinct from the academic one.

Warsaw alone hosts roughly eight private schools running the full Diploma Programme, more than any other Polish city by a wide margin, and Kraków follows as the country's second-strongest IB market with several private options of its own. Beyond those two cities, provision typically narrows to a single dedicated IB school per city - Wrocław, Gdańsk and Poznań each have one well-established option rather than several competing schools, which limits a family's ability to simply switch schools if the fit turns out wrong.

That concentration is exactly why families outside Warsaw and Kraków, or those needing an unusual HL combination even inside those cities, most often turn to an online tutor rather than a second local school. A liceum running six students through HL Physics rarely has a private specialist for that exact combination on staff, and a family in Poznań or Katowice may have no local alternative at all if their one nearby IB school doesn't suit.

The matura is Poland's national school-leaving exam, sat at the end of four years of liceum (or five years of technikum) and split into a compulsory core - Polish language and literature, a foreign language, and mathematics - plus additional subjects a student chooses at either basic (podstawowy) or extended (rozszerzony) level depending on their intended field of study. It is externally set and marked by regional examination commissions, reported as a percentage score per subject rather than a combined average, and it is the qualification the overwhelming majority of Polish secondary students still sit.

Where the IB Diploma sits relative to Polish university entry is not the same question as where Cambridge IGCSE sits. Polish law simply treats a finished IB Diploma as the matura's equal for admission - there's no nostrification form to file, no separate equivalence certificate to chase, which puts Poland ahead of several European neighbours on paperwork alone. Cambridge IGCSE never plays that role at all: it closes out compulsory schooling at sixteen, and whatever a student sits next - almost always A Level - is the qualification a Polish university actually looks at, running it through that institution's own recruitment-points conversion table.

The two routes also load work very differently across a final year. A matura candidate spends that year aiming at one fixed round of externally set, externally marked papers, full stop - a teacher's private opinion of an essay draft never touches the number that ends up on the certificate. A DP candidate is juggling six subjects simultaneously, three or four of them Higher Level, alongside a core - Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, CAS - that runs continuously for two straight years, with a real slice of several subject grades coming from school-marked, IB-moderated coursework rather than one sit-down exam.

Because the IB Diploma is recognised by law as equivalent to the matura, an IB graduate doesn't need a separate equivalence certificate before applying to a Polish university - that step, common for other foreign qualifications, simply doesn't apply. What does still matter is how a specific university turns an IB result into a competitive admission score, since Polish public universities generally admit through a points-based recruitment system (rekrutacja) rather than a flat pass/fail entry bar, and each institution publishes its own formula for converting IB subject grades into the percentage points the system runs on.

For popular and competitive fields - Medicine is the clearest example, alongside Law, Psychology and some Warsaw and Kraków business programmes - the conversion formula and the specific subjects it weighs matter enormously. A university might convert an IB score of 7 to 100%, a 6 to 90%, and so on down the scale, then apply that converted score only to the subjects its formula actually counts, commonly Biology, Chemistry or Mathematics depending on the field. A DP student aiming at a specific competitive programme needs to check that formula well before finalising HL subject choices, not after DP2 predicted grades are already set.

Registration itself runs through each university's own online recruitment system - most use a national or institution-specific portal known broadly as IRK (Internetowa Rekrutacja Kandydatów) - where an applicant uploads certified documents once final IB results are released in July. Because Polish recruitment rounds often run on tight, subject-specific deadlines shortly after matura results are published, an IB family needs to track a Polish university's own calendar closely rather than assuming DP results and Polish recruitment timing will naturally line up.

Poland spends winter on Central European Time and switches to Central European Summer Time from late March into late October, the same seasonal jump most of the continent makes. A Polish family's evening slot never moves - it holds its usual clock-face start time all year - what actually shifts is the gap to a tutor's own time zone, stretching or shrinking by an hour each time the clocks turn, and that recalculation happens on our end automatically rather than landing on a parent's to-do list.

The Polish academic year is fixed by regulation to start on the first of September and typically finishes in the third week of June, giving the calendar a simplicity that some countries lack. Winter break (ferie zimowe) is the one exception - Poland splits its sixteen voivodeships into two rotating groups, each taking a fortnight off at a slightly different point across January and February, specifically to spread pressure on ski resorts and mountain accommodation. A family should check which group their voivodeship falls into each year rather than assuming last year's dates repeat.

Polish IB and Cambridge-affiliated schools sit the May examination session, the same one used across most of the northern hemisphere, which happens to land close to when Poland's own matura exams run in early-to-mid May - a genuinely intense stretch for any student straddling both systems, or for a school timetabling DP mocks and matura preparation in the same term. IGCSE candidates typically sit the May/June series, with an October/November series available at some centres for resits. Building a tutoring plan around these specific dates, rather than a flat weekly rhythm, keeps preparation matched to what a school is actually doing that month.

The classroom teacher grades an internal assessment first, and the IB re-checks that grade afterward through its own moderation pass - exactly how much that mark counts toward the final subject grade depends on which subject it is, barely moving the needle in mathematics or most sciences and mattering a great deal more in languages, the arts and performance subjects. A chemistry investigation needs a variable a school's own lab can actually measure reliably; a history topic needs sources a student can genuinely get hold of, whether that's Polish-language archives or English secondary reading; a mathematics exploration needs cutting down to something finishable rather than merely a nice idea. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge each answer to their own clock rather than the internal assessment timeline. Both stand or fall on the same early call: pick a question a student can actually chase down with what they can genuinely reach - a school or municipal library, a subscription database, Polish-language material for a history or economics angle - and fix that choice before deadlines start stacking up, not once they already have.

Every Polish liceum teaching the Diploma runs submissions through the same routine: the piece belongs to the student alone, a formal declaration from both student and supervisor says as much, and similarity-checking software screens it before anyone even looks at a grade. A tutor's real contribution stops well short of putting words on the page - naming which criterion a draft is actually failing, asking the question that exposes a shaky argument, walking through a parallel example rather than the graded one, checking a reference list is formatted properly. A tutor who volunteers to write or rewrite a passage is one to walk away from on the spot, since a single academic-honesty finding can void the whole diploma, not just knock marks off one subject.

A tutor's clock never sets the time - a Polish family's does, whether that's CET or CEST for the season. India sits roughly three and a half hours behind Poland come winter and four and a half once summer time starts, so a Polish family's after-school hour lands mid-afternoon or early evening for a tutor, not somewhere awkward on their own day. Every booking confirmation is stamped in Polish local time, and a repeating slot quietly re-times itself the moment either country's clocks turn, leaving nobody to do that subtraction by hand.

The first meeting looks less like teaching and more like taking stock - a tutor asks to see whatever's currently being graded, sets a problem or two in front of the student, and pays close attention to how they talk through it rather than jumping straight to whether the answer is right. That conversation tends to surface the real gap faster than a parent's own hunch about where it is. From there, a rhythm forms: a compact slot most weeks, stretching out closer to ninety minutes when an IA draft or a stack of past papers demands it, with sessions coming more often as a mock or the May exams close in.

Lessons run over video on one shared screen rather than two people staring at separate ones - a maths or science session fills that screen with working and diagrams as they're built live, while an essay subject behaves more like a document two people are editing together in real time. Whatever gets marked up stays saved afterward for the family to revisit, and recording a session on request is completely ordinary. Kit requirements stay minimal - a laptop, a decent connection and a headset handle nearly every subject, with a stylus only worth adding once the mathematics gets genuinely serious.

One thing changes the quality of feedback more than anything else: send over whatever document a school actually marks against - an MYP rubric with its lettered strands, a DP IA brief with its exact word ceiling, an IGCSE mark scheme pulled straight from the board. Working from that paperwork means a tutor's comments use the same terms a Polish teacher will use on the report card, pointing at a named strand rather than a vague impression.
