UAE tutoring
Why the UAE is an unusually strong market for this work
A very large majority of schoolchildren in the UAE attend private schools, and those schools run a wide spread of international curricula — British, IB, American, Indian and others — often several within a few kilometres of each other. For an IB or IGCSE specialist that density is rare and valuable: the students who need you are concentrated rather than scattered.
Private tutoring is also a normal, openly discussed part of how UAE families support their children's schooling, rather than something arranged quietly. Families are generally direct about what they want, specific about the board and level, and willing to pay for a tutor who clearly knows the syllabus.
The market is correspondingly demanding. Parents compare tutors, ask about qualifications and examiner experience directly, and expect a demo class to demonstrate real command. If you have genuine depth in a Higher Level Diploma subject or an IGCSE science, this is among the better places in the world to be tutoring.

You set your own fee in AED and we publish it unchanged; families see it before booking the demo. UAE rates are generally well above Indian rates for equivalent work, and the premium is highest for Diploma Higher Level subjects and for in-person teaching in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Our share depends only on the mode. Home tuition is split 50-50 for the first month with each new student and is then 100% yours for as long as you keep teaching them. Online classes are a flat 70/30 in your favour, every month, with no reduced first month.
We invoice and collect from the family and pay you monthly on the 1st, with an itemised statement showing every student, class, fee and split. You never invoice a family and you never chase a late payment.

Eligibility
What we look for in an IB or IGCSE tutor
UAE parents screen harder than most markets, so this is where credentials genuinely matter. One thing is your responsibility rather than ours: making sure your own visa status permits the work.
Subject command at the level you teach
A degree or teaching qualification in the subject, or a strong track record with IB or IGCSE students. For Higher Level subjects UAE families expect depth and will ask about it.
Knowledge of the relevant assessment model
Your IGCSE board's papers and mark schemes, or the Diploma's internal assessment, HL and SL distinctions and grade boundaries. Examiner experience is the strongest credential you can hold here.
Valid work authorisation for your own situation
This is yours to establish, not ours to grant. Tutoring in the UAE is regulated, and whether you need a freelance permit, a work permit or sponsor permission depends on your visa status and emirate. Confirm your position before you accept paid work.
Government photo ID for verification
Emirates ID or passport, reviewed before your profile goes live. An identity check, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile states that plainly.
A setup for your chosen mode
Online needs stable broadband, a camera, a microphone and a quiet professional space. In-person needs reliable travel to the communities you list, which in UAE terms usually means a car.
Experience in a UAE or international schoolHelps, not required
Weighted heavily in review and the first thing many UAE parents ask about. Not essential if your subject depth and assessment knowledge are strong.
How to start
From application to your first paid class
The application takes about twenty minutes. If you intend to teach in person, settle your work-authorisation position first — it is the one step we cannot do for you.
1
Confirm your work authorisation
Check what your visa status permits before anything else. Requirements differ by emirate and by whether you are sponsored, on a freelance visa or a dependent. This is your responsibility and it is worth resolving first.
2
Send your profile
List your subjects and levels, your boards, your mode, and if teaching in person, the communities or areas you can reach. Add your availability and your fee in AED.
3
Upload your ID and credentials
Emirates ID or passport plus your degree, teaching qualification and any examiner or moderator evidence. Examiner claims are verified before we display them.
4
Academic review
We check subject depth and board knowledge against what you claimed. If your evidence fits SL rather than HL, or one board rather than both, we list you accordingly.
5
Your verified profile goes live
Showing your emirate, areas, subjects, levels, mode, availability and fee, with the verification badge from the ID check.
6
Free demo, then you start
The first class is a free demo, in person or over video, with your fee already visible to the family. Your first payout lands on the 1st of the following month.

Where the demand sits across the Emirates
Dubai is the deepest market by a wide margin, and within it the demand clusters around the established school communities — Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, Arabian Ranches and the Springs, Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Mirdif, Al Barsha, Dubai Silicon Oasis and the newer Dubai Hills and Town Square developments. Journeys between some of these are long enough that a tutor should think of them as separate markets rather than one city.
Abu Dhabi is the second market and behaves differently: more concentrated on the island, Khalifa City, Al Reem and Yas, with a somewhat higher share of families connected to government and energy-sector employment and a strong preference for in-person tutoring.
Sharjah and the Northern Emirates — Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain — have real international-curriculum populations and much thinner tutor supply. A great many Sharjah families commute into Dubai for work, which also means a tutor based in Sharjah can realistically serve both. Al Ain has an established school population and very little local competition.
Because distances and traffic are a genuine constraint here, online is a bigger share of UAE tutoring than its reputation suggests. A tutor in Sharjah teaching online can hold students in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in an evening where driving would make that impossible.

What to expect
Regulation, permits and what is your responsibility
This needs saying plainly, because it is the part applicants most often get wrong. Private tutoring in the UAE is a regulated activity. Schools are overseen by authorities such as KHDA in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi, and there have been repeated official campaigns about unlicensed private tutoring. Whether you personally need a freelance permit, a work permit, or written permission from an existing sponsor depends on your visa status and your emirate.
IB Gram is a matching platform. We introduce students to tutors, we collect fees and we pay you — we are not your employer and we do not sponsor your visa or grant you the right to work. Establishing that you may lawfully accept paid tutoring work is your responsibility, and we ask you to confirm it before you take a student.
If you are a teacher already employed by a UAE school, check your own contract and your school's policy carefully before you start. Many schools restrict or prohibit private tutoring outright, and some prohibit tutoring any student from their own school specifically. That second restriction is near-universal and worth assuming applies to you.
If you are on a dependent or spouse visa, a freelance permit route generally exists but the detail varies. If you are outside the UAE and teaching UAE students online, the relevant rules are usually those of the country you are physically in. None of this is difficult to resolve, but it is much easier to resolve before you have a family waiting for a first class.
Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated — permits are a real requirement, not a formality
IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer or visa sponsor
Employed teachers: check your contract; tutoring your own school's students is usually barred
Dependent or spouse visa holders: a freelance permit route generally exists
Teaching UAE students from abroad: your own country's rules normally apply

The UAE school year, Ramadan and your timetable
UAE schools run a September-to-June academic year with the long break over the summer, which is close to the northern-hemisphere norm and aligns well with the IB May examination session and the IGCSE May/June series. Term breaks fall around late December and a spring break in March or April.
Demand builds from September as a new year settles, strengthens through the autumn as mid-year assessments and mock exams arrive, and peaks between January and April before the May session. Diploma Year 2 students and IGCSE Year 10 students dominate that peak and it is when your rate goes furthest.
Ramadan changes the shape of the day and is worth planning for rather than being surprised by. Schools move to shortened hours, families restructure their evenings around iftar, and tutoring slots shift accordingly — typically either into the early afternoon after a shortened school day, or well into the evening after iftar. Most families will tell you what they prefer if you ask; the tutors who handle Ramadan well simply raise it a fortnight ahead and agree a temporary schedule.
The summer, roughly July and August, is genuinely quiet. A large share of UAE families travel, and many leave the country for several weeks. Tutors who want to work through it generally do so online with families who have travelled, or take on bridging students preparing to start the Diploma in September.

What to expect
Teaching UAE families from outside the UAE
A good share of the UAE students we place are taught online by tutors who are not in the Emirates at all, most often from India, and the time difference is the reason it works so well. The UAE is an hour and a half behind India, so a Dubai student's 5pm after-school slot falls at 6.30pm in India — squarely inside a normal Indian tutoring evening.
For tutors in the UK the overlap also works, in the other direction: a UAE after-school slot of 4pm to 8pm falls at roughly noon to 4pm UK time in winter, which suits anyone whose availability is in the working day rather than the evening.
If you teach UAE students from abroad, the work-authorisation question is generally governed by where you are physically sitting rather than by UAE rules, but confirm your own position. What does apply regardless is everything else: fees are set in AED, we collect from the family, and you are paid on the 1st of the following month with the same itemised statement.
UAE is 1.5 hours behind India — a Dubai 5pm slot is 6.30pm IST
UAE after-school slots fall in the UK working day in winter
From abroad, your own country's work rules normally govern, not the UAE's
Fees are still set and collected in AED, with the same payout terms
Tutor policy
The terms you are agreeing to
Summaries of our tutor policy clauses. The work-authorisation point is not a policy clause but a legal requirement on you, and it is the one to settle first.
Work authorisation is your responsibility
IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer or visa sponsor. Establishing that your visa status permits paid tutoring — a freelance permit, work permit or sponsor permission as applicable — is yours to confirm before you accept a student.
Home tuition: 50-50 for month one, then 100% yours
Each new in-person student's first month fee is split evenly as our one-time fee for the match. From month two we take nothing for as long as you keep teaching them, per student.
A flat 70/30 in your favour every month with no reduced first month, which makes it the better-paid choice for the short exam-season engagements common here.
Fees for a calendar month's classes are paid on the 1st of the following month, with a statement listing every student, class, fee and split. We invoice the family and chase late payment.
Teach in a common area of the home with an adult present, never alone with a minor behind a closed door. Online, camera on and no recording without parental consent. Communication goes through a parent or a chat including them.
Any student, community, timing or subject, without a reason and without penalty — including locations you would rather not drive to. Given UAE distances, this matters more here than in most markets.
Do not move a student we introduced to a private arrangement or take fees directly from the family. In-person tuition is already 100% yours from month two, so there is nothing to gain; doing it leads to removal.
Tutors are independent professionals, not employees. Any tax obligations arising in your own jurisdiction are yours to handle, and your monthly statements give you the record.
A very high share of UAE children attend private international-curriculum schools, often several within a few kilometres. The students who need an IB or IGCSE specialist are concentrated rather than scattered.
Tutoring is a normal expectation
Private tutoring is openly used here rather than quietly arranged. Families are direct about the board, level and exam series they need, which makes matching accurate.
Credentials are properly valued
UAE parents ask about examiner experience and school background directly. If you hold them, this is a market that pays for them rather than ignoring them.
Distance is handled by online
Traffic between UAE school communities is a real constraint. Online lets a Sharjah-based tutor hold Abu Dhabi and Al Ain students in one evening, which driving makes impossible.
The Northern Emirates are under-served
Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain have genuine demand and far fewer qualified tutors than Dubai. Less competition per student.
You never chase a family for payment
We invoice in AED, collect and follow up on late payment. Your payout arrives on the 1st with an itemised statement, regardless of when the family paid.
Tutor questions
Questions from applying tutors
Do I need a permit to tutor privately in the UAE?
Very likely, and it depends on your visa status and emirate. Private tutoring is a regulated activity overseen by authorities such as KHDA in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi, and there have been repeated official campaigns about unlicensed tutoring. IB Gram is a matching platform, not your employer or visa sponsor, so establishing your right to accept paid work is your responsibility — settle it before you take a student.
I teach at a UAE school. Can I tutor on the side?
Check your contract and your school's policy first. Many UAE schools restrict or prohibit private tutoring, and a prohibition on tutoring students from your own school is close to universal — assume it applies to you unless your school says otherwise in writing.
I am on a dependent or spouse visa. Can I tutor?
A freelance permit route generally exists for dependent and spouse visa holders, but the detail varies by emirate and changes over time. Confirm your own position with the relevant authority before accepting paid work. We cannot grant or sponsor work rights.
Which emirates have the most demand?
Dubai is deepest by a wide margin, clustered around the established school communities. Abu Dhabi is second, concentrated on the island, Khalifa City, Al Reem and Yas. Sharjah and the Northern Emirates have genuine demand and much thinner tutor supply, and Al Ain has very little local competition.
How much do tutors earn in the UAE?
You set your own fee in AED, and UAE rates are generally well above Indian rates for equivalent work — highest for Diploma Higher Level subjects and in-person teaching in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Our share is fixed by mode: in-person 50-50 for month one then 100% yours, online a flat 70% yours.
Can I teach UAE students from India or the UK?
Yes, online, and many of our tutors do. The UAE is 1.5 hours behind India, so a Dubai 5pm after-school slot falls at 6.30pm IST. From the UK, UAE after-school slots land in your winter working day. Work-authorisation rules are generally those of where you are physically sitting.
How does Ramadan affect tutoring?
Schools move to shortened hours and families restructure evenings around iftar, so slots shift either into the early afternoon or well after iftar. Raise it with your families about a fortnight ahead and agree a temporary schedule — that is all the tutors who handle it well actually do.
When is the UAE market busiest and quietest?
Busiest from January to April, before the IB May session and the IGCSE May/June series. Quietest in July and August, when a large share of families travel and many leave the country for weeks. Summer work is mostly online with travelling families, or bridging students preparing to start the Diploma.
Is in-person or online better paid here?
It depends on engagement length. In-person takes half of your first month and then nothing, so it wins on a term or a full school year — around 95% of the total. Online is a flat 70% forever, so it wins on the four-to-six-week exam pushes that are common in the spring.
Which ID do you verify?
Emirates ID or passport, reviewed before your profile goes live. It is an identity check only, not a police or criminal-records check, and your profile says so rather than implying more.
Do I invoice the family directly?
No. IB Gram invoices the family in AED, collects the fee and chases late payment. If a family pays late, the amount is added to your next payout once we receive it. You are never asked to handle collection.
Can I refuse a location because of the drive?
Yes, without a reason and without penalty. Given UAE distances this matters more here than in most markets — journeys between some Dubai school communities are long enough that you should treat them as separate markets and list only what you will genuinely drive to.
List what you teach, where you can reach, and your fee in AED. Confirm your work-authorisation position first — it is the one step we cannot take for you. A person reads every application.
