Best IB Schools in Dubai: How to Judge Them Properly
Every ranking of Dubai's IB schools sorts on an inspection rating awarded in a cycle it never names. Here is how to read the ratings, the reports and the Diploma cohort yourself.

In this guide · 11 sections
Every article called "the best IB schools in Dubai" has the same hidden mechanic: it ranks schools on a Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) inspection rating, then presents the ordering as though it were current. The uncomfortable fact is that KHDA announced in May 2025 that full inspections would not run for Dubai's private schools in the 2025-26 academic year, with schools instead required to keep running external benchmark assessments and to submit regular updates through their self-evaluation forms. Gulf News and Khaleej Times both reported the pause at the time, and Gulf News reported on 3 June 2026 that oversight returns from the 2026-27 academic year as short-notice quality assurance visits with no more than 24 hours' notice before a team arrives. So a ranking published today is built on ratings awarded in an earlier cycle, and almost nobody says so.
This guide does something different. It does not hand you a numbered list, because a numbered list is the one thing a parent cannot verify and the one thing that goes stale fastest. Instead it teaches you to read Dubai's International Baccalaureate (IB) market the way an admissions-savvy parent reads it: what the inspection rating measures and what it quietly ignores, where to find a named school's current rating in about four minutes, which structural question about an IB school matters more than its brand, what the sector actually looks like in numbers, what seven years of IB fees plus tutoring really costs, and what a tutor may and may not do once your child is inside the system. IB Gram supports students at many Dubai IB schools and claims no relationship with, endorsement from, or approval by any of them, nor by KHDA or the IB.
Why no ranking of the best IB schools in Dubai can rest on a current inspection rating
The rating that every listicle sorts on is an overall judgement from the UAE School Inspection Framework, applied in Dubai by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB). It is a real, serious instrument. It is also a snapshot, and the snapshot has not been retaken for everyone on the same schedule.
Three things follow, and they change how you should read any list.
The first is timing. If a school's published overall rating was awarded two or three cycles ago, it describes a leadership team, a teaching body and a cohort that may have substantially turned over. International schools in Dubai run on expatriate staff, and a head of IB Diploma Programme (DP) leaving takes a measurable amount of institutional knowledge out of the building. A rating cannot see that.
The second is granularity. An overall rating compresses a whole school — Foundation Stage through Year 13, every curriculum stream, every subject department — into one word. A school rated the same as another can be excellent at primary and ordinary at DP Higher Level (HL) sciences, or the reverse. Your child does not attend the whole school. Your child attends two or three departments.
The third is the new regime itself. Gulf News reported that from the 2026-27 academic year KHDA will run two kinds of visit: a full quality assurance visit by specialist experts applying the full UAE School Inspection Framework, which does produce an overall rating and a published comprehensive report, and a shorter monitoring visit by a smaller team, focused on specific audit trails and key lines of enquiry identified through data analysis, which issues a concise report of strengths and recommendations but no new overall rating. Fatma Belrehif, Chief Executive of the Education Quality Assurance and Compliance Agency, was quoted saying the renewed approach "strengthens parents' confidence in the quality of educational choices available."
As reported by Gulf News on 3 June 2026. Confirm against KHDA's own news pages.
The two columns are not two grades of school. They are two kinds of visit, and a school that receives the right-hand one keeps whatever rating it already had.
Read that carefully as a parent. It means two schools can both be visited in the same year and only one of them comes away with a fresh overall rating. A ranking that sorts on overall ratings will therefore be comparing schools whose last rating is years apart, without telling you. We are describing press reporting here, not quoting a KHDA policy document, so confirm the current cycle on KHDA's own news pages before you act on it.
- May 2025KHDA announces that full inspections will not run for Dubai's private schools in 2025-26; schools keep external benchmark assessments and self-evaluation updates.
- 2025-26No full inspection cycle. Every overall rating in circulation during that year was awarded earlier.
- 22 May 2026KHDA confirms no increase in private school fees for 2026-27, under Dubai's second economic incentives package.
- 3 June 2026Gulf News reports that oversight returns from 2026-27 through short-notice visits, with no more than 24 hours' notice.
- From 2026-27Two visit types run side by side; only the full quality assurance visit issues a fresh overall rating.
Dates as announced by KHDA and reported by Gulf News and Khaleej Times. Confirm the current cycle on khda.gov.ae.
Read the strip and the problem is obvious: any rating quoted to you today was awarded before the pause, and from 2026-27 only some schools will get a new one.
The practical conclusion is not cynicism. It is sequencing. Use the rating to screen out, never to choose. Then do the work that actually discriminates between the shortlist, which is the rest of this article.
What each band of the inspection rating actually means
The framework judges on a six-point scale, and the two most important facts about that scale are not the labels but the two reference lines inside it: Good is described as the expected level for every school in the UAE, and Acceptable as the minimum level required. That is a very different thing from a five-star review site, where three stars feels mediocre but acceptable. Here, "Acceptable" is the floor, not the middle.
| Band | Where it sits against the UAE expectation | What it usually means inside a DP classroom | How a parent should treat it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outstanding | Exceeds the UAE expectation | Consistently strong teaching, and usually a settled, experienced DP team | Shortlist, then still ask about the specific departments your child needs |
| Very Good | Above the expectation | Strong overall with identified pockets that are merely good | Shortlist; ask which areas the report named for improvement |
| Good | The expected level for every school in the UAE | Solid, compliant, competent; variation between departments is normal | Entirely reasonable choice; the department question becomes decisive |
| Acceptable | The minimum level required | Teaching meets the floor; outcomes often depend heavily on the individual teacher | Visit before you rule it in or out, and read the report, not the label |
| Weak | Below the expectation | Systemic issues named in the report | Only with a specific, evidenced reason and a clear improvement trajectory |
| Very Weak | Significantly below the expectation | Serious, documented failure against several standards | Not a shortlist candidate for a two-year DP |
Scale labels and the expected or minimum-level wording are as published in DSIB inspection reports and inspection handbooks on khda.gov.ae; the framework has been revised over the years, so read the current handbook rather than assuming an older edition still applies.
Band labels and the expected-level and minimum-level wording as published in DSIB inspection reports and inspection handbooks on khda.gov.ae.
Look at the two middle points rather than the ends: Acceptable is the floor every Dubai school must clear, and Good is the level the UAE expects of all of them.
The inspection report behind the label is the genuinely useful document, and hardly any parent opens it. It is typically dozens of pages, and it names things a brochure never will: whether attainment is above curriculum standards and above international benchmarks, whether progress is strong for low-attaining students as well as high-attaining ones, whether provision for students of determination is effective, and whether the school's own self-evaluation is accurate. That last one is the quiet tell. A school whose self-evaluation inspectors describe as accurate is a school that knows its own weaknesses, which is exactly the school most likely to fix them.
How to read a named Dubai school's current rating in about four minutes
This is the part the listicles replace with their own table. Do it yourself and you get the real answer, dated.
Do all five before the open day, so the open day is spent on questions nobody can answer from a document.
The fifth step is the one parents skip and regret. IB authorisation is programme-specific: a school can be authorised for the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Middle Years Programme (MYP) without being authorised for the Diploma Programme, or can run the DP alongside a British stream and route most students down the latter. A family that assumes "IB school" means "my child will sit the full Diploma here in Year 13" sometimes discovers in Year 11 that the DP cohort is twenty students and three of the six subject groups are taught in combined classes. If your child is still in the middle years, our MYP tutoring in Dubai and Diploma Programme tutoring in Dubai pages set out what each programme actually demands, and what the MYP looks like for Dubai parents explains the assessment model that surprises most new arrivals.
Which structural model a Dubai IB school follows, and why that beats brand
Dubai's IB schools are not one type of institution. They fall into recognisable models, and the model predicts your child's experience far better than the name on the gate. Every school named below is one our own Dubai coverage already includes; naming it is not a claim of any relationship with it, and programme detail must be confirmed on the IB's directory and the school's KHDA profile.
| Model you will meet in Dubai | What it looks like in practice | Schools in our coverage that sit in this space | What to confirm before you commit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full IB continuum, PYP through DP | One philosophy from Foundation to Year 13; inquiry-led primary feeding naturally into MYP | Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, GEMS World Academy, Raffles World Academy, Uptown International School | That the DP cohort is large enough to run the subject combination your child wants |
| Dual-track, IGCSE then DP | British Key Stage 4 to Year 11, then a choice between DP and A-Level in the sixth form | GEMS Wellington International School, Deira International School, Emirates International School Jumeirah, Emirates International School Meadows | How many students actually choose DP, and whether HL options survive low uptake |
| DP as the sixth-form route in a British school | Strong British identity, IB offered as the academic sixth form | Dubai British School, Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches, Safa British School | Whether DP teachers are IB-trained or A-Level teachers reassigned |
| American curriculum with the DP on top | US high-school diploma plus the IB Diploma for the academically ambitious | Dubai American Academy, Universal American School, Collegiate American School, Dwight School Dubai | How the US credit requirements and DP workload are timetabled together |
| IB-identified newer school still building upward | Programme authorisation in progress or recently granted; year groups still filling | Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, Swiss International Scientific School, Greenfield International School, GEMS International School Al Khail | Which programmes are authorised today, and the size of the oldest year group |
That final column is the whole point. The failure mode in Dubai is not choosing a weak school; it is choosing a good school whose DP cohort is too small to timetable the combination your child needs. If your daughter wants Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL, Physics HL and Economics HL, and the school's DP year has twenty-two students, at least one of those three is likely to clash or to be taught as a mixed SL/HL class. Ask for the current DP block timetable. A school that is confident will show it to you. If the combination itself is what you are unsure about, our IB subject selection guidance and IB Higher Level versus Standard Level guidance pages work through it subject by subject, and choosing between IB Maths AA and AI as a UAE student covers the single decision families get wrong most often.
Both models are described in the table above. Confirm current programme authorisation on the IB's Find an IB World School directory.
In one line: the continuum sells continuity and the dual-track sells optionality, and you pay for whichever of the two you end up not using.
If you are moving in from a non-IB system, the transition is a separate problem from the school choice, and we treat it separately in our guides to moving from CBSE into the IB in Dubai and moving from the British curriculum into the IB.
What the Dubai school market actually looks like in numbers
Parents choosing an IB school are making a decision inside a market, and the market's shape explains a lot of what feels inexplicable at the individual-school level — why waiting lists exist in some communities and not others, why fee conversations have changed, and why IB supply is growing.
- students in Dubai private schools in 2024-25
- 387,441
- private schools operating
- 227
- different curricula licensed in the emirate
- 17
- of Dubai private-school students on an International Baccalaureate programme
- 7%
- enrolment growth recorded during 2025-26
- 6%
- new places created by the 2026-27 intake
- 16,846
Sector figures from the Dubai Media Office release on Dubai's private school sector and KHDA's announcement on new schools for 2026-27.
Two of those numbers deserve unpacking, because they pull in opposite directions for IB families.
The first is the 7%. The IB is a minority curriculum in Dubai. The United Kingdom curriculum carries 37% of students, the Indian curricula 26%, and the United States curricula 14%. That means the pool of IB-experienced teachers in the emirate is proportionally small, and so is the pool of genuinely IB-experienced tutors. Supply thinness is not a sales line; it is arithmetic, and it is why a specialist for DP Chemistry HL is harder to secure in Dubai in February than a general GCSE maths tutor is in any month.
- United Kingdom37%
- Indian curricula26%
- United States14%
- International Baccalaureate7%
- All other licensed curricula16%
Named shares from the Dubai Media Office release on Dubai's private school sector; Dubai licenses 17 curricula in total, and the remainder is the balance of those.
The picture in one glance: the IB slice is the smallest named share on the chart, and a market that small is why IB-experienced teachers are scarce in Dubai and IB-experienced tutors scarcer still.
The second is the 16,846. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, of which four are United Kingdom curriculum and three are International Baccalaureate, creating those places. Three new IB schools in one intake is a meaningful proportional expansion on a 7% base. For a family with a child in Year 7, that changes the calculus: the school that is oversubscribed today may not be in three years, and a new IB school is often where the strong, ambitious teachers go.
Set against that, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there will be no increase in school fees for Dubai's private schools for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. A fee freeze plus new supply is, for once, a genuinely favourable moment to be choosing.
What seven years of IB in Dubai actually costs, tutoring included
Most school-choice articles stop at the annual fee, which is the least useful way to think about the cost. The IB is a long commitment, and the expensive years are not evenly spread: the two DP years carry the heaviest support load because that is when the Internal Assessments (IAs), the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) all land on top of six subjects.
The figures below are market rates for tutoring in Dubai, drawn from published competitor rate cards and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai rate table as read in October 2026. They are not IB Gram's price list, and they are not a quotation; our IB tutor cost page for Dubai and IB home tutor fees in Dubai pages set out how we actually quote.
| Line item | AED | Period | What drives the number |
|---|---|---|---|
| School fees, mid-market Dubai IB school | Set by the school, frozen for 2026-27 | Per year | KHDA confirmed no fee increase for 2026-27; the school's published band is the only reliable figure |
| One subject, one session a week, qualified online tutor | 600 to 1,200 | Per month | Market mid-band of AED 150 to 300 an hour |
| One subject, two sessions a week, exam year | 1,000 to 2,000 and above | Per month | Specialist exam-year rates of AED 200 to 450 and above |
| In-home visit where a family buys it locally | 180 to 500 | Per hour | Travel time is inside the rate; Bestimate quotes 180 to 350, independent home tutors 200 to 500 |
| Monthly package seen in the Dubai market | 799 online for 8 sessions; 1,599 to 1,799 in-home for 4 two-hour sessions | Per month | Published provider packages, read October 2026 |
| IA, EE and TOK process support block | Quoted per block, not per hour, by most providers | DP1 to DP2 | Supervision is episodic, not weekly; see the honesty boundary below |
Market bands as published by providers and by Bestimate's Dubai rate table, read October 2026. Not IB Gram prices.
The gap between the second and third rows is the most interesting number on this page, and it is almost entirely travel. A tutor who drives to a villa in Arabian Ranches at 5pm on a weekday is paid for the lesson and, implicitly, for the ninety minutes of Sheikh Zayed Road that bracket it. That is a real cost that buys no teaching. Our guide to IB tutors in Arabian Ranches runs the same arithmetic community by community.
Which brings us to how IB Gram actually works, stated plainly because the alternative is misleading: for families in the UAE, IB Gram teaches online, one to one, over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE — in-home visits are an India-only service — and we will never promise you a tutor at a Dubai address. If the thing you want is a person in your living room, a local in-home provider is the honest answer, and the rate band above is roughly what you will pay for it. What live online buys instead is access to a subject specialist who does not have to live within driving distance of Dubai Hills Estate, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial lesson before you commit — the model our online IB tutoring in Dubai page describes in full. Our comparison of in-home and online IB tutoring in Dubai works through that trade-off properly, and what IB home tutor fees in Dubai really come to breaks the monthly numbers down.
Provider-published bands read October 2026. Not IB Gram's price list.
One line if you read nothing else in this section: the in-home premium is mostly Sheikh Zayed Road, and the online saving is mostly the specialist you could not otherwise reach.
If you want the area-level picture of where Dubai's IB families actually cluster, our Dubai Hills Estate, Dubai Marina and Al Barsha pages cover school runs, timings and realistic session slots community by community.
The admissions and transition year, counted backwards
Parents tend to start the school-choice process when the decision feels urgent, which is usually too late to get a first-choice place in a popular year group. Run it backwards from the start date instead.
- Twelve to eighteen months outShortlist on inspection reports and IB authorisation. Visit on an ordinary teaching day, not an open day.
- Nine to twelve months outSubmit applications. Popular year groups in established IB schools close early; assessment slots are allocated in order.
- Six to nine months outSit entrance assessments. Ask what the school does with the result and whether it affects setting.
- Three to six months outAccept, pay the deposit, and request the subject or block timetable for the year group your child enters.
- Two to three months outIdentify the single subject most likely to cause trouble and start support before term, not after the first report.
- First termExpect a dip. A curriculum change costs most students a term of fluency; judge the school on the second report, not the first.
The same intervals as the countdown above, converted to months for a September entry the following year.
Read the strip as a deadline board: if you are reading this in the spring for the coming September, you are already past the shortlisting window and inside the assessment one.
That final line is not resignation. A child moving from a content-recall system into MYP or DP is being asked to do a different cognitive job — inquiry, criteria-referenced assessment, extended writing — and the first set of marks measures the transition more than the teaching. The families who panic in week six and change school in month four almost always pay for it twice.
What a tutor may and may not do once your child is inside an IB school
This is the single most important paragraph on the page, and it was missing from every ranking article we examined while researching this piece.
The IB Diploma includes assessed work that must be the student's own: the Internal Assessment in each subject, the 4,000-word Extended Essay, and the TOK essay and exhibition. The student's supervisor signs to confirm authenticity. A tutor who writes, substantially rewrites, or edits that work to completion is not giving your child an advantage; they are exposing your child to an academic-misconduct finding, and the consequence of a misconduct finding at Diploma level can be the loss of the Diploma.
| What a tutor is for | What that looks like in a session | What crosses the line |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching the underlying subject content | Reworking the thermodynamics your child did not follow in class | Drafting the analysis section of their Physics IA |
| Method and process coaching | Showing how a research question is narrowed, using a different example | Choosing and writing up their EE research question for them |
| Reading criteria with the student | Walking the assessment criteria descriptors so the student can self-assess | Marking the work and handing back corrected text to copy in |
| Exam technique | Timed practice on past material, then diagnosing where marks were lost | Supplying unreleased papers, mark schemes or boundary tables |
| Honest feedback | "This paragraph asserts; the criterion wants evaluation. Try again." | Rewriting the paragraph so it meets the criterion |
We also do not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. We reference them and link to the official source, because that is both the lawful position and the useful one — your child should know where the real documents live. Our Extended Essay support, Internal Assessment support and Theory of Knowledge essay help pages are written to exactly this boundary, and our TOK guide for UAE students shows what that support looks like in a real session.
One further UAE-specific rule belongs here. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so we quote no amount. Ask any tutor you engage whether they hold the permit. It costs them nothing to have, which makes not having it informative. We set the rules out at length in the UAE private tutor work permit explained and what KHDA's rules mean for private tutors in Dubai.
- the Ministerial Resolution that introduced the permit
- 710 of 2023
- what the permit costs the applicant
- AED 0
- how long it is valid before renewal
- 2 years
- the age band of school students eligible to hold one
- 15 to 18
Permit detail from the u.ae work permits information and the MoHRE private tuition permit service. No fine schedule is published, so no amount is quoted here.
The useful figure in that block is the AED 0. A permit that costs the holder nothing is a permit a working tutor has no excuse for lacking.
Three mistakes Dubai parents make when they choose on reputation
Mistake one: treating the overall rating as a department rating. A family we would describe generically — because we do not publish identifiable student cases — moves to Dubai Marina, shortlists on overall ratings alone, and enrols a child who wants Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL into a school whose strength is its humanities and arts faculty. The rating was accurate. It was also irrelevant to the one subject that would determine the child's engineering application. The fix costs nothing: ask for the DP subject results distribution by subject, and ask how many students took your child's intended HL subject last year. Families in that community usually end up booking IB maths tutors in Dubai Marina or IB physics tutors in Dubai Marina in any case, and our guide to IB tutors in Dubai Marina explains why the subject rather than the postcode is the thing to search for.
Mistake two: buying the IB continuum and then not using it. The structural argument for a PYP-to-DP school is continuity of pedagogy. Families who move schools at the end of Year 6 and again at the end of Year 11 pay the continuity premium and take none of the benefit. If you genuinely expect to move for the sixth form, a dual-track school that routes cleanly from IGCSE into DP is the better-value structure, and our IGCSE to IB transition page explains what that handover actually requires.
Mistake three: forgetting that the mandatory UAE subjects are not optional. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and schools must ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. Parents arriving from abroad routinely plan six IB subjects and then discover a timetable that also carries Arabic and Islamic Education — and that Arabic is the subject most likely to need support, because it is the one the child has never studied. Our Dubai Arabic tutoring and IGCSE Arabic pages exist for precisely that gap.
- mandatory strands: Arabic, Islamic Education, Social or Moral Studies
- 3
- the academic year by which KHDA's requirements had to be implemented
- 2025-26
- the lesson unit instructional time is calculated on
- 40 minutes
- classes required for Arabs and non-Arabs; combined classes strictly prohibited
- Separate
Requirements as published in KHDA's mandatory subjects guidelines.
The practical consequence for your child's timetable: six IB subjects plus all of the above, and Arabic is the one strand most new arrivals have never studied.
What to ask on the school visit, when the documents have run out
By the time you visit, the inspection report and the IB directory have told you everything a document can. The visit is for the questions no document answers. Take these.
- How many students were in last year's DP cohort, and how many sat the full Diploma rather than courses?
- Which HL subjects ran last year, and which were cancelled for low uptake?
- How long has the DP Coordinator been in post, and how long the heads of maths and science?
- What proportion of DP teachers have current IB subject-specific training?
- When was the school's last full inspection, and what did the report name for improvement?
- What is the school's own position on external tutoring, and does it expect to be told?
- How is Arabic streamed, and how are non-Arab beginners supported?
- What does the school do when a student is clearly on the wrong HL, and in which month does it allow a change?
The last question is the sharpest one in the list. A school that answers it concretely — naming a month, naming who decides — is a school that has a working pastoral system. A school that says "we'd discuss it" has not thought about it.
Ask them in this order because each answer makes the next one harder to deflect.
Ask them in that sequence and the pattern does the work for you: a school that has the cohort number to hand usually has the cancellation list to hand too, and a school that has neither has told you something.
For broader context on how the Dubai IB market compares with the IGCSE and A-Level routes, our comparison of the IB, IGCSE and A-Level routes for UAE families sets out what each qualification actually commits you to, and our guide to the best areas in Dubai for IB families handles the geography. If your child is in the British stream and the real question is which IGCSE school to pick, start with the best IGCSE schools in Dubai instead, and if the move is to the capital rather than Dubai, the best IB schools in Abu Dhabi applies this same method to ADEK's framework. For what the Diploma is worth at the far end of all this, our IB university admissions guidance for Dubai page and how UAE universities recognise the IB Diploma handle recognition and equivalency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which IB school in Dubai is the best one?
No honest answer names a single school, because "best" depends on your child's subject combination, your community and your budget, and because the inspection ratings most rankings sort on were awarded in different years. A better question is which Dubai IB school is strongest in the two or three departments your child needs. Screen your shortlist on the school's published KHDA inspection report, confirm current IB programme authorisation on the IB's own Find an IB World School directory, then ask each school for last year's Diploma Programme cohort size and which Higher Level subjects actually ran.
How many IB students are there in Dubai?
Dubai had 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for 7% of private-school students, according to the Dubai Media Office release on the emirate's private school sector. The United Kingdom curriculum carries 37%, the Indian curricula 26% and the United States curricula 14%. The IB is therefore a minority curriculum in Dubai, which matters practically: the pool of IB-experienced teachers and tutors is proportionally smaller than for the British stream, and specialist Diploma Programme subject support is harder to secure at short notice.
Did KHDA stop inspecting Dubai schools?
KHDA announced in May 2025 that full inspections would not be conducted for Dubai private schools during the 2025-26 academic year, with schools still required to run external benchmark assessments and to submit regular self-evaluation form updates; this was reported by Gulf News and Khaleej Times. Gulf News reported on 3 June 2026 that oversight resumes from the 2026-27 academic year through short-notice quality assurance visits, with no more than 24 hours' notice. Confirm the current position on KHDA's own news pages, because the cycle has changed more than once.
Where can I check a Dubai school's KHDA rating myself?
Use the Education Directory on web.khda.gov.ae, which is KHDA's own school listing rather than a third party's copy. Search the exact school name as KHDA spells it — campus names matter, because a school with two Dubai campuses has two separate records — then read the overall rating together with the academic year it was awarded. Download the full inspection report and read the attainment and progress tables for the phase your child will enter, not just the headline band. A rating quoted without its year is not usable information.
What does an Acceptable rating mean for a Dubai school?
Acceptable is the minimum level required under the UAE School Inspection Framework, while Good is described as the expected level for every school in the UAE. So Acceptable is the floor, not the midpoint, and it should not be read the way three stars out of five reads on a review site. It does not automatically rule a school out: read the inspection report to see which of the framework's standards pulled the judgement down, because a school weak on facilities is a different proposition from one weak on teaching and assessment.
Does an IB school in Dubai still have to teach Arabic and Islamic Education?
Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Families arriving from abroad are often surprised, and Arabic is frequently the subject that needs the most support.
Are Dubai school fees going up for 2026-27?
No. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there will be no increase in school fees for private schools in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That freeze applies to school fees set by schools under KHDA's framework, not to tutoring, exam entry or any other third-party cost. If you are budgeting a move, the freeze plus the 16,846 new places created by the 2026-27 intake makes this an unusually parent-favourable moment in Dubai.
- total value of Dubai's second economic incentives package
- AED 2.5 billion
- the value KHDA attached to the school-fee measure within it
- AED 1.5 billion
- the fee increase private schools may apply for 2026-27
- 0%
- new places created by the 2026-27 intake
- 16,846
- new private schools in that intake, 4 UK curriculum and 3 International Baccalaureate
- 7
Announced by KHDA on 22 May 2026 and in its 2026-27 intake release. The freeze covers school fees only, not tutoring or exam entry.
The reason to read those five numbers together: a fee freeze on its own is relief, but a fee freeze alongside 16,846 new places is leverage, and it is the first time in years a Dubai IB family has had any.
How much does IB tutoring cost in Dubai?
Market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget or university-student tutors, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home one-to-one visit including travel, and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IB, IGCSE or A-Level specialist, with premium named tutors quoted at AED 500 to 650 and above. Those are provider-published bands read in October 2026, not IB Gram's prices. Monthly packages seen in the market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four in-home two-hour sessions.
Do you offer in-home IB tutoring in Dubai?
No. For families anywhere in the UAE, IB Gram teaches online, one to one, over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial lesson before you commit. In-home visiting tutors are an India-only service, and we will not promise a tutor at a Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah address. If an in-home tutor is what you specifically want, a local in-home provider is the honest route, and Dubai market rates for that run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour because travel time sits inside the rate.
Is IB Gram approved by KHDA?
No, and nobody offering one-to-one tutoring should imply otherwise without showing a permit number. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, involving initial approval, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation or partnership. Treat any provider describing its tutors as approved by KHDA as a warning sign, and ask it for the permit number. Our guide to KHDA's rules for private tutors in Dubai sets out what the regulator does and does not license.
Permit detail from u.ae, the MoHRE private tuition permit service and KHDA's educational services permit guidance. IB Gram holds neither.
The practical test: a one-to-one tutor should be able to name the first column, and anyone selling you the second column as proof of teaching quality has given you the wrong document.
Can my child's own school teacher tutor them privately in the UAE?
Not at their own school, and not without a permit. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, as reported by Gulf News; verify against the current ADEK policy document before relying on the exact wording. The permit itself is free of charge and valid for two years.
Can a tutor help with my child's Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?
A tutor can teach the underlying subject content, coach the research and writing process, read the assessment criteria with the student and give honest feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor cannot write, substantially rewrite or edit that work to completion, because the Internal Assessment, the 4,000-word Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work and the supervisor signs to confirm it. Any provider offering a completed Internal Assessment is selling your child an academic-misconduct risk that can cost them the Diploma.
Is it worth starting tutoring before my child changes school?
Usually yes, for one subject rather than four. A student moving into the Middle Years Programme or the Diploma Programme from a content-recall system is learning a different cognitive job — inquiry, criteria-referenced assessment, extended writing — and most lose a term of fluency regardless of how good the school is. Starting six to eight weeks before term in the single subject most likely to cause trouble, usually mathematics or the new language, converts that term into a few weeks. Our guide to the best time to start IB tutoring in Dubai works through the timing month by month, and moving to Dubai with IB children covers the rest of the relocation. Judge the school on the second report card, not the first.
