Best Areas in Dubai for IB Families: A Community-by-Community Guide

A community-by-community look at where IB and IGCSE families live in Dubai: the school-run arithmetic, which belts suit which programmes, and what the choice costs you in time and in AED.

Ranking the best areas in Dubai for IB families is a different problem from ranking the best areas in Dubai. Choosing where to live when your children are in the International Baccalaureate (IB) changes which questions matter. The property listings talk about pools, service charges and metro access. None of them tell you the thing that will actually shape the next five years of your household: how long the school run takes at 07:15 on a Tuesday in term time, which programmes the schools within a sensible radius actually offer, and whether there is a usable gap in the evening where a tutoring session can sit without colliding with homework, prayer, supper and sleep.

This guide is written for parents moving to Dubai, or moving within it, with children in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or the Diploma Programme (DP) — and for parents whose children are on a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) track and who will meet the same geography problem. It is deliberately not a list of schools. We explain below why we will not publish one, and what to read instead.

One thing to settle at the start, because it changes everything below: IB Gram delivers tutoring to families in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) online, one to one, over live video. We do not send a tutor to a Dubai address. That is a service we run in India, not here. So when the discussion below weighs commute time, it is weighing your child's commute, not a tutor's — and that turns out to be one of the more useful consequences of the online model, because it decouples the question "where should we live?" from the question "can we get a specialist DP Physics Higher Level (HL) tutor on a Wednesday?"

The takeaway: the in-home band sits above the online band at every level of expertise, and the gap is travel. That is the single reason your address stops mattering once the sessions are online — a point we come back to with attributed figures in the fee section below, and one our comparison of home versus online IB tutoring in Dubai takes further.

Which are the best areas in Dubai for IB families, and what makes them good?

A community suits an IB family when four things line up: the schools within a tolerable drive offer the programme your child is on, the drive stays tolerable in both directions at the times you will actually make it, the housing stock matches a household that needs quiet study space, and the weekday leaves a protected hour that revision can occupy for two years without a fight.

That last point is the one families underweight and then regret. A DP student carries six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). An MYP 4 or MYP 5 student carries eight subject groups and the Personal Project. In Dubai both of those sit alongside the mandatory UAE subjects, because the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with those requirements due to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year — April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April (KHDA mandatory subjects guidance). Your child's week is fuller than the subject list on the school website suggests.

So the honest ranking criterion is not prestige. It is: how many minutes a day does this address cost us, and what is left over?

Dubai's private school sector, by the numbers that matter to you

The 7% figure deserves a sentence of its own, because it explains a frustration almost every IB parent in Dubai eventually hits. Seven per cent of 387,441 students is a real population — tens of thousands of children — but it is spread across the full PYP-to-DP age range, across dozens of schools, and across the whole subject matrix. A British-curriculum Year 10 maths tutor serves a pool of 37% of the market. A DP Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL tutor serves a sliver of 7%, split again by subject and level. That is why "there must be someone nearby" turns out, so often, not to be true for the specific combination your child needs.

Dubai Hills Estate, Arabian Ranches and the Emirates Living belt: the central school corridor

If there is a default answer for an IB family with a car and a budget, it is the belt running from Emirates Living through Dubai Hills Estate to the three phases of Arabian Ranches. These are villa and townhouse communities built around internal road networks, which means the first and last five minutes of your journey are not spent in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic. Several of Dubai's international-curriculum schools sit inside or immediately beside these communities.

What you are buying here is not proximity to one school. It is optionality: from most of this belt, a reasonable number of schools across more than one curriculum are reachable without crossing the city. That matters more than it sounds, because the school you choose in PYP is frequently not the school you want in DP — subject offer at Higher Level is where schools diverge most, and a child who needs DP Economics HL and Visual Arts in the same timetable may have to move schools to get both.

The trade-off is cost and sprawl. Villa rents in this belt sit at the upper end, service charges are real, and the communities are large enough that "Arabian Ranches" covers three phases with meaningfully different drive times. If you are weighing a specific phase, our area pages for IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Estate set out the local picture in more detail, and the longer Arabian Ranches tutoring guide goes into the scheduling specifics for that community.

A practical note on the school run in this belt: because the communities are gated and the school gates feed off internal roads, congestion is concentrated into a short, sharp window rather than spread across a long commute. That is good for total minutes and bad for flexibility. Arriving eight minutes late at a Ranches school gate can cost more than arriving eight minutes late somewhere with a longer but freer-flowing approach.

The takeaway: the premium in Dubai Hills and the Ranches is not buying a shorter drive, it is buying the right to change schools without changing address — and subject-level support travels with you either way, whether that is IB chemistry tutoring in Arabian Ranches or MYP tutoring in Dubai Hills Estate.

Dubai Marina, JLT and JBR: the shortest school runs in the city, if you pick the right tower

The Marina corridor — Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT), Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), plus Al Sufouh and the media and internet city cluster behind it — is where the apartment-living IB family concentrates. Several international schools sit within a few kilometres, and for a family in the right tower the school run is measured in single-digit minutes.

"The right tower" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Within Dubai Marina the difference between a tower on the water side and one near the interchange can be fifteen minutes each way at 07:15, because the whole district drains through a small number of exits. This is the single most common mistake we hear about from families who chose a Marina apartment remotely: the map distance to the school was two kilometres, and the lived distance was twenty-five minutes.

The compensating advantage is genuine, and it is not just the commute. High-density living means the evening does not get eaten by driving. A student who is home by 15:40 instead of 16:40 has an extra hour five days a week, which over a DP cycle is the difference between an EE that is finished in good order and an EE that is finished in a panic. Families in this corridor are, in our experience, the ones who find it easiest to hold a fixed weekly online session, because the slot does not have to survive a commute.

The takeaway: in the Marina the tower matters more than the district. That recovered hour is the difference between an Extended Essay finished in good order and one finished in a panic, and it is also the easiest hour in Dubai to hold a fixed session in — IB maths tutoring in Dubai Marina is the slot most families there book first.

Our Dubai Marina area page and the dedicated Dubai Marina IB tutoring guide cover the tower-level detail. JLT and JBR have their own pages, as does Al Barsha immediately inland, which is often the compromise for families who want the school access without the tower.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa: the old-Dubai belt where IB arrived first

The coastal strip from Jumeirah 1 through Jumeirah 3, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Al Manara is Dubai's longest-established international-school geography. Housing here is predominantly older low-rise villas on larger plots, often with mature trees and, importantly, rooms with doors — which sounds trivial until you have tried to supervise an MYP Personal Project in an open-plan apartment while a younger sibling watches television.

Two structural features make this belt distinctive for IB families. The first is that the schools here are mostly long-established, which means their DP subject offer tends to be broad and their IB coordination mature; a school that has run the DP for fifteen years has usually solved the timetabling problems that a school in its second DP cohort is still discovering. The second is that Al Wasl Road, Jumeirah Beach Road and Sheikh Zayed Road run parallel through the strip, so there is almost always an alternative route — the opposite of the gated-community problem.

The cost is older building stock and, in parts of Jumeirah 1 and 2, limited parking. Rents are not cheap; you are paying for land and location. If you are comparing specific sub-communities, the area pages for Jumeirah 1, Jumeirah 2, Jumeirah 3, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa each set out what the neighbourhood is like for a studying household, and the Jumeirah IB tutoring guide goes further into how families there structure the week.

The takeaway: the old-Dubai belt is the one place in the city where being late is survivable, which is worth more to a studying household than it sounds. Subject support there starts at IGCSE maths tutoring in Jumeirah 1.

Mirdif, Al Khawaneej and the Festival City side: value that does not cost you an hour

The eastern side of the city is where the arithmetic changes most sharply in a family's favour, and it is systematically under-considered by new arrivals, who tend to orient themselves around the Marina-to-Downtown axis because that is what they saw on the internet.

Mirdif, Al Khawaneej, Al Warqa, Al Mizhar, Nad Al Sheba and the Dubai Festival City area offer villa and townhouse living at rents well below the Emirates Living belt, with schools inside or adjacent to the communities. For a family whose work does not require a daily trip to the Dubai International Financial Centre or Media City, this is often the best total-minutes outcome in the city. Mirdif in particular is dense with schools across several curricula.

The trade-off is two-sided. If one parent commutes to the Marina end of town, the eastern side is punishing — Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road at 07:30 is not a short journey. And the IB specifically is thinner on this side of the city than the British and Indian curricula are, so an IB family's school shortlist here is shorter than a British-curriculum family's would be. That is a real constraint and worth checking before you sign a tenancy contract, not after.

See the area pages for Mirdif, Al Khawaneej, Al Warqa, Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Festival City.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City: living next to the schools, with the catch nobody mentions

Dubai Silicon Oasis and the adjoining Dubai Academic City are the closest thing Dubai has to a purpose-built education district, and for a family with children at school and a student at university, the logic is hard to argue with. Rents are moderate, the apartment stock is newer than the Jumeirah villas, and several schools and higher-education institutions sit inside the district.

The catch is the one every resident will tell you about: Al Ain Road and the Academic City approaches carry a great deal of through traffic, and the district's own exits bottleneck in the morning. The in-district school run can be excellent. The out-of-district commute to central Dubai is not. If both parents work in Downtown or the financial district, model it honestly before committing.

The neighbouring communities — Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Academic City, International City and Al Qusais — each have their own page. The same logic in a different wrapper applies to the newer southern and inland communities: Motor City, Dubai Sports City, Jumeirah Village Circle, Town Square, DAMAC Hills and The Valley all trade commute minutes for space and rent.

The two sides new arrivals do not look at

The takeaway: both sides win on total minutes and both lose on IB shortlist length. Check the regulator's directory for IB-licensed schools inside your radius before you sign anything, because this is the one constraint neither rent nor traffic will warn you about.

The commute arithmetic no property listing will show you

Here is the part that is genuinely actionable, and it costs you one morning.

Before you sign anything, drive the route. Not on a Saturday afternoon when the agent is free — on a weekday in term time, leaving at the time you would actually leave, and again at the afternoon pick-up. Then drive it a second time in the opposite direction, because many Dubai school runs are asymmetric: the morning approach and the afternoon exit use different roads and have different failure modes.

We are not going to publish a table of minute-by-minute drive times, and you should be suspicious of any page that does. Nobody has measured them with a method you could check, they change with every road project, and a number that is wrong by fifteen minutes in a parent's planning is worse than no number at all. What we can give you is the structure of the decision.

Community typeHousing characterWhat the geography does to your weekWhere the risk sitsRealistic weekday session slot

Coastal villa belt (Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, Al Safa)Older low-rise villas, larger plotsMultiple parallel routes, so delays are recoverableOlder stock, parking pressureFlexible; most families hold two fixed slots

Newer inland communities (JVC, Motor City, Town Square, The Valley)Townhouses and apartments, newer buildSpace and rent in exchange for minutesLonger drive to established school clustersLater evening, which compresses homework

Read that table as a set of trade-offs, not a ranking. The right answer depends on where the working parents go each day, which is information no guide can have.

1Fix the programme firstDecide whether your child needs PYP, MYP, DP, IGCSE or a specific DP Higher Level combination. The programme narrows the school list far more than the area does.
2Check the regulator's directory, not a blogKHDA publishes the licensed schools and their inspection outcomes. That is the only list worth shortlisting from.
3Shortlist schools, then draw the radiusThree to five schools that can actually deliver the programme. Only then look at which communities sit inside the radius.
4Drive both directions in term timeMorning approach and afternoon exit, at the real times. This is the step families skip and regret.
5Test the evening, not just the morningWalk through a Tuesday: arrival home, snack, Arabic and Islamic Education homework, subject homework, a one-hour session, supper, sleep. If it does not fit, the address is wrong.
6Sign for one year, not threeSubject offer at Higher Level is where schools diverge. Keep the option to move when your child reaches DP1.
How to choose the community, in the order that actually matters

Why we will not hand you a list of the best IB schools in Dubai

This will read as a dodge. It is not.

Every school name on a tutoring website is a claim, and most of those claims are unverified. In researching the Dubai tutoring market we found pages listing twenty-five or more schools under headings like "trusted by", with no relationship of any kind behind them, and at least one page listing a school that does not appear to exist. We are not going to add to that. We have no partnership, affiliation or endorsement from any Dubai school, and we will not imply one by publishing a curated list and letting you draw the inference.

The second reason is that "best" is not a property of a school; it is a property of a match. A school with an outstanding inspection rating and no DP Visual Arts at Higher Level is the wrong school for a child who needs DP Visual Arts at Higher Level. A school with a narrower offer and a mature IB coordination team may be the right one for a child who needs structure.

What to do instead: use the KHDA's own school directory and published inspection outcomes for Dubai schools, and the equivalent authority for whichever emirate you are considering. The regulator spells the school names correctly, publishes the actual inspection rating and the actual curriculum licence, and has no commercial interest in your conclusion.

1Open the regulator's own directoryKHDA for Dubai, and the equivalent authority for whichever emirate you are considering
2Filter by curriculum licence, not by reputationA school's licence tells you which programme it may actually deliver
3Read the published inspection outcomeThe rating the regulator published, not the one quoted in marketing
4Check the Higher Level option blocksThis is where schools diverge most, and where "best" becomes a question about your child
5Ask how many DP cohorts have graduatedA school fifteen years into the DP has solved timetabling problems a second-cohort school is still finding
6Then, and only then, draw the radiusThe school list narrows the area. The area never narrows the school list
What to do instead of reading a tutoring site's school list

The takeaway: every step on that list is free, published and checkable, which is more than can be said for any curated "top schools" page — including one that lists a school which does not appear to exist.

What the area premium is really buying — and what it is not

Families routinely pay a rent premium to be near a particular school, and then discover that the premium did not buy the thing they wanted. Three honest observations.

First, proximity does not buy admission. Dubai school places are allocated by the school, and a tenancy contract across the road is not a catchment right. The 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools — four UK curriculum and three IB — creating 16,846 new places, with six schools having opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rising 6% (KHDA). Supply is growing, which is good news, but new IB places arriving in a community you have already left is not much help.

Second, the fee environment is, for now, stable. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total (KHDA). That is a genuine piece of planning certainty and the right anchor for any conversation about what tutoring costs on top.

Third, proximity does not buy subject coverage. This is where the online model earns its place in the argument. The thing a Dubai IB family most often cannot find locally is not a maths tutor; it is a tutor for a specific subject at a specific level — DP Chemistry HL, DP Economics HL, MYP Extended Mathematics, Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606. Geography does not solve that. A live video session does, because the pool a video call draws from is not the pool within twenty minutes of your villa.

What the area premium does and does not buy

The takeaway: the premium buys a shorter drive and nothing else. It does not buy a place, it does not buy a fee discount, and it cannot buy a DP Chemistry HL specialist into your postcode.

What tutoring actually costs in Dubai, whichever area you land in

Two separate questions get tangled here: what the market charges, and what in-home delivery costs on top. Both are worth seeing plainly.

We do not publish a fixed hourly rate on a page like this, because the right plan for a PYP child needing confidence in number work and a DP2 student six months from final examinations are not the same product. The honest route is a trial session and a conversation.

Where the five Dubai rate tiers sit against each other

Now the part that connects back to geography. Notice that the in-home band sits above the online band at every equivalent level of expertise. That gap is not a premium for better teaching; it is travel. A tutor who drives from Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches and back has spent ninety minutes earning one hour, and the rate reflects it. In a city shaped like Dubai, the travel component of an in-home fee is a geography tax, and the further out your community sits, the higher it is.

  • Driving, both directions90 min
  • Teaching60 min
Where an in-home tutoring hour actually goes, Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches

The takeaway: on that run three of every five minutes you pay for are spent in a car. Nothing about the teaching improves because the tutor arrived by road, which is why our IB home tutor fee breakdown for Dubai treats travel as a separate line rather than part of the rate.

What a month of weekly sessions costs, by tier

The takeaway: the in-home package is the most expensive line on the ladder and is not the most specialist one. Four two-hour visits a month cost more than an examination-year plan with a named subject specialist — and our breakdown of IGCSE tutor fees in Dubai runs the same arithmetic on the British track.

How IB families in each area actually fit tutoring into the week

The scheduling pattern differs by community, and it differs for a reason that has nothing to do with the tutoring and everything to do with when the child gets home.

In the tower districts — Marina, JLT, JBR, Business Bay, Downtown — the usable slot is the late afternoon, because the commute that would have consumed it does not exist. Families here commonly hold a 16:30 or 17:00 session, finish before supper, and keep the evening for homework. That is the easiest pattern to sustain across a two-year DP cycle.

In the gated villa belt the slot moves later, usually to early evening, because the school run plus the gate window pushes arrival home past 16:00. The risk in these communities is slot creep: the session drifts to 19:30, which collides with supper and then with sleep, and by February of DP2 the family is cancelling.

In the eastern value belt school days often end earlier and the drive home is short, which produces the widest choice of slots of any part of the city. Families in Mirdif and Al Khawaneej are frequently the ones who successfully run two sessions a week rather than one.

In the newer inland communities the slot is latest and the schedule is tightest, because the drive to established school clusters is long in both directions. Here the single most valuable scheduling decision is to protect one specific hour on one specific day for the whole term, rather than negotiating it each week.

1Arrival homeThe number the property listing will never tell you. Drive it in term time to find out
2Snack and decompressTwenty minutes that every family plans to skip and no family actually skips
3Arabic and Islamic Education homeworkMandatory in every Dubai private school under KHDA rules, whatever the licensed curriculum
4Subject homeworkSix DP subjects, or eight MYP subject groups, plus the Personal Project or the Extended Essay
5The one-hour sessionThe hour you are testing for. If it only exists on paper, it will not exist in February of the exam year
6Supper and sleepThe two things that get cut when the hour above has to be found somewhere
A Tuesday evening at the address you are considering

The takeaway: run that list against a candidate address before you sign, not after. The whole point of our guide to the MYP for Dubai parents is that the MYP week is fuller than the subject list implies, and the address either has room for it or does not.

Across all of them, our online IB tutoring page for Dubai and the online IGCSE equivalent set out how the sessions themselves run, and the Dubai hub page links the full set of area and subject pages.

Named by month only, because series dates move. Confirm every date against your school's examinations officer and the board's live timetable.

Your first year in Dubai, in the order it happens

The exam calendar constraint that should shape your move date

One point on timing, because it is the thing that causes avoidable damage and almost no relocation guide mentions it.

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that "it is essential that you use the correct version of the timetable for your zone", warning that it "cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam" after the wrong zone timetable has been used (Cambridge exams officers guide).

Read that twice if you are moving mid-year. A family relocating from India may be used to a Cambridge sitting early in the calendar year — that sitting is offered to India only. In the UAE your child sits June and November. If the move happens between series, the entry you thought was made may not have been made.

The Cambridge exam year as a UAE candidate sits it

The takeaway: look at what is not lit between January and April. A family arriving from India is used to an early-calendar-year sitting that simply does not exist for a UAE candidate, and our UAE IGCSE exam timetable guide sets out the two series that do.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. The November final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026 (Pearson exam timetables). Those past dates are given with their years deliberately, so that you can check them. For any future series, take the dates from the board's live timetable and your school's examinations officer, not from a web page.

For IB dates, do not take a figure from any tutoring website, including this one. Confirm the session window and the results dates with your school's IB coordinator or on the IB's own assessment pages. Our longer pieces on the IGCSE exam timetable in the UAE and moving to Dubai with IB children take this further.

What a tutor may and may not do, wherever you live

A short section, because it protects your child and because two providers in this market get it badly wrong.

A tutor teaches, explains, models method, sets practice, and gives feedback on the student's own work. A tutor does not write, complete, edit to completion or supply an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay, a TOK essay or any assessed coursework. In the researched market we found a provider selling completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. Buying that is an academic-honesty breach under IB rules and an expulsion risk for the student. There is no version of it that is safe.

Equally: nobody can promise a grade, and any page that does is telling you something about itself. We publish no guaranteed outcomes, and we hold no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership — a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with physical premises, and we will not imply we hold one.

On tutor legality, the position is clear and worth knowing as a parent hiring anyone in the UAE: individuals providing private lessons require a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and those operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so you should distrust any page quoting an amount. The official route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. In Abu Dhabi there is an additional layer: ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct bars the same thing. If you are being offered "your child's own teacher, privately", that is a reason to stop, not a selling point.

The UAE private tutor permit, by the published facts

The takeaway: a legal tutor can show you a free, two-year, two-day permit, so there is no reason for anyone in this market to be vague about it. We go through the permit in full in the UAE private tutor work permit explained and the Dubai-specific layer in KHDA rules for private tutors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which area of Dubai is best for a family with children in the IB Diploma Programme?

There is no single best area, but the belt from Emirates Living through Dubai Hills Estate to Arabian Ranches is the most common default for DP families with a car, because it puts several international-curriculum schools within a short internal-road drive and keeps options open if your child needs to change schools for a Higher Level subject. The Marina, JLT and JBR corridor is the strongest choice for apartment-living families who want the shortest possible school run. Decide the programme and the Higher Level subject combination first, shortlist schools from the KHDA directory, and only then draw the radius.

Does living next to a Dubai IB school improve the chance of getting a place?

No. Dubai school places are allocated by the school, and a tenancy contract nearby confers no catchment right. Dubai operates 227 private schools serving 387,441 students across 17 curricula, and supply is expanding — the 2026-27 intake adds seven schools and 16,846 places, three of the new schools being IB. Apply on the school's own timeline, keep more than one application live, and treat proximity as a convenience benefit for the next five years of school runs rather than an admissions advantage.

How much does IB tutoring cost per hour in Dubai?

Market rates read in October 2026 run roughly AED 45–150 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150–300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180–500 for an in-home visit including the tutor's travel, AED 200–450 or more for an IB or IGCSE specialist, and AED 500–650 or more at the premium end. Those are other providers' published figures, attributed in the rates table above with the date each was read. IB Gram does not publish a fixed hourly rate for every case, because a PYP confidence gap and a DP2 examination-term plan are different pieces of work.

Can we book an in-home IB tutor at our Dubai address through IB Gram?

No. Tutoring for families in the UAE is delivered online, one to one, over live video. Sending a tutor to a home address is a service IB Gram runs in India, not in the UAE, and we will not promise a tutor at a Dubai address. The Dubai in-home market exists and charges roughly AED 180–500 an hour, with the gap above the online band being travel time rather than better teaching. Online delivery also widens the pool for scarce subject-and-level combinations that no single neighbourhood can supply.

Are school fees in Dubai going up for the coming academic year?

KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That is a freeze on the school fee itself, announced by the regulator rather than by any school. It does not cover transport, uniform, trips or examination entry costs, and it says nothing about tutoring rates, which are set privately. Verify the current position on KHDA's own announcements page before relying on it for a budget.

Why is it so hard to find an IB specialist tutor near our Dubai villa?

Because the pool is smaller than it looks. IB students make up about 7% of Dubai's private school population, against 37% on UK curricula and 26% on Indian curricula. That 7% is then split across PYP, MYP and DP, and split again by subject and by level. A tutor for DP Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or for MYP Extended Mathematics, is serving a very narrow slice of that. Geography cannot fix a supply problem of that shape, which is the practical argument for live video delivery.

Do IB and IGCSE students in Dubai still have to take Arabic and Islamic Education?

Yes. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with the requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year — April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Factor these subjects into your child's weekly workload when planning any tutoring.

Which emirate regulator should I check before choosing a school?

It depends on the emirate. Dubai schools are regulated by KHDA; Abu Dhabi and Al Ain by ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools; Sharjah by the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Ras Al Khaimah by its Department of Knowledge; and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah by the federal Ministry of Education. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities also approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Use the regulator's own directory for school names, curriculum licences and inspection outcomes rather than a tutoring site's list.

When in the year should we move to Dubai if our child is in an exam year?

If you can choose, move in the summer holiday rather than mid-year, because an examination-year move between series can break an entry. Cambridge IGCSE candidates in the UAE sit the June and November series; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. A family arriving from India should note that Cambridge's early-calendar-year sitting is offered to India only, so the series pattern they are used to does not apply here. Confirm the entry status directly with the new school's examinations officer in the first week.

Is the eastern side of Dubai a bad choice for an IB family?

Not bad, but narrower. Mirdif, Al Khawaneej, Al Warqa, Al Mizhar and Nad Al Sheba offer villa living at rents well below the Emirates Living belt, with schools inside or beside the communities and often the widest choice of evening tutoring slots in the city, because school days end earlier and the drive home is short. The constraint is that IB provision is thinner on this side than British or Indian curriculum provision, so the IB school shortlist is shorter. Check the KHDA directory for IB-licensed schools within your radius before signing a tenancy contract.

Can we hire our child's own class teacher for private lessons in the UAE?

You should not seek this out. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Separately, any individual offering private lessons in the UAE needs that MoHRE permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. A provider marketing a child's own teacher privately is a warning sign.

How do we know a tutor in the UAE is working legally?

Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit. It is issued through MoHRE's "Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing" service, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, listed with no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and valid for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so distrust any page quoting an amount.

What is the single most useful thing we can do before signing a tenancy contract?

Drive the school run in term time, in both directions, at the real times — the morning approach and the afternoon exit, which in Dubai frequently use different roads and fail in different ways. Then walk through a hypothetical Tuesday evening at that address: arrival home, Arabic and Islamic Education homework, subject homework, a one-hour session, supper, sleep. If the hour for the session does not exist on paper, it will not exist in February of the examination year either, and no amount of good intention will create it.
