IB and IGCSE tutors for Dubai Marina families

Families looking for IB and IGCSE tutors in Dubai Marina are rarely worried about what happens in lessons. They are worried about the part of the course that happens outside them: the internal assessment nobody is teaching, the Extended Essay with a school deadline in eleven weeks, the Year 10 topic that was covered once in October. This page is about that half of the course. Lessons run live online, one to one, timed to the Marina school run.

  • Lessons run live online over video, scheduled around the Marina school run
  • Work follows your child's own school deadlines, not a generic scheme
  • One free trial lesson with a subject specialist before any payment
  • Home visits are an India-only service; Marina delivery is online

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Marina

The lessons are fine. It is the unsupervised half that slips

Schools around Dubai Marina are, on the whole, well staffed and well inspected. A Diploma student at a school in Al Sufouh or Jumeirah Park is being taught the syllabus by subject specialists on a timetable that covers it. So when a Marina parent starts looking for a tutor, the trigger is usually not a teaching failure. It is the discovery that a large and heavily weighted part of the Diploma, and a smaller but decisive part of IGCSE, is produced by the student on their own time, to deadlines the school sets and the family never saw.

The arithmetic is worth seeing plainly. A Diploma student runs an internal assessment in each of six subjects, each one an independent piece of work over weeks or months. On top of that sits an Extended Essay with a 4,000-word limit, a Theory of Knowledge essay with a 1,600-word limit and a Theory of Knowledge exhibition, plus the Creativity, Activity, Service requirement. None of those is delivered in a taught period in the way a syllabus topic is. Each has a school-set internal deadline, and those deadlines are earlier than almost every family expects.

At IGCSE the equivalent gap is narrower but sharper. Class time covers the syllabus once. What it does not cover is the volume of past-paper practice that converts knowledge into marks, the recurring question types that appear every series, and the specific presentational conventions a mark scheme rewards. A Year 10 student who understood a topic in October and has not touched it since will meet it again in a Year 11 mock and perform as if they never learned it. That is a spacing problem, not a comprehension problem.

Which is why the useful first question for a Marina family is not which tutor is best but what exactly is unsupervised. Six internal assessments, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and two years of retention are four different jobs with four different fixes, and only one of them looks like weekly tutoring. Confusing them produces a lot of hours and very little movement, which is the commonest pattern in this market.

Dubai Marina adds its own practical constraints. Households are mostly apartments, often with one quiet room shared between siblings and a parent on a call. The school run runs on a bus or a car along Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Sufouh Road, so a child is frequently not home and settled until well after four. And the area's population turns over quickly, so a tutor recommendation from a neighbour may be about a child at a different school on a different syllabus.

Lessons here are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. In a tower household that is usually an advantage rather than a compromise: no travel sitting inside the hourly rate, no coordination of a visitor past a concierge, and a specialist chosen for the subject and the syllabus code rather than for living within a twenty-minute drive.

At a glance

  • A Diploma student manages six internal assessments plus the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge components
  • The Extended Essay has a 4,000-word limit; the Theory of Knowledge essay 1,600 words
  • Internal deadlines are set by the school and usually fall well before the exam session
  • At IGCSE the gap is retention and past-paper volume rather than content coverage
  • Marina school runs on Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Sufouh Road push a realistic session start past four o'clock
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Schools in and around the Marina run the full IB continuum and the British route to IGCSE, and the unsupervised component differs at each stage. These notes are about that, not about the programme in general.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external examinations and no coursework deadlines, so the independent half barely exists yet. What does exist is reading volume, and it is the one thing a primary programme assumes and does not supervise. A child who reads at home becomes a student who can handle the Diploma's reading load; a child who does not arrives at Year 7 short of it.

Around the Marina the practical obstacle is the length of the day: a bus from a tower to Al Barsha or Jumeirah Park and back absorbs a large part of the afternoon, and the reading that the programme relies on competes with swimming, football and the pool downstairs. Primary tutoring is rarely the answer here; a protected reading slot usually is.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7 to 11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP introduces the independent habit through criterion-assessed tasks and the Personal Project in the final year. Criteria reward process, planning and reflection, which are exactly the parts a student completes alone, and which parents cannot see going wrong until a grade arrives.

Several schools near the Marina run MYP to Year 9 and switch to IGCSE for Years 10 and 11, while others run MYP 5 straight into the Diploma. That matters because the two routes produce different unsupervised loads: one leads to external papers with past papers to practise, the other to internal tasks with criteria to decode.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12 to 13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with an internal assessment in each, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. The taught syllabus is the part the school controls. The internal components are produced by the student across two years, and the school's own deadlines govern them.

Confirm every Diploma date with your school's coordinator rather than with a third-party page: UAE schools sit the May session, but no IB session or results date in this project has been verified from the IB itself. The binding dates for a Marina family are the school's internal deadlines anyway, and those are published in the school's own assessment calendar.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10 to 11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Two years, external papers, and syllabus codes that decide everything: 0580 and 0625 for Cambridge Mathematics and Physics, 4MA1 and 4PH1 for the Pearson equivalents. Many Cambridge subjects split into Core and Extended, with the tier capping the grade available, which is a decision taken at entry rather than at results.

The unsupervised part here is retention and practice volume. Class time covers the syllabus once across two years; nothing in the timetable returns a Year 10 topic to a student in Year 11 before the mock. Spaced retrieval and marked past papers against the exact code are what close that, and they are straightforward to run weekly.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

For each subject the question is the same: which part of it is taught in lessons and which part is left to the student. These notes name the second part.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Lessons cover the syllabus; the exploration does not teach itself. The internal assessment rewards a narrow, genuinely personal mathematical question explored properly, and the commonest failure is an ambitious topic abandoned halfway. Higher Level adds a paper three investigation that no amount of content revision prepares a student for.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling and statistics route, where the exploration usually involves the student's own data and therefore their own collection problems. Technology fluency is assumed throughout and is rarely taught explicitly, so a student who uses the graphing tool only in class loses time in the examination.

Physics

HL and SL

Class practicals demonstrate; the internal assessment demands an investigation the student designed, with uncertainty handled honestly and limitations identified. A verification of a known relationship scores poorly by design. The other unsupervised part is the extended explanation question, which needs practice rather than revision.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics are taught well in most schools around the Marina. What is left to the student is an independent investigation with a question narrow enough to produce usable data, and the discipline to start it before the term it is due. Both are schedulable.

Biology

HL and SL

The content is covered thoroughly; command-term discipline is the gap. Explain, outline, suggest, distinguish and evaluate each demand a different structure, and a complete answer that ignores the term scores in the middle bands. The internal assessment adds a design problem the syllabus does not address.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Set texts are taught; the individual oral is largely assembled by the student, who has to choose a global issue, select two extracts that genuinely support it and sustain an argument under time. The Higher Level essay is the other unsupervised component, and a question too broad is the usual cause of a middling mark.

Economics

HL and SL

Theory and diagrams come from lessons. The commentary work asks the student to find a published article, select the relevant theory and write to a tight structure, which is a research and selection skill rather than an economics one. Article choice decides more of the mark than most students believe.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study technique is taught; the internal assessment requires a real organisation, a narrow question and primary or secondary research the student organises alone. Broad questions produce broad answers, and narrowing the question early is the single highest-value intervention available.

Theory of Knowledge

Core component

Taught in a thin timetable slot in most schools and assessed through an essay with a 1,600-word limit on a prescribed title, plus an exhibition. Students who treat it as a general discussion subject underperform; the essay rewards a tightly argued position with counter-claims, which is a structure that can be taught in a couple of sessions.

Extended Essay

Core component · 4,000 words

A supervisor is assigned and meets the student a handful of times across a year. Everything between those meetings is unsupervised. The failure pattern is consistent: a question too large, reading started too late, and a first full version produced in the fortnight before the school's deadline rather than months earlier.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

At IGCSE the unsupervised work is practice rather than coursework, and it is specific to the syllabus code. These are the subjects Marina families most often ask about.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1

The tier decision caps the grade, and it is made at entry. Beyond that the whole game is marked past papers: recurring question types, method marks, and the habit of showing a line of working that earns credit even when the final answer is wrong.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Electricity and fields are where marks disappear, because both reward algebraic confidence under time pressure. Practical questions ask about apparatus, error and results from experiments the student has done once, which is why practical papers need their own practice rather than general revision.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Moles and the quantitative topics separate grades more than any other content area. The other recurring loss is the practical and data paper, where questions about method and sources of error are marked on precision rather than on recall.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Content heavy and the most forgiving of the three sciences to revise, and the most punishing of imprecise language. Marks go to the specific term rather than to a description of it, which is a habit built through marked answers instead of reading.

First Language English

Cambridge 0500; Pearson 4EA1

Directed writing is the component where students who read well still lose marks, because it is assessed on register and audience rather than on quality of prose. Marked drafts against the published criteria move this faster than anything else.

Economics and Business Studies

Cambridge 0455 and 0450

Both reward applying a named concept to the specific case in the question. Students who define well and apply loosely sit in the middle bands. Data-response technique and diagram accuracy are trainable from past papers with a mark scheme in hand.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478

Confident coders frequently underperform on the theory paper, particularly on data representation and on the precise pseudocode conventions the mark scheme expects. The fix is paper practice rather than more programming.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606

Taken by stronger cohorts around the Marina as a bridge into Higher Level Diploma mathematics or A Level. It is unforgiving of gaps in algebraic fluency, and it is the subject where a weekly hour of supervised practice pays back most visibly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Marina families tend to need one of three things, and the first is frequently mistaken for the third, which is how a household ends up buying weekly hours for a problem that needed a schedule.

Coursework supervision across a term

Structured support through the months an internal assessment or the Extended Essay actually runs: narrowing the question, understanding how each criterion is applied, planning against the school's own deadline, and feedback on drafts the student has written. The schedule is the product as much as the teaching is.

  • The school's internal deadline used as the fixed point, not a generic plan
  • The research question narrowed before any data or reading is committed to
  • Criterion-by-criterion explanation of what the marker credits
  • Feedback on the student's own work; nothing is ever written for submission

Weekly one-to-one on a named subject

One or two sessions a week with the same tutor on a subject that is genuinely behind, scheduled late enough to sit after the Marina school run and after sport. Work follows the student's own syllabus code and school assessment calendar rather than a fixed curriculum.

  • Same tutor weekly, so context does not have to be rebuilt each time
  • Past papers for the exact syllabus code, marked against the official scheme
  • Session notes after each lesson naming what was covered and set
  • Slots up to late evening, with rescheduling when a school trip intervenes

Retention and practice block before mocks

A compressed run of sessions that returns Year 10 content to a Year 11 student before the mock window, or DP1 content to a DP2 student. This is spaced retrieval rather than teaching, and it is the cheapest way to fix the IGCSE gap that is about forgetting rather than understanding.

  • Topics returned in a deliberate order rather than revised front to back
  • Marked full-length papers under time, not question-by-question drilling
  • A written list of the topics that failed retrieval, for the family to see
  • Ends when the mock window closes rather than rolling on by default

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Marina

01

What a Marina parent is usually actually asking

  • A behind subject needs weekly teaching; a coursework deadline needs supervision
  • A strong student with no plan needs a calendar before they need a tutor
  • Ask what has been assessed and what the next fixed date is
  • Check which school and which syllabus code a neighbour's recommendation came from

Three requests arrive from Dubai Marina households in roughly equal numbers, and they look identical in a first message. The first is a subject that is genuinely behind, where a topic was not understood and the student has fallen further each term. The second is a coursework component with a school deadline approaching and nothing on paper. The third is a strong student whose grades are good and whose parents suspect, correctly, that nobody is supervising the independent half of the course.

These three need different purchases. The first needs weekly teaching in that subject. The second needs a term of structured supervision built around the school's own deadline. The third needs a planning session and a schedule, and frequently no ongoing tutoring at all. A provider that sells weekly hours to all three is serving its own revenue, and the third case is where that does most damage: a capable student loses an evening a week to a lesson they do not need while the Extended Essay goes on sitting untouched.

The way to tell them apart in one conversation is to ask what has actually been assessed and when the next fixed date is. A student with falling internal grades across a term in one subject is case one. A student with a supervisor meeting next month and no research question is case two. A student with solid grades, an unclear idea of their internal assessment deadlines and an Extended Essay topic chosen but not started is case three, and the first useful thing anybody can hand them is a calendar.

Marina families are also unusually likely to arrive with a recommendation from a neighbour. It is worth asking two questions about it: which school and which syllabus. The Marina draws on at least two distinct school clusters running different programmes and different boards, and a tutor who was excellent for a Pearson 4MA1 candidate in Year 11 may be the wrong match for a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches student at a different school.

02

The half of the Diploma that nobody teaches in a lesson

A Diploma student carries a set of components that are examined but not taught in the way a syllabus topic is taught. Each subject has an internal assessment produced by the student over weeks. The Extended Essay is an independent research piece with a 4,000-word limit and a supervisor who meets the student a handful of times. The Theory of Knowledge essay has a 1,600-word limit and is written on a prescribed title, alongside an exhibition. Creativity, Activity, Service runs across both years and has to be evidenced.

The weighting is not marginal. Internal assessments contribute a substantial share of each subject grade, and the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combine to contribute up to three further points on top of the subject total. A student who produces six rushed internal assessments and a late Extended Essay has given away more points than they would lose from a weak paper in a single subject. The components also compete with each other, because they land in overlapping windows set by the school.

The school's internal deadlines are the dates that matter, and they are published in the school's assessment calendar rather than announced. Confirm every Diploma date with your school's coordinator rather than from a third-party page: UAE schools sit the May session, but no IB session or results date in this project has been verified from the IB itself. What is verifiable from the school is when each internal assessment draft is due, and that is the information a plan is built on.

The useful intervention is unglamorous. Put every internal deadline on one page in date order. Work backwards from each to a date for the question, a date for data or reading, and a date for a full version. Then look at where three components collide and move the one with the most flexible deadline. That exercise takes an hour, and it prevents the specific failure that costs Marina students points: three deadlines in the same fortnight, all addressed at once, all rushed.

03

Where IGCSE marks go missing between Year 10 and the final paper

  • The IGCSE gap is forgetting, not misunderstanding, and retrieval fixes it
  • Top grades need more marked practice than a school timetable provides
  • Core and Foundation tiers cap the grade available, and the tier is set at entry
  • Ask the school in writing which tier each subject has been entered at

At IGCSE the unsupervised gap is not coursework. It is the twenty-month interval between learning a topic and being examined on it, during which nothing in the timetable brings it back. A student who understood electricity in Year 10 and meets it in a Year 11 mock has forgotten the parts that were never retrieved, and the mock reads as a collapse in ability. It is nothing of the kind, and treating it as one leads to a term of re-teaching content the student already met.

The second loss is practice volume. A school covers the syllabus and sets past papers in the final months. A student aiming at the top grades needs considerably more marked practice than that, spread across both years, because the recurring question types in a syllabus are learnable and the mark-scheme conventions are not obvious. Showing a line of working that earns method marks when the final answer is wrong is a trained habit, not an instinct.

The third is the tier decision, which is made at entry and caps what is achievable. In the Cambridge model many subjects split into Core and Extended, and Pearson into Foundation and Higher. A student entered for a capped tier cannot reach a grade above the ceiling however well they perform, and the decision sits on the entry form months before the papers. Marina parents should ask the school which tier each subject has been entered at and what grade it caps at, in writing.

What fixes the first two is cheap and dull: spaced retrieval of old topics in a deliberate order, and marked full-length papers under time against the exact syllabus code. What fixes the third is a conversation with the school before entries close. A Marina family sits Cambridge in the June series, with November available as the resit route; the February/March series is offered in India and is not an option here. Entries for June close in the spring, months ahead of the first paper, and by then the subject list, the tier and the syllabus code are fixed, which is a useful illustration of how early those decisions harden.

04

What tutoring costs around Dubai Marina, with the rates attributed

Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote United States dollars rather than dirhams. The figures below are market rates in dirhams with the publisher named, so a Marina household has a reference point before the first call. They are other providers' numbers, not a price list for this site.

Budget online tutoring, generally delivered by university students, is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one visits, which carry the tutor's travel inside the rate, run AED 180 to 350 on Bestimate's Dubai table and AED 200 to 500 from independent home tutors. IB and IGCSE specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium named tutors reach AED 650 as published by BartyED.

For a Marina household the variable that moves the number most is specificity rather than ambition. A Standard Level subject for a Year 12 student is widely supplied. Higher Level Chemistry in the final term, Theory of Knowledge essay supervision, or a Pearson code a school uses and few tutors have taught, are thinly supplied and price accordingly. Rates also rise as a session approaches, which argues for buying coursework supervision in the autumn rather than intensive hours in the spring.

Put next to school fees the figures read differently. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year in Dubai, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Monthly tutoring packages visible in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, with Bestimate estimating AED 240 to 600 a month for budget weekly sessions and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support.

In-home tutoring in Dubai Marina compared with one-to-one online

Parents search for a home tutor in Dubai Marina because it is the phrase that describes what they want: someone whose whole attention is on their child. That is a reasonable thing to want and it is what one-to-one teaching delivers. The question worth examining is whether the person needs to be in the room, and in a Marina tower the answer is usually no, for reasons that have nothing to do with pedagogy.

The practical arithmetic is the travel. An in-home visit prices the tutor's journey into the hour, and a journey into the Marina at five o'clock is not a short one. The rate reflects it: Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online tutor, and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. The same money buys a more specialised tutor online, or more hours of the same one.

The larger constraint is the pool. An in-home arrangement limits the choice to tutors willing to travel to the Marina at the time your child is free, which for a Higher Level Chemistry specialist in March is close to nobody. Online, the constraint disappears and the match is made on the subject, the level and the syllabus code. For a household whose child needs Theory of Knowledge essay supervision or a specific Pearson code, that difference is the whole decision.

To be explicit about what is on offer here: IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service offered only in India. Lessons for Marina families run online, one to one, over live video, scheduled around the school run. The honest version of the comparison is in the table below, including the cases where an in-home tutor genuinely is the better answer.

Where the hour comes from in a Marina week

  • Write down the hour the child is genuinely at a desk, not the hour they are home
  • In most Marina households the realistic start is later than four o'clock
  • Agree the study space as a rota in advance when siblings share a quiet room
  • Plan around Ramadan, travel and school trips rather than assuming a clear term

The most common reason a tutoring arrangement fails in this area is not the tutor. It is that nobody worked out, before agreeing a weekly slot, which hour was actually free. A Marina week is dense: a school run that lands between four and five depending on the route and the bus, swimming or football on two or three evenings, siblings on different schedules, and a flat where the quiet room is also where a parent takes calls.

Working out the real availability takes ten minutes and prevents months of friction. Write down, for each weekday, the time the child is actually at a desk with the door shut. For most Marina households that is later than parents assume, often after half past five, and on two evenings it does not exist at all. Then choose one or two of the remaining slots, and protect them. A session at an hour that only works when everything goes right will be cancelled twice and then abandoned.

The second logistical variable is the space itself. Online lessons need a corner the student can occupy for an hour without negotiation, headphones, and a connection that holds. In a two or three bedroom apartment with two children in school, that frequently means a rota rather than a room, and a rota works if it is agreed in advance and fails if it is improvised. Families with two children in the Diploma often stagger sessions on different evenings for exactly this reason.

The third is the calendar beyond the week. Half terms, travel over the long breaks, Ramadan with its shortened school hours and post-iftar study pattern, and school trips all interrupt a weekly arrangement. A plan that assumes thirty-six uninterrupted weeks is a plan that will miss its own deadlines. Building in the interruptions, and treating the week before Ramadan as a deadline for anything that would otherwise sit unfinished, is more useful than adding hours.

07

Counting backwards from the dates that actually bind

Of the competitor pages researched for this project, the word November returned no hits at all: no session named, no registration deadline, no results date. For a Marina family that absence is the reason a coursework plan slips, because the dates that bind a Diploma or IGCSE student are mostly not the ones published in a school newsletter.

For IGCSE the board dates are published and precise. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. The zone belongs to the school, so ask which one it is in.

Count the June series backwards and the pattern is clear. The papers themselves run across May and June on a timetable Cambridge issues per administrative zone, results reach Cambridge Direct in August, and the printed certificates follow months after that. Work back from the papers and entries have already closed in the spring, forecast grades were submitted before that, and the school's own internal assessment deadlines sat earlier still, which is why the useful conversation happens in the autumn term. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year, with the November 2026 final timetable running to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to a zone and Pearson publishes and revises provisional timetables, so always work from the live official version for your centre rather than from a date someone remembers.

For the Diploma the binding dates are the school's own. UAE schools sit the May session, but no IB session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, so every Diploma date should come from your school's coordinator or ibo.org. What the school can give you is the internal deadline for each internal assessment, the Extended Essay milestones and the Theory of Knowledge submission dates, which is what a plan is actually built from.

When a weekly session is the wrong purchase

  • A capable student with no schedule needs a plan, not a weekly lesson
  • Four weekly tutors leaves no time for the components that carry the points
  • Falling grades sometimes signal sleep, anxiety or upheaval rather than teaching
  • A wrong subject level is a conversation with the coordinator, not a two-year support plan

There are several situations in which buying a weekly hour is a worse decision than doing nothing, and a Marina family is more likely than most to be sold one, because the area is well supplied with providers and households here are used to buying services. Naming the cases is more useful than listing benefits.

The first is the capable student with no plan. Grades are fine, the problem is three internal deadlines in one fortnight and an Extended Essay that exists as a topic. What they need is an hour with a calendar, a narrowed research question and a schedule, which is a one-off piece of work. A weekly subject lesson takes the evening in which they could have been doing the thing that is actually behind.

The second is the student with too many sessions already. A Diploma student with four weekly tutors has no discretionary time left, and the independent components are precisely what gets squeezed. Cutting tutoring in the two subjects that are performing well usually raises the total, because it returns the hours to the coursework. That is an uncomfortable recommendation for a provider to make, which is why it is rarely made.

The third is the student whose difficulty is not academic. Sleep, screens, a friendship problem, the aftermath of a family move, or genuine anxiety about the Diploma's workload all present as falling grades, and no amount of subject teaching addresses any of them. A tutor who notices this should say so, and the right next conversation is with the school rather than a purchase. A fourth case is the student whose subject level is wrong, where the answer is a conversation with the coordinator about moving from Higher to Standard Level rather than two years of support propping up the wrong choice.

09

The line between teaching a coursework component and doing it

  • A tutor teaches content, explains criteria and reviews the student's own draft
  • Nothing is written for submission, at any price or any deadline
  • Official subject guides and mark schemes are linked to, never redistributed
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free of charge and valid for two years

Because so much of what a Marina family buys is supervision of independent work, the honesty boundary is not an abstract principle here. It is the day-to-day content of the service, and it is worth writing out so a parent can hold any provider to it.

A tutor can teach the subject content the component rests on. Explain how each published criterion is applied, and show what each band looks like in practice. Test whether a research question is answerable with the data or reading available, before the student commits months to it. Read a draft the student has produced and say where it does not yet meet the criteria. Rehearse an individual oral under time and review the recording. Build a schedule backwards from the school's deadline and hold the student to it.

A tutor cannot supply text for submission, turn a draft into a finished piece, or hand over material presented as the student's own. The work has to be the student's own under IB academic-honesty rules, and a breach puts the student's diploma at risk rather than the provider's reputation. One operator in this market sells completed internal assessments outright at a published price; for a family under deadline pressure in March, that is the most expensive thing available in this market and the risk sits entirely with the child.

Two related rules. Published syllabuses, subject guides, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, so the correct practice is to reference and link the official source rather than redistribute copies. And on the tutor's own standing: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tutor work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with those tutoring without one subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted at a family.

Where we tutor

The Marina and the communities it shares schools with

Households around Dubai Marina draw on the same cluster of schools as several neighbouring communities, which is why a tutoring recommendation travels badly between them: the same school can mean a different syllabus and a different year group.

JBR

A short walk south along the beachfront, with a similar tower profile and a similar school run. Households here turn over faster than in the Marina, so a Diploma student may be carrying internal assessment work across a change of school rather than just a change of flat.

JLT

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, with a cluster layout that puts households on different sides of the Metro and therefore on different bus timings. The same schools serve both, but a JLT pickup can leave a child home half an hour later than a Marina one.

Bluewaters Island

Connected to the Marina side by footbridge and road, with a small resident population feeding the same schools. The practical point for tutoring is bandwidth and quiet rather than distance: these are apartment households with the same study-space constraint.

Al Sufouh

Immediately inland, and home to several of the schools Marina children attend. For a family in a tower, the commute is short in distance and unpredictable in time, which is the usual reason a four o'clock session start fails twice and then gets moved.

The Greens and The Views

Low-rise apartment communities a few minutes along Sheikh Zayed Road, sharing the same school cluster. Households are often longer-established than in the Marina, which shows up as more settled subject choices and fewer mid-course school changes.

The Springs and The Meadows

Villa communities inland, with their own school cluster and more space for a study room. Marina families comparing notes with friends there are frequently comparing a tower study corner with a dedicated desk, which changes what an evening session can achieve.

Emirates Hills

Further along Al Khail Road, with a different commute pattern and a different school mix. The overlap matters because option blocks differ: a Higher Level combination available at one school in this wider cluster may not run at another.

Palm Jumeirah

Across the road from the Marina towers and served by an overlapping group of schools. The shared constraint is traffic timing on the exit routes, which is why Marina and Palm households tend to settle on the same later evening slots.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Marina

Schools Marina and JBR households commonly attend

Students at these schools are supported by IB Gram tutors. They are named as context about the cluster a Marina family chooses within, not as any relationship. Programmes and Higher Level option blocks change by year, so confirm what runs in your child's cohort with the school.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • American School of Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

Schools reached from the Marina along Al Khail Road

A second group a Marina household realistically commutes to. The relevance to tutoring is the afternoon: a longer or less predictable run pushes the earliest workable session later, and that is worth establishing before a weekly slot is agreed rather than after two cancellations.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Named schools are context about the cluster families choose within. No affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and every school name should be checked against KHDA's own published school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what is unsupervised, not what is weak

The most useful first message names the next fixed date: a supervisor meeting, an internal assessment deadline, a mock window. Add the school, the syllabus codes and the last report. That tells us whether this is a teaching job, a supervision job or a scheduling job, and the three cost very different amounts.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with a specialist in that subject

One lesson at no cost with a tutor who teaches that subject at that level, run as a working session rather than a sales call. The tutor teaches something and then reports what they found. If the match is wrong, say so and a different tutor is proposed before any payment.

  3. 03

Every internal deadline on one page

Before any weekly rhythm starts, the school's own dates go onto a single sheet in order, with the collisions marked. That one exercise prevents the specific failure this page is about: three components addressed in the same fortnight, all of them rushed, each costing marks that were available.

  4. 04

Protect one realistic hour, not an optimistic one

Sessions are set at a time the student is genuinely at a desk after the Marina school run and after sport, with the study space agreed in advance where siblings share a room. A slot that only works on a perfect week is cancelled twice and then quietly dropped.

  5. 05

Review at the end of the term and cut what is not needed

At term's end the tutor says plainly what has changed and what has not. Where a subject no longer needs weekly support, it stops, because the hour is worth more to the coursework. Where a different specialist is needed, that is said rather than absorbed into the existing arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The plan is built from your school's dates

Internal assessment and Extended Essay deadlines come from your child's school assessment calendar, not from a generic timeline. For a Diploma student those are the dates that bind, and they are earlier than most families expect. The first piece of work is usually getting them onto one page.

Online delivery means the specialist is not local

A Higher Level Chemistry teacher or a Theory of Knowledge essay supervisor does not have to be willing to drive into the Marina at five o'clock. Lessons run live online over video, so the match is made on subject, level and syllabus code. Home visits are offered only in India, and that is stated plainly rather than implied.

Recommendations to buy less, when that is right

A capable student with three colliding deadlines needs a schedule, not a weekly hour, and a student with four tutors usually needs fewer. Those recommendations are made here because the alternative is selling hours that crowd out the components carrying the points.

Figures carry their source and their currency

Every market rate on this page is in dirhams and attributed to the provider that published it. Nothing here is presented as a price list for this site. Where a number could not be verified it is left out: no IB exam date, no inspection rating invented for a school, and no fine amount.

The coursework boundary is written down

Teaching the content, explaining the criteria, testing a research question and reviewing the student's own draft are what is on offer. Text for submission is not, at any deadline. In a market where completed internal assessments are openly sold, that is a real distinction rather than a disclaimer.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Marina: your questions answered

My son's school in Al Sufouh teaches well. Why would he need a tutor at all?+

Frequently he would not, for teaching. The gap in a well-taught Diploma is the independent half: an internal assessment in each of six subjects, an Extended Essay with a 4,000-word limit, a Theory of Knowledge essay limited to 1,600 words and an exhibition, none of which is delivered in a taught period. If his grades are solid and his deadlines are unclear, the useful purchase is a planning session and a schedule rather than weekly lessons. If a specific subject has been slipping across a term, that is a different problem with a different answer.

How early should an Extended Essay actually be started?+

Earlier than the school's first hard deadline suggests, because the real constraint is reading rather than writing. A workable sequence is a subject and a rough area in the first term of DP1, a narrowed research question before the long summer, the bulk of the reading over that summer, and a full version well before the school's deadline rather than in the fortnight preceding it. The 4,000-word limit is not the difficulty; a question too broad to answer in 4,000 words is. Narrowing it early is the cheapest improvement available and costs nothing.

Do you send a home tutor to our apartment in Dubai Marina?+

No. Lessons for Marina families run online, one to one, over live video, and IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. In a tower household this usually works better: no travel priced into the hour, no building access to coordinate, a late slot available when the school run overruns, and a tutor matched on the exact syllabus code rather than on willingness to drive into the Marina at five o'clock on a weekday.

My daughter is in Year 10 and her mock result in a topic she understood last year was poor. What happened?+

Almost certainly forgetting rather than misunderstanding. A topic learned once and never retrieved decays, and nothing in an IGCSE timetable returns Year 10 material to a student before the Year 11 mock. The mock then reads as a collapse in ability when it is a spacing problem. The fix is spaced retrieval in a deliberate order rather than re-teaching the topic from the start, plus marked past papers for the exact syllabus code. Re-teaching content she already met is the expensive version of this, and it is the usual response.

Which tier has her school entered her for, and does it matter?+

It matters a great deal and the school is the only place to find out. In the Cambridge model many subjects split into Core and Extended, and Pearson into Foundation and Higher, with the lower tier capping the grade available regardless of performance. The decision sits on the entry form, which closes months before the papers: a Cambridge June candidate in Dubai has entries confirmed in the spring, well ahead of papers that run across May and June, and the Pearson November route closes earlier still against a timetable that ran to 19 November 2026. Ask the school in writing which tier each subject has been entered at and what grade it caps at, and ask before the entry window shuts rather than after.

How much do IB and IGCSE tutors in Dubai Marina charge?+

Market rates in dirhams run from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutors, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52; AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits including travel; and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB and IGCSE specialists, with TutorChase at AED 270 and premium named tutors at AED 650 as published by BartyED. Those are other providers' published figures, quoted so you have a reference before the first call.

Can one tutor supervise two internal assessments in different subjects?+

Sometimes, and it depends on how close the subjects are. The criteria differ by subject and so does the subject knowledge required to test whether a research question is viable, so a single tutor covering a science and a humanity is unlikely to be strong at both. Closely related pairs, such as two sciences at Standard Level or mathematics and physics, are more realistic. The scheduling part, getting every deadline onto one page and working backwards from each, can be done once for all six components by whoever does it first.

Our flat is small and both children study at the kitchen table. Does online tutoring work in that?+

It works if the space is agreed as a rota rather than improvised. The requirement is a corner the student can occupy for an hour without negotiation, headphones and a connection that holds. Households with two children in school commonly stagger sessions onto different evenings for this reason, which has the side benefit of spreading the cost across the week. What does not work is a session booked at an hour when the room is contested, because it gets cancelled twice and then dropped.

What is the Theory of Knowledge exhibition and does it need support?+

It asks the student to link three objects to a prescribed prompt and explain how each one shows knowledge in practice, and it is assessed alongside the 1,600-word essay. Most of the available mark is decided by object selection, which students rush because the component feels minor. One or two sessions on choosing objects that genuinely illustrate the prompt, and on writing commentary that analyses rather than describes, usually covers it. Beyond that, time is better spent on the subjects carrying the bulk of the points.

A neighbour recommended a tutor who was excellent for her son. Why might that not transfer?+

Because the Marina draws on more than one school cluster, running different programmes and different boards. A tutor who was excellent for a Pearson 4MA1 candidate in Year 11 may be a poor match for a Higher Level Analysis and Approaches student at a different school, and a strong IGCSE science tutor is not automatically a Diploma internal assessment supervisor. The two questions worth asking about any recommendation are which school and which syllabus code, since those determine whether the experience is relevant.

Can sessions move later during Ramadan and through the long summer?+

Yes, and both are worth planning rather than improvising. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the productive study window for most teenagers moves after iftar, so sessions shift later and are often better shorter and more frequent. The week before Ramadan is worth treating as a deadline for anything that would otherwise sit unfinished through it. The long summer between the Diploma years is the single most valuable block available, and it is when the Extended Essay reading and the Higher Level set texts should be done.

How many hours a week does a Diploma student actually need?+

For most Marina students, one or two in the single subject genuinely behind, plus bounded supervision on whichever coursework component is closest to its deadline. Four weekly tutors is almost always too many, because it removes the discretionary time the independent components require and those are where the points leak. The honest test is whether the hours are displacing the internal assessments or supporting them. Where they are displacing them, cutting two subjects usually raises the total.

What can a tutor legitimately do with my child's internal assessment?+

Teach the content it rests on, explain how each published criterion is applied and what each band looks like, test whether the research question can be answered with the available data, read a draft the student has written and say where it falls short, and build a schedule backwards from the school's deadline. What a tutor cannot do is supply text for submission or rework a draft into a finished piece. The work has to be the student's own, and a breach of IB academic-honesty rules puts the diploma at risk rather than the provider.

How quickly can a tutor start for a subject in the final term?+

Usually within a few days for mainstream subjects at Standard Level or IGCSE. Higher Level specialists in the term before a session are thinly supplied across the whole market, because that is when every family wants one, and where no suitable specialist is free that is said rather than filled with whoever is available. The sequence is a short conversation about dates and syllabus codes, a free trial lesson with a subject specialist, then a protected weekly slot. Nothing is charged before the trial has happened.

Do you cover both Cambridge and Pearson for the same subject?+

Yes, and the distinction matters more than families expect. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations with different paper structures, different tiering and different mark-scheme conventions, and the same is true across the sciences with 0625 against 4PH1. Past-paper work has to use the exact code the school enters, because practising the wrong one trains the wrong habits. The first question we ask is which code appears on your child's entry, not which subject they take.

My son is strong but says he has no time. Is that a scheduling problem or an excuse?+

Usually a scheduling problem, and it is testable. Write down for each weekday the hour he is genuinely at a desk with the door shut, rather than the hour he is home. In most Marina households that is later than parents assume and on two evenings it does not exist. If the honest total is six or seven hours a week against six internal assessments and an Extended Essay, the constraint is real and the answer is to cut something rather than add a tutor. That conversation is more useful than a lesson.

Start with the deadlines, then decide what to buy

Around Dubai Marina the teaching is rarely the problem. The problem is the half of the course nobody supervises: six internal assessments, an Extended Essay with a 4,000-word limit, a Theory of Knowledge essay limited to 1,600 words, and two years of IGCSE content that no timetable returns to a student before the mock. Send the school, the syllabus codes and the next fixed date, take a free trial lesson with a specialist in whichever subject worries you most, and ask for every deadline on one page. Lessons run online, one to one, timed to your school run. If the answer is a schedule rather than a tutor, that is what you will be told.
