IB DP Internal Assessment Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Internal Assessment tutor in Dubai is rarely needed for one subject alone. A Diploma student in Dubai is carrying six internal assessments with six different weightings, six sets of criteria and six school-set deadlines that tend to land in the same eight weeks. Some carry 20 per cent of a subject grade and some carry 30. IB Gram matches by subject, coaches one-to-one over live video, and schedules around the Dubai school day in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Matched by subject, because every IA has its own criteria

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Six internal assessments, six sets of criteria, one eight-week window

Internal assessment is not a single task. It is the collective name for the component in each Diploma subject that the school marks and the IB moderates, and every subject's version is different. In the sciences it is a scientific investigation. In mathematics it is an exploration. In history it is a historical investigation with three defined sections. In economics it is a portfolio of three commentaries. In Language A it is an individual oral. The weight differs too: around 20 per cent of the final grade in several subjects, 25 in others, and 30 in some at Standard Level.

That variation is why a parent searching for an internal assessment tutor in Dubai usually needs more than one answer. A student struggling with the Biology investigation has a research-design problem. The same student struggling with the Maths exploration has a personal-engagement and mathematical-communication problem, measured against completely different criteria with a different mark total. Advice that transfers between the two is thin, and a generalist essay tutor cannot supply either.

The second structural feature is moderation. The school marks the IA and submits a sample to the IB, which moderates those marks and can adjust the whole cohort's marks up or down. A student can therefore receive a mark from their teacher that is not the mark that appears on the final certificate. Families in Dubai meet this for the first time in July, usually with no explanation available, and the scenario is common enough that it deserves a section rather than a footnote.

The third is scheduling. Internal deadlines for IAs are set by the school, not by the IB, and Dubai schools tend to cluster them. A DP2 student can face a Chemistry investigation, a Maths exploration, an Economics commentary and the Extended Essay final submission inside six weeks, in the same term as university applications. No single deadline is unreasonable; the stack is. Most of the value in IA coaching is deciding which of the six to get out of the way early, and which can safely be left until the others are banked.

IB Gram matches your child with a subject specialist who works one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day. The first conversation is usually triage: which IAs are due when, what each is worth, and which one is closest to losing marks that cannot be recovered. Tuition for UAE families is delivered online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. A free trial lesson comes first, one per family, with no card details taken, and the student does the designing, the collecting and the writing throughout.

At a glance

  • Every Diploma subject has its own IA, criteria, mark total and length limit
  • IA weight runs from around 20 per cent to 30 per cent of a subject grade
  • The school marks the IA; the IB moderates and can adjust the cohort's marks
  • Internal deadlines are set by the school, which is why they cluster
  • The group 4 scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria
  • A tutor questions, marks and teaches cutting; the student produces the work
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Internally assessed work appears long before the Diploma, and how a student handled the earlier version usually predicts the IA. These are the stages we cover and what the internal component looks like at each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Each of the six subjects carries an internally assessed component worth roughly a fifth to a third of the subject grade. The school marks it against published criteria and the IB moderates. Deadlines are set internally, which is why two students in the same city can face completely different IA calendars depending on which school they attend.

Dubai schools differ sharply in how early they set IA deadlines. Some require a Chemistry investigation before the DP1 summer; others run everything in DP2 term one. Ask for your child's full internal deadline list in writing at the start of DP2 — it is the single document that makes the year plannable.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP assessment is entirely criterion-based, with four criteria per subject and no external paper in most schools. Students who learned to read a criterion strand and write to it have a large head start on IA work. Those who treated criteria as administrative detail arrive in the Diploma writing fluent work that does not address the strands.

Dubai has substantial IB continuum provision, so a DP1 class often mixes students with five years of criterion-based marking and students who have never seen it. The second group needs the criteria taught explicitly before their first IA draft, not after it comes back.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and the pre-Diploma route

Most IGCSE subjects assess practical skills through a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than through extended coursework. Students arriving from that route into the Diploma have strong examination technique and limited experience of designing an investigation of their own, which is the first gap a science IA exposes.

British-curriculum schools dominate Dubai enrolment, so the IGCSE-to-Diploma transfer is the most common path into IB here. For these students the first science IA is usually the hardest single piece of work in DP1, and the problem is design rather than content knowledge.

DP-COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IAs alongside the Extended Essay, TOK and CAS

Six internal assessments do not arrive alone. They share a calendar with a 4,000-word Extended Essay, two TOK tasks and a CAS portfolio that must be completed for the Diploma to be awarded. The core components have their own deadlines, and the school sets those too, which is how a six-week pile-up forms.

In Dubai the heaviest stacking typically falls between November and February of DP2, overlapping university application deadlines. Families who sequence deliberately — hardest IA first, lowest-weight IA last — lose fewer marks than families who respond to whichever deadline is nearest.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An IA is subject-specific down to the mark scheme, so these entries describe what the internal component actually is in each subject and what it tends to cost students in Dubai.

Biology

HL and SL

The scientific investigation, worth around a fifth of the subject grade and marked across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Most marks are lost in design: an uncontrolled variable, a single trial, or a question the available equipment cannot actually answer. Fixing the design before data collection is the only cheap intervention.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same investigation structure as Biology, with the added constraint of what a school laboratory can safely run. Strong chemistry IAs usually have simple apparatus and a clear quantitative relationship. Weak ones attempt an ambitious synthesis and produce data too noisy to analyse, which costs marks under both data analysis and conclusion.

Physics

HL and SL

Rewards precision about uncertainty more than any other group 4 subject. A good physics investigation states its uncertainties, propagates them, and discusses what they mean for the conclusion. Students who present a graph with no error treatment lose marks they could have secured with an hour of work.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The exploration, marked out of twenty across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. The common failure is mathematics at the wrong level — either below the course or copied from a source the student cannot explain. Personal engagement cannot be added afterwards.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The same exploration criteria applied to modelling and data. Students here often have genuinely interesting datasets and treat them descriptively, which collects presentation marks and little else. The work is making the mathematics do something the student can justify.

Economics

HL and SL

A portfolio of three commentaries on published news articles, each within a tight word limit, each marked against the same criteria including diagrams, terminology, application, analysis and evaluation. The usual loss is a summary of the article rather than an application of theory to it, plus diagrams that are drawn but never explained.

History

HL and SL

The historical investigation, in three sections with defined mark allocations, inside a word limit near 2,200 words. Section one evaluates two sources and is where most avoidable marks sit. Students over-write section two and leave the reflection thin, which is the reverse of where the marks are easiest to collect.

Psychology

HL and SL

An experimental study based on a published study, with ethical constraints that shape what is possible. Marks are lost in the introduction, where the link between the chosen study and the student's own hypothesis has to be explicit, and in evaluation, where students describe limitations rather than assess their effect on the findings.

Geography

HL and SL

A fieldwork investigation with a written report inside a word limit. Dubai offers unusually good fieldwork material — urban growth, coastal change, microclimates, transport use — and the constraint is usually the quality of data collection rather than the topic. Secondary data needs the same critical treatment as primary.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The individual oral, internally assessed and worth more at Standard Level than at Higher. Marked across knowledge and interpretation, analysis and evaluation, focus and organisation, and language. Students prepare content and neglect timing, then run out of time before the second text gets its analysis.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

The exhibition is internally assessed and moderated, with the curatorial rationale and the selection of works both assessed. Students treat the rationale as a label rather than as an argument about the work's coherence, which is where marks are lost even by strong practical artists.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IA support is bought at specific moments in the life of a piece of coursework. These are the four shapes Dubai families use, and the right one depends on whether data has already been collected.

Design session, before any data exists

One or two sessions at the point where the student has a topic and nothing else. The tutor tests whether the question can be answered with the equipment, data or sources available, checks the controlled variables or the method, and makes sure enough trials or sources are planned to allow real analysis later.

  • Question tested against the school's actual equipment or data access
  • Variables and controls specified before collection starts
  • Enough repeats or sources planned to allow analysis
  • Safety and ethics checked against what the school permits

Analysis clinic, data collected

For the student who has results and does not know what to do with them. Sessions cover processing, uncertainty, graph choice, statistical treatment the student can explain, and the gap between a result and a conclusion. This is where the largest criteria in most science and maths IAs are won or lost.

  • Raw data processed with the reasoning explained, not just the steps
  • Uncertainty treated properly rather than mentioned
  • Graph and test choices justified against the research question
  • Conclusion written to follow from the evidence actually obtained

Criteria-marked draft review

One or two sessions for a complete draft. The tutor marks it against the subject's own criteria, names the marks, and identifies the two changes that would move the most. Useful before a school deadline, and especially useful when the draft is being read by the same teacher who will mark the final version.

  • Marks named per criterion, with the strand quoted
  • Length limit and formatting checked against the subject requirements
  • Two priority changes rather than a line-by-line rewrite
  • No replacement text supplied at any stage

Multi-subject triage

A single session for a student facing three or four IA deadlines in six weeks. We map every internal deadline, the weight each component carries, and how far each draft is from the criteria, then set an order of attack. Triage is usually worth more than an extra month of content teaching.

  • Every internal deadline and weighting on one page
  • Order set by marks at risk, not by which date is nearest
  • Realistic assessment of what cannot be rescued
  • A written plan the student can work from alone

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB internal assessment actually is, subject by subject

An internal assessment is the component of a Diploma subject that the school marks and the IB moderates. The phrase hides enormous variation. The group 4 sciences share one model — a scientific investigation marked across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — while mathematics uses an exploration marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. History uses a three-section investigation. Economics uses a portfolio of three commentaries on news articles. Language A and Language B both use an individual oral.

The practical consequence is that there is no such thing as general IA advice. A student told to improve their evaluation has been given actionable guidance in Chemistry, where evaluation is a named criterion worth a quarter of the marks, and vague guidance in mathematics, where the equivalent criterion is reflection and is worth three marks out of twenty. Matching a tutor to the subject, rather than to coursework in general, is the whole of the quality question here.

Weight varies as well, and it varies between levels inside the same subject. Several subjects place internal assessment at around a fifth of the final grade at both levels. Others weight it more heavily at Standard Level than at Higher, because the Higher Level course adds an external component that takes a share. Economics and History both follow that pattern, as does Language A. A student at Standard Level is therefore often risking more of their grade in the internally assessed component than their Higher Level classmate in the same subject.

Because those figures are revised when subject guides are revised, treat the table below as a map rather than as an authority, and confirm each number against the current guide for your child's session through the school's IB coordinator. What does not change is the shape of the problem: six components, six mark schemes, six internal deadlines, and one student.

The criteria letters and the marks behind them

Research for this page found that no competitor page in the UAE tutoring market names a single IA criterion with its mark allocation. That is the clearest information gap in the cluster, because the criteria are exactly what a student needs in order to know what to do next. A criterion is not a topic; it is a strand with a mark range and a descriptor, and work is placed in a band by whether it matches the descriptor rather than by how much effort it shows.

In the group 4 sciences the scientific investigation is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Half the marks therefore sit in what the student does after the data exists, which is the opposite of how most students allocate their time. A beautifully conducted experiment written up with a conclusion that restates the result and an evaluation that lists generic limitations is collecting from two criteria and leaving two untouched.

The mathematics exploration is marked out of twenty across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest share, and personal engagement is the one that cannot be retrofitted — it is visible in whether the student chose something they have a reason to care about and did something of their own with it. The historical investigation is marked across three sections with the investigation itself carrying the largest block and the reflection carrying the smallest, which is where students misallocate words.

Reading the criteria with the student in front of their own draft is the most useful hour in IA support. Most students have never read the descriptors for the band above the one they are in, and once they do, the next revision is obvious rather than arbitrary.

Length limits, and why going over them costs more than going under

Every IA has a limit and the limits are not advisory. The group 4 scientific investigation runs to around 3,000 words. The historical investigation sits near 2,200. An Economics commentary is capped at a few hundred words each, which is the tightest constraint in the Diploma and the reason Economics IAs reward ruthless cutting. The mathematics exploration is governed by a recommended page range rather than a word count. The individual orals are governed by minutes, not words.

Exceeding a limit does not add information; it removes it, because material beyond the limit need not be credited. The predictable casualty is the end of the document, which in almost every IA is where the evaluation or conclusion lives — and in the sciences that is half the mark scheme. Students who discover the problem late tend to move content into appendices, which does not help: an examiner is not obliged to read an appendix, so analysis parked there is marked as absent.

Coming in short is the lesser error but still costs. A scientific investigation at 1,400 words has usually skipped the evaluation of method and the discussion of uncertainty, which are named criteria. An Economics commentary that is short has usually described the article instead of applying theory to it. The right length is the length at which every criterion has been addressed with evidence, which is why planning against the criteria rather than against the word count produces the right number by accident.

There is also a formatting dimension worth ten minutes before submission: a clear title, the research question stated, labelled tables and figures referred to in the text, a consistent citation style, and raw data placed where the criteria expect it. None of that is difficult and all of it is routinely lost.

Moderation: why the mark your teacher gives is not always the mark that arrives

  • The school marks; the IB moderates and can adjust the cohort's marks
  • A teacher's mark is a prediction against the criteria, not a banked result
  • Write for a moderator who knows nothing about the school or the dataset
  • Carry-forward rules for retakes exist but are specific — ask the coordinator

Internal assessment is marked by the school and moderated by the IB. The school submits a sample of marked work along with its marks, and the IB checks whether the school has applied the criteria as the IB applies them. If a school has marked generously, the cohort's marks can be adjusted down; if it has marked severely, they can be adjusted up. The adjustment applies at cohort level rather than being negotiated student by student.

This is the mechanism behind one of the more upsetting conversations a Dubai parent can have in July: a Chemistry IA that came back from the teacher with a strong mark, and a final subject grade that does not reflect it. Nobody has made an error. The school's marks were moderated, and the student's own mark moved with the cohort's. Understanding this in DP1 changes how a family reads internal feedback — a teacher's mark is an informed prediction against the criteria, not a banked result.

The practical defence is to write work that would survive a moderator who has never met the student. Moderators see the document and the criteria and nothing else: no knowledge of the school, the laboratory, the dataset's provenance or the effort behind it. Anything the student assumed the reader would know has to be on the page. This is also why a marked draft from someone outside the school is useful — an outside reader notices the assumptions a teacher fills in automatically.

One further point for students repeating a session. Schools can usually carry forward internally assessed marks for a candidate retaking examinations within the permitted period rather than requiring the coursework again, but the rules and the window are specific. Ask the IB coordinator before assuming either way, because the answer changes what a retake year looks like.

05

The DP2 pile-up, and how to sequence six internal deadlines

Internal assessment deadlines are set by the school, which is the single most important fact about them. The IB sets the dates by which the school must submit marks and samples; the school decides when your child's draft and final version are due, and schools work backwards from the submission date with their own margin. Two Dubai students in neighbouring communities can therefore face completely different calendars for identical subjects.

What they have in common is clustering. Because every department works back from the same submission window, the deadlines converge, usually in the middle of DP2 and frequently in the same weeks as the Extended Essay final submission and university applications. Add Ramadan's shortened school days in some years and the practical working time inside that window shrinks further. No single deadline in the list is unreasonable; the list is.

Sequencing is therefore the highest-value hour of IA support available, and it is almost never bought. The order should be set by marks at risk rather than by which date is nearest: a Standard Level Economics portfolio worth around 30 per cent of that subject's grade outranks a Higher Level component worth 20 per cent of another, and a science investigation with no data collected yet outranks a draft that only needs tightening, because data collection cannot be compressed.

Ask for the full internal deadline list in writing in the first fortnight of DP2, put every date on one calendar with the component's weight beside it, and work out where the collisions are while there is still room to move. Every IA emergency we are called into was visible on that calendar months earlier.

The line a tutor must not cross on an internal assessment

  • The coordinator authenticates every IA as the student's own work
  • A tutor may design-check, teach analysis, mark against criteria and teach cutting
  • A tutor may not supply text, run the analysis, or produce the data
  • Guides, past papers and mark schemes come from the school, not from a tutor

Every IA is submitted as the student's own work under the IB's academic honesty rules, and the school's coordinator authenticates it. A submission containing material the student did not produce is a malpractice matter, and the consequences land on the student — up to the loss of the Diploma — rather than on whoever supplied the material. In this market the warning is specific rather than abstract: research for these pages found a site ranking for UAE IB searches that sells finished coursework outright, priced per piece.

The legitimate scope of support is wide enough that nobody needs to cross the line. A tutor may test whether a research question is answerable with the available equipment. They may insist on controlled variables before data collection. They may teach a statistical treatment and make the student explain it back. They may mark a draft against the criteria, name the marks, quote the descriptor for the band above, and refuse to accept a conclusion the data does not support. They may teach a student to cut 400 words without losing a criterion.

What a tutor may not do is supply any part of the submitted document, rewrite a section to completion, carry out the analysis on the student's behalf, or produce the data. Our tutors return drafts with questions, annotations and criterion judgements rather than with replacement text. The test is whether the student can explain every change and why it earns marks; if they cannot, the work has stopped being theirs.

Tell your child's teacher that a tutor is involved. There is nothing to conceal in criteria-based coaching, and a teacher who knows will usually be clearer about which criterion the draft is weakest on. We also do not distribute IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes, which are the IB's copyright — the current guide comes from the school's coordinator.

What internal assessment support costs in Dubai

IA support prices as subject-specialist work, because the useful version requires someone who knows the criteria for that subject and has seen how students lose marks against them. The published Dubai market gives the range: EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour, Tutopiya from AED 33-52, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, TutorChase shows AED 270, Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 or above and in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Each of those is that provider's own published figure.

IB Gram does not publish a rate card on these pages. The model is a free trial lesson first, one per family and no card details taken, then the specific tutor's rate confirmed in writing before any paid session. For IA work the sensible purchase is small and timed: one or two sessions at the design stage, one analysis clinic once data exists, one criteria-marked read before the school deadline. A standing weekly slot across DP2 is rarely the right shape for coursework that has a fixed end point.

Three factors move the number. Stage is the first and largest: a design session before collection is ordinary subject tutoring, while a marked draft returned in 48 hours before a deadline is specialist work with a scheduling cost. Subject scarcity is the second — Psychology and Geography specialists are harder to find at Diploma level than Biology or Economics. The third is multiplicity: a student needing three subjects' IAs read in one fortnight is buying three specialists, not one tutor.

For context on the overall spend, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package. Against a Diploma-year fee, two or three well-timed IA sessions are a small line. The expensive pattern is unplanned hours bought in the last fortnight across three subjects at once.

Online one-to-one against an in-home IA tutor in Dubai

Parents in Dubai search for a home tutor, so the comparison belongs here in full. An in-home tutor costs more per hour because travel sits inside the rate: published bands put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 for a qualified online hour. Travel also fixes the timetable, and IA work does not respect timetables. A draft arrives on a Thursday night, a deadline moves, a dataset turns out to be unusable. Any of those needs a session within two days, which is the thing an in-home arrangement cannot do.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video, and in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. We say that on every UAE page because two providers in this market route UAE parents to numbers in another country without disclosing where the tutor sits.

For internal assessment the online format has a concrete advantage: the work is a document and a dataset, and both live on a shared screen. A spreadsheet of results is manipulated together, with the student driving. Uncertainty calculations are worked live. A draft is annotated against the criteria with the descriptor visible beside it. Every marked version is kept, so the progress from draft one to draft three is evidence rather than recollection — which also matters if a school later asks how the work developed.

The decisive factor is subject matching. A Dubai family needing a Psychology IA read against its criteria needs a Psychology specialist, not whoever teaches sciences and lives nearby. Online, availability becomes a question of Gulf Standard Time rather than driving distance, and a student can see a different specialist for each of three subjects in the same week.

Where we tutor

Where IA requests come from across Dubai, and which subject

IA enquiries cluster by school rather than by district, and the subject differs with the cohort. These notes describe the pattern we see in each part of the city.

Oud Metha, Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

Large senior cohorts with strong science uptake, so most requests here are group 4 investigations. Laboratory access in these schools is usually good, which moves the problem to research design: a question narrow enough for one controlled variable and enough trials to analyse.

Emirates Living, The Greens and The Views

Established Diploma families, often with both Maths AA and a science IA running at once. The useful first session here is triage rather than teaching: deciding which of the two is closer to losing marks that cannot be recovered later.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Villa communities feeding British-curriculum schools that run the Diploma at sixth form. Students arrive from IGCSE with good examination technique and no experience of designing an investigation, so the first science IA is the hardest piece of work in DP1.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City and Meydan

Newer schools with cohorts still in their first Diploma cycles, where internal deadlines are sometimes set late and then compressed. Requests from this area tend to arrive with two weeks left, and the honest answer is about protecting the criteria that can still move.

Al Nahda, Al Twar and Al Qusais

Dense school provision on the north side with long evening commutes across the city. Sessions here are scheduled online by preference at 7pm or later, and a fortnightly rhythm during data collection works better than weekly.

Dubai Production City and Arjan

Mixed curricula with smaller Diploma cohorts, which means a subject teacher may be the only specialist in the school. Students benefit most from a marked draft by someone other than the person who will also mark the final submission.

Tilal Al Ghaf and Dubailand

Fast-growing family areas with new schools and geographically scattered cohorts. Geography and Economics IAs are common here, and local data — community growth, transport, retail footfall — is genuinely available if the collection method is planned.

Al Safa, Al Wasl and Za'abeel

Long-established schools near the centre with experienced IA teaching, so requests are late-stage and precise: one marked draft against the criteria before a school deadline, usually in Economics or History.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Oud Metha, Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

Established provision close to the centre, with science-heavy Diploma cohorts. Group 4 investigations are the most common IA request from this cluster, and laboratory access is rarely the limiting factor.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Our Own English High School

Emirates Living, Jumeirah Park and The Greens

Villa and townhouse communities feeding both IB and British-curriculum sixth forms. Students transferring from IGCSE into the Diploma make up a large share of IA enquiries here.

  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Regent International School

Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Newer Diploma cohorts where internal assessment calendars are still settling. Students here benefit from asking for the full internal deadline list in writing at the start of DP2.

  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Kent College Dubai

Schools are named to describe the Dubai Diploma market this page serves; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

List every IA and its deadline

The first useful message is a list: subject, level, what the component is, the school's internal deadline, and how far the draft has got. Six lines of that tells us which specialists to shortlist and in what order. If you do not have the deadlines, ask the coordinator for them in writing — most Dubai schools will send the full list on request.

  2. 02

Send the draft, the data or the design

Whatever exists: a method outline, a spreadsheet of raw results, two paragraphs of an introduction. For a science IA the design and the data matter more than the prose. For an Economics portfolio, send the articles chosen. A specialist can usually judge in one reading whether the problem is design, analysis or expression.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, with the weakest criterion named

One free trial lesson per family, no card details taken. The tutor marks what exists against the subject's criteria and names which one is costing the most. For a student at the design stage, the tutor says plainly whether the planned method can produce analysable data. You finish with a position rather than an impression.

  4. 04

Agree the sessions, the rate and the turnaround

Before any paid session we confirm in writing how many sessions, the tutor's rate, the slot in Gulf Standard Time, and how quickly a draft comes back marked. Turnaround is the detail that matters in the fortnight before an internal deadline and the one most often left vague elsewhere.

  5. 05

Work in the student's own document

Sessions happen in the student's file on a shared screen, with the criteria open beside it. The student makes every edit while the tutor questions. Each session ends with two or three specific changes and the reason each one earns marks. You get a short written note afterwards, not a dashboard.

  6. 06

Stop when the component is submitted

Once the IA is in, that block ends. If another subject's deadline is next, we schedule against that date and, where the subject differs, with a different specialist. Carrying on weekly after submission would be billing for a component that cannot change.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One specialist per subject, in the same week

A Chemistry investigation and a History investigation are marked against different criteria, so we match per subject rather than sending one tutor for all coursework. Online delivery is what makes three specialists in one fortnight practical for a Dubai family.

Marks named, criterion by criterion

Feedback says which criterion is leaking and what the descriptor for the band above actually requires. Most students have never read that descriptor, and reading it with their own draft open is the hour that changes the next revision.

Design checked before data is collected

The cheapest marks in any science or geography IA are in the method, and they are unrecoverable once collection is finished. One session before the student starts is worth more than three after, which is also why we say no to design work that has already been overtaken.

Written for a moderator, not for the teacher

The IB moderates school marks, and a moderator sees the document and the criteria with no knowledge of the school or the dataset. An outside reader notices the assumptions a familiar teacher fills in without realising.

The student produces the work

Our tutors question, mark and teach cutting. They do not supply text, run the analysis or produce the data. In a market where a ranking site sells finished coursework by the piece, that boundary is the first thing to check about anyone you hire.

Market rates quoted with their source

Every AED figure on this page is another provider's published rate, attributed with provider and date. Three of the six competitor pages examined for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars that UAE families do not transact in.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is an IB internal assessment and how much of the subject grade does it carry?+

It is the component of each Diploma subject that the school marks and the IB moderates, and its form depends entirely on the subject: a scientific investigation in the group 4 sciences, an exploration in mathematics, a three-section investigation in History, a portfolio of commentaries in Economics, an individual oral in the language subjects. The weight runs from around a fifth to around a third of the final grade for that subject, and in several subjects it is heavier at Standard Level than at Higher Level because the Higher course adds an external component. Confirm the exact figure for your child's subject with the IB coordinator.

Is the IA worth the same in every Diploma subject?+

No, and the differences matter when deciding where to spend time. Several subjects place internal assessment at about 20 per cent of the final grade at both levels. Others weight it more heavily at Standard Level — Economics, History, Psychology, Geography and Language A all follow that pattern, with Standard Level figures commonly in the 25 to 30 per cent range. The practical consequence is that a Standard Level student can have more of a subject grade riding on coursework than a Higher Level classmate in the same room. Those weightings are revised when subject guides are revised, so check the current guide.

How is a science IA marked and what are the criteria?+

The group 4 scientific investigation is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Half the available marks therefore sit in what happens after the data exists, which is the reverse of how most students allocate effort. A carefully run experiment with a conclusion that restates the result and an evaluation listing generic limitations is collecting from two criteria and leaving two empty. Reading the descriptor for the band above the current one, with the draft open, is the fastest route to the next few marks.

How long should a mathematics exploration be?+

The exploration is governed by a recommended page range rather than a word count, and length is rarely the real problem. It is marked out of twenty across presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, and the two criteria students lose most often are personal engagement and use of mathematics. Engagement cannot be retrofitted: it shows in whether the student chose something they have a genuine reason to explore and did something of their own with it. Mathematics copied from a source the student cannot explain fails on communication as well as on engagement.

Can a tutor help with an IA without breaking IB academic honesty rules?+

Yes, and the legitimate scope is wide. A tutor may test whether a research question can be answered with the available equipment, insist on controlled variables before collection, teach a statistical method and make the student explain it back, mark a draft against the criteria and name the marks, and teach a student to cut 400 words without losing a criterion. What no tutor may do is supply any part of the submitted document, rewrite a section to completion, run the analysis, or produce the data. The test: your child should be able to explain every change and why it earns marks.

What is moderation and can it lower my child's IA mark?+

The school marks internal assessment and submits a sample to the IB, which checks whether the school applied the criteria as the IB does. If a school has marked generously the cohort's marks can be adjusted down, and if it has marked severely they can be adjusted up. The adjustment is applied at cohort level, not negotiated individually. This is why a strong mark from a teacher is an informed prediction rather than a banked result, and why work should be written for a moderator who knows nothing about the school, the laboratory or where the dataset came from.

My child's IA deadline is in two weeks. What can realistically still change?+

More than you would think, and less than the student hopes. With a fortnight left, new data collection is usually off the table, so the gains sit in the criteria that depend on writing: evaluation, conclusion, reflection, and the formatting and length requirements. In a science investigation those are worth a substantial share of the marks. The first session should be triage — what exists, which criterion is weakest, and what to abandon. What nobody should promise is that two weeks can repair a flawed research design, because it cannot.

How many words is the History internal assessment?+

The historical investigation sits near 2,200 words and is structured in three sections: an identification and evaluation of sources, the investigation itself, and a reflection. Marks are distributed unevenly across those sections, with the investigation carrying the largest block, and the common error is to over-write the investigation and leave the source evaluation and reflection thin. Material beyond the limit need not be credited, and because the reflection usually sits last, it is the part that gets cut by accident. Plan the word allocation against the mark allocation before drafting, and confirm the current limit with the subject guide.

Which internal assessments do Dubai Diploma students find hardest?+

Two stand out in our enquiries. The first science investigation in DP1 is the hardest for students arriving from IGCSE, because the IGCSE route assesses practical skills through a written paper and gives little experience of designing an investigation from scratch. The second is the mathematics exploration, where students who are strong at examination questions struggle with an open task that asks them to choose something and justify it. Both are design problems rather than knowledge problems, which is why they respond to one session before the work starts far better than to three sessions afterwards.

If my child retakes a session, do they have to redo the internal assessment?+

Often not. Schools can usually carry forward internally assessed marks for a candidate retaking examinations within a permitted period, rather than requiring the coursework to be produced again, but the rules and the window are specific and they are the school's to apply. Ask the IB coordinator directly before planning a retake year, because the answer changes everything about how those months are spent: a student carrying forward coursework marks can focus entirely on the external papers, while a student who must submit new coursework is effectively repeating the course.

How much does IA support cost per hour in Dubai?+

Published market rates give the range rather than a single figure. EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget online end; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase shows AED 270; Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 or above; BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Those are their figures with their dates. IA work prices at the specialist end because criteria-based marking is specialist work, and fast turnaround before a deadline costs more than a session booked a month ahead.

Can one tutor cover internal assessments in two different subjects?+

Sometimes, and it is usually the wrong question to optimise for. Two subjects' IAs are marked against different criteria with different mark totals, so what matters is whether the tutor knows both mark schemes rather than whether they are comfortable with both topics. Where a genuine overlap exists — Biology and Chemistry investigations share a structure, Maths AA and AI share the exploration criteria — one specialist can cover both well. Across a science and a humanities subject we would rather match two specialists, which online delivery makes practical inside the same week.

Does the school mark the IA or does the IB?+

The school marks it and the IB moderates. That is different from the external components, which an IB examiner marks without the school's involvement, and it changes how a student should approach the work. Because the first reader is the subject teacher, the school's own guidance and internal deadlines carry real weight. Because the second reader is a moderator with no context, nothing can be assumed on the page. Writing for both at once — following the school's requirements while explaining everything a stranger would need — is the practical skill the component rewards.

How many sessions does an internal assessment usually take?+

Fewer than families expect, if they are bought at the right moments. A typical pattern is one design session before data collection, one analysis clinic once results exist, and one criteria-marked read before the school's deadline: three sessions across two or three months. A student who already has a complete draft and needs it placed against the criteria usually needs one. Where more is genuinely useful is a student carrying three or four IA deadlines at once, and even then the extra hour is best spent on sequencing rather than on content.

What should my child bring to a first internal assessment session?+

The subject's criteria if the school has issued them, the internal deadline, and whatever work exists — a method outline, a spreadsheet of raw data, two paragraphs of a draft, or the three articles chosen for an Economics portfolio. For a science IA, the design and the data matter far more than the prose. It also helps to know what the school's laboratory can actually provide and whether technician time is available, because that constrains what method is realistic more than anything the student decides.

Send the list of deadlines first

The most useful thing you can send is six lines: subject, level, what the component is, the school's internal deadline, and how far each draft has got. From that we can say which specialists to shortlist and in what order, and which deadline is closest to costing marks that cannot be recovered. The trial lesson is free, one per family, with no card details taken, and it ends with the weakest criterion named rather than a general impression. Sessions are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and your child designs, collects and writes the work themselves.
