IGCSE to IB Transition Course in Dubai

An IGCSE to IB transition course in Dubai is worth buying only if it produces evidence, because the gap between the two is not content. It is four new assessed components, a jump in subject depth at Higher Level, and criterion marking instead of a mark scheme. This page sets out the gap subject by subject and the weekly record a bridge block should leave behind. Sessions run online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Four components an IGCSE student has never met, named and dated
  • Criterion marking explained against the mark scheme they know
  • Every session leaves a marked artefact with a date
  • Higher Level choices tested against a real Diploma-level task

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The gap is not the content

Students arriving in the first Diploma year from IGCSE are rarely short of knowledge. They have sat externally marked written papers, they know how to revise, and in the sciences and mathematics they have covered a good deal of what the Diploma assumes. What they have not met is the shape of the qualification. Six subjects rather than nine. Three of them at a level with sixty per cent more published teaching hours. An internally assessed piece of work in every subject. A four thousand word independent essay. A course about knowledge itself. And a service and activity requirement with written reflections.

That list is the transition, and none of it is on an IGCSE specification. A student who scored well across nine IGCSEs by learning content and practising mark schemes meets, in the first term of the Diploma, a set of tasks that reward independence, planning and written judgement. The grades usually dip. Families interpret the dip as the student struggling with harder content, and spend money on content, and the dip persists because the content was never the problem.

A bridge block that works is built around the four new demands and one subject bridged hard, usually mathematics or a Higher Level science. It is short, six weeks is typical, and it should be bought for what it leaves behind rather than for reassurance. By the end there should be a marked task at genuine Diploma difficulty in the bridged subject, a draft research question for the Extended Essay, one criterion-marked piece of work so the student has seen criterion marking applied to their own writing, and a written note of the school's internal deadlines for the year.

That last item sounds administrative and is the single most valuable output. Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge deadlines are set by the school and fall long before the written papers, and families who do not have them written down discover them one at a time as crises. Asking for them in the first fortnight costs nothing and restructures the whole year.

The second thing a bridge block should test is the Higher Level choice. Levels are selected before any Diploma content has been taught, on IGCSE evidence that does not map cleanly onto Higher Level demand. A marked task at the real level, early in the first term, is the evidence a school will weigh if a change is needed, and schools run their own deadlines for level changes which pass quietly. A student who waits for the end-of-year internal examinations has usually waited too long.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service. For a transition block the online format has a specific advantage: comments on a first Internal Assessment draft are typed into the student's own document and stay there, which is both better feedback and a visible record of what support was given if the school asks.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

This move spans three points in a student's school career, and the useful work differs at each. These are the stages a Dubai family is buying for.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

The IGCSE examination year, before the move

The cheapest point to prepare for the Diploma, and almost nobody uses it. Two things transfer directly: the habit of writing method and reasoning out in full, and an early look at what criterion marking means. Both are built in a handful of sessions and both pay across two years.

Dubai schools confirm Diploma subject and level choices during Year 11, frequently before IGCSE results arrive. A marked task at Diploma difficulty in the candidate Higher Level subjects is better evidence for that choice than an IGCSE predicted grade.

The summerAges 16

Between the two qualifications

A short, narrow block works here and a content course does not. The useful content is the mathematical or scientific technique the Diploma assumes, plus one honest introduction to what an Internal Assessment is. Reading ahead through a Diploma textbook is usually wasted effort at this stage.

Dubai's long summer break and the number of families travelling make a fixed slot harder to hold than during term. Four sessions spread across the break, with work set between them, holds better than an intensive week that nobody completes.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

The first Diploma year

Where the transition actually happens and where the dip appears. The first Internal Assessment, the first criterion-marked essay and the Extended Essay question all land in this year, alongside the school's level-change deadline. Support placed here changes submitted marks rather than revision feelings.

Dubai schools run internal examinations towards the end of the first Diploma year, and those results are the first honest measurement. By then the level-change window has usually closed, which is why a marked task in the first term matters more than it sounds.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, each subject is described by what the Diploma adds to what an IGCSE student already holds, which is the only comparison that helps when planning a bridge block.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Builds directly on IGCSE Extended or Higher tier algebra and then goes much further into calculus and proof. An IGCSE student who worked mentally and wrote one line will lose method marks immediately, and the non-calculator paper demands fluency that IGCSE revision rarely builds.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Closer to IGCSE in computation and much further in statistics and modelling. The new demand is writing: stating what a result means in context, what the model assumes, and where it breaks. IGCSE mathematics asks for none of that.

Biology

HL and SL

Content overlap with IGCSE is substantial and the assessment changes shape. Data-based questions carry more weight, extended responses require the accepted terminology, and the Internal Assessment demands an investigation designed by the student rather than a prescribed practical.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms go well beyond IGCSE, and Higher Level considerably further again. The practical element changes from an alternative-to-practical paper to a designed investigation assessed against criteria, which is a different task entirely.

Physics

HL and SL

The content step is manageable; the mathematical step is not always. Diploma physics assumes algebraic confidence that an IGCSE Core or Foundation route does not build, which is why a student's mathematics tier matters more for physics than their physics grade does.

Economics and Business Management

HL and SL

Frequently new subjects at Diploma level, taken by students who did not sit them at IGCSE. That is usually fine, because the content starts from the beginning, but the evaluation demand is immediate and unfamiliar to anyone trained on IGCSE knowledge questions.

History

HL and SL

The source skills from IGCSE transfer well and the essay demand does not. Diploma essays require an argument sustained across an answer rather than a sequence of accurate paragraphs, and Higher Level adds a depth study and a further written component.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

An IGCSE First Language English student arrives with directed writing and reading analysis, and meets unseen guided analysis, comparative essay writing and an Individual Oral. The last of those is wholly new and is the component students most often underprepare.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Diploma core

No IGCSE equivalent exists, and together they carry up to three of the forty-five points. Both are internally deadlined in the first Diploma year, which means they compete with settling into six new courses. Starting the Extended Essay question early is the cheapest intervention available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run this transition, each defined by the record it produces rather than by the hours it contains. All are delivered online, one to one.

Six-week bridge block

The standard shape. One subject bridged hard, usually mathematics or a Higher Level science, plus an introduction to criterion marking and an Extended Essay question narrowed. Six sessions, each producing a marked artefact, ending with a written note of the school's internal deadlines and what the marked task showed about the level choice.

  • One subject bridged, with a marked task at real Diploma difficulty
  • One piece of the student's own work marked against criteria
  • An Extended Essay question narrowed until it can be researched
  • A written note of every internal deadline for the year

Level-choice evidence block

Two or three sessions aimed only at testing a Higher Level decision before the school's change deadline. The student attempts a task at genuine Higher Level difficulty and the tutor reports what the script shows against the level's demands. Short, cheap relative to carrying the wrong level for two years, and useful whichever way it goes.

  • A marked task at the real Higher Level standard
  • A written note naming what the script shows
  • Run against the school's own change deadline
  • No obligation to continue once the decision is made

First Internal Assessment coaching

Four sessions on the first IA a student meets, which is where the transition usually goes wrong. The work is explaining what criterion descriptors require, questioning a research question or method, and commenting on a draft by naming the criterion and the band. Nothing is written for the student at any point.

  • Criterion descriptors explained in plain language first
  • Research question or method challenged before writing begins
  • Draft comments naming the criterion letter and current band
  • Comments left in the student's own document as a record

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The four demands an IGCSE student has never met

Every Diploma subject carries an Internal Assessment: a piece of work produced by the student, marked against published criteria, contributing to the final grade. An IGCSE student may have met coursework in one or two subjects and has almost certainly never met six of them running simultaneously, each with its own criteria and its own school deadline. The first one arrives in the first Diploma year, and the mark it earns is banked before any revision begins.

The Extended Essay is four thousand words of independent research with a supervisor, a reflection requirement and a submission date in the first half of the final year in most schools. Nothing in an IGCSE programme prepares a student for a piece of work of that length chosen by themselves. The commonest failure is not writing it badly; it is choosing a question too broad to research and discovering that fact in month four.

Theory of Knowledge is a course about how knowledge is made and justified, assessed through an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title. Students trained to answer questions with content find it disorienting, because there is no body of facts to learn. Together with the Extended Essay it contributes up to three points of the forty-five, which makes it worth more than most families assume.

CAS, the creativity, activity and service requirement, is a completion requirement rather than a graded one, with reflections recorded over the programme. It consumes time rather than marks, and students who leave the record until the final term create an administrative problem in the middle of examination preparation. The table below sets out all four with their deadline position and what late work costs.

THE FOUR NEW DEMANDS AND WHEN THEY BIND

02

Criterion marking against the mark scheme they know

  • Mark schemes list answers; criteria describe qualities of work
  • Marks cannot be collected point by point from a criterion
  • Practise band-judging on somebody else's short piece first
  • List the criteria and plan against them before drafting

An IGCSE student has been trained on mark schemes, and mark schemes are generous in a specific way: they list acceptable answers, and a student who produces one of them earns the mark. The relationship is transactional and learnable, which is why IGCSE revision rewards practice so directly. Criterion marking works differently. A criterion describes a quality of work at several levels, and the marker judges which description the work as a whole best fits.

The practical consequence is that a student cannot collect criterion marks point by point. An Internal Assessment with four correct results and no evaluation does not earn most of the available marks, because the criterion that rewards evaluation has nothing to judge. Conversely, a modest piece of work that addresses every criterion deliberately scores better than an impressive one that addresses three of them. Students find this unfair the first time and manageable the second.

The bridge is mechanical and takes one session. Give the student a criterion descriptor, in plain language, and a short piece of work, and ask them to decide which band it sits in and why. Then show them a band above and ask what would have to change. After doing that twice, a student reads their own draft differently, and that single shift is worth more than any amount of content teaching in the first term.

The second half of the bridge is the habit of writing against criteria rather than writing and hoping. Before producing a draft, list the criteria, write one line under each describing how the work will satisfy it, and keep that list visible while writing. It is unglamorous, it takes ten minutes, and it is the difference between a first Internal Assessment that reflects the student's ability and one that does not.

03

The subject-by-subject gap, mapped

Content overlap between IGCSE and the Diploma is larger than families expect in the sciences and mathematics, and smaller than they expect in the essay subjects. In biology and chemistry a great deal of IGCSE content reappears and is then extended, particularly at Higher Level. In mathematics the Extended or Higher tier is a genuine foundation and the Core or Foundation tier is not, which is the single most consequential piece of IGCSE history for a Diploma plan.

In the essay subjects the overlap is in skills rather than content. IGCSE history source handling transfers directly into Diploma source papers, and IGCSE First Language English directed writing transfers partially into Diploma written work. What does not transfer is the demand for a sustained argument: Diploma essays reward a line of reasoning held across an answer, where IGCSE often rewards accurate paragraphs in sequence.

Several Diploma subjects are new to most students, including economics, business management, psychology and environmental systems. That is usually not a problem, because the courses start from the beginning. The hidden cost is the evaluation demand, which arrives in the first term in all of them and is unfamiliar to a student trained on knowledge-recall questions.

The table maps the common routes with the gap and the realistic amount of support. The last column is deliberately modest: most of these gaps are weeks of work, not terms, provided they are named early rather than discovered in the mock results.

What an IGCSE grade does and does not predict

Families use IGCSE results to choose Diploma levels because they are the only evidence available, and they predict some things well and others badly. They predict content security reliably: a student with a strong grade in IGCSE Chemistry has the foundation that Diploma Chemistry assumes. They predict examination technique reasonably: a student who performed well under timed conditions will probably do so again.

What they do not predict is tolerance for independent work. The Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge all reward a student who can define a task for themselves, plan it and stick to a schedule nobody enforces daily. Nothing in an IGCSE programme measures that, and students with excellent grades frequently struggle with it while students with middling grades sometimes flourish.

They also do not predict the mathematics tier effect, which is the most mechanical and most ignored signal available. A student who sat Core or Foundation tier mathematics has not covered content that Diploma mathematics and Diploma physics both assume, and no amount of enthusiasm substitutes. That is a scheduling fact to plan around, not a judgement about ability, and it argues for either Applications and Interpretation or a substantial early block in mathematics.

The honest use of IGCSE results, then, is as one of three inputs. The second is a marked task at genuine Diploma difficulty in the candidate Higher Level subjects. The third is an honest conversation about independent work, which parents are usually better placed to assess than schools. Levels chosen on all three hold up considerably better than levels chosen on grades alone.

05

The six-week bridge block, week by week

A bridge block is short by design, because the purpose is to change habits and settle decisions rather than to pre-teach a two-year course. Six weeks is the shape that works in practice, and the value is in what exists at the end rather than in the hours spent. Each week should produce something a parent can look at without knowing the subject.

The first fortnight is diagnosis and administration. A marked task at genuine Diploma difficulty in one subject, which gives a baseline and a level signal, and a written list of every internal deadline the school has set for the year. The second of those is free and routinely skipped, and it is the item that most changes how the year runs.

The middle fortnight is criterion marking and the Extended Essay question. One piece of the student's own work marked against criteria so they have seen it applied to themselves, a session spent judging bands on somebody else's short piece, and a research question narrowed until it is small enough to actually investigate. A broad question is the single most common Extended Essay failure and it costs months.

The final fortnight is the bridged subject proper, with two marked tasks under timing so that movement is measurable rather than asserted. The block then ends. If the raw marks moved and the deadlines are written down and the Extended Essay question is settled, the transition has been bought properly, and whether to continue into weekly subject support becomes a separate decision made on evidence.

A SIX-WEEK BRIDGE BLOCK AND WHAT EACH WEEK LEAVES
WeekThe workThe artefactWhy it comes at this point
1A task at genuine Diploma difficulty in one subject, under timingA marked script with a raw mark and a dateIt sets the baseline everything else is measured against
2Collect every internal deadline from the schoolA written deadline list for the whole yearIt is free, and it restructures the year before habits set
3Criterion marking explained, then practised on a short pieceA band judgement with reasons, written by the studentUnderstanding criteria before the first IA is drafted
4The student's own work marked against criteriaComments naming the criterion letter and current bandSeeing criteria applied to their own writing is the shift

6Second marked task under the same conditions as week oneTwo raw marks side by side, with the level signal statedMovement is measured, and the block closes rather than rolling
06

The level decision, tested while it can still change

Higher Level choices are made before any Diploma content has been taught, which means they are made on IGCSE evidence and on ambition. Schools then set their own deadlines for level changes, usually within the first Diploma year, and those deadlines pass without announcement. A student who finds Higher Level Chemistry unmanageable in October and waits for the end-of-year internal examinations to prove it has usually waited past the point of choice.

The evidence that works in that conversation is a marked task at genuine Higher Level difficulty, sat under timing, with the losses classified. A school can act on that. It cannot easily act on a parent's impression or a student's discouragement, both of which are common in the first term for reasons that have nothing to do with level fit. Producing that script in the first half of the first term is the whole point of testing early.

Where a change is appropriate, the arithmetic is often better than families fear. A candidate carrying a Higher Level at grade 4 with content unsecured may well reach grade 6 at Standard Level, which improves the point total, reduces load across the other five subjects, and costs less to support because Standard Level sits in a cheaper band. The exception is where a university offer names that subject at Higher Level, in which case a change satisfies the Diploma and fails the application.

Where a change is not appropriate or not possible, the plan changes rather than ending. Concentrate funded hours on the recoverable marks: written method, command terms, the Internal Assessment and the extra component Higher Level adds. Those produce movement regardless of whether the level was the ideal choice, and they are the marks a bridge block is best placed to reach.

07

What a tutor may and may not do with the first Internal Assessment

This is the part of the transition where boundaries matter most, because it is the first time an IGCSE student encounters assessed work produced outside examination conditions and the first time anybody offers to help with it inappropriately. Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work, and the IB treats submitted work that is not as malpractice, with the consequence falling on the student rather than on whoever was paid.

Inside that boundary a tutor can do a great deal, and it happens to be the part students find hardest. Explaining what a criterion descriptor actually asks for, in plain language, with an example drawn from a different topic. Questioning whether a research question can be investigated at the required depth. Pointing out that a control variable is not controlled, or that a measurement's uncertainty undermines the conclusion. Commenting on a draft by naming the criterion, the band it currently sits in, and what the band above requires.

What a tutor cannot do is write, rewrite or complete any part of it. One site competing for UAE coursework searches advertises completed Internal Assessments for a fixed fee, which is not tutoring and is a risk transfer running entirely the wrong way. A family paying for that buys a malpractice finding, and the student loses the qualification rather than the money.

Stating the boundary explicitly helps rather than restricts, and it is the main reason written comments in the student's own document are better than a verbal call. The comments are honest feedback, they are a visible record of what support was given, and your child's supervisor is entitled to ask. An answer that is comfortable to give is a good sign about the arrangement.

08

What this costs, and what to refuse

Published Dubai rates give the arithmetic. A qualified online subject tutor sits at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialist IB work is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table, TutorChase at AED 270, and BartyED's premium named tier at AED 650. A six-week bridge block of six sessions therefore runs roughly AED 900 to 2,700, and a four-session Internal Assessment block around AED 800 to 1,800. Those are market figures, not IB Gram's; our rate is quoted after the free trial lesson with the session length and marking inclusion stated.

Refuse a transition course sold as a term of content across several subjects. The gap is not content, and a plan that treats it as content will bill for a term and leave the four new demands untouched. If a provider cannot name which artefacts the block produces, they are selling attendance at a Diploma-shaped lecture.

Refuse any offer to supply IB past papers, mark schemes or subject guides as downloads. Those belong to the International Baccalaureate, and privately circulated copies are frequently from superseded guides. The school's Diploma coordinator and the IB's own store are the routes, and for a transitioning student the coordinator is the better one anyway, since they also hold the deadlines.

Insist on three outputs in writing: the marked task with a raw mark and a date, the internal deadline list, and a statement of what the block will not reach. No success rate, average point score or satisfaction figure appears on this page, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method, and no tutor can promise a Diploma score.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

What location changes here is when a bridge block can realistically run, because the move happens across a long summer and into a busy first term. These notes cover the pattern across the city.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills

Large cohorts moving from IGCSE into the Diploma inside the same school group, so the level-choice window falls in the same weeks for many families. Weekend slots for a marked Diploma-difficulty task book out early in the first term.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

A high share of students moving from a British-curriculum school into an IB school elsewhere in the city, which means a new school as well as a new qualification. The internal deadline list matters doubly when nobody in the family knows the school yet.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Short commutes make a weekday 16:30 session realistic, which suits a six-week bridge block in the first term. That is the period when the block is most useful and the slot least likely to be cancelled.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Long eastern commutes mean a first-term evening session finishes late and tired. A weekend block for the marked task plus a short midweek check on an Internal Assessment draft works better than two full weekday sessions.

Downtown, Business Bay and Al Jaddaf

Central towers close to two continuum IB schools, where students often arrive into the Diploma from an IGCSE route in a different emirate or country. Establishing which syllabus they actually sat is the first task rather than an assumption.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Sports City

Many mid-year and mid-phase arrivals, so a student may be entering the Diploma without a settled IGCSE profile behind them. That changes a bridge block from technique work into genuine content work, and it should be said plainly.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Find out which IGCSE the student actually sat

Board, syllabus code and tier for mathematics and the sciences specifically. The mathematics tier is the most consequential single fact for a Diploma plan, because Core or Foundation tier leaves content that Diploma mathematics and physics both assume, and no enthusiasm substitutes for it.

  2. 02

Collect every internal deadline in the first fortnight

Ask the Diploma coordinator for the Internal Assessment deadlines in all six subjects plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, and put them on one calendar. It costs an email and restructures the year before any habits have set.

  3. 03

Produce one marked task at real Diploma difficulty

In the candidate Higher Level subject, under timing, marked against the published standard, with the losses classified as content, command term, method or time. That script is the baseline, the level signal and the evidence a school will weigh if a change is needed.

  4. 04

Bridge criterion marking, then the Extended Essay question

One session judging bands on somebody else's short piece, one with the student's own work marked against criteria, and one narrowing the Extended Essay question until it could genuinely be investigated in four thousand words. Three sessions, three artefacts.

  5. 05

Close the block on a second marked task

Same subject, same conditions, same length as the first, with the two raw marks side by side. Then stop and decide separately whether weekly subject support is warranted, on the evidence rather than on momentum. A block that rolls on without that decision is a subscription.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We treat the gap as structural, not academic

Six subjects, criterion marking and four new assessed demands are the transition; content is largely continuous in the sciences and mathematics. A block aimed at content will bill for a term and leave the actual gap untouched, which is what most transition courses do.

The deadline list is a deliverable

Every internal deadline across six subjects and the core, written on one calendar in the first fortnight. It costs nothing, it is skipped by almost everyone, and it is the single change that most alters how a first Diploma year runs.

The level choice is tested while it can change

A marked task at genuine Higher Level difficulty in the first half of the first term, because the school's change deadline passes quietly and a parental impression is not evidence a coordinator can act on.

Criterion marking is taught, not described

The student judges bands on a short piece, then sees criteria applied to their own writing. Two sessions of that changes how they read every draft afterwards, which is worth more in the first term than any amount of pre-teaching.

A stated line on the first Internal Assessment

A tutor explains criteria, questions methods and comments on drafts, and writes no part of an IA, Extended Essay or TOK essay. Comments go into the student's own document so the record is visible if the supervisor asks, which it may.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What actually changes between IGCSE and the IB Diploma?+

The structure, far more than the content. Six subjects instead of eight or nine, three of them at a level with sixty per cent more published teaching hours, an internally assessed piece of work in every subject, a four thousand word Extended Essay, a course about knowledge itself, and a service and activity requirement with written reflections. Content in the sciences and mathematics is largely continuous and then extended. Families who treat the move as a content problem spend on content and the difficulty persists, because the content was never the issue.

Does a strong set of IGCSE grades predict a strong Diploma score?+

Partly. They predict content security well and timed examination technique reasonably. They predict tolerance for independent work hardly at all, and that is exactly what the Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge reward. Students with excellent IGCSE results sometimes struggle with work nobody enforces daily, while students with middling results sometimes flourish. Use the grades as one input of three, alongside a marked task at real Diploma difficulty and an honest view of how the student handles self-directed work.

Which IGCSE subjects map onto which Higher Level choices?+

Extended or Higher tier mathematics maps reasonably onto Analysis and Approaches; Core or Foundation tier does not, and that single fact also constrains Diploma physics, which assumes algebraic confidence. IGCSE Biology and Chemistry map onto the same subjects at either level, with real content extension at Higher Level. IGCSE History and Geography transfer their source skills and not their essay style. Several Diploma subjects such as economics and psychology are new to most students, which is fine because they start from the beginning.

What are the four new components my child has never met?+

The Internal Assessment in each of six subjects, marked against published criteria with a school deadline in each. The Extended Essay, four thousand words of independent research with a supervisor and a reflection requirement. Theory of Knowledge, assessed through an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title, which with the Extended Essay carries up to three of the forty-five points. And CAS, a completion requirement with recorded reflections that consumes time rather than marks. All four are internally deadlined before the written papers.

Should a bridge block run over the summer or in the first term?+

The first term, for most families. Over the summer the useful work is narrow: the mathematical or scientific technique the Diploma assumes, and one honest introduction to what an Internal Assessment is. Almost everything else needs the school's actual deadlines, the real subject teachers and real tasks, none of which exist in August. The first term also coincides with the school's level-change window, which is the decision a block can most usefully inform while it is still open.

What evidence should a transition course produce each week?+

Something a parent can look at without knowing the subject. A marked script with a raw mark, a date and the conditions it was sat under. A band judgement the student wrote themselves. Comments on a draft naming the criterion letter and the band. A written deadline list. A research question that could genuinely be investigated in four thousand words. If a week produced only a conversation about settling in, that is worth one week and should not be the pattern across six.

How is criterion marking different from a mark scheme?+

A mark scheme lists acceptable answers, so a student who produces one earns the mark; the relationship is transactional and learnable, which is why IGCSE practice works so directly. A criterion describes a quality of work at several levels, and the marker judges which description the work as a whole best fits. The practical consequence is that criterion marks cannot be collected point by point: an Internal Assessment with correct results and no evaluation loses the marks that reward evaluation, because that criterion has nothing to judge.

Can a tutor help with my child's first Internal Assessment?+

Within a boundary worth stating plainly. A tutor can explain what a criterion descriptor asks for, question whether a research question can be investigated at the required depth, point out an uncontrolled variable, and comment on a draft by naming the criterion, the band it sits in and what the band above needs. A tutor cannot write, rewrite or complete any part of it. The work must be the student's own, and the consequence of breaching that falls on the student rather than on whoever was paid.

Is it worth preparing for Theory of Knowledge in advance?+

A little, and not in the way families expect. There is no content to pre-learn, so reading a textbook achieves nothing. What helps is one session on the kind of question the course asks, so a student arriving from a content-driven qualification understands that answers are arguments about how claims are justified rather than recollections of facts. Beyond that, the useful preparation is the Extended Essay question, because the two compete for the same weeks and the essay has the harder deadline.

My child took Core tier IGCSE mathematics. Can they do Diploma mathematics?+

Yes, and the realistic route is Applications and Interpretation, usually at Standard Level, unless a substantial early block closes the algebra gap. Core tier omits content that Analysis and Approaches assumes from the first weeks, and the same gap constrains Diploma physics, which is why the mathematics tier matters more for the physics grade than the physics grade does. This is a scheduling fact rather than a judgement, and naming it before levels are confirmed prevents two difficult years.

Do you run transition sessions at our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. For a transition block that is genuinely the better format. Comments on a first Internal Assessment draft are typed into the student's own document and stay there, which is both clearer feedback and a visible record of what help was given if the supervisor asks. Marked scripts and raw marks also accumulate in one place across the block.

How long should a bridge block be, and what does it cost?+

Six sessions is the shape that works, aimed at one subject plus criterion marking and the Extended Essay question. At published Dubai bands of AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for a specialist, that is roughly AED 900 to 2,700. A separate four-session Internal Assessment block runs about AED 800 to 1,800. Those are market figures from Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate rather than ours, and any quote should state session length and whether marking is included.

Should my child read ahead through a Diploma textbook over the summer?+

Mostly no. Reading ahead without tasks, feedback or a teacher produces familiarity rather than capability, and in criterion-assessed work familiarity earns nothing. The summer is better spent on two narrow things: the algebraic or scientific technique the Diploma assumes and the student may not have, and the habit of writing method and reasoning out in full rather than working mentally. Both are small, both transfer directly, and both are worth more in September than fifty pages of pre-reading.

What if the Higher Level choice turns out to be wrong?+

Act while the school's change window is open, which is usually within the first Diploma year and passes without announcement. Produce a marked task at genuine Higher Level difficulty so the school has evidence it can act on, and check whether any university route names that subject at Higher Level before changing anything. Where no offer names it and content is the real problem, moving to Standard Level can raise the point total, reduce load across five other subjects and cost less to support at the same time.

Is an IGCSE student at a disadvantage against a classmate from the MYP?+

They start with different strengths rather than a deficit. An IGCSE student arrives with stronger externally examined technique: timed writing, mark scheme awareness, revision discipline. An MYP student arrives having been criterion-marked for several years and is more comfortable with internally assessed work and with reflection. Over two years both gaps close. The IGCSE student's gap closes faster if criterion marking is bridged deliberately in the first term rather than learned slowly through disappointing Internal Assessment marks.

Buy the block for what it leaves behind

A transition block is worth paying for when it produces four things: a marked task at genuine Diploma difficulty with a raw mark and a date, a written list of every internal deadline the school has set for the year, one piece of the student's own work marked against criteria so they have seen the shift, and an Extended Essay question narrow enough to research. Book the free trial lesson, bring the IGCSE board and tier for mathematics and the sciences, and ask which of those four the block will deliver and by when. Then close it on a second marked task and decide what comes next from the two raw marks.
