IB DP Tutor in Dubai

A useful IB DP tutor in Dubai starts from the mark map rather than from the textbook. This page publishes it: component weightings paper by paper, internal assessment criteria named by letter with their mark allocations, the word and page limits across every DP component, and an honest estimate of how many hours each common fix takes and what that costs at published Dubai rates. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

DP stands for Diploma Programme, and the marks are not where parents assume

DP is the IB's shorthand for the Diploma Programme, the two-year course taken at 16 to 19. The abbreviation turns up constantly in Dubai school communications, and families who have arrived from another system often meet it before they meet an explanation. It matters here because searching for a DP tutor rather than an IB tutor usually signals a parent already inside the programme, dealing with a specific component rather than wondering what the Diploma is.

The thing almost nobody is told early is where the marks sit. Parents reasonably assume a subject grade is mostly the final papers, with coursework as a modest extra. In most DP subjects the internally assessed component carries a fifth or more of the subject grade, and at Higher Level a third paper appears that is worth roughly as much as the internal assessment. Add the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, both marked against published criteria with hard word limits, and a substantial share of a candidate's result is decided by work that is not sat in an examination hall.

That has a direct consequence for how tutoring money should be spent. An hour spent narrowing a research question before any writing happens affects a criterion worth several marks and cannot be replicated later. An hour spent on general content revision in April affects whatever the student happens to meet on the paper. Those are not equivalent purchases, and the published rates in this market, roughly AED 150 to 300 for an online qualified subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for an exam-level specialist, apply to both equally.

So this page publishes the map. Component weightings by subject and level, with the honest caveat that subject guides are revised and your child's coordinator holds the authoritative version. Internal assessment criteria named by letter with their mark allocations, which no competing page in this market appears to do at all. Word and page limits in one table, because exceeding them is an avoidable loss. And an estimate of how many hours each common fix takes, converted into AED at published mid-band rates so the comparison is concrete.

IB Gram matches DP students to subject specialists for one-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled around a Dubai school week in Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. We quote per match after a free first lesson rather than publishing a rate card, and we tell you which band a request sits in before anything is paid. Every market figure on this page belongs to the provider named beside it and was read in October 2026. If a figure on this page differs from the one your coordinator gives you, trust the coordinator.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Diploma Programme is one of four IB programmes, and the mark structures differ sharply between them. Knowing which one your child is in tells you whether criteria or papers are the thing to work on.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard, each assessed through externally marked papers plus an internally assessed component. The core adds the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Award conditions are set by the IB and confirmed by your school's coordinator rather than by any tutoring page.

Dubai DP candidates sit the same papers and the same criteria as candidates anywhere, which is worth stating because families sometimes assume a regional variation exists. What is local is the school's internal deadline calendar and its own marking standard before IB moderation, and both differ noticeably between IB World Schools in the emirate.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight and reported as a letter and number rather than a percentage. There are no papers in the DP sense, so the whole conversation is about descriptors. A student arriving in DP from MYP already reads a rubric fluently and is usually underprepared for the volume of timed written papers.

Dubai MYP reports confuse parents more than DP reports do, because a criterion score of 5 out of 8 is not a percentage and does not translate into a familiar grade. Working out which of the four criteria is holding a subject down is the single most useful thing to establish before buying any hours.

DP coreAges 16-19 · across both DP years

Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

The Extended Essay is marked against five criteria totalling 34 marks within a 4,000-word limit, supervised by the school. The Theory of Knowledge essay is written on a prescribed title with a 1,600-word limit, and the exhibition has its own shorter commentary limit. Both are externally assessed and both reward criterion-shaped writing over polish.

Internal deadlines for these components vary by several weeks across Dubai IB schools, and the long summer break between the Diploma years is where Extended Essay progress most often stalls. Hours spent scoping the research question before that break are worth several times the same hours spent after it.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

At least two DP courses plus a career-related study, a reflective project and further core elements. The DP subjects inside it are examined identically to the Diploma versions, so the mark map on this page applies directly to those components.

Few UAE schools offer the Career-related Programme, so UAE-based tutor coverage for it is thin and most matches come from our wider pool at a Dubai-friendly hour. The subject depth and the online one-to-one format are unchanged.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each subject below, the note names the component where the largest recoverable marks usually sit for Dubai candidates. Confirm the exact weightings against your child's current subject guide.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At Standard Level two papers carry 40% each with the exploration at 20%. At Higher Level a third paper appears, typically 20%, alongside two papers at 30% each and the exploration at 20%. Paper 3 is where a Higher Level candidate most often leaves marks unclaimed, because structured investigation is rarely practised.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The same weighting shape as Analysis and Approaches, with a Higher Level third paper. Interpretation marks are the distinctive recoverable set here: a correct regression or model with no sentence about what it means in the scenario leaves marks on the table every time.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Under the current guide Paper 1 carries 36% of the subject grade, Paper 2 carries 44% and the scientific investigation 20%, at both levels. The investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria, with research design and evaluation the two most commonly underprepared.

Physics

HL and SL

The same 36, 44 and 20 split as the other sciences under the current guide. Paper 2 extended responses hold the largest recoverable set, because method and reasoning marks are awarded for stated steps rather than for a correct final value.

Biology

HL and SL

Also 36, 44 and 20 under the current guide. Extended responses are point-marked against lists of creditable statements, so making five accurate plain points beats writing elegantly about one, and command-term discipline is the dominant recoverable issue.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level commonly runs Paper 1 at 30%, Paper 2 at 40% and the internal assessment at 30%, while Higher Level adds a quantitative third paper and reduces the internal assessment share. Diagram marks are individually creditable and routinely half-claimed.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Entirely markband-judged. Standard Level typically splits two papers at 35% each with the individual oral at 30%; Higher Level adds a separate essay on a studied work. Paraphrase in place of analysis is the single largest loss across Dubai cohorts.

History

HL and SL

Standard Level commonly runs Paper 1 at 30%, Paper 2 at 45% and the historical investigation at 25%; Higher Level adds a third paper on a regional option. The investigation is marked out of 25 across three criteria, with the investigation section carrying most of them.

Business Management

HL and SL

Typically Paper 1 at 35%, Paper 2 at 40% and the internal assessment at 25% at both levels, with Higher Level content extending the case material. Application to the stimulus is separately creditable from tool knowledge, and that is where the grade separates.

Psychology

HL and SL

Standard Level commonly weights Paper 1 heavily with Paper 2 and the experimental study making up the remainder; Higher Level adds a third paper on research methodology. The experimental study's criteria reward method justification more than results.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The essay is written on a prescribed title within a 1,600-word limit and is externally assessed against a single global criterion. The exhibition has its own commentary limit. Title choice sets the ceiling, which makes it the cheapest high-value decision in the core.

Extended Essay

Core

Marked out of 34 across criteria A to E: focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, and engagement. Critical thinking alone carries 12 of the 34, which is why a narrow answerable question matters more than elegant prose.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each format below targets a different part of the mark map. All are delivered one-to-one over live video.

Component-targeted sessions

Sessions aimed at one named component: Paper 3, the individual oral, the scientific investigation's evaluation criterion. The agenda is set by the weighting table rather than by the textbook order, which usually means working on something the school has not reached yet.

  • One component per block, named at the start
  • Agenda set by weighting and recoverable marks
  • Past-paper material for that component only
  • Written note stating the marks targeted

Criterion-mapping session for coursework

A session spent putting the student's draft beside the criteria and checking, criterion by letter, whether the evidence is actually present and findable. Not editing: identifying which criterion has no evidence and asking the student what they will do about it.

  • Criteria listed by letter with mark allocations
  • Evidence located or found to be missing
  • Student decides every change and makes it
  • Version history shows who changed what

Timed-paper clinic with self-marking

The student writes to time, then marks their own work against the published criteria while the tutor challenges every mark awarded. Over four or five rounds the student's marking converges on accurate marking, and the writing changes to produce creditable material.

  • Paper written to time, not in instalments
  • Student awards marks and justifies each one
  • Disagreements become the content of the lesson
  • Convergence tracked as the progress measure

Free diagnostic first lesson

A full lesson at no cost built around a marked paper you supply. It ends with a written statement naming the dominant loss pattern, the component it affects, the marks typically at stake and a rough number of hours. You keep that whether or not you continue.

  • No payment and no card details beforehand
  • Marked paper or draft supplied in advance
  • Ends with a loss pattern and an hours estimate
  • Change the match afterwards at no cost

01

Component weightings across the common DP subjects

The first thing to establish about any DP subject is how the grade is divided, because that determines which hour of work is worth most. The table below gives the shape for the subjects Dubai families most often ask about. Two cautions apply to every row. Subject guides are revised, and a revision can change the number of papers, the internal assessment task and the weightings. And your child's coordinator holds the authoritative version for their cohort, so a figure here is a starting point for a conversation rather than a fact to plan two years around.

Reading the table, three patterns stand out. First, the internally assessed component is rarely trivial: a fifth of the subject grade is typical and some subjects go higher. Second, Higher Level normally adds a third paper worth roughly as much as the internal assessment, which is a substantial block of marks most families do not discover until a mock result arrives. Third, the paper carrying the largest single share is usually the extended-response paper rather than the short-answer one, which is why technique rather than content coverage tends to be the better purchase.

That third pattern is worth sitting with. If Paper 2 carries 44% of a science grade and rewards reasoning expressed in stated steps, then a student who knows the content and does not write the steps is losing marks in the largest block available. No amount of additional content fixes that, and the fix itself is quick: three or four sessions of writing practice with the criteria visible. The weighting table is how a family works out that this is where to spend.

The same logic applies to the core. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria, and critical thinking alone carries 12 of them. Presentation carries 4. A family that spends its hours on formatting and referencing while the research question remains too broad to answer is optimising a four-mark criterion and ignoring a twelve-mark one. That is an avoidable mistake and the table is the cheapest way to avoid it.

Internal assessment criteria, named by letter with their marks

This is the part of the DP nobody publishes. Across the competitor pages researched for this market, not one names a single internal assessment criterion by letter or states its mark allocation, which is remarkable given that the internal assessment typically carries a fifth or more of a subject grade and is the component a tutor can most legitimately help with.

The letters matter because criteria are judged separately on a best-fit basis. Strength in one does not compensate for a gap in another, so a draft that is excellent on presentation and silent on evaluation loses the evaluation marks entirely. The practical method is mechanical: list the criteria, and for each one ask where in the draft the evidence for it is. If the answer is a vague gesture at several pages, the marker will not find it either.

Take the mathematics exploration, marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest single allocation at 6, and reflection and personal engagement carry 3 each. A student who produces impeccable notation and no genuine reflection is leaving a sixth of the component unclaimed, and nothing about that is visible from a general instruction to work harder.

Or take the Extended Essay, marked out of 34: focus and method 6, knowledge and understanding 6, critical thinking 12, presentation 4, engagement 6. Critical thinking is more than a third of the total. That single fact reorders what a sensible support plan looks like, and it is published freely by the IB. A tutor who works from it is doing something different in kind from one who reads a draft and comments on the writing.

Word, page and time limits across the Diploma

Limits are hard edges, not guidance, and exceeding them is the most avoidable loss in the entire programme. The frustrating part is that students who exceed a limit have usually worked harder than those who did not. A 5,000-word Extended Essay represents more effort than a 3,900-word one and will be marked worse, because assessment stops at the stated limit and everything after it is invisible.

The limits also shape what a research question can be. A student who proposes a question requiring four case studies in 2,200 words has designed something that cannot be done, and that is a scoping problem to catch in the first conversation rather than in the fourth draft. The most useful question a tutor can ask early is: can this actually be answered within the limit, with the sources you can reach, in the time available? A no is cheap in September and ruinous in March.

On timed components, the parallel discipline is minutes per mark. A paper's duration divided by its marks gives a rough budget, and students who have never calculated it routinely spend fifteen minutes on a four-mark question and three on a twelve-mark one. Doing that arithmetic once, and practising to it twice, is one of the fastest available gains, and it costs an hour.

A caution before the table: limits and durations are set in the subject guides and can change when a guide is revised. The figures below are the commonly published ones, and your child's coordinator holds the authoritative version for their cohort. We reference and link official sources rather than redistributing board documents, because reproducing them is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, an integrity matter as well.

Hours to marks: what each common fix costs at published Dubai rates

This is the cost conversation done properly. Instead of asking what a DP tutor costs per hour, ask what each specific fix costs in total and what it is worth in marks. The hourly figure then becomes a detail rather than the decision. Published rates in this market for an online qualified subject tutor run roughly AED 150 to 300, and for an exam-level specialist roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai table reaching AED 450 and beyond.

Using a mid-band figure for arithmetic, a four-hour fix at a specialist rate is a few hundred dirhams per hour and a low four-figure total, and several of the fixes below take four hours. Compare that with a weekly subject session across a whole DP2 year, which is around twenty-eight sessions, and the difference in total outlay is substantial. Some students genuinely need the latter. Many need two or three of the former and are sold the latter because nobody did the diagnosis.

The marks column below is deliberately framed as what is typically at stake rather than what will be gained. Nobody can promise marks, and any provider who does is making a claim about papers nobody has seen and boundaries set after marking. What can be said honestly is which component a fix affects and how many marks that component carries, which is a different and more useful statement.

One row deserves emphasis because it is the cheapest high-value hour in the programme. Scoping an Extended Essay research question properly takes two to three hours, happens in DP1, and affects criterion C, worth 12 of the essay's 34 marks, plus criterion A at 6. No later intervention recovers a question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words. Families who buy nothing else should buy that.

What a raw internal assessment mark becomes, and why boundaries move

  • A raw internal assessment mark is scaled by the component's weighting
  • School marking is moderated against the IB's standard and a cohort can be adjusted
  • Grade boundaries are set per session after marking and published with results
  • Work sitting clearly inside a band is less exposed to adjustment
  • Moderation outcomes and results enquiries belong with the school's coordinator

Parents are routinely shown a raw internal assessment mark and left to guess what it means. Two conversions sit between that number and a subject grade. First, weighting: a mark out of 20 or 24 is scaled to the component's share of the subject grade, so a four-mark gap on a 20-mark exploration worth a fifth of the grade is not the same as a four-mark gap on a paper worth nearly half. Second, moderation: the school's marking is compared against the IB's standard using a sample, and a whole cohort's marks can be adjusted up or down.

That second step is the one that surprises Dubai families most, because a mark that appeared on a February report can arrive differently in July. It is routine rather than a judgement about an individual student, and nobody can predict it. The only lever available is to make the work unambiguously defensible against each criterion, because a piece sitting clearly inside a band is less exposed to adjustment than one sitting on a boundary.

On grade boundaries, the honest position is that they are set per session after marking and published with results, not before. Anyone telling a student in March exactly what raw mark a 6 will require in the coming session is guessing. What can be said is where this student's marks are currently being lost and which losses are cheapest to recover, which is more actionable than a boundary estimate would be even if one existed.

Two things follow for a family. Treat a school report as a direction of travel rather than a result, and look instead at artefacts: a marked timed paper with the losses mapped, an internal assessment draft at a stage where feedback can still change it, a list of questions scored around half marks. And route questions about a specific moderation outcome or a results enquiry to your school's IB coordinator, who is the only person able to act on either.

06

Higher Level against Standard Level, compared properly

Families are usually told that Higher Level is harder, which is true and useless. The differences that matter are structural: more content, an additional paper in most subjects, the same internal assessment in some and a different one in others, and a different expectation about independence. A student choosing between the two, or struggling at Higher Level, needs those differences itemised rather than characterised.

The additional paper is the part most often underestimated. In mathematics it is a structured investigation rewarding the communication of reasoning on an unfamiliar problem, which is unlike anything in Papers 1 and 2. In History it is an essay paper on a regional option with its own content. In Economics and Psychology it is a methodological or quantitative paper. In each case it is a block of marks that cannot be prepared for by doing more of what Papers 1 and 2 require, and it is the component Dubai Higher Level candidates most often meet unprepared in a mock.

The second structural difference is tutoring hours per mark. Higher Level content is broader, so content coverage is genuinely more expensive, while technique work transfers at the same rate across both levels. That argues for a specific sequencing: fix technique first, because it is cheap and applies to every paper, and only then decide whether a content programme is justified. Families who do it the other way round spend more and move less.

The decision itself belongs with the school. If three Higher Levels are producing more extended written work per fortnight than a student can produce at all, that is a timetable matter and only the coordinator can change it, and the window for doing so comfortably is DP1 term one. A tutor's job in that situation is to say so clearly and early rather than to sell eighteen months of symptom management.

Where Dubai DP candidates lose marks, by pattern rather than by topic

Across the marked DP work we see from Dubai schools, losses cluster into a small number of patterns rather than spreading across the syllabus. Naming the pattern is what turns a vague worry into a four-hour plan. Five patterns account for most of it.

The first is command-term substitution: answering evaluate as though it said explain, which caps the top band in every extended response. The second is absent working in mathematics and the quantitative sciences, which forfeits method marks and blocks follow-through credit, so one arithmetic slip costs an entire question instead of one mark. The third is partial statement in point-marked science questions, where a student knows the idea and expresses two-thirds of it and earns nothing.

The fourth is coursework scope: a research question too broad to control, which caps several criteria simultaneously and cannot be fixed after the data is gathered. The fifth is timing, both within a paper, where fifteen minutes goes on a four-mark question, and across the programme, where a component is met for the first time in a mock. Each of these is diagnosable from one marked script and addressable in three or four sessions.

What is usually not the problem: general ability, effort, or a need to restart the syllabus. A DP student who has reached the second year has demonstrated the capacity to do the work. The question is almost always which of these five patterns is costing them marks, and the answer is visible in the marked work they already have at home. That is why the free first lesson is built around a script rather than around a conversation.

Delivery, matching and coverage for Dubai DP families

Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on a shared screen, scheduled around a Dubai school week in Gulf Standard Time, usually between 16:30 and 20:30 and typically sixty to ninety minutes. The shared screen matters for mark-map work specifically, because the question, the answer and the criteria can all sit on one screen and the file is saved afterwards for revision.

Matching is on component rather than on subject alone, since the whole argument of this page is that components differ. A tutor strong on Papers 1 and 2 is not automatically the right person for a Higher Level third paper, and a tutor who has supervised a scientific investigation is not automatically right for unseen textual analysis. We say which specialist we are proposing and what they have taught, and we change the match at no cost if the trial shows a mismatch.

Coverage is uneven and we publish it rather than letting you discover it. Common subjects at common levels match within a few days. Scarce Higher Level components take one to two weeks, and longer between February and May when DP cohorts across the emirate converge on the same specialists. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the match comes from our wider pool of IB subject teachers in other time zones, at a Dubai-friendly hour, with no change to format or depth.

What we will not do: produce any part of an internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge piece, because everything submitted must be the student's own work and the consequences of crossing that line fall on the candidate; redistribute board syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes, which we reference and link instead; or promise a mark, a grade or a moderation outcome. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

Spread-out community with newer school provision, where requests tend to arrive as a question about one internal assessment rather than a whole subject.

Al Twar

Dense residential area feeding large schools, where the common pattern is a DP student with a sibling on a different curriculum and two incompatible report formats in the same household.

Muhaisnah

High student numbers across a mix of systems. Parents here most often ask how a raw internal assessment mark turns into a grade, which is the question the weighting table answers directly.

Al Rashidiya

Central and well connected, with students commuting to Diploma schools elsewhere in the emirate. Late evening slots dominate, which shapes which components we work on when.

Nad Al Hamar

Mixed residential community where several families arrive mid-programme from other countries, so the first job is mapping which components have already been assessed and which remain.

Al Mamzar

Close to the northern edge of the emirate, with some families comparing Dubai and Sharjah school options. The regulator differs across that line, which is worth knowing even though the DP mark map does not change.

Hor Al Anz

Older established area with large cohorts and a strong culture of exam-focused support, where the useful correction is that coursework criteria carry more weight than families assume.

Dubai IB World Schools running the Diploma Programme

These schools between them cover most of the emirate's DP cohort. Their internal assessment and Extended Essay deadlines differ by several weeks, so the useful planning document is your own school's assessment calendar rather than a generic DP timeline.

Dubai schools whose students arrive in DP from another system

A significant share of Dubai DP candidates come from IGCSE or an American system. The recognisable pattern is strong content recall and weak extended-response structure, which the weighting table explains: the papers that carry the most marks are the ones rewarding sustained argument.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked paper and the component

The script, the question paper if the school released it, and which component it belongs to. The mark map only becomes useful against real work, and a request that names the component gets matched to a tutor who has taught that component.

  2. 02

Free diagnostic lesson against the weightings

One full lesson at no cost. It ends with a written statement naming the dominant loss pattern, the component it affects, what that component carries in the subject grade and roughly how many hours the fix takes.

  3. 03

Pick the fix by what it is worth

We propose the fix affecting the largest block of recoverable marks first, which is often not the subject the family called about. Scoping an Extended Essay question beats general content revision in almost every case.

  4. 04

Agree hours against a named component

A capped block aimed at one component, with the criteria and weightings written into the plan. Extending is an explicit decision, which is what stops a four-hour fix becoming an open weekly commitment.

  5. 05

    Track self-marking convergence

In timed-paper work the measurable indicator is how far the student's own marking has moved towards accurate marking. It is visible well before a grade moves and it is what the session-four review looks at.

  6. 06

Route the rest to the school

Weighting confirmation, moderation outcomes, timetable changes and results enquiries belong with your school's IB coordinator. We say which questions are theirs, including when that means you need fewer hours from us.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We publish the mark map

Component weightings, internal assessment criteria by letter with their allocations, and the word and page limits in one place. No competing page in this market appears to name a single criterion letter, and it is the information a plan should be built on.

Fixes priced as totals, not hourly rates

We state roughly how many hours a named fix takes and what that comes to at published mid-band rates, so you can compare a four-hour intervention against a year of weekly sessions on the same page.

Matched on component

A Higher Level third paper, a scientific investigation criterion and an unseen-text paper need different teachers. We name which specialist we are proposing and what they have taught, and change the match at no cost if the trial disagrees.

Figures hedged where they should be

Every weighting and limit here carries a verify-with-your-coordinator caution, because subject guides are revised. We would rather give you a figure with a caveat than a confident number that is a guide version out of date.

No claims about marks or boundaries

Boundaries are set per session after marking and published with results. Moderation can adjust a whole cohort. We state what a component carries and where marks are being lost, and we promise neither an outcome nor a boundary.

Coursework boundary in writing

The student writes every submitted word. A tutor lists the criteria, asks where the evidence for each one is, and gives feedback on material the student has already produced. Version history records who made each change.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the difference between IB and IB DP?+

The International Baccalaureate runs several programmes, and DP is the abbreviation for the Diploma Programme, the two-year course taken at ages 16 to 19. The others are the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Career-related Programme. Dubai school communications use the abbreviations constantly, so a parent may meet DP1 and DP2 before anyone explains them: they are simply the first and second years of the Diploma. If you are searching for a DP tutor rather than an IB tutor, you are almost certainly already inside the programme and dealing with a specific component.

How much is the Higher Level third paper worth in a DP subject?+

Typically around a fifth of the subject grade, though it varies by subject and by guide version. In mathematics at Higher Level the usual shape is two papers at about 30% each, a third paper at about 20% and the exploration at about 20%. In History the third paper carries a larger share. The important point is structural rather than numerical: the third paper tests something the other two do not, whether that is structured investigation, a regional option or research methodology, so it needs its own preparation block. Confirm the exact figures with your child's coordinator.

How much does the internal assessment count towards a DP subject grade?+

Commonly a fifth, and in some subjects more. The mathematics exploration is usually about 20%, the science scientific investigation about 20%, the history historical investigation about 25%, and Economics at Standard Level has carried about 30%. That is far more than most families assume, and it is also the component a tutor can most legitimately help with, since the work is criterion-marked and the criteria are published. Check your child's subject guide through their coordinator, because weightings change when a guide is revised and a figure from an older guide can mislead a whole plan.

What are the criteria for the IB mathematics exploration?+

Five, marked out of 20 in total: criterion A presentation worth 4, criterion B mathematical communication worth 4, criterion C personal engagement worth 3, criterion D reflection worth 3, and criterion E use of mathematics worth 6. The practical consequence is that use of mathematics carries the largest single allocation while reflection and personal engagement together carry 6, which students routinely treat as a concluding paragraph rather than as a sixth of the component. Listing the criteria and asking where the evidence for each sits in the draft is the method; confirm the current totals with your coordinator.

What is the word limit for a DP internal assessment?+

It differs by subject, and the limits are hard edges rather than guidance. Commonly published figures include about 3,000 words for a science scientific investigation, about 2,200 for a history historical investigation, 1,200 to 1,500 for an English Higher Level essay, and page-count guidance rather than a word limit for the mathematics exploration. Exceeding a limit is the most avoidable loss in the programme, because assessment stops at the stated point and the extra work is simply unread. Check your child's subject guide through the coordinator before planning a piece around any figure.

Are IB grade boundaries the same every year?+

No. Boundaries are set for each examination session after the papers have been marked, and they are published with results rather than in advance. That is why any specific figure quoted to a student in March for the coming session is a guess presented as information. What can be said usefully is where this student's marks are currently being lost, which of those losses is cheapest to recover and what the work would look like if it moved. A tutor who claims to know a future boundary is making a claim nobody in the system is able to make.

What does Higher Level actually add compared with Standard Level?+

Four things, and only one of them is difficulty. More content, because the syllabus adds higher-level material. An additional paper in most subjects, usually worth around a fifth of the grade and testing something the first two papers do not. A greater expectation of independent work. And in some subjects an extended or different internal assessment. For tutoring that means content coverage genuinely costs more hours at Higher Level, while technique work transfers at the same rate across both levels, which argues for fixing technique first and deciding about content afterwards.

Which DP components reward structure more than content knowledge?+

The markband components, which include English papers, History essays, the Theory of Knowledge essay and most criterion-marked coursework. These are judged holistically against level descriptors, so sustained argument, focus and organisation decide the band and additional coverage adds nothing. Point-marked components work the other way: science short questions and mathematics method marks credit each distinct accurate statement or step independently, so breadth of relevant content beats depth on one idea. A student optimising for the wrong model in half their papers is losing marks nobody has explained to them.

How many marks is the Extended Essay worth across its criteria?+

Thirty-four in total, across five criteria: focus and method worth 6, knowledge and understanding worth 6, critical thinking worth 12, presentation worth 4, and engagement worth 6. Critical thinking alone is more than a third of the total, which should reorder how a family spends support hours: a plan focused on referencing and formatting is optimising a four-mark criterion while a twelve-mark one goes unaddressed. The highest-value work happens before writing, on whether the research question can be answered within 4,000 words with sources the student can actually reach.

How long is the Theory of Knowledge essay allowed to be?+

Commonly 1,600 words, written on a prescribed title and externally assessed against a single global criterion, with the exhibition carrying its own shorter commentary limit. Because the essay is judged as a whole against descriptors rather than by collecting points, length discipline and a genuine knowledge question matter more than coverage. The choice of prescribed title effectively sets the ceiling, and a weak choice cannot be recovered by later polishing, which makes title selection the cheapest high-value conversation available in the core. Confirm the current limits with your coordinator.

Where do Dubai DP students lose the most marks?+

In five patterns rather than across the syllabus. Command-term substitution, where evaluate is answered as explain and the top band is capped in every long response. Absent working in mathematics and quantitative sciences, which forfeits method marks and blocks follow-through. Partial statement in point-marked science questions, where two-thirds of an idea earns nothing. Coursework scope, where a research question too broad to control caps several criteria at once. And timing, both within a paper and across the programme, where a component is met for the first time in a mock. Each is visible on one marked script.

How many hours does it take to fix a command-term problem?+

Usually three to four sessions, which makes it one of the best-value interventions available because it affects the largest paper in most subjects. The method is mechanical: name the term, name what the examiner requires, write the structure down as a template with the number of elements, practise on six past questions sharing that term, then mix terms so the student has to identify which one they face. At a published mid-band rate of around AED 250 an hour that is roughly AED 750 to 1,000 in total, against a component that commonly carries 40% or more of a subject grade.

Should tutoring hours go on Paper 1 or Paper 2?+

Start from the weighting and from where the marks are actually being lost, not from which paper feels harder. In the sciences under the current guide Paper 2 commonly carries about 44% of the subject grade against Paper 1 at about 36%, and Paper 2 rewards reasoning expressed in stated steps, which is a technique problem rather than a content one. In mathematics the two papers together carry most of the grade, so method discipline serves both. Bring a marked script from each and look at the distribution of losses; that comparison settles the question in ten minutes.

Does going over a word limit cost marks in the Diploma?+

Effectively yes, because assessment stops at the stated limit and anything beyond it is not read. The frustrating part is that students who exceed a limit have usually worked harder than those who did not: a 5,000-word Extended Essay represents more effort than a 3,900-word one and is marked worse, because the sections most often cut off are the later ones where evaluation and conclusions live. The fix is structural and happens early, by designing a research question that can genuinely be answered within the limit rather than by trimming a finished draft.

How do I find my child's exact component weightings?+

Ask the school's IB coordinator or the subject teacher for the current subject guide reference and the assessment outline for your child's cohort. That is the authoritative source, because guides are revised and a revision can change the number of papers, the internal assessment task and the weightings themselves. Every figure on this page carries that caution for the same reason. Once you have the real weightings, the planning question becomes straightforward: which component carries the most marks, where is my child losing them, and what is the shortest intervention that addresses that specific loss.

Start from the weighting, then buy the hours

An IB DP tutor in Dubai earns their rate by working from the mark map: which component carries the marks, which criterion has no evidence in the draft, and which of five loss patterns the marked script shows. Get your child's current weightings from their coordinator, then look at a marked paper against them. IB Gram runs a free first lesson built around that script, states the component affected and a rough number of hours, and delivers one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.
