IB TOK Essay Help in the UAE

IB TOK essay help in the UAE, delivered as one-to-one lessons over live video rather than a visit to a UAE address. Theory of Knowledge is the one Diploma component a parent cannot easily measure: there is no past-paper mark to compare, the title arrives from the IB, and the person supervising the work is usually a teacher at your child's own school. This page sets out who may be paid to help, what the grade is worth in points, and where the deadline falls inside a UAE school year.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never sentences supplied for them

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

Why Theory of Knowledge is the hardest Diploma component for a UAE parent to judge

Every other Diploma subject gives a parent something to hold. There is a past paper, a mark out of a known total, a grade boundary somewhere behind it. Theory of Knowledge gives you none of that. The student picks one of six titles the IB releases for the session, argues about how knowledge is produced and justified in two or three areas of knowledge, and submits 1,600 words that an examiner outside the school reads once. There is no retake paper in June and no second attempt in the same session. A family that notices a problem in March is already late.

In the UAE this sits inside a school system with its own layers. Your child's school is licensed by KHDA in Dubai, by ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, by the Sharjah Private Education Authority in Sharjah, by the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and by the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Those authorities approve the curriculum the school may teach and, in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, the assessment methods and fees as well. None of them marks a TOK essay. The IB does. So the regulator that governs the building has no say over the grade, while it does govern who inside the building may be paid to help with it.

That gap is where most of the confusion in this search sits. The teacher who supervises the TOK essay is, by design, a member of staff at the school. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the code of conduct attached to the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries the same restriction. The obvious person to ask for extra help is therefore the one person who cannot be paid for it. Parents who do not know this often spend a term asking the wrong question.

What a paid tutor can legitimately do is narrower than the essay-writing sites in this search suggest, and more useful than most families expect. A TOK session is spent on the student's own argument: whether the title has actually been answered, whether the two areas of knowledge are doing different work, whether a claim has a counterclaim that survives, whether the examples are specific enough to carry an argument rather than decorate one. The student types every word. The tutor reads, questions and sends the draft back harder than it arrived.

IB Gram runs this as one-to-one online TOK tuition in the UAE. Lessons happen over live video in Gulf Standard Time, screen-shared on the student's document, and there is no tutor travelling to a UAE address at any point. That is a deliberate model rather than a limitation: a TOK specialist who has supervised essays across several cohorts is rare in any one emirate, and a family in Al Ain or Fujairah should not be restricted to whoever happens to live within a workable drive.

At a glance

  • The TOK essay is externally marked; the TOK exhibition is marked inside the school and moderated
  • An E in TOK is a failing condition for the whole Diploma, regardless of subject points
  • TOK and the Extended Essay together contribute up to three points through the DP core points matrix
  • Your child's own TOK teacher is generally barred from being paid to tutor them privately
  • Lessons here are online and one-to-one; nothing is delivered at a UAE address

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Theory of Knowledge belongs to the Diploma Programme, but the habits it assesses are built earlier. Families usually arrive at TOK with a child who has come through the MYP in the same school, or who transferred into DP1 from a British or American system and has never been asked to argue about knowledge at all. The programme notes below describe where each one leaves a student.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma carries three core components beside the six subjects: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. TOK is taught across both years, with a recommended 100 hours of teaching time, and is assessed twice: an exhibition of three objects with a written commentary inside the school, and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title read by an external examiner. The TOK grade is reported as a letter from A to E. It does not sit in the 42 subject points; it feeds the three additional points instead.

UAE Diploma cohorts are small relative to the school. Dubai's private sector enrolled 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with the IB accounting for 7% of enrolment, so a school with three hundred DP students may still run TOK with a single teacher and no specialist cover. Three of the seven schools joining Dubai's 2026-27 intake are IB schools, which means more first-cohort TOK teaching, not less. Ask the DP coordinator how many sessions that teacher has taken an essay through before you decide whether outside help is proportionate.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP has no TOK, but it has the two things TOK depends on: interdisciplinary units that ask a student to hold two subject lenses at once, and the Personal Project in the final year, which is the first piece of extended independent work most IB students produce. Students arrive in DP1 from the MYP already used to criterion-referenced marking and to a supervisor who comments on process rather than content. What they usually lack is practice at sustaining a single argument for 1,600 words.

Several UAE schools run the full IB continuum, so a student may have been in the same building since PYP. That continuity helps with the vocabulary and hurts with the examples: a cohort taught by the same staff for a decade tends to reach for the same three case studies in every essay. Where a student has moved into the UAE mid-MYP from a national system, the gap is usually the opposite one, and the first few sessions go on reading an argument rather than summarising a source.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs DP courses with a career-related study and its own core, which includes Personal and Professional Skills, a reflective project and a language development component. CP students do not sit Theory of Knowledge and do not submit a TOK essay. Families sometimes assume otherwise because the two programmes share a timetable and a coordinator. If your child is on the CP, the reflective project is the piece of extended writing that needs supervision, and the ethical dilemma at its centre is the part that most often goes thin.

The CP is offered by a small number of UAE schools and is easy to confuse with the Diploma when both run in the same year group. Before booking anything, check the programme on the report card rather than the school's prospectus. A parent who buys TOK support for a CP student has bought the wrong thing; a parent who buys reflective-project supervision for a DP student has bought the wrong thing in the other direction.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP ends with the Exhibition, a collaborative inquiry presented at the close of Year 6. It is not assessed by the IB and carries no grade, but it is where a student first meets the idea that a question can be better or worse than another question. The transferable skill is the one TOK examiners reward six years later: treating a claim as something that needs justification rather than something to be reported accurately.

Most UAE families meet the IB at this stage and make a continuum decision here without knowing TOK exists. Worth knowing early: the subjects KHDA requires alongside the licensed curriculum, Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies, start in primary and run on into DP, so the timetable pressure a DP2 student feels in the TOK drafting weeks was built into the week years before.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

TOK is organised around a compulsory core theme, five areas of knowledge and a choice of two optional themes. The essay has to draw on areas of knowledge, so the pairing a student chooses decides most of what the argument can do. The notes below say what each one gives an essay and where students run out of material.

Knowledge and the Knower

Compulsory core theme

The core theme every TOK course teaches: how a person's position, communities and assumptions shape what they take to be known. It is the richest source of material for the exhibition and the thinnest for the essay, because a prescribed title asks about areas of knowledge, not about the student. Essays that stay in the core theme tend to describe perspective rather than argue with it.

Natural Sciences

Area of knowledge

The default choice, and the one examiners see most. It offers method, replication, peer review and paradigm change, so counterclaims are easy to construct. The failure mode is a student with HL Chemistry writing a chemistry lesson: the essay explains the science accurately and never asks how the knowledge was justified. Specificity helps here, including a named study with a date and a dispute attached to it.

Human Sciences

Area of knowledge

Economics, psychology and geography students usually have the strongest examples and the weakest framing. Human sciences give an essay measurement problems, model dependence and the difficulty of controlled study in a social setting. Paired with natural sciences it produces a contrast that collapses easily into a ranking exercise, so the pairing needs a reason beyond convenience.

History

Area of knowledge

History carries evidence, selection and the problem of writing about what cannot be observed directly. It is the strongest partner for almost any title because it makes the role of the knower visible without leaving the area of knowledge. Students taking DP History have the examples; students who are not often reach for a single war and no historiography at all.

Mathematics

Area of knowledge

The most powerful and most mishandled area of knowledge. Mathematics lets a student argue about proof, axioms, certainty and whether mathematical objects are discovered or invented. It fails when the essay confuses being certain with being true, or treats a worked calculation as evidence. Analysis and Approaches students handle this better than Applications and Interpretation students, mostly because proof appears on their syllabus.

The Arts

Area of knowledge

The arts give an essay interpretation, intention, convention and the question of whether a work can be wrong. Students who take Visual Arts, Music or Theatre have real material; students who do not tend to write about a single painting in general terms. Used as the second area of knowledge against the sciences, it produces the sharpest contrasts available in TOK.

Knowledge and Technology

Optional theme

Covers algorithmic recommendation, data, automation and the place of machine-produced output in what counts as knowing. The most current of the optional themes and the easiest to fill with opinion. An essay drawing on it needs a concrete mechanism, not a general worry about screens, and it should still route its argument through an area of knowledge.

Knowledge and Language

Optional theme

Translation, metaphor, framing and the limits of what a vocabulary allows a person to say. Useful to bilingual students, who have direct evidence that a concept can survive one language and not another. In a UAE classroom with Arabic, English and often a third home language in the same room, this theme produces examples no textbook supplies.

Knowledge and Politics

Optional theme

Authority, expertise, propaganda and who is permitted to speak for a body of knowledge. It gives an essay real traction on justification and consensus. It also tempts students into contemporary commentary, which examiners read as assertion. Sessions on this theme spend most of their time converting a political example into a knowledge question.

Knowledge and Religion

Optional theme

Faith, revelation, interpretation of texts and the relationship between religious and empirical knowledge. Taught carefully it is one of the strongest themes for an essay about certainty and justification. Students who have studied Islamic Education alongside their licensed curriculum often bring a more precise account of interpretive tradition than the theme's reading list expects.

Knowledge and Indigenous Societies

Optional theme

Oral transmission, custodianship, place-based knowledge and what happens when knowledge is recorded by someone outside the community that holds it. Rarely chosen and therefore rarely seen by examiners. It rewards a student willing to read properly and punishes one looking for a quick second theme.

Extended Essay

DP core, 4,000 words

Not part of TOK, but assessed on the same core and graded on the same A to E scale, and the two grades are read together in the points matrix. Families almost always need both supervised in the same year. Extended Essay supervision is a separate piece of work with a separate supervisor, a separate reflection form and a different kind of research question.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

TOK support works in blocks rather than as an open-ended weekly slot, because the task has a fixed shape and a fixed end date. All four formats below run one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the student sharing their own document on screen. Nothing is delivered at a UAE address.

Title selection block

Two or three sessions in the fortnight after the IB releases the prescribed titles for the session. The student arrives having read all six; the work is deciding which one their course and their examples can actually sustain for 1,600 words. Most students pick the title that sounds most interesting rather than the one they have material for, and that choice is responsible for more lost marks than anything that happens afterwards.

  • All six titles read closely and ranked against the two optional themes the school teaches
  • Each candidate title tested against areas of knowledge the student has real examples in
  • A knowledge question drafted for the shortlisted titles, not a thesis statement
  • Written back to the school supervisor as the student's own reasoning

Weekly argument clinic

A recurring one-hour session through the drafting period. Each week the student brings what they have and defends it out loud. The tutor asks where the counterclaim is, which area of knowledge is doing the work in this paragraph, and whether the example would survive a reader who disagreed. No text is supplied; the student leaves with questions and rewrites between sessions.

  • One hour weekly, same slot, through the drafting weeks
  • Student talks first and defends the current structure
  • Notes sent after each session as questions rather than corrections
  • Word count tracked against the TOK essay word limit from the first draft onwards

Pre-submission read

A single longer session two to four weeks before the school's internal deadline, used on a complete draft. The read checks that the title has been answered rather than approached, that both areas of knowledge are load-bearing, that every example is specific, and that the citation and word-count requirements are met. It complements the school's formal comment rather than replacing it.

  • Whole draft read before the session, annotated as questions
  • Title-answered test applied paragraph by paragraph
  • Citations and the 1,600-word limit checked against the current requirements
  • A written summary the student can take to their supervisor

Core pairing: TOK with the Extended Essay

Families who need both supervised in the same year usually want one tutor who can see how the two pieces interact, because the grades are read together in the points matrix and the deadlines sit weeks apart. The block alternates between the two, with the planning sequence for each kept separate so the reflection records stay honest.

  • Alternating sessions across the two core components
  • One shared calendar counted back from the earlier of the two deadlines
  • Separate reflection and planning records, never merged
  • A realistic view of which grade is still movable and which is not

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What searching for IB TOK essay help in the UAE should get you

  • Ask how many TOK sessions the tutor has supervised essays through
  • Ask for the permit position of anyone tutoring from inside the UAE
  • Ask whether session notes are questions or supplied text
  • Ask what happens to the arrangement if the school raises a concern

A legitimate TOK service does three things: it helps a student choose a prescribed title they can sustain, it interrogates the argument while there is still time to change it, and it reads a complete draft against the assessment requirements before the school's internal deadline. It does not supply paragraphs, rewrite sentences in the student's name, or hand over a finished piece of work. Everything in this search that offers the last three is offering the student an academic misconduct investigation.

The distinction matters more in TOK than anywhere else in the Diploma, because the essay is unsupervised writing on an abstract question and therefore the easiest component to buy. Sites in this market sell completed Diploma coursework outright, at prices that sit above what a term of honest supervision costs. The IB treats submitted work that is not the student's own as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate, not the vendor. No tutoring arrangement is worth that exposure.

What a UAE family should be checking is narrower and more practical. Who is the person in the session, and have they taken a TOK essay through a full session before? Do they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit if they are tutoring from inside the UAE? Will the written output of each session be questions addressed to the student, or text the student could paste? Does the provider accept that the school supervisor remains the person the IB holds responsible for the process?

IB Gram answers all four in writing before a family pays anything. Lessons are one-to-one online TOK tuition in the UAE, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial lesson first and no card details collected at that stage. There is no office in the UAE and no tutor travelling anywhere; what you are buying is an hour of a specialist's attention on your child's own argument.

02

The two TOK tasks, and which one a tutor can legitimately touch

Theory of Knowledge is assessed twice, and the two tasks behave completely differently. The exhibition is internal: the student selects three objects, writes a commentary connecting each to one of the IB's internal-assessment prompts, and the school marks it before the IB moderates a sample. The essay is external: one of six prescribed titles released by the IB for that session, 1,600 words, read by an examiner who has never met the student. The exhibition carries one third of the TOK grade and the essay two thirds.

The practical consequence is that the exhibition is the earlier and more forgiving of the two. It is produced in DP1 in most schools, the prompts are published in advance, and the teacher who marks it will have explained what a strong commentary looks like. By the time a family starts searching for help, the exhibition is usually finished and the mark is already in. What remains movable is the essay, which is why almost every enquiry we take on this page is about the essay specifically.

Both tasks are documented through a planning and progress record that the student completes with their supervisor. The IB requires a set number of documented interactions for the essay, with comments from both the student and the supervisor, and the form is submitted alongside the work. This is the mechanism that makes buying an essay detectable: a submitted piece that bears no relationship to the recorded planning sequence is exactly what a moderator looks for.

A paid tutor works inside that structure rather than around it. The student's recorded interactions remain with the school supervisor. Outside sessions are additional practice on the student's own thinking, and the student should be able to describe, in their own words, what changed between drafts and why. If they cannot, the help was the wrong kind. Confirm the current requirement counts and deadlines with your school's DP coordinator, because the IB updates its assessment procedures between sessions.

03

What the TOK grade is actually worth in Diploma points

TOK does not score points of its own. The six subjects provide up to 42 points, and the TOK and Extended Essay grades are read together against a matrix that awards between zero and three additional points, for a maximum of 45. A student needs 24 points for the Diploma to be awarded, alongside a set of conditions that the points total alone does not capture.

The matrix is where parents misjudge the stakes in both directions. A family that treats TOK as decorative is wrong: moving from a C to an A, with a B in the Extended Essay, is the difference between one point and three, and a single point regularly separates an offer from a near miss. A family that panics is also wrong: moving TOK from a C to a B, with a C in the Extended Essay, moves nothing at all. Which cell you are sitting in decides whether more support is worth buying.

The hard edge is the E. A grade E in either TOK or the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the Diploma. A student can hold 38 subject points and still leave with Course Results rather than a Diploma, and that distinction is exactly the one a Ministry of Education equivalency file turns on. This is the single most important fact on this page for a UAE family, because the equivalency route for a Diploma student assumes an awarded Diploma.

Read the matrix below with your child's current predicted grades in front of you, then ask the coordinator what the school's internal TOK marks have looked like against final IB grades in past sessions. Schools vary in how generously they mark exhibitions, and a school that has run the Diploma for two years has less calibration than one that has run it for fifteen. Confirm the matrix against the IB's current assessment procedures before making a decision on it.

Who at a UAE school may be paid to help, and who may not

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated. The route is a private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through MoHRE, which lists teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students among those eligible to apply. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

The restriction that matters for TOK is not about the permit itself. The ADEK professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the code of conduct attached to the MoHRE permit carries the same bar. Your child's TOK teacher is also their essay supervisor. That person cannot be engaged privately, and a provider that offers to arrange it is proposing something a parent should refuse. These rules are press-reported, so ask the school to confirm its own policy in writing.

A school that wants to go further than individual permits, by running a tuition centre with premises and staff, needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute in Dubai, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested ahead of expiry. That is a different legal animal from one tutor with a permit, and the two are frequently conflated in this search. Nobody should describe themselves as approved by a regulator on the strength of the wrong one.

IB Gram holds no permit, licence, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no page here will tell you otherwise. What the platform does is match a family to a tutor and state plainly where that tutor is based and what their position is. You can verify an individual permit through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Academic honesty: the line each person stands on

IB academic honesty rules are not vague about TOK. The essay must be the student's own response to the prescribed title, with sources acknowledged, and the supervisor's role is to guide the process and comment formally a limited number of times. A parent may discuss ideas at the dinner table. A tutor may question an argument until it breaks. Neither may put a sentence into the document, and neither may restructure a paragraph so that the student is submitting someone else's reasoning in their own voice.

The grey area families worry about is proofreading. The safe position is that the student fixes their own errors after someone points to where errors exist. Marking a sentence as unclear is teaching; replacing it is not. The same logic governs structure: telling a student that their second area of knowledge appears only in the final paragraph is feedback, and moving it for them is not. The test we apply in sessions is whether the student could explain every change to their supervisor without help.

This is also where a parent can usefully be sceptical about any provider's written output. If a session produces a document the student could paste, the provider has crossed the line regardless of what the invoice says. Our session notes are deliberately useless as text: they are questions, page references and one-line observations, because that is what survives an academic honesty conversation and what actually improves a draft.

If a school does raise a concern about outside support, the honest response is complete disclosure: who the tutor is, what the sessions covered, and what the student changed afterwards. A family that has kept the supervisor informed from the start never reaches that point. Tell the coordinator in DP1 that your child is working with an outside tutor; in our experience schools treat that as responsible rather than suspicious, and it removes the only real risk in the arrangement.

Counting back from submission inside a UAE school year

The TOK essay fails on timing more often than on ability. The prescribed titles are released months ahead of submission, the school sets an internal deadline well before the IB's, and the drafting period lands squarely in the stretch when Diploma students are also finishing subject explorations and sitting mocks. A student who starts late is choosing a title they have no examples for, in the week they have least time to find any.

We publish this calendar in weeks rather than dates on purpose. IB session and results dates are set by the IB and are revised between sessions, and no date in this project has been confirmed against ibo.org, which blocks automated checking. Get the actual dates from your school's DP coordinator or the IB's own assessment pages, then map them onto the sequence below. The relative spacing is what matters and it is stable across sessions.

The UAE school year adds two local complications. The first is that the mandatory subjects KHDA and the other authorities require, Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies, occupy timetabled periods that a DP2 student cannot drop, so the free hours in a week are fewer than a parent counting six subjects would assume. The second is Ramadan, which shortens the school day and shifts the usable study hours to after Iftar in the year it falls across the drafting window.

Work backwards from the school's internal deadline rather than the IB's, because the internal one is the one your child will actually be held to and it is usually several weeks earlier. Then put the pre-submission read two to four weeks before it, so there is still room to act on what the read finds. A complete draft that arrives three days before the deadline can be corrected for clarity and nothing else.

Where TOK drafting meets the mandatory UAE subjects

  • Count mandatory subject periods out of the week before planning study hours
  • Separate class requirements mean these periods cannot be merged or dropped
  • Instructional time is built on a 40-minute lesson unit, with weekly totals fixed
  • Bilingual students have real material for the language and religion themes

Private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a specific national curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but they must follow the Ministry's general regulations, and each emirate authority applies that federally. In Dubai, KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies in all private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with its current requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

KHDA's mandatory subjects guidance is unusually specific about how that time is organised. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary the lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and the advice is that no mandatory subject lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and social studies, and combined classes for both groups are not permitted because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ.

For a DP2 student in the TOK drafting weeks, this is a timetable fact rather than a policy debate. Those periods are fixed, they are graded on the school report, and they cannot be traded for study time. A parent working out how many hours a week are genuinely available for essay work should count them out first. It is also why evening sessions in Gulf Standard Time, rather than daytime slots, are what families here actually book.

There is an upside worth naming. Students who have studied Arabic as a first language or Islamic Education alongside their licensed curriculum arrive at the knowledge and language and knowledge and religion themes with concrete material: direct experience of a concept that does not survive translation, or of an interpretive tradition with its own standards of justification. Examiners reward specific examples, and these are specific in a way a generic reading list is not.

What DP core support costs in the UAE market

Three of the six pages competing for this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. The figures below are market bands, published by the providers named, checked in October 2026. They are not IB Gram's prices: what a session costs here is quoted after the free consultation, because it depends on the specialist, the session length and how many weeks are left before the deadline.

Read the bands as a description of who is in the room rather than a quality ranking. At the bottom of the market the hour is usually a university student doing content revision, which is a reasonable purchase for a subject gap and the wrong purchase for a core component with an external examiner. At the top, named and examiner-led providers publish rates several times higher. TOK supervision sits in the middle of the market because the work is argument-level teaching, and the useful question is how many hours it takes, not what an hour costs.

Blocks are more honest than hourly rates for this component. A title-selection block is two or three sessions. A weekly clinic through the drafting period is six to ten. A pre-submission read is one longer session. Most UAE families we work with on TOK buy somewhere between eight and fourteen hours across the whole cycle, which is a very different number from an open-ended weekly subject slot running for two years.

Set that against the wider cost picture. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. School fees are the fixed cost in a Diploma family's year; core supervision is the variable one, and it is bought in a window a few months wide rather than across two years. Ask any provider to quote the block, not the hour.

Ramadan, term dates and where drafting actually fits

In the years when Ramadan falls across the spring term, it lands on the part of the Diploma calendar where TOK drafting and subject explorations overlap. School days are shortened, the usable concentration hours move to the evening, and a family that keeps a 4pm session in place through the month is usually paying for an hour nobody is present for. The sessions that work are after Iftar, and they are shorter.

Plan the month rather than cancel it. A sensible pattern is to front-load the structural work before Ramadan begins, hold one shorter weekly session at a post-Iftar time through the month, and schedule the pre-submission read for the week after. The structural decisions, which title, which areas of knowledge, which examples, are the ones that need a clear head; checking citations and trimming to the word limit does not.

The rest of the UAE calendar has its own rhythm worth planning around. The winter break sits in the middle of the drafting period for most DP2 cohorts and is the single largest uninterrupted block of time a student will get before submission. Families who travel over that break should decide in advance whether sessions follow them across time zones, because an online schedule can, and a two-week gap at that point is expensive to recover from.

One practical note on scheduling: everything here is timed to Gulf Standard Time and confirmed slot by slot, and a tutor in another time zone is matched to a slot that works for the student rather than for the tutor. Where a specialist genuinely cannot cover a time, we say so at the consultation instead of booking a session nobody can keep.

Ministry of Education equivalency, the Diploma and TOK

  • Equivalency turns on the certificate awarded, not on individual core grades
  • The British track requires five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at E or grade 3 or above
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count of five
  • No IB points threshold is published here; verify it on moe.gov.ae

Families ask whether TOK counts towards Ministry of Education equivalency. The honest answer is that equivalency is assessed on the certificate a student holds, not on individual core components, and the published requirements differ by curriculum track. For the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade no lower than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not among the five required subjects, a point one ranking competitor publishes incorrectly as a six-subject rule.

For the American track, the published English requirement is a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, with mathematics requiring at least 450 in the SAT Math test. No IB points threshold appears in the source we read, so this page publishes none. Any figure you see quoted for the IB should be checked on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate before you plan around it.

Where TOK does matter to equivalency is indirectly, and decisively. The route for a Diploma student assumes a Diploma that has actually been awarded. A grade E in TOK is a failing condition, so a student in that position holds Course Results rather than the Diploma, and the equivalency file they open is a different file. That is the clearest financial argument on this page for taking a borderline TOK grade seriously in DP1 rather than DP2.

Equivalency is also not something a tutoring provider performs. IB Gram does not submit, process or guarantee an equivalency or attestation file, and nobody should offer to. Describe it, verify it at the source, and use the official channel. Tutoring is not required for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression, and any provider suggesting otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process.

Where we tutor

TOK essay support across the seven emirates

The TOK essay is the same task everywhere. What changes by emirate is which authority licenses the school, which rules govern the person helping, and what the school week looks like around the drafting period. Online delivery is what makes the same specialist reachable from Umm Al Quwain and from Dubai Marina at the same session time.

Dubai

KHDA licenses 227 private schools here and publishes an inspection report for each. It also sets the mandatory subject requirements that sit beside the IB, and confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27. Dubai has the deepest DP cohort in the country and the longest queue for its TOK teachers in February.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and sets professional-ethics rules for school staff that restrict paid private tutoring of a teacher's own students. Diploma families here are the most likely to discover that the supervisor they trust is the one person who cannot be engaged privately.

Al Ain

Also ADEK, which surprises families who assume a separate Al Ain authority. The practical difference is distance: DP cohorts are smaller, specialist TOK teaching is thinner, and a student wanting a second reader has fewer options inside a reasonable radius. Online sessions remove the radius from the decision entirely.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Term rhythms here differ from Dubai's in practice, and families often want TOK drafting sessions placed later in the evening than a Dubai family would choose.

Ajman

Private schools here are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority. Fewer schools run the full Diploma, so a DP2 student may be one of a handful taking TOK in the building, with no second teacher to read a draft and no peer group to argue with.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like Sharjah's authority, approves curricula and assessment methods. RAK appears in none of the competing pages in this search, which is a reasonable signal of how much attention Diploma families here get from tutoring providers.

Fujairah

Supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. The commute between Fujairah and the Dubai-Sharjah corridor is the single biggest constraint on anything delivered in person, which is why an online model changes the available tutor pool here more than anywhere else in the country.

Umm Al Quwain

Also under the federal Ministry of Education, and the smallest private-school market in the UAE. A family here looking for someone who has taken TOK essays through more than one session is looking outside the emirate by definition, and almost certainly outside the country.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai IB schools

Diploma cohorts in Dubai are large enough that TOK is usually timetabled properly and taught by someone who has done it before. The pressure point is February and March, when every DP2 student in the building wants supervisor time in the same fortnight and the one TOK teacher is also marking exhibitions.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain IB schools

ADEK's ethics rules bite hardest here, because the schools below are the ones whose staff a parent would naturally approach first. Students we support from these schools come to us for a second reader on a draft, not for a replacement for the supervisor the IB requires them to work with.

Schools are named here only as context for the UAE Diploma picture; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any school, authority or examination board named on this page, and programme authorisations change, so check the IB's own school directory before relying on any name above.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us where the essay actually is

The first conversation establishes four things: which session the student is entered for, whether the titles have been released, what the school's internal deadline is, and which two optional themes the course covered. That is enough to say honestly whether a block of sessions can still change the outcome or whether the realistic target is the Extended Essay instead.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, on the real work

One trial lesson before any payment, with no card details collected. The student brings whatever exists, even if that is only a shortlist of titles, and the hour is spent on it rather than on a diagnostic test. Parents are welcome to sit in. If the match is wrong, the consultation suggests another specialist or says plainly that we do not have one free.

  3. 03

Agree the block and the calendar

Sessions are booked as a block counted back from the school's internal deadline, not as an open weekly slot. You see how many hours the block is, what each session is for, and where the pre-submission read sits. Slots are confirmed in Gulf Standard Time, and the schedule is written down so a missed week is visible immediately.

  4. 04

    Tell the school

We ask families to let the DP coordinator know that outside support is in place. It takes one email, it removes the only genuine risk in the arrangement, and in our experience schools read it as responsible. The supervisor keeps the recorded interactions the IB requires; outside sessions are additional practice on the student's own thinking.

  5. 05

    Work in questions, not corrections

Each session the student defends the current draft out loud and leaves with questions rather than edits. Session notes are page references and one-line observations, deliberately unusable as text. Between sessions the student revises their own document, and the next hour starts with what changed and why.

  6. 06

    Stop at the right point

The block ends after the pre-submission read, with two to four weeks still in hand. Submission is between the student, the supervisor and the coordinator, and no tutor is involved in it. If the family wants to continue into Extended Essay supervision or a subject, that is a new conversation with its own calendar.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A specialist, not whoever is nearby

TOK supervision experience is thin in any single emirate, and thinnest in Al Ain, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Delivering one-to-one online removes distance from the match, so a family outside the Dubai corridor gets the same specialist a Dubai family would, at a session time that suits the student rather than a driving route.

The honesty line is written down

What a tutor may and may not do with a draft is set out on this page as a table, not buried in terms. The student types every word, session notes are questions, and the school supervisor keeps the recorded interactions the IB requires. That position is what makes the help usable if a school ever asks about it.

No regulator borrowed for credibility

IB Gram claims no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. The pages here explain what those bodies do and point to their own sites. A provider that implies endorsement it does not hold is telling you something about the rest of its claims.

Market rates shown, with sources

The AED bands on this page are other providers' published figures with the provider and the month of checking named, so you can price a block against the market rather than against a sales call. Our own number is quoted after the consultation, because it depends on the specialist and how many weeks are left.

Blocks with an end date

TOK work has a deadline, so it is sold as a block counted backwards from the school's internal date rather than as a subscription. Most cycles run between eight and fourteen hours in total. You know the number before you start, and the block ends while there is still time to act on the final read.

Availability stated before you pay

If no TOK specialist is free at your session times, the consultation says so and offers either a different slot or nothing. The alternative, which is common in this market, is a general essay tutor booked against a core component with an external examiner, and that costs a family a term they cannot get back.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Does the school choose the TOK prescribed title, or does the student?+

The student chooses. The IB releases six prescribed titles for each session and the candidate responds to one of them, using the exact wording as issued. A school may discuss the titles in class and a supervisor will explain what each is asking for, but the choice and the justification belong to the student. This is the decision that most affects the final mark, because a title with no usable examples behind it cannot be rescued later by better writing. Spend real time on it: read all six, test each against the areas of knowledge your child actually has material in, then decide.

Can the teacher who supervises the TOK essay also be paid to tutor my child privately?+

Generally not. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the code of conduct attached to the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries the same restriction for teachers tutoring outside school hours. Since the TOK supervisor is by definition a member of staff at your child's school, that person is the one person who cannot be engaged privately. These rules are press-reported rather than quoted here from the policy document, so ask your school to confirm its own position in writing, and treat any provider offering to arrange it as a warning sign.

What is the planning and progress record, and why does it matter to a parent?+

It is the form on which a student records their documented interactions with the TOK essay supervisor, with comments from both the student and the supervisor, submitted alongside the essay. It is not separately graded. It matters because it is the mechanism that makes a bought essay visible: a submitted piece bearing no relationship to the recorded planning sequence is precisely what a moderator looks for. For a family using outside support, the form is also the reason to keep the school informed, since the recorded interactions stay with the supervisor and outside sessions are additional practice rather than a substitute.

Our son's predicted TOK grade is a D. Is it worth paying to move it?+

Look at the Extended Essay prediction before deciding. Under the DP core points matrix, a D in TOK with an A in the Extended Essay gives two points, and moving TOK to a B would give three. The same D with a C in the Extended Essay gives nothing, and moving TOK to a B gives one point. Whether a block of sessions is worth buying depends entirely on which cell you are in. The exception is a predicted E, which is a failing condition for the whole Diploma regardless of subject points, and that is always worth addressing immediately.

Does a tutor need a MoHRE permit to review a TOK draft over video?+

If the tutor lives and works in the UAE and is paid for private tuition, the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 applies, and it is issued through MoHRE free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents and university students. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. For a tutor living outside the UAE, MoHRE's eligibility list addresses people in the country, so ask MoHRE about any other arrangement.

Which two optional themes make the essay easier to argue?+

Your child does not choose: the school teaches two optional themes and those are the ones the course covered. Knowledge and technology and knowledge and language are the most commonly taught and give an essay accessible material. Knowledge and politics and knowledge and religion reward careful reading and punish opinion. Knowledge and indigenous societies is rarely chosen and therefore rarely seen by examiners, which helps a student willing to read properly. Whichever two your school taught, remember that prescribed titles ask about areas of knowledge, so the themes are a source of examples rather than the backbone of the argument.

Is TOK counted anywhere in a UAE Ministry of Education equivalency file?+

Equivalency is assessed on the certificate a student holds rather than on individual core components, so TOK is not counted as a subject. It matters indirectly and seriously: a grade E in TOK is a failing condition, which means the student is awarded Course Results rather than the Diploma, and the equivalency route for a Diploma student assumes an awarded Diploma. No IB points threshold is published on this page because the source we read states none; verify any figure on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate. IB Gram does not submit, process or guarantee an equivalency file.

How early in DP1 should TOK work start, and what should it look like?+

Earlier than most families think, and lighter than they expect. In DP1 the useful work is the exhibition and the habit of treating a claim as something needing justification, not essay drafting. A student who reaches the end of DP1 able to turn a political or scientific story into a knowledge question will find title selection straightforward. Essay-specific work begins when the IB releases the prescribed titles for the session, and the first block is title selection rather than writing. Starting in DP2 is possible but narrows what any support can achieve.

My daughter's school has no TOK teacher this term. What are our options?+

Tell the DP coordinator in writing and ask what interim supervision arrangements are in place, because the recorded interactions and the formal comment are school responsibilities that do not disappear with a staff absence. This happens most often in schools running their first or second Diploma cohort, and three of the seven schools joining Dubai's 2026-27 intake are IB schools, so first-cohort TOK teaching is becoming more common rather than less. Outside support can cover the argument-level teaching in the meantime, but it cannot replace the supervisor the IB requires, and no provider should claim otherwise.

Can a TOK essay be built around my child's own Diploma subjects?+

Yes, and the strongest essays usually are. A student taking HL History has historiography available; a student taking Analysis and Approaches has proof and axioms; a Visual Arts student can argue about interpretation with real works in front of them. The common failure is the opposite of abstraction: an HL Chemistry student writes an accurate chemistry explanation and never asks how the knowledge was justified. The subject supplies the example, the area of knowledge supplies the argument, and the examiner is marking the second of those.

What should I check before paying anyone to look at a TOK draft?+

Four things. Whether the person has taken a TOK essay through a complete session before, rather than written essays generally. Whether they hold a current MoHRE private tuition work permit if they are tutoring from inside the UAE. Whether the written output of a session is questions and page references, or text a student could paste. And whether they accept that the school supervisor remains the person the IB holds responsible. A provider offering a finished piece of work at any price is offering your child a malpractice investigation, and the consequence falls on the candidate.

Where does the TOK deadline fall against Ramadan and the UAE term dates?+

In years when Ramadan sits in the spring term, it overlaps the stretch where TOK drafting and subject explorations collide. School days shorten and usable study hours move to after Iftar, so a 4pm session through that month is usually an hour nobody is present for. Front-load the structural decisions before Ramadan, hold one shorter post-Iftar session weekly through it, and put the pre-submission read in the week afterwards. The winter break is the largest uninterrupted block before submission; decide in advance whether sessions follow a family that travels.

Will a KHDA or ADEK inspection report tell me whether a school teaches TOK well?+

Not directly. Inspection reports judge provision across a school and are published per school by the authority, but they do not grade individual Diploma core components, and a strong overall rating says nothing about how many sessions the TOK teacher has taken essays through. Read the report for context, then ask the coordinator the specific question: how long has this teacher taught TOK, and how have the school's internal exhibition marks compared with final IB grades? That answer is more useful for your decision than any band on the cover.

How many hours does a TOK essay cycle usually take, and what do UAE families pay?+

Most families we work with buy between eight and fourteen hours across the whole cycle: two or three sessions on title selection, six to ten in a weekly clinic through drafting, and one longer pre-submission read. That is a different purchase from an open weekly subject slot. For market context, published UAE rates run from AED 45-150 at the budget end, AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor, and AED 200-450 for a core specialist, as published by those providers and checked in October 2026. Our own figure is quoted after the free consultation.

Can the TOK exhibition mark still be improved once it has been submitted?+

No. The exhibition is marked inside the school and a sample is moderated by the IB, and once the school has submitted there is nothing a family or a tutor can change. If the exhibition mark is already in and disappointing, the useful response is to put the remaining effort into the essay, which carries two thirds of the TOK grade and is read by an external examiner. That is the single most common reason families reach this page in DP2 rather than DP1, and it is a reasonable reason to start.

My son writes well in English but keeps scoring badly in TOK. Why?+

Because TOK is not marked on writing quality. A fluent essay that describes two perspectives, reports what people believe and reaches a balanced conclusion is doing the wrong task well. The examiner is looking for an argument about how knowledge is produced and justified, with claims that have counterclaims strong enough to be a genuine problem, and specific examples carrying the argument rather than illustrating it. Strong writers are often the hardest students to redirect, because the draft reads convincingly and nothing looks broken. The fix is structural and it takes several sessions.

Do lessons ever happen in person anywhere in the UAE?+

No. Every lesson for a UAE family runs one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the student sharing their own document on screen. IB Gram has no office, centre or branch in the UAE, and home visits are offered only in India. For TOK specifically the online model is an advantage rather than a compromise: supervision experience in this component is thin in any one emirate, and a family in Al Ain, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain gets the same specialist a Dubai family would, at a session time chosen for the student.

Start with the title, not the draft

If the prescribed titles for your child's session are out, the next useful hour is spent choosing between them against the examples they actually hold. If the titles are not out yet, the next useful hour is spent on the habit the examiner rewards: turning a claim into a question about how it was justified. Either way, book the free trial lesson, bring whatever exists, and let the session run on the real work. We will tell you honestly whether a block can still change the grade, which cell of the points matrix you are sitting in, and whether a specialist is genuinely free at your times. If not, we will say so rather than book you anyway.
