Switching From CBSE to IB in Dubai: What Actually Changes, Subject by Subject

The CBSE-to-IB gap is not difficulty, it is task type. Entry points ranked by risk, the maths placement that constrains the Diploma, and why the first Internal Assessment decides the year.

Switching from CBSE to IB in Dubai is sold as a step up in difficulty. It is not. It is a step sideways into a different kind of work, and the families who understand that in month one are the ones for whom it goes well. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is the second-largest curriculum presence in Dubai, with the Indian curricula accounting for 26% of the emirate's private school students. The International Baccalaureate (IB) accounts for 7%. A family moving a child from the first group to the second is making a bigger change than the brochures suggest, and the change is not mainly about difficulty. It is about what the system asks a student to produce.

The two slices that matter here are a quarter of the market and a fourteenth of it. That ratio is the practical constraint on the move: the receiving school set is small, which is why the entry-point question below has to be settled before anything else. Our shortlisting criteria for the programme are in the best IB schools in Dubai, and the curriculum comparison itself in IB against IGCSE against A-Level in the UAE.

A strong CBSE student is, by construction, good at a particular task: absorbing a defined syllabus and reproducing it accurately under time pressure in a written paper. An IB student is assessed on a different task: constructing an argument, designing an investigation, documenting a process, and defending a judgement — with a significant portion of the final grade awarded for work produced over weeks rather than in two and a half hours. Those are different skills, and the transition fails or succeeds on whether the family understood that in month one or month nine.

This article is for parents in Dubai considering or already executing a CBSE-to-IB move at Grade 8, 9, 10 or 11 equivalent. It works through what changes subject by subject, what the Ministry of Education's equivalency rules mean for the decision, what to do in the first term, and the specific places where a CBSE-trained student loses marks for reasons that have nothing to do with knowing less. Where a fact is regulatory, the authority is named. Where a figure could not be verified from an official source, that is stated rather than papered over.

Neither column is the easier one; they are different jobs. A student who is excellent at the left-hand column and has never been asked to do the right-hand column will look like a weaker student for one term, and it will have nothing to do with how much they know.

What Actually Changes: Assessment Design, Not Content Difficulty

The most useful thing to understand first is that CBSE and IB are not two points on a single difficulty scale. They optimise for different outputs.

CBSE mathematics at Grade 10 covers real content to real depth, and a student who has done it well is not behind an IB student in algebraic fluency — frequently the reverse. What that student has typically not done is write a 6-to-12-page mathematical exploration of their own choosing, marked against published criteria for mathematical communication, personal engagement and reflection. The gap is not knowledge. It is a task type the student has never been asked to perform.

The same shape repeats across subjects:

  • Sciences. CBSE practical work is typically prescribed and verified. An IB Diploma science Internal Assessment (IA) requires the student to design their own investigation, which includes framing a research question, choosing variables, justifying a method and evaluating the limitations of their own design. A student who has only ever followed a given practical procedure has to learn to author one.
  • Languages and literature. CBSE English rewards accurate, well-organised answers to set questions on prescribed texts. IB English A asks for analytical argument about how a text produces meaning, with the student selecting what is worth saying. Both are demanding; only one asks the student to choose the thesis.
  • Humanities. CBSE history and geography reward comprehensive, accurate coverage. IB history rewards evaluation of evidence, including the reliability and limitation of sources, and explicitly credits argument over coverage.
  • Mathematics. The content overlap is genuinely high at IGCSE and Middle Years Programme (MYP) level. The divergence appears in the exploration task and in the IB's expectation that a student can model an unfamiliar real-world situation rather than recognise a familiar question type.
Content knowledge in maths and sciencesusually a small gap, sometimes an advantage
Written exam techniquetransferable, needs reframing
Criterion-based marking literacythe largest single gap
Self-designed investigation and researchoften a task never previously attempted
Oral assessment and viva-style defencerarely practised in the prior system
Where the CBSE-to-IB gap actually sits, by task type

Those weights are an informed characterisation of the transition, drawn from the structural differences between the two assessment models, not a measured study. Treat them as a diagnostic map of where to look, not as data. The point they make is the one that matters: a family that spends the first term buying extra mathematics content is usually solving the smallest of the five problems.

The Four Entry Points, and Which One Your Child Is Actually Taking

"Switching to IB" means four quite different projects depending on when it happens. Confusing them is the commonest planning error in this transition.

Entry pointWhat the move actually isRisk levelThe dominant task to close
CBSE Grade 6-8 into MYP Years 1-3A genuine curriculum change with years to absorb itLowLearning to work to criteria and to inquiry-style tasks
CBSE Grade 9 into MYP Year 4Change plus the start of DP subject-choice pressureModerateCriteria, plus an early read on Higher Level viability
CBSE Grade 10 into MYP Year 5 or IGCSE Year 11A compressed change in an examination yearHighBoard-specific exam technique and syllabus reconciliation
CBSE Grade 10 or 11 into DP1The common route, and the one that works bestModerateInternal assessment literacy from a standing start

The fourth row deserves emphasis because it is both the most popular route and the most sensible one. A student who completes CBSE Grade 10, takes the board examination, and then enters DP1 arrives at a natural seam in both systems: CBSE Grade 10 is a terminal point, and DP1 is a genuine beginning with a fresh two-year cycle. Nothing is mid-flight. Compare that with moving into DP2, where the Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay (EE) and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay are already in progress against deadlines the receiving school did not set.

The third row is the one to think hard about. Moving a child mid-Grade-10 into an IGCSE Year 11 means arriving in an examination year with a syllabus the class has been covering for a year, under a board — Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel — whose paper structure is new to the student. If that is your situation, settle three things in writing before anything else: which board, which syllabus codes, and whether examination entries have already been made.

1Fix the entry pointConfirm in writing which programme year the receiving school will place your child in, and why
2Reconcile the syllabusAsk for a subject-by-subject statement of what the class has covered that your child has not
3Decode the markingGet the actual criteria or assessment rubrics the school marks against, before term one ends
4Plan the mathematics routeDecide between the MYP standard and extended routes, or AA and AI at Diploma, on evidence not instinct
5Diagnose at week fourUse first marked work to produce a written list of specific gaps, then buy support against that list
6Protect the first IATreat the first internally assessed piece as the teaching moment it is, not a grade to rescue
Executing a CBSE-to-IB move without losing a year

The Mathematics Decision That Follows a CBSE Student Into the Diploma

Of all the subject decisions in this transition, mathematics is where a CBSE background most changes the right answer, and where parents most often get advised badly.

Inside MYP, schools run mathematics at more than one level — a standard route and an extended route — and the placement made on arrival shapes what Diploma options remain open two years later. A CBSE Grade 8 or 9 student arriving with strong algebraic and arithmetic fluency is frequently a credible candidate for the extended route even if their first assessment is mediocre, because the first assessment is often measuring criterion literacy rather than mathematics. Placing such a student in the standard route on the strength of one criterion-marked task is a real risk, and it is a question worth asking directly: on what evidence was this placement made, and what is the route back up?

At Diploma level the decision becomes Analysis and Approaches (AA) against Applications and Interpretation (AI), each at Higher or Standard Level. This article will not tell you which to choose, because the honest answer depends on the intended degree and the universities in question, and those requirements are published by the universities themselves and change. What is worth saying is how a CBSE background bears on it. CBSE mathematics is algebra-and-calculus heavy and proof-adjacent in its habits, which tends to sit closer to the AA style of question than to AI's data-and-modelling emphasis. That is a tendency, not a rule, and it is a weaker argument than the actual course prerequisite for the degree your child wants. Check the prerequisite against each target university's own admissions pages, and read the dedicated treatment in IB Maths AA versus AI for UAE students before deciding.

Criterion letters and their mark allocations vary by programme and are published by the IB in the subject guides your school holds. We do not reproduce IB subject guides, syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes — ask your child's teacher for the criteria the school marks against, which they are able to share with you. Relevant starting points if support is needed: IB MYP mathematics tutoring in Dubai and, for the broader programme, IB MYP tutoring in Dubai.

One more structural difference that matters here, because it is where CBSE habits mislead most. A CBSE report is a percentage, and a percentage is continuous — one more mark is one more mark. An IB subject grade is one of seven bands, and criterion marks are converted into that band using boundaries that the IB sets per subject and per session. The practical consequence is that improvement is lumpy rather than smooth: several marks can change nothing at all, and then a small number of marks move the whole grade. That is why the written list of specific criteria matters more than a general instruction to work harder, and it is why a parent reading a 5 should ask how many raw marks sit between that 5 and a 6 rather than how many percent.

Grade 6 bandGrade 7 · ~70–85%

The gap between a 6 and a 7 is often 6–10 raw marks across three papers — roughly two marks per paper.

Illustrative only — the IB sets grade boundaries per subject and per session

The shape, not the numbers, is the point: the distance between two grades is usually a handful of marks spread across papers, which is a very different target from "raise the percentage". Students chasing the top band in mathematics specifically will find the mark-by-mark version in how to score a 7 in IB maths in Dubai, and the route decision itself at IB DP Maths AA HL tutoring in Dubai or IB DP Maths AI SL tutoring in Dubai.

Internal Assessment: The Component That Catches CBSE Students Out

If there is a single place where this transition succeeds or fails, it is the first Internal Assessment.

The structural facts are worth stating plainly. In the Diploma Programme, each subject carries an internally assessed component marked by the teacher against published criteria and then moderated by the IB. Alongside those sit the Extended Essay, an independent research piece with a supervisor, and the Theory of Knowledge essay. Together these are a substantial share of a Diploma student's final outcome, and they are produced over weeks against school-set internal deadlines rather than in an examination hall.

For a CBSE-trained student this is genuinely unfamiliar territory, and it fails in predictable ways:

Treating it as a project rather than an assessment. The IA is marked against specific criteria. A beautifully presented piece that does not address a criterion scores nothing for that criterion. The single most valuable hour a new IB student can spend is reading the criteria their work will be marked against and mapping their plan onto them.

Under-scoping or over-scoping the question. CBSE assignments come with defined boundaries. An IA requires the student to set the boundary. Research questions that are too broad to answer in the word count, or so narrow there is nothing to investigate, are the standard first-attempt failure.

Not documenting the process. Several criteria reward the reasoning and reflection, not just the result. A student trained to show the final answer neatly will submit a correct conclusion with the thinking stripped out, and lose marks for exactly the part they removed.

Correct formula quoted+1
Substitution shown+1
Correct manipulation+1
Final answer + units+1

Three of the four marks are gone before you ever reach the answer.

Method and reasoning are marked separately from the answer

That is the whole argument in one picture: the marks live in the working, not only in the result. A CBSE-trained student who has learned to present a clean final answer is, without realising it, deleting the part of the script that most of the credit is attached to. The same habit costs marks in the sciences, where the design and evaluation of an investigation are criteria in their own right — see IB DP Physics HL tutoring in Dubai, IB DP Chemistry HL tutoring in Dubai and IB DP Biology HL tutoring in Dubai — and in the humanities, where evaluation of evidence is credited above coverage, as at IB DP History tutoring in Dubai and IB DP Economics HL tutoring in Dubai.

Starting late. CBSE examination preparation rewards intensity near the deadline. An IA rewards iteration, which needs calendar time. This is a habit change, not an effort change.

And the failure that ends a student's Diploma. The IA, the EE and the TOK essay must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain what a criterion is asking for, model the technique on a different example, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor must not write it, rewrite it, or edit it to completion. Providers in this market do sell completed Internal Assessments; one offers them at a published price. Buying one is academic malpractice under IB rules, it risks the student's entire Diploma, and IB Gram does not supply it at any price and will decline the request. Legitimate support is described at IB Internal Assessment support in Dubai and IB Extended Essay support in Dubai, and both pages mean teaching and feedback, nothing else.

The first three figures describe the typical prior experience of a CBSE-trained joiner rather than a rule about CBSE, which does include practical and project work in various forms; verify against your own child's record. The Extended Essay length and the six-subject structure are standard features of the Diploma Programme — confirm the current word limit and requirements with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org, because specifications are revised.

The Language Question: What Happens to Hindi, and What Replaces It

A detail that catches Indian families mid-transition is the language requirement, which is structured differently from CBSE's.

The Diploma Programme requires a studies-in-language-and-literature subject and a language-acquisition subject, and schools offer specific options within each. Practically, this means a CBSE student who has studied Hindi as a second or third language has to establish what the receiving school actually offers and at which level, because the options are school-specific rather than universal. A school may offer Hindi B but not Hindi A, or may offer Hindi at Standard Level only. Where Hindi is available, support exists at IB DP Hindi B tutoring in Dubai and, at the IGCSE level, Cambridge IGCSE Hindi 0549 tutoring in Dubai.

Two further wrinkles specific to the UAE.

First, English. A CBSE student arriving into IB English A is moving from a comprehension-and-accuracy model to an analysis-and-argument model, and the gap is about the kind of writing expected rather than vocabulary. This is often the subject where a confident student's grade drops first and recovers last. The relevant page is IB DP English A language and literature tutoring in Dubai, and for students whose English is still developing as an additional language, IB DP English B tutoring in Dubai or Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510 tutoring in Dubai.

Second, Arabic. This has nothing to do with the curriculum change and everything to do with being in Dubai. KHDA's mandatory-subjects guidance requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and the federal position on u.ae is that private schools must provide Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies whatever curriculum they otherwise follow. If your child was already in a Dubai CBSE school, the Arabic requirement carries across unchanged and is not part of the transition. If the family is also arriving from India, it is new, and KHDA's requirement that classes for Arabs and non-Arabs be organised separately means the placement question matters.

Arabic

What to confirm before accepting a place
NothingWhich language options the receiving school actually runs, and at which levels
What happens to the language block when a CBSE student switches

The single actionable line in that table is the last one: language options are school-specific, not programme-wide, so "the IB offers Hindi" is not an answer to "does this school offer Hindi, at which level, in my child's year". Thinking in criteria rather than content also carries straight into IB DP Theory of Knowledge tutoring in Dubai, which is where the argument-construction skill is assessed on its own.

Ministry of Education Equivalency: The Rule That Should Inform the Decision

Families switching curricula in the UAE often do so partly with a UAE university application in mind, so the equivalency position belongs in the decision rather than after it.

For the British track the Ministry's requirements are published and specific. Students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. That is from the Ministry's July 2026 clarification of equivalency requirements for secondary school certificates on the US and UK curricula.

For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying.

The Ministry's published equivalency thresholds

Every number on that card is published for the British or American track. There is deliberately no IB number beside them, because none could be confirmed from an official Ministry source — which is the single most important thing to take from this section. The process itself is walked through in the UAE equivalency certificate for IB and IGCSE students, and the university-side question in UAE university admission with an IB Diploma and IB university recognition in the UAE.

For the IB Diploma, this article publishes no figure. No IB points threshold for Ministry equivalency could be confirmed from an official Ministry source, and at least one tutoring site currently ranking for UAE queries publishes an IGCSE subject count that contradicts the Ministry's own five — which is a useful warning about taking any of this from a tutoring page. Verify the IB position on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority.

Three honest caveats. Equivalency is a Ministry process that no tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and no tutoring is required in order to obtain it. Nothing here should be read as a reason to switch curricula — a curriculum change is not an equivalency strategy. And the rules change: check them at the point of application rather than at the point of deciding.

What the First Term Should Actually Look Like

Here is the plan that works, stated as a sequence with a deliberate pause in it.

Weeks one to three: gather, do not intervene. Collect the timetable, the subject levels, the internal assessment calendar and the marking criteria for each subject. Do not buy tutoring. You have no marked work, so any plan you build is guesswork, and a broad package bought in week one is mostly spent on subjects that were never at risk.

Week four: diagnose. First marked work exists. Read it with one question in mind: is this a content gap, a criterion-literacy gap, or a pace problem? The three need entirely different responses. Ask each teacher for a written statement of specific topics or criteria rather than a general impression, because "needs to show more analysis" is not actionable and "has not addressed criterion requirements for justification of method" is.

Weeks five to ten: target narrowly. Buy support against the written list only. In this transition the highest-return intervention is usually two or three sessions on how criterion marking works — a one-off piece of teaching, not an ongoing commitment. Content support, where needed, should name topics.

Weeks ten to fourteen: the first IA cycle. This is the teaching moment of the entire year. Treat the first internally assessed piece as the thing the student is learning to do, with the grade as a by-product. Scope the question, map it to criteria, draft early, read the feedback properly, and revise. A student who learns this process on their first IA applies it to the next eleven pieces of internally assessed work.

Term two onward: review honestly. Criterion literacy should be visibly better. Pace should have normalised. If a subject is still falling behind on content, it may be a genuine subject-level question — the wrong Higher Level choice, or the wrong mathematics route — and that is a conversation with the school, not more tutoring hours.

  1. Weeks 1-3Gather the timetable, criteria and assessment calendar; buy nothing
  2. Week 4Diagnose from first marked work; demand a written list of gaps
  3. Weeks 5-10Target the list, with criterion literacy as the first intervention
  4. Weeks 10-14Run the first Internal Assessment properly; this is the lesson
  5. Term 2Review; a persistent content gap may be a subject-choice question

Monthly figures in the same market: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions, and Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 for budget support, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Those are other providers' published figures, cited so you can budget against the real market. They are not an IB Gram price list.

Published monthly cost of one weekly hour, budget to exam-year specialist

The line plots the midpoint of each published band rather than a quote, and the slope is the budgeting point: specialist exam-year support sits at roughly three and a half times a budget tutor. For a transition year the useful read is that the expensive tier is worth buying narrowly and late, not broadly and early. The fee market is broken down further in IGCSE tutor fees in Dubai, and the delivery-mode question in home against online IB tutoring in Dubai.

For context against school fees, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there will be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within an AED 2.5 billion total. A transition-year tutoring budget therefore is not competing with a fee rise in the same year.

And how we actually deliver. For UAE families, IB Gram teaches online, one-to-one, over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visiting is an India-only service. If a tutor arriving at your address in Dubai is what you want, the in-home band above is where to price it with providers who offer it. We say this at the top of the commercial section rather than the bottom because several providers in this market leave it unsaid.

For this specific transition the online model has a concrete advantage beyond convenience. The work that matters is reading a rubric alongside the student's own draft, annotating it, and talking through why a sentence does or does not meet a criterion. That is screen work. It is arguably better on a shared screen than across a kitchen table, and it does not consume the hour of travel that an in-home session prices into every visit. The relevant pages are IB online tuition in Dubai and, for students landing in Year 11 IGCSE instead of the Diploma, Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 tutoring in Dubai. The hub for everything IB in the emirate is IB DP tutoring in Dubai.

One compliance point that applies whoever you engage. Any individual giving private lessons in the UAE needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligible categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without a MoHRE permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so be sceptical of any specific amount quoted at you. Applications go through MoHRE's private tutor licensing service on mohre.gov.ae. Ask any tutor whether they hold it. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval or accreditation, and we will not imply otherwise.

1Ask the questionDoes the tutor hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
2Check the categoryRegistered school teacher, government or private-sector employee, unemployed resident, university student, or school student aged 15 to 18
3Expect no cost objectionThe permit is granted free of charge and runs for two years, so price is not a reason for a tutor not to hold one
4Distrust a quoted fineNo fine schedule is published, so any specific penalty figure quoted at you was invented by whoever quoted it
How to check a tutor's permit before you book a single hour

Four questions, none of them awkward, and a legitimate tutor answers all four without hesitating. The permit itself is unpacked in the private tutor work permit in the UAE explained and the emirate-specific layer in KHDA rules for private tutors in Dubai. Delivery is online wherever the family lives, which is why our area pages for IB MYP tutoring in Mirdif and IB tutoring near Dubai Silicon Oasis describe a video session rather than a drive, and why families across the border start at IB DP tutoring in Abu Dhabi or IB tutoring in Sharjah.

Is the Switch Worth Making? An Honest Answer

Four cases where the move tends to repay itself, and three where it does not.

It tends to work when: the student is intellectually curious and underserved by recall-heavy assessment; the family is targeting universities in the UK, Europe, Canada or Australia where the Diploma is widely understood; the student is strong at writing and argument and that strength is currently invisible in their marks; or the family expects further international moves, because the IB travels between countries more cleanly than a national board.

It tends not to work when: the student is in a terminal examination year and the move would land mid-cycle; the family is targeting a specific Indian competitive examination route where CBSE alignment is itself the advantage; or the switch is being made to escape a grade problem that is actually a study-habits problem, in which case the new system — with its multiple deadlines and self-directed assessment — will expose it faster, not fix it.

The decision also has a cost beyond fees. The Diploma's internally assessed components, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are real, sustained work spread across two years. A student who is managing CBSE comfortably by concentrating effort near examinations will find the Diploma harder to game and more demanding of consistency. For many students that is precisely the benefit. For some it is a genuine mismatch, and a family is better off knowing which before they commit two years.

Read the right-hand column honestly before the left. The two-year commitment is real, the internally assessed components are sustained work, and a student who manages CBSE by concentrating effort near the examinations will find the Diploma harder to game. The components themselves are described at IB Extended Essay support in Dubai and IB Internal Assessment support in Dubai, with topic-level guidance in IB Extended Essay topics for UAE students and the IB TOK guide for UAE students.

What nobody can honestly offer you is certainty about the outcome. No provider can guarantee a grade, a points total or a university place, and any who does is telling you something about themselves rather than your child. What is reasonable to expect from good support is a clear diagnosis, specific targets, honest reporting, and a tutor who declines to write your child's assessed work.

Frequently Asked Questions About Switching From CBSE to IB in Dubai

Is IB harder than CBSE?

They are not points on the same scale, which is why the question rarely has a useful answer. CBSE rewards accurate reproduction of a defined syllabus under examination conditions, and its mathematics and science content is genuinely demanding. The IB rewards constructing and defending an argument, designing an investigation and documenting a process, with a meaningful share of the final grade coming from work produced over weeks against published criteria. A strong CBSE student usually arrives with equal or better content knowledge and no experience of the task types. The transition is about task type, not difficulty.

When is the best time to switch from CBSE to IB?

After CBSE Grade 10, entering DP1, is generally the cleanest. Grade 10 is a terminal point in CBSE and DP1 is a genuine beginning, so nothing is mid-flight: no Internal Assessment is half-written and no examination registration is live. Earlier moves into MYP Years 1 to 3 are also low-risk because there are years to absorb the change. The transfer to avoid where possible is a move into an examination year — mid-Grade-10 into IGCSE Year 11, or into DP2 — where syllabus coverage, board paper structure and live deadlines all have to be reconciled at once.

What is the biggest adjustment for a CBSE student entering the IB?

Criterion-based marking. A CBSE student is used to marks awarded for correct content; IB work is marked against named criteria with their own level descriptors, and a strong answer that does not address a criterion scores nothing for it. The most common pattern is a capable student whose first term marks look poor because the work is correct but not addressing what is being assessed. Two or three sessions spent on how the criteria actually work, early, is usually the single highest-return intervention of the whole transition year.

Will my child's mathematics be behind after CBSE?

Usually not in content. CBSE mathematics is algebra and calculus heavy, and a CBSE joiner frequently knows material the MYP extended route is only reaching. What is new is the mathematical exploration — an extended, self-chosen piece marked against criteria including communication, personal engagement and reflection — and the expectation of modelling unfamiliar real-world situations rather than recognising question types. Watch the placement decision carefully: a first criterion-marked task can under-read a strong CBSE student's ability, and that placement constrains Diploma options two years later.

Should a CBSE student choose Maths AA or AI in the Diploma?

The decision should be driven by the intended degree and the published prerequisites of the target universities, not by the prior curriculum. That said, CBSE mathematics habits — algebraic manipulation, calculus, proof-adjacent reasoning — tend to sit closer to Analysis and Approaches than to the data-and-modelling emphasis of Applications and Interpretation. Treat that as a tendency, not a rule, and never as a stronger argument than an actual course requirement. Check each target university's own admissions pages, since prerequisites differ between institutions and are revised.

What is an Internal Assessment and why does everyone worry about it?

An Internal Assessment is a piece of work produced over weeks, marked by the teacher against criteria the IB publishes, and then moderated by the IB. Every Diploma subject carries one, and alongside them sit the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay. Families worry because it is unfamiliar: it requires the student to set their own scope, document their reasoning and iterate on feedback over calendar time, rather than concentrate effort before an examination. The first IA is where the habit is learned, which is why it deserves attention as a teaching exercise rather than a grade to rescue.

Can a tutor help write my child's IA or Extended Essay?

No, and you should decline any provider who offers it. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain what a criterion requires, model the technique on a different example and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor must not write, rewrite or edit to completion work submitted as the student's own. Some providers in this market sell completed Internal Assessments at published prices; buying one is academic malpractice under IB rules and puts the whole Diploma at risk. IB Gram does not supply completed assessed work at any price and will decline the request.

Does my child still have to study Arabic after switching to IB in Dubai?

Yes. The requirement is attached to being a private school in Dubai, not to the curriculum. If your child was already in a Dubai CBSE school, this carries across unchanged. KHDA also requires that classes for Arabs and non-Arabs be organised separately, so ask which stream your child is placed in.

What happens to Hindi if we move from CBSE to IB?

It depends entirely on what the receiving school offers, because language options are school-specific rather than universal. The Diploma requires a studies-in-language-and-literature subject and a language-acquisition subject, and a school may offer Hindi B but not Hindi A, or Hindi at Standard Level only. Ask the school for its actual published option blocks before assuming continuity, because a language your child has studied for years may not be available at the level they need. Where it is offered, dedicated Hindi B and IGCSE Hindi support exists for Dubai students.

Does switching to IB help with UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?

Not in any way you can currently plan around, and a curriculum change is not an equivalency strategy. The Ministry's July 2026 clarification sets out the British track in detail — five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels at the same grade — and the American track's SAT, IELTS and TOEFL thresholds. It publishes no IB points figure that could be verified, so no number should be taken from any tutoring page. Verify on moe.gov.ae or with your emirate's attestation authority.

How long does it take a CBSE student to settle into the IB?

For a move at a clean seam, such as CBSE Grade 10 into DP1, expect roughly one term for criterion literacy and pace to normalise, and the first Internal Assessment cycle for the self-directed habits to take hold. Mid-year moves into an examination year take longer and carry real risk. The signal to watch is not the grade but the feedback: when a student starts reading rubric comments and acting on them without being prompted, the transition has happened. If a content gap persists into term two, treat it as a possible subject-choice question rather than more tutoring hours.

Do you send a tutor to our home in Dubai for the transition?

No. For UAE families IB Gram teaches online, one-to-one, over live video, across Dubai and every other emirate. Sending a tutor to a family's home is a service we provide in India only and we do not offer it at any UAE address. For this particular transition the online format is a good fit rather than a compromise, because the core work is reading a marking rubric alongside the student's own draft on a shared screen. If you want in-home tuition, Dubai market rates for an in-home one-to-one visit run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel.

What does a CBSE-to-IB transition year cost in tutoring?

It depends on what the diagnosis turns up, and a good plan is narrower than parents expect. Market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online tutors, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB specialist; monthly packages around AED 799 for eight online sessions appear in the same market. Those are other providers' published figures read in October 2026. The cheapest effective plan is usually a few sessions on criterion literacy plus targeted content work against a written list.

Which exam series will my child sit if they land in IGCSE instead?

Cambridge runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Cambridge's February/March series is offered to India only, so a student now sitting in the UAE cannot use it — a point that matters precisely for families arriving from India, where that series may have been the expected route. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination because the wrong zone timetable was used, so confirm the zone with your centre.

The series a UAE-based Cambridge or Pearson candidate can actually sit

February is dark on purpose. Cambridge's February/March series is offered to India only, so the series a family may have assumed was available is the one series a UAE candidate cannot use — and the zone timetable for the new centre has to be confirmed in writing, because Cambridge will not accept responsibility for a candidate who sat the wrong one. The full board-by-board calendar is in the IGCSE exam timetable for UAE students, with the Diploma side in the IB exam timetable for UAE students.
