IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Extended Essay tutor in Dubai is almost always hired at one of three moments: a research question that is too broad to answer in 4,000 words, a draft that reports findings instead of evaluating them, or a deadline eight days away. Thirty-four marks are available across five criteria, twelve of them for critical thinking alone. IB Gram matches your child with a specialist who coaches one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, around the Dubai school day.

  • Research questions narrowed until they are answerable in 4,000 words
  • Drafts marked against criteria A to E with the marks named
  • RPPF reflections coached as an assessed component, not an afterthought
  • Every word submitted is the student's own; we mark and question

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Four thousand words, forty hours, and the one Diploma component with no lessons

The Extended Essay is a piece of independent research of up to 4,000 words, written in a subject the student chooses, with roughly forty hours of their own work behind it. There is no class, no syllabus and no past paper. A supervisor is allocated by the school and the IB recommends a total of three to five hours of supervision across the whole project, including three mandatory reflection sessions. For most students it is the first time they have been asked to produce something substantial with no weekly structure, and that is precisely why it goes wrong.

The marks are distributed in a way that surprises almost every family. Thirty-four marks are available across five criteria: focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, and engagement. Critical thinking alone carries twelve of the thirty-four. Presentation carries four. A beautifully formatted essay with a full bibliography, a title page and consistent referencing that merely reports what the sources say is collecting from the smallest criterion and leaving the largest untouched.

The grade is then combined with Theory of Knowledge on a published matrix for up to three points towards the 45-point Diploma total, and a grade E in the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the Diploma regardless of subject grades. That makes it a component where the downside is larger than the upside: three points at best, no Diploma at worst. Dubai families usually discover the second half of that sentence late, often in the final term of DP2, when a supervisor mentions that the draft on file would not currently pass. The component rewards early attention and punishes nothing except being left alone.

The failure pattern is consistent and it is almost never about ability. A research question is chosen in DP1 that is interesting rather than answerable. Data collection or reading drifts over the summer. The first full draft reaches the supervisor at the point where only one comment is permitted, so the supervisor's single piece of feedback is spent on structural problems that should have been fixed months earlier. The reflections on the RPPF are then written in one sitting, which is visible to an examiner and costs marks under engagement.

What coaching does is supply the structure the component deliberately withholds. A specialist in the right subject narrows the research question until it can be answered within the limit, checks that the method can actually produce evidence, marks drafts against the criteria with the marks named rather than described, and keeps the reflection sessions honest and contemporaneous. IB Gram matches and the tutor coaches; the student does the research and writes it. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Independent research appears in every IB programme in a different form, and how well a student handled the earlier version predicts a great deal about the Extended Essay. These are the stages we work across.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay runs from the second half of DP1 into DP2. The student picks a subject, agrees a research question with an allocated supervisor, carries out the research, and submits up to 4,000 words with a completed Reflections on Planning and Progress Form. Assessment is external, against five criteria worth thirty-four marks in total, and the resulting grade runs from A to E.

Dubai schools vary widely in how early they start the process. Some allocate supervisors in January of DP1 and set a hard internal deadline before the summer; others begin after the DP1 examinations. Ask which model your child's school uses, because it changes when outside support is useful by about four months.

The Extended Essay with TOK and CAS

Two of the three core components carry marks and the third is a completion requirement. The Extended Essay is the largest single piece of writing in the Diploma; TOK is two short technically constrained tasks; CAS is portfolio and reflection work with no grade. All three are competing for the same evenings as six subjects' internal assessments.

In Dubai the Extended Essay final deadline frequently lands within a fortnight of subject internal assessment deadlines and university application dates. Students who get a complete draft in before that fortnight have a very different DP2 from those who do not, and the difference is scheduling rather than ability.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP personal project is the clearest precursor: a self-directed piece of work with a supervisor, a process journal and a report, assessed against criteria. Students who kept a genuine process journal in MYP5 usually produce credible RPPF reflections two years later. Students who wrote the journal retrospectively tend to repeat that habit.

Dubai has a large IB continuum population alongside an even larger British-curriculum intake arriving at Diploma level from IGCSE. The IGCSE group has usually never managed a project of this length, and the first coaching session is about process rather than about content.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme has no Extended Essay. Its core includes the reflective project, which asks the student to examine an ethical dilemma arising from their career-related study. It is shorter than the Extended Essay and assessed against its own criteria, but the research and reflection habits transfer almost completely.

A handful of Dubai schools offer the CP alongside the Diploma. Parents occasionally ask us for Extended Essay support when the component on the registration is the reflective project, so the first thing we confirm is which programme the student is actually enrolled in.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An Extended Essay fails in subject-specific ways, which is why we match by subject rather than by general writing ability. These are the subjects Dubai students choose most, with what each one demands and where each one goes wrong.

Biology

HL and SL

Popular and risky. A biology essay needs data the student can actually collect or defensible secondary data, plus statistical treatment the student can explain. The classic failure is an ambitious experiment with no controlled variable, run once, in a school laboratory with limited equipment, written up honestly and scoring badly on method.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Works well where the question is narrow and the chemistry is genuinely at Diploma level rather than below it. Common problems are reactions that cannot be run safely in a school laboratory and questions that reduce to a textbook explanation. Access to equipment should decide the question, not the other way round.

Physics

HL and SL

Rewards precision and punishes vagueness faster than any other science. A strong physics essay usually has a simple apparatus, a clear relationship to test, and a serious treatment of uncertainty. Essays that model something computationally need the model justified, not just run.

Mathematics

HL and SL

The subject where the critical thinking criterion is hardest to satisfy, because exposition is not evaluation. A mathematics essay needs the student to do something with the mathematics — compare approaches, test a claim, extend a result — rather than explain a known theorem well. It suits students who already read beyond the syllabus.

History

HL and SL

Needs a question with a real historiographical disagreement behind it and sources the student can reach. Dubai students often choose a topic with excellent regional interest and then find the primary material is not accessible in a language they read. Source availability should be checked before the question is fixed.

Economics

HL and SL

Strong when a theory is applied to a specific local market and tested against evidence. Weak when it becomes a description of an industry. A UAE-based question works well because data from official sources is available, provided the student treats the data critically rather than reporting it.

Psychology

HL and SL

Attractive and heavily constrained: ethical limits on research with human participants mean most essays are literature-based. That is fine, but it raises the bar on critical evaluation of studies — method, sampling, replication — which is exactly where the twelve critical thinking marks sit.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Works when the text choice is narrow and the argument is arguable. Students frequently choose three novels and produce a survey. One text, one well-framed question and sustained close analysis scores higher than breadth, and the subject-specific requirement is argument supported by the text itself.

Business Management

HL and SL

Needs a real organisation and a question the available information can answer. The common failure is an essay about a global company built entirely from its own published material, with no critical distance. A smaller local organisation that will answer questions usually produces a better essay.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary

An interdisciplinary option built around a global issue and examined through two Diploma subjects. It can score very well and it is demanding: the integration of the two subjects has to be genuine rather than two halves bolted together, and the global issue must be addressed locally and in a wider frame.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay support is bought against stages rather than by the term. These are the four blocks families in Dubai use, and which one you need depends entirely on whether the research question is fixed.

Research question block, DP1

Two or three sessions at the start, which is where the cheapest marks in the whole component are. The work is narrowing: taking a broad interest and converting it into a question that can be answered in 4,000 words with evidence the student can actually obtain in Dubai within the time available.

  • Topic tested for evidence availability before the question is fixed
  • Method checked against the school's laboratory or data access
  • Question narrowed until the answer could fit the word limit
  • Reading list built from material the student can actually reach

Research and drafting support

Fortnightly sessions through the research phase, moving to weekly during drafting. Between sessions the student reads, collects and writes to an agreed target; in the session the tutor checks progress against the criteria and keeps the reflections contemporaneous rather than reconstructed.

  • A weekly word or reading target agreed and checked
  • Reflections drafted by the student at the time, not in one sitting at the end
  • Argument structure tested before the full draft is written
  • Referencing style chosen early and applied consistently

Criteria-marked draft review

One or two sessions for a student with a complete draft. The tutor marks it against focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation and engagement, names the marks out of thirty-four, and identifies the two changes that would move the most marks. The student makes them.

  • Marks named per criterion, not general comments
  • Critical thinking assessed first, because it carries twelve marks
  • Word count and formatting checked against the requirements
  • No replacement text supplied at any point

Deadline triage

For the student who contacts us with days left. The session establishes what exists, what the criteria will reward in the time remaining, and what has to be abandoned. Triage is honest work: with a week left the realistic gain is in focus, presentation and reflections rather than in new research.

  • A plain assessment of what can and cannot change in the time
  • Priority on the criteria that can still move
  • Reflections and formatting completed properly rather than hurried
  • No promise that a week can produce an A

01

Where the thirty-four Extended Essay marks actually sit

Almost no competitor page in this market publishes the criteria with their mark allocations, and it is the single most useful thing a parent can see. The Extended Essay is marked out of thirty-four across five criteria. Focus and method carries six marks and covers the topic, the research question and the methodology. Knowledge and understanding carries six and covers subject context and correct use of terminology. Critical thinking carries twelve. Presentation carries four. Engagement carries six and is assessed from the reflections on the RPPF.

That distribution explains most disappointing grades. Students allocate effort to the parts they can see: the bibliography, the title page, the contents list, the formatting. Those sit inside the four presentation marks. Meanwhile twelve marks are waiting for analysis, evaluation of evidence, discussion of limitations and a conclusion that follows from the argument rather than restating the introduction. An essay that reports accurately and evaluates nothing has a ceiling it cannot pass however well it is produced.

Engagement is the second misunderstood criterion. Six marks are awarded on the basis of the three reflections recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, with a combined limit of 500 words. Reflections written in one sitting at the end read exactly like reflections written in one sitting at the end: they describe what happened rather than showing decisions being taken, difficulties being encountered and the approach changing. Six marks for 500 words is the best rate of return in the Diploma and the part students treat most casually.

When we mark a draft we start with critical thinking and engagement, because that is where twelve plus six of the thirty-four marks are. Presentation gets checked last and takes ten minutes. That order is the opposite of how most students work, and reversing it is often worth more than another month of reading.

The research question is the whole essay, decided in week one

  • Test evidence availability before fixing the question, not after
  • Narrow frames leave room for the evaluation that carries twelve marks
  • Survey questions, unanswerable questions and textbook questions all cap the grade
  • A local question is an advantage only if it is arguable, not just unusual

A research question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words will not become answerable later. This is the one decision where outside help pays for itself several times over, because a specialist in the subject can usually tell within twenty minutes whether a question is viable, and a student cannot. The test is not whether the question is interesting. The test is whether a specific, evidenced answer exists and whether this student can reach the evidence in the time they have.

Three shapes of question fail predictably. The survey question invites a description of a field and produces an essay with no argument. The unanswerable question depends on evidence the student cannot obtain, which in Dubai often means primary material held elsewhere or in a language the student does not read. The already-answered question has a textbook answer, so the student can only explain it, which collects knowledge marks and almost no critical thinking marks.

The shape that works is narrow and comparative or evaluative. To what extent does one specific thing explain one specific outcome in one specified context. How does one named variable affect one measured quantity under stated conditions. The narrower the frame, the more room there is inside the word limit for the evaluation that carries twelve marks. Students resist this, because a narrow question feels like a small achievement, and the mark scheme disagrees with them.

Local context helps when it is used properly. A UAE-based economics, business or geography question has data available from official sources and an examiner who has not read forty versions of it. The question still has to be arguable rather than descriptive, and the data still has to be treated critically rather than quoted. A Dubai topic chosen for novelty and handled descriptively scores no better than any other descriptive essay.

03

The supervisor, the three reflections and the one permitted comment

The school allocates a supervisor and the IB recommends between three and five hours of supervision in total for the entire project, including the three mandatory reflection sessions. That is the whole formal support a student is entitled to, spread across roughly a year. It is not a shortfall in the school's provision; it is the design of the component, which is meant to be independent research. Understanding that number early changes how a family plans, because three to five hours will not absorb a student's disorganisation.

The supervisor may comment on one complete draft. One. That comment is the most valuable single intervention in the process and it is routinely wasted, because the draft that reaches the supervisor still has structural problems — a question that drifted, a method that produced thin evidence, a conclusion that restates the introduction. The supervisor spends their comment on the structure instead of on refinement, and the student has no further formal feedback. A draft marked against the criteria before it goes to the supervisor changes what that comment can achieve.

The three reflection sessions are assessed. They are recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, limited to 500 words in total, and they feed the six engagement marks. The first comes early, around the question and the plan; the second at a mid-point, where the honest content is usually a difficulty and a change of approach; the third concludes the process and is typically accompanied by a short concluding interview, the viva voce. Reflections that record real decisions as they happen score; reflections reconstructed afterwards do not.

Nothing about this requires concealment. Tell the supervisor that your child is working with a tutor. A good supervisor will tell you which stage the student is behind on and what the school's internal deadlines actually are, both of which make outside coaching more useful rather than less.

The Extended Essay calendar, counted backwards from the submission

Nobody in this market publishes a backwards calendar, and it is the artefact that prevents most Extended Essay failures. We count in weeks before the school's own internal final deadline rather than in calendar dates, because Dubai schools set that date anywhere from the start of DP2 to several months into it, and because IB session dates should be confirmed with your child's coordinator rather than taken from a tutoring website.

The structural insight is that the research has to stop long before the writing does. A student still collecting data four weeks out cannot evaluate it properly, and evaluation is where twelve of the thirty-four marks are. Working backwards, the complete draft should reach the supervisor six to eight weeks before the internal deadline, which means the research must be finished ten to twelve weeks out, which means the question must have been fixed and viable before the DP1 summer break.

The summer between DP1 and DP2 is the pivot. Students who go into it with a settled question and a reading list come back able to write. Students who go into it with a topic and good intentions come back having done nothing, which is a completely normal human outcome and the reason the DP1 internal deadline exists at all. If your child's school does not set one, set one at home.

The last four weeks should contain no new research. They contain redrafting, the formatting and referencing check, the third reflection and the viva voce, and the final word-count audit. A student who is still reading in that window is trading twelve critical thinking marks for a few knowledge marks, which is the worst exchange rate in the component.

05

The 4,000-word limit and the formatting rules that cost marks

  • Examiners need not read past 4,000 words, and need not read appendices at all
  • Title page, contents, charts, tables, equations, references and bibliography sit outside the count
  • One referencing style applied consistently; mixing two is the usual presentation error
  • Close paraphrase still needs a citation, and submissions are checked for integrity

The limit is 4,000 words and examiners are not required to read beyond it. An essay of 4,600 words is not a fuller essay; it is a 4,000-word essay whose conclusion was never read. Certain elements sit outside the count — the title page, the contents page, maps, charts, diagrams, tables of statistical data, equations and calculations, references and citations, the bibliography and any appendices — but the argument itself has to live inside the limit, and appendices cannot be used to smuggle argument out of it. An examiner is not obliged to read an appendix at all.

That last point is worth repeating because it produces a specific, avoidable loss. Students who discover the word count problem late move whole sections into appendices. The result is an essay whose evaluation is in a place the examiner need not look, marked as though the evaluation is absent. The correct response to being over the limit is to cut, and cutting is a skill: the first things to go are the literature summary, the methodology narrative and the restatement in the conclusion.

Presentation carries four marks and is the easiest criterion to secure. A title page with the research question, a contents page, numbered pages, consistent referencing in a single style throughout, and tables and figures that are labelled and referred to in the text. The IB does not prescribe a referencing style; it expects one style used consistently. Mixing two styles is the most common presentation error we see, usually because sources were collected at different times with different tools.

Finally, the integrity check. Essays are submitted electronically by the school and checked for academic integrity. Correct citation protects a student who has paraphrased closely; absent citation does not become safe because the source was obscure. Any wording taken from a source belongs in quotation marks with a reference, and material generated by a text tool must be acknowledged according to the school's own policy.

What Extended Essay coaching costs in Dubai

Extended Essay support prices as subject-specialist work, because the useful version of it requires someone who knows how a research question fails in that specific subject. The published market in Dubai runs from roughly AED 45-65 an hour, where EdFlik advertises, up to AED 650 for a premium named tutor, which BartyED publishes. Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200. TutorChase shows AED 270. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 or above, and in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350. Those are their published figures with their dates, quoted so you can check them.

IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages. What we publish is the model: a free trial lesson first, one per family, with no card details taken, and the specific tutor's rate agreed in writing before any paid session. For the Extended Essay the sensible purchase is a small number of sessions at the right moments rather than a standing weekly slot across a year. Two or three sessions on the research question in DP1 are worth more than ten sessions in the final month.

Three things move the price. Subject scarcity is the first: a specialist for a Mathematics or World Studies essay is harder to find than one for English or Business Management. Turnaround is the second, because a draft marked inside 48 hours before a deadline is a different service from one marked in a fortnight. The third is stage — deadline triage is priced as specialist work and is also the worst value for money, which we say before taking the booking rather than after.

For context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package. Against a Diploma-year fee, a four-session Extended Essay block is a minor line item. The expensive version is the one bought in week fifty-one.

Online coaching against an in-home Extended Essay tutor in Dubai

Dubai parents search for a home tutor, so here is the honest comparison. An in-home tutor costs more per hour because travel is inside the rate — the published bands put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 for a qualified online hour. Travel also makes the schedule brittle. During a drafting phase you may want a session moved by two days or a draft read at short notice, and a tutor crossing the city in evening traffic cannot do either.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video, and in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. That is stated on every UAE page rather than discovered after a booking, because two providers in this market route UAE parents to numbers in another country without saying where the tutor is.

For this component the online format is the better tool rather than the acceptable substitute. The essay lives in a document, so the document is on a shared screen with the criteria beside it, annotated live. Mark allocations are named against the paragraph that earned them. The reflections sit in the same session, so they are written while the decision they describe is still fresh. Drafts and marked versions are kept, which means the progress from draft two to draft four is visible rather than remembered.

The decisive advantage is subject matching. The number of people within driving distance of Mudon who have supervised a Mathematics Extended Essay is close to zero. Online, the question becomes who is available in Gulf Standard Time, which is how a Dubai family gets a subject specialist instead of a generalist who is nearby. For the research question stage, that difference is the difference between a viable question and a year spent on an unviable one.

Academic honesty, permits and what to check before hiring anyone

  • The essay is the student's own independent research under IB academic honesty rules
  • A tutor marks, questions and teaches cutting; a tutor supplies no text for submission
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Guides and past papers come from the school, never from a tutor's download folder

The Extended Essay is submitted as the student's own independent research under the IB's academic honesty rules. A submission containing material the student did not produce is a malpractice matter, and the consequence lands on the student rather than on whoever supplied it. In this market that warning is concrete rather than theoretical: one site ranking for UAE IB searches openly sells completed Internal Assessments. Any provider offering to supply a finished essay, to rewrite a draft to completion, or to carry out the research on a student's behalf should end the conversation.

The legitimate version is still substantial. A tutor may test a research question, question a method, press on an argument until the student finds its weakness, mark a draft against the five criteria and name the marks, explain why a paragraph collects knowledge marks and no critical thinking marks, and teach a student to cut 600 words without losing the argument. The test we apply is whether the student can explain every change they are about to make. If they cannot, it was not their work.

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE; official guidance states it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you.

One more boundary. We do not supply IB subject guides, Extended Essay guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads, because they are the IB's copyright. The current guide for your child's session comes from the school's IB coordinator, and a provider who offers to hand it over is telling you how they operate.

Where we tutor

Where Dubai Extended Essay enquiries come from, and when

The stage at which families call differs by school cluster, because internal deadlines differ by several months across Dubai. These notes describe what we actually see rather than a list of districts.

Dubai Hills Estate and Al Khail

Newer Diploma cohorts with well-organised internal deadlines, so enquiries here arrive early and are usually about research question choice. The useful work in this area is narrowing a question in DP1 before any reading has been wasted on a topic that cannot produce evidence.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and The Gardens

A mix of British-curriculum and IB provision, with many students meeting a project of this length for the first time. Process coaching matters more than content here: a reading log, a weekly word target, and reflections written at the time rather than reconstructed later.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

Villa and townhouse communities with a long commute to the central school clusters, which makes an evening in-person arrangement expensive in time. Sessions here are scheduled online at 7pm or later, usually fortnightly during the research phase and weekly during drafting.

Mudon, Damac Hills and Town Square

Fast-growing family areas where the Diploma cohort in each school is still small. Supervisors are frequently teaching the subject and supervising several essays at once, so students here benefit most from a marked draft before the supervisor's single permitted comment is used.

Barsha Heights, Tecom and Al Quoz

Apartment living with students who work in shared space and limited quiet hours. Short, structured sessions with clear between-session tasks work better than long ones, and a fixed weekly slot protects the project from the subjects with nearer deadlines.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Victory Heights

Established Diploma families, often with an older sibling who has already been through the process. Requests from this cluster tend to be precise and late-stage: a draft read against the criteria, with the marks named, before the final submission.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Newer residential development feeding schools on both sides of the creek, with some of the longest evening journeys in the city. Online delivery is the practical default rather than a second choice, and weekend-morning sessions are common during the drafting phase.

Al Warqa, Nad Al Hamar and Mirdif

Long-established schools and a high proportion of students taking science subjects for the Extended Essay. Laboratory access and equipment availability shape what is possible, so we check what the school can actually provide before a method is agreed.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai Hills, Al Khail and Al Barsha South

A cluster of newer IB and British-curriculum provision with growing Diploma cohorts. Internal Extended Essay deadlines here tend to be well published, which makes early planning straightforward if a family asks for the dates.

  • GEMS International School Al Khail
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Metropole
  • Greenfield International School
  • Safa British School

Jebel Ali, Al Furjan and Jumeirah Village

Mixed curricula with the Diploma appearing mostly at sixth-form level. Many students here come from IGCSE and have never managed a project of this length, so the process scaffolding matters as much as the subject expertise.

  • The Arbor School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Arcadia Global School
  • Regent International School
  • Victory Heights Primary School

Al Garhoud, Mirdif and Al Warqa

Established schools on the Deira side with strong science cohorts. Laboratory access is the practical constraint on science Extended Essays in this cluster, and it should decide the research question rather than be discovered afterwards.

  • Universal American School
  • Uptown International School
  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject and the stage

The message that gets a fast match names the subject, the stage and the school's internal deadline: Biology, DP1, question not yet agreed, school checkpoint in May. Subject matters more than general essay experience here, because a Physics question and a History question fail for entirely different reasons.

  2. 02

Send the question and whatever exists

A proposed research question, a reading list, a method outline or a part-written draft. If nothing exists yet, send the subject and the two or three topics your child keeps coming back to. A specialist can usually tell within one session which of them can produce evidence inside 4,000 words.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson that ends in a verdict

One free trial lesson per family, with no card details taken. For a student at the start, the tutor gives a straight view on whether the question is viable and how to narrow it. For a student with a draft, the tutor names the marks per criterion. Either way you leave with a position, not an impression.

  4. 04

Agree the block, the rate and the turnaround

We confirm in writing how many sessions the block contains, the tutor's rate, the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, and how quickly a draft comes back marked. Turnaround is what matters in the fortnight before an internal deadline, and it is the detail most often left vague.

  5. 05

    Work to targets between sessions

Each session sets a reading or word target and the next one checks it. Reflections are written at the time rather than reconstructed at the end, because six engagement marks depend on reflections that record real decisions. You get a short written note after each session rather than a dashboard to log into.

  6. 06

Hand the draft to the supervisor at the right moment

The supervisor may comment on one complete draft, so we aim to have the structural problems fixed before that draft goes in. The block ends when the essay is submitted. We do not continue weekly sessions after submission, because there is nothing left to coach.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by subject, not by essay-writing in general

A Mathematics research question fails differently from a Business Management one. We match to the subject of the essay, which is also why online delivery matters: the pool of people who have supervised a Mathematics Extended Essay within driving distance of any one Dubai community is close to zero.

Drafts come back with marks named per criterion

Feedback says which of the thirty-four marks the draft is currently collecting and which criterion is leaking. Most students have never seen their essay placed against criterion C, where twelve marks sit, and seeing it makes the next revision obvious instead of arbitrary.

We protect the supervisor's single comment

The school supervisor may comment on one complete draft and the IB recommends three to five hours of supervision in total. Getting the structural faults out before that draft goes in changes what the school's one intervention can achieve.

The student does the research and the writing

Our tutors question, mark and teach cutting. They do not supply text for submission, rewrite to completion, or research on a student's behalf. In a market where one ranking site sells finished coursework, that is the first thing to check about anyone you hire.

A backwards calendar, not a vague timeline

We plan in weeks before your school's internal deadline: research finished at ten to twelve weeks, complete draft to the supervisor at six to eight, no new reading in the final four. Almost every Extended Essay crisis we see was visible on that calendar months earlier.

Market rates published with their source

Every AED figure here is another provider's published rate, attributed with provider and date. Three of the six competitor pages examined for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars that UAE families do not transact in.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How long is the IB Extended Essay and what falls outside the word count?+

The limit is 4,000 words and examiners are not required to read beyond it. Several elements sit outside the count: the title page, the contents page, maps, charts, diagrams, tables of statistical data, equations and calculations, citations and references, the bibliography and any appendices. The argument itself must live inside the limit, and appendices cannot be used to move analysis out of it, because an examiner is not obliged to read an appendix. An essay that runs long is not a fuller essay; it is one whose conclusion may never be read, which is why cutting is a skill worth teaching early.

How many hours should my child expect to spend on the Extended Essay?+

The IB recommends about forty hours of student work across the project. Spread over roughly a year that sounds modest, and the problem is never the total but the distribution: most students do five hours in DP1 and thirty-five in the last six weeks, which is the pattern that costs marks under critical thinking and engagement. A realistic shape is two to three hours a fortnight during the research phase, rising to weekly sessions of writing during drafting, with the reading finished ten to twelve weeks before the school's internal deadline.

What are the Extended Essay criteria and how many marks does each carry?+

Five criteria, thirty-four marks in total. Focus and method carries six marks and covers the topic, research question and methodology. Knowledge and understanding carries six. Critical thinking carries twelve — more than a third of the total — and covers analysis, evaluation of evidence and reasoned argument. Presentation carries four, for structure, layout and consistent referencing. Engagement carries six and is judged from the three reflections on the RPPF. The mark total converts to a grade from A to E, which then combines with Theory of Knowledge for up to three Diploma points. Confirm the current allocations with your child's coordinator.

Which subject should my child choose for their Extended Essay?+

The subject in which they can reach evidence, not simply the subject they enjoy most. Three practical filters help. Can the research actually be done here — laboratory equipment, accessible data, sources in a language the student reads? Is there a genuine disagreement or variable to examine, rather than a textbook answer? And is the subject one the student is taking, since knowledge and understanding assumes subject context? A strong essay in a straightforward subject beats an ambitious one in a subject where the student cannot obtain evidence, every time.

What is the RPPF and does it affect the Extended Essay grade?+

The Reflections on Planning and Progress Form records the three mandatory reflection sessions held with the supervisor, with a combined limit of 500 words, and it is the evidence for the engagement criterion worth six marks. Six marks for 500 words is the best rate of return in the component and the part most students treat as paperwork. Reflections that show real decisions — a method that did not work, a question that narrowed, a source that changed the argument — score. Reflections written in one sitting at the end describe events rather than thinking, and an examiner can tell.

How much supervision is a school required to give for the Extended Essay?+

The IB recommends a total of three to five hours of supervision for the whole project, including the three mandatory reflection sessions, and the supervisor may comment on one complete draft. That is by design: the component assesses independent research. The practical consequence is that the one permitted draft comment is extremely valuable and is routinely spent on structural problems that could have been solved months earlier. Getting those fixed before the draft goes to the supervisor is the most useful thing external coaching does, and it is worth asking the school for their internal dates in DP1.

Can a tutor help my child narrow their Extended Essay research question?+

Yes, and it is the stage where coaching changes the outcome most. A subject specialist can usually judge in one session whether a question is answerable in 4,000 words with evidence the student can reach, and a sixteen-year-old cannot. The work is narrowing: converting a broad interest into a question with a specific, evidenced answer. The decision stays the student's and the final question must be agreed with the school supervisor, who knows the school's requirements. What a tutor contributes is the judgement about viability that otherwise only arrives after six wasted months.

Can a tutor proofread my child's Extended Essay before submission?+

A tutor can teach proofreading and point out patterns — an inconsistent referencing style, tables that are never referred to in the text, a conclusion that restates the introduction — and the student then makes every change. What no tutor should do is edit the text to completion or supply replacement sentences, because the essay is submitted as the student's own work under IB academic honesty rules and the consequences of a breach land on the student. The useful test is whether your child can explain each change and why it earns marks. If they cannot, it was not their work.

What happens if the Extended Essay goes over 4,000 words?+

Examiners are not required to read beyond the limit, so the practical effect is that whatever sits past 4,000 words is likely not to be credited — usually the conclusion, which is where the argument is resolved. Moving sections into appendices does not solve it, because an examiner is not obliged to read appendices either. The real answer is cutting, and there is a reliable order: the literature summary, the narrative of what the student did and when, and any restatement in the conclusion. Those three cuts usually recover several hundred words without touching the analysis.

What is the viva voce in the Extended Essay process?+

It is a short concluding interview between the student and the supervisor, normally held as part of the third reflection session once the essay is finished. It is not an examination and carries no separate mark, but it informs the supervisor's comment and feeds the final reflection that supports the six engagement marks. Students who have genuinely done their own research find it straightforward; students who have not find it uncomfortable, which is part of why it exists. Treat it as a chance to articulate what was learned and what would be done differently.

How much does Extended Essay coaching cost in Dubai per hour?+

Published market rates give the range. EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour, Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200, TutorChase shows AED 270, Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 or above, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Those are their figures with their dates. Extended Essay work prices at the specialist end, because the useful version requires someone who knows how a research question fails in that particular subject. IB Gram confirms the specific tutor's rate in writing after a free trial lesson.

When should a Dubai Diploma student start work on the Extended Essay?+

Earlier than most do. Counting backwards from a school's internal final deadline, the research should be finished ten to twelve weeks before it, the complete draft should reach the supervisor six to eight weeks before, and the final four weeks should contain no new reading. Working back from there, the research question needs to be settled before the summer break between DP1 and DP2. That summer is the pivot: students who enter it with a viable question and a reading list return able to write, and students who enter it with a topic and good intentions return with nothing.

Do universities actually look at the Extended Essay grade?+

Indirectly and sometimes directly. The grade combines with Theory of Knowledge for up to three points towards the 45-point total, and those points frequently decide whether an offer condition is met. Some admissions tutors ask about the essay at interview, particularly where the subject matches the course applied for, and a student who researched something relevant has a genuine advantage in that conversation. The more important point for a Dubai family is the downside: a grade E in the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the Diploma, independent of how strong the six subject grades are.

Can my child submit an Extended Essay in a subject they do not study?+

Schools generally discourage it and the criteria explain why. Knowledge and understanding assumes subject context and the correct use of subject terminology, which a student who has not taken the course usually lacks, and the available supervisors are the school's own subject teachers. There are exceptions, and World Studies offers a structured interdisciplinary route built around a global issue examined through two Diploma subjects. The decision belongs to the school, so ask the coordinator before the student invests reading time in a subject they are not taking.

Is a World Studies Extended Essay a good idea for a Dubai student?+

It can be excellent and it is more demanding than it looks. A World Studies essay addresses a global issue through two Diploma subjects, and the integration has to be genuine rather than two half-essays joined together. It also needs the global issue grounded in a specific local context, which is where students based in the UAE have real material to work with. The risk is scope: two subjects inside 4,000 words leaves very little room, so the research question has to be narrower than it would be for a single-subject essay, not broader.

The cheapest marks are in the research question

Send the subject, the stage and your school's internal deadline, and we will shortlist a specialist in that subject who can work in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day. If the research question is not yet fixed, that is the session worth having first: a specialist can usually judge in an hour whether a question can be answered in 4,000 words with evidence your child can actually reach. The trial lesson is free, one per family, with no card details taken. Sessions are one-to-one over live video, and every word submitted is your child's own.
