IB Physics Tutor in Dubai Marina

A parent looking for an IB physics tutor in Dubai Marina is usually testing one thing: does this person know the current Diploma physics course, or do they know physics? The two are not the same. The course was restructured into five themes with a single scientific investigation replacing what families remember as the old practical scheme, and a tutor working from the previous guide will teach well and aim slightly wrong. This page sets out the structure, the places marks are lost, and how lessons reach a Marina household.

  • Matched to the current Diploma physics guide, Standard or Higher Level
  • Data analysis, uncertainties and graph work taught as a named skill
  • Scientific investigation coached, never written for the student

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Marina

Knowing physics and knowing the Diploma physics course are different jobs

There are a lot of capable physicists in Dubai. Engineers, former teachers, graduate students, people who sat A Level physics and did well. Far fewer of them know the current IB Diploma physics course well enough to tell a Marina parent where their child's marks are going. That is the gap this page is about, and it is a fair question to ask before paying anybody.

The reason the distinction bites is that Diploma physics was restructured. Content is now organised into five themes, lettered A to E, rather than the numbered core-and-options arrangement families with older children remember. The practical scheme has been consolidated into a single scientific investigation. The tools strands covering experimental technique, technology and mathematics run across the whole course rather than sitting in one place. A tutor working from the previous guide will still teach momentum correctly, but their sense of what is examined, how it is examined and where the emphasis falls will be out of date, and that shows up in the questions they choose to practise.

A second, quieter gap matters just as much. A large share of lost marks in Diploma physics is not physics at all. It is uncertainties, significant figures, units inside a multi-step calculation, and the discipline of answering the command term that was actually used. Explain means something specific. So does deduce, suggest, outline and discuss. Students who can do the physics routinely lose marks because they wrote a description where an explanation was asked for, and this is coachable in a way that content gaps are not.

Then there is the scientific investigation, which is where families most often want help and where the boundaries are strictest. A tutor may teach the underlying skills, explain what the criteria reward, discuss whether a research question is viable, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not design the investigation, write it, or edit it to completion. The supervisor of record is the school teacher. We state that in writing before anyone starts, because in this market at least one provider sells completed internal assessments outright, and a student who buys one is risking their diploma.

On delivery, the position is simple and we state it rather than imply it. IB Gram does not send a physics tutor to a Marina address and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India. Diploma physics tuition for UAE families is one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For a subject with this few genuine Higher Level specialists in any one neighbourhood, that is what makes the right tutor reachable at 6pm on a weekday rather than whoever happens to live within a short drive of your tower.

At a glance

  • The current course has five themes, A to E, not the older numbered core and options
  • Higher Level is a longer course with longer papers, not Standard Level with extra homework
  • Uncertainties, significant figures and command terms account for a large share of lost marks
  • The scientific investigation is supervised by the school; a tutor coaches, never writes
  • Lessons are one to one over live video; nobody is sent to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics at a Marina-serving IB school arrives in three stages, and the right support looks different at each. The fourth entry below is the parallel British route, included because several households in this cluster are choosing between them for the same child.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Physics

Two years, taken at Standard or Higher Level, assessed on two written papers plus an internally assessed scientific investigation. Content is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level extends most themes rather than adding separate ones, which is why a student can appear to be coping until the extension content arrives.

In the Marina cluster physics Higher Level is the subject most often dropped to Standard Level at the end of the first Diploma year. The decision usually happens in April or May of Year 12, and it is far better taken on the evidence of a marked paper than on how the term felt. A short diagnostic block before that decision is one of the highest-value uses of tutoring in the whole two years.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The stage before the Diploma in continuum schools. Sciences are assessed against four criteria rather than by paper, and the mathematical demand is markedly lower than Diploma physics requires. MYP 5 students heading for physics Higher Level benefit most from algebraic fluency and from graph interpretation, neither of which the MYP criteria push hard.

This is the single most common source of a surprise in the first Diploma term around the Marina. A student with strong MYP science grades meets Diploma physics and finds the mathematics, not the physics, is the obstacle. Addressing it in the summer between MYP 5 and Year 12 costs a fraction of addressing it in November.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics as the entry route

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 are the usual codes in the British-curriculum schools near the Marina. Extended or Higher tier is effectively a prerequisite for Diploma physics Higher Level, because the algebraic rearrangement and graph work assumed on day one of the Diploma is the Extended tier content rather than the Core.

A student arriving into a Diploma school from an IGCSE school elsewhere in Dubai may have sat Core tier physics, which leaves a real gap into Higher Level. It is identifiable in an hour and closeable over a summer, and it is much better found in July than in a November test.

UAEAll year groups

Mandatory UAE subjects alongside the Diploma

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA required its current arrangements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. They sit on the timetable in addition to the six Diploma subjects, the core and the investigation.

For a Diploma physics student this matters mainly as timetable pressure. A Higher Level physics student in a Dubai school carries a genuinely full week, and the realistic conclusion is often that one weekly tutoring hour has to replace something rather than be added to everything.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma physics is examined as a set of topic areas with a mathematical skill set running underneath them. Below is each area, what Higher Level adds, and the specific loss that recurs in marked papers rather than a general comment about difficulty.

Kinematics and dynamics

SL and HL

Motion graphs, projectile motion, Newton's laws and the free-body diagram. The reliable loss is a free-body diagram drawn with forces that do not act on the chosen body, after which every subsequent line of working is wrong but internally consistent. Graph gradient and area interpretation is examined constantly and taught quickly.

Work, energy and momentum

SL and HL

Conservation arguments, elastic and inelastic collisions, power and efficiency. Students lose marks by invoking conservation of energy where momentum is the conserved quantity, and by failing to state the system within which the conservation applies. At Higher Level the questions combine both in a single multi-step item.

Thermal physics and gases

SL and HL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat, the kinetic model and the ideal gas relationships. The commonest error is unit mismatch between kelvin and degrees Celsius inside a single calculation. Explanations of the kinetic model are marked for the molecular mechanism, not for a restatement of the gas law.

Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Travelling and standing waves, superposition, the Doppler effect, interference and diffraction. The standing-wave questions reward a precise account of nodes, antinodes and boundary conditions. At Higher Level the interference content goes further and is a common source of partial marks because the path difference argument is written loosely.

Gravitational and electric fields

SL, extended at HL

Field strength, potential, and the relationship between them. This is where the Higher Level extension bites hardest: potential and potential energy are distinct quantities with distinct signs, and a student who has treated them loosely at Standard Level will lose whole questions at Higher Level.

Electric circuits

SL and HL

Resistance, internal resistance, potential dividers and power. Circuit questions reward practice more than reading, and the potential divider is the single most commonly misread circuit in the course. Internal resistance questions are usually lost at the point where the terminal potential difference is confused with the electromotive force.

Magnetic effects and induction

SL, extended at HL

Magnetic force on a current and on a moving charge, and electromagnetic induction. Direction conventions are where marks go: a student who has learned a hand rule without knowing which quantity each finger represents will be right about half the time, which is indistinguishable from guessing.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL, extended at HL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect and atomic spectra. Binding energy per nucleon is reliably misread off the curve. At Higher Level the quantum content extends and the explanations are marked for the photon argument rather than for a wave description.

Uncertainties and data analysis

Both levels, examined on both papers

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, error bars and the uncertainty in a gradient. This is examined directly in the data-based section and indirectly everywhere else, and it is the single most under-taught part of the course relative to the marks it carries.

Mathematical tools for physics

Underpins the whole course

Rearrangement, logarithms, small-angle approximations, unit algebra and significant figures. Most physics marks lost by otherwise strong students are lost here rather than in the physics, which is why a diagnostic session should look at working rather than at content knowledge.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Diploma physics support takes three shapes over the two years, all delivered one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. The right one depends on where in the course your child is, and the trial lesson is how we work that out rather than guessing.

Fortnightly maintenance through Year 12

A slot every two weeks through the first Diploma year, used to keep pace with the themes as the school teaches them and to catch misconceptions before they set. This is the cheapest useful pattern in physics, because the subject is cumulative: a shaky grasp of field potential in Year 12 reappears in every Year 13 question that touches it.

  • Follows the school's own teaching order rather than a fixed curriculum
  • Targets the themes where the student's written work is weakest
  • Uncertainty and significant-figure habits built early rather than repaired late
  • Natural review point in April or May when the level decision arrives

Investigation coaching, strictly within the rules

A short block around the scientific investigation, aimed at the research question, the method design, the treatment of uncertainty and the quality of the evaluation. The school teacher remains the supervisor of record and the student writes every word. What a tutor adds is a second pair of eyes on whether the design can actually produce analysable data.

  • Research question tested for viability before weeks are spent on it
  • Uncertainty treatment and error propagation taught properly
  • Feedback on a draft the student has written, against the published criteria
  • No design, drafting or editing of the student's work at any stage

Final-term paper technique

Timed questions and whole papers in the months before the May session, marked against the published markscheme wording rather than a summary of it. This is where command-term discipline is built: a student who has written forty explain answers and had each one marked knows what the word requires, and that knowledge is worth several marks across two papers.

  • Command terms drilled against real question stems
  • Data-based questions practised as a distinct skill, not as general revision
  • Error log maintained so the same category of loss is tracked
  • Finishes with the session; no open-ended commitment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Marina

01

What the current Diploma physics course actually contains

If you are judging a tutor, start by asking them to describe the structure of the course your child is sitting. The current guide organises content into five themes rather than a numbered core with options, and a tutor who reaches for the older arrangement is telling you when they last taught it. The themes are: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Running underneath them are tools strands covering experimental technique, use of technology and the mathematics the course assumes.

Higher Level is not Standard Level with more homework. In most themes Higher Level extends the same material further rather than introducing separate topics, which has a specific consequence: a student can look as though they are coping for two terms and then meet the extension content and fall away quickly. Fields is the clearest example. Treating potential and potential energy loosely is survivable at Standard Level and is not survivable at Higher Level, where the sign conventions and the relationship between field strength and potential gradient are examined directly.

The table below maps the themes and names where the Higher Level extension usually causes trouble. Treat it as orientation rather than as a specification: the authoritative document is the subject guide your child's school issues, and the IB publishes its own course information at ibo.org. Ask your child's teacher for the school's scheme of work, because the order in which themes are taught varies between schools and a tutor should follow that order rather than impose their own.

02

How the marks are divided, and what each component rewards

Diploma physics is assessed on two written papers and one internally assessed scientific investigation. Paper 1 carries a multiple-choice section and a data-based section; Paper 2 carries short and extended response questions; the investigation is marked in school against published criteria and moderated by the IB. Higher Level papers are longer than Standard Level papers and carry a higher content ceiling. For the exact durations and percentage weightings applying to your child's session, read the assessment outline in the subject guide the school issues, because those details have changed between guide versions and a figure copied from an out-of-date page is worse than no figure.

What matters more than the exact percentages is what each component rewards, because that is what support should be aimed at. The multiple-choice section rewards breadth and speed and punishes a student who has learned three themes thoroughly and skimmed two. The data-based section rewards uncertainty handling, graph work and the ability to read an unfamiliar experiment, which is a skill set rather than a body of knowledge. The extended response questions reward command-term discipline. And the investigation rewards design quality and honest evaluation far more than it rewards an impressive-sounding topic.

That breakdown has a practical implication for how a family buys support. A student weak across the board needs content work, and that is slow. A student whose content is sound but whose data-based section is poor needs something much narrower and much faster: perhaps four sessions on uncertainty propagation, error bars, gradient uncertainty and the language of evaluation. Diagnosing which situation you are in takes one marked paper, which is why the first session should always start from your child's own script.

The table below sets out what each component asks for and where marks are commonly surrendered. It deliberately carries no durations or percentages, so that nothing on this page can go stale against a guide revision.

WHAT EACH DIPLOMA PHYSICS COMPONENT ASKS FOR, AND WHERE MARKS GO MISSING
ComponentWhat it genuinely testsWhere marks are commonly lostWhat moves it fastest
Paper 1, multiple choiceBreadth across all five themes, under time pressureThemes skimmed rather than learned; arithmetic slips under timeSpaced recall across every theme rather than depth in one

Paper 2, short responsePrecise application with correct units throughoutUnit mismatch mid-calculation; rounding too earlyForced layout and full precision until the final line

03

Command terms: the marks a competent physicist still loses

  • Explain requires a mechanism; a restated observation scores as a description
  • Deduce requires the reasoning that forces the conclusion, not just the conclusion
  • State requires no working, so working on a state question is time spent for nothing
  • Discuss requires more than one position to be put

A striking share of lost marks in Diploma physics has nothing to do with physics. It is the gap between what the question asked for and what the student provided. The command terms are defined, the markschemes are written against those definitions, and a student who has never had the difference made explicit will write a good description where an explanation was required and score about half.

Describe asks what happens. Explain asks why, and a credited explanation names a mechanism rather than restating the observation. Deduce asks for a conclusion with the reasoning that forces it. Suggest invites a plausible answer where more than one exists, and is marked generously if the reasoning is sound. Outline asks for the main points without development. Discuss asks for more than one side. State requires no working at all, which means spending two minutes on working for a state question costs time and earns nothing.

This is learnable in a handful of sessions and it is almost never taught deliberately, because a school teacher with a full class and a syllabus to finish has limited time to mark forty short answers per student against the published wording. One to one is the format where it can be done. The method is unglamorous: the student writes the answer, the tutor marks it against the markscheme language, and the student rewrites it. After thirty or forty of those the habit is set and it transfers across both papers.

It is worth saying what this is not. It is not learning to game a markscheme, and a page promising that would be selling something hollow. It is learning to answer the question that was asked, which is a legitimate academic skill and the one most likely to be missing in a student who understands the subject and underperforms on it.

04

Uncertainties, significant figures and the graph nobody taught properly

Ask a Diploma physics student to state the percentage uncertainty in a quantity they measured, propagate it through a calculation involving a square, and then quote the answer to an appropriate number of significant figures, and you will learn more in four minutes than a diagnostic test would tell you in an hour. This skill set is examined directly in the data-based section of Paper 1 and indirectly throughout Paper 2, and it underpins the investigation. It is also the part of the course most often left to be picked up rather than taught.

The specific gaps recur. Students add absolute uncertainties where they should add fractional ones. They propagate through a square without doubling the fractional uncertainty. They draw a line of best fit without considering the steepest and shallowest lines that still pass through the error bars, which is how the uncertainty in a gradient is found. They quote a calculated result to eight significant figures because that is what the calculator showed. And they write an evaluation that lists sources of error without saying which one dominates, which is the judgement the criteria actually reward.

Each of those is a short, concrete fix. A block of four to six sessions aimed only at this will frequently move a physics grade more than a term of general content revision, because the loss is concentrated and systematic rather than spread thin. It is also durable: a student who has learned to handle uncertainty properly keeps the marks for the rest of the course and carries the skill into a university laboratory.

For a Marina family this is a useful thing to ask about when choosing a tutor, precisely because it separates a physicist from a physics teacher. Somebody who works with data professionally will handle uncertainty correctly. Somebody who teaches this course will also know which of these errors the markscheme penalises and how heavily, which is the part a parent is paying for.

05

The scientific investigation: supervisor, tutor, and the line between them

The internally assessed investigation is the component families most want help with and the one where the rules are tightest. The supervisor of record is the teacher at your child's school. They confirm the work is the student's own. A tutor sits outside that relationship entirely, which defines what a tutor may usefully do and what would put your child's diploma at risk.

What a tutor may do: teach the physics the investigation rests on; explain what each criterion rewards and in what language; discuss whether a proposed research question can realistically generate data that can be analysed; teach uncertainty treatment and graphing; read a draft the student has written and give feedback the student then acts on themselves. That is a substantial and legitimate contribution, and it is usually the difference between a competent investigation and a strong one.

What a tutor must not do: choose the research question, design the method, process the data, draft any part of the report, or edit it to completion. We put that in writing before the first session. At least one provider in this market sells completed internal assessments as a product. That is academic malpractice under IB rules, the exposure falls on the student rather than on the seller, and the sanction can reach the whole diploma rather than the single subject. If a provider's pitch includes delivering the work, that is the end of the conversation.

One practical note on viability, because it is where most marks are quietly lost. Students pick research questions that sound impressive and cannot produce analysable data: too few data points, a dependent variable that barely changes across the range, or equipment the school does not have. A tutor reading the proposal before three weeks have gone into it is the cheapest intervention available on this component, and it is entirely within the rules.

06

Five questions that reveal whether a tutor knows Higher Level

  • How is the current course structured, and where does the Higher Level extension bite?
  • Potential against potential energy: what is the difference and why do the signs matter?
  • How do you get the uncertainty in a gradient from a graph with error bars?
  • What does a credited explain answer contain that a describe answer does not?
  • Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit?

A profile will say Diploma physics. These questions tell you whether that means the current course at Higher Level. They take under ten minutes on a trial call and none of them is a trick; a teacher who marks the paper answers each one immediately, and the fluency is what you are buying.

First: describe how the course is structured, and which themes carry the heaviest Higher Level extension. A current answer names the themes and identifies fields as the usual stumbling block. Second: what is the difference between gravitational potential and gravitational potential energy, and why do the signs matter? Third: how do you find the uncertainty in a gradient from a graph with error bars? Fourth: what does a credited explain answer contain that a describe answer does not? Fifth: what is the first thing you would check in a student's proposed research question for the investigation?

Then one about process rather than physics: what would the first three sessions cover, and why those? The answer you want references a marked paper and names specific losses. The answer that should concern you is an offer to go through the themes from the beginning, because that ignores the evidence already sitting in your child's script and is the slowest route available.

A final check belongs here and it concerns legality rather than competence. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so ignore any specific figure quoted at you. Asking a tutor whether they hold it is a reasonable question and a permitted tutor will answer it without friction.

07

What physics tuition costs here, and what the travel premium actually buys

Look first at the gap between in-home and online rates, because it is the most misread number in this market. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with home tutors reaching AED 500, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online. For a Marina or Palm address the upper end of the in-home range is where you will usually land, because the journey is long and the parking is slow. What that premium buys, almost entirely, is the journey. It does not buy a better physicist.

The rest of the published picture, for context. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, which is the group and university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase lists AED 270. Bestimate puts IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED quotes AED 650 at the named end. Monthly estimates in the same Bestimate table run AED 240 to 600 for budget weekly sessions, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Each figure is that provider's own, recorded in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram price.

For Diploma physics Higher Level specifically, the travel premium has a second cost that nobody prices: it narrows the pool to people who can reach your building. Higher Level physics cohorts in Dubai schools are small, the number of people who teach the current guide at that level is correspondingly small, and the subset of those who are both free at 6pm and within twenty minutes of a Marina tower may be empty. Paying a premium to restrict your choice is the wrong trade on this subject more than on almost any other.

To be explicit about what we sell: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE and the in-home figures above are other providers' market rates rather than an offer. Tuition is one to one over live video, there is no rate card published on these pages, and the sensible first step is a free trial lesson followed by an honest estimate of how many sessions the diagnosed problem needs. Ask any provider whether a quote includes VAT, because the published market figures are inconsistent on that point.

08

Physics Higher Level, and what Gulf and overseas universities read into it

Physics Higher Level is often taken because of what it keeps open rather than because the student loves it, and that is a legitimate reason. Engineering courses commonly expect it alongside Higher Level mathematics, and the combination is read as evidence of quantitative capability well beyond either subject alone. Where a student is aiming at engineering, the honest advice is usually to hold the Higher Level and get support, rather than drop to Standard Level and discover in Year 13 that a target course assumed otherwise.

Medicine is the more commonly confused case. Chemistry Higher Level is the subject most medical routes expect, with biology frequently paired, and physics is seldom the deciding subject. A Marina student taking physics Higher Level primarily because it sounds rigorous, while carrying chemistry at Standard Level, may have the combination the wrong way round for their stated ambition. That is a conversation for the school's university counsellor in the first Diploma year, not for a tutoring website, but it is worth raising before the level decision is taken.

On the regulatory side, UAE recognition of a Diploma for local university entry runs through the Ministry of Education's equivalency process, not through any tutoring provider. The Ministry's published requirements for the British track are specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3 with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No equivalent IB points threshold has been verified from the Ministry's own publications, so do not rely on a figure you see on a tutoring site, including an estimate. Check the current requirement with the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority directly.

The level decision itself usually arrives in April or May of the first Diploma year, and it should be taken on a marked paper rather than on how the year felt. A short diagnostic block before that point is one of the highest-value uses of tutoring across the whole two years, because it converts an anxious guess into an evidenced decision. Whichever way the decision goes, it is better made with the mark breakdown in front of everybody.

Where we tutor

Where the students on this page live

The Marina cluster has an unusual concentration of IB Diploma schools within a short radius, which means households here are comparing physics routes rather than hunting for one. The notes below cover what that means in practice for each community.

JBR

Diploma students here are mostly at the Al Sufouh and Meadows schools, so the physics mock calendar and the investigation deadlines arrive on the same weeks across the whole beachfront.

JLT

Split between IB and A Level sixth forms, so a JLT household is often choosing between Diploma physics Higher Level and A Level Physics for the same child, which are differently shaped courses.

The Springs and The Meadows

Beside a large IB-continuum school, so students here often come into Diploma physics from MYP sciences rather than from IGCSE, and the mathematical gap is the usual first obstacle.

Emirates Hills

Close to two established Diploma schools. Physics Higher Level students here are frequently also taking Higher Level mathematics, which makes the week genuinely full and the slot placement important.

The Greens and The Views

Mixed sixth-form destinations. Students often transfer at 16 from an IGCSE school into a Diploma school, which is exactly the transition where a physics gap appears.

Al Sufouh

Several senior schools sit here and co-curricular commitments run late, so a Diploma physics session frequently lands after 6:30pm on activity days rather than straight after school.

Bluewaters Island

A single causeway in and out. For a subject with few local Higher Level specialists, removing the journey is what makes a weekday evening slot possible at all.

Palm Jumeirah

Long internal distances and a single access road. Families here report the greatest difference between a session that needs a journey and one that does not.

The marked script converts a general worry into a list of specific losses, which is what a first session should work from.

  2. 02

Name a slot that survives a full Diploma week

Higher Level physics students in Dubai schools carry genuinely full weeks, including the mandatory UAE subjects on top of six Diploma courses. Give the quietest evening and a backup, and tell us which days carry co-curricular commitments so the slot is not placed on one of them.

  3. 03

Take the free trial as a diagnostic

One session at no cost, spent on a question your child lost marks on. The tutor establishes whether the loss was content, mathematics, uncertainty handling or command-term reading. Those four causes need four different responses, and guessing between them wastes a term.

  4. 04

Agree a plan with an end point

After the trial you get a short list: the themes or skills to target, roughly how many sessions, and when the plan will be reviewed. For a data-skills problem the honest answer is often four to six sessions rather than a standing weekly hour, and we will say so.

  5. 05

Review at the level decision and after each mock

The April or May level decision in Year 12 and every subsequent mock are the natural review points. The topic list is rewritten from the mark breakdown each time, and where physics has stabilised the sessions stop or move rather than continue out of habit.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the current guide

Tutors are matched against the five-theme structure of the course your child is actually sitting, at the correct level. A tutor working from an older arrangement teaches correctly and emphasises wrongly, and the mismatch shows up in which questions they choose to practise rather than in anything you would spot on a profile.

Data skills treated as a subject in their own right

Uncertainty propagation, error bars, gradient uncertainty and significant figures carry marks directly in the data-based section and indirectly everywhere else. They are the most under-taught part of the course relative to the marks at stake, and they respond to a short, focused block rather than to general revision.

Command terms marked, not mentioned

The method is writing an answer, having it marked against the published wording, and rewriting it. Thirty or forty of those sets a habit that transfers across both papers. A full class rarely allows for that volume of individual marking; one to one does.

The investigation boundary stated in writing

A tutor teaches the physics, explains the criteria, tests whether a research question is viable, and gives feedback on a draft your child wrote. A tutor does not design, draft or edit the work. The school teacher is the supervisor of record and nothing we do interferes with that.

No journey in the price, and a wider pool

Published in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 online for comparable qualifications; most of that gap is travel. For Higher Level physics the second effect matters more: dropping the radius is what makes a genuine specialist reachable on a weekday evening.

Thin coverage disclosed before booking

Higher Level physics cohorts are small and specialist availability varies by time slot. Where the best honest match is a weekend morning or a short wait, we say so rather than filling a Tuesday with somebody who has not taught the current guide.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Marina: your questions answered

How can I tell whether a physics tutor knows the current Diploma course?+

Ask them to describe how the course is structured and which themes carry the heaviest Higher Level extension. A current answer names the five themes and identifies fields as the usual stumbling block, because potential and potential gradient are examined directly there. Then ask how they would find the uncertainty in a gradient from a graph with error bars, and what a credited explain answer contains that a describe answer does not. A teacher who marks the paper answers all three instantly. Somebody working from the older numbered core and options arrangement will describe a course your child is not sitting.

Is Higher Level physics just Standard Level with more content?+

No, and the difference is structural rather than a matter of volume. Higher Level extends most of the same themes further instead of adding separate ones, which produces a specific pattern: a student appears to cope for two terms and then meets the extension material and falls away quickly. Fields is where this shows up most. Treating gravitational potential and gravitational potential energy loosely is survivable at Standard Level and is not at Higher Level, where the sign conventions and the field-potential relationship are examined head on. Higher Level papers are also longer, which changes how timing has to be practised.

My son is strong at physics but keeps losing marks. What is going on?+

In most cases one of three things, and a marked paper will tell you which in minutes. Command terms: a good description written where an explanation was required scores about half, because a credited explanation names a mechanism. Uncertainties: adding absolute uncertainties where fractional ones were needed, or propagating through a square without doubling the fractional uncertainty. Or units and rounding: a kelvin and Celsius mismatch mid-calculation, or rounding at an intermediate step so the final accuracy cannot be defended. None of those is a physics gap, and all three respond quickly to one-to-one correction.

Can a tutor help with the scientific investigation without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor may teach the physics the investigation rests on, explain what each criterion rewards, discuss whether a research question can realistically produce analysable data, teach uncertainty treatment and graphing, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not choose the question, design the method, process the data or write any part of the report. The school teacher remains the supervisor of record. We state this in writing before the first session, because at least one provider in this market sells completed internal assessments and the sanction for that falls on the student.

What is the most common mistake in choosing an investigation topic?+

Picking something that sounds impressive and cannot produce data worth analysing. The usual failures are too few data points across the range, a dependent variable that barely moves, equipment the school does not actually have, or a design where the uncertainty swamps the effect being measured. Three weeks can disappear before that becomes obvious. Having someone read the proposal before the practical work starts is the cheapest useful intervention on this component and is entirely within the rules, because testing viability is advice rather than design.

We are deciding whether to drop physics from Higher to Standard Level. When?+

The decision usually arrives in April or May of the first Diploma year, and it should rest on a marked paper rather than on how the year has felt. Before that point a short diagnostic block is one of the highest-value uses of tutoring in the whole two years, because it converts an anxious guess into an evidenced choice. Where a student is aiming at engineering, holding Higher Level and getting support is often better than dropping and discovering in Year 13 that a target course assumed otherwise. Where the ambition is medicine, chemistry at Higher Level usually matters more than physics does.

How much does an online Diploma physics tutor cost in Dubai?+

Published market figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase listing AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with BartyED quoting AED 650 at the named end, and the budget online tier starting around AED 33 to 65 at EdFlik and Tutopiya. Those are each provider's own published rates recorded in October 2026, not IB Gram prices. We publish no rate card on these pages.

Why is an in-home physics tutor quoted so much higher in this area?+

Because you are paying for the journey. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with home tutors reaching AED 500, against roughly AED 150 to 300 online for comparable qualifications. For a Marina, Palm or Bluewaters address the upper end is where a visiting tutor usually lands, since the drive is long and the parking is slow. The premium buys travel, not a better physicist, and it has a hidden second cost: it restricts you to specialists who can reach your building, which on Higher Level physics may mean nobody.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to our apartment in Dubai Marina?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India. Diploma physics tuition for UAE families is delivered one to one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For this subject that is an advantage rather than a compromise. Higher Level physics cohorts in Dubai schools are small, so the number of people teaching the current guide at that level is small, and the subset who are both free at 6pm and close to your tower may be empty. Removing the journey is what makes the right tutor reachable.

My daughter came from MYP sciences and is struggling in Year 12 physics. Why?+

Usually the mathematics rather than the physics. MYP sciences are assessed against criteria and the mathematical demand is markedly lower than Diploma physics assumes from the first week: algebraic rearrangement at speed, logarithms, unit algebra, and confident reading of gradients. A student with strong MYP grades can meet Diploma physics and find the obstacle is manipulation, not concepts. It is identifiable in one session and closeable in a short block, and it is much cheaper to address in the summer before Year 12 than in a November test week.

How many physics sessions a week should a Diploma student have?+

For most students, one, or one every two weeks through the first year. Physics is cumulative, so a fortnightly slot that keeps pace with the school's teaching order and catches misconceptions early is better value than a weekly hour started in a panic in Year 13. In the final term the pattern changes to timed questions and whole papers. Two sessions a week is justified where a specific component is failing and the household can protect both slots, but beyond that the independent practice attached to each session stops happening and the tutoring replaces it rather than prompting it.

Is it worth buying sessions only on uncertainties and data analysis?+

For a student whose content is sound and whose data-based work is weak, it is one of the best-value blocks available. Four to six sessions covering absolute against fractional uncertainty, propagation through powers, error bars, the uncertainty in a gradient from steepest and shallowest lines, significant figures and the language of evaluation will often move a grade more than a term of general revision. The loss is concentrated and systematic rather than spread thin. It is also durable, because the skill keeps earning marks for the rest of the course and transfers to university laboratory work.

Can one tutor take both physics and maths for a Diploma student?+

Often yes, and for this pairing it works better than most. Diploma physics assumes algebraic fluency, logarithms and confident graph work, and a tutor covering both can fix a manipulation problem in the maths slot and see the benefit appear in the physics the following week. A ninety-minute combined session usually beats two separate hours because the handover disappears. Where the student needs Higher Level physics specialism and Higher Level Analysis and Approaches specialism simultaneously, two tutors is the honest answer even though it is less convenient.

Will a tutor give us past papers and markschemes for physics?+

They should not hand over a library of them, and nor should any provider. Subject guides, past papers and markschemes are IB copyright and are distributed through the school and the IB's own channels. The correct behaviour is to work from the material your child's school provides and to reference the IB's published course information at ibo.org rather than redistributing documents. If a provider's main selling point is a private vault of papers, that is a question to ask rather than a benefit to accept, and it tells you something about how else they operate.

Does the physics tutoring have to pause during Ramadan?+

No, but the slot usually moves. The school day shortens during Ramadan and the household rhythm changes, so an early-evening session that worked in January often will not. The practical adjustment is to shift later, frequently after Iftar, and to use the period for content and derivation work rather than for timed papers, which need an alert start. Tell us before the period begins so the diary is rearranged once rather than cancelled repeatedly. Families who plan it in advance lose no continuity, and the long summer break is similarly workable because the lesson follows the laptop.

Ask the five questions, then book the trial

If you are weighing up an IB physics tutor for a Dubai Marina household, the fastest route to a decision is not a longer profile. It is five specific questions about the current course, the fields extension, gradient uncertainty, command terms and research-question viability, followed by one free trial lesson built around a question your child actually lost marks on. You will know within the hour whether you are dealing with somebody who teaches this course or somebody who knows physics. Send the level, the themes covered so far and a photograph of a recent marked paper, and the trial can be placed in an evening slot that fits a full Diploma week.
