What a Physics HL tutor should be able to show you after a month

Most Dubai parents start looking for an IB DP Physics HL tutor after a report card that says very little. A predicted 5, a comment about needing to show more working, and a parents' evening slot of eight minutes. Nothing in that tells you which theme is costing marks, whether the problem is physics or arithmetic under time pressure, or how much of it is fixable before the May session. A tutor who cannot answer those three questions in writing within a month is not teaching your child; they are keeping them company.

This page is built around evidence, because evidence is the one thing this market almost never produces. A physics session that goes well feels good to everybody in the room. The student nods, the explanation lands, the hour ends warmly, and the next mock comes back as another 5. The sessions that actually move a Higher Level physics grade look different from the outside: a timed question attempted cold, marked against the published criteria, annotated where the marks were lost, and logged so the same loss can be counted again in six weeks.

Higher Level physics is unusually suited to that kind of record keeping. The course is 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the extra content is concentrated in places that are easy to name: the fields theme, the quantum and nuclear material, the longer derivations, and the data questions in Paper 1B where candidates are asked to handle uncertainty rather than recall a formula. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent of the grade, Paper 2 carries 44 per cent, and the scientific investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent. Every mark your child loses sits inside one of those three boxes, and each box fails in a different way.

The second thing evidence does is tell you when to stop. Dubai parents are rarely short of options; they are short of a way to judge them. If after eight sessions the mark log shows the same category of error repeating at the same rate, the arrangement is not working and no amount of warmth changes that. If the log shows the error rate on unit and uncertainty questions halving while extended-response marks stay flat, you know exactly what the next block of hours should target. That is a decision you can make yourself, from a document, rather than taking a tutor's word for it.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate, with KHDA, or with any Dubai school named on this page, and tutoring for UAE families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. What a Dubai family gets instead is a Higher Level physics specialist chosen from a much larger pool than the twenty-minute drive around your own community, and a written record of what each hour produced.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics at Higher Level sits inside a wider Diploma, and the pressures around it change by year group. These are the programmes IB Gram covers for Dubai students, with a note on what each one means for a physics-heavy course load.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Physics HL is 240 taught hours spread over two years, assessed by Paper 1 at 36 per cent, Paper 2 at 44 per cent and the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. The practical scheme adds around 60 hours of laboratory and project work at Higher Level, including the ten-hour collaborative sciences project that is required but not separately graded.

Dubai students taking Physics HL usually carry Mathematics at Analysis and Approaches alongside it, and often a second Higher Level science. KHDA's mandatory subjects run in parallel: Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are required in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. That timetable pressure is why Higher Level physics support in Dubai tends to be booked for a single evening slot rather than spread across the week.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of integrated sciences assessed against four criteria rather than by examination paper. Physics appears as a strand inside MYP Sciences rather than as a separate subject with its own papers, which is why the first weeks of DP1 physics feel abrupt: the command terms get narrower, the mathematics arrives faster, and marks start depending on method rather than on a written explanation of understanding.

Several Dubai schools run the MYP as a continuum into the Diploma, and the handover is where Higher Level physics problems usually begin. A student who scored a 7 on MYP criterion C can still be short of the algebra and the graph-reading that Paper 1B assumes from the first week of DP1. Dubai families often book physics support for the DP1 autumn term purely to close that gap before the fields theme arrives.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and O Level

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1 are the two routes most Dubai students arrive from. Both are examined in a June and a November series, and both reward recall of defined relationships far more than Diploma physics does. The step up to Higher Level is less about new topics than about being asked to combine two unfamiliar relationships inside one unseen question.

A large share of Dubai students sit IGCSE at 16 and then split between A Level and the Diploma, so Physics HL classes in Dubai often contain students from three or four different IGCSE boards. Knowing which board a student came from matters: a 0625 candidate has met uncertainty informally, while a 4PH1 candidate has usually met more formula recall and less graph analysis.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme and A Level crossover

Some Dubai students move between the Diploma and A Level during DP1, or sit a mixed load. Physics at Higher Level maps reasonably well onto a two-year A Level in content, but the assessment logic is different: no synoptic paper, no option topic since the 2023 syllabus, and a single internally assessed investigation worth 20 per cent instead of a practical endorsement.

Dubai is one of the few cities where a family can realistically change curriculum mid-course, because the school density makes a transfer possible. If that is being considered for physics, the decision window in most Dubai schools closes early in DP1, and the conversation needs the school's own Diploma coordinator in it before any tutoring plan is built around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics HL is rarely the only subject under pressure, and the subjects a Dubai student pairs it with change what the evidence should track. These are the Diploma subjects IB Gram matches most often alongside Higher Level physics.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes, Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data analysis, Paper 2 structured questions and the scientific investigation. At Higher Level the fields theme and the quantum and nuclear material carry the content most often left half-finished, and Paper 2 rewards candidates who state the physics before reaching for algebra.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual companion to Physics HL. Weak logarithm, trigonometry and calculus fluency shows up as physics marks lost: a correct method abandoned halfway through a rearrangement reads to an examiner as a physics error, and the mark log will record it in the wrong column unless someone separates the two.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Paired with Physics HL less often, and worth checking against university entry lists before DP1 closes. The modelling and statistics content suits data handling in Paper 1B, but the lighter calculus means derivations in the fields theme take longer to build from scratch.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The common second science for medicine and engineering applicants in Dubai. Shares the same assessment architecture as physics, which means a student can carry an identical technique problem into both subjects and lose marks twice for one habit, usually in extended response or in significant figures.

Biology

HL and SL

A volume subject rather than a derivation subject, so it competes for revision time in a different way. Students carrying Biology HL and Physics HL together need their weekly hours split deliberately, because the revision method that works for one is close to useless for the other.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A frequent third science in Dubai schools with strong engineering intakes. The logic and algorithmic thinking transfers usefully to physics problem decomposition, though the assessment demands are unrelated and the internal assessment runs on a different timetable.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Offered in a smaller set of Dubai schools and often chosen alongside physics by students aiming at engineering. The coursework load is heavier and lands in the same DP2 window as the physics investigation, so the two deadlines need mapping together early.

Economics

HL and SL

A common sixth subject for physics students, and the one that quietly absorbs DP2 evenings because of its internal assessment commentaries. Worth naming in a tutoring plan so physics revision is not scheduled into weeks that are already committed elsewhere.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The written technique developed here transfers directly to the extended-response marks in Paper 2 physics, where candidates who can structure a short argument out-score candidates who list facts. The reverse is also true: a physics student who writes in fragments loses marks that have nothing to do with physics.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Compulsory, graded, and the first thing a physics-heavy student drops when time runs short. The TOK essay deadline sits close to the physics investigation deadline in most Dubai schools, which is a scheduling problem rather than an academic one and is solved with a calendar, not with hours.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families use Higher Level physics support, each producing a different kind of record. The choice is usually dictated by where the student is in the two-year course rather than by preference.

Weekly one-to-one, evidence-led

One recurring slot of sixty or ninety minutes, built around a timed question attempted cold, marked against the criteria, and logged. The log drives the following week, so the sequence of topics is decided by the mark loss rather than by the school's scheme of work. This is the format that produces a readable trail across a term.

  • A marked script or marked question set returned each week
  • One running mark log by theme and paper section
  • A stated target for the next attempt, in marks not adjectives
  • Half-term review where the log is read rather than described

Investigation support block

A short block of sessions around the scientific investigation, the internally assessed 20 per cent. Support covers choosing a question that can produce usable data, planning a method that controls what it claims to control, understanding uncertainty treatment, and reading the four criteria as an examiner reads them. The physics and the words stay the student's own throughout.

  • Criteria read in order: research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation
  • Feedback given as questions and criteria references, never as replacement text
  • Dated record of what was discussed at each stage
  • A clear line, stated to the student, on what help is permitted

Pre-session intensive

A compressed block in the weeks before mocks or the May session, usually two sessions a week. Every session is a timed paper section under exam conditions, marked and returned, with a short re-teach of whatever the script exposed. This is remedial triage rather than teaching, and the evidence trail is the only way to tell whether the triage is working.

  • Timed Paper 1B and Paper 2 sections, marked to the criteria
  • Error categories counted so improvement is measurable
  • Written plan for the final fortnight based on the counts
  • Sessions timed to study leave, not to the normal school week

01

The evidence pack: what should arrive after every Physics HL session

  • A cold attempt, in paper conditions, not a worked example
  • Annotation that quotes the criterion, not a score
  • One log row per attempt, naming the error category
  • A stated next target in marks for the following attempt

After a Higher Level physics session, a parent should receive three things: the student's own attempt, the marking on it, and a line in a log. That is the whole of the evidence pack, and it takes a tutor about ten minutes to produce. The reason so few Dubai providers produce it is not cost. It is that a written record makes an unproductive arrangement visible after four weeks rather than after a term.

The attempt matters more than the marking. A question the student has already seen, worked through in the session with prompts, tells you almost nothing about what they can do alone in a hall in May. A question attempted cold, in the time the paper allows, is the only artefact with predictive value. For Physics HL that means forty-five to sixty minutes of Paper 1B-style data work or a Paper 2 section, not a worksheet of recall questions with the formulae at the top of the page.

The marking should quote criteria rather than award a grade. Diploma physics marks are allocated against specific statements, and a script annotated with those statements teaches the student where the mark sat. A number out of fifteen teaches nothing. The log is the part parents underuse: one row per attempt, with the error category rather than the score, is what lets you see in week eight that unit and uncertainty errors have halved while extended-response marks have not moved at all.

None of this requires a particular platform or a subscription. It requires a tutor willing to be measured. If a provider will not produce a marked script in the first fortnight, that is the answer to the question you were asking about quality, and it arrives early enough to be useful.

Reading a marked Higher Level physics script

Dubai parents are often shown a marked paper and told the student is close. Close to what is the question the script can answer. Higher Level physics scripts fail in a small number of recognisable ways, and once a parent can name them, the conversation with a tutor changes completely. You stop asking whether the sessions are going well and start asking which category fell this month.

The first category is arithmetic and unit handling: a correct method carried into a wrong power of ten, a conversion missed, a final answer given to six significant figures when the data had two. These are not physics errors and they cannot be fixed by re-teaching physics. They are fixed by a drill and by a habit, and they respond faster than anything else on the list, which is why they are worth finding first.

The second is the description-explanation gap. The command term asks the candidate to explain and the script describes. In the fields theme this shows up constantly: a student states that the field strength falls with distance and never says why, so the mark for the mechanism is not available to award. The third is the abandoned derivation, where an unfamiliar combination of two relationships stops a confident student dead. The fourth is uncertainty: Paper 1B asks for a treatment of error that many candidates have met only as a laboratory ritual.

A tutor who can place every lost mark into one of those four boxes can also tell you how long each box takes to empty. Unit discipline moves inside a fortnight. The description-explanation gap takes six to eight weeks of marked questions because it is a writing habit as much as a physics one. Abandoned derivations need content re-teaching followed by repetition on unseen combinations, and uncertainty needs a short, deliberate block of its own.

Twenty weeks of DP2 physics, and the evidence at each stage

A Higher Level physics grade does not move in a straight line, and a tutoring arrangement judged week by week will be abandoned exactly when it starts working. What follows is the shape a DP2 block usually takes for a Dubai student starting in the autumn term with a predicted 5 and an ambition of a 7. The dates belong to your school's own calendar; the sequence does not change much.

The first three weeks are diagnosis, and they often feel like the least productive part of the whole arrangement. A cold Paper 2 section, a cold Paper 1B section, and a conversation about the investigation produce a baseline, and baselines are uncomfortable reading. Parents who stop here conclude that the tutor spent three sessions finding out what the school already said. What the school said was a predicted grade; what the baseline gives is a distribution of lost marks across four categories.

Weeks four to ten are content and habit together. The habit work is unit discipline and command-term response, drilled on short questions. The content work follows the mark log, which usually points at fields first and at the quantum and nuclear material second. Through this phase the total score on timed attempts often stays flat while the error mix changes underneath it, and that is the single most misread moment in the whole block. The log is the only thing that shows the change.

From week eleven the investigation competes for every hour, and in most Dubai schools the internal deadline lands in this window. Weeks fifteen to twenty are paper technique under time, with full sections rather than questions, and this is where the score moves visibly. A student whose error mix shifted in week eight typically sees the number follow in weeks sixteen to eighteen. Starting the whole sequence in February rather than September does not compress it; it removes the first half.

04

Grade movement needs a baseline, and the school report is not one

Every tutoring conversation in Dubai eventually reaches the phrase grade improvement, and it is almost always used without a baseline. A predicted grade is a professional judgement made by a teacher using the evidence they hold, which in DP1 is often two class tests and a piece of coursework. It is not a measurement of where a candidate currently stands against Diploma criteria in May conditions, and it moves for reasons that have nothing to do with the student, including a school's own internal moderation.

A usable baseline has three properties. It is a cold attempt, it is marked against the published criteria rather than a school rubric, and it is recorded in a form that can be compared with the next one. Two Paper 2 sections six weeks apart, both unseen, both timed, both marked the same way, tell you something real. A mock sat under different conditions with a different mark scheme and a different question selection tells you much less than the number printed on it suggests.

Grade boundaries make this harder to read than parents expect. The marks required for each Diploma grade are set per session after the papers are sat, so a raw score of sixty does not map to a fixed grade across years. Anyone quoting a precise boundary for a future session is guessing. What can be tracked honestly is raw marks on comparable material and the error categories behind them, which is why the log matters more than any single predicted grade.

This is also why no honest provider can promise a particular outcome. IB Gram publishes no grade guarantee and no success rate, because a success rate without a sample size, a date and a method is a marketing number rather than evidence. What can be promised is the record: the attempts, the marking, the log, and a half-term review in which you read it rather than hear about it.

05

The scientific investigation: four criteria, and where help has to stop

The scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the Higher Level physics grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria, with a word limit of 3,000 words and around ten hours of class time allocated to it. The four criteria are research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying six marks. Students lose marks in all four for the same underlying reason: the question they chose cannot produce data good enough to support a conclusion worth drawing.

Legitimate support concentrates on the stage before any data exists. A tutor can ask whether the chosen relationship is actually measurable with the apparatus available, whether the range of the independent variable is wide enough to show a trend, how many repeats the uncertainty budget demands, and what the student intends to do when the graph is not a straight line. Those questions change outcomes more than anything that happens after data collection, and none of them require a tutor to touch the student's work.

The line is specific and the IB enforces it: the work submitted must be the student's own, in the student's own words, and a tutor's contribution must be the kind of guidance a teacher would give. Feedback that arrives as replacement sentences is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student. A tutor working through IB Gram gives feedback as questions and criterion references, keeps a dated note of what was discussed at each stage, and says so plainly to the student at the start. If you are offered finished investigation text by any provider in this market, that is the moment to walk away; two providers found in the research for this page sell exactly that.

Practical work raises a reasonable question about online delivery, and it deserves a straight answer. Data collection happens in your child's school laboratory, with their teacher, under the school's practical scheme. What an online session can do is interrogate a method before the laboratory slot, work through uncertainty propagation on the numbers the student brought back, and read a draft conclusion against criterion C. That is where the marks are decided in any case.

THE FOUR INVESTIGATION CRITERIA AND LEGITIMATE SUPPORT
CriterionMarksWhat it rewardsWhat a tutor may do
Research design6A focused question with controlled and justified variablesQuestion whether the design can produce usable data
Data analysis6Correct processing with uncertainties carried throughTeach propagation on the student's own numbers
Conclusion6A claim the data actually supports, in contextAsk what the gradient physically means
Evaluation6Honest limitations and realistic improvementsPoint to the criterion wording and let the student respond
06

What Higher Level physics support costs in Dubai, and what each band includes

Published rates in this market are scarce and inconsistent, so the table below quotes what named providers publish and when it was read, rather than offering an average. The pattern worth understanding is that the band you choose changes the evidence you receive more than it changes the explanation quality in the room. Cheap sessions are rarely bad lessons; they are lessons with no record attached, which means you cannot tell whether they worked.

At the lower end sit university students and generalist science tutors. For a DP1 student who needs company while working through problem sets, that can be reasonable value. For a DP2 Higher Level candidate who needs a Paper 2 section marked to criteria, it usually is not, because marking Diploma physics accurately is a specialist skill and an unmarked hour produces no evidence. The middle band is qualified subject teachers, and the specialist band is where candidates who have taught the 2023 syllabus through a full cycle sit.

In-home visits carry the travel premium, which the market prices at roughly the difference between the online and in-home columns. For a Dubai family that premium buys proximity rather than specialism: the pool narrows to tutors who will drive to your community at the hour you need. IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE, so the comparison here is offered as market information rather than as a service description. Online delivery is what removes the travel cost from the hour and widens the pool to whoever actually teaches Higher Level physics.

IB Gram publishes no price list on these pages. Rates depend on level, session length and the tutor matched, and the honest route is a free first lesson followed by a quoted block. What you should expect in writing before paying for anything: the rate per sixty minutes, whether marking time is inside or outside the hour, the cancellation terms, and what arrives after each session.

KHDA, the permit, and who is actually marking the script

Dubai private schools are regulated by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Inspection reports are published on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and parents reasonably use them when choosing a school. They are much less useful for choosing a tutor, because an inspection judges a school's provision and says nothing about the person marking your child's physics script on a Tuesday evening.

Private tutoring itself is regulated separately. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists the application route through its smart app and e-services with a two working day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anybody.

Two practical consequences follow for a Dubai parent. The first is that you may ask any tutor whether they hold the permit, and a straight answer is reasonable to expect. The second concerns your child's own teachers: ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi school staff bar paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction, so an arrangement with your child's own physics teacher is the wrong place to start regardless of emirate.

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education or the International Baccalaureate, and holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is the specific authorisation issued to training institutes operating premises in Dubai. Any provider describing its tutors as approved by a regulator should be asked to show the permit number. The regulators named here are described so you can check things yourself, not to borrow their authority.

When the evidence says stop, change tutor, or change strategy

  • Flat error mix over six attempts: change specialist, not volume
  • Mix shifting, score lagging: continue, the score follows later
  • Physics clean, marks flat: the problem is elsewhere, stop paying for physics
  • No specialist free in your slot: wait with a date, or move the slot

The hardest decision in paid tutoring is when to end it, and families who keep a log find it much easier than families who do not. Three patterns in the record justify three different decisions, and none of them require a difficult conversation about effort or attitude.

The first pattern is a flat error mix across six or more cold attempts. Same categories, same rates, no movement. That is a teaching mismatch rather than a student problem, and the right response is a different specialist, not more hours with the same one. The second pattern is the opposite: the error mix shifts, the raw score lags, and the student reports that papers feel more manageable. That is the normal shape of improvement in Higher Level physics and the worst possible moment to stop paying, because the score usually follows the mix by six to eight weeks.

The third pattern is the useful one nobody markets. The log shows physics errors falling towards zero while marks stay flat for reasons outside physics: time management across a full paper, a reading-speed problem, or mathematics fluency that collapses under exam pressure. In that case the correct decision is to stop buying physics hours and buy mathematics hours or sit a timed full paper with a stopwatch instead. A tutor who tells you that is worth keeping for the subject they do teach.

There is also the honest limit on availability. Higher Level physics specialists who have taught a full cycle of the 2023 syllabus are a small group across any platform, and the 5pm to 8pm Gulf Standard Time window is where every Dubai family wants to be. If no specialist is free in your slot, IB Gram will say so rather than placing a general science tutor and calling it physics. The alternatives offered are a different time, a short wait with a named date, or a specialist in another time zone whose evening overlaps a Dubai afternoon.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Lessons are delivered online, so your community does not limit which Higher Level physics specialist your child can work with. It does shape when a session can realistically start, because school-run times and commute patterns differ sharply across Dubai.

Dubai Marina and JBR

High-rise families with short walks to school buses but long evening lifts. A 4pm start rarely works in term time; 5.30pm or 7pm slots hold much better across a twenty-week physics block.

Dubai Hills Estate

Villa communities feeding several Diploma schools, with a sizeable cohort carrying two Higher Level sciences. Early-evening slots fill first here, so booking a recurring weekday time in September is worth more than flexibility later.

Arabian Ranches

School buses return late from the Jumeirah and Al Barsha corridors, which pushes physics sessions towards 6pm. Families here often prefer one ninety-minute session over two short ones, which suits marked-paper work.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

A large IB continuum cohort and short school commutes, so earlier slots are genuinely available. Useful for DP2 students who need a timed paper attempted while they are still alert rather than at 8pm.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Dense school cluster with several Diploma providers within a few kilometres. Students here frequently arrive with a strong IGCSE physics background from a different board than their current classmates, which the first session should check.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Apartment living with working parents on later schedules. Sessions after 7.30pm are common, and a shared written log matters more here because the parent is often not in the room at any point.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Furjan

Fast-growing communities with students spread across many schools, so classmates rarely share a physics teacher. Peer revision is weaker as a result, and a specialist slot does more work than it would elsewhere.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Several large Diploma cohorts within a short radius and heavy traffic on the Al Khail corridor at pickup. Online delivery removes the part of the evening a Higher Level physics session would otherwise spend in a car.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai central and Al Barsha corridor

The densest run of IB Diploma provision in the emirate, and the cluster where Higher Level physics classes are most likely to be large enough to split into two sets. Students from these schools arrive with the most consistent coverage of the five themes but the widest spread in data-handling confidence.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Dubai American Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

Villa communities and the southern corridor

Diploma cohorts attached to villa communities, where the physics set is often smaller and taught by a single specialist across both years. Smaller sets mean less streaming, so a Higher Level student and a struggling Standard Level student can sit in the same room for the same explanation.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Repton School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Hartland International School

Creek, Festival City and the eastern suburbs

An established eastern cluster with long-running Diploma programmes and a high proportion of students who completed the MYP in the same school. The physics transition from MYP criteria to DP papers is visible in this cluster more than anywhere else in Dubai.

  • Deira International School
  • Uptown International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai IB landscape only. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any school, school group or regulator mentioned on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the evidence you already hold

Year group, school, predicted grade, and whatever marked work exists. A photographed mock script is worth more than a paragraph of description, because it shows the error categories immediately rather than after three sessions of diagnosis.

  2. 02

Free first lesson with a cold question

The trial session includes a short unseen question attempted under time, not a conversation about goals. You receive the marked attempt afterwards. If the marking is vague or arrives without criteria quoted, you have learned something useful at no cost.

  3. 03

    Baseline and a written plan

Across the first two or three sessions the specialist establishes a baseline across Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation, then sets out the sequence of work and what evidence each stage will produce. The plan is a document you keep, not a verbal agreement.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with a running log

Each session returns a marked attempt and adds a log row naming the error category. The log sets the next session's content, so the plan adapts to the evidence rather than to the school's scheme of work or to whatever felt difficult last week.

  5. 05

    Half-term review against the log

Twice a term you read the record and decide: continue, change specialist, change subject, or stop. Any change of tutor carries the log across, so a new specialist starts from the evidence rather than from another three weeks of diagnosis.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specialists, not general science tutors

Higher Level physics marking is a specific skill. A tutor matched for this page teaches the Diploma course at Higher Level and has marked the long structured questions in Paper 2 enough times to annotate against criteria rather than correct arithmetic.

A record you can read without us

Marked attempts, a mark log and dated investigation notes are yours. They make the arrangement measurable and they transfer: if you change provider, the evidence goes with your child rather than staying in somebody's session notes.

Online delivery, honestly described

Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes, so the pool is chosen for who teaches Physics HL rather than for who lives within a short drive of your community.

Rates shown with their sources

The AED figures on this page are market rates published by named providers with the date they were read. IB Gram quotes its own rate after the free first lesson, with the marking and cancellation terms stated in writing before anything is paid.

A stated line on assessed work

Feedback on the scientific investigation is given as questions and criterion references. Nothing is written for the student, and the boundary is explained to the student directly, because the malpractice consequence falls on them and not on a tutor.

Availability stated plainly

If no Higher Level physics specialist is free in your preferred slot, you are told and offered a dated alternative. A general science tutor is never substituted for a physics specialist on the assumption that nobody will check.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What should an IB DP Physics HL tutor in Dubai hand over after the first month?+

Four marked attempts, each on an unseen question tried under time, with annotation that quotes the assessment criteria. A log naming the error category for each attempt. A short written plan saying which category is being targeted next and why. If the investigation has started, a dated note of what was discussed at each stage. That is around ten minutes of work per session for the tutor and it is the only way you can judge the arrangement at four weeks rather than at the end of term, when the May session is already close.

Why does my son's physics score stay at 5 even though the sessions seem to be working?+

Usually because the error mix is changing before the total does. In Higher Level physics a student often fixes unit discipline and significant figures first, which frees marks that are immediately spent on harder extended-response questions they now attempt instead of leaving blank. The raw score looks flat while the script underneath is quite different. A mark log makes this visible: the unit column falls, the explanation column has not moved yet. The total usually follows six to eight weeks after the mix shifts, which is exactly when families lose patience.

Can a Physics HL tutor mark a Paper 2 section the way an examiner would?+

A specialist who has taught the 2023 syllabus through a full cycle can mark closely to the published criteria and show which statement earned each mark. That is not the same as access to live marking, and no tutor should imply otherwise. What accurate marking gives you is a script annotated with the criterion wording, so the student sees that a description was offered where an explanation was required. Ask to see one marked script before booking a block; the quality of the annotation tells you more than any profile summary.

How much of the Higher Level physics grade actually depends on the investigation?+

Twenty per cent, marked out of 24 across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each worth six marks. There is a 3,000-word limit and schools typically allocate around ten hours of class time. Because it is internally assessed and then moderated, it is also the one component where early decisions matter most. A question that cannot produce data good enough to support a conclusion costs marks in all four criteria at once, and that choice is made weeks before any data exists.

Is there any point tutoring physics over video when so much of it is practical?+

Data collection happens in your child's school laboratory with their own teacher, under the school's practical scheme, and that does not change. The marks in the investigation are decided elsewhere: in the choice of question, in the uncertainty treatment, in whether the conclusion claims what the data supports, and in the honesty of the evaluation. All four are better worked through with a screen, a shared document and the student's own numbers in front of both of you than they are standing beside apparatus.

Which part of the Higher Level physics course causes Dubai students the most trouble?+

The fields material, for two reasons. It arrives when DP2 pressure is at its highest in most Dubai school calendars, and it demands explanation of a mechanism rather than recall of a relationship, which is the weakest habit in the average script. The quantum and nuclear material runs it close, usually because it is taught last and revised least. A mark log sorted by theme will tell you which of the two is costing your child more; the general answer is less useful than their own distribution.

Do we pay for the time a Physics HL tutor spends marking a paper?+

Ask before you book, because practice across the Dubai market varies and both answers are legitimate. Some tutors mark inside the hour, which means less teaching time and a script annotated during the session. Others mark between sessions and charge for it, or absorb it into a block rate. What you should not accept is a quote that leaves it ambiguous, because marking a full Paper 2 section carefully takes real time and an arrangement that does not price it tends to stop producing marked scripts after a few weeks.

Our daughter is in DP1. Is it too early for Higher Level physics support?+

DP1 is the cheapest place to fix habits, and unit discipline, graph reading and command-term response are habits. A student who leaves DP1 with those three in place spends DP2 on content and technique rather than on repairing arithmetic under time pressure. The DP1 case for support is weaker if the school's own physics set is small and well taught and the first mock is strong. In that situation a short investigation block later in the year is usually better value than a weekly slot from September.

What does a KHDA inspection rating tell us about tutoring choices?+

Very little. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak and publishes the reports, which is genuinely useful when choosing a school. It judges the school's provision as a whole, not the physics set your child sits in and certainly not the tutor you are considering. A school in a high band can still run a Higher Level physics class of twenty-four with one specialist, which is the situation that sends most Dubai families looking for a one-to-one slot in the first place.

Is a tutor advertised as an examiner worth the extra AED per hour for Physics HL?+

Only if the claim can be evidenced and only if it changes what you receive. Current examiner status should never be used to imply access to live mark schemes, boundaries or paper content, and no reputable provider would suggest it does. What matters is whether the person can mark a script accurately against published criteria and explain the gap to a sixteen-year-old. Plenty of tutors in the AED 200 to 450 specialist band do that well. Ask for a marked sample rather than paying for a label.

How long before the May session should a Physics HL student start one-to-one work?+

A full twenty-week block starting in the DP2 autumn term gives room for diagnosis, content repair, the investigation and then timed paper technique in sequence. Starting in February removes the first half of that, so the work becomes triage: find the two biggest error categories, drill them, and leave the rest. Triage still moves marks, but it moves fewer of them and it cannot repair a theme that was never properly taught. Earlier is cheaper per mark gained, which is the honest version of the urgency argument.

Can one tutor cover Physics HL and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches together?+

Sometimes, and it can be efficient because physics marks are frequently lost to mathematics. A tutor comfortable in both can separate a physics error from an algebra error in the same script, which stops the mark log blaming the wrong subject. The risk is dilution: two Higher Level subjects in one weekly hour means neither gets enough timed practice. If both are genuinely weak, two slots are better value than one slot splitting its attention between them.

Does a Physics HL grade matter for Ministry of Education equivalency in the UAE?+

Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and it treats curricula differently, so the honest answer is to check the current requirement on the Ministry's own channel rather than trust a tutoring page. For the British track the published rule is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels. No verified IB points threshold was available for this page, so none is published here. Tutoring is not required for equivalency.

What happens if no Higher Level physics specialist is free in our evening slot?+

You are told, with a date. The 5pm to 8pm Gulf Standard Time window is the most requested across every Dubai community, and specialists who have taught the 2023 syllabus through a full cycle are a limited group on any platform. The options offered are a different time in the same week, a named wait until a slot opens, or a specialist whose own evening overlaps a Dubai afternoon. What is not offered is a general science tutor relabelled as a physics specialist.

Can physics sessions move during Ramadan or study leave?+

Yes, and they usually should. Dubai school hours shorten during Ramadan and families often prefer sessions after Iftar, which moves a physics slot several hours later for a month. During study leave the useful pattern changes too: two shorter sessions a week with timed paper sections in between beats one long session, because the marked script is the thing that drives the next hour. Both are scheduling decisions rather than academic ones, and they are agreed in advance rather than renegotiated each week.

Should we ask for a recording of each physics session?+

Recordings are useful for a derivation the student will want to watch again, and far less useful than a marked script for judging whether the arrangement works. A recording shows what was taught; the script shows what the student can do unaided. If you have to choose, take the script. If a provider offers recordings instead of marking, treat that as a signal about where their time goes, and ask directly what arrives in writing after each session.

Start with one marked paper

The useful first step is small: a free lesson in which your child attempts an unseen Higher Level physics question under time, and you receive the marked script afterwards with the criteria quoted on it. That single document tells you more about where the grade is sitting than a term of parents' evenings. If the evidence is worth continuing with, a specialist sets a baseline across Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation, and you get a written plan and a running log. Sessions are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and the first one costs nothing.
