IB DP English A Language and Literature Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB DP English A Language and Literature tutor in Dubai means paying for marking, not for lessons. The hour that moves a grade is the hour somebody reads a Paper 1 response against the published descriptors and writes down why it scored what it scored. This page publishes the AED bands other providers advertise in this market, with the source and the date attached, then sets out which components repay paid time and which do not. Sessions are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Dubai AED bands quoted with the provider and the month they were read
  • Cost set out by component, so you buy marks rather than hours
  • One-to-one over live video; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
  • A free trial hour, no card required, before any block is agreed

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The cost question, answered before anything else

Published rates for English tuition in Dubai run from roughly AED 45 an hour to AED 650, and the two ends of that range are selling different things. At the bottom sit platforms advertising university-student tutors: EdFlik publishes from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. In the middle sit qualified subject tutors working online, broadly AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. At the top sit IB specialists, around AED 200 to AED 450 and beyond, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table showing AED 200 to AED 450 or more, while BartyED publishes AED 650 for named premium tutoring. Those are other providers' own figures, read in October 2026. None of them is our price list.

What almost nobody in this market explains is why the same subject costs four times as much from one provider as another, and the answer is simple enough to state in a sentence: the expensive hour includes marking and the cheap hour does not. In English A Language and Literature the thing that is hard to buy is a person who will read a 900-word response to an unseen text, score it against each descriptor, and explain in writing which sentence lost the mark. Conversation about themes is cheap because almost anyone can supply it. Accurate marking against published criteria is scarce, and it is what the grade actually responds to.

That reframes the budgeting question usefully. A family deciding between two providers at AED 150 and AED 300 is not choosing between value and luxury; they are choosing between an hour of discussion and an hour of assessment. Six discussion hours and two marked scripts cost about the same as four marked scripts, and in this subject the four marked scripts will do more. The arithmetic is unglamorous and it is the single most useful thing a Dubai parent can know before the first phone call.

This page is therefore organised by what a paid hour does rather than by what it is called. The tables set out the market bands with their sources, the cost of support component by component across the four assessed pieces, and a two-year sequence showing where the hours are worth most in DP1 and where they are wasted. Where the honest answer is to buy nothing, that is written down too, because in English A there are two stretches of the course where a tutor adds very little and a reading list adds a great deal.

Everything here is delivered one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own essay on screen while it is annotated. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we run only in India. For a marking-led subject that removes a real cost rather than a convenience: nobody is paying for forty minutes of Sheikh Zayed Road in an hourly rate, and the family selects from people who have marked Group 1 scripts rather than from whoever lives nearby.

At a glance

  • Every AED figure on this page is a competitor's published rate, with the month it was read
  • Marking, not conversation, is the component of an hour that moves a Group 1 grade
  • Component-level costing so a family can fund Paper 1 practice and skip what does not pay
  • A free trial hour with no card required, used to price the real work honestly
  • Two stretches of the course where the sensible advice is to buy nothing at all
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English A Language and Literature is a Diploma Programme Group 1 course, but families are usually budgeting across a longer arc than two years. The programmes below are the ones that set a student's starting position in it, with a note on what each one leaves unpaid for when DP1 begins.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Language and Literature is offered at Higher and Standard Level and assesses four components: Paper 1 on unseen non-literary texts, Paper 2 as a comparative essay, an individual oral, and at Higher Level an additional essay on a studied work or body of work. Two of the four are sat under examination conditions with no texts in the room, which is why timed marked practice is the expensive part of the course rather than the reading.

Dubai schools commonly run Language and Literature as the default Group 1 course because it suits a student body studying in English without English always being a first language at home. That makes the cohort wide in ability, and it is the main reason paid support in this subject is bought at very different price points inside the same classroom.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language and Literature assesses analysing, organising, producing text and using language, and it introduces unseen extract work early. A student arriving in DP1 from a continuum school has usually met the demand before. The budget consequence is direct: that student needs marked timed practice rather than teaching, which is the cheaper of the two to buy in volume.

Dubai has a large number of IB continuum schools, so a significant share of DP1 students here come through MYP rather than IGCSE. Families moving between the two systems mid-school should budget for one diagnostic marked script early rather than a term of weekly sessions bought blind.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE English

IGCSE English rewards accuracy, structure and a clear response to a seen question. The transition into Language and Literature costs most students one grade in the first term, because the Diploma asks for the effect of a specific choice on a specific audience rather than a competent general answer. That gap is a teaching problem, which is the one part of this course where paying for instruction rather than marking is correct.

UK curriculum accounts for 37 per cent of enrolment across Dubai's private schools, so the IGCSE-to-Diploma transition is the single commonest route into English A here. Budgeting two or three teaching hours in the first term of DP1 is cheaper than six marking hours in DP2 trying to unpick habits that were never corrected.

COREAges 16-19 · Both DP years

Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

Group 1 students frequently register the Extended Essay in English, and the Theory of Knowledge essay draws on the same analytical writing. Both compete for the same budget and the same evenings. Families who plan the core alongside the subject usually buy fewer hours overall, because one tutor covering the analytical craft across all three is cheaper than three separate arrangements.

In Dubai schools the Extended Essay internal deadlines and the English A individual oral window often fall within the same half-term, which is the predictable spending spike in DP2. Mapping it in October rather than discovering it in February is the difference between a planned block and an emergency rate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Families rarely buy support in one subject alone, and the cost of a package depends on which combination is being covered. The subjects below are the ones most often bought alongside English A Language and Literature in Dubai, with a note on whether a shared tutor is realistic or whether a specialist is unavoidable.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Four components, two of them unseen and timed. Paid hours earn most on marked Paper 1 practice and on narrowing the individual oral global issue; they earn least on reading the set works, which the school already does and a student can do unpaid.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

The sibling Group 1 course, built on nine or thirteen prescribed works. Cost behaves differently: the volume of reading drives the budget rather than the marking load, so a student behind on set works needs a reading plan before they need a tutor.

English B

HL and SL

A language acquisition course, not a Group 1 literature course. Parents sometimes buy English B support for a child in English A, which is cheap and ineffective. The criteria are different and so is the marking, so the saving disappears at the first assessed piece.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK essay rewards the same discipline as a Language and Literature Paper 2: a controlled claim, evidence, and an acknowledged limitation. A Group 1 specialist can usually cover both inside one booked hour, which is the clearest package saving available in the Diploma core.

History

HL and SL

Essay-heavy and often bought in the same term. Source evaluation in History and the handling of non-literary text types in Language and Literature train the same habit of asking who produced a text and for whom, so marked essays in one frequently improve the other.

Psychology

HL and SL

Chosen widely in Dubai schools and heavy on precise written explanation under time pressure. Students who write loosely in English A usually write loosely here too, which means one marking-led arrangement can address both and a second tutor is often an avoidable cost.

Economics

HL and SL

Paper answers demand definition, diagram and evaluation in a fixed order. Group 1 students who struggle with structure rather than ideas often improve in both subjects from the same intervention, so check for overlap before funding two separate weekly hours.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study writing rewards relevance and selection, the exact skill a Paper 2 comparative essay tests. A student losing marks for including everything they know will be losing them in both subjects, and the fix is one habit rather than two syllabuses.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

No overlap at all, and listed here for budgeting honesty. Maths support cannot share an hour with English A; it is a separate specialist and a separate line in the budget, usually at the upper end of the published Dubai bands in an exam year.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways of buying English A support, priced differently because they contain different amounts of marking. All are delivered one-to-one over live video with the student's own writing on screen, and each states what is returned in writing at the end.

Marked script package

A fixed number of timed responses written by the student, each returned annotated with a score against every descriptor and a written note on the sentence that cost the mark. No teaching time is included beyond a short debrief. This is the cheapest route to measurable movement in a course with two unseen components.

  • Four, six or eight timed responses, marked and returned
  • Descriptor-level scores with reasoning in writing
  • Twenty-minute debrief per script, online
  • No weekly commitment and no minimum term

Weekly one-to-one with marking included

A standing hour that combines teaching and assessment: the previous week's writing is marked before the session and the hour is spent on the specific weakness it exposed. More expensive per hour than a marked script, cheaper per mark gained for a student who needs instruction as well as feedback.

  • One hour weekly, same slot, Gulf Standard Time
  • Marking completed before the session, not during it
  • Running record of descriptor scores by component
  • Monthly written note to the parent

Component sprint before a school deadline

Three to five hours inside a fortnight aimed at one component, usually the individual oral or the Higher Level essay. Bought when one piece is behind and the rest is fine. The block ends with a submission-ready draft in the student's own words and a written list of what was deliberately left alone.

  • Three to five hours in two weeks
  • One named component only
  • Before-and-after scoring on the same draft
  • Explicit note of what was not fixed and why

Single second-opinion read

One hour in which an existing essay or oral outline is marked against the published descriptors and returned, with a short conversation about the three changes that matter most. Families use it when a school's feedback has been brief, or when two providers have given contradictory advice about the same piece.

  • One piece of work, one hour, annotated
  • Three prioritised changes ranked by marks at risk
  • A plain statement of whether paid support is needed at all
  • No continuing booking

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an hour of English A support actually costs in Dubai, by provider model

An IB DP English A Language and Literature tutor in Dubai charges somewhere between AED 45 and AED 650 an hour depending on the model, and the model matters more than the badge. The table below compares the shapes of provider rather than named brands, with the AED bands taken from providers' own published pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, all read in October 2026. The column that decides value is not the rate; it is whether marked written work comes back.

Three of the six providers researched for this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars, a currency Dubai families do not transact in. That opacity is itself a cost: a parent cannot compare what they cannot see, and the first quote they receive becomes the anchor for every judgement afterwards. Publishing the bands here is not generosity. It is the only way the rest of this page's arithmetic makes sense.

Read the table as a shopping list rather than a league table. A student who writes fluently and needs timed practice should buy from the row with marking included and ignore the rest. A student who has not understood what Paper 1 asks needs teaching first, which the lowest band can sometimes supply adequately. A student eight weeks from the May session with three unmarked mocks in a drawer should buy marking only, and quickly.

Monthly packages are also visible in this market, and they are worth reading carefully. Figures seen include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour arrangement run roughly AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Divide any package by the number of hours before comparing it with an hourly rate; the per-hour figure is often higher than it looks.

02

The five variables that move an English A quote up or down

Two families in the same Dubai building, with children in the same class, are routinely quoted rates that differ by a factor of three. The variation is not arbitrary and it is not mostly about the tutor's charisma. Five things move the number, and four of them are inside the family's control, which makes them worth knowing before the first conversation rather than after the third invoice.

The first is whether marking is included. An hour that contains a marked 900-word response consumes close to two hours of the tutor's time, and any honest rate reflects that. The second is level: Higher Level adds a fourth assessed component and a longer essay, so the same weekly arrangement covers more ground and is priced accordingly. The third is urgency. A block booked eight weeks before a school deadline is priced differently from one booked in October, because the tutor is displacing other work and the hours have to be compressed.

The fourth is delivery format, which is the largest single lever in this city. Published in-home bands of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 overlap with online specialist bands of AED 200 to AED 450, but the in-home figure buys a smaller pool of tutors and a fraction of the hour spent in traffic. The fifth is the one families almost never ask about: whether the tutor has marked IB Group 1 work before. A tutor who has not cannot score a script against the descriptors, and a session without a score is a conversation, whatever it costs.

There is a sixth variable that behaves differently, and it belongs in a warning rather than a list. Providers in this market do sell finished coursework, and the price looks competitive against a term of honest sessions. A family comparing quotes should establish early that what is being sold is teaching, marking and feedback on the student's own writing. Anything else is an academic malpractice risk that falls on the student under IB rules, and no saving justifies it.

03

Cost by component: which paid hours earn their fee

English A Language and Literature is four separate assessments with four separate cost profiles, and treating it as a single weekly habit is how families overspend. The table below sets out what a paid hour actually does on each component, roughly how many hours it usually takes, and the market band that applies. The final column is the one that saves money, because it names the point in the course at which the purchase is worth making rather than merely possible.

Paper 1 is the component where paid marking is close to irreplaceable. The text is unseen, the skill is transferable and the only way to build it is to write under time pressure and have the result scored accurately. A student can read about unseen analysis for a term and improve very little; four marked responses with descriptor-level feedback will usually move something. This is the line of the budget to protect first.

At the other end, the set works are the cheapest part of the course to cover and the most commonly bought. A student who has not read a prescribed text does not need a tutor; they need the text and three weeks. Paying for summaries of works the school is already teaching is the single clearest waste in this subject, and any provider who encourages it should be treated with caution. The same is true of generic essay-writing lessons untied to a scored piece of the student's own work.

Two components sit in between and reward narrow, specific purchases. The individual oral stands or falls on whether the global issue is narrow enough to be evidenced by two extracts, which is one hour of hard questioning rather than a term of coaching. The Higher Level essay turns on the line of inquiry, which is likewise a single decision taken early and expensively reversed late. Buy one hour at the decision point in each and you will not need six later.

04

Why marking is the expensive part, and the unseen text is the reason

Paper 1 gives a student a text nobody has prepared them for and asks what the writer is doing and how. Nothing on the paper can be revised in advance. That single design decision determines the economics of the whole course, because it means the only thing worth paying for is the repeated cycle of attempt, accurate score, named correction, next attempt. A tutor who discusses a text with a student is doing something pleasant and almost unmeasurable. A tutor who scores the student's own writing is doing the thing the grade responds to.

Accurate scoring is also genuinely hard, which is why it costs what it costs. The descriptors reward the analysis of specific choices and their effect on a particular audience, and they are unforgiving about general appreciation however well written. Marking against them requires somebody who has internalised the standard, usually by teaching the course or by marking for a board. An intelligent graduate reader without that calibration will give a response a generous mark and a useless commentary, and the family will not discover the problem until a mock.

This is why the cheapest effective purchase in English A is a package of marked scripts with no teaching attached. Four timed responses, scored descriptor by descriptor, with the specific sentence-level fault named each time, is a smaller invoice than a term of weekly hours and a larger movement for most students. It also produces a record: scores on dated scripts that a parent can compare without being able to mark English themselves.

The limit is worth stating. Marking works for students who can already produce a response of roughly the right shape. A student who does not yet know what the question is asking will get little from a score, because they cannot act on it, and for them two or three genuine teaching hours must come first. That diagnosis takes one marked script to make, which is the honest reason the free trial hour exists and why its output is a written statement rather than a sales conversation.

05

A two-year English A budget, sequenced rather than spread

Most Dubai families spend on English A reactively: nothing for a year, then an expensive scramble in the second term of DP2. The sequence below spends roughly the same money in a different order and buys more with it. The principle is simple. Buy teaching early, when habits are cheap to change. Buy decisions at the point they are taken. Buy marking throughout DP2. Buy nothing at all during the two stretches where a tutor adds little.

The AED figures in the table are indicative totals at mid-market specialist rates of roughly AED 200 to AED 300 an hour, which is where a tutor who returns descriptor-level scores generally sits in this market. They are arithmetic on published market bands, not a quotation from us. A family working to a smaller total should cut rows from the bottom of the list rather than reduce the quality of the marking rows, because a cheap mark is worse than no mark; it tells a student something confident and wrong.

The two zero-spend stretches deserve naming, because no provider has any incentive to mention them. The first is the opening months of DP1 once the transition habits are corrected, when the course is reading and the student needs the books rather than a tutor. The second is the fortnight immediately before the written papers, when new teaching cannot land and the useful activity is timed practice the student can do alone with a mark scheme the school already has.

One more piece of context Dubai parents find useful when setting a figure. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. School fees are largely fixed and outside a family's control; tutoring is not. That makes it the education cost most worth planning deliberately, in blocks tied to named components, rather than as an open-ended monthly subscription.

What you should not be paying for in this market

Some of the clearest savings in Dubai come from refusing things that are commonly sold. The first is past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents and grade-boundary tables. These belong to the IB, Cambridge or Pearson and should not be reproduced or supplied as downloads by a tutoring provider; a legitimate tutor references them and points to the official source. Paying for a bundle of copied material is paying for somebody else's copyright risk.

The second is anything resembling an accreditation claim. No tutoring provider should attach the name of a regulator — KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education — or of an examination board to words such as approval, accreditation or authorisation unless it holds that specific permit and can show you the number. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to training institutes with premises, which is a different legal animal from an individual tutor; a provider using that language loosely is either confused or hoping you are. We hold no such approval and do not imply one.

The third is a statistic. Rates in this market are frequently justified with figures that have no sample, no date and no method: satisfaction percentages, average score claims, self-published star ratings. Two researched competitors show different review totals on the same page. A number without an n and a date is a marketing device, and paying a premium because of one is paying for the device.

The fourth is a guarantee. Nobody can promise a grade, a point total or a specific improvement in a subject with two unseen components marked externally, and a refund promise tied to an outcome is a reason for more scepticism rather than less. What a provider can honestly commit to is the process: marking returned in writing, descriptor-level scores, dated artefacts, and a stated fallback when no specialist is free. Those are checkable before you pay and worth more than any promise about results.

07

Online delivery, the in-home premium, and who is permitted to teach

In-home tutoring is what many Dubai families picture when they start looking, and the published bands are roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel priced in. The question worth asking is what the extra money buys in a subject whose assessed work is written. A visiting tutor and an online tutor both read an essay on a screen or a page; one of them has also spent forty minutes on Al Khail Road, and somebody is paying for that. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE at all. Tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we offer only in India, and the Dubai arrangement is one-to-one over live video with the student's own writing shared on screen.

The practical gain is not price alone. The pool of people who have marked IB Group 1 scripts is small, and restricting it to a twenty-minute drive from Mirdif or Al Furjan shrinks it to almost nothing. Families who insist on proximity usually end up paying a specialist rate for a generalist, which is the worst available trade. Online delivery also survives travel, which matters in a city where families are routinely out of the country for several weeks a year and a weekly slot otherwise collapses in July.

There is a legal dimension families should know before paying anyone. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so treat any figure quoted to you as unverified.

One related rule saves money and trouble. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. The idea of hiring your child's own English teacher privately is therefore not a bargain to negotiate; it is an arrangement to decline. An external marker is also more useful, because they read the essay as an unknown examiner will rather than as the person who taught the lesson it came from.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

What a Dubai family pays is partly a function of where they live, because in-home arrangements price travel into the hour and the local supply of Group 1 specialists varies. The notes below record the practical cost effect in each area rather than describing the neighbourhood.

Jumeirah

Short commutes and a dense school cluster, so in-home rates here sit at the lower end of the travel premium. The local tutor pool is mostly primary and IGCSE; Diploma Group 1 specialists are scarce enough that families end up paying a scarcity premium for proximity.

Dubai Marina

High apartment density and easy access, which keeps visiting rates competitive, but parking and building access routinely cost ten minutes a visit. Families here are among the most likely to switch to online once they have compared two quotes for the same component.

Arabian Ranches

Villa communities a long way from the central school belt. Travel is the dominant variable in any in-home quote, and published in-home bands of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 sit near the top of that range by the time a tutor has driven out and back.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer schools, high demand and families often buying two subjects at once. The useful saving here is a shared hour across English A and Theory of Knowledge rather than a discount on the rate itself, which providers in this area rarely offer.

Mirdif

Large catchments and long school runs, so evening slots are compressed into a narrow window and in-demand tutors charge accordingly for it. An online slot after dinner is both cheaper and more reliable than anything booked between four and six.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment living with heavy parking constraints and a working-parent profile. Later evening sessions are the norm, and the premium charged for a 8pm in-home visit is the clearest example in the city of paying for logistics rather than for teaching.

Al Barsha

Several large IB schools within a few kilometres, which makes it one of the few areas where a local Diploma specialist is genuinely findable. Even here the pool is small, and a family needing Higher Level marking usually widens the search beyond the area.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Growing family communities further from the established school cluster. Visiting rates reflect the drive, and the saving from online delivery is larger here than in almost any other part of Dubai for the same quality of tutor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Al Sufouh

The established selective cluster, where Group 1 cohorts are large and school feedback is usually detailed. Families here most often buy a single marked read as a second opinion rather than a weekly block, which is the cheapest useful purchase in this subject.

Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Umm Suqeim

Large IB continuum schools with mixed-ability Group 1 classes. Spending here tends to start earlier, in the first term of DP1, which is also where it is most effective: teaching hours bought at the transition cost less than marking hours bought in DP2.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what you are trying to buy

Send the student's level, the components causing trouble, the next school deadline and any budget ceiling. A stated ceiling produces a better plan than a vague one, because the sequencing changes completely between a four-hour total and a two-year arrangement. Nothing beyond the student's existing school work is needed.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial hour

One hour, online, one-to-one, with no card required. One existing piece of writing is marked against the published descriptors and returned, and you receive a written statement of what the student needs and what it would cost in hours. If the answer is that no paid support is required, that is what the document says.

  3. 03

    Agree hours against named components

Work is booked as hours attached to components rather than as an open monthly habit: four marked Paper 1 scripts, one hour on the oral global issue, one read of the Higher Level draft. The rate is stated per hour before anything is confirmed, with no package that hides the per-hour figure.

  4. 04

Marking returned in writing, every time

Each piece comes back with a score against every descriptor, the sentence that cost the mark identified, and a dated record added to the running file. The work stays in the student's own words; a tutor marks, questions and models, and never supplies text that will be submitted.

  5. 05

Review the record, then cut or continue

At the end of the block the scores are read in sequence. If descriptor marks have moved, the next hours go to the components still at risk. If they have not, the arrangement changes or stops. Continuing to buy weekly hours that the record does not support is the commonest way families overspend in this market.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Published bands, with the source attached

Every AED figure here names the provider and the month it was read, so a family can judge any quote they receive. Three of the six competitors researched for this market publish no price at all; two of the rest quote in dollars. A parent cannot compare what nobody will show them.

Costed by component, not by calendar

Hours are attached to Paper 1 scripts, the oral global issue and the Higher Level line of inquiry, so you can see what you are buying marks for. It also makes the two zero-spend stretches of the course visible, which no provider paid by the month has any reason to mention.

Marking is the product

An hour here includes a response scored against each published descriptor with the sentence that lost the mark named. That is the component of tutoring a Group 1 grade responds to, and it is the one most commonly left out of a cheap rate and charged as an extra in a mid-market one.

No accreditation language we cannot evidence

We hold no KHDA, ADEK, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval and never imply one. A KHDA Educational Services Permit belongs to training institutes with premises. Providers in this market use that language loosely, and it is the single most misleading phrase available to a page like this one.

The honesty line is priced in

A tutor reads, marks, questions, models and records. Finished coursework is sold in this market at prices that look competitive against honest sessions; under IB rules the consequence falls on the student. Anything we will not do is written here rather than discovered during a call.

A stated fallback instead of a placement

When no Group 1 specialist is free for the slot a family needs, we say so and offer a different time, a marked-script package without live teaching, or a wait. Placing a generalist at a specialist rate is how the published upper bands in this market get justified, and it is not something we will do.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does an English A Language and Literature tutor charge per hour in Dubai?+

Published rates in this market run from roughly AED 45 to AED 650 an hour. Budget platforms advertise from AED 45 to AED 65, qualified online subject tutors broadly AED 150 to AED 300, IB specialists around AED 200 to AED 450 and above, in-home visits AED 180 to AED 500 with travel priced in, and premium named tutoring up to AED 650. Those are other providers' own published figures read in October 2026, including Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. What separates the bands is whether marked written work comes back, not the badge on the website.

Why do two quotes for the same English A support differ by three times?+

Five things move the number. Whether marking is included, because scoring a 900-word response consumes close to two hours of a tutor's time. Whether the student is at Higher Level, which adds a fourth component. How urgent the booking is, since compressed blocks displace other work. Whether delivery is in-home, which prices travel into the hour. And whether the tutor has ever marked IB Group 1 work, which determines if a score means anything. Four of those five are inside a family's control, which is why asking about them before the first quote changes the price.

Is it cheaper to buy a block of hours or pay one session at a time?+

Per hour, a block is usually quoted slightly lower, and that is not the main reason to prefer one. A block tied to a named component forces both sides to state what the hours are for, which prevents the open-ended weekly habit that is the commonest overspend in this subject. Paying session by session suits a student who needs occasional marking and already works well with their school. Avoid monthly packages whose per-hour figure is not shown: divide the total by the hours before comparing, because the real rate is often above the headline.

Does marking a Paper 1 response cost more than an hour of teaching?+

It costs more of the tutor's time, so an honest rate reflects it. A timed response of around 900 words takes real time to score against every descriptor and to annotate at sentence level, and that work happens before the session rather than during it. The trade is still favourable for most students, because a marked script produces a specific, dated, actionable finding while an hour of discussion usually produces a pleasant conversation. For a student who does not yet understand what the paper asks, teaching has to come first; one marked script reveals which case you are in.

Which part of the English A course is worth paying for first?+

Marked practice on the unseen Paper 1, because nothing about that paper can be revised in advance and the only route to the skill is write, score accurately, correct, repeat. Protect that line of the budget before anything else. The next best purchases are single hours at two decision points: narrowing the individual oral global issue before extracts are chosen, and pressure-testing the Higher Level essay line of inquiry when the question is set. Both are cheap early and expensive to reverse late, which is the opposite of how most families sequence their spending.

Our school teaches English A well. What are we actually paying a tutor for?+

Volume and calibration of marking. A Dubai Group 1 teacher with a full timetable and a large cohort cannot score every timed response at descriptor level for every student, however good they are. A paid hour buys that attention on your child's own writing, plus a second reader who has no investment in the lesson the essay came from. If the school is already returning detailed descriptor-level marks and the student is acting on them, the honest answer is that you do not need a tutor, and a trial hour will say so in writing.

Does the Higher Level essay need its own budget line?+

Two hours, placed carefully, usually covers it. The first goes on the line of inquiry at the point the question is set, because a question that is too broad caps the mark before any writing happens and is painful to change later. The second goes on one marked read of the near-final draft. A third read rarely repays itself. At mid-market Dubai specialist rates of roughly AED 200 to AED 300 an hour, that is a small, defined cost against a component that carries real weight at Higher Level and is frequently left to the last fortnight.

How many hours does a student usually need before the individual oral?+

One to two at the decision stage, plus one rehearsal, is the common pattern. The oral stands or falls on whether the global issue is narrow enough that two extracts can genuinely evidence it, and that is a questioning exercise rather than a teaching one: an hour of someone asking what the issue excludes until it survives. Rehearsal coaching bought before the issue is settled is money spent polishing something that will have to be rebuilt. Families who get the order right usually spend less in total and arrive calmer.

Is a cheaper tutor who has never marked IB work a saving?+

Not in this subject. The descriptors reward analysis of specific choices and their effect on a particular audience, and they are unforgiving about general appreciation however fluently written. A reader without that calibration gives a generous mark and a vague commentary, and the student acts on both. The error surfaces at a mock, usually in the second term of DP2, when there is no time left to rebuild. A cheap mark is worse than no mark, because it tells a student something confident and wrong.

Do tutoring rates in Dubai rise closer to the May session?+

Availability tightens rather than list prices changing, and the effect on a family is the same. Specialists fill their slots by January, so a block booked in March is competing for compressed hours and is priced accordingly, if it can be found at all. Bestimate's monthly estimates put specialist exam-year support at roughly AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for weekly sessions, against AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Booking the marking line of the budget in the first term of DP2 is both cheaper and more likely to exist when you need it.

Should we ask a Dubai provider whether their rate includes VAT?+

Yes, and ask it in writing. We will not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees here, because doing so responsibly requires a Federal Tax Authority citation and this page does not have one. What a family can reasonably require of any provider is clarity about their own quoted figure: whether the number is final, what it covers, and whether a tax registration number exists. A provider who cannot answer plainly about their own invoice is telling you something useful about how the rest of the arrangement will run.

What is the cheapest useful second opinion on an English A essay?+

A single marked read. One hour in which an existing essay is scored against each published descriptor and returned annotated, with a short conversation about the three changes that matter most. It costs one hour at the specialist band rather than a term at it, and it answers the question most families actually have, which is whether the school's feedback is right and whether paid support is needed at all. Several families use it once, act on it, and never book anything else. That is a good outcome.

Is small-group English A tuition worth the saving in Dubai?+

For teaching a shared skill, sometimes. For marking, no. A group of two to four students is cheaper per student and works adequately when everybody needs the same explanation of what Paper 1 asks for. It stops working the moment the need becomes individual, which in this subject is almost immediately, because the sentence that costs your child a mark is not the sentence costing the student beside them. Group marking produces a common commentary rather than descriptor scores on an individual script, and the grade responds to the latter.

We have a fixed total of about AED 3,000 for the year. Where should it go?+

At mid-market specialist rates of roughly AED 200 to AED 300 an hour that is ten to fifteen hours, and the sequence matters more than the total. Spend two or three hours early on the transition habits, one or two at the individual oral decision point, then put the bulk into marked Paper 1 scripts across DP2 at about one a fortnight, keeping two hours in reserve for the Higher Level draft. Buy no set-work summaries and no new teaching in the final fortnight. That order consistently produces more movement than the same money spread evenly.

Does IB Gram send an English A tutor to our address in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not arrange home visits anywhere in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service we run only in India. English A support for Dubai families is delivered one-to-one over live video, with the student's own essay shared on screen while it is annotated. For a marking-led subject that removes a cost rather than a benefit: no part of the hour is spent in traffic, and the family chooses from people who have scored IB Group 1 scripts rather than from whoever is within driving distance.

Price the marking first, then the rest

If you are weighing quotes for English A Language and Literature in Dubai, the useful first step costs nothing and takes an hour. Send one piece of your child's recent writing and take the free trial: it comes back scored against each published descriptor, with the sentence that cost the mark identified and a written note of how many hours the real work needs and what it would cost at a stated rate. You will also be told plainly if the answer is no paid support at all, which happens more often than this market admits. Decide after you have the document, not before.
