IB DP Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired for one of three reasons: a Higher Level subject has slipped, an Internal Assessment is drifting, or a predicted grade has arrived lower than the family expected. IB Gram matches Abu Dhabi students to a specialist in the exact subject and level, and every lesson runs one-to-one over live video rather than at an address in the emirate. The first lesson is free, and it exists to find out which of those three problems you actually have.

  • Matched by subject and level, not by postcode or driving distance
  • A free first lesson that returns a written diagnosis, not a sales call
  • Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time around an Abu Dhabi school day
  • Tutors review and feed back on work; they never produce assessed work

What the Diploma asks, and why a general tutor is the wrong purchase

The IB Diploma Programme is not six separate courses with a project attached. It is six subjects, three of them normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the CAS requirement, all assessed against published criteria rather than against the class. That structure is why a tutor who is excellent at maths generally and unfamiliar with the Diploma can run twenty pleasant sessions and change nothing. The marks in a Diploma subject are allocated to named components with named criteria, and a student loses them in identifiable places: a command term read as a different command term, a conclusion that does not reference the research question, an exploration that describes rather than analyses, a Paper 2 essay that answers the question the student revised instead of the one on the page.

Abu Dhabi families arrive at this page from a narrow set of situations. A DP1 student has moved from a British Year 11 and has met criterion-referenced marking for the first time. A DP2 student has had a mock returned in the high 50s and a predicted grade of 4 in a subject the university offer depends on. A student has written an Internal Assessment that reads well and scores badly, because readability is not one of the criteria. In each case the useful question is not how many hours to buy. It is which component is leaking marks, and whether the leak is knowledge, technique or process.

That is what a specialist can establish and a generalist cannot. A Diploma tutor who teaches Chemistry HL has read the current assessment outline, has marked the kind of exploration your child has written, and can look at eight pages of work and say which criterion is costing the marks. The answer is often unwelcome and specific: the data is fine, the uncertainty treatment is not; the essay argues well but never engages a counter-claim; the Paper 3 answers lose marks on units rather than on chemistry.

Delivery matters less than people assume once the subject match is right. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an address anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a Diploma student in Abu Dhabi that is a better outcome than it sounds, because the constraint on in-home tutoring is geography. A family in Al Raha Gardens looking for a Visual Arts HL specialist is choosing from whoever will drive to Al Raha Gardens on a Tuesday at five. The same family choosing online is selecting from the whole pool, and a Diploma grade responds to subject expertise far more than it responds to a tutor being in the room.

The rest of this page is written to be used rather than skimmed. It sets out the award conditions the IB publishes, the places Diploma marks actually leak and what a single session can change about each, what the Abu Dhabi market charges for a Diploma hour and who charges it, the ethics rule that governs which teachers may tutor your child, and the line a paid tutor may not cross around an Internal Assessment. Where a figure belongs to a source, the source is named. Where a date belongs to the IB, we tell you to confirm it with your child's Diploma coordinator rather than trust a number on a tutoring page.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Abu Dhabi runs the full IB continuum, and the Diploma sits at the end of it. These are the programmes a tutor in this emirate is asked about, with what each one changes about the way support has to be organised.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, normally three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject carries external papers and at least one internally assessed component marked against published criteria and then moderated. The grade a student receives is a conversion of component marks, which is why knowing which component is weak matters more than knowing the overall grade.

Abu Dhabi has Diploma cohorts at schools across the island and the Khalifa City corridor, including Al Bateen Academy, Raha International School and Repton School Abu Dhabi. ADEK licenses and inspects these schools and publishes its own inspection outcomes. A single Diploma cohort in this emirate is often small, which means a Higher Level set of four or five students and a timetable that cannot easily be rearranged around one child.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, reported on a 1-8 scale. There are no external papers until the optional eAssessment at the end of MYP 5, so the whole record is internal. MYP marking trains a student in criterion-referenced thinking, which is the single most useful preparation for the Diploma and the thing British and Indian transfer students have never met.

Abu Dhabi MYP students who continue into the same school's Diploma arrive with the marking language already in place. The friction shows in students who join an Abu Dhabi IB school from a CBSE or British school at Year 10 or 11 and sit their first criterion-marked task with no idea what the criteria are asking. That is a four-to-six-session problem if it is caught in DP1 and a much larger one if it is not.

PYPAges 3-12

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry, no formal examinations, and reporting against year-group expectations rather than against percentages. Support at this stage is about reading fluency, number sense and the habit of asking a question before answering it, which is the skill the Diploma later assesses under Theory of Knowledge.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run PYP, MYP and DP on one campus, so a family can stay inside the continuum from three to nineteen. Parents in Al Raha Gardens and on Saadiyat Island most often ask about PYP support when a child moves in mid-year from a system with weekly spelling tests and meets an inquiry timetable instead.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses taken alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. It is far less common than the Diploma in the UAE but it exists, and a student on it still sits the same Diploma subject papers for the courses they take.

Abu Dhabi families usually encounter the Career-related Programme when a student is strong in two Diploma subjects and struggling across six. Any school discussion about moving from DP to CP, or to courses rather than the full Diploma, belongs with the Diploma coordinator first; a tutor's job is to tell you honestly whether the subject in question is recoverable in the time left.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Diploma match is made subject by subject and level by level. These are the Diploma subjects Abu Dhabi families most often ask for, with what each one assesses and where the marks tend to be lost.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency, calculus and proof, assessed across papers with and without a calculator plus a mathematical exploration. Marks leak on method shown rather than answer reached, on notation, and on explorations that compute correctly but never explain why the mathematics was the right choice.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use, with heavier emphasis on interpreting output than on deriving it. Students who switched here from Analysis often carry the habit of hand-manipulating expressions and lose time; the exploration needs real data and a defensible model, not a tidy one.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics, fields, waves and modern physics, with extended-response questions that reward a stated principle before any arithmetic. The common leak is unit and significant-figure handling in the data-based questions, and explorations whose uncertainty analysis is written after the experiment rather than designed into it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. Organic is where Abu Dhabi students most often ask for help, usually because mechanisms have been memorised as pictures rather than as electron movement. Explorations lose marks on a research question too broad to control.

Biology

HL and SL

Cells, physiology, genetics, ecology and evolution, with command terms doing much of the work. 'Outline' and 'explain' carry different mark allocations, and a student who writes an essay for a two-mark outline runs out of time. Statistical treatment in the exploration is the other recurring gap.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, assessed through papers and three commentaries drawn from published news articles. The commentaries are where marks are won: a correctly drawn and correctly labelled diagram that is then actually used in the analysis, rather than decorating it.

Business Management

HL and SL

Organisational structure, marketing, operations and finance, with a case study released ahead of the examination at Higher Level. Students lose marks by describing a tool instead of applying it to the firm in front of them, and by ignoring the quantitative content in a subject many assume is essay-only.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Non-literary texts and literary works, assessed through a guided analysis, a comparative essay, the individual oral and the higher-level essay. The individual oral fails on the global issue being asserted rather than demonstrated through the two extracts chosen.

Arabic

A and B, HL and SL

Available as a language A for first-language speakers and as a language B for acquirers. The route matters: a strong conversational speaker placed in language A can lose marks on literary analysis and register, while the same student in language B may be sitting below their ceiling.

Psychology

HL and SL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches with research methods throughout. Marks leak on studies cited without the detail that makes them evidence, and on the internally assessed experimental study where the inferential statistics are chosen before the design is settled.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

A comparative study, a process portfolio and an exhibition, all internally assessed against criteria and then moderated. The process portfolio is the component Abu Dhabi students most often under-serve, because it rewards documented experimentation rather than finished pieces.

Computer Science

HL and SL

System fundamentals, computational thinking, programming and a solution developed for a real client. The solution loses marks when the client is fictional in practice, because the criteria ask for evidence of consultation, testing and iteration against a stated success criteria list.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every Diploma request that reaches us from Abu Dhabi. All three run one-to-one over live video, and the difference between them is rhythm rather than medium.

Weekly subject hour

One subject, one level, one fixed hour a week with the same tutor through the year. This is the format that moves a Higher Level grade, because it allows work to be set, attempted, marked and revisited on a predictable cycle. It is also the only format in which a tutor builds a usable picture of how your child thinks under time pressure.

  • Same tutor, same slot, same subject for the whole term
  • Work set at the end of each session and marked before the next
  • A short written note after every session naming what moved
  • Scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school run in Gulf Standard Time

Internal Assessment supervision

A shorter cycle of sessions timed around the school's own internal deadlines, focused on the criteria for one internally assessed component. The tutor reads what the student has written, explains against which criterion the marks are sitting, and sets the next revision for the student to do. Nothing is written for the student at any point.

  • Built around the school's draft deadlines, not ours
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own text
  • Research-question narrowing before any data is collected
  • A clear record of what feedback was given, and when

Pre-examination intensive

A dense block in the weeks before mocks or the examination session, usually two or three sessions a week on one subject. Timed past questions under conditions, marked against the published criteria, with the same error chased across several papers until it stops appearing. Useful, and far less useful than the weekly hour started eight months earlier.

  • Timed conditions from the first session, not the last
  • One recurring error tracked across several papers
  • Marking against published criteria rather than a percentage
  • Honest advice when a block cannot cover the gap in time

"IB DP tutor in Abu Dhabi", answered literally

  • One subject, one level, one specialist: that is the unit of hire
  • Market band for IB specialist tutoring: AED 200-450 per hour (Bestimate, TutorChase)
  • Delivery is one-to-one online; we do not visit UAE addresses
  • The free first lesson returns a written diagnosis you can act on

An IB DP tutor in Abu Dhabi is a subject specialist who teaches one Diploma subject at one level and is hired because a specific component is losing marks. The market rate for that specialism runs roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, according to Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate table and TutorChase's published AED 270 figure. IB Gram matches Abu Dhabi students to that specialist and delivers the lessons one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to addresses in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India.

What the search usually does not mean is a tutor for the Diploma in general. Nobody teaches the Diploma in general. A student who is losing marks in Chemistry HL and holding steady elsewhere needs a Chemistry HL teacher, and the fact that a candidate takes six subjects is a reason to be precise about which one you are buying for, not a reason to buy a generalist. Families who hire a generalist usually discover the problem in week five, when the sessions have been pleasant and the mock has not moved.

The second thing the search often conceals is a question about process rather than content. A surprising share of Diploma problems in Abu Dhabi are not knowledge gaps at all. They are a student who revises by rereading, a student who writes a Paper 2 essay from a memorised plan regardless of the question, or a student whose Internal Assessment is three weeks late because the research question is still unresolved. Those are fixable, and they are fixable faster than a knowledge gap, but only if someone names them first.

That is the purpose of the free first lesson. It is not a trial of rapport. It is a diagnostic: the tutor looks at marked work, asks the student to attempt something under time, and sends you a written note saying which component is leaking and roughly what it will take. If the answer is that the problem belongs with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than with a tutor, the note says that too.

02

How a Diploma is awarded, and the conditions that fail a candidate

Most Abu Dhabi parents know the Diploma is marked out of 45 and that 24 is the pass mark. Far fewer know that the total is not the only condition. The IB publishes a set of requirements for the award of the Diploma, and a candidate can reach 24 points and still not receive one. That is the single most useful thing to understand before you spend money on tutoring, because it tells you which subject actually needs the hour.

The conditions work as floors rather than as a sum. There is a minimum total. There are separate minimums for points earned at Higher Level and at Standard Level. There are limits on how many low grades a candidate may carry, and a single lowest-band grade in any subject is disqualifying on its own. The Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay combination carries its own condition, and the CAS requirement has to be met regardless of academic performance. Exact wording and current thresholds should be read from the IB or confirmed with your child's Diploma coordinator, because the published requirements are revised.

The practical consequence for a family in Abu Dhabi is that the right subject to tutor is often not the one with the lowest grade. A student sitting on a 2 in one Higher Level subject and 6s elsewhere has a floor problem, and every hour should go to the floor. A student with straight 5s and a predicted 34 has a ceiling problem, and the hours should go where a 5 is closest to a 6. Those are opposite tutoring plans, and parents who buy hours before establishing which situation they are in frequently buy the wrong ones.

The core is where Abu Dhabi families most often under-invest. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together carry a small number of points, which makes them easy to treat as optional. They are not optional: the combination carries a condition of its own, and an Extended Essay left until the spring of DP2 competes directly with revision for six subjects. Starting it on the school's published schedule is worth more than any number of tutoring hours spent rescuing it later.

Where Diploma marks leak, and what one session actually fixes

Marks do not drain evenly out of a Diploma subject. They leave through a small number of identifiable holes, and most of those holes are technique rather than content. This is the most useful table on this page for a parent deciding whether to spend money, because it answers the real question: what does one hour change, and how would I know it had.

The pattern holds across subjects. A student who loses marks on command terms loses them in every paper, in every subject, every time. A student whose conclusions do not reference the research question loses them in every internally assessed component. A student who writes the essay they prepared rather than the one asked loses them in every Paper 2. These are single, teachable errors with large and repeated costs, and they are exactly what a specialist spots in forty minutes of looking at marked work.

Content gaps behave differently. A genuine hole in organic chemistry or in calculus takes several sessions, a set of worked problems and a second pass a fortnight later to confirm it has closed. Parents who expect a knowledge gap to close in one session are usually disappointed, and parents who expect a technique error to take ten sessions usually overpay. Knowing which one you have is most of the value of a diagnostic first lesson.

The right evidence that a session worked is the next marked piece, not the student's mood. Ask for the marked work. A tutor who says the session went well and cannot point at a changed mark, a changed criterion comment or a changed timing on a past paper has not given you anything you can check. That standard is easy to apply and it filters out a great deal of what the Abu Dhabi tutoring market sells.

ADEK's ethics rule, and why your child's own teacher is not the answer

  • Press-reported ADEK ethics rules bar staff from paid tutoring of their own school's students
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; apply via mohre.gov.ae
  • No fine amounts are published, so treat any quoted figure with scepticism

The most common first instinct in Abu Dhabi is to ask the subject teacher to tutor privately. It is understandable: that teacher knows the child, knows the cohort, and probably marks the internal components. It is also the one route that is specifically closed, and parents are frequently surprised by how firmly.

Gulf News has reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press reporting of the policy rather than the policy document, so verify the current wording against ADEK's own published material before relying on it. The direction of travel is not in doubt, and the reason for the rule is obvious once stated: a teacher who both tutors a student privately and marks that student's internally assessed work sits in an unmanageable conflict.

Separately from the school's rules, private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work rather than informal work. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone.

For a parent, that produces a short checklist. Ask any prospective tutor whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition permit and under which category. Ask whether they teach at your child's school, and if so, stop. Treat a tutor who tells you a permit is unnecessary, or who quotes you a specific fine figure, as having told you something useful about their reliability. None of this is a reason to avoid hiring; it is a reason to ask two questions before you do.

05

What a Diploma hour costs around Abu Dhabi

Three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency an Abu Dhabi family transacts in. So here are the market bands in dirhams, with who publishes them. These are market rates, not IB Gram's price list: our own model starts with a free lesson and a consultation, and the number that follows depends on the subject, the level and how rare the specialism is.

The bands are wide for a reason. At the bottom sit university students and generalist online tutors; EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. In the middle sit qualified subject tutors working online, where Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. At the top sit IB specialists, where Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts AED 200 to 450 or more and TutorChase publishes AED 270; named or examiner-level tutors reach AED 650, which is BartyED's published figure. In-home visiting rates sit above the equivalent online rate because travel is inside the price, and Bestimate's in-home band of AED 180 to 350 climbs to AED 500 for specialist home tutors.

For a Diploma specifically, the number moves on three things. The level moves it most: a Higher Level specialist in a thinly staffed subject costs more than a Standard Level generalist, everywhere. The component moves it next: Internal Assessment supervision is slow, criterion-driven work and is usually priced above routine content teaching. And timing moves it last, because the market around Abu Dhabi tightens in the weeks before mocks and again before the May session, which is when availability rather than price becomes the binding constraint.

Monthly package rates are worth asking about because they change the arithmetic. Published packages in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Whatever you are quoted, ask whether it covers marking between sessions, because unmarked work is the most expensive saving in tutoring.

Higher Level choices and the university file a DP2 student opens

Abu Dhabi has a serious university sector of its own, and a growing number of Diploma students here apply locally as well as abroad. That changes the Higher Level conversation, because a subject combination is a door that closes quietly in DP1 and cannot be reopened in DP2. The commonest regret we hear from Abu Dhabi families is not a grade. It is a Higher Level choice made at fifteen that removed a course at eighteen.

The rule of thumb is that competitive quantitative degrees want to see the mathematics at Higher Level, and often a named science with it. Engineering programmes typically expect Higher Level Mathematics and usually Physics. Medicine and the health sciences typically expect Chemistry and frequently Biology at Higher Level. Economics and finance degrees vary, but an increasing number specify Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation. None of those are universal and all of them change, so the only safe move is to read the admissions page of the specific university and the specific programme, every year.

What a tutor can genuinely contribute here is narrower than a consultant's pitch and more useful. A subject specialist can tell you whether your child is realistically a Higher Level candidate in that subject, based on how they handle the hardest third of the course rather than on how they feel about it. That judgement, made in DP1 term one, is worth more than any number of later hours. It is also the judgement a school is sometimes slow to volunteer, because a school is managing a timetable as well as a student.

The equivalency file is the other piece Abu Dhabi families ask about. Students who finish an international qualification and want to enrol at a UAE university generally need their certificate equivalated by the Ministry of Education. For the British track the requirements are published: five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency can be shown with IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing, and mathematics with at least 450 in SAT Math. No IB points threshold is published in that source, so we do not print one; read it on moe.gov.ae or ask the attestation authority directly.

Two Diploma years counted backwards from a May session

Abu Dhabi schools sit the May session. Working the two years backwards from it is the single most useful planning exercise a Diploma family can do, and almost nothing in the tutoring market does it. The table below is deliberately relative rather than dated, for a reason worth stating: IB session and results dates in this project are not verified from the IB itself, because ibo.org blocks automated retrieval. Take every actual date from your child's Diploma coordinator or from ibo.org directly.

The shape of the two years is stable even when the dates move. DP1 is where subject and level choices are made and where the Extended Essay topic is settled; the autumn of DP2 is where the internally assessed components are drafted and submitted internally; the spring of DP2 is mocks, predicted grades and revision, in that order and in a very short window. The reason families feel ambushed in February of DP2 is that four things arrive at once: Internal Assessment final deadlines, mock results, university decisions and the start of serious revision.

The mistake that costs most is treating the internally assessed components as the DP2 spring's problem. They are not. In most Abu Dhabi schools the internal deadlines for Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge components fall in the autumn of DP2 or earlier, and they are internal deadlines set by the school rather than by the IB. A student who meets them has a clear spring. A student who misses them spends the revision window finishing coursework, which is how a predicted 36 becomes a final 31.

Used properly, the backward count also tells you when tutoring is cheap and when it is unavailable. Specialist tutors in thin subjects are bookable in September and scarce in March. A family that identifies a Higher Level weakness in DP1 term two is buying from a full market. The same family identifying it six weeks before the session is buying whatever is left, at whatever that costs, which is the real price of waiting.

What a paid Diploma tutor may not touch

This section exists because one of the pages competing for this search sells finished Internal Assessments. It is worth being explicit about the line, because a parent under pressure in February of DP2 is exactly the person such an offer is designed for, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the seller.

The IB's academic-honesty rules require that assessed work be the student's own. A tutor may teach the content, explain the criteria, model the technique on a different example, ask hard questions about a draft, and tell a student plainly that a paragraph does not do what the criterion asks. A tutor may not supply text that ends up in the submission, restructure a draft into its final form, select the data, or hand over a finished component. The distinction is not subtle in practice: feedback points at the student's work, and production replaces it.

The practical test we use with Abu Dhabi families is the authorship test. If the student could not explain, unprompted, why a paragraph is in the Internal Assessment and what it is doing for the argument, then the paragraph is not theirs, whatever the route by which it arrived. Any tutor whose feedback would fail that test is creating an academic-misconduct risk for your child, and a school's investigation falls on the candidate.

It is also worth knowing what cannot legitimately be supplied as material. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are copyright works. A tutor should cite and link the official sources and work from them, not distribute copies. A tutor offering a library of unreleased material is offering something that is a problem for everyone involved, including your child.

The Abu Dhabi tutor pool, and what happens when a Higher Level is rare

Abu Dhabi's Diploma population is smaller than Dubai's and spread over a wider area, which has one concrete consequence: for common subjects there is depth, and for uncommon ones there is almost none. Mathematics, the three sciences, English A and Economics are well covered. Visual Arts HL, Music, Film, Design Technology, Global Politics, Philosophy and the less common language A options are not, and a family searching locally for those will spend weeks finding nobody.

This is where online delivery stops being a compromise and becomes the whole point. A family in Mohammed Bin Zayed City looking for a Film HL specialist who will drive to Mohammed Bin Zayed City at 6pm on a Wednesday is looking at a pool of roughly zero. The same family looking online is choosing from every Film HL teacher available at that hour anywhere, and the match is made on subject expertise rather than on commute tolerance. For thin subjects, that is the difference between support and no support.

We would rather disclose the limit than conceal it, because every competitor in this market conceals it. If no tutor with the right subject and level is available at the hours you need, we say so, and we say what the alternative is: a different hour, a different start date, or a specialist based outside the UAE teaching over the same live video link on Gulf Standard Time. What we will not do is put a generalist in front of a Higher Level student and let you find out in week five.

One more Abu Dhabi-specific point about scheduling. The school run and the bridge traffic on and off the island decide when a session can start, not the calendar. Families in Khalifa City, Shakhbout City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City routinely cannot start before 5.30pm on a weekday, and Friday and Saturday blocks work better for them than weekday evenings. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar slots or to the late morning, and the tutor's own schedule is adjusted rather than the family's.

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Diploma families are spread across the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and the newer mainland communities. Where you live does not change which tutor you can reach online, but it does change the school your child attends and the hour a session can realistically start.

Saadiyat Island

Home to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and within reach of New York University Abu Dhabi. Families here are often on two-to-four-year postings, and the Diploma question is frequently about transferring a part-finished programme between countries.

Al Reem Island

Repton School Abu Dhabi and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi sit here, with a dense residential tower population. Sessions tend to start early evening because the bridge traffic off the island decides when a student is actually home.

Khalifa City

A large villa community feeding several international schools, including Al Yasmina Academy and GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi. Diploma students here commonly come from an American-curriculum middle school and meet Higher Level depth for the first time.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Raha International School runs the full IB continuum nearby, so this is one of the few Abu Dhabi areas where a DP2 student has often been in the same programme since PYP. The requests here lean towards Higher Level subject depth rather than marking language.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

The older island neighbourhoods, with Al Bateen Academy and the American Community School of Abu Dhabi close by. Short commutes mean a 4pm session is realistic here, which matters in the autumn of DP2 when daylight and energy both run short.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

The British School Al Khubairat and Abu Dhabi International School draw heavily from these streets. Many students take IGCSE here and then move to a Diploma elsewhere, which produces a specific transition problem in DP1 term one.

Yas Island and West Yas

A newer residential population with school capacity added in the last few years. Diploma cohorts are small, so a student taking an unusual Higher Level may be one of two in the school and effectively self-teaching parts of the course.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Dense mainland communities with a long commute to the island schools. A session starting before 5.30pm is often unrealistic, and families here are the most likely to ask for weekend blocks instead of weekday hours.

Masdar City and Al Falah

Khalifa University's campus and a growing family population. Diploma students here frequently have an engineering or science trajectory in mind, which makes the Higher Level Mathematics and Physics combination the live question rather than the grade itself.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The island and Saadiyat

Abu Dhabi's older established schools and the newer Saadiyat campuses. Several run the Diploma; others run A-Levels or an American diploma alongside Advanced Placement, which is worth knowing before you compare one child's workload to a neighbour's.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

The corridor where most of Abu Dhabi's newer international capacity sits. Raha International School runs PYP, MYP and DP; the others in this cluster run British or American programmes, so a Diploma student here may be travelling across the city to reach an IB cohort.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • The International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi
  • Emirates National Schools

Mainland and Mussafah

Larger-roll schools serving the mainland communities, mostly British, Indian or American curriculum rather than IB. Families here often take IGCSE locally and then look at a Diploma for sixth form, which is the transition this page's DP1 section is written for.

  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Indian School
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named here as context for where Abu Dhabi Diploma students study. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school or group is implied, and inspection outcomes should be read on ADEK's own published listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the level and the component

Not 'IB help' but 'Chemistry HL, the exploration is drifting and the mock was 48 per cent'. That one sentence determines which specialist you are matched with, and it is the difference between a useful first lesson and a pleasant one. Attach the most recent marked work if you have it.

  2. 02

A free first lesson that is a diagnosis

The tutor reads the marked work, asks your child to attempt something under time, and establishes whether the problem is knowledge, technique or process. You receive a written note naming the leaking component and what it will take. If the answer is that this belongs with the school, the note says so.

  3. 03

Agree a rhythm and a review point

A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, work set at the end of each session and marked before the next, and an agreed point four to six weeks out at which you look at evidence rather than impressions. The review point matters more than the rate you negotiate.

  4. 04

Check the evidence, not the atmosphere

At the review, ask for the marked work. Per-question marks, criterion comments and paper completion times are the signals that move first. A tutor who cannot show you a changed mark or a changed criterion comment after six weeks has not given you something you can check.

  5. 05

Change the plan when the evidence says to

Sometimes the evidence says the subject is fine and a different one is the problem. Sometimes it says the Higher Level is not realistic and the conversation belongs with the Diploma coordinator. Both are useful outcomes, and both are better than renewing a plan because it has become habit.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on subject, not on driving distance

An in-home tutor in Abu Dhabi is chosen from whoever will travel to your community at the hour you need. Online, the pool is every specialist available at that hour. For a Higher Level subject the difference in expertise is larger than any difference the room makes.

The delivery model is stated, not implied

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. Two pages ranking for this search route UAE parents to an overseas phone number without saying where the tutor is.

Prices on this page belong to their sources

Every AED figure here is attributed to the company or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. We do not present market bands as our own price list, and we do not publish a figure we cannot point at a source for.

The academic-honesty line is written down

Tutors teach, mark and give feedback on the student's own work. Nothing that reaches an assessed submission comes from a tutor. That boundary is on the page because one page competing for this search sells finished Internal Assessments, and the consequence of that falls on the candidate.

Coverage limits are disclosed before you commit

If no specialist in your subject and level is free at the hours you need, we say so and name the alternative. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is why families discover it in week five rather than in week one.

Regulatory facts are cited, not asserted

ADEK licenses Abu Dhabi private schools; the MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and claims none, and we link the official source so you can read it yourself.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How many points does my child need to pass the IB Diploma?+

The Diploma is marked out of 45 and the published minimum total is 24 points, but the total is not the only condition. The IB also sets minimums for points earned at Higher Level and at Standard Level, limits on how many low grades a candidate may carry, a separate condition on the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay combination, and completion of CAS. A candidate can reach 24 and still not be awarded the Diploma because of one of those floors. Read the current requirements from the IB or confirm them with your child's Diploma coordinator, because the wording is revised.

Can an IB DP tutor in Abu Dhabi help with more than one Higher Level subject?+

One tutor, one subject, one level is the right unit. Diploma subjects are assessed against separate published criteria, and a tutor's value comes from having marked that specific component many times. Where a student needs two subjects, we match two specialists rather than stretching one. That sounds like an upsell and is the opposite: most families discover after a diagnostic first lesson that only one subject actually needs weekly hours, and the second needs three sessions on technique. Buying two tutors for two subjects is also cheaper than buying twenty ineffective hours from one.

Is my child's own teacher at an Abu Dhabi school allowed to tutor him privately?+

Press reporting of ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff who tutor outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own published policy. The underlying reason is a conflict of interest: a teacher who tutors a student privately and also marks that student's internally assessed work cannot be independent about either.

What does an IB DP tutor cost per hour around Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates for IB specialist tutoring run roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour; that band comes from Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Qualified subject tutors working online sit around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Budget and university-student tutors advertise from AED 33 to 65. In-home visits run higher because travel sits inside the rate. Those are market figures read in October 2026, not our price list; ours starts with a free lesson and a consultation.

Which Higher Level subjects do Abu Dhabi universities expect for engineering?+

Engineering programmes typically expect Higher Level Mathematics and usually Higher Level Physics, and a student who takes Mathematics only at Standard Level closes several doors in DP1 without noticing. That is a general pattern rather than a rule, and requirements change year to year. Read the admissions page for the specific programme at the specific university, including Khalifa University if your child is applying locally, and read it again in DP2. A tutor's useful contribution here is an honest view of whether your child can carry the subject at Higher Level, which is a DP1 judgement.

My daughter is in DP1 and already behind. When is the latest useful start?+

DP1 is the best time to start and the time families most often skip, because the grades do not count yet and the pressure is low. A weakness identified in DP1 term two is cheap to fix and specialists are available. The same weakness identified six weeks before the session is expensive and the market is thin. There is no point at which starting is useless, but the honest answer is that what a tutor can achieve narrows sharply once internal deadlines and revision are competing. Ask for a diagnosis before buying hours, whenever you start.

Do you cover Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay as well as subjects?+

Yes, as process and argument coaching rather than production. For Theory of Knowledge that means exploring knowledge questions, modelling analysis on prompts other than the one your child has chosen, and asking whether a claim is actually defended. For the Extended Essay it means narrowing the research question, pressure-testing sources and teaching argument structure. The supervisor appointed by the school remains the person who oversees the process and signs it off. Nothing a tutor contributes reaches the submitted text, and any tutor offering otherwise is creating a misconduct risk for your child.

How much do Internal Assessments count across six Diploma subjects?+

Each subject carries at least one internally assessed component, marked by the subject teacher against published criteria and then moderated by the IB. The weighting differs by subject and level, which is why a parent cannot reason about them as a single block. What they share is timing: in most Abu Dhabi schools the internal deadlines cluster in the autumn of DP2, set by the school rather than the IB. Six components falling in one term is the real workload problem, and it is a calendar problem before it is an academic one.

Are the lessons recorded, and can I watch one?+

Sessions run over live video and can be recorded on request, which is one of the practical advantages of online delivery over a visiting tutor: a recorded session can be revisited by the student the night before a test. You are welcome to sit in, and with a Diploma-age student we would usually suggest you do not, because a seventeen-year-old performs rather than works when a parent is watching. The better oversight is the written session note and the marked work, both of which tell you more than observing an hour.

My son sits the November session rather than May. Does that change anything?+

It shifts the whole calendar by roughly six months and changes what is available when. The internal deadlines, mocks and revision window all move with it, and so does the tutoring market: November candidates are a minority in this region, so specialist availability in the months before that session is different from the pattern around May. Most Abu Dhabi schools sit May. If your child's school runs November, take every date from the Diploma coordinator rather than from any general calendar, including ours, and plan the backward count from the real dates.

What happens if no Abu Dhabi tutor teaches my child's Higher Level subject?+

We tell you before you commit rather than after. For thin subjects, Visual Arts, Music, Film, Design Technology, Global Politics, Philosophy and some language A options, the local pool is very shallow and a family searching for someone to drive to their community will find nobody. The alternatives are a different hour, a later start, or a specialist based outside the UAE teaching over the same live video link on Gulf Standard Time. What we will not do is put a generalist in front of a Higher Level student and leave you to discover it.

How long before a Diploma tutor can tell us what is actually wrong?+

One session, if there is marked work to look at. A specialist reading two marked papers and one Internal Assessment draft can usually name the leaking component in forty minutes: command terms, timing, criterion misreading, or a genuine content gap. What takes longer is the repair. A technique error can move within one or two sessions and will show in the next marked piece. A real content gap needs several sessions plus a revisit a fortnight later to confirm it has closed rather than been crammed.

Does my child need a permit-holding tutor, and how do I check?+

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Ask any prospective tutor whether they hold it and under which category. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure quoted at you with scepticism.

Can sessions move to after Iftar during Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?+

Yes, and most Abu Dhabi families ask for it. School hours shorten during Ramadan, energy patterns change, and a 5pm session that worked in January does not work in the fasting month. The usual arrangements are a late-morning slot while school finishes early, or a post-Iftar block in the evening. Because the tutor is reached over live video rather than travelling, the schedule can be rebuilt around your household rather than around a commute, and it can be rebuilt again when the term returns to normal hours.

Is it worth paying for a Diploma tutor if the predicted grades are already fine?+

Sometimes, and the reason is the award conditions rather than the headline total. A predicted 36 built on a 2 in one Higher Level subject is fragile, because the low-grade limits and the Higher Level minimum are separate floors from the total. In that situation the hours should go to the floor, not to the strongest subject. If the predictions are solid with no low grade anywhere, the honest answer is often that tutoring is optional, and a diagnostic first lesson should tell you that rather than sell you a plan.

Start with a diagnosis, not a package

The useful first step is not deciding how many hours to buy. It is finding out which component is losing the marks, because the answer changes the plan completely: a technique error is two sessions, a content gap is six, and a process problem is a calendar rather than a tutor. Tell us the subject, the level and what the last marked piece said, and attach it if you have it. The first lesson is free and ends with a written note naming the leak and what it will take to close. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and if no specialist in that subject is free at your hours, we will say so before you commit.
