IB MYP Tutor in Mirdif

An IB MYP tutor in Mirdif is usually hired in the middle of a term, not at the start of one. A unit summative has come back with a 3 in one criterion, the next task is five weeks away, and the report goes home before that. This page is built around that calendar: what the Dubai school year is doing right now, what the next eight weeks have to achieve, and how one-to-one lessons over live video fit between a 3pm finish in Mirdif and dinner.

  • Criterion-by-criterion marking, not vague homework help
  • Lessons over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • One free trial lesson per subject before any payment

IB & IGCSE in Mirdif

Why MYP help is nearly always a calendar problem first

Parents in Mirdif rarely search for an IB MYP tutor in Mirdif because of a general worry. They search because a date is approaching. A Sciences investigation is due in eleven days, the Individuals and Societies summative is the week after, and the end-of-term report lands before either piece can be improved. The Middle Years Programme makes this sharper than a British-curriculum middle school does, because every assessed task reports against named criteria rather than a single percentage, and a weak criterion keeps reappearing until someone teaches the skill behind it.

The Dubai academic year gives the problem its shape. Schools in Mirdif open in late August or early September, close for a winter break in mid-December, run a second term from January to the spring break, and finish in early July. Inside that, each MYP subject sets two to four summative tasks per term. Work backwards from a report date and the real number of teaching weeks available is almost always smaller than a parent assumes. Eight weeks of weekly one-to-one lessons is roughly one term's worth of a single criterion moving up two mark bands, which is a realistic target. Four weeks is a repair job on one task.

The second thing the calendar decides is the hour. Most Mirdif schools finish between 2:30pm and 3:15pm, and a child living in Uptown Mirdif or Mirdif Hills is home quickly because the school is inside the community. A child at Deira International School in Dubai Festival City, or at Dubai English Speaking College in Academic City, is travelling for twenty-five to forty minutes in afternoon traffic on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. That difference decides whether a 4pm slot is sensible or whether 5pm is the first honest start. Online lessons let a family pick the slot that matches the actual arrival time rather than the slot a tutor can drive to.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. That is stated plainly because the search phrase for this kind of help is often a home-tutor phrase, and a parent deserves to know the format before they book rather than after. What the online format buys in exchange is a subject specialist instead of whoever is free within a twenty-minute drive of Mirdif — and in the MYP, where Design, Arts and Language Acquisition specialists are thin on the ground locally, that trade is the whole argument.

Everything below is organised by time. The criteria table tells you what is being marked. The year-counted-backwards table tells you where your child is in the cycle. The cost table tells you what the Dubai market charges for this level of help, with each figure attributed to whoever published it. The last sections cover the parts of MYP life that catch families out late: the Personal Project in MYP 5, the mandatory UAE subjects that run alongside the programme in every Dubai private school, and what a tutor is allowed to do with coursework that must remain the student's own.

At a glance

  • Each MYP subject is marked against four criteria, each out of 8, totalling 32
  • Mirdif schools finish between roughly 2:30pm and 3:15pm; Festival City and Academic City add travel
  • Eight weekly lessons is about one criterion moving two mark bands, not a whole subject
  • The Personal Project sits in MYP 5 and runs across most of the year
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are compulsory in Dubai private schools whatever the curriculum
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mirdif families meet the MYP from two directions: children moving up from a PYP primary inside the same school, and children arriving from a British or Indian middle school into MYP 3 or 4. Both need different things, and both are heading for the same decision at the end of MYP 5.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is inquiry-led and reports against learner profile attributes and conceptual understanding rather than subject marks. There are no examinations and no criterion scores. Children finish it fluent in asking questions and presenting findings, and often less practised at the two things MYP summatives demand immediately: writing to a command term under time pressure, and showing working that a marker can follow.

Uptown International School in Mirdif runs the full IB continuum, so a child there moves from PYP into MYP without changing school, uniform or friendship group. The transition still bites in Mathematics and Sciences, where Criterion C and Criterion D ask for structured written reasoning for the first time. Tutoring in MYP 1 and 2 is usually about that writing, not about content.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Five years, eight subject groups, and four assessment criteria in every one of them. Each criterion is marked out of 8 against published descriptors, giving 32 marks per subject, which the school converts to a 1-7 grade using IB grade boundaries. Interdisciplinary units, Approaches to Learning skills and Service as Action run through all five years, and MYP 5 adds the Personal Project.

In Dubai the MYP competes directly with IGCSE for the 14-16 age group, and several Mirdif families switch school at that point precisely to sit IGCSEs instead. Staying in the MYP is a defensible choice, but it means the first external examination a child meets is in the Diploma Programme two years later, so examination technique has to be taught deliberately rather than absorbed.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Assessment is mostly external, sat in a single examination session, with internal assessment coursework in every subject. The step up from MYP 5 is largely a step up in volume and in the precision mark schemes expect.

MYP 5 students in Mirdif who are heading for the DP have one decision that matters more than the rest: Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level. Criterion B investigation marks in MYP Mathematics are the best early signal there is, which is why a tutor working in MYP 4 and 5 should be asked about that route choice, not just about the current unit.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The MYP has eight subject groups and all eight are assessed. Families usually ask about Mathematics and Sciences first, then discover that Design and Language Acquisition are where the marks are actually being lost, because those two are taught by fewer specialists and misunderstood by most parents.

Mathematics (Standard and Extended)

MYP 1-5

Criterion A tests knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, and D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Most lost marks sit in B and D: students find the pattern but never generalise it, or they produce a correct calculation with no interpretation of what it means. The Extended route from MYP 4 is the pathway into Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level.

Sciences (Integrated, Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

MYP 1-5

Criterion B asks the student to design a controlled investigation, C to process and evaluate data, and D to reflect on the impacts of science. The commonest failure is a hypothesis with no mechanism behind it and a conclusion that restates the graph. Teaching a student to write an evaluation that names a specific source of error, and what it did to the data, moves C and D faster than more content revision.

Language and Literature (English)

MYP 1-5

Criteria run analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Analysis is the bottleneck: students describe what a writer says rather than how the choice of word or structure creates the effect. A short, repeatable paragraph frame built around one quotation and one technique lifts Criterion A within a few weeks, because the skill being marked is narrow and teachable.

Language Acquisition (Arabic, French, Spanish)

Phases 1-6

Assessed in listening, reading, speaking and writing, with students placed in a phase rather than a year group. Mirdif families often discover late that their child has been sitting in a phase too low to reach the Diploma language requirement. Tutoring here is phase-targeted: the vocabulary and text types for the phase above the current one, plus the oral task format.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

History, geography and economics content assessed through knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Criterion D is where marks vanish: students summarise sources instead of evaluating origin, purpose and limitation. Source work is a drill, and eight well-chosen sources with a fixed evaluation structure will usually do more than a term of re-reading notes.

Design

MYP 1-5

Four criteria covering inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Design is almost always the lowest grade on a Mirdif MYP report, because students treat the design cycle folder as paperwork. The folder is the assessment. Teaching a student to write specifications that are actually testable, then test against them, is the single highest-return intervention in the subject.

Arts (Visual Arts, Music, Drama)

MYP 1-5

Marked on knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than the finished piece, which surprises families every year. Support here is about documenting intention and revision honestly and in enough detail, and about writing the artist-statement reflections that Criterion D rewards.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Includes a written and reflective component, not only performance. Students lose marks on the planning for performance criterion and on the reflection, where a training plan has no measurable targets. A few sessions on goal setting, data recording and evaluation language usually fixes a grade that a child assumed was about fitness.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Each year the school runs at least one unit assessed against separate interdisciplinary criteria, where two subjects are brought together and the student is marked on synthesis. These units are rarely revised for because they sit outside the normal subject rhythm. Knowing the four interdisciplinary criteria before the task is set is most of the work.

Personal Project (MYP 5)

MYP 5

A year-long independent project with a process journal, a product or outcome, and a report, assessed on planning, applying skills, and reflecting. A tutor may coach the process, question the goal and teach referencing. A tutor may not write the report or make the product. The honest version of help here is deadline architecture and better questions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every MYP request from Mirdif. All three are delivered online over live video, and all three are timed to Gulf Standard Time so a session never collides with a school day or a family evening.

Weekly one-to-one, term-long

One or two fixed slots a week across a term, matched to the subject's summative rhythm. The tutor works from the school's unit planner and task sheet rather than a generic scheme, so the week before a summative is spent on that task's criteria and the week after is spent on the feedback. This is the format that moves a criterion two mark bands over eight weeks.

  • Same tutor, same slot, 50 or 80 minutes
  • Planned against the school's own task dates
  • Written note after each session naming the criterion worked on
  • Pauses for the winter and spring breaks if you want them

Criterion clinic before a summative

A short block of two to four sessions aimed at one named criterion and one upcoming task. Typical uses are a Sciences Criterion B investigation design, a Design specification and testing plan, or an Individuals and Societies source evaluation. The student brings the task sheet and the rubric; the tutor works only on what that rubric rewards.

  • Two to four sessions, booked inside a fortnight
  • Rubric-led: the descriptors are read before anything is written
  • Student's own work throughout, never drafted by the tutor
  • Useful as a first trial of whether tutoring is needed at all

Holiday intensive block

Concentrated sessions across the winter, spring or summer break, when the Mirdif school run is not competing for the afternoon. Families use these either to repair a term that went badly or to pre-teach the next unit so the child starts ahead. Most blocks run three to five sessions a week for two to three weeks.

  • Morning slots available, which term time rarely allows
  • Good for MYP 5 students starting Diploma content early
  • Can run as a Personal Project planning block
  • Books out quickly before the spring break

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mirdif

01

What the next eight weeks actually have to achieve

  • Find the next two summative dates before booking anything
  • Pick one criterion per subject, not the whole subject
  • Two subjects at one session a week is the practical ceiling in term time
  • Judge the block on a marked criterion score, not on confidence

Start with the report date, not with the subject. In a Dubai MYP school there are usually two reporting points per term, and the marks that feed them are the summative tasks already on the unit planner. If the next report is six weeks away and two summatives fall inside that window, the realistic goal is to raise the criteria those two tasks assess. Trying to lift a whole subject grade in six weeks is how families end up paying for sessions that produce no visible change, because an MYP grade is a conversion of four criterion scores and only the criteria being assessed in the window can move.

Eight weeks is the number that keeps appearing because it is roughly half a Dubai term and it is long enough for a skill to be taught, practised on a real task, marked, and practised again. A plausible eight-week shape for a Sciences student stuck on data handling: two sessions reading the Criterion C descriptors against the last marked piece, two sessions on processing raw data into a usable table and graph, two sessions writing evaluations that name a specific error and its direction of effect, and two sessions applying all of it to the live investigation. That is one criterion, taught properly, with evidence at the end.

What does not fit into eight weeks is three subjects at once. Families in Mirdif frequently open with Mathematics, Sciences and English together, and the honest answer is to pick the subject where the criterion is both weakest and most teachable, work it until the next report, then move. Two subjects at one session a week is the practical ceiling for a child who also has a school day, Arabic, Islamic Education, Service as Action and, in MYP 5, a Personal Project running in the background.

The last thing to settle before booking is what counts as evidence that it worked. A marked task against a named criterion is evidence. A child saying they feel more confident is encouraging but is not a measurement. Ask for the criterion score before and after, and judge the eight weeks on that.

02

The four MYP criteria, subject group by subject group

Every MYP subject group is assessed against exactly four criteria, labelled A to D, and each is marked out of 8 against published descriptors. Four criteria out of 8 gives 32 marks per subject, which the school converts to a 1-7 grade using IB grade boundaries. The criteria are different in each subject group, which is why a parent who understands Criterion C in Mathematics still cannot read a Design report. The table below sets them out together, and it is the single most useful thing on this page to print and keep.

Reading a report with this table in hand changes the conversation. A 7 out of 8 in Mathematics Criterion A and a 3 in Criterion B does not describe a child who is bad at maths; it describes a child who can execute a method and cannot yet investigate a pattern and generalise it. Those are different lessons. In Sciences, strong A with weak C is a child who knows the content and cannot process data. In Language and Literature, strong C with weak A is a child who writes fluently about a text without analysing how it works.

The descriptors themselves are written in bands of two marks, which is why movement happens in jumps. A student sitting at 3-4 in a criterion is being told they can do the thing with support or in simple cases. Reaching 5-6 almost always requires one specific addition — a justification, an evaluation, a generalisation — rather than more of what they already produce. That is what makes criterion work efficient: the gap between bands is usually a nameable missing move, and once a student knows which move is missing they can add it to every piece.

Schools publish their own task-specific clarifications of these descriptors on each task sheet. Those clarifications are what the teacher actually marks against. Any tutoring session that starts without the task sheet in front of both people is guessing.

The Dubai MYP year counted backwards

Nobody in this search results page publishes a calendar, which is strange, because a calendar is what a parent is actually holding. A Dubai private school year opens in late August or early September and closes in early July, with a winter break around mid-December and a spring break in the second half of March or early April. Inside that, the MYP runs on unit cycles rather than on examination series, so the pressure points are internal deadlines, not public ones.

That changes in MYP 5 for schools offering the optional MYP eAssessment, where on-screen examinations and ePortfolios lead to the IB MYP Certificate. Those sit in a session in the first half of the calendar year, and the ePortfolio components have internal upload deadlines weeks earlier. If your child's school enters students for eAssessment, the deadline that matters is the upload date your coordinator gives you, and it is always earlier than parents expect. Confirm it with the MYP coordinator directly rather than taking a date from any website, including this one.

Ramadan sits inside the second half of the Dubai school year and moves earlier each year. Schools shorten the day, after-school activities thin out, and families reorganise evenings around Iftar. In practice this is the easiest period of the year to schedule tutoring, because a shortened school day frees the early afternoon and online sessions can move to a post-Iftar slot without anybody driving anywhere. The table below is the shape of the year as it affects a tutoring plan; your school's own calendar overrides it.

The reason to work from this table rather than from a term plan is that it tells you when not to book. Buying sessions in the fortnight before a winter break, when summatives are finished and reports are already written, buys nothing. The same money spent in the two weeks after the break, pre-teaching the next unit, is worth considerably more.

What Middle Years Programme support costs in Dubai, and what the hour buys

Three of the six pages currently ranking for Dubai tutoring queries publish no price at all, and the two that do quote United States dollars, which is not the currency a Mirdif family transacts in. So here are the Dubai market bands in dirhams, each attributed to whoever published it. Read them as the market, not as an IB Gram price list: our own model is a free trial lesson first and a quoted plan after, because an MYP Design block and an MYP 1 Mathematics block are not the same piece of work.

At the cheap end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52, both online and both typically delivered by university students or generalists. That tier is viable for homework supervision and is a poor match for criterion work, because marking against MYP descriptors is a trained skill and an undergraduate who has never seen a rubric cannot teach to one. The qualified-subject-tutor band online runs roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialist IB and IGCSE tutors are quoted around AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 plus. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for named or examiner-level tutors.

In-home visits are the band that distorts everything. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Compare that with online monthly packages advertised around AED 799 for eight sessions. The gap is not teaching quality; it is a car, a driver and forty minutes of Dubai traffic each way, paid for by the hour. For a Mirdif family that premium buys proximity and nothing else, and proximity is the one thing an online lesson does not need.

What the hour actually buys is worth separating from what it costs. An hour with a tutor who has marked MYP work produces a named criterion, a descriptor band, and a specific missing move. An hour with a generalist produces completed homework. Both cost money; only one of them changes a report.

Online lessons against a tutor driving into Mirdif

A parent typing a home-tutor phrase into Google is asking a reasonable question, and it deserves a real answer rather than a sales line. In-home tutoring in Mirdif is genuinely available from independent tutors and small agencies, it is priced as the table above shows, and it suits some families — particularly those with a young child who will not settle in front of a screen, or a household where a dedicated quiet room is not available.

The costs of that choice are concrete. The tutor pool shrinks to people willing to drive to the eastern suburbs at 5pm, which in practice means generalists rather than MYP Design or Language Acquisition specialists. The rate carries a travel premium of roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour over the online equivalent. Cancellations rise, because traffic on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khawaneej Road makes a fixed arrival time fragile. And the session cannot easily move: a child who is ill at 4:30pm either takes the lesson or loses it, where an online slot can shift by a day.

IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE. Every UAE lesson is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, and home visits exist only in our India service. The argument for that is not cost; it is the pool. A Mirdif student who needs someone who has marked MYP Sciences Criterion B, or who can work in Arabic Phase 3, is choosing from every available specialist rather than from the subset who live within a half-hour drive. On a four-criterion assessment system with eight subject groups, that difference is the whole game.

The table sets the two formats side by side on the dimensions that actually differ. Teaching quality is not in the table, because format does not determine it; the tutor does.

The Personal Project, term by term

The Personal Project is the piece of MYP 5 that most reliably goes wrong, and it goes wrong for a scheduling reason rather than an academic one. It runs across most of a school year, it is supervised rather than taught, and it is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting — all three of which are evidenced by a process journal kept over months. A student who produces a good product and a thin journal scores badly. A student who keeps an honest, dated, reflective journal and produces a modest product usually scores well.

A workable shape for a Mirdif student: goal and context settled before the winter break, the bulk of the making and the skill-building through January and February, and the report written in the weeks after the spring break with the journal already complete. That leaves the Ramadan period for lower-intensity journal work and reflection, which is exactly what fits a shortened school day. Schools set their own internal deadlines and those override everything here, so the first job in MYP 5 is to write the school's dates on a wall calendar at home.

Where a tutor helps is narrow and worth stating precisely. Questioning whether the goal is specific enough to be achievable. Teaching the research and referencing skills the project demands. Reading the assessment criteria with the student so they know what the report has to evidence. Holding weekly accountability so the journal does not become three entries written the night before. Teaching the student how to write a reflection that identifies a decision, its reason and its consequence.

Where a tutor does not help, under IB academic honesty rules, is in producing the work. A tutor must not write the report, make the product, or draft the journal entries. That boundary is not a disclaimer; it is the difference between support and malpractice, and a family paying for help is entitled to know which one they are buying.

07

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the MYP

Every private school in Dubai teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies regardless of which international curriculum it is licensed to deliver. This is a federal requirement reflected in KHDA's own mandatory-subject guidance, which states that its requirements must be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. For an MYP family in Mirdif this means your child's timetable carries these subjects in addition to the eight MYP subject groups, and they appear on the report alongside criterion grades.

The organisational rules are specific and useful to know. KHDA requires schools to run separate classes by group for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for Arab and non-Arab students are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language; Social Studies is taught primarily in Arabic for Arab students; and for non-Arab students Islamic Education and moral, social and cultural studies are taught in the language of the school's licensed curriculum.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Schools may vary the lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools are also required to ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a concrete thing a parent can ask about at a meeting. For the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so tutoring in these subjects stays inside the prescribed curriculum rather than importing outside material.

In practice, Mirdif families ask us about Arabic twice: once in MYP 1 to 3, when a non-Arab child is struggling with a subject that carries real timetable weight, and once in MYP 4 and 5, when Arabic as a Language Acquisition phase starts to interact with Diploma language requirements. Both are legitimate tutoring needs and both sit inside the school's own scheme of work.

08

Where a tutor's job stops: MYP academic honesty

  • Allowed: teaching, modelling on a different question, marking a draft against descriptors
  • Allowed: referencing instruction, criteria reading, weekly accountability
  • Not allowed: writing or drafting the submission, making the product, inventing data
  • The test: can the student explain, unprompted, why each decision is there?

Some of the pages competing for this search sell finished coursework. One sells completed Internal Assessments outright. A family should understand what that is: under IB rules it is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, not on the website that took the money. For an MYP student the exposure is lower than in the Diploma, but the habit formed is the problem, because the same student will be submitting Internal Assessments and an Extended Essay two years later under a regime that checks.

The line is drawn by whose thinking appears in the submitted work. A tutor may teach a skill, explain a concept, model an example on a different question, read the criteria with the student, mark a completed draft against descriptors, and ask questions that make the student notice a gap. A tutor may teach referencing and show how to acknowledge a source correctly. A tutor may run accountability check-ins so a process journal stays current.

A tutor may not write any part of the submission, draft the report, dictate sentences for a student to transcribe, make or assemble a product, invent data for an investigation, or edit a piece to the point where the final text is the tutor's rather than the student's. The practical test we use is simple: if the student could not explain, in their own words, why a particular sentence or decision is in the work, it should not be there. Any tutor who declines to work that way is not giving your child a shortcut; they are putting the submission at risk.

Families sometimes worry that this makes tutoring less useful. It makes it more useful. A child who has been taught to evaluate their own data against a descriptor can do it again in the next unit, next year, and in the Diploma. A child handed a finished evaluation has learned nothing transferable and has an inconsistency on their record waiting to be noticed.

Private schools in Dubai are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which the UAE government describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects schools and publishes a rating on a six-band scale, and those reports are public. IB Gram is not inspected, approved or licensed by KHDA, and nobody offering private tuition should imply otherwise; a KHDA educational services permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, which is a different kind of operation altogether.

The scale of the market Mirdif sits inside is worth knowing. Dubai's private school sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula in 2024-25, with the UK curriculum accounting for 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian 26 per cent, American 14 per cent and the International Baccalaureate 7 per cent. Seven new private schools were confirmed for the 2026-27 intake — four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate — adding 16,846 places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. KHDA also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion.

What this means for a Mirdif MYP family is supply. The IB share of Dubai enrolment is small relative to the UK curriculum, and three of the seven new schools are IB, so demand for people who can actually mark MYP criteria is rising faster than the local supply of them. That is the structural reason an online pool beats a local one for this specific programme, and it is why a parent should ask a prospective tutor which subject groups they have marked rather than how many years they have taught.

Private tuition in the UAE is also permitted work rather than informal work. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service is listed as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, with a stated two-working-day completion time through its app, website and e-services. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. Abu Dhabi adds a further rule reported in the local press: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Mirdif

Mirdif sits in Dubai's eastern suburbs, a villa-and-low-rise belt where families stay for years and children often change school without changing neighbourhood. The practical consequence for tutoring is that the school a child attends, and therefore the finishing time, varies far more than the postcode does.

Mirdif

Villas and low-rise apartments either side of Algeria Street, with Uptown International School and GEMS Royal Dubai School inside the community. Children at those schools are home by about 3pm, which makes a 4pm online lesson comfortable on a weekday.

Uptown Mirdif and Mirdif Hills

Denser apartment blocks with a younger family profile and a high share of first-time IB parents. Demand here is heaviest in MYP 1 to 3, where the four-criterion marking is new and a report card needs translating before it can be acted on.

Al Mizhar

Large villa plots to the north-east, with Al Mizhar American Academy nearby and a mix of American-curriculum and IB families. Students often carry a GPA mindset into MYP criteria, and the first tutoring job is explaining that a 6 out of 8 is not 75 per cent.

Al Khawaneej

Spread-out villa communities where the school run is longer in both directions. Families here lean towards later session slots, 5pm or 6pm, and towards fewer, longer sessions rather than two short ones a week.

Al Warqa

A dense residential belt feeding several large Indian and British-curriculum schools. MYP enquiries from Al Warqa are often from families who moved into an IB school mid-year and need a bridging plan for Sciences and Design.

Al Rashidiya and Nad Al Hamar

Older established neighbourhoods close to the airport road, with short commutes to Festival City schools. The practical constraint here is siblings on different timetables, which usually means one tutoring slot has to serve two children on different evenings.

Dubai Festival City

Home to Deira International School and Universal American School, so a large share of Mirdif's secondary students travel here daily. Arrival home is realistically 3:45pm to 4:15pm, and a 4pm start works only for students who finish earlier on a short day.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

The corridor along Dubai-Al Ain Road that carries Dubai English Speaking College and several university campuses. Afternoon traffic is the limiting factor, and online lessons remove the second half of the journey entirely.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Mirdif

Mirdif and Uptown Mirdif

The immediate cluster. One full IB continuum school and several strong British-curriculum schools sit within the community, which is why MYP and IGCSE families here often live on the same street and compare notes across two different assessment systems.

  • Uptown International School
  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Al Mizhar American Academy

Dubai Festival City and the Academic City corridor

Where a large share of Mirdif's older students actually spend the day. These schools run IB Diploma alongside British pathways, so MYP 5 students here are making the DP decision in a building where both options are visible.

  • Deira International School
  • Universal American School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Modern Academy

Al Warqa and Al Qusais

The larger-roll schools to the east and north, mostly Indian and British curriculum. Students arriving from here into an IB school mid-key-stage are the most common bridging case we see in the eastern suburbs.

  • Our Own English High School
  • The Millennium School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Westminster School Dubai

Schools are named as local context so families can place themselves on this page. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the date, not just the subject

The useful first message names the next summative or report date, the subject, and the criterion letters from the last marked piece. With those three things a plan can be built in one reply. Without them the first session is spent diagnosing what a report card already said.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, one per subject

One free trial lesson per subject, booked before any payment is taken, with the student's most recent marked task in front of both people. The purpose is diagnostic: the tutor should finish it able to name the criterion to target and the missing move inside it.

  3. 03

    An eight-week plan written down

After the trial you get a short written plan: the criterion being targeted, what each block of sessions covers, which school task it is aimed at, and what evidence will show it worked. If two subjects are needed, the plan says which one comes first and why.

  4. 04

Fixed weekly slots in Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked as fixed weekly slots chosen around the actual school arrival time, not a notional one. Mirdif-based schools usually allow a 4pm start; Festival City and Academic City commutes usually mean 5pm. Slots move for Ramadan and for breaks.

  5. 05

Review at the next marked task

The plan is reviewed when the next criterion score comes back from school, not on a fixed monthly cycle. If the criterion moved, the next one is chosen. If it did not, the tutor or the approach changes, and we say which we think it is.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-literate, not just subject-literate

The tutors matched to MYP requests have marked against MYP descriptors, which is a different skill from knowing the content. Ask any prospective tutor which subject groups and which criteria they have assessed; the answer separates a specialist from a graduate with good subject knowledge.

Rates on the page, with sources

The AED bands above are published Dubai market figures with the publisher named, read in October 2026. We do not print an invented price list, and we do not quote dollars to a dirham household. Our own cost is quoted after the free trial, against a written plan.

Honest about the format

UAE lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video. We say so before you book rather than after, even though the phrase parents search is a home-tutor phrase. Home visits are part of our India service only, and no page of ours will suggest otherwise.

A pool, not a postcode

Because lessons are online, a Mirdif student is matched from every available specialist rather than from those willing to drive to the eastern suburbs at 5pm. For MYP Design, Arts and Language Acquisition, where local specialists are genuinely scarce, that is the difference between the right tutor and an available one.

Academic honesty stated, not assumed

We teach, model, mark and question. We do not write reports, make products or draft journals, and the section above says exactly where the line falls. In a search result that contains sellers of finished coursework, that boundary is worth reading before you choose.

Built around the school's own calendar

Plans are written against your school's unit planner and task dates, with the winter and spring breaks treated as planning decisions rather than interruptions. The highest-value window in a Dubai MYP year is January to February, and a plan should spend money there rather than in December.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mirdif: your questions answered

What does an IB MYP tutor in Mirdif actually do in the first month?+

The first month is diagnosis then one target. Session one reads the most recent marked task against its criterion descriptors and names which of the four criteria is costing marks. The next two or three sessions teach the specific missing move in that criterion, usually a justification, an evaluation or a generalisation, and practise it on past questions. The fourth week applies it to whatever live task the school has set. By the end of the month you should have a marked piece showing the criterion score and a short written note saying what changed. A month that produces only completed homework has not worked.

How does a mark out of 32 become a 1 to 7 on my child's MYP report?+

Each MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, and each criterion is marked out of 8 against published descriptors. The four add to a maximum of 32. The school then converts that total into a 1-7 grade using IB grade boundaries. This is why a parent cannot read an MYP report as a percentage: 24 out of 32 is not 75 per cent of anything, it is a profile of four separate skills. Two children on the same total can need completely different teaching, because one may be weak in communication and the other in investigation.

My child scored 3 in Criterion C. What does that actually mean?+

Criterion C differs by subject, so the first step is to check which one applies. In Mathematics it is communicating; in Sciences it is processing and evaluating; in Language and Literature it is producing text; in Design it is creating the solution. A 3 sits in the 3-4 band, which in most descriptors means the student can do the task in simple situations or with support. Moving to 5-6 usually needs one nameable addition rather than more effort: showing working a reader can follow, evaluating data rather than describing it, or meeting a specification they wrote themselves.

When should a Mirdif MYP 5 student start the Personal Project?+

Earlier than feels necessary. The project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, all evidenced through a process journal kept over months, so a journal started late cannot score well however good the product is. A workable shape is goal and context settled before the winter break, skill-building and making through January and February, and the report written after the spring break with the journal already complete. Your school sets internal deadlines that override any general timeline, so get those dates from the MYP coordinator in the first term and put them on a wall calendar at home.

What do Dubai families pay per hour for Middle Years Programme support?+

Published Dubai market figures, read in October 2026, run from roughly AED 33-65 an hour at the budget online end, where Tutopiya advertises from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65. Qualified subject tutors online sit around AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialists are quoted AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180-500 including travel. Those are market rates, not IB Gram's price; ours is quoted after a free trial lesson, against a written plan, because an MYP Design block and an MYP 1 Mathematics block are different work.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to a villa in Mirdif or Uptown Mirdif?+

No. Every UAE lesson is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video with a shared whiteboard and screen sharing. Home visits are part of our India service and are not offered anywhere in the UAE, including Mirdif. We state that before you book because the phrase many parents search is a home-tutor phrase. What the online format gives a Mirdif family in return is access to every available MYP specialist rather than only those willing to drive to the eastern suburbs during the afternoon peak, which matters most in Design, Arts and Language Acquisition.

If school finishes at 3pm, what is a realistic session start time?+

It depends on the school rather than the neighbourhood. A child at Uptown International School or GEMS Royal Dubai School is inside Mirdif and usually home by about 3pm, so a 4pm start is comfortable. A child travelling to Deira International School or Universal American School in Dubai Festival City, or to Dubai English Speaking College in Academic City, realistically arrives between 3:45pm and 4:15pm, which makes 5pm the first honest slot. Online lessons let you pick the time that matches the real arrival, and move it permanently if the route changes.

Is the MYP eAssessment compulsory for my child?+

No. The on-screen examinations and ePortfolios that lead to the IB MYP Certificate are an option a school chooses, and many Dubai schools do not enter students for them. If your school does, the dates that matter are the internal upload deadlines for the ePortfolio components, which fall weeks before the on-screen session and are set by the school. Ask your MYP coordinator directly for those dates rather than relying on any website, including this one. If your school does not use eAssessment, your child's MYP 5 outcome is reported on school-assessed criterion grades.

How many weeks does a Criterion B investigation in Sciences need?+

Four to six weekly sessions is typical if the student already knows the content and is losing marks on design. The work is a sequence: read the descriptors against the last marked investigation, write a research question that names an independent and a dependent variable, list controlled variables with a reason for each, design a method someone else could repeat, and plan how the data will be processed before collecting any. Students who go straight to the practical and write the plan afterwards lose Criterion B marks every time, because the descriptor rewards the planning, not the result.

Which schools near Mirdif run the MYP rather than IGCSE at 14?+

Uptown International School in Mirdif runs the full IB continuum, so students there continue into the MYP at 14 rather than switching to IGCSE. GEMS Modern Academy and a number of other Dubai schools also run IB programmes, while GEMS Royal Dubai School, Star International School Mirdif, Dubai English Speaking College and most of the Al Warqa and Al Qusais schools follow British or Indian pathways with IGCSE at 16. Check the school's own current programme listing and KHDA's published inspection report, since curriculum offerings change as new schools open.

Will MYP tutoring help my child choose Diploma subjects correctly?+

It should. The most consequential Diploma decision a Mirdif MYP 5 student makes is Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level, and the best early evidence is their Criterion B investigation marks in MYP Mathematics rather than their overall grade. A tutor working in MYP 4 and 5 should be able to read those scores and say which route the student is currently suited to, and what would have to change for the other. Ask that question explicitly; many tutors will only discuss the current unit unless prompted.

Does my child still take Arabic and Islamic Education in an IB school in Dubai?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance states its requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. These subjects appear on your child's report alongside the MYP criterion grades and carry real timetable weight.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project without breaking IB honesty rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may question whether the goal is specific enough, teach research and referencing skills, read the assessment criteria with the student, hold weekly accountability so the process journal stays current, and teach the student how to write a reflection that names a decision, its reason and its consequence. A tutor may not write the report, draft journal entries, make or assemble the product, or edit the text until it is theirs rather than the student's. The working test is whether the student can explain any sentence in the submission without prompting.

Is a private tutor working with my child legally permitted in the UAE?+

Private tuition in the UAE is permitted work. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, covering teachers registered in schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE lists the service as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, applied for through its app, website or e-services with a stated two-working-day completion. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount with suspicion.

How do lessons work during Ramadan and the shortened school day?+

Better than during the rest of the year, usually. Dubai schools shorten the day and reduce after-school activities, which frees the early afternoon, and online sessions can also move to a post-Iftar slot without anyone travelling. Families typically keep one subject moving at a reduced intensity and use the period for lower-pressure work: process journal entries in MYP 5, consolidation of a criterion already taught, or reading ahead into the next unit. The plan is agreed before the period starts so the slot does not simply vanish for a month and then need rebuilding.

What happens if no MYP Design or Arts specialist is free?+

We tell you, rather than filling the slot with a generalist. Design and Arts are the two MYP subject groups where specialist supply is thinnest, partly because the assessment sits in a process folder and a journal that few tutors have marked. If nobody suitable is available we say so, give an honest estimate of when one will be, and if the deadline cannot wait we will say that a generalist can help with the written reflections but not with the design cycle itself. That is less satisfying than a yes and considerably more useful than a mismatch.

Start from the date on the calendar

If there is a summative or a report date inside the next eight weeks, that date is the brief. Send the subject, the date and the criterion letters from the last marked task, and we will come back with a plan that says which criterion we would target first and why. The first lesson is free, one per subject, taken before any payment, and it works best with the most recent marked piece of work open on screen. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time and booked around the real Mirdif school run rather than an idealised one.
