IB & IGCSE in Dubai

English B is an acquisition course, and it is marked like one

English B sits in Group 2 of the Diploma, the language-acquisition group. It is not the course for a student whose strongest language is English; that student belongs in English A: Language and Literature or English A: Literature. In Dubai the distinction matters more than almost anywhere else, because a large share of Diploma candidates arrive from Arabic-medium, French-medium, Russian-medium or Indian-curriculum primary schooling into an English-medium school at Year 7 or Year 9. By Year 12 their spoken English is fluent and their written register is not. English B is designed for that profile, and the mark scheme rewards precisely the things that profile tends to miss.

The course is built around five prescribed themes - identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet - and a set of text types the student must be able to produce on demand. Higher Level adds two literary works, read in English, which supply the extract that anchors the HL individual oral. Nothing on the course is a literature essay in the Language A sense. A student who writes a careful analysis of theme and imagery inside a Paper 1 blog post will be marked down, because the blog post was asked for and the analysis was not.

That is the commonest reason a capable Dubai student plateaus at a 4 or a 5 in English B. The English is good. The task is misread. Criterion B, message, asks whether the response does what the prompt instructed, for the audience the prompt named, in the text type the prompt specified. A tutor who marks against the published criteria rather than against general writing quality fixes this in a handful of sessions, because it is a rules problem rather than a language problem.

The second recurring problem is Paper 2. Listening carries a quarter of the final grade, and few Dubai schools timetable dedicated listening practice, because there is no obvious homework to set for it. Students hear each recording twice and lose marks on the questions that test inference rather than retrieval. Reading comprehension bleeds marks on matching and true-false items where a distractor repeats the stem's wording. Both are trainable with recorded practice and a tutor who stops the audio to ask what the speaker implied rather than what the speaker said.

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time so a session can start after a 15:00 or 15:30 finish and still leave the evening intact. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE - sending a tutor to an address is a service we run only in India - so the matching pool is not narrowed to the specialists who happen to live within driving distance of your community. For a subject as component-specific as English B, that widening is the whole point.

At a glance

  • Paper 1: one written task from three prompts, 1 hour 15 minutes at SL, 1 hour 30 at HL
  • Paper 2: listening, then reading, worth half the grade at both levels
  • Individual oral: a visual stimulus at SL, a literary extract at HL
  • Five prescribed themes, assessed across every component
  • Higher Level only: two literary works studied in English
  • No written coursework to submit beyond the recorded oral
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English B is a Diploma subject, but the preparation for it starts years earlier. These are the IB programmes Dubai schools run around it, and what each one contributes to a student's English before Year 12. The notes are specific to how Dubai schools sequence the programmes rather than to the IB's general description of them.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma takes six subjects, one from each group, with three at Higher Level. English B sits in Group 2 and may be taken at SL or HL. A candidate whose Language A is Arabic, French, Russian, Hindi or Spanish normally pairs it with English B, and that pairing is what makes a bilingual diploma possible. Group 2 cannot be dropped: every Diploma candidate studies a second language, which is why English B enrolment across Dubai schools is large and unusually mixed in ability.

A single English B SL class at a school in Al Barsha or Emirates Hills can hold students who have spoken English since nursery alongside students who arrived from Cairo or Moscow in Year 10. Schools stream by placement test where staffing allows, and many cannot, so the published class pace sits in the middle and both ends of the class need separate work outside it.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme assesses language acquisition in phases against four criteria: comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language in spoken and written form. A student finishing MYP in Phase 4 or 5 is normally placed into English B HL, and Phase 3 points to SL. The phases are not year groups, so a student can sit in the same phase for two years without anyone raising it at a parents' evening.

Several Dubai schools run the MYP only to Year 9 and then switch to IGCSE for Years 10 and 11 before the Diploma. That break matters for English B, because IGCSE English as a Second Language rewards accuracy and fixed formats while MYP criterion C rewards risk-taking with language. Students who cross that join often need the register work rebuilt from the task instruction upwards.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme combines at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Where English B is one of the Diploma courses, the student sits the same papers as a full Diploma candidate and is marked on the same seven-point scale. What differs is the surrounding load, which carries less written coursework in other subjects and more structured reflection.

Only a handful of Dubai schools are authorised to run the Career-related Programme, so a CP student wanting English B help is often the only one in their year on that route. School-level revision groups are built for the Diploma cohort and rarely fit the CP timetable, which is one of the clearer cases for one-to-one work rather than a class.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

English B is one course, and a Dubai Diploma student rarely needs help with only one language component. These are the Group 1 and Group 2 courses IB Gram covers for Dubai candidates, with what each one actually assesses rather than what it sounds like it assesses.

English B

HL and SL

Language acquisition for students already functional in English. Paper 1 productive writing, Paper 2 listening and reading, and an individual oral. HL adds two literary works and a longer Paper 1. Marks are lost on text type and audience far more often than on grammar.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Group 1 course for students whose strongest language is English. Paper 1 is guided textual analysis of unseen non-literary texts; Paper 2 is a comparative essay on studied literary works. HL adds a 1,200-1,500 word HL essay. A student mis-streamed here from English B usually struggles with Paper 1.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

Literary works only, across periods, places and forms. Paper 1 is guided literary analysis of an unseen extract; Paper 2 compares studied works. The individual oral examines a global issue through two works. Chosen in Dubai mainly by students heading for English, law or history degrees.

Arabic B

HL and SL

The acquisition route for students with conversational Arabic but limited Modern Standard Arabic. The same component structure as English B, with the added difficulty that classroom Arabic in Dubai is often Gulf dialect while the papers are set in Modern Standard.

Arabic A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Group 1 route for first-language Arabic speakers, and for many Dubai students the second half of a bilingual diploma alongside English A or English B. Papers are sat in Arabic, and the HL essay is written in Arabic on a studied work.

French B

HL and SL

Acquisition French for students from Francophone primary schooling or from a strong MYP French background. Structurally identical to English B, with text types that lean on formal register conventions French examiners mark strictly.

Spanish B

HL and SL

Often chosen in Dubai as the second language by students with no heritage connection to it, which makes the HL literary works the pressure point. Paper 2 listening is the component where ab initio habits show up most clearly.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The 1,600-word TOK essay on a prescribed title plus the TOK exhibition. English B students often find the essay harder than their grade suggests, because the marking rewards precise argumentative language rather than fluency.

Extended Essay in a Group 2 language

Core

A 4,000-word essay in the target language, in one of three categories: language, culture and society, or literature. Supervision is about research question scope and the categories' different evidence requirements. The writing stays the student's own.

IGCSE English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

The qualification many Dubai students hold on entry to English B. Its reward structure for fixed formats and formulaic phrasing is exactly what the English B criteria penalise, so the first few Diploma sessions often unpick it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families use English B support, chosen by where the student is in the two-year course rather than by budget. Each is delivered one-to-one over live video, and the trial lesson is the same in all three.

Weekly one-to-one through term

One 60- or 90-minute session a week, following the school's own scheme of work and its five-theme sequence. The tutor marks one Paper 1 response a fortnight against the published criteria and returns it with the criterion letters and the marks attached, so the student can see which of the three criteria is costing them.

  • Session follows the school's current theme, not a separate syllabus
  • One marked Paper 1 task every two weeks
  • Listening practice set as recorded homework between sessions
  • Short written feedback the student can take to their class teacher

Component sprint before a paper or oral window

Four to eight sessions aimed at one component. Before an individual oral that means stimulus or extract drill, timed four-minute presentations and the discussion questions examiners actually ask. Before Paper 2 it means listening under exam conditions twice a week until inference questions stop being guesswork.

  • Built around a single component and its criteria
  • Recorded oral rehearsals the student can replay
  • Timed papers marked and returned inside 48 hours
  • Ends when the window closes rather than running on

Two-year plan from the start of Year 12

Fortnightly in Year 12, weekly from the start of Year 13, with the HL literary works read on a schedule rather than in the fortnight before the oral. This is the version that suits students who were placed into HL on an MYP phase score and have never written a formal English text type under time pressure.

  • Reading schedule for the two HL works across Year 12
  • Text-type coverage mapped across the five themes
  • Extended Essay check-in sessions where the essay is in English B
  • Mock-season review built in before the final term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB DP English B tutor in Dubai is actually asked to fix

  • Paper 1 marked two bands below class work: a criteria problem, four to six sessions
  • Unexplained Paper 2 listening scores: a trained skill, six to eight weeks
  • Individual oral with no structure: rehearsal and question drill, two to three weeks
  • Placement dispute between English A and English B: an evidence conversation first

Parents who search for an IB DP English B tutor in Dubai almost always arrive with one of four specific problems rather than a general sense that English needs work. The first is a Paper 1 grade that sits two bands below the student's class work. The second is a listening score nobody can explain. The third is an individual oral three weeks away for which the student has no structure. The fourth is a placement argument: the school has put a child in English B who the parents believe should be in English A, or the reverse.

Each of those has a different fix and a different timescale. A Paper 1 problem is usually solved by marking three or four responses against criteria A, B and C and showing the student where the message mark went. A listening problem takes six to eight weeks of twice-weekly recorded practice because it is a trained skill, not a known fact. An oral three weeks out is a structure-and-rehearsal job. A placement question is a conversation about evidence, and often ends with the school being right.

What a tutor cannot do is make the course shorter. English B is assessed on productive performance under time pressure, so the sessions that move a grade are the ones where the student writes and speaks while the tutor watches, not the ones where the tutor explains. Families who book an English B specialist expecting content delivery - vocabulary lists, grammar tables, model answers to memorise - tend to see the smallest movement, because none of those three things is what the criteria measure.

02

English A or English B? The placement decision Dubai schools make for you

Group 1 and Group 2 are different courses with different purposes, and the IB expects the school to place the student. In Dubai that placement is made by a Diploma coordinator in the spring of Year 11 on the basis of MYP phase scores, IGCSE results or an internal assessment, and it is reviewed rarely once made. Parents frequently disagree with it, in both directions: some want English A because it looks more rigorous on a university application, others want English B because it looks easier.

Both instincts can be wrong. A student with fluent conversational English and weak analytical writing often scores higher in English B HL than in English A SL, because the English B criteria do not require close reading of unseen literary text. A student who reads widely in English and writes well will find English B constraining and may ceiling out, because the marks available for linguistic risk are capped by the text type. The honest version of the conversation is about which set of criteria the student's existing skills already satisfy.

There is also a diploma-level consequence. A bilingual diploma can be awarded where a candidate completes two Group 1 languages, which means a student taking Arabic A and English A rather than Arabic A and English B. Some Dubai families care about that and should be told the route exists; others do not, and should not be pushed into a harder English course for a line on a certificate. The table below sets out what each course actually asks for.

The English B assessment structure, component by component

English B has three assessed components and no written coursework beyond the recorded oral. The external papers carry 75% of the grade between them and the internally assessed oral carries 25%, at both SL and HL. That split is worth saying plainly to a Dubai parent, because the school report often reflects classwork and the final grade reflects two papers sat in a hall and one recording made in a quiet room.

Paper 1 is productive writing. The student chooses one of three prompts, each tied to a prescribed theme, and writes in a specified text type for a specified audience. It is marked out of 30 across three criteria: language, message, and conceptual understanding. Paper 2 comes in two halves sat in sequence - listening first, then reading - and between them they make up half the final grade. The individual oral is recorded and assessed by the teacher, then moderated by the IB.

The difference between SL and HL is duration, depth and the oral stimulus. HL Paper 1 runs longer, HL listening runs longer, and the HL oral starts from an extract from one of the two literary works studied rather than from an image. Every figure in the table below should be confirmed against the current English B subject guide or your child's Diploma coordinator before you plan a revision timetable around it, because the IB revises course structures on a cycle and a school's internal deadlines sit inside those dates.

Where English B marks are lost, criterion by criterion

English B marking is criterion-referenced, which means a student is not awarded a grade for an impression of quality but a mark for each named criterion. Paper 1 and the individual oral are each marked out of 30 across three criteria. Knowing which criterion is leaking marks changes what a session does, and it is the piece of information most students cannot get from a returned school mock, because teachers under time pressure write a total and a comment.

Criterion A, language, covers range and accuracy. It is the criterion Dubai students usually score best on and the one families assume is the problem. Criterion B, message, covers whether the ideas are relevant, developed and organised for the stated audience and purpose. It is where most marks are lost, and it is lost in the first thirty seconds of planning rather than in the writing. Criterion C, conceptual understanding, covers whether the student has registered context, purpose, audience, meaning and variation in register - the thing that distinguishes a letter to a head teacher from a post on a school forum.

The practical consequence is that the fastest grade movement in English B comes from planning discipline, not from vocabulary. A student who spends four minutes identifying the audience, the text type's conventions and the purpose before writing will pick up marks in B and C that no amount of additional lexis would have earned. That is a habit, and habits are built by repetition under supervision, which is what a one-to-one session is for.

05

The individual oral: a visual stimulus at SL, a literary extract at HL

  • SL: unseen visual stimulus tied to a prescribed theme, supervised preparation, 3-4 minutes then discussion
  • HL: extract from one of the two studied literary works, same timings
  • Recorded and moderated, so a weak performance cannot be re-sat informally
  • Ten rehearsals with playback is the intervention with the clearest effect

The individual oral is the component Dubai students are least prepared for and the one most within reach of short-notice work. At SL the student is given a previously unseen visual stimulus linked to one of the five prescribed themes, has a short supervised preparation period, then speaks for three to four minutes before a discussion with the teacher. At HL the stimulus is an extract from one of the two literary works studied, which changes the preparation entirely: the student must know the works well enough to place the extract and argue from it.

The recurring SL failure is description. A student shown a photograph of a crowded market will describe the photograph. The marks are in using the image as a springboard to the theme - what it suggests about identity, or consumption, or urban life - and in sustaining an argument for the full time. The recurring HL failure is a reading schedule that never happened, so the student meets an extract from a work they skimmed in a week and has no textual memory to draw on.

Both are rehearsal problems. A tutor can supply unseen stimuli in the same style week after week, record the student's four minutes, play it back, and ask the discussion questions a teacher would ask. Students who have done that ten times walk into the real oral having already had the experience. Students who have not are improvising on the one occasion where improvisation is most expensive, with a recording that goes to the IB for moderation.

06

Paper 1 text types and the register trap

  • Text type is named in the prompt and its conventions carry criterion C marks
  • Fifteen-plus text types, each with a distinct opening, layout and sign-off
  • Register practised in pairs on identical content, not through more full papers
  • Audience identified in writing before the first sentence is drafted

Paper 1 names the text type in the prompt, and the conventions of that text type carry marks under criteria B and C. The list a Dubai student needs to be able to produce on demand is long: blog, article, brochure, diary entry, email, essay, instructions, interview, letter, news report, proposal, review, set of guidelines, speech, and more. Each has conventions, and the conventions are not decorative. A speech that does not address an audience, a proposal with no recommendation, a review that does not evaluate - each of those loses marks that were available for free.

The register trap is specific to students in English-medium Dubai schools. They write the register they hear, which is the register of a classroom and a group chat. Asked for a formal letter to a school principal, they produce something fluent and slightly too familiar. Asked for a blog post, they produce something stiff and essay-shaped, because formal writing is the only register they have been graded on. Moving between registers on demand is a teachable skill, and it is the one that separates a 5 from a 7 on this paper.

In sessions this is drilled in pairs: the same content written twice, once as an email to a friend and once as a letter to an authority, then compared line by line. It is unglamorous and it works. The alternative - writing more full practice papers and hoping the register improves - is how students spend six months producing fifteen responses that all have the same problem, because nobody ever isolated the variable.

What English B tuition costs in Dubai, and what moves the number

Three of the six most visible agency and platform pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. The figures below are market rates in AED gathered from competitors' own published pages and from Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate table for 2026. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list: our rate for an English B specialist is quoted after the free trial lesson, when the component, level and session length are known.

What moves the number in Dubai is level, component and lead time. HL costs more than SL because the HL literary works mean preparation outside the session. The individual oral costs more per hour than Paper 1 work because rehearsal with playback is labour-intensive. And a booking made six weeks before a paper costs more per hour than the same work spread across two years, because the available tutors are the ones already carrying a full Year 13 load. Dubai school fees were held flat for 2026-27 under a KHDA decision announced in May 2026, which has not had the same effect on tutoring rates.

The one cost comparison worth making carefully is online against an in-home tutor. A Dubai in-home visit carries travel in both directions, which is why market rates for it sit above online rates even where the tutor is the same person. IB Gram does not offer in-person lessons in Dubai, so the comparison below is between what the market charges for each model rather than between two things we sell.

Academic honesty on a language acquisition course

  • A tutor teaches, marks and questions; the student writes and speaks
  • No scripted orals, no dictated Extended Essay paragraphs, no model answers to reproduce
  • No redistribution of IB syllabus documents, papers or mark schemes
  • Where a tutor is also a school teacher, they must not tutor students enrolled at their own school

English B carries less coursework than most Diploma subjects, which makes the academic-honesty boundary narrower but not less important. The individual oral is recorded and moderated. The Extended Essay, where a student chooses to write it in English B, is submitted work subject to the full academic-integrity framework. A tutor who crosses the line on either does not just risk their own reputation; the student faces an IB malpractice finding, and malpractice findings follow a candidate.

The boundary in practice: a tutor may teach text-type conventions, supply practice stimuli, mark the student's own responses against the criteria, explain why a mark was awarded, ask the questions an examiner would ask, and set reading. A tutor may not write any part of a submitted piece, may not dictate sentences for a student to transcribe into an Extended Essay, may not script an individual oral for memorisation, and may not supply model answers for a student to reproduce as their own. One agency in this market advertises completed Internal Assessments for sale; that is an integrity breach and we will not imitate it.

There is also a boundary around materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB and are licensed to schools. IB Gram links to official pages rather than redistributing files. If your child needs the current English B subject guide, their Diploma coordinator has it, and the published details in this page should be confirmed against that guide rather than treated as a substitute for it.

09

KHDA, mandatory Arabic and fitting English B into a Dubai week

  • KHDA inspects Dubai private schools annually on a six-band scale
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required alongside the IB curriculum
  • Usable weekday window for most Dubai Diploma students starts around 16:30
  • Ramadan sessions typically move to post-iftar timing by agreement

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and a school's band is a reasonable proxy for how much in-school support a struggling English B student will actually receive. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, with IB programmes accounting for roughly a fourteenth of enrolment.

The timetable constraint nobody mentions on tutoring pages is the mandatory UAE subject load. KHDA guidance requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and specified languages of instruction. For a Diploma student that is additional timetabled periods sitting on top of six IB subjects plus the core. English B is frequently the subject that gets the least independent study time as a result, because it feels like the one the student already speaks.

That is why the session slot matters as much as the tutor. A Dubai school day that ends between 14:30 and 15:30, plus a school run, plus mandatory-subject homework, leaves a usable window from about 16:30. Sessions in Gulf Standard Time from 16:00 to 21:30, Sunday to Thursday, with weekend mornings available, is what fits. During Ramadan, families generally move sessions to after iftar, and the schedule shifts for the month rather than pausing.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

English B tuition requests cluster around the Dubai communities where English-medium IB schools sit next to large non-anglophone resident populations. The notes below are about session timing and school mix rather than property prices, because those are the two things that decide whether a weekday slot works.

Al Barsha and Barsha South

The densest IB cluster in Dubai. Several Diploma cohorts here are majority non-native English speakers, so English B classes are large and streamed late. School days finishing at 15:00 make a 16:00 session realistic without a commute.

Emirates Hills, The Springs and The Meadows

Long-standing IB continuum schools with stable cohorts. Families here often want HL rather than SL support, and the pressure point is the HL literary works, which arrive in Year 13 when the Extended Essay is also live.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers

High turnover of mid-year arrivals, which means students joining English B three months into the course. Tower internet is reliable, and evening slots after 18:00 are the most requested because parents commute back from Media City and DIFC.

Mirdif and Al Warqa'a

Large Arab and South Asian expatriate populations with children in English-medium IB schools. Requests here skew towards Arabic A paired with English B for the bilingual diploma, and towards Paper 2 listening work.

Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Long school runs in both directions push sessions past 17:30 on weekdays. Several schools here moved from MYP to IGCSE at Year 10, so incoming English B students carry second-language exam habits that need undoing.

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

A mix of Francophone and bilingual schools alongside English-medium IB schools, so English B here is often a third language in the household. Saturday-morning sessions are popular because weekday evenings are taken by sport.

Deira, Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

Older established schools with Indian and Arab curriculum roots that now run IB alongside. English B candidates here frequently sit it at SL while taking three sciences at HL, which makes session length rather than frequency the planning question.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Emirates Hills and the Springs corridor

The schools below run the Diploma and between them account for a large share of Dubai's English B entries. Students here are typically placed at HL if they came through the MYP and at SL if they arrived from IGCSE English as a Second Language.

  • Dubai International Academy - Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy - Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Mirdif, Deira and Dubai Festival City

This cluster holds the largest Arabic-first-language Diploma cohorts in the city, so English B and Arabic A are frequently taken together. Several of these schools run IGCSE at Year 11 before the Diploma, which shapes what students bring into Year 12.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Uptown International School
  • Deira International School
  • Greenfield International School

Al Quoz, Al Sufouh and the southern communities

Bilingual and continuum schools where English sits alongside French, German or Arabic as a language of instruction. English B students from these schools often have strong listening scores and weak formal written register, which is an unusual profile to teach.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Horizon International School

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai IB ecosystem; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from, or commercial relationship to any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

A fifteen-minute call or a short form: level, school, which of Paper 1, Paper 2 or the oral is the problem, and the most recent mark with the criterion breakdown if the school gave one. That is enough to match. Without it, the first two sessions are spent diagnosing what a mark sheet would have shown.

  2. 02

    See two tutor profiles

You get the component history, the year groups they teach, the levels they take and the hours they hold open in Gulf Standard Time. You choose. If neither fits the slot you need, say so and we look again rather than pushing the available one.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

Forty-five minutes, one per family, no card details taken. The tutor sets a short Paper 1 task or runs a stimulus so you both see how the student performs rather than how they talk about performing. You get a written note of what the session found.

  4. 04

Agree the plan and the marking rhythm

How many sessions a week, which component first, how often a full task gets marked, and what you see between sessions. For English B that last point matters: ask for marks by criterion letter, because a total tells you nothing you can act on.

  5. 05

    Review at session six

Six sessions is enough to see whether the criterion that was leaking marks has stopped. If it has not, the plan changes or the tutor does. Grade movement in English B shows up in marked task scores before it shows up on a school report, so that is what we look at.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by component, not by postcode

Because delivery is online, the pool of English B specialists is not limited to those who could drive to your community by 16:30. A family in Mirdif gets a tutor who has taught the HL oral for years rather than the nearest available English teacher.

Marking against the published criteria

Every marked Paper 1 response comes back with criterion letters and marks, not a percentage. That is what lets a student see that their language score is fine and their message score is not, which is the single most useful thing a Dubai English B student can learn.

Honest about what we do not sell

IB Gram runs no UAE home visits and no UAE office. Sending a tutor to an address is something we do in India only. Saying so plainly is more useful than a page that implies a local presence and then books an online lesson.

Gulf Standard Time scheduling

Slots from 16:00 to 21:30 Sunday to Thursday and weekend mornings, set in Gulf Standard Time rather than converted from another zone. Ramadan timings move to post-iftar by agreement rather than the month being written off.

Clear academic-honesty boundaries

Tutors teach, mark, question and set reading. They do not script orals, draft Extended Essay paragraphs or supply model answers for reproduction. That boundary protects the student's candidature, which is worth more than a faster draft.

Prices and sources both stated

Market rates on this page are in AED and attributed to the page or rate table they came from. Our own figure is quoted after the trial, once level, component and session length are known, rather than advertised as a band that moves at checkout.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is English B the right IB course for a child who has been in an English-medium Dubai school since Year 4?+

Often yes, and the length of time in an English-medium school is not the deciding factor. What decides it is whether the student's analytical reading and formal written register are strong enough for Group 1 criteria. A child who has spoken English at school for eight years may still write in a classroom register and struggle with unseen non-literary analysis, which is English A Paper 1's whole business. The school makes the placement from MYP phases or IGCSE results. If you disagree, ask the Diploma coordinator which evidence they used and what a trial English A Paper 1 would show.

How is the English B individual oral different at HL and SL?+

The timings and criteria are the same; the stimulus is not. At SL the student receives a previously unseen visual stimulus linked to one of the five prescribed themes, prepares briefly, speaks for three to four minutes and then discusses it with the teacher. At HL the starting point is an extract from one of the two literary works studied during the course, so the student must know those works well enough to place the extract and argue from it. In practice that makes HL preparation a reading-schedule problem across Year 12, while SL preparation is rehearsal with unseen images.

What does Paper 1 in IB English B actually ask a student to write?+

One task, chosen from three prompts, each tied to a prescribed theme. The prompt names the text type, the audience and the purpose, and all three carry marks. A prompt might ask for a speech to a school assembly, a proposal to a local council or a blog post for a student site. It is marked out of thirty across three criteria: language, message, and conceptual understanding. Most lost marks sit in message and conceptual understanding, because students write good English that ignores the named audience or the conventions of the named text type.

Why does my child score well in class essays but badly in English B Paper 1?+

Because a class essay and a Paper 1 task are marked for different things. School essays usually reward content knowledge and clear argument. Paper 1 rewards doing what the prompt instructed, in the text type it specified, for the audience it named, and shows that in criteria B and C. A student with one good register - the formal essay - will write that register whatever the prompt asks for, and lose the conceptual-understanding marks every time. The fix is register drill on identical content across different text types, not more full practice papers.

How much of the English B grade comes from listening?+

Listening sits inside Paper 2 alongside reading, and Paper 2 is half the final grade at both SL and HL. Treating listening as a quarter of the whole course is a reasonable working assumption for planning revision, though you should confirm the current split against the English B subject guide. Few Dubai schools timetable dedicated listening practice, because there is no neat homework to set for it, so it is often the largest unworked component in a student's preparation. Twice-weekly recorded practice over six to eight weeks is what moves it.

Can an English B tutor help with the two HL literary works?+

Yes, and this is where HL support earns its cost. The two works supply the extract for the HL individual oral, so a student who skimmed them in the fortnight before the recording has nothing to argue from. A tutor sets a reading schedule across Year 12, works through the sections most likely to appear as extracts, and builds a quotation and context bank the student can actually recall. The reading itself stays the student's work. The tutor's job is pacing, discussion and making sure the works are in memory before they are needed.

Does a bilingual IB diploma require English B or English A?+

A bilingual diploma is awarded on the basis of two Group 1 languages, so English B does not count towards it. A Dubai student wanting one would typically take Arabic A alongside English A rather than English B. There is a second route, through completing a Group 3 or Group 4 subject in a language other than the Language A, which some schools support and many do not. Confirm with your child's Diploma coordinator before planning around it, and weigh whether the award is worth moving a student into a harder English course.

How many English B sessions a week do Dubai Diploma families usually start with?+

One a week is the normal starting point in Year 12 and for most of Year 13, rising to two in the final term or when a specific component is close. Two a week from the start tends to produce diminishing returns in English B, because the gains come from marked written work and rehearsal, and both need time between sessions for the student to produce something. Where listening is the diagnosed problem, the pattern that works is one session plus two short recorded practice sets the student does alone.

Can a tutor help with an Extended Essay written in English B?+

A tutor can help with scope, research question, source quality and the differences between the language, culture-and-society and literature categories, which carry different evidence expectations. They can read a draft the student has written and ask questions about it. They cannot write any part of it, dictate sentences, or restructure paragraphs into final form. The Extended Essay is submitted work under the IB's academic-integrity framework, and a malpractice finding follows a candidate. Your child's assigned school supervisor remains the person who signs off the process.

Is online English B tutoring workable for a student in Mirdif with a 15:30 school finish?+

Yes, and the timing is the reason online works better than a visit here. A 15:30 finish plus a school run means the student is home around 16:15. An online session can start at 16:30 with no further travel for anyone. A visiting tutor crossing Dubai at that hour would arrive later, cost more because travel is priced into the rate, and be drawn from whoever covers that area. IB Gram delivers one-to-one lessons over live video and makes no home visits in the UAE, which is how the Mirdif slot stays at 16:30.

What does IB English B tutoring cost per hour in Dubai?+

Market rates in Dubai for a qualified subject tutor working online run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, on figures published by providers in this market and by Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table. In-home one-to-one sits higher, around AED 180-500, because travel is priced into the rate. Those are market figures rather than ours. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson, once the level, the component and the session length are known, so you are comparing a real number rather than a band.

Does my child need English B if their school teaches every subject in English?+

Every Diploma candidate takes a Group 2 language, so the question is which one rather than whether. For a student whose Language A is Arabic, French or Russian, English B is the natural pairing and the course that matches their actual profile. For a student whose strongest language is English, Group 1 English plus a different Group 2 language is usually the better fit. Being taught in English all day is not the same as being assessed against Group 1 criteria, which is the distinction Dubai placement decisions turn on.

How late in Year 13 is it still worth starting English B support?+

Components respond at different speeds, so the answer depends on which one is broken. Paper 1 register and task compliance can improve inside four to six sessions, because it is a planning habit. The individual oral responds to two or three weeks of recorded rehearsal. Listening needs six to eight weeks and does not compress well. Starting eight weeks out with a clear diagnosis is useful. Starting two weeks out is worth doing for the oral and for Paper 1 planning, and is honestly too late for listening. No tutor can promise a particular grade from any starting point.

Do IB English B tutors working with Dubai students need a MoHRE private tuition work permit?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need a private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued free of charge for two years through MoHRE's smart app, website and e-services system. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so ask any tutor you engage directly and verify on mohre.gov.ae.

What happens if no English B specialist is free at the time we need?+

You are told, rather than offered a general English teacher with the subject name attached. English B HL oral work and criterion-level Paper 1 marking are specific skills, and the pool of tutors who do them well is smaller than the pool of good English teachers. Where nobody suitable holds your requested slot, the options are a different slot with the right specialist, a tutor outside the UAE working in Gulf Standard Time, or a wait with a date attached. Delivery is online in every case, so location is never the constraint; availability is.

Start with the component that is costing the marks

If you know which part of English B is going wrong, say so and the match takes a day. If you do not, the trial lesson will show it: forty-five minutes with a timed Paper 1 task or an unseen stimulus tells a specialist more than a term of school reports. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with marked work returned by criterion letter so you can see what moved. Book the trial, read the tutor's component history first, and decide after you have seen a session rather than before.
