IB DP Biology HL Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP biology HL tutor in Dubai should be able to show you, in writing, which question type is costing your child marks. Higher Level Biology is not one skill but six, and a student can be fluent at recall and lose a grade on data questions about experiments they have never performed. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. The first one is free and ends with a question-type ledger rather than a sales pitch.

  • Every session leaves a written note naming the next practice task
  • Marks are logged by question type, not only by topic
  • The scientific investigation is 24 marks across four criteria
  • Investigation feedback is on the student's own drafts, with a dated history

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A Biology HL grade is limited by question type, not by topic coverage

Parents are given topic information and ask topic questions, because that is what a report card contains. A Higher Level biology report will say that a student is secure in cell biology and developing in genetics, and a family will reasonably conclude that the genetics teaching needs repeating. Look at the marked script and the picture is usually different: the student answers recall questions in both topics perfectly and loses marks in both on the same thing, which might be data interpretation, or a drawing without labels, or an explanation that stops one causal step short.

That is why a useful record of progress in this subject is a question-type ledger rather than a topic list. Six types carry nearly every mark in Higher Level Biology. Multiple-choice recognition in Paper 1A. Data-based questions in Paper 1B, usually drawn from experiments the student has never performed. Short recall and definition items. Mechanism questions, where an explanation has to form a causal chain. Comparison questions, where the command term is compare and contrast or distinguish. And extended evaluation, where a student has to weigh evidence rather than describe it. A student's profile across those six is almost never flat.

Higher Level Biology also has a volume problem that interacts with all of this. The course runs to roughly 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, across four themes covering unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change, with content organised from molecules up to ecosystems. A student with a weak question type is losing the same marks across an unusually large body of content, which is why the loss compounds and why rereading notes produces so little. Rereading improves recall, and recall was not the problem.

Evidence is the way out of that loop, and it has to be generated rather than inferred. A marked question tells you which type failed and why. Twenty marked questions across six weeks tell you whether the fault is moving. A predicted grade, by contrast, is a teacher's honest estimate built from the evidence that teacher happens to hold, and a student who performs well in class discussion and badly on data questions can carry a flattering prediction into a mock and a disappointing one out of it.

Dubai sets the practical frame. KHDA oversees 227 private schools in the emirate, which enrolled 387,441 pupils across 17 curricula in 2024-25, and Diploma students carry mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside six subjects. Biology is commonly taken at Higher Level by students targeting medicine, dentistry and life sciences, which makes the grade consequential and the timing tight. This page sets out the six question types, the two that fail most often, how the statistics requirement catches students late, what the 24-mark investigation rewards, and what the evidence should look like after a month.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Biology HL sits inside the Diploma. The programmes below are where the habits that produce good biology evidence are formed, or are not.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Biology HL runs to around 240 taught hours including a 10-hour collaborative sciences project, assessed by Paper 1 at 36 per cent, Paper 2 at 44 per cent and a scientific investigation at 20 per cent.

In Dubai, Biology HL carries a disproportionate share of Extended Essays, because students aiming at medicine often choose the subject for it. That doubles the evidence a family should be collecting in DP1: marked biology questions on one track and supervised essay milestones on the other. Where both are drifting, the essay usually has the earlier hard deadline and should be protected first.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of criterion-assessed science with strong investigation design and, in most settings, no external examination. MYP leavers come into Higher Level Biology able to plan an experiment and without practice at answering forty multiple-choice items against a clock.

A Dubai school running MYP to Year 11 produces biology students whose written work is often better than their examination performance, because the criteria rewarded depth and the papers reward precision under time pressure. For these students the first evidence worth collecting is a timed Paper 1A set, which usually reveals a gap nobody had measured.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses alongside a career-related study and a personal and professional skills course. A CP student taking Biology HL sits the same papers and submits the same investigation, marked identically, with the same four criteria and the same 3,000-word cap.

Dubai's CP provision is small and frequently health-related, which makes biology a common choice within it. Placement blocks in the week mean the evidence routine has to be weekly rather than daily, and a single marked question returned before a weekend session is usually more realistic than a nightly practice habit.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Biology HL is this page's subject. Families often pair it with one of the courses below, usually because the same analytical skill is assessed twice under different schemes.

Biology

SL and HL

Four themes from molecules to ecosystems, assessed by a split Paper 1, an extended-response Paper 2 and a 24-mark investigation. At Higher Level the marks most often lost are on data questions about unfamiliar experiments and on mechanism explanations that stop a step short.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and reactivity themes with the same assessment architecture. The molecular overlap is real, and students taking both frequently find that an enzyme or respiration answer improves once the underlying chemistry is secure.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Statistics-heavy and technology-active. AI students usually arrive at the biology statistics requirement already comfortable with tests and spread, which saves several sessions in DP2 when most students meet them for the first time.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. AA students handle biology's rate calculations and magnification arithmetic quickly, and the gap that appears instead is in interpreting spread and variability, which AA covers more lightly.

Physics

SL and HL

Five themes with the same assessment model. Measurement is shared: uncertainty, significant figures and graph work are marked in both subjects, and a single consistent treatment avoids a student learning two contradictory conventions.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Anatomy, exercise physiology and nutrition, with an investigation on the same four criteria. The physiology overlap with Biology HL is substantial, and one tutor can usually serve both courses without a second arrangement.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

An interdisciplinary course counting as a science or a humanities subject. Ecology, diversity indices and systems thinking overlap directly with the interaction and interdependence theme in biology.

Psychology

SL and HL

Approaches, options and an internal assessment based on a simple experimental replication. The biological approach draws on the same physiology, and the report's statistics are the usual reason Dubai psychology students ask for science support.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research essay supervised by the school. Biology is one of the most chosen subjects for it in Dubai, and the supervision boundary is the same as for the investigation: feedback on the student's own drafts only.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition and a prescribed-title essay. Biology students write well on the natural sciences, since variability between living organisms is a concrete route into questions about what counts as reliable evidence.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, each generating a different kind of evidence. All are delivered one-to-one over live video; IB Gram does not make home visits in Dubai, where in-home tutoring is not a service we offer.

Question-type ledger sessions

A weekly 90-minute session built around a mixed set of questions deliberately chosen to sample all six types. Each question is marked before the lesson and entered in a ledger by type, so the profile becomes visible after three weeks rather than after a mock.

  • Questions chosen to sample every type, not to follow the class order
  • Each entry records type, topic, marks available and marks gained
  • The ledger goes to the parent, not only to the student

Data and statistics block

A short defined run of sessions on data-based questions and the statistical tools a Higher Level biology answer is expected to name, aimed at the one question type that most often limits a grade in this subject.

  • Questions drawn from unfamiliar experimental contexts on purpose
  • Spread, error bars and test selection practised to the mark scheme
  • A before-and-after comparison on matched question sets

Investigation and essay feedback

Criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own investigation drafts, and where applicable on Extended Essay drafts the school supervisor has already seen. The student designs, measures and writes; the tutor comments and keeps a dated record.

  • Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation addressed separately
  • School supervision respected rather than duplicated or contradicted
  • No research question, data processing or text supplied by the tutor

Six question types carry every Higher Level Biology mark

  • Type, not topic, is usually what limits a Higher Level biology grade
  • Three marked questions per type make the profile visible
  • Practise the failing type on content the student already knows
  • A ledger turns a school meeting into a specific conversation

Sorting a marked paper by question type rather than by topic changes what a family does next. Higher Level Biology questions fall into six groups, and each rewards a different behaviour. Recognition items in Paper 1A reward speed and elimination. Data-based questions in Paper 1B reward processing and judgement about evidence. Short recall and definition items reward precision of wording. Mechanism questions reward a causal chain. Comparison questions reward structure, because an answer that describes two things separately rarely scores the comparison marks. Extended evaluation rewards weighing rather than listing.

A student's profile across those six is normally uneven, and the unevenness is the diagnosis. The commonest shape we see in Dubai schools is strong recall, strong recognition, weak data interpretation and weak mechanism explanation. That student will be described by a school as knowing the content, which is true, and will still be two grades below where the recall alone suggests. The second commonest shape is the reverse: a thoughtful student who reasons well and loses marks on precision because definitions are paraphrased.

Building the ledger takes three sessions. A mixed set of questions is chosen to sample every type, marked against the published scheme, and entered with type, topic, marks available and marks gained. By the third entry per type the pattern is visible. From there the plan writes itself: practise the failing type on content the student already knows, so the variable under test is the skill rather than the recall.

The ledger also makes a conversation with the school useful. A parent arriving at a meeting with a sheet showing data-based questions scoring 40 per cent of available marks against 85 per cent on recall items is asking a specific question. A parent arriving with the impression that their child is struggling in biology is asking one that cannot be answered.

Data-based questions about experiments your child has never seen

Paper 1B presents data from real experimental work and asks a student to work with it. The context is deliberately unfamiliar: a study on a plant species the student has never grown, an enzyme assay with a method they have not run, a field survey from an environment they have not visited. Students who have revised by topic find this disorientating, because nothing in their notes matches the stimulus, and a good number conclude that they have not been taught the material. They have. The material being tested is the handling of evidence, not the organism.

The marks are specific and recoverable. There is usually a mark for reading a value correctly from a graph or table, including units. There are marks for describing a trend accurately, which means naming the direction, the magnitude and any change in gradient rather than saying it increases. There are marks for interpretation, which requires a biological reason rather than a restatement. There are marks for evaluating the method or the data, typically for sample size, control, or variability. And there are frequently marks for a calculation such as a rate or a percentage change.

Students lose marks in two characteristic ways. The first is describing where interpretation was asked for, which is the single most common fault we see in Dubai scripts and is a command-term reading problem. The second is ignoring error bars or spread entirely, then stating a difference as real when the data do not support it. Both are fixable in a short block of sessions, because neither requires new content knowledge.

Practice has to use unfamiliar contexts on purpose. A student who practises data questions on topics they know well is practising recall with a graph attached. We choose stimuli from outside the taught sequence deliberately, which feels harder and is the only way to build the skill the paper is testing.

03

Drawings, annotation and the marks that need a label rather than a sentence

Biology awards marks for drawing and annotating, and these are among the easiest marks in the subject to collect and among the most commonly thrown away. The requirement is unusual in that prose does not help. A question asking for a labelled diagram wants labels, with lines that touch the structure they name and names spelled correctly. A question asking for an annotated diagram wants a short functional note attached to the label. A student who writes a paragraph beneath a sketch has produced something the mark scheme cannot credit.

The rules are mechanical. Lines drawn with a ruler, touching the structure, not crossing one another. Labels outside the drawing, aligned, written horizontally. Proportions roughly right, since a question about a structure may award a mark for relative size. No shading or artistic detail, which earns nothing and costs time. For a micrograph-based question, a magnification calculation with the units stated. For a graph a student is asked to sketch, axes labelled with units, a sensible scale and the shape correct at the ends as well as in the middle.

Annotation is where Higher Level students lose most. The note has to do work: not simply naming the structure again but saying what it does or why its features matter. A label reading mitochondrion scores the label mark; an annotation reading mitochondrion, site of aerobic respiration, inner membrane folded to increase surface area does the annotation work as well. Students under time pressure write the first and assume the second was unnecessary.

This is quick to fix and worth doing early. Ten drawings practised properly, marked against the scheme, usually settles the habit for the rest of the course. It is also one of the few areas where a student can be shown a before and after on the same page, which has a motivating effect that abstract advice does not.

Comparison questions, and the margin table that earns them

Compare and contrast, distinguish between, and outline the differences are among the most frequent command terms in Higher Level Biology and among the worst answered. The reason is structural. A student who knows both things being compared will often write a paragraph about the first and a paragraph about the second, both accurate, and score poorly. The mark scheme awards comparison marks for paired statements: a feature of one set directly against the corresponding feature of the other, in the same sentence or the same row.

The remedy is a thirty-second margin table drawn before writing. Two columns, one per item, and three or four rows for the features the question implies. Fill the cells in note form, check that every row has both cells completed, then write the answer from the table. A row with one cell empty is a mark that was going to be lost, visible before any prose was written. Students who adopt this habit typically gain several marks per paper immediately, because the knowledge was already present and only the structure was missing.

Distinguish is the sharper version of the same skill. It asks for differences specifically, and a student who offers similarities is answering a different question. Compare and contrast asks for both, and an answer with only differences loses the similarity marks. Reading the exact term before planning is therefore not pedantry; it determines which rows the margin table needs.

This also applies to the extended evaluation questions, where a judgement has to be reached. A margin plan with points on each side and a line for the conclusion prevents the commonest Higher Level fault, which is a well-informed answer that lists considerations and never states what the student actually concludes. The mark for the judgement is usually the one that separates the top band.

Why a strong DP1 biology student stalls in DP2

  • Assessment in DP2 samples eighteen months of material, not the current unit
  • Questions combine themes that were taught and revised separately
  • Weekly questions from older material reveal decay quickly and cheaply
  • A lower mark on older content is information, not a setback

A pattern repeats in Dubai Diploma schools. A student finishes DP1 with a solid biology grade, having been assessed mostly on recently taught material in familiar formats, and then drops in the DP2 autumn. The content did not become harder in a single term. What changed is that assessment began sampling eighteen months of material at once, in unfamiliar contexts, with questions that combine themes rather than testing them in isolation.

Three things cause the stall. The first is retrieval decay across a large course: material learned a year earlier and not revisited since is effectively gone, and a student who has only ever revised the current unit has no system for the rest. The second is combination: a Higher Level question may require genetics and cell biology in the same answer, and a student who knows both separately may not have connected them. The third is the data and evaluation question types, which appear more heavily in later assessment and which a DP1 of unit tests may never have sampled.

The response is a sampling routine rather than a revision marathon. Each week, questions are drawn deliberately from material taught at least two terms earlier alongside the current unit. The point is not coverage; it is to find which older material has decayed, which takes very few questions to reveal. Students resist this because it produces lower marks than practising the current topic, and that is exactly why it is useful: the lower mark is information, and a comfortable mark on this week's content is not.

This also makes the DP2 autumn predictable rather than alarming. A family that has been sampling since DP1 will have seen the decay as it happened and will be adding review rather than reacting to a mock. A family that has not will meet the whole gap in one result, usually in the same month as university application deadlines.

The statistical tools a Higher Level Biology answer is expected to name

Biology is a quantitative subject in a way that surprises students who chose it as the less mathematical science. The current guide's skills requirements expect a student to work with measures of central tendency and spread, to understand standard deviation and what error bars represent, to recognise when a statistical test is appropriate and which one, and to use a diversity measure in an ecological context. Students should confirm the exact expectations for their cohort with the school's Diploma coordinator, since guides are revised and schools teach to the version their students are examined on.

What matters for marks is interpretation rather than computation. A student is rarely asked to perform a test by hand. A student is very often asked what a result means, whether a difference between two means is likely to be real given the spread, what a correlation does and does not license, or why a larger sample changes confidence in a conclusion. Those are the marks on data questions and in the investigation's conclusion and evaluation criteria.

The timing problem is familiar. Statistics tends to be taught alongside whichever practical first requires it, and students then meet it again under pressure while writing the investigation, by which point the data have already been collected in a design that may not support any test at all. A student who understands in DP1 that comparing two means requires replicates in both groups will design something analysable. A student who learns it in DP2 is often left describing data that cannot answer their own question.

We cover this as a short block early, with worked interpretation rather than derivation, and then return to it inside data questions throughout. Students taking Applications and Interpretation mathematics usually need less of it; students on Analysis and Approaches often need more, because spread and variability get lighter treatment there.

The scientific investigation: 24 marks, biological variability and the authorship line

The scientific investigation is worth 20 per cent of the Biology HL grade, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each, with a 3,000-word cap. In biology it has one feature the other sciences do not share to the same degree: living material varies. Two plants grown under identical conditions give different results, and a design that does not account for that produces data nobody can draw a conclusion from.

That makes research design the criterion where biology investigations are won or lost. A measurable research question needs a stated range, stated increments, and controlled variables that are genuinely controllable. Replication is not optional in a biological study, and a student working with five organisms per group rather than one will be able to say something about spread, which feeds directly into the data analysis and conclusion criteria. A student with one organism per condition has produced an anecdote.

The evaluation criterion rewards specificity, and in biology that means naming the biological source of variation rather than reaching for human error. Age of the organism, time of day, position in the growth tray, prior condition of the sample: these are real, checkable weaknesses with realistic improvements attached. Human error earns nothing and signals to a marker that the student has not thought about their own method.

On authorship the position is simple and worth stating before it is tested. The investigation is submitted as the student's own work and the school certifies it. A tutor may explain how the criteria are read, comment on a draft the student has produced, note that an evaluation is generic or that a conclusion does not answer the original question, and teach a technique on separate data. A tutor may not choose the research question, process the student's data, restructure the report or supply text. We keep a dated log of drafts received and comments returned, which is the only authorship evidence anyone can produce if a school asks.

What a marked Biology HL script shows that a predicted grade cannot

A predicted grade is a teacher's honest estimate built from the evidence that teacher holds, and in biology that evidence is often weighted towards the formats a school assesses most. A student who contributes well in lessons, writes good extended answers and performs poorly on data questions can receive a prediction that reflects the first two. The prediction is not wrong as an estimate; it is built from an incomplete sample, and the student discovers the gap in a mock.

A marked script is narrower and more useful. It shows which question type failed, which command term was misread, whether units were present, whether a mechanism answer had two links or one. Twenty marked questions across six weeks show whether any of that is moving. That is a different kind of information from a grade, and it is the kind a family can act on: it names a practice task rather than a level of concern.

We write the review at six weeks and state one of three outcomes. Continue, because the ledger shows the failing type improving. Change focus, because the ledger shows the original diagnosis was wrong or a second type has emerged. Or stop, because the gap has closed or because six weeks of evidence shows no movement and adding sessions is unlikely to change that. The third outcome is the one families remember, and it is the reason the review exists.

There are things we will not claim at that review. We will not predict a grade, because no tutor can. We will not attribute a mock result to our sessions, because a student's own work, a school's teaching and the sampling of a particular paper all contribute. And we will not present a single good week as a trend. What the review contains is the ledger, the change in it, and a recommendation a parent can disagree with.

What a Biology HL grade is asked for, and what support costs in Dubai

Most Dubai families investing in Higher Level Biology are doing it because of where the grade leads. Medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy and the life sciences commonly specify biology, often with chemistry, and the level and grade required are published per programme and change between admissions cycles. The useful step is to read three named programme pages for the current cycle rather than relying on a general statement about the IB, and to do it before the DP1 subject-change window closes.

Separately, the UAE Ministry of Education runs a certificate equivalency process with documented requirements that are not the same thing as a university prerequisite. For the British track, five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one A-Level at no less than E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. For the American track, mathematics requires at least 450 in SAT Math, with English evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing. No IB points threshold should be quoted unless read on the Ministry's own site, and no tutoring is required for the process.

On cost, published Dubai rates read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 33 to AED 65 an hour for budget online providers, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit including the tutor's travel, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an IB specialist, with monthly packages of about AED 799 for eight online sessions advertised in the same market. Those are market figures rather than our price list. For this subject the question worth asking is whether marking and a written ledger are included, since those are what the page has argued for throughout.

Two practical notes. Anyone paid to tutor privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is issued free of charge for two years and applied for through MoHRE's own service; no schedule of fines for working without one is published, so no figure should be quoted as fact. And where no Higher Level Biology specialist is free in the slot a family needs, we say so and charge nothing rather than allocating a tutor who has not taught the course.

Dubai communities and the biology evidence routine that fits them

Delivery is online across the emirate, so the community affects when a session can run and what a weekly evidence routine can realistically look like, rather than travel.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Heights

Villa communities with bus routes of around half an hour to schools in Al Barsha and Al Sufouh. A 5pm start works, and the practical routine here is one marked question returned on a Wednesday for a Thursday session.

Al Sufouh and Knowledge Village

Close to several campuses, so students often finish early and have a genuine late-afternoon window. Families here most often run two sessions a week, one on data questions and one on written mechanism answers.

Al Wasl and Safa

Central with short commutes and a high concentration of medicine-bound students. The evidence conversation here tends to start from a university requirement rather than from a report card, which changes what we measure first.

Bluewaters and Jumeirah Beach Residence

High-rise living with narrow study space and frequent travel. Timed papers are harder to sit properly at home, so we set them for weekend mornings and keep weekday sessions for marking rather than sitting.

Nad Al Hamar and Ras Al Khor

Longer cross-city routes to Jumeirah and Al Quoz schools, which pushes sessions past 6pm. A fortnightly rhythm with two marked questions between sessions suits these families better than a weekly one that gets cancelled.

Dubai South and Expo City

Newer communities with limited local Diploma provision, so most students commute a long way. Weekend blocks dominate, and the mark log is the main record a parent reads, since they are rarely present during a session.

Liwan and Dubailand

Growing family areas with mixed curricula in the same street. Students here often arrive into Higher Level Biology from a British route mid-year, and the first task is measuring what the transfer left out rather than following the class.

Trade Centre and DIFC

Apartment communities with parents working late, so sessions commonly run after 7pm. Written notes matter more here than anywhere else, because the parent reading them was not in the room.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the school report and one recent assessment

A report tells us what the school sees. A recent assessment, ideally with the marks per question visible, tells us what a mark scheme saw. The gap between the two is usually where the first session starts, and it is why we ask for both.

  2. 02

Free first session on a mixed question set

The student answers a short set chosen to sample several question types, marked beforehand. The free session is spent on the pattern rather than on a single topic, and the note afterwards is the first entry in the question-type ledger.

  3. 03

Three weeks to a visible profile

Three marked questions per type make the profile clear. Until then we do not commit to a plan, because a single weak answer may be a bad evening rather than a weakness and designing a term around it wastes the term.

  4. 04

Practise the failing type on familiar content

If data interpretation is the gap, the questions used are on topics the student already knows well. Keeping the content constant means the skill is the only variable, and the improvement is attributable rather than guessed at.

  5. 05

    Six-week review, written down

The review states continue, change focus, or stop, with the ledger attached. We do not predict a grade and we do not claim credit for a mock result. Where six weeks show no movement, stopping is the recommendation we make.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marks are logged by question type

A topic list cannot explain why a student who knows the content scores two grades below it. A ledger recording type, topic, marks available and marks gained can, and it usually points at data interpretation or mechanism explanation rather than at a theme.

Data questions are practised on unfamiliar contexts

Paper 1B uses experiments a student has never performed, so practising on familiar topics trains recall with a graph attached. We choose stimuli from outside the taught sequence deliberately, which is harder and is the skill the paper tests.

Older material is sampled every week

Higher Level Biology is a large course and retrieval decays. Weekly questions drawn from material taught two terms earlier reveal decay cheaply, and a lower mark on old content is information rather than a setback.

The review can recommend stopping

Six weeks of ledger either shows the failing question type improving or it does not. Where it does not, adding sessions rarely changes that, and we write down the recommendation to stop rather than keeping a slot filled.

We will not claim what cannot be evidenced

No grade prediction, no attribution of a mock result to our sessions, no statistic without its source. Market rates here are published Dubai figures from October 2026, and IB session dates are absent because they could not be verified.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which question types carry the most Higher Level Biology marks?+

Six groups cover nearly all of them. Recognition items in Paper 1A, which reward speed and elimination across forty questions. Data-based questions in Paper 1B, drawn from unfamiliar experiments. Short recall and definition items, which reward the examination's own wording. Mechanism explanations, which need a causal chain rather than a single statement. Comparison questions, where compare and contrast or distinguish demands paired statements. And extended evaluation, which requires a stated judgement. A student's performance across these six is almost never even, and the unevenness is the diagnosis a topic-based report cannot provide.

How do we find out which biology question type is costing marks?+

By marking questions against the published scheme and recording the result by type rather than by topic. A mixed set is chosen to sample all six types, each question is marked before the lesson, and the entry records type, topic, marks available and marks gained. Three entries per type make the pattern visible, which takes about three weeks. Until then we do not commit to a plan, because a single weak answer can be a bad evening. The output is a sheet a parent can take to a school meeting showing, for instance, 40 per cent on data interpretation against 85 per cent on recall.

Why does my son freeze on biology data questions about unfamiliar experiments?+

Because he is looking for the content in his notes and the question is not testing content. Paper 1B deliberately uses an organism, assay or habitat the student has never worked with, and what it assesses is the handling of evidence. The marks are specific: reading a value with units, describing a trend by direction and magnitude, calculating a rate, explaining the pattern biologically, and evaluating sample size, control or variability. Two faults dominate: describing where interpretation was asked for, and ignoring spread or error bars and then calling a difference real. Both respond to a short block of practice on deliberately unfamiliar stimuli.

Do biology diagrams need labels or sentences to earn marks?+

Labels, and prose beneath a drawing usually earns nothing. A labelled diagram wants ruled lines touching the structure, written horizontally outside the drawing, with correct spelling. An annotated diagram additionally wants a short functional note: not the structure named twice but what it does or why a feature matters. Proportions can carry a mark, so relative sizes should be roughly right, while shading and artistic detail earn nothing and consume time. Micrograph questions want a magnification calculation with units and working shown. Ten drawings practised properly against the scheme usually settles the habit for the rest of the course.

What does an explain command term require in Higher Level Biology?+

A causal chain, which in practice means at least two linked statements where the second follows from the first and reaches the consequence the question asked about. A single accurate statement is normally worth half the available marks. The commonest Higher Level failure is stopping one step short: naming the mechanism without saying what it produces, or naming the outcome without the mechanism. Counting the links in each answer makes this measurable, and it is one of the few faults a student can self-check once the habit exists. Describe, by contrast, wants observable features with no causal reasoning, and extra prose there earns nothing.

Why did a strong DP1 biology student stall in DP2?+

Because the assessment changed rather than the content. DP1 assessment usually samples recently taught material in familiar formats. DP2 assessment samples eighteen months at once, in unfamiliar contexts, with questions that combine themes taught separately. Three causes follow: retrieval decay on material not revisited, failure to connect topics that were learned in isolation, and heavier use of data and evaluation question types that unit tests may never have sampled. The response is weekly questions drawn from material taught at least two terms earlier, which reveals the decay quickly. Students resist it because the marks are lower, which is precisely why it is informative.

How is the Biology Higher Level investigation marked?+

Out of 24 marks across four criteria of six marks each, worth 20 per cent of the final grade, with a 3,000-word cap. Research design rewards a measurable question with stated range, increments and controlled variables, and in biology it requires replication sufficient for natural variability. Data analysis rewards processing that shows spread rather than means alone. Conclusion rewards an answer to the original question that acknowledges variability and compares with theory. Evaluation rewards specific biological sources of variation with realistic improvements, and human error as a named weakness earns nothing. The marking is identical at Standard and Higher Level.

What statistics does a Biology HL student need to know?+

Interpretation more than computation. The skills expected include measures of central tendency and spread, standard deviation and what error bars represent, recognising when a statistical test is appropriate and which one suits the data, and using a diversity measure in an ecological context. Confirm the exact expectations for your child's cohort with the school's Diploma coordinator, since guides are revised. Questions rarely ask for a test to be performed by hand; they ask what a result means, whether a difference between means is likely to be real given the spread, and why sample size changes confidence. Those marks appear in data questions and in the investigation.

What evidence should a parent see after a month of biology sessions?+

Four things. A question-type ledger with at least three entries per type, recording marks available against marks gained. A short written note after every session naming the next practice task. The marked questions themselves, with the scheme visible so a parent can see which specific link or label was missing. And a plain statement of what has moved and what has not. If the ledger shows no movement in the failing type after four weeks, the honest response is to change focus or to stop rather than to add sessions, and that recommendation should be in writing.

Can a predicted grade in Biology HL change?+

Yes, because a prediction is an estimate built from the evidence a teacher holds, and new evidence changes it. A student predicted below where they want to be should be producing marked work in the formats the school assesses least, since those are usually where the prediction is under-informed. What no tutor can do is promise a prediction will move, and any provider framing it as a purchase is selling something they do not control. The useful approach is to generate evidence, take it to the subject teacher, and ask specifically what would need to be demonstrated for the prediction to be revised.

Is Biology Higher Level required for medicine applications from Dubai?+

Many medical schools specify biology, frequently at Higher Level and usually with chemistry, but the requirements are set per programme and differ between institutions and between admissions cycles. Some faculties require chemistry at Higher Level and accept biology at Standard Level; others require both at Higher Level. The practical step is to read three named programme pages for the current cycle before the DP1 subject-change window closes, then confirm with each admissions office. A requirement published two years ago, or summarised on a tutoring site, is not evidence. No tutoring arrangement changes a published prerequisite.

How is a biology grade used in UAE certificate equivalency?+

Equivalency is a certificate-recognition process run by the Ministry of Education and is separate from university admission. Its published requirements are expressed per curriculum rather than per subject grade. For the British track, five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one A-Level at no less than E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. For the American track, mathematics needs at least 450 in SAT Math, with English evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing. No IB points figure should be quoted unless read on the Ministry's own site.

What is a fair hourly rate for a Biology HL tutor in Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 33 to AED 65 an hour for budget online providers, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit including travel, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an IB specialist, with premium named tutors advertised up to AED 650. Monthly packages of about AED 799 for eight online sessions appear in the same market. Those are market figures rather than our price list. The question that changes value most is whether marking and a written ledger are included, since without them there is no record of which question type is failing.

How many biology sessions a week should a DP2 student book?+

One 90-minute session a week with a marked question returned beforehand suits most students and produces a usable ledger within three weeks. Two shorter sessions suit a student working on a specific question type, because the practice benefits from frequency. In the final weeks before the written papers, families commonly move to two or three sessions built around full timed papers. Beyond three a week the limiting factor is sleep rather than teaching, particularly for students in communities with long bus routes, and we would rather say that than fill the slots.

What if no Biology Higher Level specialist is free in our time slot?+

We tell you before anything is booked and nothing is charged. Biology at Higher Level is widely taught, so an outright absence of availability is uncommon; the usual constraint is a specific recurring time, such as 4.30pm twice weekly in term time, which cannot be filled by a UAE-based tutor. The alternatives offered are the nearest workable slot, a weekend block, or a specialist in another time zone whose hours overlap Gulf Standard Time. What we will not do is accept the booking and allocate someone who has not taught this course at this level, which is how a family ends up paying for general science help.

Ask for the ledger before you ask for a package

An IB DP biology HL tutor in Dubai is worth paying for once there is a record showing which question type is losing marks. The free first session produces the first entry in that record: a mixed question set marked against the published scheme, sorted by type, with a written note you can take to the school. Three weeks give a visible profile and six give an honest review, which may say continue, change focus, or stop. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the school timetable and mandatory subject periods.
