Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 Tutor in Dubai

Hiring a Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 tutor in Dubai is a budgeting decision as much as an academic one, because 0510 spreads its demands across reading, writing, listening and speaking rather than concentrating them in two written papers. This page prices the hours skill by skill, compares what each provider model in the emirate charges with sources attached, and explains how IB Gram delivers 0510 support to Dubai households on live video.

  • Rates here are other companies' published figures, named and dated
  • Hours costed by skill, so you can see what you are buying
  • Writing is marked in full against the task, not corrected in the lesson
  • One-to-one on live video; no tutor is sent to a UAE address

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

0510 costs what it costs because it asks for four different things

Parents pricing 0510 tuition in Dubai usually start from a number they heard for maths and find it does not fit. The reason is structural. English as a Second Language assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking, and a candidate can be comfortable in three of them while a single weak skill holds the grade down. Buying one hour a week of general English is therefore an inefficient way to spend money on this syllabus, because the hour tends to land on whichever skill the tutor enjoys teaching.

The published market gives a range to work within. EdFlik lists tuition from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget end. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. BartyED charges AED 650 for its premium tier. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180-350, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500 once the drive is priced in. Each of those figures belongs to the company named beside it, read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price.

What those bands do not tell you is how many hours a 0510 candidate needs, and that is the number that decides the bill. In our experience the writing component absorbs the largest block, speaking needs several short sessions rather than a few long ones, listening improves faster through unsupervised practice than through paid teaching, and reading sits somewhere in between. Costing a term by skill rather than by week is the one change that most often reduces what a Dubai family spends on this subject.

There is also a decision upstream of the budget. Some Dubai schools enter students for 0510 who would be better served by English as a First Language, and some do the reverse. Getting that wrong wastes a year of hours on the wrong skill set, so this page includes a comparison table of 0510 against 0500 that you can take to a parents' evening. The entry sheet, not a tutor's opinion, is the document that settles which syllabus number applies.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition as one-to-one lessons on live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. For 0510 that matters more than for most subjects, because speaking practice needs a tutor who can hold an unscripted conversation at a controlled level, pitched just above where the student is comfortable, and the pool of people who can do that well is not distributed evenly across Al Nahda, Al Qusais and International City. The hour that an in-home arrangement would spend on Dubai traffic goes into marking a written task instead, and the marked task is the part that moves a 0510 grade.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cambridge offers more than one route for a student learning in English without first-language fluency. The code on the entry sheet decides what gets assessed, how speaking is reported, and therefore what a term of tuition should cover.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary English as a Second Language

The stage where accuracy habits form. Checkpoint tests run in March, May and October and give a school an early signal about which of the four skills is lagging. Work at this stage is inexpensive relative to its effect, because a Year 8 student still has time to build listening stamina through habit rather than through paid hours.

Dubai schools use Checkpoint inconsistently as a diagnostic. Ask which skill came out weakest rather than asking for the overall band, because the overall band hides exactly the information a parent is paying to discover two years later.

0510Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)

Reading, writing, listening and speaking are all assessed. Under syllabus code 0510 the speaking test is reported separately from the overall grade rather than counted into it. Component structure and timings were revised for recent exam years, so confirm the current component list for your child's exam year on cambridgeinternational.org rather than relying on an older paper's format.

0510 is widely entered in Dubai's British-curriculum schools, including by students who have been educated in English for years but speak another language at home. The entry choice is made by the school department, so ask when it was reviewed; a decision taken in Year 9 is often left unchallenged into Year 11.

0511Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language, Count-in Speaking (0511)

The same subject with speaking counted into the overall grade rather than reported separately. For a confident speaker that is an advantage worth having; for a student who freezes in an oral it is a risk. The tutoring plan changes accordingly, with far more short conversation sessions and recorded practice on unfamiliar topics.

Not every Dubai school offers both codes, and some enter the whole cohort for one of them. If your child is articulate in conversation and loses marks in writing, it is worth asking the department which code they are entered for and why, well before the final entry deadline.

AS/A LEVELAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level English Language

The progression route for students who finish 0510 strongly and want to keep English as an academic subject. The jump is real: analysis of language use replaces task-based communication, and writing is judged on control rather than on accuracy alone. Students who left 0510 with weak writing usually need that gap closed before Year 12 rather than during it.

Dubai sixth forms split between A Level and the IB Diploma. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0510 rarely arrives alone on a Dubai timetable. The subjects below are the ones whose cost and difficulty are most affected by a student's English, with the syllabus code so you can check the entry sheet.

English as a Second Language (0510)

Cambridge IGCSE

This page's subject. Four skills, assessed separately, with speaking reported apart from the grade. Writing absorbs most tuition hours because task fulfilment, register and precision are all marked, and most candidates have written few pieces to time.

English as a Second Language, Count-in Speaking (0511)

Cambridge IGCSE

The variant where the oral counts towards the grade. Worth checking before buying speaking sessions, because the value of oral practice changes completely depending on which code the school entered.

English as a First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

The alternative entry. Two written papers, no listening or speaking component in the grade, and a much heavier analytical demand. Some Dubai students sit it successfully after a strong 0510 performance in Year 10.

English Literature (0475)

Cambridge IGCSE

Taken by a minority of 0510 candidates and demanding for them, because essay writing about a writer's method sits well above the language level 0510 requires. Budget for it as a separate subject, not as English practice.

French (0520)

Cambridge IGCSE

Often a third language on a Dubai timetable. Students juggling 0510 alongside a modern foreign language and Arabic have three sets of vocabulary learning competing for the same evenings, which is a scheduling cost before it is a money one.

Arabic as a Second Language (0544)

Cambridge IGCSE

Arabic is mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. For many 0510 candidates this is the single largest competing homework load.

Mathematics (0580)

Cambridge IGCSE

Word problems punish weak reading comprehension, so a 0510 candidate sometimes loses maths marks for language reasons. Worth diagnosing before paying for a second maths tutor, because the repair may belong in the English session.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Cambridge IGCSE

Practical papers with dense written instructions. Candidates who misread a task lose marks they could do the work for, which is the clearest example of English cost showing up on somebody else's mark sheet.

Biology (0610)

Cambridge IGCSE

Terminology-heavy and precise. Extended answers reward exact wording, so 0510 students benefit more from learning to define than from learning to elaborate. Two or three sessions of command-word work usually pays for itself here.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Because 0510 splits across four skills, session length matters as much as session count. These three shapes cover almost every 0510 plan we write for a Dubai family.

Weekly writing session with marked tasks

The main block. One written task set between sessions in a specified form, marked against what the task asked for rather than on general fluency, then rebuilt in the live hour. Register, audience and task completion get scored separately from accuracy, because a candidate can write flawless sentences and still miss half the marks for answering a different question.

  • One written task marked in full between sessions
  • Task fulfilment and register judged apart from grammatical accuracy
  • Model answers written on a different topic, never on the student's own task
  • Sixty minutes, weekly, in a Gulf Standard Time slot

Short speaking sessions

Thirty minutes, twice a week during a speaking block. The format is deliberately uncomfortable: an unseen topic, a prompt, and a push to develop answers past one sentence. Shorter sessions cost less than full hours and work better, because oral stamina builds through frequency rather than duration. Recorded extracts let a student hear their own hesitation, which is usually more persuasive than being told about it.

  • Thirty-minute sessions, two a week during a block
  • Unseen topics rather than rehearsed answers
  • Short recordings kept only with consent, and deletable on request
  • Priced below a full hour, so frequency is affordable

Listening and reading drill cycle

The cheapest part of a 0510 plan. The tutor sets structured listening and reading practice, marks the answers, and spends a short live session only on the question types that went wrong. Most of the work happens without a tutor present, which is the honest position: paying somebody to sit through a recording with your child is not where the value is.

  • Practice set and marked, with a short live review
  • Focus on detail questions, numbers and distractors
  • Designed to be dropped once the error pattern disappears
  • Lowest cost per mark gained of the four skills

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What 0510 is, and what Dubai parents often think it is

A Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 tutor in Dubai is teaching a qualification for students who work in English without first-language fluency. 0510 assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking, with the speaking test reported separately from the overall grade under that code. It is not a remedial qualification and it is not an easier version of English for weaker students, which is the most common misunderstanding we hear on first calls.

The practical consequence is that 0510 marks are lost in places a general English tutor does not look. A candidate can speak fluently, read a newspaper comfortably, and still lose a grade because written tasks ignored the stated audience, or because listening answers missed the number in a distractor. Those are specific, teachable failures, and each one has a different cost in hours. That is why this page prices the subject by skill rather than quoting one hourly figure and leaving you to guess.

IB Gram delivers 0510 support to Dubai families as one-to-one lessons on live video. We do not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are available only through our India service. The reason this suits 0510 specifically is the speaking component: holding an unscripted conversation at a controlled level is a skill, and online delivery lets a Dubai family choose somebody who has it rather than somebody who lives nearby and is free at five. A student in Deira and a student in Dubai Silicon Oasis can work with the same specialist on the same evening, which is not possible with a car.

02

0510 or 0500: the decision upstream of the budget

Before pricing anything, establish which syllabus your child is entered for and whether it is the right one. Dubai schools make this call at department level, often in Year 9, and it is rarely revisited. A student who has been taught in English since primary and reads widely may be under-placed in 0510, losing the analytical stretch that selective sixth forms look for. A student placed in 0500 who is still building written accuracy may be set up to lose a grade for reasons unrelated to intelligence.

The table below is written to be taken to a parents' evening. It compares the two syllabuses across what is assessed, how speaking is handled, who each suits, where marks leak, how each counts for equivalency and university entry, and what each implies for a tutoring plan. The honest headline is that these are different subjects, not two difficulty levels of the same one, and the tutoring hours look different as a result.

One practical warning. If an entry change is being considered, the deadline matters more than the argument. Cambridge entry deadlines sit months ahead of the exam window rather than weeks ahead of it. A Dubai centre enters 0510 in the June series, its final entries close in the spring term, and the next series after that is November, which is a resit route rather than a reschedule of the same attempt. Ask the department for the closing date by name, or read it off the statement of entry the centre issues, because nobody will volunteer it. A conversation in February about moving syllabus is usually a conversation about next year, so raise it early with the head of English. Ask on what evidence the original placement was made, and whether any written work has been reviewed since.

What the Dubai market charges, by provider model

Comparing tutoring quotes in Dubai is hard because the models are not comparable. A freelance tutor found through a community group, an agency with a replacement policy, a marketplace pricing in dollars, a tuition centre with premises, and an online platform are five different purchases. The table compares them on the things that actually differ: the published rate, who published it, where the permit duty sits, and what happens when the arrangement fails.

Two columns deserve attention. The permit column matters because private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted through MoHRE free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. A centre with premises and staff is a different animal again and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit as a training institute. IB Gram is not a Dubai training institute and holds no permit, approval or accreditation from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or the IB.

The replacement column matters because 0510 plans run for terms, not weeks. A freelance arrangement that ends in March leaves a family searching during the worst possible month, while an agency or platform should be able to propose somebody else within days. Ask for that in writing before paying, along with what happens to unused sessions. Rates below are quoted with their sources and the month they were read; they describe the market, not an IB Gram price list.

Where the hours go, skill by skill

This is the section that changes what a Dubai family spends. Most 0510 plans sold in this market are one hour a week for a year, which is a comfortable product to sell and a blunt instrument to buy. Costing by skill produces a different shape: a long writing block, a short intense speaking block, a brief listening cycle that gets dropped once the error pattern disappears, and a small amount of whole-paper rehearsal at the end.

The numbers in the table are session counts drawn from how 0510 plans actually run rather than from a price list, multiplied against the market mid band of AED 150-300 an hour that Unitors' published floor and Bestimate's survey both point to. They are indicative. A student with strong writing and a terror of speaking inverts the whole shape, which is exactly why a diagnostic conversation before booking is worth more than a discount.

Two savings are available to almost everybody. Listening practice does not need a paid hour to sit alongside it; it needs setting, marking and a short review. And speaking works better in thirty-minute sessions twice a week than in a weekly hour, which costs less in total. A provider who sells you four full hours a month of mixed-skill English is not wrong, but they are not optimising for your bill. Ask any quote to be broken into skills with a session count against each, and compare the shapes rather than the headline rates; the differences between providers show up there far more clearly than they do in an hourly figure.

05

Listening and speaking, the components Dubai families underestimate

Almost every 0510 enquiry we take from Dubai is about writing. Almost every 0510 marked paper we read shows listening losing marks quietly. The reason is that listening feels like a passive skill and therefore like something that cannot be practised, when in fact the losses are concentrated in a handful of predictable traps: a number said twice with the second one correct, a speaker who corrects themselves, a distractor that answers a question slightly different from the one asked.

Those traps are learnable in two or three sessions, which makes listening the cheapest grade movement available in the subject. The work is mostly unsupervised: structured practice set by the tutor, answers marked, and a short live review of the question types that went wrong. Paying a tutor to sit beside a student through a recording is not a good use of AED 200 an hour, and we say so rather than selling the hour.

Speaking is the opposite case, undervalued for a different reason. Under 0510 the oral is reported separately from the grade, so some families reasonably deprioritise it, while under 0511 it counts and deprioritising it is expensive. Either way the skill that gets assessed is development: taking an unfamiliar prompt and building past one sentence without rehearsed phrases. That improves with frequency, so short sessions twice a week beat a monthly hour, and recorded extracts let a student hear their own hesitations instead of being told about them.

06

How a 0510 grade counts for equivalency and university entry

A 0510 pass is an accredited IGCSE subject, and for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track students must submit proof of five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which is a detail at least one ranking tutoring site in this market gets wrong by claiming six subjects are needed.

That makes the English grade structurally important rather than just academically desirable, because it is almost always one of the five. It does not, however, make tutoring a requirement for equivalency, and any provider implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency; the authority does that, and parents should verify current requirements through the Ministry of Education or their emirate's attestation channel before making decisions.

University entry is a separate question with separate answers. Some selective courses outside the UAE prefer or require first-language English rather than ESL, some accept 0510 without comment, and some ask for a separate language test regardless. The American-track equivalency rules give a sense of how test-based thresholds work: English proficiency there requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Ask the specific university, in writing, rather than accepting a tutor's general reassurance.

07

The costs that are not the tutor's: entry, re-marks and resits

Families budgeting for 0510 often forget that the tuition line is not the only line. If a candidate sits through their school, entry costs are usually inside school fees, and KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package. If a candidate sits as a private candidate, the exam centre sets both the entry charge and its administration fee, and a tutor has no part in that transaction and should not be quoting figures for it.

Re-marks and reviews of results are a second cost with a tight deadline, and the decision is better made before results arrive than during the week they do. The same is true of a retake entry: Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, so a candidate who narrowly misses in June can usually re-sit in November, but the entry deadline for that series arrives faster than most families expect. Ask the exams officer for the centre's internal cut-off dates, which sit earlier than Cambridge's own.

The third forgotten cost is timetable risk. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. A family revising from a timetable found online rather than from the centre's zone version is carrying a risk that no amount of tutoring offsets.

08

What cheap buys, and what it leaves out

The AED 45 an hour arrangement made through a community group chat is not automatically bad teaching, but the price tells you what is missing. Usually it is marking. Reading a 0510 written task properly against what the task demanded, then writing feedback a student can act on, takes a meaningful share of an hour, and at the budget rate nobody can afford to do it. The lesson becomes a conversation, and conversations improve confidence rather than grades.

The second omission is diagnosis. A tutor who starts with a textbook rather than with a marked paper is guessing which of the four skills is costing marks, and in this subject guessing wrong is the standard failure mode. The third is continuity: an informal arrangement has no cover when the tutor leaves Dubai in June, and 0510 plans that get interrupted in the final term rarely recover inside the same academic year.

There is also the permit question, which parents are entitled to ask about directly. The permit itself is free, so cost is no excuse for its absence, and reporting from Abu Dhabi indicates that ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff there from paid tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, a position worth verifying against the current policy document. None of this makes a low rate dishonest. It means the figure on the invoice is not the whole comparison, and a page that quotes rates without saying so is not helping you decide.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

0510 entries cluster in parts of Dubai where English is the school language and another language is the family one. The communities below are where we take the most 0510 enquiries, with what tends to be different about each.

Al Nahda

A dense, multilingual residential belt with several large private schools within a short radius. Enquiries here frequently involve two or three children in the same household at different stages, which changes the budget conversation more than the teaching one.

Al Qusais

Long-established schools and a cohort where students have often been taught in English since primary. The weakness is rarely vocabulary; it is precision in writing tasks and detail-level listening, which are cheap to fix once identified.

Deira and Al Rigga

Older apartment stock, short commutes and a wide spread of school types. Families here are the most price-sensitive we deal with, and the skill-by-skill costing in this page was built largely from those conversations.

International City

A highly multilingual community where students often speak three languages daily and write confidently in none of them. Speaking marks tend to be strong, writing marks weaker, which is the opposite of the usual Dubai pattern.

Al Warqa and Mirdif

Villa communities feeding a cluster of British-curriculum schools. Afternoon traffic is bad enough here that in-home tuition quotes carry a visible premium, which is one reason online slots fill quickly.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

A newer secondary cohort with a mixture of boards. Mid-year transfers are common, and a transferring 0510 student often arrives entered for a different code than the one they were taught toward.

Karama and Oud Metha

Central, well served by schools and public transport, and the community where group classes at tuition centres are most widely used. Group pricing is genuinely lower per student; the trade is the group's pace.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, The Villa and Jebel Ali

Large British-curriculum campuses with substantial multilingual intakes and sizeable 0510 cohorts. Students from here usually read well and lose marks on written task fulfilment, which is a teachable repair rather than a language problem.

  • GEMS Founders School - Al Barsha
  • GEMS FirstPoint School - The Villa
  • GEMS Winchester School Dubai
  • Nibras International School
  • The Westminster School Dubai

Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Al Warqa

A spread-out eastern belt where school choice is wide and mid-year movement frequent. The first job with students from this cluster is usually to confirm which syllabus code they are entered for before any teaching is planned.

  • GEMS Wellington Academy - Silicon Oasis
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Uptown International School
  • Dubai English Speaking College

These schools are named to describe Dubai's schooling market. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or commercial relationship with any school, school group or regulator named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the syllabus code first

0510 and 0511 need different plans, and 0500 needs a different tutor. The code is on the entry sheet, not on the report card. If the school has not confirmed it, ask the head of English before booking, because a term spent practising the wrong component is the most expensive mistake available here.

  2. 02

    Send one marked written task

A returned email, report or article task with a teacher's comments shows whether marks were lost on register, on task fulfilment or on accuracy. Those three failures look identical to a parent and need different teaching. If nothing recent exists, we set one short task before the trial.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, then a costed plan

Sixty minutes at no cost, with no card details taken. Afterwards you get a plan broken down by skill with a session count against each, so the quote shows what you are buying rather than a monthly figure. If the honest plan is four sessions rather than a term, that is what the plan says.

  4. 04

    Run the writing block first

Writing takes the largest share of hours and moves most reliably, so it goes first unless a speaking test is imminent. One task marked in full between sessions, with task fulfilment scored separately from accuracy, and a model written on a different topic rather than on the student's own piece.

  5. 05

Drop skills as they stop losing marks

The listening cycle ends once the error pattern disappears. The speaking block ends when answers develop without prompting. Reducing the plan is the normal outcome of it working, and we propose the reduction rather than waiting to be asked, which is the opposite of how a subscription is designed to behave.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced by skill, not by subscription

A plan that says six writing sessions, four short speaking sessions and two listening reviews can be checked against your child's marked paper. A plan that says one hour a week for a year cannot, and it is the shape almost every provider in this market sells.

EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase, BartyED and Bestimate published the figures quoted here, and the month they were read is stated. Three of the most visible competitors in this SERP publish no price at all, and one asks the price question in its own FAQ and declines to answer it.

Short speaking sessions, because they work and cost less

Thirty minutes twice a week builds oral development faster than a weekly hour and bills lower. Selling the hour would be easier. The reason to do it the other way is that the component rewards frequency, and the arithmetic happens to favour the family.

Delivered online, stated plainly

All UAE sessions run one-to-one on live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For a subject with a speaking component, being able to choose the right conversational partner matters more than their postcode.

No claims we cannot evidence

No promised grades, no invented satisfaction percentages, no self-declared star ratings, and no suggestion that we hold any regulator's approval. Where a fact could not be verified it is left out or marked unverified, which is why no IB session dates appear anywhere on this page.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a 0510 tutor in Dubai cost per hour?+

Published market rates run from AED 33-65 an hour at the budget end, where Tutopiya and EdFlik advertise, to AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor, with Unitors listing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180-500 once travel is included, per Bestimate's 2026 survey, and one premium provider publishes AED 650. All figures were read in October 2026 and belong to the companies named. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson rather than publishing a rate card.

Why is 0510 priced differently from a single-skill subject?+

Because four skills are assessed and they do not need equal hours. Writing usually absorbs six to ten sessions in a term, speaking needs three to five short ones, reading two to four, and listening often needs only two or three live reviews on top of unsupervised practice. A flat hour a week spends the same money across all four regardless of where the marks are leaking. Costing by skill is the single change that most often reduces what a Dubai family pays for this subject.

Is my child in the right syllabus, 0510 or 0500?+

The entry sheet answers which one they are in; the comparison table on this page helps you judge whether it is right. Broadly, 0510 suits a student working confidently in English without first-language fluency, while 0500 suits a student schooled in English throughout who needs analytical stretch. Dubai departments often set this in Year 9 and rarely revisit it. If a change is worth discussing, raise it early: Cambridge entry deadlines sit months ahead of the papers, so a February conversation usually concerns next year.

What is the difference between 0510 and 0511?+

The speaking test. Under 0510 the oral is reported separately from the overall grade; under 0511, count-in speaking, it is included in the grade. That single difference changes the value of oral practice completely. For a confident speaker 0511 is an opportunity, and for a student who freezes in an oral it is a risk. Not every Dubai school offers both codes, so ask the department which one your child is entered for and why before buying any speaking sessions.

Which 0510 skill gives the cheapest grade improvement?+

Listening, almost always. The losses concentrate in a few predictable traps: a number said twice where the second is correct, a speaker correcting themselves, a distractor answering a slightly different question. Those are learnable in two or three sessions, and most of the practice can be set, marked and reviewed briefly rather than done inside a paid hour. Paying a tutor to sit through recordings alongside your child is poor value, and we would rather say that than sell the hour.

Are group 0510 classes at a Dubai centre better value than one-to-one?+

Per hour, yes. Group pricing at Dubai centres commonly runs AED 90-180 per student, against AED 150-300 for a qualified online one-to-one tutor. The trade is pace and diagnosis: a group moves at the group's speed and nobody marks your child's written tasks against the specific thing they get wrong. Groups work well for listening and reading drills and poorly for written task fulfilment. A centre with premises and staff also needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is reasonable to ask about.

Do we pay for a tutor's travel if sessions are online?+

No, and that is a real part of the price difference. Bestimate's in-home band starts at AED 180 an hour partly because a visiting tutor is absorbing unpaid Dubai traffic between appointments, and that cost has to be recovered somewhere. Our UAE sessions run one-to-one on live video, so the hour you pay for is teaching time. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE at all; in-home visits are a service we run only in India.

How many months of 0510 tuition should we budget for?+

Think in blocks rather than months. A typical plan is a writing block of six to ten sessions, a speaking block of three to five short sessions, a listening cycle of two or three reviews, and two to four whole-paper rehearsals in the final six weeks. Spread across a Year 11 autumn and spring term, that is well under a year of weekly hours. Families who start in Year 10 usually spend less in total than families who start after the mocks, because fewer sessions do more.

Does a cheaper tutor mark written tasks properly?+

Usually not, and that is what the price is telling you. Reading a 0510 written task against what the task actually demanded, then writing feedback a student can act on, takes a serious share of an hour. At the budget band nobody can afford that time, so the session becomes a conversation about English. Conversations build confidence; marked tasks move grades. Before paying anybody, ask what gets marked between sessions and ask to see an example of their written feedback.

Can one tutor cover 0510 and my other child's 0500?+

Sometimes, but check rather than assume. The two syllabuses reward different things: 0510 rewards task fulfilment, register and precision across four skills, while 0500 rewards point selection in a summary and explanation of language effects. A tutor strong in one is not automatically strong in the other. Where a tutor genuinely covers both, running the two children back to back in one evening slot saves scheduling friction, and we will say openly if two different specialists would serve you better.

Does 0510 count towards the five subjects for UAE equivalency?+

Yes, as an accredited IGCSE subject. On the British track students must show five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. One ranking site in this market states that six subjects are required, which is incorrect. Verify the current rules with the Ministry of Education or your emirate's attestation channel; tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency.

Who pays for a re-mark if the 0510 grade looks wrong?+

The family, through the exam centre, and the window is short. The practical advice is to decide in advance: before results week, agree with your child what grade would trigger a review of results and what would trigger a November retake entry instead. Cambridge runs June and November series, so a near miss in June is usually re-sittable, but centres set internal cut-off dates earlier than Cambridge's own deadlines. A tutor has no role in the transaction and should not be quoting fees for it.

Should we pay for sessions during the summer holidays?+

For 0510, a short summer block before Year 11 is often good value, because listening and speaking both decay over a long break spent in another language. Two or three short sessions a fortnight keeps the habit without costing a term's budget. What rarely pays is a full programme across July and August at exam-term intensity; students return in September tired and no further forward. The cheaper plan is a light summer and a properly resourced autumn writing block.

Can sessions move during Ramadan without extra charge?+

Yes. School days shorten during Ramadan and attention shifts later, so many Dubai families move an afternoon slot to after Iftar for the month. Because lessons run on live video, that change costs nobody a journey and can be agreed week by week at no additional charge. Families who prefer to pause entirely keep their slot, and nothing is billed for sessions that do not take place. Short speaking sessions tend to survive the month better than long writing ones.
