IB and IGCSE tutors for International City families

Most enquiries about IB and IGCSE tutors in International City arrive with a budget attached, and the honest answer starts there. One well-chosen subject with a specialist beats four subjects with somebody cheap, and a large part of what fixes a grade costs nothing at all. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video, and this page is written so an International City family can tell which hours are worth paying for and which are not.

IB & IGCSE in International City

Class does one half of the course; your child does the other

The usual story in International City is a child who works hard, hands everything in, is described by the school as diligent, and then produces a test mark that makes no sense against any of it. Parents reasonably conclude that something is wrong with the teaching, or with the child. Usually neither is true. The course has two halves - the taught half and the half the student is expected to do alone - and the second half has quietly not been happening.

This is structural rather than anybody's fault. A teacher with a full class can explain a method, model one example and set practice. What the teacher cannot do is sit beside each student while they attempt thirty unprompted questions and work out which of the thirty went wrong and why. That diagnosis is the whole value of one-to-one teaching, and it is also what nobody is doing at home when a student completes homework correctly and learns nothing from it.

International City adds a specific pressure to this, which is worth naming without euphemism. Households here are more often working to a tight education budget than in the villa communities to the west, and they are often funding tutoring out of a monthly figure that has other claims on it. The market's response to that is a supply of very cheap hours, and a cheap hour spent supervising homework produces the feeling of tutoring with almost none of the effect.

So this page is organised around the decision an International City parent actually faces, which is not whether to get a tutor but how to spend a limited amount well. That means being specific about which single subject converts an hour into marks fastest, which subjects a disciplined student can fix alone with a past paper and a published mark scheme, where the Core and Extended tier decision caps a grade before any revision starts, and what a cheap rate usually indicates.

On delivery: lessons run one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing so the tutor and the student work on the same marked script. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For a household in International City that removes the travel premium an in-home tutor has to charge for the drive from the villa districts, and it widens the choice from whoever can reach Warsan to whoever teaches the specification.

Nothing on this page promises a grade, and no figure here is an IB Gram price. The rates quoted are market rates with the provider who published them named, so you can hold any quote - including ours - against them. What follows is the practical sequence: diagnose, fund the one subject that needs funding, and run the free half of the plan properly.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

International City children sit across several systems, and two programmes account for most tutoring requests. The notes below say what each one demands of the student outside lesson time, because that is the demand a budget has to cover.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Two years of specification-led courses examined at the end of Year 11. Every syllabus has a code - 0580, 0620, 0625, 4MA1 - and the code determines the papers, the tiering and the formula sheet. Cambridge offers Core and Extended routes on several subjects with different grade ceilings. With eight or nine subjects running at once, this is the year group where the gap between work required and hours available is widest.

Nearly all IGCSE requests from International City concern Years 10 and 11 at schools in Al Warqa, Al Qusais, Mirdif and Silicon Oasis. The most valuable thing a parent here can do costs nothing: ask the examinations officer for the syllabus code and the tier on the entry form, because a Core entry caps the grade however hard the student works.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject carries internally assessed work worth a meaningful share of the grade. The independent load is the heaviest of any school qualification, because coursework in several subjects runs at the same time as past-paper preparation for all six.

Diploma students living in International City usually travel the furthest of anyone in the community, since the nearby schools running the full Diploma are few. That makes a later weekday slot or a weekend block the realistic arrangement, and it makes coursework checkpoints better value than a long weekly programme.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject group, each marked out of eight and converted to a 1-7 grade. No external papers until an optional eAssessment at the end of Year 11, so every mark comes from interim tasks. A reported grade can therefore hide a weak criterion that will matter later, and parents are rarely shown the criterion breakdown unless they ask.

MYP requests from this community are usually best handled as a short block on one criterion rather than a standing weekly slot. Six weeks pointed at a single weak criterion is a far better use of a constrained budget than a year of general support, and it has a visible endpoint.

PYPAges 3-11 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units with reporting against learning outcomes instead of marks. What decides how Year 7 goes is reading fluency, number-fact recall and written stamina, none of which a prose report shows clearly. At this age thirty focused minutes beats a tired hour, which also makes it the cheapest stage at which to intervene usefully.

For primary children in International City the highest-value intervention is almost always reading. Twenty minutes of reading aloud daily, with a parent asking what just happened in the text, moves more than a paid hour a week at that age, and it costs nothing but the habit.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects International City families ask about most, with an honest note on whether a paid hour is the right tool. Some subjects need a specialist watching the student work. Others need marked practice the student can run alone, and buying a slot for those is poor value.

IGCSE Mathematics

Core and Extended

The best single candidate for a limited budget, because the failures are specific and visible. Extended candidates lose most marks on multi-step problems mixing two topics with no method signposted. Check the tier before anything else: a Core entry puts a ceiling on the grade regardless of how the revision goes.

IGCSE Physics

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Electricity and the written practical paper account for most of the lost marks. The practical paper tests reading someone else's method and finding its weakness, which is a skill almost no student practises, and it responds well to a handful of focused sessions rather than a term.

IGCSE Chemistry

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Moles calculations and organic chemistry decide the grade and both reward drill. A weekly slot earns its cost in Year 11; in Year 10 the same money is usually better left unspent, since the content is still being taught and self-marked practice does the same job.

IGCSE Biology

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Looks like memorisation, which is why students reread notes and make no progress. Marks turn on terminology precision and on answering the command term used. This is a subject a disciplined student can lift substantially alone with past papers and the published scheme.

IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences

Double award, Cambridge and Pearson

Covers all three sciences at reduced depth for two grades. Sound for students not heading to a science destination, and lighter on the timetable. The trade is post-sixteen: some sixth-form science combinations expect the separate route, so check before assuming the choice is neutral.

IGCSE English as a Second Language

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

A different qualification from First Language English, with different papers and a different purpose. It is widely accepted and perfectly respectable, but some institutions and some first-language courses expect the other route, so the question to ask is what the student will need it for later.

IGCSE English First Language

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Rewards a repeatable procedure for reading an unseen text under timing far more than it rewards wider reading. Directed writing and summary tasks have strict formats, and students lose marks to format rather than to language more often than parents expect.

IGCSE Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Both reward applying a few tools to unfamiliar material under timing. Students describe the business when the question asked them to evaluate a decision, and skip the quantitative sections. Short pre-mock blocks work better here than a long weekly commitment.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof and calculus are the pressure points at Higher Level, and the exploration moves whole grades because it is marked against five lettered criteria and treated by students as a write-up. The term the exploration is drafted is the one where a slot pays for itself.

Arabic as an additional language

School and IGCSE routes

Compulsory in every Dubai private school under KHDA rules, and the stream most budgets forget until a report lands. It needs its own tutor and its own target, and the match for Arabic as a first language is a different one again.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every request from this community, and they differ in cost by a factor of several. The point of setting them out together is that the cheapest arrangement is sometimes the right one, and the market rarely says so.

One subject, one weekly slot, with an end date

A single fixed hour on the one subject where marked work shows a specific failure, running for a defined block rather than indefinitely. Everything else in the plan is done by the student with past papers and the published mark scheme. This is the arrangement that fits most International City budgets and most International City problems.

  • One subject chosen from the diagnostic, not from the weakest report grade
  • Eight to ten sessions with a stated target, then a review
  • Self-marked practice set for the other subjects each week
  • Ends when the target is met rather than drifting into a subscription

A pre-exam block on paper technique

A short, concentrated run of sessions in the weeks before mocks or the real series, spent entirely on whole papers under timing and on the habits that decide whether knowledge reaches the page. Content teaching stops. It is the highest-yield use of a small budget, because it is the part students never do unsupervised.

  • Whole papers under timing, marked against the published scheme
  • Command-term drill until the verb triggers the right structure
  • A written plan for the first five minutes of each paper
  • Fixed number of sessions, agreed before it starts

A shared session for two children at the same stage

Two siblings or two neighbours at genuinely the same point in the same subject taking one hour together. It halves the cost per child and halves the number of evening slots a household has to find. It only works when the stages actually match, and it fails when children two years apart are put together to save money.

  • Same subject, same specification, same approximate position in it
  • Roughly half the one-to-one rate per child
  • Suited to revision and practice, not to a single diagnosed failure
  • Reviewed after four sessions, because mismatch shows up fast

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in International City

01

What the school supplies and what your child has to supply

The direct answer first. A school reliably supplies content coverage, modelled examples, set practice and marked assessments. It does not supply the volume of unprompted practice that converts understanding into marks, and it cannot supply individual diagnosis of why a particular student's attempts fail. Those two things are the student's half of the course, and in most cases where a diligent child underperforms, that half is missing rather than weak.

The distinction is worth making concrete. A student who can complete an exercise set after a lesson has demonstrated that they can follow a method while it is fresh. A student who can do a mixed question three weeks later, with no indication of which method applies, has demonstrated something quite different, and only the second thing is examined. Homework mostly tests the first. That is why a child can have a perfect homework record and a poor test record without anybody behaving badly.

The table splits the main subjects that way, with a fourth column that matters most for a budget: the cheapest fix that actually works. In several rows the cheapest fix is free. Past papers and mark schemes are published by the boards, and a student who works through them under timing and marks their own attempts honestly is doing the single most effective revision activity available at any price.

The one caution on doing it alone is marking. A student marking their own work tends to be generous, because they recognise what they meant rather than what they wrote. Where a paid hour earns its cost early, it is often in teaching a student to mark strictly against a scheme - which is a skill that transfers to every subject and then needs buying only once.

If you can fund one subject, which one should it be?

Most families answer this by picking the lowest grade on the report, which is the wrong method. The right question is not where the student is weakest but where an hour of expert attention converts into marks fastest, and those are different things. A subject that is weak because the student has not done the work does not need a tutor. It needs the work. A subject that is weak because a specific, identifiable step breaks every time does need a tutor, and quickly.

The sorting rule holds up well in practice. Fund the subject where the failure is specific and visible in the marked script: a method abandoned halfway, a calculation attempted in the wrong order, a question that is never started. Do not fund the subject where the failure is diffuse - a thin essay, patchy recall, content half-learned - because that responds to repeated marked practice the student can run themselves with a published scheme.

There is a second filter, which is leverage. Mathematics carries into the sciences, so fixing algebraic fluency improves three subjects at once and is usually the best single purchase in Years 10 and 11. Marking technique transfers everywhere and only has to be taught once. Command terms transfer across every written subject. A budget spent on something that transfers buys more than the same budget spent on a single subject's content.

The table gives the recommendation against the pattern you can actually see in the marked work. Use it with the script in front of you rather than with the report, because the report shows the outcome and the script shows the cause. If nothing in the table matches, the honest answer is often that no paid hour is needed yet, and that six weeks of structured self-marked practice should come first.

Core or Extended: the decision that caps the grade

This is the single most consequential thing most International City parents have never been told. Cambridge runs Core and Extended routes on several IGCSE subjects, and they are not two difficulty settings on the same grade scale. A Core entry makes a narrower range of grades available than an Extended entry. A student entered on Core cannot reach the top grades no matter how well they perform, because the papers they sit do not award them.

The decision is usually taken by the school, sometimes in Year 10 and often without a conversation, and it is recorded on the entry rather than in the report. Entries are finalised months before the examination - Cambridge closes final entries for its June series in the spring, and for the November series over the preceding summer, with the exact date printed on the centre's statement of entry - so by the time a parent sees a mock result the tier may already be fixed for that series.

What a family should do is simple and free. Ask the examinations officer, in writing, for the syllabus code and the tier on each entry, and ask what the school's criteria are for moving a student between tiers and by when. If a child is on Core and heading for a sixth form that expects higher grades, that conversation needs to happen early in Year 10, not after mocks in Year 11 when the entry window has closed.

Pearson Edexcel generally runs a single tier on its International GCSE subjects, which removes this problem and introduces a different one: a student who would have been comfortable on a Core paper sits the full paper regardless. Neither arrangement is better in the abstract. What matters is knowing which arrangement your child is in, because the ceiling it sets is invisible in a school report.

English as a Second Language and the first-language question

  • English as a Second Language is a full qualification, not a reduced one
  • Some destinations name First Language English or a separate proficiency test
  • On the American equivalency track, IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 is the English evidence
  • A late switch between the two courses is rarely worth it; ask the school early

A large share of students in this community sit English as a Second Language rather than First Language English, and parents are often unsure whether that matters. The straightforward position: it is a real, widely accepted qualification with its own papers and purpose, and for most students it is the right entry. It is not a lesser version of the other course; it is a different course with a different design.

Where it does matter is later, and only sometimes. Some sixth-form courses and some institutions specify First Language English or a particular grade in it, and some separately require an English proficiency test regardless of the school qualification. On the American equivalency track, for instance, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section - a school grade does not substitute for that.

So the useful action is to find out what the destination asks for, not to switch courses reflexively. If the student is heading towards a course that names First Language English, discuss the move with the school early, because it is a two-year course and a late switch is rarely sensible. If the destination is undecided, the stronger grade on the course the student is actually prepared for is worth more than a weak grade on a more prestigious-sounding one.

For tutoring purposes the two courses need different work. English as a Second Language rewards accuracy, register and following a task's format precisely; First Language English rewards analytical reading of an unseen text and controlled writing under timing. A tutor matched to the wrong one will teach competently and improve the wrong skills, which is another reason the entry code matters more than the subject name.

05

Past papers done properly: the free half of the plan

The most effective revision activity available to an IGCSE or Diploma student costs nothing. The boards publish past papers and mark schemes, and schools can supply them. A student who works through whole papers under timing and marks their own attempts strictly against the scheme will outperform a student who has twice as much tutoring and does none of this. That is not a motivational claim; it is what the practice actually produces.

It is also almost always done wrong. Students do papers topic by topic, with the book open, without timing, and mark generously because they recognise what they intended to write. Each of those four errors removes most of the benefit. Done properly the routine is narrow: whole paper, correct tier, strict timing, closed notes, then marking against the published scheme in a different colour, then a logged list of what was lost and why, retested a fortnight later.

Two rules keep it honest. First, mark to the scheme's wording rather than to your own judgement of whether the answer was reasonable - the scheme is the examiner. Second, log the reason for each lost mark in one of four categories: did not know it, knew it and misread the question, knew it and ran out of time, knew it and wrote the wrong structure for the command term. Those four categories lead to four different actions, and the log is what tells you which.

Copyright is worth a sentence. Past papers, mark schemes and subject guides belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB. Access them through the official sites or through your child's school rather than through a reseller, and treat any tutor offering a downloadable pack of them with caution - redistributing those materials is not theirs to do, and it says something about the rest of the operation.

06

What the market charges, and when a cheap hour is false economy

Market rates in Dubai span roughly an order of magnitude, and the spread is not mostly about greed. At the bottom are university students and part-time tutors supervising homework. In the middle are qualified subject tutors teaching a named specification. At the top are specialists in a particular paper, and above them providers selling scarcity. All four exist in this market and all four are rational purchases for different problems.

The figures below were read from provider listings and a published Dubai rate survey in October 2026. They are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list; ask us for our figure before booking and hold it against the band. One piece of context worth having while budgeting: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package, so the school-fee side of a family budget is at least stable this year.

The judgement to make is about fit rather than price. An AED 60 hour that keeps a Year 8 student in the habit of doing their homework is good value. The same AED 60 hour pointed at a Year 11 Extended Mathematics paper is likely to be poor value, because the tutor may not know the tier, the paper structure or the mark scheme well enough to diagnose anything. Paying a specialist rate for homework supervision is the opposite error and just as common.

Two warning signs are worth knowing in the cheaper part of the market. A tutor who cannot tell you which syllabus code they teach is not teaching to one. And a tutor who has not heard of the MoHRE private tuition work permit is unlikely to hold it, which is a reasonable thing to ask about, since the permit is free of charge and takes two working days to obtain.

Which schools International City children attend, and why the board matters

There is no large school inside International City itself, so every secondary student here is on a bus. The two main directions are north-east into Al Warqa, Al Qusais and Al Mizhar, and south into Silicon Oasis and Academic City, with a smaller flow along the creek to the Garhoud and Festival City schools. Those destinations sit on different boards and different curricula, which is the fact that matters for tutoring.

The recurring error follows from it. A parent describes their child's course by subject and year group, a tutor is matched on that, and several sessions in it becomes clear the tutor has been teaching a different specification. Cambridge and Pearson differ in paper structure, in tiering and in what appears on the formula sheet. Indian-curriculum schools differ from both. The fix is one question to the examinations officer, and it is free.

Some scale for context: KHDA counted 227 private schools and 387,441 pupils in Dubai in 2024-25 across seventeen different curricula, with the British route largest by enrolment and the IB around 7% of enrolment. Dubai is adding seven new private schools for 2026-27, four British and three IB, creating 16,846 places. The mix in a community's school list is therefore something that keeps changing rather than settling.

One clarification about the regulator, because parents sometimes assume more than is there. KHDA licenses and inspects Dubai private schools and publishes inspection outcomes on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. It does not license private tutors, and no tutoring platform is inspected under that framework. A school's band describes the school. IB Gram claims no approval, accreditation or licensing from KHDA or from any board.

08

The permit question, and what a very low rate often means

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and granted for two years
  • Ask any individual tutor whether they hold it; it is a two-day application
  • A tutor who cannot name the syllabus code is not teaching to one
  • No fine amounts are published, so none are quoted here

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE lists the application with no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Because the permit costs nothing and takes two days, a tutor who does not hold it has usually not looked into the rules at all - and the same person is often the one who cannot say which syllabus code they teach. That is the real signal in a very low rate. It is not that cheap tutoring is illegitimate; plenty of permitted, competent tutors charge modestly. It is that the absence of the permit tends to travel with the absence of everything else you want to check.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount appears on this page; a figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source. The permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules prohibit school staff from paid tutoring of students at their own school, so hiring your child's own teacher privately is not a route to take.

A business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different case again and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE, and delivers lessons online. Nothing on this site claims approval or accreditation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, because none is held.

09

Coursework support that keeps your child out of trouble

There are providers ranking for these searches that sell finished internal assessments at a fixed price, and the risk is worth stating plainly because the price makes it look like a service. A student who submits purchased work faces their school's academic honesty process and, under IB rules, a malpractice finding that can cost the whole diploma. The provider keeps the fee. The student carries the consequence for years.

Legitimate support is narrower and more useful than the alternative pretends. A tutor teaches the criteria by letter and the marks attached to each. A tutor interrogates a research question until it is answerable in the word limit. A tutor questions method, data, sources and reasoning. A tutor reads a draft and replies with questions - why this comparison, what does the graph show that the table does not, which limitation would an examiner spot first. The student then decides, in their own words.

What a tutor must not do is supply text, restructure an argument on the student's behalf, or hand back a rewritten version to retype. The test is whether the student can defend every decision in the work under questioning, without notes. If they cannot, the help went too far whoever gave it and however it was described. That standard protects the student, which is the only reason it is worth holding to when a deadline is close.

The same boundary covers the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay, the MYP Personal Project and IGCSE coursework. Ask a prospective tutor directly how they handle a draft, and listen for whether the answer involves giving the student a better version of it. A provider who describes that openly is describing a risk they are not the ones taking.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around International City

International City is organised into country-named clusters with Warsan and the Dragon Mart corridor alongside, and almost every child here is bussed outward to school. The notes below cover the communities whose children share those routes and school lists.

International City

The country clusters - China, England, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Persia, Russia, Spain - plus the Warsan edge. Dense apartment living with no large school inside the community, so every secondary student is on a bus route of twenty minutes or more.

Warsan and Dragon Mart

The commercial edge of the community, where the main road out towards Al Awir and the Al Ain road corridor begins. Traffic here is shaped by freight as much as by school times, which pushes arrivals later than distance suggests.

Al Warqa

The nearest established villa district, holding several strong Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum schools. Most of the IGCSE requests from International City concern schools in this area.

Al Qusais

North-west towards Sharjah, with a long-standing school cluster. Buses from International City into Al Qusais take longer in the afternoon than the morning, which matters when setting a session time.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

A few minutes south, with schools inside the community and more in Academic City behind it. Families moving between International City and Silicon Oasis usually keep the same school and the same tutor slot.

Mirdif

Dense villa suburb to the north with its own school cluster and several continuum schools. Mirdif routes are short in distance and slow in practice because buses work through multiple communities.

Nad Al Hamar

Villa community between International City and Festival City, feeding a spread of schools rather than one anchor. Longer bus journeys make a 17:45 start the realistic floor for secondary students.

Al Mizhar and Al Khawaneej

Lower-density villa areas further east. For families there and here alike, the drive to a tuition centre in the west of the city would cost more time than the lesson itself, which is the whole case for online delivery.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in International City

The Al Warqa, Al Qusais and Mizhar belt

Where most International City secondary students are bussed. These schools sit on different boards, which is why a tutor match starts from the entry code rather than the school name. Students we support attend schools across this cluster.

  • Our Own English High School Al Warqa
  • The Millennium School Al Qusais
  • Ambassador School Al Mizhar
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • Dubai Gem Private School

Silicon Oasis, Academic City and the creek schools

The second direction International City buses travel, covering the IB continuum and several British-curriculum schools. A few families here also travel to the Festival City and Garhoud schools along the creek.

  • GEMS Wellington Academy Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Vernus International School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Uptown School Mirdif

Schools are named here as local context for International City families only; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement by or partnership with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the last marked paper, not the report

The report shows the outcome; the script shows the cause. Send the most recent marked assessment, including the one that went badly, and we can tell whether the problem is knowledge, procedure, timing or command terms. Those four need different responses, and only some of them need a paid hour.

  2. 02

Ask the school for the code and the tier

Request the syllabus code and, for Cambridge subjects, the tier in writing from the examinations officer. It costs nothing and it changes everything: a Core entry caps the grade, and past-paper practice on the wrong tier gives a misleading picture of where the student stands.

  3. 03

One diagnostic hour, then an honest recommendation

The first session works on the marked script and a short set of unprompted questions rather than teaching. Sometimes the recommendation is a weekly slot on one subject. Sometimes it is six weeks of structured self-marked practice and no paid hours at all, and we will say so.

  4. 04

Fund one subject with a target and an end date

Where a slot is needed, we agree the subject, a stated target, a number of sessions and a review point rather than an open-ended arrangement. Everything else in the plan goes to self-marked past papers, which is free and more effective than a second paid subject.

  5. 05

Run the free half of the plan every week

Whole papers, correct tier, strict timing, closed notes, marked against the published scheme, with each lost mark logged by reason. We set it, check it and adjust it. This is the part that does most of the work, and it is the part that stops if nobody is watching.

  6. 06

    Review on marks, then stop

At the review point we compare against marked work and decide to continue, change tutor or finish. Finishing is the intended outcome. A provider with no end date is selling a standing order, and for a household budgeting carefully that is the worst product in this market.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We will tell you when not to buy an hour

Where the marked work shows a diffuse weakness rather than a specific failure, the recommendation is structured self-marked practice and no paid sessions. A provider that never gives that answer is not diagnosing, it is selling.

One subject, chosen for leverage

Algebraic fluency carries into all three sciences; marking technique and command terms carry into every written subject. A constrained budget goes furthest on something that transfers, not on the subject with the lowest grade.

The free half of the plan is set and checked

Past papers and mark schemes cost nothing and outperform extra tutoring when used properly. We specify the routine - whole paper, right tier, timed, closed notes, strict marking, losses logged by reason - and check it each week.

Tier and syllabus code checked before matching

A Core entry caps a grade and a tutor on the wrong specification teaches the wrong paper competently. We ask for the code and the tier before a match is made, which is why the first question is about the entry form rather than the report.

Rates in AED with sources and dates

Every figure here is attributed to the provider or survey that published it and dated to October 2026. Nothing on this page is presented as our price, and you can hold our quote against the same bands.

No travel premium, no centre commute

Lessons run online, so you are not paying for a drive from the villa districts and your child is not adding a second journey to the day. The choice widens from whoever can reach Warsan to whoever teaches the specification.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in International City: your questions answered

We can only afford one subject. Which one should it be?+

Choose on leverage rather than on the lowest grade. In Years 10 and 11 the usual answer is Mathematics, because algebraic fluency carries into all three sciences, so fixing it improves several subjects at once. The second filter is whether the marked script shows a specific failure - a method abandoned mid-way, a question never started - because that is what a tutor can diagnose and fix. A subject that is weak because the work has not been done needs the work, not an hour. Send the last marked paper and the answer is usually obvious from it.

Is a tutor at AED 50 an hour worth trying?+

It depends entirely on the job. At AED 50 you are generally buying homework supervision and content recap from a student or part-time tutor, which is genuinely useful for a Year 7 or Year 8 child who needs the habit of sitting down and working. Pointed at a Year 11 Extended Mathematics paper it is usually poor value, because diagnosing why a specific question failed needs someone who knows the tier, the paper structure and the mark scheme. Ask two questions before booking: which syllabus code do you teach, and do you hold the MoHRE private tuition permit.

Does IB Gram send tutors to International City apartments?+

No. IB Gram does not provide in-home tutoring anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service offered only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video with screen sharing, so the tutor and the student work on the same marked script. For a household here that removes the travel premium an in-home tutor has to charge for the drive out from the villa districts, and it widens the choice from whoever can reach Warsan on a weekday evening to whoever actually teaches your child's specification.

Which schools do children in International City attend?+

There is no large school inside the community, so every secondary student travels. The main flows are north-east into Al Warqa, Al Qusais and Al Mizhar, and south into Silicon Oasis and Academic City, with a smaller number going along the creek to the Garhoud and Festival City schools. Those destinations sit on several different boards, which is why a tutor match has to begin with the syllabus code rather than the school name. Two children in the same building can sit different Physics papers depending on whether their schools entered Cambridge or Pearson.

What is the difference between IGCSE Core and Extended, and can we change?+

They are different paper sets with different grade ranges, not two difficulty settings on one scale. A Core entry makes a narrower band of grades available, typically C to G, while an Extended entry offers the full range. A student on Core cannot reach the top grades because the papers do not award them. Tier is usually decided by the school, often in Year 10, and is recorded on the entry rather than in the report. Changing is possible before the entry deadline at the school's discretion, so raise it early in Year 10 rather than after Year 11 mocks.

My child sits English as a Second Language. Does that limit anything?+

Usually not, but check the destination rather than assume. English as a Second Language is a full, widely accepted qualification with its own papers and purpose, not a reduced version of First Language English. Some sixth-form courses and some institutions do name First Language English or require a separate proficiency test - on the American equivalency track, English is evidenced by IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and a school grade does not substitute for that. A strong grade on the right course beats a weak one on a more prestigious-sounding course.

How do we use past papers properly without paying a tutor?+

Narrowly and strictly. Whole paper, not topic by topic. The correct tier. Timed. Notes closed. Then mark against the published scheme in a different colour, to the scheme's wording rather than to your own sense of whether the answer was reasonable. Then log every lost mark under one of four reasons: did not know it, misread the question, ran out of time, or wrote the wrong structure for the command term. Retest the losses a fortnight later. Access papers through the school or the boards' official sites rather than a reseller.

Are group classes better value than one-to-one here?+

Cheaper per hour, slower per hour, and it depends on the problem. A group works reasonably for general revision where everyone needs the same content covered again. It works poorly for a specific diagnosed failure, because the tutor cannot stop and watch one student attempt thirty unprompted questions while others wait. A tuition centre class adds a second commute to an evening that probably has no room for one. For most International City budgets, one well-chosen one-to-one subject plus free past-paper work beats a group class in three subjects.

Can two children in the same flat share a session?+

Yes, when they are genuinely at the same point in the same subject on the same specification. It roughly halves the cost per child and, just as valuably, halves the number of evening slots the household has to find. It fails when children two years apart are put together to save money: the tutor ends up teaching one and occupying the other. Review it after four sessions, because mismatch becomes obvious quickly. The same arrangement works for two neighbours' children in the same class, provided both families agree the target.

How many hours a week should a Year 11 student be working alone?+

The useful measure is output rather than hours. For Year 11, two whole timed papers a fortnight across the subject set, each marked strictly against the scheme with losses logged, plus a short retrieval session on older topics most days, is a realistic and effective load. Counting hours encourages a student to sit at a desk rereading notes, which is the activity that feels most like studying and does least. If the weekly output is there, the hours take care of themselves; if it is not, more hours will not fix it.

My child does all the homework and still fails the test. Why?+

Because homework and tests measure different things. Homework usually follows the lesson, so the student knows which method applies and has it fresh. A test asks a mixed question weeks later with no indication of which method is wanted. A student can be completely reliable at the first and quite unable to do the second, and nobody has behaved badly. The fix is unprompted mixed practice: questions drawn from several topics, with no signposting, attempted cold and marked strictly. That is the half of the course the timetable does not cover.

Does a tutor charging AED 60 an hour still need a permit?+

Yes. The requirement attaches to the activity rather than the price. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The application is listed with no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since the permit costs nothing, not holding it usually means the rules were never checked.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE coursework without breaking the rules?+

Yes, inside a clear line. A tutor can teach the assessment criteria and what each is worth, question the focus of the work, interrogate method and sources, and respond to a draft with questions rather than corrections. What a tutor must not do is supply text, restructure the argument, or hand back a rewritten version to be retyped. The test is whether your child can defend every choice unaided. Purchased or ghostwritten coursework exposes the student to the school's academic honesty process and, in the IB, to a malpractice finding; the provider keeps the fee either way.

How long before marks move if we start now?+

It depends on which failure is being fixed. A procedural problem - not starting questions, misreading command terms, marking generously - often shows movement within three or four weeks, because the behaviour changes quickly once it is named. A content gap in mathematics takes longer, typically six to ten weeks of weekly work plus practice between sessions. A diffuse weakness across several subjects does not move on a schedule at all, which is why we measure against marked work rather than promise a timeline. Set the review point at six to eight weeks and judge it on scripts.

What should we send to get a tutor matched quickly?+

Four things. The syllabus code and tier from the entry form, or the IB subject and level. The last two pieces of marked work, including the one that went badly. The school's coursework deadline dates if coursework is live. And the time your child actually gets home, which sets the slot. With those the diagnostic hour is spent diagnosing rather than collecting information, and you receive a written assessment, a named tutor who teaches that specification, the rate in AED and a review date before anything is committed.

Spend the money where it changes a mark

A limited budget is not a limitation on what a student can achieve; it is a constraint on where the money goes. Fund the one subject where the marked script shows a specific, fixable failure, pick the one with the most leverage, and run the free half of the plan - whole timed papers, right tier, strict marking, losses logged - every week without exception. Send the syllabus code and tier, the last marked paper and the time your child gets home. You will get a written diagnostic, an honest recommendation that sometimes says no paid hours are needed yet, the rate in AED, and a review date. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video.
