IB Chemistry Tutor in Arabian Ranches

An IB chemistry tutor in Arabian Ranches is worth hiring for one reason: the 2023 Chemistry guide is marked to a specification, and most lost marks are specification errors rather than knowledge gaps. Significant figures. A missing state symbol. An entropy term in joules multiplied into an enthalpy term in kilojoules. A curly arrow starting in the wrong place. This page goes strand by strand through what Structure and Reactivity actually demand, names the mark-scheme traps, and sets out the past-paper method that moves them. Lessons run live over video to Arabian Ranches, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Arabian Ranches

Chemistry marks are lost to the specification, not to the chemistry

A Diploma chemistry student in Arabian Ranches who sits a past Paper 2 and scores six out of eleven on an energetics question has usually understood the energetics. What went wrong was a sign, a unit, or a step the mark scheme wanted written down and the student thought was obvious. That is the characteristic shape of chemistry underperformance at Diploma level, and it is why a chemistry tutor is a different purchase from a chemistry textbook. The textbook explains the content. The tutor shows your child how the content is marked.

The 2023 guide reorganised the course into six strands, three under Structure and three under Reactivity, and removed the option topics and Paper 3 along with them. Structure 1 covers models of the particulate nature of matter, from the nuclear atom and electron configurations to the mole and ideal gases. Structure 2 covers bonding and structure across the ionic, covalent and metallic models. Structure 3 classifies matter through the periodic table and through organic functional groups. Reactivity 1 asks what drives chemical reactions, Reactivity 2 asks how much, how fast and how far, and Reactivity 3 asks what the mechanisms of chemical change are.

That structure matters for tutoring because it decides where a weakness propagates. A student who is shaky on the mole in Structure 1.4 will lose marks in Reactivity 2.1 on amount of chemical change, in titration calculations, in percentage yield, and again in the data analysis of their own investigation. Fixing Structure 1.4 fixes four different question types. Fixing the symptom in one of them fixes nothing. A diagnosis-led tutor works out which strand the error lives in before deciding what to teach.

Arabian Ranches students reach DP Chemistry mainly through JESS Arabian Ranches, which runs the English National Curriculum to IGCSE and then the IB Diploma inside the community, or through the IB campuses a short drive out: Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City, Emirates International School Meadows, GEMS International School Al Khail in Dubai Hills Estate and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. KHDA inspects all of them annually and publishes the reports. Whichever campus your child attends, the examination is the same, the data booklet is the same, and the mark scheme is the same.

IB Gram delivers chemistry teaching live over video, one-to-one. We do not send a tutor to a villa in Arabian Ranches; home visits are an India-only service and no page on this site says otherwise. For a chemistry student the online format is not a compromise. Mechanisms are drawn on a shared screen where both people can annotate them, past-paper scripts are marked side by side with the published mark scheme open, and the spectroscopy data in the booklet is on the screen rather than in a textbook nobody brought.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry sits in a different place in each programme a Ranches family might be inside. The three routes below are the ones that lead to or away from DP Chemistry, with the content consequence of each spelled out rather than summarised.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Six strands, 150 taught hours at Standard Level and 240 at Higher. Assessment is Paper 1 at 36 per cent, split into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, Paper 2 at 44 per cent in short and extended response, and the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. Higher Level adds depth in energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry rather than adding components.

A Ranches student usually meets DP Chemistry at JESS Arabian Ranches or at one of the IB campuses reached from Al Qudra Road and Al Khail Road. The practical programme belongs to the school. What a tutor adds is specification literacy: knowing that a two-mark enthalpy answer needs a sign and a unit, and that a Le Chatelier answer needs both the direction of shift and its effect on the quantity named in the question.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Chemistry is taught inside integrated science units and assessed against four criteria out of eight each: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion C in MYP is the direct ancestor of data analysis in the Diploma investigation, which makes MYP 4 and MYP 5 the cheapest place to build the skill.

Families around the Ranches reach the MYP at Fairgreen International School, Emirates International School Meadows, GEMS International School Al Khail and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. A student arriving in DP1 from MYP already understands criterion-based marking, which is a genuine advantage over an IGCSE entrant meeting the investigation criteria for the first time.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry before the Diploma

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 runs Core and Extended tiers, with Paper 1 and Paper 3 for Core, Paper 2 and Paper 4 for Extended, and either Paper 5, the practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1 is untiered across two written papers. Neither includes entropy, electrode potentials or reaction mechanisms, which is precisely where DP1 students stall.

JESS Arabian Ranches, Jebel Ali School in DAMAC Hills, GEMS Metropole School in Motor City and South View School towards Remraam all run IGCSE chemistry. Ask the school examinations officer for the syllabus code before buying past papers, because 0620, 0654 and 4CH1 question styles differ enough that the wrong set wastes a term.

Career-related Programme with DP Chemistry

The Career-related Programme combines DP courses with a career-related study, so DP Chemistry SL can be taken inside it. The chemistry content and assessment are identical to the full Diploma version. What changes is the amount of time available each week, which changes how many hours of support make sense and when the investigation can realistically be written.

No campus inside Arabian Ranches runs the Career-related Programme, so families considering it look across Dubai. For chemistry the teaching requirement does not change at all: six strands, two papers, one investigation of 24 marks, and the same data booklet in the examination hall.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is the focus of this page. The subject notes below describe the strands and the companion subjects in terms of what each one is assessed on, because that is the information a parent needs in order to judge whether a tutor is talking about the right thing.

Chemistry HL

Higher Level, 240 hours

Paper 1 runs two hours and Paper 2 two hours thirty. The HL-only material concentrates in energy cycles, entropy and spontaneity, the extent of chemical change, proton and electron transfer, and electron-pair sharing reactions. Born-Haber cycles and the Gibbs free energy relationship account for a disproportionate share of HL marks lost.

Chemistry SL

Standard Level, 150 hours

Paper 1 and Paper 2 each run one hour thirty across the same six strands at reduced depth. SL candidates lose fewer marks to advanced content and more to presentation: unrounded answers, missing units, equations without state symbols, and explanation answers that stop one step short of the mark.

Structure 1: particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

The nuclear atom, electron configurations, counting particles by mass through the mole, and ideal gases. Everything quantitative in the course rests on 1.4. A student who cannot move confidently between mass, moles, concentration and volume will lose marks in four other strands without ever seeing the connection.

Structure 2 and 3: bonding and classification

HL and SL

Ionic, covalent and metallic models, the move from models to materials, the periodic table as classification, and organic functional groups. Explanation questions here are marked on the model invoked, so an answer that describes a property without naming the bonding responsible usually scores half of what it could.

Reactivity 1: what drives chemical reactions

HL and SL

Measuring enthalpy changes, energy cycles, energy from fuels, and at Higher Level entropy and spontaneity. The arithmetic trap is constant: enthalpy in kilojoules per mole, entropy in joules per kelvin per mole, and a Gibbs calculation that silently fails if the units are not reconciled first.

Reactivity 2: how much, how fast, how far

HL and SL

Amount of chemical change, rate of reaction, and the extent of reaction through equilibrium. Equilibrium constant expressions that wrongly include pure solids and liquids, and Le Chatelier answers that give a direction without an effect, are two of the most common repeated errors in the whole course.

Reactivity 3: mechanisms of chemical change

HL and SL

Proton transfer, electron transfer, electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactions. This is where acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry live. Curly arrows are marked on where they start and where they point, so a mechanism drawn with the right products and the wrong arrow origins scores poorly.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Useful rather than essential for chemistry. Logarithms matter for pH and pKa work, and comfort with rearranging multi-variable relationships matters for the Gibbs and equilibrium calculations. A chemistry student weak on logarithms will find Reactivity 3.1 harder than the chemistry itself warrants.

Biology HL and SL

HL and SL

The usual partner for medicine and life-science applications. Biology and chemistry share the 2023 assessment architecture exactly, so command-term technique transfers directly, and the two scientific investigations can be planned in the same DP1 term instead of colliding.

Physics HL and SL

HL and SL

The partner for engineering and physical-science routes. Physics uses the same Paper 1A and 1B structure and the same uncertainty conventions, so a student taking both only needs the data-analysis skill taught once, and the second subject then borrows it.

Extended Essay in Chemistry

Core, 4,000 words

A chemistry Extended Essay needs a research question answerable with school equipment and reagents a Dubai school can actually obtain. The school supervisor supervises it. Tutoring is confined to teaching the underlying chemistry, discussing method, and giving feedback on drafts the student has written.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all DP students

TOK consumes DP1 and DP2 time in ways that collide with the chemistry investigation deadline. A tutor can help a student reason clearly about scientific knowledge claims. A tutor does not produce the essay or the exhibition commentary, which remain the student's own work throughout.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support is bought in three shapes, and the right one depends on whether the problem is content, technique or a deadline. All IB Gram lessons run live over video; nothing in this list involves a visit.

Weekly strand repair

A fixed slot each week working through one strand at a time, in the order the errors demand rather than the order the guide lists them. Most students need Structure 1.4 and Reactivity 2.1 before anything else, because the quantitative work underneath them appears in every other strand and in their own investigation.

  • One strand per block, diagnosed from the student's own marked work
  • Shared screen with the data booklet open throughout
  • Short written summary of what moved and what did not
  • Same tutor each week so the diagnosis carries forward

Past-paper marking clinics

The student sits a paper in their own time, then the session is spent marking it against the published mark scheme line by line. This is the format that moves specification errors fastest, because the student sees the mark awarded or withheld on their own handwriting rather than hearing a general rule about significant figures.

  • Student's own script marked against the official scheme
  • Errors classified as content, technique or presentation
  • Command terms checked answer by answer
  • A running error log carried between sessions

Investigation support inside IB rules

Teaching on the chemistry behind the research question, discussion of variables and method, explanation of what each criterion rewards, and feedback on drafts the student has written. The report stays the student's work and the school supervisor remains the supervisor at every stage.

  • Criteria A to D explained with six marks each
  • Uncertainty, repeats and anomalies taught as skills
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a rewrite
  • No supplied research questions and no supplied data

Short intensive before a mock

Two or three sessions a week for a defined number of weeks aimed at specific papers. For chemistry the most productive order is Paper 1B data technique first, then the two weakest Reactivity strands, then timed Paper 2 extended responses under examination conditions.

  • Built backwards from the school's own mock dates
  • Timed Paper 2 practice with examiner-style feedback
  • Ends when the block ends, with no rolling commitment
  • Error log reviewed at the halfway point

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Arabian Ranches

01

The six strands, and which one your child is actually failing

The 2023 Chemistry guide is organised as two themes with three strands each, and the single most useful thing a parent can do is find out which strand the lost marks are in. Schools report by assessment, not by strand, so a report card showing a four in chemistry says nothing about cause. A tutor reading two marked papers can usually name the strand within one session, because the error signature of each strand is distinctive.

Structure 1 problems look like arithmetic: wrong moles, wrong concentration, an answer to five significant figures when the data supports two. Structure 2 problems look like vocabulary: a property described without the bonding model that causes it. Structure 3 problems look like misclassification, usually of an organic functional group. Reactivity 1 problems are signs and units. Reactivity 2 problems are equilibrium expressions and Le Chatelier answers that stop halfway. Reactivity 3 problems are mechanisms, half-equations and electrode potentials with reversed signs.

The table below sets out each strand with its content and its characteristic failure. Use it as a diagnostic rather than a syllabus summary. A student who recognises their own mistakes in the right-hand column of one row has found the block of teaching worth paying for, and a student who recognises them in four rows has a quantitative problem in Structure 1 rather than four separate problems.

This is also how the teaching order gets decided. Arabian Ranches families often ask for help with organic chemistry because that is the topic the school is currently teaching, and the correct answer is frequently to spend the first fortnight on the mole and on titration arithmetic instead. Organic mechanisms are hard to learn while the quantitative foundation is still shifting underneath them, and the marks recovered from Structure 1 appear in the organic questions anyway.

Paper 1, Paper 2 and what the data booklet is for

Chemistry is assessed in three components and no more. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and is sat as one session containing a multiple-choice part and a data-based part. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent in short and extended response. The scientific investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent. There is no Paper 3 and there are no options on the current guide, so a tutor or a revision guide still referring to them is working from material your child will never be examined on.

The data booklet is the component parents understand least and students waste most. It is provided in both papers and it contains the periodic table, physical constants, average bond enthalpies, standard electrode potentials and the spectroscopic data ranges for infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. A student who has not used it in practice loses time hunting for a value. A student who has used it in practice knows which page carries which table and reads a wavenumber range without thinking about it.

The practical consequence is that data booklet fluency is a trainable skill with a measurable return, and it belongs in past-paper sessions from DP1 rather than in the final month. The same is true of the command terms. Deduce, determine, explain, state and suggest demand different answers, and the mark allocation tells the student how many linked steps the examiner expects. A three-mark explain question answered in one confident sentence scores one mark, however correct the sentence is.

The table sets the components out with their durations at each level. Note that Higher Level sits longer papers rather than extra ones, and that the investigation weighting is identical at both levels. For a DP1 student in Arabian Ranches that last point is the planning fact that matters: the fifth of the grade written at home is worth exactly as much to an SL candidate as to an HL candidate.

The mark-scheme traps that cost the most marks

  • Significant figures matched to the precision of the data given
  • State symbols in every thermochemical and ionic equation
  • Signs: exothermic negative, reversed half-equation reversed
  • Units reconciled before any Gibbs free energy calculation
  • Le Chatelier answers giving direction and effect, not direction alone
  • Curly arrows starting at a bond or a lone pair, never at an atom

Six errors account for most of the preventable loss in Diploma chemistry, and all six are presentation rather than understanding. Significant figures come first. An answer is expected to the precision the data supports, and a student who writes out the full calculator display loses the mark on an otherwise perfect calculation. The fix takes one session and holds for two years, which makes it the best value in the entire course.

State symbols come second, and they bite hardest in thermochemistry, where an enthalpy of solution or combustion written without the physical states is incomplete. Signs come third: exothermic enthalpy changes are negative, and the sign on a reversed half-equation reverses with it. Units come fourth, and the recurring disaster is the Gibbs free energy calculation, where an enthalpy term in kilojoules per mole meets an entropy term in joules per kelvin per mole and the student multiplies without converting.

Equilibrium language is fifth. A question that asks for the effect of increased pressure wants the direction of shift and what happens to the quantity named in the question, and an answer giving only the direction scores half. Pure solids and liquids do not appear in the equilibrium constant expression, and they appear in student answers constantly. Mechanisms are sixth. A curly arrow is marked on where it begins and where it points, so an arrow drawn from an atom rather than from a bond or a lone pair loses the mark even when the product is right.

None of this is taught by re-explaining the chemistry, which is why a tutor who only lectures will not move these marks. It is taught by marking the student's own script against the published scheme, naming each loss, and logging it. Most Ranches students who do this consistently for six weeks stop making four of the six errors entirely, and the remaining two become visible enough to catch in the examination hall.

04

Organic chemistry: the mechanisms and how they are actually marked

  • Substitution pathway chosen from substrate class, justified by stability
  • Intermediates drawn with charges in the correct position
  • Electrophilic addition and elimination mechanisms drilled as a finite set
  • Spectroscopy worked in a fixed order: functional group, environments, mass
  • Data booklet ranges used from practice rather than memorised

Organic chemistry sits in Structure 3.2 for classification and in Reactivity 3.3 and 3.4 for mechanism, and it is the part of the course where Ranches students most often ask for help. The content is finite and learnable. The marking is unforgiving in a specific way: the examiner is looking at the arrows, the intermediates and the charges, not only at the product. A student who can predict the product of every reaction in the syllabus and cannot draw the arrows will score poorly on the mechanism questions and well on everything else.

Nucleophilic substitution is the clearest example. The choice between the two pathways is decided by the substrate class, with tertiary halogenoalkanes going through a carbocation and primary ones through a single concerted step, and the explanation marks come from the stability argument rather than from the label. Electrophilic addition to alkenes needs the intermediate drawn with its charge in the right place. Elimination, condensation and the reactions of carboxylic acids and their derivatives each have a small number of examinable mechanisms, and the set is small enough to drill properly.

Spectroscopy is the other half of the organic marks and the half most often neglected. Mass spectrometry fragments, infrared absorption ranges and proton nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts are all in the data booklet, and the question is almost always the same shape: identify the compound from three pieces of evidence. The technique is to narrow by functional group from the infrared data, count environments from the nuclear magnetic resonance integration and splitting, then confirm the molecular mass. Students who learn that order stop guessing.

An online session is a good place for this work because the structures can be drawn and annotated on a shared screen in a way a textbook diagram cannot be. The student draws the mechanism, the tutor marks the arrows in a second colour, and the error is visible rather than described. Over a six-week block most students move from drawing mechanisms from memory to constructing them from the substrate, which is the shift the examination rewards.

05

Past-paper work that actually changes a chemistry grade

  • Timed, closed-book sitting before any marking takes place
  • Student marks their own script against the official scheme first
  • Tutor classifies every loss as content, technique or presentation
  • Current-guide material used for Paper 1B question style
  • No papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents hosted or supplied by us

Most students do past papers badly, and doing them badly is worse than not doing them, because it builds confidence on top of an unfixed error. The pattern that works has four steps and a tutor is useful at two of them. The student sits the paper under timed conditions without notes. The student marks it against the published scheme without mercy. The tutor reviews the marked script and classifies every loss as content, technique or presentation. The next block of teaching attacks the largest category.

Classification is the step that students cannot do alone, because a loss that feels like not knowing the chemistry is frequently a presentation error wearing a disguise. A student who wrote the right idea in two steps for a three-mark question did not fail to know the chemistry. A student who used the right method and lost the final mark to significant figures did not fail either. Separating those cases changes what the next month is spent on, and it is the single highest-value thing a chemistry tutor does.

The second place a tutor earns the fee is in choosing which papers to sit. Past material from the previous guide still contains useful questions on bonding, periodicity and organic chemistry, and is misleading on entropy, options and the removed Paper 3. Specimen and released material for the current guide is the only reliable source of question style for Paper 1B. A student working through a decade of old papers in syllabus order is spending real hours on components that no longer exist.

Reproduction is the boundary worth stating plainly. IB Gram does not host, copy or supply syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables. Those belong to the IB and to the examination boards, and the legitimate route is the school, the official store or the board's own site. A tutor works from material the student or the school already holds legally, and a provider offering a downloadable archive of papers is offering something it is not entitled to give away.

06

The scientific investigation: 24 marks, four criteria, 3,000 words

The investigation is 20 per cent of the chemistry grade and it is assessed against four criteria worth six marks each. Research design covers the research question, the methodology and the handling of variables. Data analysis covers processing, uncertainty and presentation. Conclusion covers the interpretation against the research question and the comparison with accepted values. Evaluation covers the strengths, the limitations and realistic improvements. Twenty-four marks, with a report limit of 3,000 words.

Most lost marks sit in two places. The research question is too broad, so no amount of good data can answer it, and the evaluation is generic, listing human error and equipment accuracy rather than naming the specific limitation that affected this experiment. Both are preventable at the planning stage and almost impossible to repair once the data is collected, which is why the useful time to talk to a tutor about an investigation is before the laboratory work rather than after it.

The boundary on what a tutor may do is strict and it protects your child. Teaching is permitted: what a controlled variable is, why the examiner wants it justified, how to propagate an uncertainty, whether a relationship should be linearised, what a high-scoring evaluation contains. Feedback on a draft the student has written is permitted, and it is exactly what a school supervisor also gives. Writing, rewriting, editing to completion, handing over a research question to be adopted wholesale, or supplying data are not permitted, and IB Gram does not do them.

Providers in this market sell completed Internal Assessments outright, with a price list. Treat that as a warning rather than an option: the malpractice consequence falls on the student, not on the seller, and it can end a Diploma. The same boundary applies to the Extended Essay and to the Theory of Knowledge essay. Your child's school supervisor stays in charge of the investigation throughout, and a tutor who suggests otherwise has told you something important about themselves.

From Cambridge 0620 to DP Chemistry: the measurable gap

A Ranches student arriving in DP1 from Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 or Pearson Edexcel 4CH1 meets five genuinely new things, and knowing which five turns a vague feeling of difficulty into a work plan. Entropy and spontaneity are new. Standard electrode potentials and quantitative electrochemistry are new. Reaction mechanisms with curly arrows are new. Spectroscopic identification is new. And the expectation that an explanation is constructed in linked steps, each worth a mark, is new in kind rather than in degree.

What is not new is most of the content. Bonding, periodicity, acids and bases, rates, equilibrium qualitatively, and organic functional groups all appear at IGCSE in recognisable form. The Diploma asks for the same ideas at greater depth and with quantitative treatment attached. That is why a student who was comfortable at IGCSE can be uncomfortable in DP1 without having forgotten anything: the questions have changed shape rather than subject.

The transition map below lists the gaps with an honest estimate of how much support each usually needs. Those estimates come from the pattern of enquiries rather than from a study, so treat them as planning figures and not as promises. A student who closes the quantitative gap in Structure 1 early tends to need less help with everything after it, which is the single most useful thing a Year 11 Ranches family can act on during the summer before DP1.

The double-award routes deserve a separate note. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 and Pearson Edexcel Double Award Science 4SD0 cover less chemistry than the separate syllabuses, so the gap into DP Chemistry from a double award is wider, especially in organic chemistry and in quantitative work. A student moving from 0654 into Chemistry HL should assume a term of catching up and should plan for it in Year 11 rather than discovering it in October.

What chemistry tuition costs for an Arabian Ranches family

Think in monthly terms first, because that is how a tuition decision is actually made inside a household budget. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 research puts the monthly cost of a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 for budget provision, AED 600 to 1,200 for mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those figures are the publishers' own.

Converted to an hourly view the same research puts qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 with independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, TutorChase lists AED 270, and BartyED's examiner-led tier sits at AED 650. At the budget end EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 an hour online.

Two conclusions follow for a chemistry family. The first is that the specialist premium is modest in monthly terms and large in effect: the difference between a generalist and a chemistry specialist is a few hundred dirhams a month, and it decides whether anyone in the room understands why a curly arrow lost a mark. The second is that frequency costs more than quality. Going from one session a week to three triples the bill; going from a generalist to a specialist does not.

Set that against school fees for context. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Dubai's private sector carried 387,441 pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula. Tutoring is the part of the education budget that still moves year to year, which is why a family should decide what it is buying before deciding how much of it to buy. IB Gram does not publish a rate card here; the free trial and a short conversation establish the plan first.

Honesty, permits and what IB Gram is not

  • Ask any tutor whether they hold a current MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you
  • KHDA regulates schools, not individual tutors
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and claims none
  • No UAE office, centre or branch, and no overseas contact number

Private tutoring in the UAE is legal and regulated. The route for an individual is a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. MoHRE's service is listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the smart app, website or e-services system.

Tutoring without that permit exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of fines has been published, so any specific amount quoted at a parent should be treated with suspicion. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct works the same way. A chemistry teacher offering to tutor their own class privately is not a convenience; it is a problem for both of you.

On regulators, the position is worth stating precisely because competitors blur it. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge does so in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or endorsed by any of them, nor by the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims no partnership with any school or school group.

There is also no IB Gram office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE, and no phone number outside the region is used as the route to reach us. A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai would require a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific authorisation with an initial approval stage, a six-month window to complete the licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. We do not hold it, so we do not describe ourselves as though we did.

Where we tutor

Where Ranches-belt chemistry students actually study

These notes describe each community by its chemistry provision rather than by its commute: which campus the children attend, which board they sit at 16, and what that means for the step into DP Chemistry.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches sits inside the community and runs IGCSE before the IB Diploma, so a Ranches student typically arrives at DP Chemistry from Cambridge or Edexcel International GCSE rather than from the MYP. That makes the investigation criteria the newest thing they meet in DP1.

Arabian Ranches 2

Ranches Primary School serves the early years inside the community; older children travel out to JESS or to the IB campuses. Chemistry enquiries from here cluster in Year 11 and DP1, at the point where the IGCSE content runs out and the Diploma depth begins.

Arabian Ranches 3

The newest phase, handing over through 2026, with no secondary campus of its own. Diploma students commute towards Fairgreen International School, GEMS International School Al Khail or back into Arabian Ranches, which means a single street can contain three different chemistry syllabuses.

Mudon

Close to The Sustainable City, so Fairgreen International School is the natural IB destination. Mudon students are more likely than their Ranches neighbours to arrive at DP Chemistry from the MYP, and they tend to find criterion-based marking familiar and the quantitative depth unfamiliar.

Motor City

GEMS Metropole School takes the British route to A Level, so Motor City students choosing DP Chemistry are usually at a different campus. The practical consequence is a longer school day and a later realistic start for a weekday chemistry session.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School covers the early years; secondary students head out towards Al Barsha South or Dubai Hills Estate. Chemistry requests from Sports City are split fairly evenly between IGCSE Extended tier work and DP1 catch-up.

DAMAC Hills

Jebel Ali School runs to Year 13 on the British curriculum with A Levels, so a DAMAC Hills family wanting DP Chemistry is commuting. Students who switch from an A Level chemistry start into DP Chemistry need the practical endorsement work translated into investigation criteria.

Dubai Hills Estate

GEMS International School Al Khail brings a full IB continuum into the belt, and it is the closest alternative to JESS for a Diploma. Students here usually arrive at DP Chemistry from MYP sciences, with criterion C already familiar from their own school reports.

Town Square

A large community further along Al Qudra Road with primary provision inside it. Chemistry enquiries here tend to come later in DP1, once the first energetics and equilibrium assessments have come back and the gap has become visible on paper.

Remraam

South View School runs the British curriculum on this side of the belt. Remraam DP Chemistry students travel the furthest of anyone in the comparison set, which is why evening sessions here are scheduled after six rather than before five.

  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • GEMS International School Al Khail, Dubai Hills Estate

These schools are named as local context so a parent can place their own child's campus and syllabus. No affiliation, endorsement, client relationship or partnership with any school or school group is implied, and current inspection bands should be read from the KHDA report rather than taken from this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send two marked chemistry scripts

The fastest diagnosis comes from your child's own marked work rather than from a description of the problem. Two papers with the marks on them tell a specialist which strand the losses sit in, and whether they are content, technique or presentation errors. A school report grade alone tells almost nothing useful.

  2. 02

We match a chemistry specialist to the level and the strand

Matching is on the 2023 guide, the level your child sits, and the strands showing the losses. If nobody suitable is free in the slot you want, we say so and offer a different time or start date rather than putting a general science tutor in front of a Chemistry HL student.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One full session before anything is paid, run as a real lesson on a real problem. The tutor reports back on what they found in your child's technique. If the match is wrong, say so and we try a different tutor. Nothing is owed either way and no card details are needed to start.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and start an error log

The weekly slot is set in Gulf Standard Time around the school run from your community. From the first session the tutor keeps a running log of error types, which is what makes the fourth week more useful than the first and what tells you whether to continue.

  5. 05

    Review at the halfway point

A short written note on which strands have moved, which have not, and what the next block should attack. Families use this to change frequency, add a second science, or stop. Stopping because the problem is solved is a legitimate outcome and we will say so when we think it has been reached.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught against the current guide, not the previous one

The 2023 Chemistry guide removed the options and Paper 3 and reorganised the content into six strands. A tutor still teaching to the old shape will build a revision plan containing a component your child will never sit. Every session here works from the structure that is actually examined.

Marking, not lecturing

Specification errors are fixed by marking a student's own script against the published scheme and naming each loss, not by re-explaining the chemistry more slowly. That is the format most of our chemistry blocks use, because it is what moves significant figures, state symbols and command-term structure.

Mechanisms drawn where both people can annotate them

Organic marks turn on where a curly arrow starts and where it points. On a shared screen the student draws the mechanism and the tutor marks the arrows in a second colour, so the error is visible rather than described. A textbook diagram cannot do that.

AED figures attributed to whoever published them

Every rate on this page carries the name of the company or research service that charges it. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which is not a currency a Dubai family transacts in.

A stated boundary on the investigation

A fifth of the chemistry grade is written at home, and the line between teaching and malpractice is where families get hurt. We set that line out in writing on the page rather than leaving it vague, because the consequence of crossing it falls on the student.

No claimed status and no supplied papers

IB Gram is not approved or accredited by KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and does not host or distribute past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents. Both of those restraints are deliberate and both are checkable.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches: your questions answered

What does the 2023 IB Chemistry syllabus cover at HL that SL leaves out?+

Higher Level runs to 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the extra material concentrates in five places: energy cycles and Born-Haber treatment, entropy and spontaneity through Gibbs free energy, quantitative equilibrium, standard electrode potentials and cell calculations, and additional depth in organic mechanisms and spectroscopy. The assessment components are identical in kind; Higher Level simply sits longer papers. For a Ranches student the practical test of readiness for HL is not interest in chemistry but comfort with algebraic rearrangement and with logarithms.

How are marks split between Paper 1, Paper 2 and the investigation in IB Chemistry?+

Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and is sat as a single session containing a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent in short and extended response. The scientific investigation carries 20 per cent and is written over roughly ten hours of class time, to a limit of 3,000 words. There is no Paper 3 on the current guide and there are no option topics. Paper 2 is therefore the largest single component, and the investigation is the only part written outside an examination hall.

Why do strong students still lose marks on IB Chemistry Paper 1B data questions?+

Because Paper 1B tests the tools and inquiry skills that are taught across the course rather than in a unit of their own, so they are rarely drilled. The recurring losses are percentage uncertainty, combining uncertainties through a multiplication, obtaining an uncertainty on a gradient from maximum and minimum lines, and judging whether a stated conclusion is actually supported by the data. A student who is strong on content frequently has never practised any of it against a mark scheme. It is the most improvable component in the course.

Which organic mechanisms come up most often in IB Chemistry HL papers?+

Nucleophilic substitution in both pathways, electrophilic addition to alkenes, elimination, and the reactions of carboxylic acids and their derivatives including condensation. The examinable set is small enough to drill properly in a few weeks. The marks sit on the arrows and the intermediates rather than on the product: an arrow must start at a bond or a lone pair, an intermediate must carry its charge in the right place, and the choice of pathway must be justified by substrate class and carbocation stability rather than asserted.

How many marks does each criterion of the IB Chemistry investigation carry?+

Six each, across four criteria, giving 24 marks in total for 20 per cent of the grade. Research design covers the research question, methodology and variables. Data analysis covers processing, uncertainty and presentation. Conclusion covers interpretation against the research question and comparison with accepted values. Evaluation covers strengths, limitations and realistic improvements. The report limit is 3,000 words. Most lost marks sit in criterion A, where the research question is too broad, and criterion D, where the evaluation is generic rather than specific to this experiment.

Can my child practise chemistry past papers properly over a video lesson?+

Yes, and for marking clinics the online format is better than sitting side by side. The student sits the paper in their own time, uploads the script, and the session is spent marking it against the published scheme with both people looking at the same screen. Errors are classified as content, technique or presentation and logged. Mechanisms are drawn by the student and annotated by the tutor in a second colour. The one thing that cannot happen online is the laboratory work, which belongs to the school in any case.

What is the chemistry data booklet allowed to do for my child in an exam?+

It is provided in both written papers and it carries the periodic table, physical constants, average bond enthalpies, standard electrode potentials and the spectroscopic data ranges for infrared, mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. It does not carry worked methods or definitions. The value of practising with it is speed: a student who knows which page holds which table reads a wavenumber range without breaking concentration, while a student meeting it for the first time in the hall loses minutes they cannot recover.

How much does one-to-one IB Chemistry tuition cost for an Arabian Ranches family?+

Published market figures put IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 an hour and above, according to Bestimate's 2026 Dubai research, with TutorChase listing AED 270, Unitors quoting IB from AED 200, and BartyED's examiner tier at AED 650. Qualified online subject tutors sit at AED 150 to 300. In monthly terms the same research estimates AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support at one session a week. Those are other companies' published rates. IB Gram does not post a rate card here; the trial lesson comes first.

Is IB Chemistry HL necessary for medicine applications from Dubai?+

Frequently yes, but the requirement belongs to the university rather than to the IB, and it varies. Many medical schools in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Gulf expect Chemistry at Higher Level, often with Biology, and some specify a minimum grade in each. The only reliable method is to read the entry requirements for each named university your child is considering, then work backwards into Year 12 subject choices. No tutoring provider can tell you what a given admissions office will require, and any that claims to should be read carefully.

How many chemistry sessions a week does a DP2 student usually need?+

One weekly session is the common pattern for a student who is broadly on track and losing marks to technique. Two becomes sensible where a whole strand is missing, typically entropy or electrochemistry, because new content needs teaching and then consolidating. Three is an intensive arrangement that makes sense for a defined block before mock examinations rather than as a standing commitment. Frequency is the expensive variable in a tuition budget, so it is worth being honest about whether the problem is coverage or technique before buying more hours.

What goes wrong when a student moves from IGCSE Chemistry 0620 into DP Chemistry?+

Five things are genuinely new: entropy and spontaneity, standard electrode potentials and quantitative electrochemistry, reaction mechanisms with curly arrows, spectroscopic identification, and the expectation that explanations are built in linked steps worth a mark each. Most of the remaining content is familiar at greater depth. Students from the double-award routes, Cambridge 0654 or Edexcel 4SD0, face a wider gap than students from 0620 or 4CH1, particularly in organic chemistry and quantitative work, and should plan for it during Year 11.

Does my child need equipment at home for chemistry practical work?+

No. The practical programme, the laboratory, the equipment for the scientific investigation and the supervision of experiments all belong to the school, whether that is JESS Arabian Ranches, Fairgreen International School or GEMS International School Al Khail. An online tutor works on theory, data handling, question technique and the written report. No apparatus is needed at home, and a tutor who offers to supply experimental data for an investigation is offering something that would put your child's Diploma at risk.

Will a chemistry tutor mark my child's investigation draft for them?+

A tutor can read a draft your child has written and give feedback on it, which is the same thing a school supervisor does. That includes pointing out that a conclusion is not supported by the data, that an evaluation is generic, or that the uncertainty treatment is incomplete. What a tutor must not do is write, rewrite or edit the report to completion, supply the research question to be adopted, or provide data. IB Gram works only on the feedback side of that line, and the school supervisor remains the supervisor.

Which Arabian Ranches schools teach IB Chemistry rather than A Level Chemistry?+

JESS Arabian Ranches runs the IB Diploma after IGCSE, inside the community. Nearby, Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City, Emirates International School Meadows, GEMS International School Al Khail in Dubai Hills Estate and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills all offer the Diploma. Jebel Ali School in DAMAC Hills and GEMS Metropole School in Motor City follow the British route to A Level instead. Check the current KHDA inspection report for any campus you are considering rather than relying on a summary on a tutoring page.

Should a Year 11 Ranches student start chemistry support before DP1 begins?+

Often yes, and it is the cheapest intervention available. The summer between Year 11 and DP1 is the right window to make quantitative work in Structure 1 automatic: moving between mass, moles, concentration and volume quickly and precisely, and getting significant figures right by habit. That foundation appears in every later strand and in the investigation. Two or three sessions in August do more for a Diploma chemistry grade than the same hours bought in a panic the following March, and they cost the same.

Send two marked papers and we will tell you which strand to fix

If your child sits IB Chemistry at a campus in or near Arabian Ranches, the useful first step is not a general conversation about chemistry. Send two recent marked papers, say whether it is Higher or Standard Level, and name the next deadline, and a chemistry specialist will tell you which of the six strands the lost marks live in and whether they are content, technique or presentation errors. Then take the free trial lesson and see whether the match works. Lessons run live over video for every UAE family, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time, at a slot built around your community's school run. If the tutor is wrong for your child, say so and we will try another.
