IB Physics Tutor in Dubai Production City

An IB physics tutor in Dubai Production City is most useful when the work is sequenced against the two-year Diploma calendar rather than against whatever topic is causing trouble this week. The scientific investigation, the uncertainty work, the explain-question technique and the paper practice each have a month in which they pay best. IB Gram teaches Production City students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Physics specialists only, at the level the student is actually taking
  • Investigation support sequenced to the school's own internal deadlines
  • Uncertainty and error treatment taught as a separate skill

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Production City

Physics is a two-year subject, and the calendar decides what works when

Most families arrive at physics tutoring in a particular week, after a particular test, wanting the topic from that test fixed. That is almost always the wrong first move. IB Physics is assessed by two written papers plus a scientific investigation worth roughly twenty per cent, and the investigation is completed during the course. Which means that at any given point in the two years, there is a highest-value thing to be working on, and it is frequently not the topic that produced the bad mark.

In DP1, the highest-value work is the investigation and the uncertainty skills it requires. A research question agreed in the second half of DP1 that cannot produce enough measurable variation caps a fifth of the grade before revision begins, and no paper practice in the spring of DP2 recovers it. Uncertainty treatment, meanwhile, is examined on the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and assessed inside the investigation, so it pays twice.

In the autumn of DP2, the highest-value work is explain-question structure and the first serious timed papers. By the spring of DP2 the internal component is banked and the only remaining variable is the written papers, so the work narrows to timed questions on identified weak themes. Doing that narrowing in October rather than in March is what separates a plan from a reaction.

Dubai Production City has no IB World School inside it. Students travel to Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, to the Al Barsha ring, or to Fairgreen International School to the south. The bus day is long, which compresses the evening and makes short frequent physics sessions a better investment than long weekend blocks, particularly for the kind of work that needs concentration rather than stamina.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run in India only. For physics the online format carries a real advantage: graph work, error bars and gradient calculations are done on a shared whiteboard and saved, so a student working on the data-analysis section in April is reading their own corrected working from November.

We do not publish IB session or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated verification and a date a parent plans around has to be correct. UAE IB schools sit the May session; confirm exact windows with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. What this page sets out instead is the sequence and the lead times, which do not move, and the component structures published in the subject guide your child's school already holds. Reviewed October 2026, and every figure on it is attributed to the source it came from.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter for physics in this cluster. The MYP-to-DP step and the IGCSE-to-DP step produce different gaps, and treating them the same way is the most common planning error we see.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

The current syllabus organises content into themes with Higher Level extensions, covering space time and motion, the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics. Assessment is Paper 1, with multiple-choice and data-analysis sections, Paper 2 extended response, and the scientific investigation at roughly twenty per cent.

Production City students commute to campuses that set their own internal deadlines for the investigation, typically clustering it in the autumn and winter of DP2 after data collection late in DP1. Ask for the school's internal deadline calendar at the first parents' evening of DP1, because that document, not the IB's, is what governs the student's year.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences

MYP Sciences is assessed against four criteria scored one to eight: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criteria B and C are direct preparation for the Diploma investigation, and students who take them seriously arrive in DP1 already able to frame a research question.

An MYP entrant typically arrives in DP1 well prepared for the investigation and poorly prepared for timed papers, because the MYP has no external examination. The final MYP term is the right place to introduce timed questions, command-term reading and the habit of naming a physical principle rather than describing an outcome.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Physics entry route

Students entering DP1 from Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1 arrive with solid procedural physics and timed-paper experience, and with almost no experience of open-ended investigation. They can rearrange equations and recall definitions; they have rarely designed an experiment, chosen a measurement range or propagated an uncertainty.

Al Furjan and Jebel Ali send more IGCSE entrants into the Diploma than Dubai Investments Park does. For those students the first term of DP1 should prioritise experimental design and uncertainty, not content, because the content advantage they already hold will carry them for a term while the investigation will not wait.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The physics themes that generate the most requests in this cluster, with the specific place marks go missing. These notes come from marking scripts rather than from a syllabus summary.

Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, momentum and circular motion. Marks go missing in sign conventions and in free-body diagrams drawn without labelled forces. A student who assigns down as positive in one part of a question and negative in the next loses marks their physics had already earned.

Energy and work

HL and SL

Work, power, efficiency and energy transfers. The recurring failure is an energy argument stated without identifying the system boundary, so the examiner cannot see which transfers are being counted. Naming the system first turns a vague answer into a scoring one.

Electricity and circuits

HL and SL

Potential difference, resistance, internal resistance and circuit analysis. The reliable trap is a potential divider treated as a series circuit without accounting for the load. Students also lose marks explaining a change in brightness without naming the quantity that changed.

Fields: gravitational and electric

HL and SL

Field strength, potential, and potential energy, plus orbital motion. The distinction between field strength and potential is the single most commonly muddled pair in the course, and the mark scheme is unforgiving about it because the units give the answer away.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Superposition, interference, diffraction, standing waves and the Doppler effect. Standing wave questions are lost on diagrams: nodes and antinodes unlabelled, or a harmonic drawn with the wrong number of half-wavelengths for the stated boundary conditions.

Thermal and particulate physics

HL and SL

Specific heat capacity, latent heat, the gas laws and kinetic theory. Students manage the calculations and lose marks on kinetic-theory explanations, where the mark scheme wants molecular behaviour named rather than a macroscopic restatement of the observation.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, mass defect and the photoelectric effect. Binding energy per nucleon questions are lost on arithmetic with unit conversion between atomic mass units and joules, which is mechanical and worth drilling until it is automatic.

Uncertainty and data analysis

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation, error bars and gradient uncertainty from a best and worst line of fit. Examined on the Paper 1 data-analysis section and assessed inside the investigation, which makes it the highest-value single skill in the course.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

A single internally assessed piece worth roughly twenty per cent, assessed across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design constrains every criterion that follows, which is why the question matters more than the write-up.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, mapped to where in the two years the student is. Starting with the wrong one is the most expensive error available in this subject.

DP1: investigation and uncertainty

Weekly sessions through DP1 weighted towards experimental design, measurement and uncertainty rather than content. The research question gets interrogated before data collection, because a question that cannot produce enough variation makes every later criterion hard to satisfy. Uncertainty work done here pays again on the Paper 1 data-analysis section in DP2.

  • Research question tested for measurable variation before data collection
  • Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty taught as one system
  • Error bars and gradient uncertainty from best and worst lines of fit
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts against the published criteria

DP2 autumn: technique and first timed papers

Two sessions a week through the autumn term of DP2, one on explain-question structure and command terms, one on timed questions marked against the published mark scheme. This is the period when a student who knows the physics learns to show it, and it is where most recoverable marks in the subject sit.

  • Explain questions drilled: name the principle, then apply it
  • Timed questions marked point by point, not against a model answer
  • Error log categorised by theme, command term and pacing
  • Data-analysis section practised separately from multiple choice

DP2 spring: narrow paper block

A short block focused on two or three themes identified from the mock script, with the internal component already banked. By this stage new content teaching has limited returns and timed practice on identified weaknesses has high ones, so the sessions are deliberately repetitive and the plan is chosen from evidence rather than from a syllabus checklist.

  • Two or three target themes only, taken from the mock script
  • Timed questions every session, with the error log reviewed each time
  • Unit conversion and arithmetic drilled where it is costing marks
  • Fixed end date at the session, with nothing renewing afterwards

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Production City

01

Two years of physics, counted backwards from the May session

UAE IB schools sit the May session, and almost every deadline that actually governs a physics student's two years is set by the school rather than by the IB. The investigation has an internal submission date. Data collection has a window before that. Mocks are internal. The student's year is shaped by a calendar their coordinator publishes, and most families never ask for it.

Counting backwards makes the priorities obvious. The written papers come last and need timed practice in the final two terms. The internal component comes earlier and needs design work in DP1 and writing in the autumn of DP2. Uncertainty skills sit underneath both and therefore belong at the very start, because they are the only thing in the course that is assessed twice.

What goes wrong is almost always sequencing. A family starts tutoring in the spring of DP2 because a mock went badly, and discovers that the twenty per cent held by the investigation is already fixed, that the uncertainty work needed for the data-analysis section was never built, and that the remaining weeks can only address the written papers. The hours still help. They help less than the same hours spent eighteen months earlier.

Ask the IB coordinator for the internal deadline calendar at the first parents' evening of DP1 and keep it visible. We build the plan around it, and we re-check every four to six weeks because those dates move more often than families expect.

Uncertainty, the one skill that pays twice

  • Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty taught as one system, not three rules
  • Propagation: add absolutes for sums and differences, fractionals for products and quotients
  • Error bars plotted from absolute uncertainties, in both directions where relevant
  • Gradient uncertainty needs a worst-fit line, not just a best-fit one
  • Significant figures in a result are limited by the precision of the measurements

If a Production City family can only buy a handful of physics hours across two years, they should spend them on uncertainty. It is the only part of the course examined in the written papers and assessed inside the internal component, and it is the part schools have least time to teach properly because it sits across topics rather than inside one.

The content is finite and learnable. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, and how each is written. Propagation through sums, differences, products, quotients and powers. Error bars plotted from absolute uncertainties. Gradient uncertainty taken from best and worst lines of fit through those error bars. Deciding how many significant figures a result can honestly carry given the precision of the measurements.

Marks go missing in predictable places. A student quotes a result to four significant figures from measurements good to two. A student propagates uncertainty through a sum by multiplying fractional uncertainties. A student draws error bars and then takes the gradient of the best fit line only, with no worst line and therefore no gradient uncertainty at all. Each of those is a handful of marks on the data-analysis section and a criterion-level problem in the investigation.

Taught as one system rather than as scattered rules, it takes three or four focused sessions. Taught topic by topic as it comes up, it never quite settles, which is why so many students arrive in DP2 able to do the physics and unable to say how well they know it.

03

Explain questions, and the gap between knowing and scoring

  • Name the quantity that changes, then the relationship, then the direction, then the effect
  • Describing an outcome scores nothing on an explain question, however correct it is
  • A two-mark state question wants one line, not a paragraph
  • Time should be allocated by mark value, not by how interesting the question is
  • Command-term definitions are published in the subject guide the school holds

The most common pattern in a physics script from this cluster is a student who clearly understands what happens and scores two marks out of four for saying so. The reason is almost always that they described the outcome instead of naming the principle, and the mark scheme awards the principle.

A question asking why the brightness of a lamp changes when a second lamp is added in parallel wants the total resistance, the consequence for current drawn from the supply, the effect of internal resistance on terminal potential difference, and then the brightness. A student who writes that the lamp gets dimmer because more current goes elsewhere has described the result and named nothing, and the mark scheme has no line to award.

The structure that fixes it is mechanical. Name the physical quantity that changes. Name the relationship that connects it to the next quantity. State the direction of the change. Then state the observable consequence. Four steps, in that order, and the answer usually earns every available mark without being longer than what the student was writing before.

The same discipline applies to command terms generally. State wants a fact. Describe wants an account. Explain wants a mechanism. Discuss wants balance. Outline wants brevity. A student writing a paragraph for a two-mark state question is not being thorough; they are spending four minutes on two marks and will run out of time on Paper 2. Allocating roughly a minute per mark, and glancing at the mark value before starting, is a habit worth more than any extra content revision in the final term.

04

The investigation, criterion by criterion and deadline by deadline

  • Research design constrains data analysis, conclusion and evaluation
  • Test the question against the apparatus before the data window opens
  • Enough repeats to justify an uncertainty, not just enough to plot a line
  • Evaluation needs stated limitations and realistic improvements, not apologies
  • We teach criteria and review the student's drafts; we never write the work

The scientific investigation is a single piece of internally assessed work worth roughly twenty per cent, assessed across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Almost no competitor page in this market names a single criterion, which is strange, because the criteria are the entire instruction and they sit in the subject guide every school holds.

Research design decides the rest. A question that cannot produce enough measurable variation across a sensible range leaves the student with a flat dataset, which makes the data-analysis criterion hard and the conclusion criterion nearly impossible. Students choose questions they find interesting rather than questions their apparatus can answer, and the marks follow the apparatus.

The deadline structure matters as much as the criteria. Design has to be settled before the data collection window opens, because the window is finite and shared with a class. Data collection has to finish before the write-up period, with enough repeats to justify an uncertainty. Writing has to finish before the school's internal submission date, which is typically in the autumn or winter of DP2 and is not negotiable.

Our role is bounded and stated plainly. We teach what each criterion asks for, interrogate the research question before time is spent on it, discuss whether the method will produce usable data, and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. We do not write, rewrite or complete any part of an investigation. One operator in our research sells completed internal assessments; buying one is a malpractice risk carried by the student.

05

Reading a physics mock at component level

A mock grade in physics is almost uninformative, because the grade blends three completely different failure modes. The script separates them, and the school will provide component marks on request. Ask for them before deciding what to buy.

Pattern one is theme-specific content gaps, visible as clusters of blank or abandoned questions in particular areas. Fields and quantum physics are the usual candidates, because they arrive late and abstractly. This needs teaching, in dependency order, and it takes weeks rather than days.

Pattern two is explain-question structure, visible as attempted questions marked at half the available credit across the whole paper. This is the fastest thing to fix and the largest single pool of recoverable marks in most scripts. Three or four sessions of deliberate structure work changes it measurably.

Pattern three is the data-analysis section, which is diagnostic on its own. A student who scores well on multiple choice and poorly on data analysis has an uncertainty problem rather than a physics problem, and treating it as a physics problem wastes a term. The three patterns need different work, different numbers of hours and different tutors' attention, and the only way to tell them apart is the script.

Two smaller patterns are worth naming because they are cheap to fix and often dismissed as carelessness. A script with repeated arithmetic slips involving unit conversion, particularly between atomic mass units and joules or between millimetres and metres, needs an hour or two of drilling rather than any physics teaching at all. And a script that is strong at the start and thin at the end is a pacing problem, solved by allocating time against mark value under timed conditions. Neither is a knowledge failure, and treating either as one wastes weeks that the student does not have in the spring of DP2.

What two years of physics support costs in Dubai

Think across the two years rather than per hour, because that is how the decision actually plays out. A weekly session through DP1 and DP2 is roughly sixty to seventy hours. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions put specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000-2,000 or more a month, with mid-tier at AED 600-1,200.

By the hour, the Dubai bands read as follows, all taken from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 rate table in October 2026. Budget or university-student tutors at AED 45-150, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. Qualified subject tutors online at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists at AED 200-450, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium or examiner-led from AED 500-650, with BartyED at AED 650.

For physics specifically, the uncertainty and investigation work genuinely requires the specialist band, because a tutor who has not supervised an investigation against the published criteria cannot give criterion-level feedback. Content catch-up on kinematics or circuits does not, and paying specialist rates for it is the standard overspend in this subject.

A useful piece of context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. These are market figures and not IB Gram prices. We publish no price list here and start with a free trial lesson instead.

Practicals, honesty and the regulators

  • Online tutoring covers the assessed practical skills: design, uncertainty, graphs, evaluation
  • Laboratory hours remain the school's responsibility and are not replaceable online
  • Tutors give feedback on the student's own drafts and never write assessed work
  • We do not reproduce or distribute IB papers, mark schemes or subject guides
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years; IB Gram holds no regulator approval

A question Production City families reasonably ask is whether online physics tutoring can support practical work. For the parts that are assessed, yes. Experimental design, choice of measurement range, repeats, uncertainty propagation, graph construction, gradient analysis and evaluation are all paper skills and all teachable over video. What online tutoring cannot replace is the hours a student spends handling apparatus, which is the school's responsibility and which schools do.

The honesty boundary is firm. A tutor teaches the physics, explains each criterion, questions the design, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of an investigation, generate data, or supply text. The line is authorship, and the consequence of crossing it is an academic malpractice finding against the student rather than against the tutor.

We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material. We reference the official source and work from papers the student or school legitimately holds. Any provider offering a downloadable library of IB material is distributing material it does not own.

On regulation: Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, with ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah and the Ministry of Education covering Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Individual tutors need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. IB Gram is not IB authorised, KHDA approved or ADEK approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit and has no UAE office.

Starting physics support at whatever point you are at

  • Send the level, the school, and a marked script or the investigation draft
  • Free trial lesson on the current sticking point, with a written note afterwards
  • Investigation deadlines take priority over paper work when both are live
  • Availability given as a date; we do not substitute a different science specialist
  • No UAE home visits; home tutoring is an India-only service for us

Send three things: the level, the school, and either a recent marked script or the investigation draft. A marked script distinguishes a content gap from a structure problem from an uncertainty problem, and those need entirely different work. The investigation draft is more urgent if one exists, because it has a deadline and the papers do not yet.

Then take the free trial lesson, which is a real teaching hour on the current sticking point rather than a consultation, with a short written note afterwards on what the tutor found in theme and criterion terms. No card is held, nothing renews, and if the match is wrong we rematch once at no charge.

On availability, Higher Level physics with investigation supervision in a specific evening slot is one of the thinner parts of our coverage, and a wait of two to four days is normal, longer near mocks. We give the date rather than substituting somebody who teaches a different science. If the specialist is based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book.

Production City sessions usually land at 5:30pm Gulf Standard Time or later on weekdays, with weekend mornings better for graph and uncertainty work that needs concentration. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots are a normal request and the slot is held. What we will not do, in IMPZ or anywhere in the UAE, is send a tutor to your address; that service runs in India only.

Where we tutor

Where this cluster's physics students study, and when they get home

Six communities around Production City, noted for the two things that affect a physics plan: which campus sets the internal deadlines, and what time a session can realistically start.

Dubai Production City (IMPZ)

No campus inside the community. Diploma students are typically home between four and half past, so weekday physics sessions start from 5:30pm, with weekend mornings better for data-analysis work.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School on site, running the IB continuum. Students arriving from its MYP are usually the best prepared in the cluster for the investigation and the least prepared for timed papers.

Al Furjan

Arbor School inside the community is British curriculum, so Al Furjan's Diploma students travel. A strong IGCSE cohort means many arrive able to calculate and unable to design an experiment.

Discovery Gardens

Large and dense, with demand skewed to Standard Level physics alongside Mathematics. Requests here cluster on electricity and on the uncertainty work that the data-analysis section examines.

Jebel Ali

British and Indian curriculum campuses dominate, so Diploma physics students from here are a smaller, self-selected group, usually at Higher Level and usually aiming at engineering.

Dubai South and Emaar South

Fairgreen International School to the east is the nearest IB continuum campus. The longest bus day in the cluster, which argues for thirty-minute weekday sessions rather than hour-long ones.

Green Community

Inside Dubai Investments Park, effectively on Greenfield's doorstep, with the shortest school run in the cluster and the only realistic early weekday slot.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Production City

Dubai Investments Park and Motor City

The closest campuses to Production City. Greenfield International School runs the IB continuum; the others are British curriculum with sixth-form routes. For physics this matters because MYP and IGCSE entrants need opposite things in the first term of DP1.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the internal deadline calendar

The dates that govern a physics student's two years are set by the school, not the IB: investigation design, data collection window, write-up, internal submission and mocks. Ask for the calendar at the first DP1 parents' evening and keep it visible. We build the plan around it and re-check it every four to six weeks.

  2. 02

Send a marked script or the investigation draft

A marked script separates a content gap from an explain-question problem from an uncertainty problem. An investigation draft is more urgent when one exists, because it carries a fixed deadline while the papers are still months away. Either is worth more than a report card for deciding what the first ten hours should do.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson, then decide

A real teaching hour on this week's sticking point, followed by a short written note on what the tutor found in theme and criterion terms. No card held, nothing renews. If the match is wrong you say so and we rematch once at no charge rather than asking you to compare profiles first.

  4. 04

    Build uncertainty before content

Uncertainty is the only part of the course assessed twice, on the Paper 1 data-analysis section and inside the investigation. Taught as one system it takes three to five sessions. Taught piecemeal as topics arise it never settles, which is why so many DP2 students can do the physics and cannot say how well they know it.

  5. 05

Re-plan after mocks from the component marks

Mock grades blend three unrelated failure modes. The component marks separate them: theme gaps, explain-question structure and data analysis each need different hours and different work. We rewrite the spring plan from the script rather than continuing an autumn plan that no longer describes the student.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Physics specialists, at the right level

The Higher Level extensions are separate content, not more of the same material, so a tutor is matched to the level the student actually takes. A science generalist covering physics, chemistry and biology cannot hold three sets of mark-scheme conventions, and in explain questions the convention is the mark.

Work sequenced to the two-year calendar

Uncertainty early because it is assessed twice, investigation design in DP1 because a weak question caps a fifth of the grade, timed papers in DP2 when the internal component is banked. Buying the right work at the wrong time is the most expensive error in this subject and no competitor page addresses sequencing at all.

Criteria named and taught

Investigation support starts from the published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, which no competitor page in our research names. A student who reads the criteria before choosing a research question produces a measurably different investigation from one who reads them afterwards.

Explain-question structure drilled

Name the quantity, name the relationship, state the direction, state the consequence. Four steps, in that order, which usually earn every available mark without being longer than what the student was already writing. This is the largest pool of recoverable marks in most physics scripts and it takes three to five hours.

Honest about which band you need

Investigation and uncertainty work needs the specialist band at AED 200-450. Content catch-up on kinematics does not, and budget tutors advertise from AED 45. Paying specialist rates for content revision is the standard overspend in this subject and nobody selling at the top of the market mentions it.

A saved record of every graph

Online delivery keeps a shared whiteboard archive of graphs, error bars and gradient work, so a student practising the data-analysis section in April is reading their own corrected working from November rather than reconstructing the method from memory.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Production City: your questions answered

What should a DP1 physics student work on first with a tutor?+

Uncertainty, almost always, and then the investigation research question. Uncertainty is the only part of the course assessed twice, on the Paper 1 data-analysis section and inside the internal component, and schools have least time to teach it properly because it sits across topics rather than inside one. The research question comes next because a question that cannot produce enough measurable variation caps roughly a fifth of the grade before revision begins. Content catch-up matters but it is repairable later, and those two are not.

Why does my son understand physics and still score half marks?+

Because he is describing outcomes where the mark scheme wants principles named. An explain question asking why a lamp dims when another is added in parallel awards marks for total resistance, current drawn, the effect of internal resistance on terminal potential difference, and then the brightness. Writing that current goes elsewhere describes the result and names nothing the examiner can credit. The fix is a four-step structure: name the quantity that changes, name the relationship, state the direction, state the consequence. Three to five hours usually changes it measurably.

How is uncertainty actually examined in IB Physics?+

In two places, which is why it is the highest-value single skill in the course. On the Paper 1 data-analysis section, where students plot error bars, take a gradient with its uncertainty from best and worst fit lines, and justify significant figures. And inside the scientific investigation, where the data analysis and evaluation criteria both depend on it. Taught as one system covering absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty plus propagation rules, it takes three to five focused sessions. Taught piecemeal as topics arise, it never quite settles and students arrive in DP2 without it.

Which internal deadlines should we ask the school about in DP1?+

Four: when the investigation design has to be agreed, when the data collection window opens and closes, when the write-up is due, and when the school's internal submission date falls, which is typically in the autumn or winter of DP2. Ask for the whole internal deadline calendar at the first DP1 parents' evening, because those dates govern the student's year far more than any IB date does, and they move more often than families expect. We build the plan around that calendar and re-check it every four to six weeks.

Can a tutor help with the physics investigation without crossing the line?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor can teach the physics the investigation rests on, explain each criterion and what the descriptors require, interrogate the research question until the apparatus can actually answer it, discuss whether the method will produce usable data with enough repeats, and read a draft the student wrote and say where it falls short. A tutor cannot write any part, supply text, generate data, rewrite a section to final form or choose the topic. The test is authorship: every word and number must be the student's own.

Our daughter's mock was a 4. What does that actually tell us?+

Very little on its own, because the grade blends three unrelated problems. Ask the school for component marks. Clusters of blank questions in one theme mean a content gap, usually fields or quantum physics, needing eight to fifteen hours of teaching in dependency order. Attempted questions at half credit throughout mean explain-question structure, three to five hours. Strong multiple choice with weak data analysis means an uncertainty problem, not a physics problem, and treating it as physics wastes a term. Only the script distinguishes them.

Is Higher Level physics significantly harder than Standard Level?+

It is more content and genuinely different content, rather than the same material examined harder. The Higher Level extensions across fields, thermal physics and quantum physics add abstraction that Standard Level students never meet, and the paper demands rise accordingly. The practical implication for tutoring is that a tutor should be matched to the level the student is actually taking, because somebody comfortable teaching Standard Level is not automatically comfortable with the extensions. Check whether the target degree requires Higher Level before committing, since some engineering and physics programmes specify it.

Can online lessons prepare a student for the data-analysis section?+

Yes, and arguably better than in-person work, because graph construction, error bars and gradient analysis are done on a shared whiteboard that saves every step. A student practising in April reads their own corrected working from November instead of reconstructing the method from a notebook. What online tutoring cannot replace is the hours spent physically handling apparatus, which is the school's responsibility. The assessed skills, though, are design, measurement choice, repeats, propagation, plotting and evaluation, and all of those are paper work.

What do fields questions catch students out on most?+

The distinction between field strength and potential. They are different quantities with different units, one a vector and one a scalar, and students treat them as interchangeable descriptions of the same thing. The mark scheme is unforgiving here because the units give the answer away: a student writing about potential in units of newtons per kilogram has told the examiner exactly what they have confused. Teaching them as a pair, side by side, with the units written every time, is the intervention, and it takes a session or two rather than a term.

How many hours of physics support does a two-year plan need?+

A weekly session across DP1 and DP2 is roughly sixty to seventy hours, but the useful figure is smaller and better targeted. Uncertainty as a system takes three to five hours. Investigation design and criteria work takes six to ten. Explain-question structure takes three to five. A spring timed-paper block takes ten to sixteen. That is under forty hours spent where the marks are, spread across two years, which is a different purchase from an open-ended weekly arrangement and usually a better one.

What does specialist physics tuition cost in Dubai?+

The IB specialist band runs roughly AED 200-450 an hour, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200, and budget or university-student tutors advertise from AED 45. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai monthly estimates put specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000-2,000 or more. All figures were read in October 2026 and describe the market rather than our price list. We start with a free trial lesson instead.

Does it matter that our son came into DP1 from IGCSE physics?+

Yes, and it predicts exactly which half of the course he will find hard. An IGCSE entrant arrives with solid procedural physics and real timed-paper experience, and with almost no experience of open-ended investigation: he can rearrange equations and recall definitions but has rarely designed an experiment, chosen a measurement range or propagated an uncertainty. So the first term of DP1 should prioritise experimental design and uncertainty rather than content, because the content advantage will carry him for a term and the investigation deadline will not wait.

Which session do UAE physics candidates sit, and when should we begin?+

UAE IB schools sit the May session. We do not publish specific IB session or results dates because the IB's own site blocks automated verification and a date a parent plans around has to be right, so confirm windows with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. On timing, physics rewards starting in DP1 more than almost any other subject, because the investigation and the uncertainty skills both have to be built before the papers arrive, and both are nearly impossible to retrofit in the final term.

Do you send a physics tutor to our home in Dubai Production City?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. For physics specifically the online format keeps a shared whiteboard archive of graphs, error bars and gradient work that a student can revise from months later. Independent home tutors do work in this area, at roughly AED 180-350 an hour on published Dubai market rates, and for a younger child who needs physical supervision they can genuinely be the better choice.

What if no Higher Level physics specialist is free in our slot?+

We give you a date rather than a substitute. Higher Level physics with investigation supervision in a specific evening slot is one of the thinner parts of our coverage, and two to four days is normal, longer in the weeks around mocks. Putting a tutor who teaches a different science in front of a physics student wastes the hours, because explain-question conventions and uncertainty treatment differ between subjects. If the available specialist is based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book.

Sequence beats intensity in a two-year subject

Physics punishes late starts more than most Diploma subjects, because two of the three things that decide the grade have to be built before the papers arrive. Uncertainty as a system, early, since it is assessed twice. A research question the apparatus can actually answer, in DP1, since a weak one caps a fifth of the grade. Then explain-question structure in the autumn of DP2 and timed questions on identified themes in the spring. Ask the school for its internal deadline calendar, send a recent marked script, and take a free trial lesson before committing to anything.
