IB Chemistry Tutor in Dubai Production City

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai Production City earns their fee in three places: mole calculations done reliably under time pressure, organic mechanisms drawn with the notation the mark scheme awards, and a scientific investigation whose research question the apparatus can actually answer. This page is about those three. IB Gram teaches Production City students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Chemistry specialists only, at the level the student is actually taking
  • Mechanism notation taught as a marking convention, not as decoration
  • Investigation feedback given against the published criteria
  • Free trial lesson on the topic your child is stuck on this week

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Production City

Three things decide a chemistry grade, and all three are teachable

IB Chemistry is organised into two integrated strands, structure and reactivity, rather than the old topic list, and it is assessed by two written papers plus a scientific investigation worth roughly twenty per cent. Across that structure, the marks a Production City student loses concentrate in a small number of places, and they are the same places almost every year: multi-step mole calculations, mechanistic notation in organic chemistry, energetics and equilibrium reasoning, and an investigation whose research question was chosen before anybody checked whether it could produce data.

That is good news for a family deciding what to buy. Chemistry is not a subject where a student needs everything revised. It is a subject where four specific capabilities carry a disproportionate share of the available marks, and where a student who is secure in all four will perform close to their understanding. One who is insecure in moles will underperform in every paper regardless of how well they understand bonding.

The mole is the gate. It appears in titrations, in gas calculations, in empirical formulae, in energetics, in equilibrium constants, and in the quantitative part of nearly every structured question. A student who has to think about it rather than doing it automatically spends time they need elsewhere, makes arithmetic slips under pressure, and loses marks that have nothing to do with chemical understanding. Fixing that is drill, and it works.

Organic chemistry is the second concentration, and the losses there are almost entirely notational. A correct product written without curly arrows, without a lone pair shown, without a named intermediate, scores a fraction of the available marks. The mark scheme is awarding the mechanism, not the outcome, which is a convention rather than an opinion, and once a student understands that the drawing is the answer their marks move quickly.

Dubai Production City has no IB World School inside it. Students travel to Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, to the Al Barsha ring, or to Fairgreen International School to the south. Delivery is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run in India only. For chemistry the online format has a practical benefit: mechanisms drawn on a shared whiteboard are saved, so a student revising in the spring is reading their own corrected arrows from November.

We do not publish IB session or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated verification and a date a parent plans around has to be correct. UAE IB schools sit the May session; confirm windows with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org. Component structures and assessment criteria, which is what most of this page describes, are published in the subject guide your child's school already holds. Reviewed October 2026.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter for chemistry in this cluster, and the entry route into DP1 predicts which half of the course a student will struggle with. That prediction is worth making before buying any hours.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Two integrated strands. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, the atom, bonding, and classification. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much and how fast, and the extent of reactions. Higher Level extends organic chemistry, energetics, equilibrium and acid-base theory. Assessment is two written papers plus the scientific investigation.

Production City students commute to campuses that each set their own internal deadlines for the investigation, typically with data collection late in DP1 and the write-up in the autumn or winter of DP2. Ask for the school's internal deadline calendar at the first DP1 parents' evening, because that document governs the student's year more than any IB date does.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Assessed against four criteria scored one to eight, covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criteria B and C prepare a student directly for the Diploma investigation, but the MYP has no external examination, so timed paper experience is absent.

An MYP entrant into DP1 chemistry usually arrives able to frame an inquiry and unable to sit a timed paper, and with weaker quantitative drill than an IGCSE entrant. The final MYP term is where mole arithmetic and equation balancing should be made automatic, before the Diploma starts assuming both from week one.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry entry route

Students entering from Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 arrive with reliable equation balancing, basic mole work and real timed-paper experience. What they have not met is mechanistic organic chemistry, energetics beyond simple enthalpy changes, or open-ended investigation design with genuine uncertainty treatment.

Al Furjan and Jebel Ali send more IGCSE entrants into the Diploma than Dubai Investments Park does. For those students the first term of DP1 should prioritise mechanism notation and investigation design, because their quantitative advantage will carry them for a term while the organic conventions will not appear on their own.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The chemistry content that generates the most requests in this cluster, with the specific place marks go missing. These notes come from marking scripts rather than from a syllabus summary.

Quantitative chemistry and the mole

HL and SL

Moles, concentration, molar volume, limiting reagents, percentage yield and atom economy. The losses are arithmetic under time pressure and unit confusion between cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres. Making this automatic is the highest-return drill in the subject.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL

Electron configuration, ionisation energy trends and periodic properties. Students state a trend correctly and lose the explanation marks by naming shielding without naming effective nuclear charge, or the reverse, when the mark scheme wants both.

Bonding and structure

HL and SL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and shapes of molecules. Shape questions are lost on the distinction between electron domain geometry and molecular shape, and on omitting the effect of lone pairs on bond angles.

Energetics and thermochemistry

HL and SL

Enthalpy changes, Hess's law, bond enthalpies, and at Higher Level entropy and Gibbs free energy. Sign conventions cause most of the damage: an exothermic value written positive invalidates every subsequent step of an otherwise correct calculation.

Chemical kinetics

HL and SL

Rate, collision theory, activation energy and, at Higher Level, rate laws and the rate-determining step. Explanations lose marks when a student writes that particles have more energy without naming the proportion exceeding the activation energy.

Equilibrium

HL and SL

Dynamic equilibrium, Le Chatelier's principle and, at Higher Level, the equilibrium constant and its relationship to Gibbs free energy. The standard error is predicting a shift correctly and then failing to state the effect on the constant, which does not change with concentration.

Acids and bases

HL and SL

pH, strong and weak acids, titration curves and, at Higher Level, buffers and pKa. Buffer calculations are lost on setting up the ratio rather than on the arithmetic, and titration curve questions need the equivalence point distinguished from the half-equivalence point.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

HL and SL

Functional groups, reaction pathways and, at Higher Level, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the distinction between the two substitution routes. Marks are for curly arrows, lone pairs, charges and named intermediates, not for the product.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

A single internally assessed piece worth roughly twenty per cent, assessed across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design constrains every later criterion, which is why the question matters more than the write-up.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, chosen by what the student's script shows. In chemistry the diagnostic is unusually clear-cut, because the four high-value capabilities are easy to test separately.

Quantitative drill block

A short, deliberately repetitive block making mole work automatic: concentration, molar volume, limiting reagents, percentage yield, titration arithmetic and unit handling between cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres. Unglamorous and the highest-return thing available in the subject, because mole fluency is assumed in every quantitative question on both papers.

  • Short mixed calculations every session, timed, until the method is automatic
  • Unit conversion drilled explicitly rather than assumed
  • Limiting reagent identification practised as its own step
  • Error log showing whether losses are method or arithmetic

Mechanism and notation work

Sessions on organic chemistry treated as a drawing discipline. Curly arrows from the correct origin, lone pairs shown, charges marked, intermediates named, and the distinction between the two nucleophilic substitution routes drawn rather than described. The mark scheme awards the mechanism, so the mechanism is what gets practised.

  • Arrows drawn from lone pairs or bonds, never from atoms
  • Intermediates named and charges marked every time
  • Higher Level substitution routes distinguished by drawn evidence
  • Mechanisms saved on the shared whiteboard for later revision

Investigation supervision

Scheduled sessions through the scientific investigation, aligned to the school's internal deadlines. The tutor teaches each criterion, interrogates the research question against what the apparatus can measure, discusses whether repeats will justify an uncertainty, and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part.

  • Research question tested against measurable variation before data collection
  • Uncertainty treatment built into the method, not added afterwards
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback using the published descriptors
  • Written record of support given, available if the school asks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Production City

01

The mole is the gate, and it is pure drill

Of all the diagnostic work we do in chemistry, the most consistently revealing is a short set of mixed mole calculations under timing. A student who completes them automatically has a different problem from one who has to reconstruct the method each time, and the second student will underperform on both papers no matter how well they understand bonding or periodicity.

The reason is structural. Mole reasoning is assumed in titrations, gas calculations, empirical and molecular formulae, percentage yield, energetics, equilibrium constants and the quantitative parts of nearly every structured question. A student who spends ninety seconds working out which quantity to divide by which has spent ninety seconds they needed for the explanation question later in the paper, and will usually make an arithmetic slip while doing it.

The failures are predictable and almost never conceptual. Unit confusion between cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres, which costs a factor of a thousand. Forgetting to identify the limiting reagent before calculating yield. Dividing by the wrong molar mass because the formula was not written out. Losing a factor of two in a titration because the stoichiometric ratio was assumed to be one to one.

The fix is drill, which nobody finds appealing and which works. Short mixed sets, timed, every session, until the method is automatic rather than remembered. Four or five sessions does it for most students, and the effect shows up in marks across both papers rather than in one topic, which makes it the best-value hours a Production City family can buy in this subject.

02

Organic chemistry is a drawing discipline

  • Arrows begin at a lone pair or a bond, never at an atom
  • Charges and lone pairs are marked every time, not implied
  • Intermediates are drawn and named, with the charge on the correct atom
  • Higher Level substitution routes are distinguished by the drawing, not by a sentence
  • Pathway questions need reagents and conditions, not only the intermediate structures

The single most common misunderstanding in Diploma chemistry is that an organic question wants the product. It does not. It wants the mechanism, and the mark scheme awards the components of the drawing: the arrow starting from the right place, the lone pair shown, the charge marked, the intermediate named and drawn, the second arrow going where it should.

A student who writes the correct product and nothing else has usually earned one mark out of four. That is not a judgement on their chemistry, which may be sound; it is a marking convention, and once a student understands that the drawing is the answer their marks move fast. We treat organic sessions as practice in drawing rather than practice in predicting.

The specific conventions matter. An arrow begins at a lone pair or at a bond, never at an atom. A curly arrow shows the movement of an electron pair, so a half-arrow is a different claim. An intermediate in electrophilic addition carries a positive charge that must be drawn on the correct carbon, because the mark scheme distinguishes between a correct and an incorrect carbocation. At Higher Level, the distinction between the two nucleophilic substitution routes has to be shown through the drawn mechanism rather than asserted in a sentence.

Pathway questions add a second skill. Converting one functional group to another over two or three steps needs the reagents and conditions named, not just the intermediate compounds. Students write the structures and omit the conditions, which is half an answer. Building a one-page pathway map that the student draws themselves, repeatedly, is the exercise that fixes it.

03

Energetics, equilibrium and the reasoning the mark scheme wants

  • Write the sign convention before calculating, not after
  • Bonds broken endothermic, bonds formed exothermic, signs kept consistent
  • Only temperature changes the equilibrium constant; concentration and pressure do not
  • Kinetics explanations need the proportion exceeding activation energy, not just more energy
  • The mark scheme awards the links in the reasoning chain, not the conclusion

Energetics and equilibrium produce a particular kind of lost mark: the student reaches the right conclusion and does not say the thing that earns the credit. Both topics are assessed through chains of reasoning, and the mark scheme awards the links rather than the destination.

In energetics, sign convention does most of the damage. An exothermic enthalpy change written as positive invalidates every subsequent step of an otherwise correct Hess's law calculation, and the student loses marks for a convention rather than for chemistry. Bond enthalpy calculations add a second trap: bonds broken are endothermic and bonds formed exothermic, and a student who sums them with consistent signs gets the right answer while one who mixes them loses the lot.

In equilibrium, the recurring error is answering only half the question. A student asked about increasing concentration predicts the shift correctly and then does not state what happens to the equilibrium constant, which does not change with concentration. Temperature is the only variable that alters the constant, and that distinction is worth marks on most equilibrium questions in some form.

Kinetics belongs here too. An explanation that says particles have more energy at higher temperature is not wrong but earns little, because the mark scheme wants the proportion of collisions exceeding the activation energy. Naming the mechanism of the change rather than describing the change is the general rule in all three topics, and once a student has it, their answers get shorter as well as better.

04

The investigation, and why the research question decides the mark

The scientific investigation is a single internally assessed piece worth roughly twenty per cent, assessed across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Almost no competitor page in this market names a single criterion, despite them being published in the subject guide every school holds.

In chemistry, research design fails in a specific way. A student picks a question they find interesting, such as the effect of a household variable on a reaction, without checking whether their apparatus can measure the dependent variable precisely enough to show a trend across the range available. The result is a flat dataset, which makes the data-analysis criterion hard and the conclusion criterion nearly impossible to satisfy well.

Testing the question before committing is the intervention, and it takes one session. What exactly is being measured, with what instrument, to what precision, across what range of the independent variable, with how many repeats, and will the expected variation exceed the uncertainty? A question that fails that test should be changed in week one rather than rescued in month four.

Our role is bounded and we state the boundary plainly. We teach what each criterion requires, interrogate the research question, discuss whether the method will produce usable data, and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. We do not write, rewrite or complete any part of an investigation, nor generate data. One operator in our research sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750; the malpractice consequence of buying one falls on the student, not the seller.

05

Paper structure, command terms and time allocation

  • State wants a fact; explain wants a named mechanism or reason
  • Deduce wants the reasoning shown, not just the conclusion
  • Allocate roughly a minute per mark and check the mark value first
  • Data-based questions reward precision about what the data supports
  • Command-term definitions are published in the subject guide the school holds

Chemistry is assessed by two written papers, one including multiple-choice and data-based work and the other extended response, plus the investigation. Students who are strong on content and weak on marks are usually losing them to command terms and to time allocation rather than to chemistry.

The command terms do specific jobs. State wants a fact and no reasoning. Outline wants a brief account. Describe wants an account of features or a sequence. Explain wants a mechanism or reason named. Deduce wants a conclusion drawn from given information with the reasoning shown. Suggest wants a plausible answer where more than one is defensible. A student who writes an explanation for a state question has spent three minutes earning one mark.

Time allocation follows from mark value. Roughly a minute per mark, glanced at before starting the question, is the habit that prevents a strong script thinning out towards the end. Students resist this because interesting questions attract attention disproportionately, which is exactly how a paper ends with two unattempted parts worth six marks.

Data-based questions deserve separate practice. They examine reading a table or graph, identifying a trend, and explaining it in chemical terms, and they reward precision about what the data does and does not show. A student who asserts a cause the data cannot support loses marks that a more cautious sentence would have earned. Writing what the data shows, then what it suggests, then what it cannot establish, is a three-sentence habit that scores reliably across both papers and takes very little practice to acquire.

06

Past-paper work that produces improvement

  • Mark against the published mark scheme, not an answer key
  • Topic questions first, mixed sections next, full papers last
  • Every attempt timed, because the traps only surface under time pressure
  • Error log categorised by notation, content, arithmetic and pacing
  • We reference official IB material rather than redistributing it

Doing past papers is not a method. Marking them against the published mark scheme, under timing, with a categorised error log, is a method. Most students do the first part and then plateau after three or four papers, which families read as a ceiling on ability when it is a marking problem.

The mark scheme is diagnostic in a way a score is not. It shows that a particular line earned the method mark and the next did not, that an answer needed a unit to score, that a mechanism lost two marks for an arrow starting at an atom. A student who learns that half their losses are notational has a completely different plan from one whose losses cluster in equilibrium.

Sequence matters. Topic questions first, while the content is fresh from the school lesson. Then mixed sections under timing, because mixing exposes the traps that topic practice hides: a student doing a set of mechanism questions already knows the topic is mechanisms. Then full papers, late, when the student can finish one without exhausting themselves.

We do not reproduce or distribute IB past papers, mark schemes, subject guides or grade-boundary tables, which are copyright material. We work from papers the student or school legitimately holds and reference the official source. Any provider offering a downloadable library of IB material is distributing what it does not own, which is worth noticing. Your child's chemistry teacher can supply past papers through the school, and that channel is both legitimate and usually quicker than anything a tutor could arrange.

What chemistry support costs in Dubai, and which band buys what

The useful framing is which band each piece of work needs, because chemistry splits cleanly. Mole drill needs supervision and patience rather than specialist expertise, and budget or university-student tutors advertising from AED 45 an hour can do it competently. Mechanism notation and investigation criteria work need somebody who has marked against the published descriptors, which is the specialist band.

The Dubai bands, read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 rate table. Budget or university-student tutors at AED 45-150, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. Qualified subject tutors online at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists at AED 200-450, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium or examiner-led from AED 500-650, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one at AED 180-350, rising to AED 500 for specialist levels.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. A Diploma chemistry student with one weekly session sits in the upper two bands for most of DP2.

Context worth having: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. These are market figures and not IB Gram prices. We publish no price list here and start with a free trial lesson and an honest conversation about which band the actual problem needs.

Honesty, practicals and the regulators

  • Operators selling completed investigations expose the student to malpractice, not themselves
  • A tutor teaches criteria, questions design and reviews the student's own drafts
  • Online tutoring covers assessed practical skills; lab hours remain the school's job
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years; no fine schedule is published
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or UAE premises

Chemistry is the subject where the essay-mill end of this market is most active, because an investigation is a discrete deliverable with a deadline. One operator in our competitor research sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750. Buying one is an academic malpractice finding against the student and it sits on their record rather than the seller's.

The legitimate line is clear. A tutor teaches the chemistry an investigation rests on, explains each criterion and what the descriptors require, interrogates the research question, discusses whether the method and repeats will support an uncertainty, and reads a draft the student wrote to say where it falls short of a criterion. A tutor never writes, rewrites, completes or supplies any part of the work, and never generates data.

On practical skills, online tutoring covers what is assessed: design, measurement choice, precision, repeats, uncertainty propagation, graph work and evaluation. It does not replace the hours a student spends handling apparatus, which is the school's responsibility. We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes.

On regulation: Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, with ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah and the Ministry of Education covering Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Individual tutors need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with no published fine schedule for working without one. IB Gram is not IB authorised, KHDA approved or ADEK approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit and has no UAE office.

Where we tutor

Where chemistry students in this cluster study

Six communities around Production City, noted for which campus sets the internal deadlines and what preparation students arrive in DP1 with. Both affect what chemistry support should do first.

Dubai Production City (IMPZ)

No campus inside the community. Diploma students are home between four and half past, so weekday chemistry sessions start from 5:30pm, with weekend mornings better for mechanism practice that needs sustained attention.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School on site running the IB continuum. MYP entrants from here are generally strong on inquiry and weaker on mole drill than their IGCSE-entering neighbours.

Al Furjan

Arbor School inside the community is British curriculum, so Al Furjan Diploma students travel. A strong IGCSE cohort arrives with reliable quantitative work and no exposure to mechanism notation at all.

Discovery Gardens

Large and dense, with demand skewed to Standard Level chemistry alongside biology. Requests here cluster on moles and on energetics sign conventions rather than on organic chemistry.

Jebel Ali

British and Indian curriculum campuses dominate, so Diploma chemistry students from here are fewer and usually at Higher Level, often with medicine or engineering in view.

Dubai South and Emaar South

Fairgreen International School to the east is the nearest IB continuum campus. The longest bus day in the cluster, which favours short frequent sessions over long ones.

Green Community

Inside Dubai Investments Park, a short run from Greenfield, and the only adjacent community where a weekday session before five works reliably through the term.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Production City

Dubai Investments Park and Motor City

The closest campuses to Production City. Greenfield International School runs the IB continuum; the others are British curriculum with sixth-form routes. For chemistry this matters because MYP and IGCSE entrants arrive with opposite strengths and need opposite first terms.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Start with a timed mole set

Before anything else, a short set of mixed mole calculations under timing. A student who completes them automatically has a different problem from one reconstructing the method each time, and that single diagnostic reorders the whole plan. It takes fifteen minutes and it is the most informative quarter hour available in this subject.

  2. 02

Send a marked script or the investigation draft

A marked script separates notational losses from content gaps from pacing. An investigation draft takes priority when one exists, because it carries a fixed internal deadline while the papers are still months away. Either is worth more than a report card for deciding what the first ten hours should do.

  3. 03

    Free trial lesson, then decide

A real teaching hour on this week's sticking point, followed by a short written note on what the tutor found in topic and criterion terms. No card held, nothing renews. If the match is wrong you say so and we rematch once at no charge.

  4. 04

    Fix notation before content

In organic chemistry the marks are in the drawing, so the first sessions are drawing practice: arrows from lone pairs, charges marked, intermediates named. Students who think they have an organic content problem usually have a notation problem, and it resolves far faster than content work does.

  5. 05

Re-plan after mocks from component marks

Mock grades blend notational losses, content gaps and pacing failures into one number. Component marks separate them, and schools provide them on request. We rewrite the spring plan from the script rather than continuing an autumn plan that no longer describes the student.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Chemistry specialists, at the right level

The Higher Level extensions in organic chemistry, energetics and acid-base theory are separate content, not harder versions of the Standard Level material. A tutor is matched to the level the student takes, because a science generalist cannot hold three subjects' marking conventions at once.

Notation taught as a marking convention

Organic marks are awarded for arrows, lone pairs, charges and named intermediates, not for the product. We treat organic sessions as drawing practice, because that is what the mark scheme rewards, and students who thought they had a content problem usually move quickly once they see it.

The research question tested before data collection

In chemistry an investigation fails at design: a dependent variable the apparatus cannot measure precisely enough produces flat data and caps the analysis and conclusion criteria. We test the question against instrument precision, range and expected variation in week one rather than rescuing it in month four.

Mole fluency treated as the gate

Mole reasoning is assumed in titrations, gas calculations, energetics and equilibrium. A student who is slow at it loses marks across both papers for reasons unrelated to chemical understanding, and four to six sessions of timed drill fixes it. Unglamorous, and the best-value hours in the subject.

Honest about which band you need

Mole drill can be supervised competently by a budget tutor from AED 45 an hour. Mechanism notation and criterion-level investigation feedback need the specialist band at AED 200-450. Telling a family which is which usually reduces what they spend, which is why nobody selling at the top of the market does it.

A saved archive of mechanisms

Online delivery keeps a shared whiteboard record of every mechanism drawn and corrected, so spring revision starts from the student's own corrected arrows rather than from a textbook diagram they never had to produce themselves.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Production City: your questions answered

Why does my daughter know the chemistry and still lose organic marks?+

Almost certainly because she is writing the product instead of drawing the mechanism. The mark scheme awards the components of the drawing: the arrow starting from a lone pair or bond, the lone pair shown, the charge marked, the intermediate named and drawn on the correct atom. A correct product with nothing else usually earns one mark out of four. That is a marking convention rather than a judgement on her chemistry, and once she understands that the drawing is the answer her marks tend to move within a few sessions.

Is mole practice really worth paying a tutor for?+

It is the best-value work in the subject, and it does not need the most expensive tutor. Mole reasoning is assumed in titrations, gas calculations, empirical formulae, percentage yield, energetics and equilibrium constants, so a student who is slow at it loses marks across both papers for reasons unrelated to chemical understanding. Four to six sessions of timed mixed drill usually makes it automatic. A budget or university-student tutor at AED 45-150 an hour can supervise that competently, and paying specialist rates for it is a common overspend.

What unit mistake costs chemistry students the most marks?+

Cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres, which is a factor of a thousand and therefore the kind of error that makes an answer obviously wrong without the student noticing under time pressure. The fix is mechanical: convert units as a separate written step before any arithmetic, every time, rather than doing it in the same line as the calculation. The companion trap is molar volume questions where the conditions are stated and students use a remembered value instead of the one given, which the mark scheme does not forgive.

How do we stop the investigation producing a flat dataset?+

Test the research question before any data is collected. Establish what exactly is being measured and with what instrument, the smallest change that instrument reads reliably, at least five well-spaced values of the independent variable, and whether the expected variation exceeds the uncertainty. If the predicted change is smaller than the instrument's precision, the data will read as noise no matter how carefully it is collected. That check takes one session in week one and prevents the most common way a chemistry investigation caps its own marks.

Which criteria is the chemistry investigation marked against?+

Criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, all published in the subject guide your child's school holds. Research design constrains everything after it, because a question the apparatus cannot answer precisely leaves nothing for the analysis criterion to work with. Evaluation needs stated limitations and realistic improvements rather than apologies. We teach what each descriptor asks for and give feedback on drafts the student wrote, and we never write, rewrite or complete any part of the work in any circumstance.

What goes wrong with energetics sign conventions?+

An exothermic enthalpy change written as positive invalidates every subsequent step of an otherwise correct Hess's law calculation, so a student loses marks for a convention rather than for chemistry. Bond enthalpy questions add a second layer: bonds broken are endothermic and bonds formed exothermic, and a student who mixes the signs loses the whole calculation while one who keeps them consistent gets it. The habit that fixes both is writing the sign convention down before starting rather than deciding it during the arithmetic.

Does the equilibrium constant change when we change concentration?+

No, and this is one of the most frequently dropped marks in the subject. Temperature is the only variable that alters the equilibrium constant. Changing concentration or pressure shifts the position of equilibrium, which is a different claim, and a student who predicts the shift correctly and then says the constant increased has given away marks they had earned. Most equilibrium questions test this distinction in some form, so the discipline is to answer both halves: what happens to the position, and what happens to the constant.

Should our son take chemistry at Higher or Standard for a medicine route?+

It is more content and genuinely different content rather than the same material examined harder. The Higher Level extensions in organic chemistry, energetics including entropy and Gibbs free energy, equilibrium constants and acid-base theory with buffers and pKa add material Standard Level students never meet. The practical implication is that a tutor should be matched to the level actually being taken. Check whether the target degree requires Higher Level chemistry before committing, since many medicine and some engineering routes specify it and the decision is hard to reverse.

Can online chemistry tutoring help with practical work?+

For the assessed parts, yes. What the investigation and the data-based paper questions examine is design, measurement choice, precision, repeats, uncertainty propagation, graph construction and evaluation, and all of those are paper skills that work well over video with a shared whiteboard. What online tutoring cannot replace is the hours spent physically handling apparatus, which remains the school's responsibility and which schools do. The useful division is that the lab teaches technique and the tutoring teaches what the criteria reward about that technique.

Our son's mock chemistry grade dropped. What should we look at?+

Ask the school for component marks rather than working from the grade. Notational losses in organic questions, content gaps clustered in equilibrium or acid-base theory, arithmetic slips in quantitative work and a script that thins towards the end are four different problems needing four different plans. Notation and arithmetic are the fastest to fix, often within four to six sessions. Content gaps take longer. A grade cannot distinguish them, and buying hours before you know which you have is how families spend twice what they needed to.

How should past papers be used in chemistry specifically?+

Marked against the published mark scheme rather than an answer key, under timing, and in sequence: topic questions while content is fresh, then mixed sections, then full papers late. Mixing matters particularly in chemistry, because a student working through a set of mechanism questions already knows the topic is mechanisms, which is exactly the clue the real paper withholds. Keep a categorised error log distinguishing notation, content, arithmetic and pacing, because the proportions in that log tell you what the next ten hours should be.

Will you supply IB chemistry past papers and mark schemes?+

No. IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are copyright material and we neither reproduce nor distribute them. We reference the official source, link to it, and work from papers your child or their school legitimately holds. Your child's chemistry teacher can supply past papers through the proper channel, which is the route to use. Any provider offering a downloadable library of IB material is distributing what it does not own, and that is worth noting for what else it might treat casually.

What does chemistry support cost across the two Diploma years?+

It depends which work you buy rather than how many weeks you book. Mole drill is four to six hours and can sit at the budget band from AED 45. Mechanism notation is four to eight hours at the specialist band of AED 200-450. Investigation criteria work is six to ten hours at the specialist band. A spring timed-paper block is ten to sixteen hours at the qualified band of AED 150-300. That is under forty targeted hours, which is a different purchase from a weekly arrangement running sixty to seventy.

Does your chemistry tutor come to our address in IMPZ?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. For chemistry the online format keeps a shared whiteboard record of every mechanism drawn and corrected, which a student can revise from months later rather than reconstructing from a textbook diagram. Independent home tutors do operate in this area at roughly AED 180-350 an hour on published Dubai market rates, and for a younger child needing physical supervision they can be the better choice.

You have nobody free in our Tuesday slot. What do you actually do then?+

We give you a date rather than a substitute. Higher Level chemistry with investigation supervision in a specific evening slot is one of the thinner parts of our coverage, and two to five days is normal, longer near mocks and internal deadlines. Putting a biology or physics specialist in front of a chemistry student wastes the hours, because the marking conventions differ sharply between the three sciences. If the available specialist is based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book.

Four capabilities carry the grade

Chemistry is unusually diagnosable. Mole work automatic under timing, mechanisms drawn with the conventions the mark scheme awards, energetics and equilibrium reasoning stated link by link, and an investigation whose research question the apparatus can genuinely answer. A student secure in all four performs close to their understanding; one insecure in any of them underperforms for reasons that have nothing to do with chemistry. Start with a timed mole set and a recent marked script, take a free trial lesson, and let the evidence choose the first ten hours rather than the topic that produced the last bad mark.
