IB Chemistry IA Help in the UAE

Parents searching for IB Chemistry IA help in the UAE are almost always searching against a date. A school draft deadline has appeared on the calendar, the Scientific Investigation is worth a fifth of the Chemistry grade, and nobody at home can tell whether the write-up in front of them is close or nowhere near. This page counts the whole thing backwards from submission week, names the assessment criteria and the marks attached to each, and explains what a tutor working over live video can legitimately do at every stage.

  • Chemistry specialists who have marked and moderated school science coursework
  • Sessions planned backwards from your school's own draft deadline
  • Student keeps the pen: we teach, question and give feedback only
  • Live one-to-one over video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

The investigation has a date on it, so start from the date

Almost every family that goes looking for IB Chemistry IA help in the UAE arrives at the same moment in the same week. The school has issued an internal deadline for a first full draft. The student has some readings in a notebook, a title that sounds like a question, and a growing suspicion that the numbers do not show what the title promised. The deadline is in eleven days. Nobody in the house knows whether that is a crisis or a normal Tuesday in DP1.

It is usually neither. The Scientific Investigation is a single piece of work carrying twenty-four marks and a fifth of the Chemistry grade, and it is the one component where a student can still change their own outcome by weeks of ordinary effort rather than by luck on the day. What makes it feel like a crisis is that the work has no visible structure from outside. A past paper has a mark scheme a parent can see. An investigation looks like a document that is either finished or not, and the gap between a mark in the low teens and a mark in the low twenties is invisible until somebody who marks these things reads it.

So this page is organised as a countdown rather than as a list of services. The milestone table below counts weeks backwards from a school draft deadline and says what should physically exist by each point: a question narrow enough to generate a trend, a method with a measured range rather than an intended one, a results table with uncertainties already in the column headings, a processed graph, and only then prose. Families who work in that order spend far less money on tutoring than families who write first and then try to rescue the chemistry afterwards.

Three things are specific to doing this in the UAE, and no competitor page in this market mentions any of them. School laboratory access here is tightly timetabled, so a method that needs four afternoons of bench time may simply be unavailable, and the student needs to know that in week one rather than week six. The Ramadan and Eid dates move each year against a school calendar that already compresses the second term, which routinely eats the fortnight a student assumed they had. And the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons that KHDA requires in every Dubai private school, whatever the licensed curriculum, sit in the same week as the Chemistry deadline and are not optional.

What follows names the assessment criteria by letter and by mark, shows where UAE students lose marks in each, sets out plainly what a tutor may and may not touch under IB academic-honesty rules, and publishes what this kind of support actually costs across the UAE market with the rates attributed to the providers who published them. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. Nobody is sent to a UAE address, and for coursework weeks that turns out to be the more useful arrangement, for reasons the comparison table sets out.

At a glance

  • Four assessment criteria, six marks each, twenty-four in total at both SL and HL
  • The deadline that governs the work is your school's, not the IB's
  • Data first, prose last: a graph you can defend is worth more than a tidy paragraph
  • A tutor may question, teach and give feedback; the student writes every word
  • Market rates for specialist IB science support run roughly AED 200-450 per hour
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Investigation skills are built across the IB continuum, not in DP1. The programmes below are described by what each one does to a student's ability to design a fair test, record a measurement honestly and say what the data does not show.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

DP Chemistry is where the Scientific Investigation sits. One independent investigation is assessed internally against four criteria and carries twenty marks in every hundred at Standard and Higher Level alike, which means an SL student and an HL student are writing to the same rubric even though the HL student has more syllabus to draw on. The remaining marks come from the written papers, so the investigation is the one component finished months before the examination window.

In UAE schools the DP Chemistry investigation is typically launched late in DP1 and submitted in internal drafts across the first half of DP2. Because the May session is the one almost every UAE school sits, the practical work tends to land either side of the winter break and the first drafts collide with January mocks. Ask your school's DP coordinator for the internal timeline in writing; it is the only date that actually governs the work.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences assesses inquiry and design, and processing and evaluating, as separate criteria with their own descriptors. A student who has been taught to write a hypothesis with a reason, identify a controlled variable and comment on the reliability of their own method arrives in DP1 already holding most of the investigation skill set. A student who has only ever followed a worksheet method does not, and that gap is the single most common reason a bright DP1 chemist stalls.

The UAE runs a large MYP cohort feeding into DP, and many families move between curricula mid-school. A student arriving into MYP 5 from an IGCSE or CBSE background has usually met practical write-ups as fixed-format exercises rather than as open investigations. Four to six sessions on experimental design in MYP 4 or 5 costs a fraction of rescuing an investigation under deadline two years later.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student taking DP Chemistry sits exactly the same investigation as a full Diploma candidate, but usually with less timetabled study time around it and a reflective project competing for the same weeks. Planning backwards matters more here, not less, because there is no slack anywhere in the term.

CP provision is thinner across the UAE than DP provision, so a CP student taking Chemistry is often one of a very small group in their school and may be the only one at Higher Level. That tends to mean less peer discussion of the investigation and fewer worked examples in circulation, which is precisely the gap one-to-one teaching fills.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP inquiry is where the habits start: predicting, changing one thing at a time, recording what happened rather than what was supposed to happen. None of it is assessed externally and none of it appears on a transcript, but the student who learned at nine that a result which contradicts the prediction is interesting rather than wrong is the student who later writes a real evaluation instead of an apology.

Most UAE IB schools run the full continuum on one campus, so a family choosing a PYP school is often choosing the DP their child will eventually sit. If Chemistry at Higher Level is a plausible destination, ask at the primary stage how many periods of science the upper PYP and MYP years actually get, and whether the laboratories are shared with the secondary timetable.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is the subject of this page, but internally assessed coursework runs through every DP subject a UAE student takes, and the deadlines overlap. The notes below say what each one demands and where its marks leak away.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The Scientific Investigation is twenty-four marks across four criteria and twenty per cent of the grade at both levels. Marks are lost most often in Data analysis: raw tables without uncertainties in the headings, processing that stops at an average, and graphs with no error bars or no attempt at a gradient. Organic reaction mechanisms and equilibrium dominate the written papers, so an investigation built on kinetics or on an equilibrium shift also pays twice.

Biology

HL and SL

The same four-criterion investigation, the same twenty per cent, but with biological variation to contend with. Students who take five measurements of a living system and then report a mean to four decimal places lose Evaluation marks they never knew existed. Statistical treatment is the differentiator: a standard deviation and a sensible comment on sample size reads as scientific maturity to a moderator.

Physics

HL and SL

Physics investigations usually produce cleaner data than Chemistry ones and are judged accordingly. A linearised graph is close to expected, so a student who plots raw against raw and fits a curve by eye has already capped Data analysis. Uncertainty propagation through a multi-step calculation is where Physics candidates separate from each other, and it is a teachable skill rather than a talent.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The mathematical exploration is twenty marks and a different beast: no laboratory, no apparatus, and a personal engagement expectation that punishes a topic lifted from a list. For a Chemistry student, AA HL is the route most UAE and UK medicine and engineering admissions tutors expect to see, and the overlap with Chemistry is real in rates, logarithms and equilibrium constants.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

AI carries the same exploration requirement but with statistics and modelling at its centre, which makes it the friendlier partner for a Chemistry student whose investigation leans on regression and correlation. Check prerequisites before choosing: some engineering and physical-science programmes still specify AA, and switching route in DP2 is close to impossible.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

ESS sits across the sciences and individuals-and-societies groups and carries its own internally assessed investigation. Chemistry students often find the environmental framing easier to design around, because a fieldwork or secondary-data investigation can be completed without competing for laboratory time. The risk is a question so broad that no trend emerges from the data at all.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

SEHS investigations attract students who want a human physiological measurement rather than a bench reaction. The ethical and consent requirements are stricter as a result, and a UAE school will usually require written approval before any participant is tested. Build that approval step into the timeline; students routinely lose a fortnight waiting for it.

Computer Science

HL and SL

The Computer Science solution is a developed product with documentation rather than an experiment, but the planning discipline is identical: a client, success criteria agreed in advance, and evidence of testing against them. Chemistry students taking CS often use their own investigation data as the dataset, which is efficient provided the two write-ups remain genuinely separate pieces of work.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK essay and exhibition are not science, but they consume the same DP2 weeks as the Chemistry investigation and are marked externally. Families planning a support block almost always underestimate this collision. A student who schedules the TOK essay and the Chemistry draft in the same ten days will do one of them badly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families use this support, depending on how much time is left. All of it runs one-to-one over live video at times that fit a UAE school day and Gulf Standard Time.

Milestone sessions across the investigation

A session at each checkpoint rather than a weekly standing slot: question design, method feasibility, a look at the first real data, processing and graphing, then one review of the student's complete draft before the school deadline. Five or six sessions spread over a term, which for most families is both cheaper and more effective than twenty weekly hours of general Chemistry.

  • Checkpoints set from your school's own internal deadline dates
  • Each session ends with one concrete task the student owns
  • Feedback is spoken and questioned, never typed into the student's document
  • Scheduled after school or after Iftar during Ramadan

Weekly Higher Level Chemistry teaching

For students whose difficulty is the chemistry itself rather than the write-up. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium, energetics and the quantitative work that carries most of the written-paper marks, taught weekly with the investigation folded in as applied practice. This is the right mode when a student's investigation is stalling because the underlying topic is not secure.

  • Topic sequence matched to the school's own scheme of work
  • Past-paper technique on official questions, referenced not reproduced
  • Written-paper and investigation work in the same hour where they overlap
  • One subject, one tutor, continuity across both DP years

Deadline-week review block

Two or three sessions in the final fortnight, for families who arrive late. The work is triage: find the criterion losing the most marks, decide what can still be fixed with the data that exists, and stop the student rewriting the parts that are already fine. No new experiment gets designed in deadline week, and we say so before taking the booking.

  • Honest first answer about what is and is not still achievable
  • Criterion-by-criterion read of the current draft, marks named
  • A fix list ranked by marks per hour of remaining effort
  • Nothing written for the student at any point

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What the Scientific Investigation is, and what the twenty-four marks are for

  • Four criteria, six marks each, twenty-four marks total
  • Twenty per cent of the Chemistry grade at SL and at HL
  • Marked by the school, then subject to IB moderation
  • Confirm the current criteria wording with your child's DP coordinator

A DP Chemistry student submits one independent scientific investigation. It is marked by the subject teacher against four published criteria, each worth six marks, giving twenty-four in total, and it contributes twenty per cent of the final Chemistry grade at Standard Level and at Higher Level alike. That last point surprises most parents: the Higher Level student has roughly half again as much syllabus to learn and sits a longer paper, but the investigation weighting is identical.

The four criteria are Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. They are not four sections of a document, although students treat them that way. Research design marks are earned by the methodological decisions a student can justify, which means a clearly identified independent and dependent variable, a stated and controlled set of other variables, and a range chosen because it will generate a trend rather than because it fits the apparatus. Data analysis marks live in the treatment of the numbers: recorded raw data with units and uncertainties, processing that goes beyond an average, and a graphical representation that actually supports the claim being made.

Conclusion asks for an interpretation of the student's own results compared against the accepted chemistry, with a source cited for the comparison value. Evaluation asks what the method's real weaknesses were and what a better version would look like, and this is the criterion where honest work outscores polished work. A student who identifies a systematic error they genuinely suspect, explains its direction, and proposes a specific correction will beat a student who lists three generic improvements about repeating the experiment more times.

The table below sets out the criteria with their marks and the failure that costs the most in each. It is the piece of information no page competing for IB Chemistry IA help in the UAE currently publishes at all, and it is the first thing a family should read, because it tells you what to look at when your child hands you a draft and asks if it is any good.

The investigation counted backwards from your school's draft deadline

Every family that asks for help with a Chemistry investigation asks the same first question in a different form: is there still time? The answer depends entirely on which milestone has already been passed, not on how many weeks remain. A student ten weeks out with no question is in more trouble than a student three weeks out with clean data, because data takes bench time and bench time is the one resource that cannot be compressed.

So the planning runs backwards. Fix the school's internal draft deadline first, in writing, from the coordinator. Then place the practical work far enough before it that a failed first attempt is survivable, because the first attempt usually does fail in some respect: the concentration range gives readings too close together, the reaction is too fast to time by hand, or the balance resolution swallows the mass change. Students who allow one spare laboratory session for the repeat finish calmly. Students who do not, do not.

The IB's own assessment timetable sits behind all of this, and it is the part that cannot move. The May session is the one almost every UAE school sits, and marks for internally assessed work have to be with the IB well before results are issued, which is why schools set internal deadlines that feel early. No IB session or results date is published on this page: ibo.org blocks automated checking, so confirm every IB date with your school's DP coordinator or on ibo.org directly rather than trusting a figure found on a tutoring site.

The milestone table below is the version we actually plan sessions from. Weeks are counted back from the school draft deadline, not from the examination. Where a row says what should exist, it means a physical artefact a parent could look at, because an IB Chemistry IA deadline is missed one invisible week at a time.

03

Where Chemistry investigations actually lose marks

  • Five or six spaced data points with repeats, not three
  • Uncertainties in the table headings from the first reading onwards
  • Error bars and a gradient, not a line joined dot to dot
  • An evaluation that names a weakness visible in your own numbers
  • A method the school's laboratory can actually accommodate

The failures are consistent enough to list. The most common is a research question that cannot produce a trend: too broad to constrain the variables, or with a range so narrow that every reading sits inside its own uncertainty. A student investigating reaction rate across three concentrations has three points, and three points do not establish a relationship. Five or six well-spaced concentrations with repeats at each is a different piece of work entirely, and the difference is decided in week one, not in the write-up.

The second is uncertainty treatment, and it is the clearest single separator in IB Chemistry HL data analysis. A burette reading carries an uncertainty. A balance carries one. A thermometer carries one. Those uncertainties have to appear in the raw table headings, be propagated through every calculation, and end up as error bars on the graph. Students who add a sentence saying that equipment has limitations, without ever carrying a number through, lose marks in Data analysis and then lose more in Evaluation because they have no quantitative basis for judging whether their result and the accepted value genuinely disagree.

The third is a conclusion that answers the hypothesis instead of the data. If the trend flattens at high concentration, say so and explain it; do not report a straight-line relationship because that was the prediction. Examiners reward a student who notices that their own numbers misbehave. The fourth is an evaluation built from a template: repeat more trials, use more accurate equipment, control the temperature better. Those sentences appear in thousands of drafts and earn almost nothing, because none of them is tied to an observed feature of this student's own results.

The fifth is specific to this market. UAE schools run tight laboratory timetables and many DP Chemistry sets share benches with IGCSE classes. A student whose method needs an hour of undisturbed bench time, three times over, may be designing an investigation their own school cannot host. Discovering that in week eight rather than week two is what turns a manageable piece of coursework into the eleven-day emergency this page opened with.

04

Choosing a Chemistry IA research question a UAE school lab can host

Question choice is where the most marks are won for the least effort, and where the least help is usually available. A subject teacher with twenty investigations to supervise can give each student a few minutes of feasibility discussion. That is enough to catch an obviously impossible plan and not nearly enough to turn a vague interest into a question with a measurable variable and a sensible range.

The practical constraint in UAE schools is apparatus and time rather than imagination. Controlled-temperature work needs a water bath that may be shared across three year groups. Anything involving a spectrophotometer depends on whether the school owns one and whether DP students are allowed on it unsupervised. Reactions producing gas need either a gas syringe or a mass-loss method, and the balance resolution decides whether mass loss is detectable at all. These are answerable questions, and the answers belong in week one.

The alternative routes are legitimate and underused. A database investigation using published thermodynamic or kinetic data can score full marks if the processing and evaluation are genuine, and it removes bench time from the critical path entirely. A simulation-based investigation is similarly acceptable provided the student treats the model's assumptions as part of the evaluation rather than as a disclaimer. Neither route is a soft option: the Evaluation criterion gets harder, not easier, because the student has to interrogate someone else's data collection instead of their own.

The table compares the main routes on the two axes that decide a UAE student's choice: whether the school can host it, and how much data it realistically produces. The right Chemistry IA research question is usually the narrowest one that still produces six honest data points.

05

Academic honesty: what a tutor may touch and what only the student may

This is the part of the market that deserves scrutiny. Research into the UAE tutoring landscape in October 2026 found a provider openly selling finished Internal Assessments at a fixed price. That is an academic-integrity breach, a malpractice trigger for the student rather than for the seller, and the consequence falls on a sixteen-year-old. Any offer of a completed piece of assessed coursework should be treated as a reason to walk away, whatever the price.

The honest boundary is not vague, and it is not restrictive either. A tutor may teach the chemistry, explain uncertainty propagation, ask why a range was chosen, point at a graph and ask what it shows, read a draft and say which criterion is weakest, and send a student away with a list of decisions to make. A tutor may not type into the student's document, dictate sentences, supply a method to copy, process the data on the student's behalf, or hand over a finished section. Everything in the submitted file must be the student's own work, produced by the student.

UAE schools take this seriously and the regulators do too. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and teachers tutoring outside school hours are required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document, as this was press-reported. The practical implication for parents is simple: your child's own Chemistry teacher is not the right person to pay for private help on the investigation that same teacher will mark.

The table states our boundaries as a list a parent can hold us to. Nothing in it is a marketing position. It is what IB academic-honesty rules require, written out so that a family can tell the difference between teaching and the thing that gets a Diploma withheld.

What Chemistry investigation support costs across the UAE market

No competitor page in this market publishes a rate table, and one ranking agency's own FAQ asks what tutoring costs and then declines to answer. So here are the market bands, attributed to whoever published them, as of October 2026. These are market rates and not an IB Gram price list: for our own figure, take the trial session and the consultation, where the rate for your subject and level is quoted before anything is booked.

The pattern across the market is consistent. Budget online tutoring, usually delivered by university students, advertises from AED 33 to 65 per hour at the bottom of the range. Qualified subject tutors working online sit between roughly AED 150 and 300. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level tutors run from about AED 200 to beyond AED 450, and a named premium provider publishes AED 650. In-home visits add travel to all of it, with published bands of AED 180 to 350 and individual home tutors asking AED 200 to 500.

For an investigation specifically, the cost driver is not the hourly rate but the number of hours, and that is set by how early the family starts. Five or six milestone sessions spread across a term, at a specialist rate, costs materially less than a weekly standing slot held for twenty weeks, and considerably less than a deadline-week rescue where the hours are spent on triage rather than teaching. Monthly packages seen across the market run around AED 799 per month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

One piece of useful context for a family budgeting the year: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there will be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. School fees are flat; tutoring spend is the variable a family actually controls, and the way to control it is to start the investigation early rather than to shop for a cheaper hour.

A tutor in the room against live online, with a coursework deadline running

Families searching for help with a Chemistry investigation in the UAE often start by looking for someone who will come to the house. It is a reasonable instinct and worth answering properly rather than deflecting. The market for in-home visits is real, the published rates sit between roughly AED 180 and 500 per hour inclusive of travel, and the constraint is geography: you are choosing from the tutors who can reach your address at the time your child is free, which in practice means a short list defined by traffic rather than by subject expertise.

IB Gram delivers this support as one-to-one online tuition over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and does not send tutors to addresses in the UAE. Home visits are offered only in India. That is a limit worth stating plainly, and for investigation work it is also an advantage rather than a compromise. A Chemistry investigation is a spreadsheet, a graph and a document. The work of a session is two people looking at the same uncertainty column and arguing about it. A shared screen does that better than two people leaning over one laptop, and the student keeps control of the file throughout, which is exactly what academic honesty requires.

The pool matters more than the postcode. A family in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah searching within driving distance for someone who has taught the current DP Chemistry guide will often find nobody at all. Searching online removes that constraint entirely and replaces a geographic short list with a subject short list. For Higher Level Chemistry, which is where UAE demand consistently outruns local supply, that is the difference between a specialist and whoever is available.

Scheduling is the other practical gain. Investigation work does not arrive in neat weekly parcels; it arrives when the data does. An online slot can be moved to the evening the student finally gets their laboratory session, or split into two short reviews in deadline week. A travelling tutor's diary cannot flex that way, because the travel has to be paid for whether the data is ready or not.

Ramadan, Eid and the UAE school calendar squeezing the investigation window

  • Finish bench work before the shortened school days begin
  • Use Ramadan for processing, writing and after-Iftar sessions
  • Assume the week after Eid produces nothing and plan accordingly
  • Count real school evenings, not calendar weeks, to the deadline

The UAE academic calendar does something to coursework that no generic IB advice accounts for. The second term is already the shortest and carries the heaviest assessment load, and Ramadan sits inside it with a shortened school day attached. Laboratory sessions are the first thing to go when the timetable compresses, because practical work needs longer blocks than a reduced day provides. Then Eid removes several more days, and the fortnight a student had mentally reserved for their repeat run disappears.

Because the dates shift each year against the school calendar, the planning rule has to be structural rather than a specific date. Get the practical work finished before the shortened days begin. Treat Ramadan as a writing and processing period, not a data-collection period, and move sessions to after Iftar, which most UAE families find works better than a late-afternoon slot in any case. Then treat the week after Eid as recovery rather than as productive time, because for a teenager it generally is.

KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements add a load that families outside the UAE never have to plan around. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements due for implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA calculates mandatory instructional time in forty-minute lesson units and requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes for the two groups prohibited. Those periods are not negotiable, and they sit in the same week as the Chemistry deadline.

The upshot is straightforward arithmetic. Count the actual school evenings between today and the school draft deadline, subtract the shortened days, the public holidays and the week that Eid absorbs, and subtract the evenings already committed to mandatory subjects and other coursework. The number left is almost always smaller than the number a family assumed, and it is the only number worth planning against.

After the mark: moderation, equivalency and the route into medicine

The mark a Chemistry teacher awards is not automatically the mark that counts. Internally assessed work is marked by the school against the published criteria and then moderated by the IB, which can adjust a school's marks upwards or downwards across the cohort if the school's application of the criteria differs from the standard. Chemistry IA moderation is the reason a generous teacher is not a gift and a strict one is not a disaster: what matters is whether the work genuinely meets the descriptors, not how one department reads them.

That has a practical consequence for how a family uses tutoring. The useful question for a tutor reading a draft is not whether the student will be pleased with the mark but whether the evidence for each criterion is actually on the page. A draft that scores well in the school and thinly against the descriptors is the profile most exposed to moderation. A draft with explicit uncertainty treatment, a conclusion anchored to a cited value, and an evaluation naming a real systematic error is the profile that holds.

Looking further forward, UAE families should also know what their certificates have to show for the Ministry of Education equivalency process. For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One ranking competitor in this market tells UAE parents they need six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong. No IB points threshold is published here, because none has been read on an official Ministry source, and an unsourced figure on an equivalency page is worse than no figure.

For the Chemistry student aiming at medicine or engineering, the subject choice behind the investigation matters as much as the mark. Higher Level Chemistry is the standard expectation for medicine in the UK and for most Gulf medical programmes, generally alongside Biology. Mathematics route choice is the decision families get wrong: Analysis and Approaches is what many engineering and physical-science admissions expect, while Applications and Interpretation suits a statistics-led path. Check the published prerequisites for the actual universities on your list before DP2 begins, and verify equivalency requirements on the Ministry's own channels rather than through any tutoring provider, including this one.

Where in the UAE this comes up, and what changes by emirate

Laboratory access, term pressure and the number of Chemistry teachers in a department all vary by emirate and by school size. These notes describe what families in each place actually run into during an investigation term.

Dubai

The deepest IB pool in the country, with 227 private schools and seventeen curricula under KHDA and seven further schools opening for 2026-27, three of them IB. Large Dubai DP cohorts mean a Chemistry department of several teachers and generally decent bench access, but also fixed laboratory timetables booked weeks ahead.

Abu Dhabi

Regulated by ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. DP cohorts are often smaller than Dubai's, so a Higher Level Chemistry set can be a handful of students sharing one teacher, and an investigation question outside that teacher's own specialism gets less scrutiny before submission.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves curricula, courses and assessment methods as well as fees. Many Sharjah families commute into Dubai schools, which turns a 4pm laboratory slot into a two-hour round trip and makes after-dinner online sessions the only workable option.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK. The IB provision is thinner than in Abu Dhabi city, so a student needing Higher Level Chemistry support frequently cannot find anyone locally who has taught the current guide. This is the clearest case for live video delivery rather than a search within driving distance.

Ras Al Khaimah

Private education is regulated by the Department of Knowledge, which also approves tuition fees, curricula and assessment methods. RAK appears in no competitor page in this market. Families here typically have one or two realistic school options and almost no local specialist Chemistry tuition market at all.

Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah

The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in these three emirates. DP Chemistry is offered in very few schools, and students often travel to Sharjah or Dubai for it. Online one-to-one is not a second-best arrangement here; it is the only way to reach a specialist in the subject at the right level.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai IB World Schools

Dubai's IB cohort is about seven per cent of the emirate's private-school pupils, which still makes it one of the largest DP populations in the Gulf. Students we support sit DP Chemistry at schools including those below. Internal draft deadlines differ by several weeks between them, which is why we plan from your school's calendar rather than a generic one.

  • Dubai International Academy - Emirates Hills
  • Deira International School
  • GEMS World Academy - Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Uptown International School
  • Greenfield International School

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain IB World Schools

ADEK-regulated schools in the capital run smaller DP sets than Dubai's, and a Higher Level Chemistry group of five or six students is common. Students we support sit DP Chemistry at schools including those listed here, and several have told us their investigation was launched in the same fortnight as their TOK exhibition.

  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named as context for the UAE IB landscape only; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or formal relationship with any school, school group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the school deadline first

The consultation starts with one date: when your child's school wants the full draft. Everything else is planned backwards from it. We also ask which criterion the student feels least sure about and whether any data exists yet, because those two answers determine whether this is a teaching job or a triage job.

  2. 02

A trial session on the live work

The first session uses the student's actual investigation, not a diagnostic exercise. A Chemistry specialist asks about the question, the range and the uncertainties, and at the end you get a plain statement of what is strong, what is at risk and roughly how many sessions the remaining work needs. The session condition and the rate for your level are stated before you book.

  3. 03

    Milestones, not a standing slot

We schedule against the checkpoints in the milestone table rather than booking a habitual weekly hour. For most families that is five or six sessions across a term. If the student needs weekly Chemistry teaching as well, that runs as a separate thread with the same tutor so nothing is repeated twice.

  4. 04

Each session ends with the student's task list

The tutor leaves the session with notes; the student leaves with decisions. What to measure next, which calculation to redo, which claim the graph does not yet support. Nothing is written into the student's file by anyone else, and the task list is deliberately short enough to be finished before the next session.

  5. 05

One pre-deadline read, then we stop

A full criterion-by-criterion read happens with roughly a fortnight to go, producing a fix list ranked by marks per hour of remaining effort. After that we deliberately stop suggesting improvements, because late rewriting damages sections that were already scoring. If no specialist is free at the time you need, we say so rather than substituting a generalist.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The criteria are published here, not withheld

The marks, the four criterion names and the costliest error in each are on this page in a table. No competing page for this query publishes any of it. A family that knows an investigation is twenty-four marks across four criteria can read a draft themselves and ask better questions of their school.

Rates are attributed, not implied

Every AED figure on this page is a market band with the provider who published it named and the date stated. None of them is our price. Our rate is quoted for your subject and level before you commit to anything, which is the opposite of the pattern across this market, where one ranking agency asks the price question in its own FAQ and then refuses to answer it.

A stated honesty boundary you can hold us to

The table in the academic-honesty section lists, activity by activity, what a tutor does and what only the student does. In a market where a provider openly sells finished coursework, a published boundary is the practical difference between help your child can submit and help that puts the Diploma at risk.

Specialists, not the nearest available person

Online delivery means a student in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah gets a Higher Level Chemistry specialist rather than whoever teaches science within driving distance. For Higher Level work in the smaller emirates, where there is effectively no local specialist market, that is the whole of the value.

Planning built around the UAE calendar

Shortened Ramadan days, Eid, and the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies periods all sit inside the investigation window. We count the school evenings that actually remain rather than the calendar weeks, which is usually the first time a family sees the real number.

Honest about what is still possible

If you arrive with nine days left and no data, the first answer is what can and cannot still be fixed, before any hours are sold. No new experiment is designed in deadline week and no grade is promised at any point, because no tutor can promise one. What a specialist can do is make sure the marks still available are the ones being chased.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

How many marks is the IB Chemistry Scientific Investigation worth, and how are they split?+

The investigation carries twenty-four marks and contributes twenty per cent of the final Chemistry grade at both Standard and Higher Level. Those marks are divided equally across four criteria, six marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. The even split matters because students spend most of their effort on the write-up and almost none on the experimental design, even though both carry the same six marks. Treat the four criteria as four separate marking decisions rather than as four sections of a document, and confirm the current criteria wording with your child's Diploma Programme coordinator, since guide revisions do change the descriptors.

When should a UAE Chemistry student start the Scientific Investigation?+

Work backwards from your school's internal draft deadline rather than forwards from today. In practice a student wants candidate questions roughly twelve weeks out, a written method and a booked laboratory slot by ten, a trial run with real readings by eight, and the full dataset by six. The UAE calendar is what makes this tighter than it looks: shortened Ramadan days remove practical sessions, Eid removes more, and the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies periods sit in the same weeks. Ask the coordinator for the internal deadline in writing, then count actual school evenings, not calendar weeks.

My son's research question is whether temperature affects reaction rate. Is that good enough?+

Not yet, because it has no range, no measurement method and no constrained variables. The same interest becomes a usable question when it names the reaction, states the temperature range and the number of intervals, specifies how rate will be measured, and lists what is being held constant. Research design marks reward exactly those decisions. A question this broad also tends to produce three data points, and three points cannot establish a relationship. Five or six well-spaced values with repeats at each turns the same idea into work that can score across all four criteria.

Our school laboratory cannot run the experiment he designed. What are the options?+

This is common in UAE schools, where benches are shared across year groups and practical blocks are timetabled weeks ahead. There are three routes. Redesign the method around apparatus the school actually has, which usually costs a week and saves a month. Switch to a database investigation using published thermodynamic or kinetic data, which can score full marks and removes bench time from the critical path. Or move to a simulation-based investigation, provided the model's assumptions are interrogated in the evaluation. None of these is a soft option; the Evaluation criterion gets harder when the data is not your own.

What is a tutor allowed to do with my daughter's raw Chemistry data?+

A tutor may teach her how instrument uncertainty works, show propagation worked through on practice numbers, ask why she chose that range, and look at her graph and ask what it actually demonstrates. A tutor may not process her data for her, type into her file, supply the calculations, or write any part of the submitted report. Every number and every word in the file has to be hers. That boundary is not us being cautious; Data analysis assesses her own quantitative handling, and supplied or fabricated data is malpractice that falls on the student, not on the provider.

How long should an IB Chemistry investigation report be?+

There is a published length limit for the investigation, and your school's Diploma Programme coordinator holds the current figure for the guide your child is assessed under. Check it with them rather than relying on a number found on a tutoring site, because the limit changed with recent guide revisions and older exemplars circulating online were written to a different one. The practical advice is more useful than the number anyway: most over-length drafts are long because the method is narrated rather than specified, and tightening that usually improves Research design while solving the length problem at the same time.

Is a simulation or database investigation penalised compared with a wet-lab one?+

No. The criteria do not reward bench work for its own sake, and a database or simulation investigation can score across all four criteria if the processing and evaluation are genuine. What changes is where the difficulty sits. With your own data you evaluate your own method. With published data you have to interrogate someone else's collection method, sample and assumptions, which is harder to do convincingly. Students choose these routes for a real reason in the UAE, where laboratory access is tightly timetabled, and the choice is defensible provided the evaluation does the extra work.

What does uncertainty propagation actually have to look like to score in Data analysis?+

It has to be visible as numbers, not described in a sentence. Each instrument's uncertainty belongs in the raw table heading alongside the unit. Those uncertainties are then carried through every calculation, so a processed value arrives with its own uncertainty attached. The graph shows error bars derived from that work, and the gradient or trend is treated with its own range. Students who write that equipment has limitations but never carry a figure through lose marks in Data analysis, then lose more in Evaluation, because they have no quantitative basis for judging whether their result and the accepted value genuinely differ.

His Chemistry draft is due in nine days and he has no results. What happens now?+

The first job is an honest assessment, not a booking. With nine days and no data, no new multi-session experiment is realistic, so the real options are a rapid redesign around apparatus available this week, or a switch to a published-data investigation that can be completed without bench time. Both are legitimate. What does not work is writing the report first and hoping data appears. We will tell you which marks are still reachable before selling any hours, and we will not design an experiment in deadline week and pretend it can be run.

Will the mark my child's teacher gives for Chemistry be the mark that counts?+

Not necessarily. The school marks internally assessed work against the published criteria and the IB then moderates, which can move a school's marks up or down across the cohort where the school's application of the criteria differs from the standard. So a generous department is not a gift and a strict one is not a disaster. What survives moderation is evidence actually present on the page: uncertainties carried through, a conclusion anchored to a cited accepted value, and an evaluation naming a specific systematic error. A draft that pleases a teacher but reads thinly against the descriptors is the most exposed profile.

Do older IB Chemistry exemplars still match the criteria our school is marking against?+

Often not, and this trips up a lot of families. The Chemistry guide has been revised, and the criterion names, their number and the mark allocations in circulating older exemplars may not match what your child is assessed under now. An exemplar written to a five-criterion scheme will teach a student to foreground things the current four criteria do not reward in the same way. Ask the coordinator which guide applies and work from the criteria your school will mark against. We reference official documents and link to them rather than reproducing them, which is a copyright matter as well as an accuracy one.

Does the Chemistry investigation differ between Standard Level and Higher Level?+

The investigation requirement and its weighting are the same: twenty-four marks, four criteria, twenty per cent of the grade at both levels. What differs is the syllabus a Higher Level student can draw on and the depth of chemistry a marker will expect in a Conclusion. An HL candidate explaining a kinetics result has more mechanism available and is judged against that. The practical implication is that HL students should not pick a question so simple that it gives them nowhere to show the extra syllabus, and SL students should not reach for one they cannot interpret.

Ramadan falls across our school's Chemistry draft deadline. How do we plan around it?+

Treat the shortened school days as a writing and processing period and finish all bench work before they start. Practical sessions need longer blocks than a reduced day gives, so they are the first thing a compressed timetable drops. Move tutoring to after Iftar, which most UAE families find easier than a late-afternoon slot anyway. Then assume the week following Eid produces nothing and plan as if it does not exist. Our sessions are delivered online, so an after-Iftar or late-evening slot is a scheduling choice rather than a traffic problem.

Can one block of sessions cover both the Chemistry investigation and Paper 2?+

Yes, and it is often the sensible arrangement, because the topics overlap. An investigation built on kinetics, equilibrium or energetics rehearses exactly the quantitative work those written papers test, so an hour spent on uncertainty treatment or on interpreting a gradient pays in both places. We usually run it as one thread with one tutor rather than two separate bookings, with the balance shifting towards papers once the draft is with the school. What we do not do is let paper revision quietly consume the weeks the investigation still needs.

What do Chemistry investigation sessions cost compared with weekly UAE tutoring rates?+

Market rates in the UAE as at October 2026 run from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour for budget online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to beyond 450 for IB and IGCSE specialists, with one premium provider publishing AED 650 and in-home visits at AED 180 to 500 including travel. Those are other providers' published figures, not ours. For an investigation the hourly rate matters less than the hour count, and five or six milestone sessions started early costs well below a twenty-week standing slot.

Does a strong Chemistry investigation mark help with Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed on the certificate a student ends up with, not on individual components, so the investigation matters only through its effect on the final Chemistry grade. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at E. No IB points threshold is quoted here because none has been read on an official Ministry source. Verify your own case through the Ministry's channels.

Start from the deadline, not from the draft

If your child is working on a DP Chemistry investigation anywhere in the UAE, the most useful thing you can do this week is get the school's internal draft deadline in writing and count the actual school evenings left before it. Then read the criteria table above and ask your child which of the four they could not currently evidence. Those two answers tell you whether you need a term of milestone sessions, a block of Higher Level teaching, or one honest conversation about what is still reachable. Book a trial session with a Chemistry specialist and bring the real work: the question, the readings, whatever exists. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and the student keeps the pen throughout.
