IB MYP Tutor in Dubai Production City

An IB MYP tutor in Dubai Production City is most useful when the work is timed to the year rather than to the last report. MYP criteria are assessed at particular points, the Personal Project has a fixed timeline, and the step into DP1 happens in a single summer. IB Gram teaches Production City students one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, planned around those dates.

  • Criteria taught by letter, from the published subject-group descriptors
  • Personal Project support planned to the school's own timeline
  • Timed-paper technique introduced before DP1 demands it
  • Free trial lesson on whatever the student is working on this week

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Production City

The MYP has a calendar, and almost nobody explains it to parents

The Middle Years Programme is assessed continuously, which sounds reassuring and means something quite specific: a student's reported grade is built from criterion scores collected at particular points across the year, using a best-fit judgement at reporting time. That makes the MYP year a sequence of assessment moments rather than a run-up to one examination, and a family that understands the sequence can act before a report rather than after it.

The structure is consistent across the eight subject groups. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each scored out of eight. The criteria are skills rather than topics: in the sciences, Criterion B is inquiring and designing and Criterion C is processing and evaluating; in mathematics, Criterion B is investigating patterns and Criterion C is communicating. A student can know the content thoroughly and score poorly on the criterion that measures how they present it.

That is the most common MYP problem we are asked to fix, and it is a fixable one. Communication marks, not content marks, are where most students in this cluster leave the largest share behind. A student who reads the descriptor for the band above theirs usually sees the gap immediately, which is why the first session in almost every MYP arrangement is spent on the descriptors rather than on the subject.

Then there is the Personal Project, which sits in the final MYP year and has a timeline the school sets. Goal, inquiry, process journal, product and a report, assessed against its own criteria. It is the single largest piece of independent work a student has produced to that point, and it runs alongside everything else, which is why it goes wrong on scheduling more often than on ambition.

Dubai Production City has no IB World School inside it. Students travel to Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park, to the Al Barsha ring, or to Fairgreen International School to the south, and each campus sets its own assessment and Personal Project calendar. Ask for that calendar at the first parents' evening of the year, because it is what actually governs the student's months.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run in India only. Everything here was reviewed in October 2026. We do not publish IB dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated verification; the dates that matter in the MYP are set by the school in any case, and they are the ones to ask for. What we can set out safely is the criterion structure, the conversion to a reported grade and the shape of the Personal Project, all of which are published in documentation your child's school already holds and none of which changes from one year to the next.

At a glance

  • Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria scored one to eight
  • Criteria are skills rather than topics, and are labelled by letter in the subject guides
  • Reported 1-7 grades are converted from criterion totals using published boundaries
  • The Personal Project sits in the final MYP year with a school-set timeline
  • The MYP has no external examination, so timed-paper experience must be built deliberately
  • IB Gram teaches UAE students online one-to-one; UAE home visits are not offered
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages matter here: the years before the final MYP year, the final MYP year with its Personal Project, and the step into the Diploma. Each has a different centre of gravity.

MYPAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Middle Years Programme, earlier years

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, with interdisciplinary units and approaches to learning running alongside. At this stage criterion familiarity is the whole game: a student who understands what Criterion C rewards in each subject will outperform a student with better content knowledge and no descriptor literacy, and the habit transfers everywhere.

Production City students at this age are on early buses out to Dubai Investments Park, Motor City or Al Barsha, home mid-afternoon and often tired. Shorter sessions twice a week work better than one long hour, and the work should be concrete: one criterion, one piece of the student's own work, one specific improvement.

MYP5Ages 15-16 · Years 10-11

Final MYP year and the Personal Project

The final MYP year carries the Personal Project, an extended independent piece with a goal, an inquiry, a process journal, a product and a report assessed against its own criteria. Subject criteria continue alongside it, and some schools also enter students for MYP eAssessment. The year is busy and the Personal Project is the part that slips.

Each Dubai campus sets its own Personal Project deadlines, and they differ by weeks between schools in this cluster. Ask for the full timeline at the start of the year and work backwards from the report deadline, not forwards from the goal, because the process journal has to exist throughout rather than be assembled at the end.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Transition into the Diploma Programme

The Diploma is six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Assessment shifts abruptly from criterion-based continuous judgement to externally examined papers plus one internally assessed component per subject, which is a different game entirely.

Because the MYP has no external examination, a Production City student entering DP1 has usually never sat a three-hour paper. The first Diploma mock then reads as a content failure when it is a pacing and structure failure. The final MYP term is where timed questions and command-term reading should be introduced, before the Diploma does it abruptly in October.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight MYP subject groups, with what the criteria actually measure in each and where students in this cluster most often lose marks. Criterion letters follow the published subject guides your child's school holds.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the one students neglect and the one that prepares them for the Diploma exploration. Communication marks are lost through unexplained working rather than wrong answers.

Sciences

Integrated or by discipline

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Inquiring and designing is where the Diploma investigation is won later, and students lose marks for a method that cannot be followed rather than for a wrong hypothesis.

Individuals and Societies

History, Geography, Economics

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is where the top band sits and where most students stop short, offering description where the descriptor asks for evaluation of sources or perspectives.

Language and Literature

First language

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Analysing marks are lost when a student summarises content instead of examining how the text produces its effect, which is the single most common pattern in this subject group.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Phase placement matters enormously: a student in the wrong phase is either unchallenged or overwhelmed, and the fix is a conversation with the school rather than tutoring.

Arts

Visual, Music, Drama

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and responding marks are lost when reflection describes what was made rather than evaluating the choices made.

Design

Product and Digital Design

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Students over-invest in the product and under-invest in the design cycle documentation, which is where most of the available marks actually sit.

Physical and Health Education

MYP

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written and reflective components surprise families who assumed the subject was practical only, and they are straightforwardly teachable.

The Personal Project

Final MYP year

Assessed on its own criteria covering planning, applying skills, and reflecting, supported by a process journal maintained throughout. The journal cannot be reconstructed at the end, which is the single most common and most avoidable failure in the whole project.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, chosen by where in the MYP the student is. The final MYP year needs a different arrangement from the years before it.

Criterion literacy, weekly

One session a week working on the published descriptors for the subject in question, using the student's own returned work. The student reads the band above theirs, identifies the specific gap, and redrafts one piece to close it. Unspectacular and the most reliable way to move an MYP grade, because most losses are presentation rather than knowledge.

  • Descriptors read directly, not paraphrased by the tutor
  • Work from the student's own returned assessments, not generic exercises
  • One criterion per session, with one concrete improvement identified
  • Short written note on what changed and what to apply next time

Personal Project supervision

Scheduled sessions through the final MYP year, planned backwards from the school's report deadline. The tutor teaches the project criteria, questions whether the goal is achievable in the time available, and checks that the process journal is being maintained as it goes. The tutor does not produce the product, write the report, or contribute content to either.

  • Goal tested for feasibility before weeks are committed to it
  • Process journal checked regularly, because it cannot be reconstructed later
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own drafts
  • Timeline built backwards from the school's report deadline

MYP to DP bridging block

A defined block in the final MYP term and over the summer, introducing the things the Diploma assumes and the MYP never required: timed questions, command-term reading, answer structure against mark bands, and the content prerequisites of the student's chosen Higher Level subjects. Usually eight to twelve sessions and consistently the best-value MYP work we do.

  • Timed short-answer questions introduced before DP1 does it abruptly
  • Command terms taught explicitly, since the MYP uses different language
  • Content prerequisites checked for each chosen Higher Level subject
  • Fixed end date at the start of DP1, with nothing renewing

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Production City

01

The MYP year as a sequence of assessment moments

Because the MYP has no terminal examination, families often assume there is nothing to plan around. There is: a calendar of assessment moments set by the school, in which each criterion in each subject is assessed at particular points, and a reporting judgement made from those scores at particular times. Knowing the sequence is what allows a family to act before a report rather than in response to one.

The practical shape is usually this. Early in the year, each subject assesses the knowledge criterion first, because it is the easiest to set and the content is fresh. Investigation and inquiry criteria arrive next, often with a longer task. Communication is assessed throughout and tends to be the weakest score on the sheet. Reflection and evaluation criteria cluster later, attached to extended pieces of work.

That shape has a consequence for tutoring. A student whose last report showed a weak communication score cannot wait for the topic to come round again, because communication is assessed in almost every task and the next opportunity is a fortnight away. A student with a weak inquiry score has longer, because the next inquiry task may be a term off, and that time should be used on the descriptor rather than on content.

Ask the school for the assessment calendar at the first parents' evening of the year, and ask specifically which criterion each upcoming task will assess. Teachers know and will usually tell you plainly. We plan around that calendar and re-check it every four to six weeks, because in the MYP the tasks move more than the dates do.

Criteria are skills, and the letters are the instruction

The most useful hour we spend with a new MYP student is reading the descriptors with them. Not a summary of the descriptors; the actual published wording from the subject guide their school holds. Students are routinely assessed against criteria they have never read, which is like being marked on a rubric kept in another room.

The letters mean different things in different subject groups, which adds to the confusion. In the sciences, Criterion B is inquiring and designing and Criterion C is processing and evaluating. In mathematics, Criterion B is investigating patterns and Criterion C is communicating. In Individuals and Societies, Criterion D is thinking critically. A student who has learned that Criterion C means communication in maths and assumes the same in science will be answering the wrong instruction.

The pattern in this cluster is clear. Communication and the critical or evaluative criterion carry the largest share of lost marks, and both are presentation skills rather than knowledge. A student who knows the material and cannot lay out reasoning in a form the descriptor rewards will sit a band or two below their understanding, consistently, across every subject.

The method is simple and it works. Take a returned piece of work with its criterion score. Read the descriptor for that band and the descriptor for the band above. Identify the specific difference in words. Redraft that one piece to meet the higher band. Most students see the gap within one session and start applying it without being told, because the descriptors are concrete once they have actually been read.

03

The Personal Project, planned backwards from the report

The Personal Project is the largest independent piece a student has produced by that point, and it is assessed on its own criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, supported by a process journal maintained throughout. Almost every failure we see is a scheduling failure rather than an ambition failure.

The process journal is the specific trap. It is meant to be a record kept as the work happens, showing decisions, setbacks and changes of direction. It cannot be reconstructed at the end, and a journal assembled in the final fortnight reads exactly like one assembled in the final fortnight. Students who maintain it weekly, even briefly, score better on the reflection criterion without any additional work.

Goal feasibility is the second trap. A student chooses a goal that would take a professional three months, discovers in week six that it cannot be finished, and either abandons it or submits something unfinished. Testing the goal against the available hours in week one, honestly, is a single session that saves the project. The project rewards a well-documented process more than an impressive product.

Our role is bounded and stated plainly. We teach what each criterion requires, question whether the goal is achievable, check that the journal is being maintained, and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. We do not produce the product, write any part of the report, or contribute content to either. The line is authorship, and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student's record rather than on ours.

04

Why an MYP report confuses parents, and what to ask

  • Criterion scores are out of eight; the reported grade is 1-7, converted from the total
  • Teachers apply a best-fit judgement rather than averaging every mark
  • Ask which criterion is lowest and what the next band's descriptor says
  • Ask which upcoming task will assess that criterion again
  • Ask what timed assessment happens before DP1, because the MYP sets none

Parents moving from a British or Indian system to the MYP often find the first report unreadable, and that reaction is reasonable. There are criterion scores out of eight, a converted grade out of seven, no percentages, and a best-fit judgement rather than an average. None of that maps onto what they are used to.

The mechanics are these. Each criterion is scored out of eight against published descriptors. The four criterion scores are totalled, and the total is converted to a 1-7 grade using boundaries published in the MYP documentation. Because a teacher applies a best-fit judgement across the evidence rather than averaging every mark ever given, a single poor task does not sink a grade and a single excellent one does not rescue it.

The question to ask at a parents' evening is therefore not what percentage your child is on. It is which criterion is lowest, what the descriptor for the next band up says, and which upcoming task will assess that criterion again. Three questions, all answerable, and together they give a family something to act on rather than a number to worry about.

The second question worth asking in the final MYP year is about Diploma readiness, and specifically about timed work. Because the MYP has no external examination, a student can hold strong criterion scores and still be unprepared for a three-hour paper. Asking what timed assessment the school will run before DP1 begins tells you whether a bridging block is needed.

05

The MYP to DP step, and the term that decides it

  • The Diploma replaces continuous criterion judgement with externally examined papers
  • MYP students rarely have experience of a paper longer than an hour
  • Command terms in the Diploma differ from MYP criterion language
  • Higher Level maths, chemistry and physics assume fluency the MYP does not drill
  • Eight to twelve bridging sessions before DP1 beats the same hours spent after the first mock

The transition from the MYP to the Diploma is the sharpest change in assessment style a student will meet in school, and it happens over one summer. Continuous criterion-based judgement with multiple opportunities is replaced by externally examined papers plus one internally assessed component per subject, under time pressure, with no second attempt.

The specific gap is timed work. An MYP student may never have sat a paper longer than an hour, and the Diploma asks for sustained performance across papers of two and three hours with command terms the MYP does not use. The first DP1 mock therefore reads as a content failure to parents and teachers, when in most cases it is a pacing and structure failure in a student who knows the material.

The second gap is content prerequisites in specific Higher Level subjects. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level assumes algebraic fluency the MYP does not drill to that depth. Chemistry at Higher Level assumes quantitative speed. Physics assumes comfort with rearrangement and units. None of these is a criticism of the MYP; they are simply assumptions the Diploma makes from week one.

So the final MYP term and the summer after it are the highest-value tutoring window in the whole programme. Eight to twelve sessions introducing timed short-answer work, command-term reading, answer structure against mark bands, and the content prerequisites of the student's chosen Higher Levels. It is a defined block with a fixed end at the start of DP1, and it consistently produces more than the same hours spent in DP1 recovering from the first mock.

06

What MYP support costs in Dubai

  • Criterion literacy work sits in the qualified band at AED 150-300 an hour
  • The DP bridging block and Personal Project feedback justify the specialist band
  • Bestimate monthly estimates: AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier
  • Market figures read in October 2026 and attributed, not presented as our prices
  • KHDA confirmed no Dubai private school fee increase for 2026-27 on 22 May 2026

MYP tutoring is cheaper than Diploma tutoring in this market, and it should be, because the work is different. Criterion literacy and redrafting do not require specialist examination knowledge; they require a tutor who will read the published descriptors with the student and hold them to the higher band. That sits comfortably in the qualified subject tutor band rather than the specialist one.

The Dubai bands, read in October 2026 from competitor pages and the Bestimate 2026 rate table. Budget or university-student tutors at AED 45-150, with EdFlik listing AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. Qualified subject tutors online at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists at AED 200-450, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium or examiner-led from AED 500-650. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 budget and AED 600-1,200 mid-tier.

Where the specialist band is genuinely worth paying is the bridging block before DP1, because that requires somebody who knows what the Diploma assumes in a particular subject, and the Personal Project where criterion-level feedback matters. Weekly criterion work in Years 7 to 9 does not need it, and paying specialist rates for it is the standard MYP overspend.

Context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in Dubai private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. These are market figures and not IB Gram prices. We publish no price list here and start with a free trial lesson instead.

07

Honesty, regulators and what to verify

  • A tutor teaches Personal Project criteria and reviews drafts; a tutor never produces the work
  • We do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides or assessment material
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years; no fine schedule is published
  • KHDA inspection reports for Dubai private schools are public and free to read
  • IB Gram is not IB authorised and holds no regulator approval or UAE premises

The Personal Project is where the honesty boundary matters most in the MYP, because it is a discrete deliverable with a deadline and a visible product. A tutor may teach the criteria, question the goal, check the journal is being kept, and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. A tutor may not produce the product, write any part of the report, or contribute content to either. The consequence of crossing that line is an academic honesty finding against the student.

The same applies to subject tasks. Feedback on a student's own draft against a descriptor is teaching. Supplying sentences, rewriting a paragraph to final form, or producing a diagram for them is not. We also do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides or assessment materials, which are copyright; we reference the official source and work from what the school has provided to the student.

On regulation: Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah has SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Individual tutors need the MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with no published fine schedule for working without one.

IB Gram is not IB authorised, KHDA approved or ADEK approved, holds no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is a specific licence for training institutes with physical premises, and has no UAE office. Ask any provider describing itself as IB approved what exactly it means, because an MYP school is authorised by the IB and a tutoring service is not.

08

Starting MYP support at whatever point you are at

  • Send the year group, the subject, and a returned piece of work with criterion scores
  • Free trial lesson spent on that work and the descriptor above it
  • Two shorter weekly sessions usually beat one long one at MYP age
  • Availability given as a date; we do not substitute across subject groups
  • No UAE home visits; home tutoring is an India-only service for us

Send three things: the year group, the subject or subjects, and a returned piece of assessed work with its criterion scores on it. That last item is the one families leave out and the one that makes the first session useful, because the score plus the descriptor is the whole diagnosis.

Then take the free trial lesson, which is a real teaching hour spent on that returned work and the descriptor above it, with a short written note afterwards naming the criterion and the specific gap. No card is held, nothing renews, and if the match is wrong we rematch once at no charge.

On availability, MYP matches are generally quicker than Diploma ones because the pool is wider. Two to three days is normal across most subject groups. Language Acquisition at the higher phases and Arts subjects can take longer. If the specialist is based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time, we say so before you book.

For Production City households, two shorter sessions a week usually work better than one long one at this age, given the bus day. Weekend mornings are better for Personal Project work. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots are a normal request and the slot is held. What we will not do, in IMPZ or anywhere in the UAE, is send a tutor to your address; that service runs in India only. Independent home tutors operate in this community and for a younger child who needs somebody physically present they can be the right answer, which is worth saying plainly rather than arguing against a format we do not offer.

Where we tutor

Where MYP students in this cluster study

Six communities around Production City, noted for which campus sets the assessment calendar and when a student is realistically available. Both matter more than anything about the housing.

Dubai Production City (IMPZ)

No IB campus inside the community. MYP students are typically home mid-afternoon but tired from the bus, so two shorter weekday sessions work better here than one long one.

Dubai Investments Park

Greenfield International School on site runs the IB continuum from primary upwards, so its MYP students have met criterion-based assessment since the Primary Years and are usually fluent in the descriptors.

Al Furjan

Arbor School inside the community is British curriculum, so MYP students from Al Furjan travel. Families here sometimes have one child on MYP and one on IGCSE, which are entirely different assessment systems.

Discovery Gardens

Large and dense. MYP demand here concentrates on Language Acquisition phase work and on mathematics investigating patterns, which is the criterion schools have least time to teach explicitly.

Jebel Ali

Mainly British and Indian curriculum campuses, so MYP students from here are fewer and travel further. Long bus routes push the first realistic weekday session towards six o'clock.

Dubai South and Emaar South

Fairgreen International School to the east is the nearest IB continuum campus. The longest bus day in the cluster, which makes weekend morning sessions the better option for Personal Project work.

Green Community

Inside Dubai Investments Park and a short run from Greenfield, giving it the earliest realistic weekday slot of any community in the cluster.

School ecosystem

Dubai Investments Park and Motor City

The closest campuses to Production City. Greenfield International School runs the IB continuum; the others are British curriculum, which is why households in this ring sometimes run MYP and IGCSE in parallel with different reporting systems and different holidays.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the assessment calendar

Which criterion each upcoming task will assess, and when the reporting points fall. Teachers know and will usually say plainly. In the MYP the tasks move more than the dates do, so we re-check this every four to six weeks and change the plan when the next task changes criterion.

  2. 02

Send returned work with its criterion scores

Not a report summary. A marked task with its criterion score is the whole diagnosis, because the score plus the published descriptor for the band above shows the specific gap in words. Families routinely leave this out, and it is the single most useful thing they can send.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson on that work

A real teaching hour spent reading the descriptor with the student and redrafting one piece to meet the higher band, followed by a short written note naming the criterion and the gap. No card held, nothing renews, and one free rematch if the tutor is not the right fit.

  4. 04

Work one criterion at a time

Not the subject, and not everything at once. One criterion per session, one piece of the student's own work, one concrete improvement they can apply to the next task. Most MYP students see the gap within a session once they have actually read the descriptor rather than a paraphrase of it.

  5. 05

Book the bridging block before DP1

In the final MYP term, eight to twelve sessions introducing timed questions, command-term reading and the content prerequisites of the chosen Higher Level subjects. Fixed end at the start of DP1. This consistently produces more than the same hours spent in DP1 recovering from the first mock.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Descriptors read, not paraphrased

We work from the published subject-guide descriptors the school holds, with the student reading the band above their own score. Students are routinely assessed against criteria they have never read, and simply reading them changes output within a session in most cases.

Criterion letters handled correctly by subject group

Criterion C is communicating in mathematics and processing and evaluating in the sciences. A tutor who treats the letters as universal is teaching the wrong instruction. We match by subject group for this reason, even when the topic looks superficially similar.

Personal Project planned backwards

From the school's report deadline, with the process journal started immediately and the goal tested against available hours in week one. Almost every Personal Project failure is a scheduling failure, and a journal assembled in the final fortnight reads exactly like one assembled in the final fortnight.

The DP step treated as a real transition

The MYP sets no external examination, so a strong MYP student can arrive in DP1 with no experience of a three-hour paper. We build timed work and command-term reading into the final MYP term, before the Diploma does it abruptly in October.

Honest about the band you need

Weekly criterion work does not require a specialist at AED 200-450 an hour, and we say so. The specialist band is worth paying for the DP bridging block and for Personal Project criterion feedback. Paying it for Year 8 descriptor work is the standard MYP overspend in this market.

The boundary on the Personal Project stated plainly

We teach criteria, question the goal, check the journal and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We never produce the product or write any part of the report. The consequence of crossing that line is an academic honesty finding carried by the student.

Student and parent reviews

What students and parents say about working with IB Gram

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Production City: your questions answered

What do the MYP criterion letters actually mean?+

They label skills, and they mean different things in different subject groups, which is the source of most confusion. In the sciences, Criterion B is inquiring and designing and Criterion C is processing and evaluating. In mathematics, Criterion B is investigating patterns and Criterion C is communicating. In Individuals and Societies, Criterion D is thinking critically. Each is scored out of eight against published descriptors in the subject guide your child's school holds. A student who has learned what Criterion C means in one subject and assumes the same elsewhere will be answering the wrong instruction.

How does a score out of eight become a grade out of seven?+

The four criterion scores are totalled, giving a figure out of thirty-two, and that total converts to a 1-7 grade using boundaries published in the MYP documentation. Teachers apply a best-fit judgement across the evidence rather than averaging every mark ever recorded, which is why a single poor task does not sink a grade and a single excellent one does not rescue it. The practical consequence is that consistency matters more than peaks, and that a persistent weak criterion is the thing to attack.

Our MYP report has no percentages. What should we ask at parents' evening?+

Three questions. Which criterion is lowest? What does the descriptor for the next band up say, in its actual wording? And which upcoming task will assess that criterion again? Those three give you something to act on, whereas asking what percentage your child is on gets an answer that does not exist in this system. A fourth question is worth adding in the final MYP year: what timed assessment will the school run before DP1 begins, since the MYP itself sets none.

Why does my son know the content and still get a 4?+

Because the criteria measure how he presents and reasons as well as what he knows, and communication is the criterion most students in this cluster leave marks on. A student who understands the material thoroughly and lays out working without explanation, or writes a conclusion without reference to the evidence, will sit a band or two below his understanding on every task. It is a presentation problem rather than a knowledge problem, which is good news: reading the descriptor for the band above usually shows him the gap within one session.

When should the Personal Project process journal actually start?+

Immediately, in the same week the goal is agreed, and it should be maintained weekly even when entries are brief. The journal is meant to record decisions, setbacks and changes of direction as they happen, and it cannot be reconstructed afterwards: a journal assembled in the final fortnight reads exactly like one assembled in the final fortnight, and the reflection criterion suffers accordingly. Students who keep it as they go score better on reflection without doing any additional work, which makes it the cheapest mark available in the whole project.

How do we judge whether a Personal Project goal is realistic?+

Count the hours honestly. Take the weeks between the goal being agreed and the school's report deadline, subtract exam weeks, holidays and the time the report itself will take, and see what remains. Then ask whether the product could be completed in that, by a student who is also doing eight subjects. Students routinely choose goals that would take a professional three months and discover in week six that it cannot be finished. Testing feasibility in week one is a single session that saves the project.

Does the MYP prepare a student properly for the Diploma?+

For investigation and independent work, very well: MYP students arrive in DP1 able to frame an inquiry, which IGCSE entrants often cannot. For timed examination performance, not at all, because the MYP sets no external examination. A student may never have sat a paper longer than an hour and the Diploma asks for two and three-hour papers using command terms the MYP does not use. That is why the first DP1 mock so often reads as a content failure when it is a pacing and structure failure in a capable student.

What should the final MYP term be used for?+

Timed work and command-term reading, plus the content prerequisites of the chosen Higher Level subjects. Eight to twelve sessions introducing short timed questions, answer structure against mark bands, and whatever the student's Higher Levels assume from week one: algebraic fluency for Analysis and Approaches, quantitative speed for Chemistry, rearrangement and unit confidence for Physics. It is a defined block with a fixed end at the start of DP1, and it consistently achieves more than the same hours spent in DP1 recovering from the first mock.

My daughter is in the wrong Language Acquisition phase. Can tutoring fix that?+

Tutoring can help her cope, but the fix is a conversation with the school rather than extra hours. Language Acquisition runs in phases, and a student placed too low is unchallenged while one placed too high is assessed against descriptors she cannot yet reach, which produces low scores that look like a learning problem and are really a placement problem. Ask the school which phase she is in, what evidence placed her there, and what the process is for review. Then decide whether support is needed at all.

Is an MYP tutor cheaper than a Diploma tutor in Dubai?+

It should be, because the work is different. Criterion literacy and redrafting need a tutor who will read the published descriptors with the student and hold them to the band above, which sits in the qualified subject tutor band of roughly AED 150-300 an hour rather than the IB specialist band of AED 200-450. Where the specialist band is genuinely worth paying is the bridging block before DP1 and Personal Project criterion feedback. Paying specialist rates for Year 8 descriptor work is the standard overspend we see at this stage.

What may a tutor legitimately do with my son's Personal Project drafts?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor can teach what each criterion requires, question whether the goal is achievable in the time available, check that the process journal is being maintained, and give feedback on report drafts the student wrote. A tutor cannot produce the product, write any part of the report, contribute content to either, or make the design decisions. The test is authorship, and the consequence of crossing it is an academic honesty finding against the student rather than against anyone else.

Which MYP criterion is most often neglected by students?+

Investigating patterns in mathematics and inquiring and designing in the sciences, because both attach to longer tasks that feel optional next to content revision. They are also the two that prepare a student directly for the Diploma exploration and the scientific investigation, so neglecting them costs twice: once in the MYP grade and again two years later. The practical move is to work on the descriptor before the extended task begins, since the next opportunity to be assessed on that criterion may be a full term away.

How often should MYP sessions run for a Production City student?+

Two shorter sessions a week usually beat one long one at this age. Students here bus out to Dubai Investments Park, Motor City or Al Barsha and arrive home mid-afternoon tired, and thirty to forty focused minutes on one criterion and one piece of their own work achieves more than an hour of diminishing attention. Weekend mornings are better for Personal Project work, which needs sustained thought. During Ramadan, post-Iftar slots are a normal request and we hold the slot rather than dropping it.

Do you visit homes in IMPZ for MYP sessions?+

No. IB Gram delivers all UAE lessons as one-to-one live video, and home visiting is a service we run in India only. For MYP work the online format is practical rather than compromised: descriptors and the student's own returned work are read on screen together, and the written note after each session records the criterion and the gap. Independent home tutors do work in this area at roughly AED 180-350 an hour on published Dubai market rates, and for a younger child needing supervision they can be the better choice.

Which schools near Dubai Production City run the MYP?+

There is no IB World School inside the community itself. Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park is the nearest IB continuum campus, and Fairgreen International School serves the southern corridor. Beyond that, families use the Al Barsha ring, including Dubai International Academy Al Barsha and GEMS World Academy Dubai. Each sets its own assessment calendar and its own Personal Project timeline, and those differ by weeks between campuses, which is why we ask which school before planning anything. We name these as context and have no affiliation with any of them.

Read the descriptor, then plan the year

Two things make MYP support work. The first is reading the published descriptor for the band above your child's current score, with their own returned work in front of you, because that turns a vague grade into a specific sentence to act on. The second is knowing when each criterion gets assessed again, which the school will tell you if asked. Add the Personal Project timeline in the final year and a bridging block before DP1, and the programme stops being opaque. Send a returned task with its criterion scores and take a free trial lesson.
