IB MYP Tutor in Jebel Ali

Most parents hiring an IB MYP tutor in Jebel Ali are holding a report they cannot read: four lettered criteria, each marked out of eight, and no percentage anywhere. This page explains what those letters assess, what a 5 out of 8 actually means, and what the Personal Project needs. IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, online on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Criterion reports read letter by letter against the published descriptors
  • Eight subject groups covered, matched by subject rather than by year
  • Personal Project coaching on the student's own work only
  • Live one-to-one online lessons; free diagnostic trial first

What an MYP report is telling you, and why it does not feel like one

A parent in Jebel Ali who grew up with percentages opens an MYP report and finds something else entirely. Four letters per subject - A, B, C and D - each carrying a mark out of eight, and a final grade from 1 to 7 derived from the total. No percentage, no class rank, and a comment that describes the criteria rather than the child. The natural reaction is to ask whether 5 out of 8 is good, and the honest answer is that it depends which criterion in which subject.

That is not an evasion. The four criteria assess genuinely different things, and they differ by subject group. In the sciences, one criterion covers knowledge and understanding while another covers inquiring and designing; in mathematics, one covers investigating patterns and another covers applying mathematics in real-life contexts; in language and literature, the criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text and using language. A 5 in a criterion about designing an investigation describes a different gap from a 5 in a criterion about knowledge recall.

So the first useful thing a tutor does for an MYP family is read the report properly: find the descriptor for the criterion that scored lowest, in that subject, and compare it against the work the student actually produced. That single comparison usually identifies the gap more precisely than a term of general subject practice, because the descriptors are specific about what the next band requires.

The second useful thing is to look at the whole profile rather than the lowest number. A student scoring well on knowledge criteria and poorly on inquiry or communication criteria across several subjects does not have a subject problem; they have a transferable skills problem, and it will follow them into the Diploma where it costs more. The MYP's approaches-to-learning framework exists precisely to name those skills, and it is rarely used by families as the diagnostic tool it is.

Jebel Ali's geography is why this page also talks about delivery. The district sits at the industrial western edge of Dubai, with its residential communities spread through Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investments Park, Green Community, Dubai South and Emaar South. The schools running an IB continuum here are few, so the local supply of tutors who have ever read an MYP criterion report is thin. IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time, and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

What follows is the criteria explained by subject group, how to read a report, what the Personal Project actually requires, the approaches-to-learning skills worth working on directly, the step into the Diploma or IGCSE, and the AED market bands with their sources.

At a glance

  • Four criteria per subject, each out of 8, totalling 32 and converted to a 1-7 grade
  • The criteria differ by subject group, so the same number means different things
  • A pattern of low inquiry or communication marks is a skills problem, not a subject one
  • The Personal Project in MYP 5 has its own criteria and its own deadlines
  • No IB Gram home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring runs only in India
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The MYP spans five years and changes character as it goes. The requests we receive from this catchment cluster in three places, and they are different problems with different remedies.

MYP1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP 1 to 3, the early years

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four lettered criteria out of eight. Inquiry-led teaching organised around global contexts and key concepts, with interdisciplinary units linking subjects. There is no external examination, so the record of these three years is a sequence of criterion judgements rather than test scores.

This is where gaps form invisibly. A student can progress through MYP 2 and 3 with reasonable criterion scores while arithmetic fluency and writing stamina quietly fail to develop, because neither is examined under time pressure. Families in Al Furjan and Green Community who intervene here spend a term; those who wait until MYP 5 spend a year.

MYP4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP 4 and 5, the decision years

Subject choices narrow, the Personal Project arrives in MYP 5, and some schools enter students for optional on-screen eAssessments and ePortfolios leading to the IB MYP Certificate. These two years also carry the decision about what comes next: the IB Diploma, the Career-related Programme, or a move to an IGCSE and A Level route.

In this catchment the decision is a live one rather than a formality, because both IB and UK-curriculum sixth forms are available locally. That makes MYP 4 the right year to find out whether a student's criterion profile predicts Diploma success, and to work on the specific skills the Diploma will assume.

PPAges 15-16 · MYP 5

The Personal Project

An independent project of the student's own choosing, with a product or outcome, a process journal and a report, assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight. It is the MYP's culminating piece of independent work and the closest thing in the programme to the Diploma's Extended Essay.

The Personal Project is where MYP 5 students in this catchment lose marks they did not need to lose, and almost always for the same reason: the process journal is reconstructed near the deadline rather than kept as the work happened. The criteria reward evidence of process, and a journal written in retrospect cannot supply it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

What the MYP leads into

The IB Diploma takes six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, graded out of 45. The alternative within this catchment is an IGCSE and A Level route at a UK-curriculum school. Both make assumptions about what an MYP student arrives able to do.

The gap that matters is not content. It is notation discipline, timed written work and formal mathematical fluency, none of which the MYP requires at speed. Students who were strong on investigation criteria frequently find the first Diploma term harder than their MYP record predicted, and that is a preparation problem rather than a capability one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the eight MYP subject groups with what the criteria broadly assess in each, and the place marks are most often left on the table in this catchment. Criterion labels vary by subject, so always read your child's own subject guide descriptors.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowledge and understanding, investigating patterns, communication, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The investigating criterion is where strong calculators lose marks, because it asks for a general rule to be found, justified and tested rather than a correct answer.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The design criterion rewards a method another person could replicate, which is a writing skill as much as a scientific one.

Language and literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text and using language. The commonest loss is paraphrase where analysis of technique and effect was wanted, which is the same habit that later costs marks on Diploma English Paper 1.

Language acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Phase placement matters more than year group, and a student in the wrong phase will look weak when they are simply misplaced.

Individuals and societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Source evaluation is where marks concentrate, and students who summarise sources rather than weighing them cap themselves regardless of content knowledge.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. Documentation carries the marks: a good final product with a thin design folder scores below a modest product with evidenced development.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. As in Design, the process journal is assessed, so students who work intensively but document nothing lose marks the work itself earned.

Physical and health education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The planning and reflecting criteria are written work, which surprises families who assume the subject is entirely practical.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Criteria cover planning, applying skills and reflecting, each out of eight. The process journal is the evidence base for all three, and a journal reconstructed near the deadline cannot evidence a process that was not recorded.

Approaches to learning skills

MYP 1-5, across all subjects

Communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills, taught across subjects rather than in one. A low criterion profile that repeats across several subjects is usually one of these rather than several subject gaps.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats. The right one depends on whether the report shows a subject gap, a skills pattern across subjects, or a Personal Project deadline.

Criterion-targeted subject work

Weekly sessions aimed at the specific criterion the report shows as weakest, in one subject group, working from the published descriptor rather than from the textbook. The tutor shows the student what the next band actually requires and then has them produce work at that level.

  • Descriptor for the weak criterion read together, in plain words
  • Student work compared against the descriptor, not against a mark
  • Follows the school's unit sequence and global context
  • Written note after each session naming the criterion worked on

Approaches-to-learning skills blocks

Short blocks for a student whose low criterion marks repeat across several subjects. The work is self-management, research and thinking skills - planning a piece of extended writing, taking usable notes, evaluating a source - taught directly rather than hoped for.

  • Extended writing planned before it is written
  • Note-taking and research skills practised on real school tasks
  • Source evaluation drilled using the student's own subjects
  • Deadlines mapped backwards by the student, not for them

Personal Project process coaching

Sessions running alongside the project, focused on keeping a real process journal and understanding what the planning, applying-skills and reflecting criteria actually reward. The student plans, makes and writes everything; the tutor questions, explains criteria and marks drafts.

  • Journal kept as the work happens, not reconstructed
  • Goal narrowed until it is achievable and evidenceable
  • Each criterion read against the student's own draft report
  • No drafting, rewriting or completion by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jebel Ali

01

Reading a criterion report: what 5 out of 8 actually tells you

An MYP criterion mark is a judgement against a written descriptor, not a percentage of questions answered correctly. Each criterion is marked out of eight, and the eight marks are grouped into bands, each band described in words. A 5 means the student's work matched the description of that band. The descriptor for the band above says, in specific language, what the work would need to do differently.

That is the whole diagnostic, and it is far more useful than a percentage would be. A percentage tells you how much was wrong; a descriptor tells you what kind of thing was missing. If the next band asks for a general rule to be justified rather than stated, the student knows exactly what to add. If it asks for evaluation of sources rather than summary, the same. Families who ask the school for the descriptors rather than for a clearer comment usually find the answer immediately.

The four marks together total 32 and are converted into a 1 to 7 subject grade using published boundaries, which is why two students with the same final grade can have quite different profiles. One may be even across all four criteria; the other may be strong on knowledge and weak on inquiry. The second student has the more urgent problem, because inquiry and communication skills transfer into every subject and into the Diploma.

So the useful first question is not which subject is lowest but whether the same criterion type is low in several subjects at once. Low knowledge marks in two subjects is two content problems. Low communication or inquiry marks in four subjects is one skills problem wearing four costumes, and it is both cheaper and more valuable to fix.

02

The eight subject groups, and where each one quietly loses marks

The MYP's eight subject groups each have four criteria, and the criteria are subject-specific even where the names sound similar. That specificity is why a tutor who has taught the subject but never read its MYP descriptors will miss the actual gap. They will teach content, which is usually not the problem.

Mathematics is the clearest example. A student can be fluent and accurate and still score poorly on the investigating-patterns criterion, because that criterion asks for a general rule to be found, justified and then tested against further cases. Arriving at the right answer is not the task. Similarly, the real-life-contexts criterion asks for a model to be applied and its limitations discussed, and a correct calculation with no discussion of the model scores below what the student knows.

In the sciences, the design criterion rewards a method another person could replicate: variables identified, controls stated operationally, apparatus specified. Many students write a method that works for them and would not work for a stranger, and lose marks they never see as marks. In Design and the Arts, the process journal is assessed directly, so a student who works hard and documents nothing has done the work and not the assessment.

In language and literature the recurring loss is paraphrase instead of analysis, which is worth naming early because it is the same habit that costs marks on Diploma English Paper 1 three years later. In individuals and societies it is source summary instead of source evaluation. In language acquisition it is often not a weakness at all but a phase placement issue, where a student sitting in the wrong phase reads as struggling.

03

The Personal Project, and the journal that decides it

  • Keep a rough journal weekly from the start; retrospective accounts lose marks
  • Narrow the goal until it is achievable with the time and resources available
  • Record decisions and obstacles, not just progress
  • Read each criterion descriptor before writing the report, not after
  • Every word of the report must be typed by the student

The Personal Project in MYP 5 is assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight, with a product or outcome, a process journal and a report. It is the MYP's culminating independent work, and it is the closest thing the programme offers to the Diploma's Extended Essay in both character and failure mode.

The failure mode is the journal. All three criteria draw their evidence from the process, and a journal written in the fortnight before the deadline cannot evidence a process that was not recorded as it happened. Students reconstruct plausibly, the report reads smoothly, and the marks fall short because what the criteria reward - decisions made, obstacles met, approaches changed - has been smoothed into a narrative. Keeping even a rough weekly entry from the start outperforms an elegant retrospective account.

The second failure is scope. A goal that cannot be achieved in the available time with the available resources produces a project that is either unfinished or quietly downgraded halfway through, and in both cases the reflecting criterion suffers because the student is defending a decision rather than evaluating a process. Narrowing the goal early is the highest-value intervention a tutor can make, and it takes one session.

The boundary is the same as everywhere in the IB and it is worth restating for a 15-year-old's first big independent piece. A tutor may question the goal, explain what each criterion rewards, teach a skill the project needs, discuss how to keep a usable journal, and read the draft report against the descriptors. A tutor may not plan it, make it, write it or edit it to completion. Every word of the report must be the student's own.

04

Approaches to learning: the skills behind a repeating low mark

The MYP names five categories of approaches-to-learning skills - communication, social, self-management, research and thinking - and expects them to be taught across subjects rather than in a timetabled slot. Because they belong to nobody in particular, they are the skills most likely to go unaddressed, and they are the usual explanation for a criterion profile that is low in the same way across several subjects.

Self-management is the one that shows up most in this catchment. A student who cannot plan a two-week task backwards from its deadline produces rushed work in every subject, and the criteria notice. The fix is not a conversation about effort; it is a repeated exercise in mapping a real school task backwards, with the student doing the mapping, until they do it unprompted.

Research skills come second. Finding sources is easy; judging them is not, and the thinking-critically and investigating criteria across several subject groups reward judgement. A student who collects six sources and summarises each in turn has researched and not evaluated. Practising evaluation on the student's own current assignments, rather than on a worked example, is what makes it transfer.

Communication is the third, and it is the one with the longest tail. A student whose good thinking is hard to follow loses marks in the MYP and goes on losing them in the Diploma, where structure is marked explicitly in almost every subject. Working on structure in MYP 3 or 4 is cheap. Working on it in the second Diploma year, alongside six subjects and the core, is not.

05

From the MYP into the Diploma or into IGCSE: the real gap

Families in this catchment face a genuine choice at 16, because both routes exist locally: the IB Diploma at one of the area's IB schools, or an IGCSE and A Level path at a UK-curriculum school. The MYP prepares students well for one half of either and leaves a predictable gap in the other half.

What the MYP builds well is inquiry, independent work, extended writing with a purpose and comfort with criteria-based assessment. A student coming out of a good MYP programme is usually better at designing an investigation and writing a reflective evaluation than a student arriving from a purely examined system. That is real and it pays in the Diploma's internally assessed components and in the Extended Essay.

What the MYP does not require is speed under timed conditions, formal mathematical notation, or recall at volume. There is no external paper in most MYP years, so a student may reach MYP 5 having never written anything substantial against a clock. Both the Diploma and IGCSE assume that from the first term, and the first set of Diploma or Year 10 results frequently reflects the shock rather than the ability.

The practical preparation is therefore narrow and specific: timed written work, formal notation discipline in mathematics, and recall practice. None of it needs to wait for a school to teach it. A MYP 5 student in Al Furjan or Green Community who spends a term writing to a clock and rearranging equations by hand arrives at the Diploma with the gap already closed, and that is the single most useful thing tutoring does at this stage.

What MYP tutoring costs in Dubai, and what is worth paying for

Published Dubai figures, read October 2026 and attributed to whoever published them. Tutopiya advertises from about AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65, both online. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200 online. Dubai rate guidance puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350, with independent home tutors advertising to AED 500. Specialists are published at AED 200-450 and above, TutorChase quotes around AED 270, and BartyED publishes AED 650.

The MYP is the stage where the entry band deserves a fairer hearing than it gets elsewhere. For MYP 1 to 3, where the task is often arithmetic fluency, reading stamina or sitting down to work at all, a capable and patient tutor at the lower end of the market can be genuinely good value. The expensive specialist adds less here than they will in two years.

What changes the calculation is criteria literacy. A tutor who has never read an MYP descriptor will teach content, and content is frequently not what the report is pointing at. For MYP 4 and 5, for the Personal Project, and for any report showing a repeated low criterion across subjects, the specialist band is where the useful people are, because the work is interpretive rather than instructional.

Read it by the term, which is how school deadlines actually arrive. Dubai rate guidance estimates one weekly hour at roughly AED 240-600 a month at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000-2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support - so a three-month term comes to AED 720-1,800, AED 1,800-3,600 and AED 3,000-6,000 or more respectively. Lined up that way the trade is plain: one term at the specialist end costs about what several terms cost at the entry end, and it is worth paying only where reading the criterion is the real problem rather than the content behind it. Advertised packages sit between the two, around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits, the second of which is pricing the drive out to Jebel Ali at least as much as the teaching. None of these are IB Gram prices; our fee is quoted after the free trial lesson.

Online one-to-one for an MYP student, with the limitations named

The format suits MYP work because so much of it is document work: a criterion descriptor beside a piece of the student's own writing, a process journal read together, a method rewritten so a stranger could follow it. A shared screen with both people annotating is better for that than a single paper copy across a table.

The age range is where honesty is needed. For MYP 4 and 5, online one-to-one works essentially as well as in person. For MYP 1 and 2, it depends entirely on the child. An 11-year-old who will settle at a desk and engage with a screen does fine; one who needs an adult physically present to begin and to stay started does better with someone in the room, and no amount of good teaching compensates for that.

IB Gram offers no home visits in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and this page states that rather than leaving it to be discovered, because two providers ranking for UAE searches route parents to an Indian phone number without disclosing that delivery is remote. If your MYP 1 child needs a person in the room, hire locally - and ask the tutor whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit before the first lesson.

The other practical limitations: a weak home connection shortens the hour regardless of the clock, and a shared study space, common in Discovery Gardens apartments, undermines any lesson because the tutor cannot manage the room. Both are worth testing before committing to a term rather than discovering in week three.

08

Permits, honesty and how to start

  • MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years
  • Do not engage your child's own class teacher for paid private tuition
  • No KHDA, ADEK, MoE or IB approval claimed, because we hold none
  • Send the criterion report plus one piece of marked work to start
  • If no specialist is free at your hour, we say so rather than substituting

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE, and the UAE government states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule, so treat any quoted amount as unverified.

One arrangement to avoid: paid private tuition from your own child's class teacher. The permit carries a code of conduct, and ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff are reported as barring paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Dubai sits under KHDA rather than ADEK, but the principle is the same and the permit's conditions apply across the country.

What we do not claim: IB Gram is not KHDA approved, a KHDA Educational Services Permit being a licence issued to training institutes with physical premises that we neither hold nor occupy. We claim no ADEK, MoE, MoHRE or IB accreditation or partnership, publish no self-asserted ratings, promise no grade or criterion improvement, and quote no statistic without its source and date. On the MYP specifically, we do not write, rewrite or complete any part of a Personal Project or any assessed task.

To start, send the subject group, the year, the school, and a photograph of the most recent criterion report - ideally with one piece of the student's marked work. The report alone tells us which criterion is low; the work tells us why. A specialist then teaches a free one-to-one trial lesson online, built on that work, and writes up what the criterion descriptor and the work together showed. The note is yours whether or not you continue, and if no suitable specialist has a slot at your hour we say so and offer alternatives.

Where we tutor

Where MYP families in this catchment live

These communities share the Jebel Ali school catchment. IB continuum provision here is concentrated in a few schools, which is why local tutors who have read an MYP criterion report are scarce.

Jebel Ali Village

Low-rise housing beside the port and free zone. Most children here attend UK or Indian curriculum schools, so an MYP family is often the only one on the street.

Al Furjan

Metro-connected villas and townhouses. MYP 4 and 5 requests dominate here, usually tied to the Diploma-or-A-Level decision rather than to a single weak subject.

Discovery Gardens

Dense apartments with very mixed home languages. Language acquisition phase placement is a recurring question, because a misplaced phase reads as weakness on a report.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds the catchment's main IB continuum capacity, so the majority of MYP students in this cluster are in or near this postcode.

Green Community

Villas and low-rise apartments with the shortest school run in the cluster, and a short walk or drive to the area's IB provision.

The Sustainable City

A planned low-energy community with its own IB school, and a distinct MYP cohort whose interdisciplinary units often connect to the community's own systems.

Dubai South

Large, new and spread out around the Expo site and Al Maktoum airport. Families here drive outward for IB provision rather than inward.

Emaar South

Golf-course villas deep inside Dubai South. A 20 to 30 minute school run each way means evening in-home tutoring starts late enough to be of limited use.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jebel Ali

IB continuum provision serving this catchment

These are the schools running MYP in or near the Jebel Ali catchment. Cohorts are small, which means a year group's experience of a subject group can rest on one or two teachers, and it also means very few local tutors have MYP criteria experience.

  • Fairgreen International School, The Sustainable City
  • Sunmarke School, Al Furjan

The surrounding non-IB school set

Most children in this catchment attend UK, Indian, American or SABIS schools. That matters to an MYP family in a practical way: neighbours comparing reports are describing a completely different assessment system.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion report and one piece of work

The report tells us which criterion is low; a piece of the student's marked work tells us why. Together they usually locate the gap in one session, which a conversation about the term cannot do.

  2. 02

Read the descriptor, not the number

The published descriptor for the band above names what the work must do differently. That comparison is the diagnostic, and it is more specific than any percentage would be. We do it with the student present rather than about them.

  3. 03

Decide: subject gap or skills pattern

Low knowledge marks in one or two subjects is a content problem. The same criterion type low across four subjects is an approaches-to-learning problem, and one skills tutor beats four subject tutors for it.

  4. 04

    Free diagnostic trial lesson online

A real one-to-one lesson with the matched specialist, built on the work you sent, ending in a written note of what the descriptor and the work together showed. No card details and nothing to commit to beforehand.

  5. 05

Weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

The same tutor at the same hour each week, following the school's unit sequence. Slots shift for Ramadan, the Personal Project deadline and any eAssessment period as a calendar change rather than a renegotiation.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We read criterion reports for a living

The local supply of tutors who have ever seen an MYP descriptor is thin in this catchment, because IB continuum provision here is concentrated in a few schools. Criteria literacy is what we match for, not just subject knowledge.

Skills patterns identified before subjects are bought

A criterion profile that is low in the same way across several subjects is one approaches-to-learning problem, not four subject problems. Naming that first saves families from hiring three tutors for one gap.

The Personal Project treated as a process

All three criteria draw their evidence from the journal, and a journal reconstructed near the deadline cannot supply it. We start with journal discipline and scope, which are the two things that decide the mark.

Transition gaps closed before they cost anything

The MYP does not require timed writing, formal notation or recall at volume, and both the Diploma and IGCSE assume all three. A term of specific preparation in MYP 5 is cheaper than a term of catch-up afterwards.

Honest about the youngest students

For MYP 1 and 2, a child who needs an adult in the room to begin work is better served in person, and we say so rather than taking the booking. IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE.

Figures and rules cited, never asserted

AED bands are attributed to their publishers with the month we read them, the permit position comes from u.ae and MoHRE, and we claim no regulator approval because we hold none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jebel Ali: your questions answered

Is 5 out of 8 a good MYP criterion mark?+

It depends which criterion in which subject, and that is a real answer rather than an evasion. Each criterion is marked against a written descriptor, and a 5 means the work matched one band's description. The useful step is to read the descriptor for the band above: it states specifically what the work would need to do differently, whether that is justifying a general rule, writing a replicable method, or evaluating sources rather than summarising them. Ask the school for the descriptors rather than for a clearer comment.

How do the 32 criterion marks turn into a 1 to 7 MYP subject grade?+

Because MYP assessment is criterion-referenced rather than norm-referenced. Each subject has four criteria, each marked out of eight against a written descriptor, totalling 32, which is then converted into a 1 to 7 subject grade using published boundaries. A percentage would tell you how much was wrong; a descriptor tells you what kind of thing was missing, which is more actionable. The consequence is that two students with the same final grade can have very different profiles, and the profile matters more than the grade.

My child is strong in maths but scores low on investigating patterns. Why?+

Because that criterion is not assessing calculation. It asks for a pattern to be explored, a general rule to be found and expressed, that rule to be justified, and then tested against further cases. A fluent student who reaches the correct answer quickly has often done none of those four things in writing. The fix is specific rather than remedial: practise producing the general rule and the justification as written work, every time, until it becomes the expected shape of an answer rather than an optional extra.

What does the MYP Personal Project actually need from a student?+

A product or outcome, a process journal and a report, assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, each marked out of eight. The journal is the critical piece, because all three criteria draw their evidence from the process. A journal reconstructed in the fortnight before the deadline reads smoothly and cannot evidence decisions, obstacles and changes of approach that were never recorded. A rough weekly entry kept from the start outperforms an elegant retrospective account every time.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project without doing it for them?+

Yes, and the useful help is mostly questioning rather than teaching. A tutor can challenge whether the goal is achievable with the time and resources available, explain what each criterion rewards, teach a specific skill the project needs, show the student how to keep a journal that will actually evidence their process, and read the draft report against the descriptors. A tutor cannot plan it, make it, write it or edit it to completion. Every word of the report must be typed by the student.

My child's criterion marks are low in the same way across four subjects. What is that?+

Almost certainly one approaches-to-learning problem rather than four subject problems. The MYP names five skill categories - communication, social, self-management, research and thinking - and because they are taught across subjects rather than in a timetabled slot, they are the skills most likely to go unaddressed. Self-management and research skills are the usual culprits: a student who cannot plan a two-week task backwards produces rushed work everywhere. One skills tutor is both cheaper and more useful than four subject tutors for this.

How well does the MYP prepare a student for the IB Diploma?+

Well in one half and predictably poorly in the other. The MYP builds inquiry, independent work, extended purposeful writing and comfort with criteria-based assessment, all of which pay in the Diploma's internally assessed components and the Extended Essay. What it does not require is writing against a clock, formal mathematical notation at speed, or recall at volume, and both the Diploma and IGCSE assume all three from the first term. A term of timed writing and manual manipulation in MYP 5 closes most of the gap.

Should a Jebel Ali MYP 5 student choose the Diploma or an A Level route?+

Both are available in this catchment without moving house, which makes it a genuine decision rather than a formality. The criterion profile is useful evidence: a student who scores well on inquiry, communication and reflection criteria usually suits the Diploma, where internally assessed components and the Extended Essay reward exactly those. A student strong on knowledge criteria and weaker on the others may do better with three or four A Levels in depth. Read each school's published entry requirements before deciding, and treat predicted grades as the constraint they are.

Does my child need to sit the MYP eAssessments?+

That depends on the school rather than on your child. Some schools enter MYP 5 students for optional on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the IB MYP Certificate, and others do not. Ask the school directly whether it enters candidates, for which subjects, and when the components fall, because the answer changes the shape of the MYP 5 year considerably. Where a school does enter students, the preparation is largely timed on-screen writing, which is the same skill the Diploma will assume afterwards.

Why does my child's language acquisition mark look weak?+

Before assuming a weakness, check the phase. Language acquisition in the MYP runs across phases rather than year groups, and a student placed in a phase above their current level reads as struggling when they are simply misplaced, while one placed below coasts and stops progressing. Phase placement is a school decision and it can be reviewed. This comes up frequently in the apartment communities in this catchment, where home languages are very mixed and a child's spoken fluency and written accuracy can sit at different phases.

Is online tutoring suitable for an MYP 1 student in Jebel Ali?+

It depends on the child, and we would rather say so than take every booking. For MYP 4 and 5 online one-to-one works essentially as well as in person, because the work is document-based: a descriptor beside a piece of writing, a journal read together. For MYP 1 and 2, a child who will settle at a desk and engage with a screen does fine, while one who needs an adult physically present to begin and stay started does better in person. IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE.

What should we work on between MYP 3 and MYP 4?+

Fluency and structure, in that order, because both are cheap now and expensive later. Arithmetic and algebraic manipulation done by hand, at speed, accurately, since the MYP does not require it under time pressure and everything after the MYP does. Then structure in extended writing: planning a piece before writing it, so that good thinking becomes thinking a reader can follow. Communication marks that are low in MYP 3 tend to stay low through the Diploma, where structure is marked explicitly in nearly every subject.

How many subjects should we tutor at once in the MYP?+

One, in most cases, and sometimes none at all in the sense parents expect. If the criterion profile shows one subject genuinely low on knowledge criteria, that is one subject tutor. If the same criterion type is low across several subjects, the right purchase is a skills block rather than several subject tutors, and it will improve all of them. Starting with three MYP subject tutors is the commonest overspend we see from this catchment, and the criterion report usually shows why it was unnecessary.

Do MYP sessions need to change during Ramadan?+

The hour moves and the content usually does not. School hours shorten during Ramadan and households reorganise their evening around iftar, so a weekday 5pm slot typically becomes early afternoon or post-iftar for the month. For MYP students the thing worth protecting is the writing habit rather than the content pace: a shorter session that still produces a written piece holds more than a longer discussion. Because nobody is travelling to your address, moving a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation of a commute.

Send the criterion report and one piece of work

If you are looking for an IB MYP tutor in Jebel Ali, the two documents that matter are the criterion report and one piece of your child's marked work. The report shows which of the four criteria is low; the work shows why, when read against the published descriptor for the band above. A specialist in that subject group reads both, tells you whether this is a subject gap or an approaches-to-learning pattern repeating across subjects, and teaches a free one-to-one trial lesson online at a Gulf Standard Time hour that works from Jebel Ali, Al Furjan, Green Community or The Sustainable City.
