IGCSE Science Tutor in Jebel Ali

Hiring an IGCSE science tutor in Jebel Ali starts with a question most parents have never been asked: is your child taking three separate sciences, a coordinated double award, or a single combined science? Those are three different qualifications counting for different numbers of certificates. IB Gram matches to the actual code and teaches live, one-to-one, online on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Separate, coordinated and combined science routes compared properly
  • Matched to the code - 0620, 0625, 0610, 0654, 4SD0 - not to "science"
  • Live one-to-one online; practicals stay in the school laboratory
  • Free diagnostic trial lesson built on a marked paper

IB & IGCSE in Jebel Ali

Three ways to sit IGCSE science, and they are not interchangeable

A parent in Al Furjan and a parent in Jebel Ali Village can both say their child is taking IGCSE science and mean quite different things. One child may be sitting Biology, Chemistry and Physics as three separate qualifications. Another may be on a coordinated or double-award route that covers all three and counts as two certificates. A third may be on a single combined science award counting as one. The content depth, the paper count and the number of certificates all differ.

That difference has consequences beyond the timetable. The number of IGCSE certificates matters for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency, where the published British-track rule requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. A student on a single combined award has one science certificate towards that five; a student taking three separate sciences has three.

It also decides what tutoring can usefully do. Three separate sciences at Extended level is a heavy load with deep content in each; one specialist cannot carry all three well and should not pretend to. A combined award is broad and shallow, and the failure mode is different: breadth without the depth to answer a six-mark question. Hiring a tutor for "science" without knowing which of these you have is the most common expensive mistake in this subject.

Then there is the board. Cambridge runs separate sciences as Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625, with coordinated and combined alternatives such as Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, Combined Science 0653 and Physical Science 0652. Pearson Edexcel runs separate sciences as 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 alongside double and single award routes. Topic coverage diverges between boards, and the practical assessment is handled differently.

Geography is why this page also compares delivery. Jebel Ali sits at the industrial western edge of Dubai, with its residential communities spread through Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investments Park, Green Community, Dubai South and Emaar South. Three separate-science tutors visiting one household is three journeys. One of those tutors existing at all, within driving distance of Emaar South on a weekday evening, is already optimistic.

IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Laboratory work stays at school under the teacher's supervision, as the specification requires. What follows is the route comparison, the board comparison, where marks go in each science, the AED bands with their sources, and the calendar counted backwards. Read it with the exam entry statement and one marked science paper beside you, because those two documents answer most of the questions a first phone call would otherwise take twenty minutes to establish.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four science configurations appear across the schools serving this catchment. Each one implies a different tutoring plan, and the exam entry statement is what tells you which you have.

SEPARATEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Three separate sciences

Biology, Chemistry and Physics entered as three qualifications, three certificates and three sets of papers. Cambridge codes 0610, 0620 and 0625; Pearson codes 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The deepest route, usually taken by students heading for A Level or IB Diploma sciences, and the heaviest in content volume.

Within this catchment, students on three separate sciences at Extended level carry the largest content load of any configuration. The practical consequence for tutoring is that one tutor should not cover all three: chemistry mechanism and mole work, physics rearrangement, and biology command-term discipline are different competencies with different mark schemes.

COORDINATEDAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Coordinated or double-award science

All three sciences covered in a single integrated course counting as two certificates. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 and Pearson's double-award route are the usual forms. Content is less deep than the separate sciences but broader than a single award, and papers cover all three disciplines together.

This is the middle route many UAE schools use to keep A Level and IB Diploma science doors open without the timetable cost of three subjects. It is generally accepted for progression, but check each sixth form's stated entry requirement directly rather than assuming equivalence with separate sciences.

COMBINEDAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined or single-award science

All three sciences in one qualification counting as a single certificate. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 and Physical Science 0652 are examples; Pearson runs a single-award route. The lightest content load, and the route with the clearest constraint on progression into Diploma or A Level sciences.

The certificate count is the detail families miss. One science certificate contributes one subject towards the five the Ministry of Education requires for British-track equivalency, so a student on a single award needs the remaining four from elsewhere on their timetable. That is worth checking in Year 10 rather than in Year 12.

AFTER16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

What follows at 16

A Level sciences, or IB Diploma sciences at Higher or Standard Level. Both publish entry requirements, and science entry grades are usually among the higher ones on the list because the step up in the first term is steep.

Both routes exist within this catchment without moving house. The Winchester School Jebel Ali and Dove Green Private School run A Levels; Greenfield International School, Fairgreen International School and Sunmarke School offer IB Diploma provision. Read the science entry grade before confirming a combined-award entry, because some requirements are not reachable from it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is where marks actually go in each IGCSE science, drawn from the marked papers our tutors see from the schools serving this catchment. The patterns differ by discipline, which is the argument against a single general science tutor.

Biology: transport and homeostasis

Cambridge 0610; Edexcel 4BI1

Content-heavy and command-term sensitive. Six-mark answers written as unlinked bullet lists cap the mark regardless of how much the student knows, because the question wanted a connected account.

Biology: inheritance and variation

Cambridge 0610; Edexcel 4BI1

Genetic crosses are procedural and therefore trainable quickly. Marks go missing on the explanation that follows the cross, where a probability is stated without the reasoning the question asked for.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

Cambridge 0620; Edexcel 4CH1

Set-up order decides the mark. Students who apply the ratio before converting to moles produce a plausible answer from the wrong proportion, with no visible error to find on the script.

Chemistry: organic and rates

Cambridge 0620; Edexcel 4CH1

Functional groups, uses and reaction conditions, plus the factors affecting rate. Explanations that name a factor without saying how it changes collision frequency lose the second half of the mark.

Physics: electricity and circuits

Cambridge 0625; Edexcel 4PH1

The single weakest topic across this catchment. Marks go on circuit diagrams never drawn and on relationships recognised but not transposed quickly enough to reach the later parts of a question.

Physics: moments, pressure and energy

Cambridge 0625; Edexcel 4PH1

Multi-step questions where a missing unit or an unconverted prefix invalidates the final answer. The fix is a habit of writing units at every line rather than at the end.

Coordinated sciences papers

Cambridge 0654; Pearson double award

All three disciplines in one paper, which rewards fast switching between them. Students who revise by discipline and then meet them interleaved lose time orienting themselves question by question.

Combined and physical science

Cambridge 0653 and 0652; Pearson single award

Broad coverage with less depth. The characteristic failure is a recall-level answer where the question asked for an explanation, because the course gave less practice at extended reasoning.

Practical and alternative-to-practical papers

All Cambridge science codes

Assessed in writing and marked on precision: apparatus justified, variables controlled in operational terms, units in table headings, graph scales sensible. Four sessions of convention work usually produces the fastest mark gain available.

Mathematical skills inside science

All routes and boards

Rearranging relationships, handling prefixes, reading a scale and calculating a percentage. Weak maths shows up as weak science on a science script, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a content problem.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats. Which one fits depends on whether your child is on one science qualification or three, and on whether the problem is content, convention or mathematics.

Single-discipline specialist tuition

One tutor for one science, matched to the code. The right format for a separate-science student with a problem in one discipline, and the only honest format for Extended chemistry or physics where the mark schemes reward discipline-specific conventions.

  • Matched to 0610, 0620, 0625, 4BI1, 4CH1 or 4PH1
  • Follows the school's scheme of work
  • 60 or 90 minutes weekly at a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot
  • Written note after each session

Coordinated and combined science support

One tutor covering an integrated course, which is appropriate here because the qualification itself is integrated. The work targets extended reasoning, which is the characteristic weakness of broad-and-shallow courses, plus the fast discipline-switching the papers demand.

  • Matched to 0654, 0653, 0652 or the Pearson award route
  • Interleaved practice across the three disciplines
  • Extended-response structure drilled explicitly
  • Mathematical skills inside science addressed directly

Practical paper and convention blocks

Four to six sessions on the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, which is assessed in writing and marked on precision. The highest-yield block available in IGCSE science, and almost nobody revises for it separately.

  • Apparatus choices justified rather than listed
  • Variable control written in operational terms with a measurement
  • Table headings, units and graph scales drilled
  • Laboratory procedures remain the school's responsibility

01

Separate, coordinated or combined: the comparison nobody sets out

The first question to answer is not which topic is hard but which configuration your child is entered for, because that decides the content depth, the number of papers, the number of certificates and what sixth-form doors stay open. Schools in this catchment use all three, sometimes within the same year group, and the choice is often made for timetable reasons rather than announced as a decision.

Three separate sciences gives three certificates and the deepest content. It is the standard route for a student heading into A Level or IB Diploma sciences, and it is also the heaviest load on a Year 11 already carrying eight or nine subjects. The tutoring implication is specific: three separate sciences are three specialisms, and a general science tutor covering all three will be competent in one of them and approximate in the others.

A coordinated or double-award route covers all three disciplines in one integrated course counting as two certificates. It is the middle option most UAE schools use to keep progression open at a lower timetable cost, and it is generally accepted for sixth-form entry - though each school publishes its own requirement and that is the thing to read rather than to assume. Its characteristic weakness is interleaving: papers ask all three disciplines in sequence, and students who revise by discipline lose time reorienting.

Combined or single-award science is one certificate and the lightest load. Its weakness is depth: less practice at extended reasoning, so a question asking for explanation gets a recall answer. And its constraint is arithmetic rather than academic - one science certificate contributes one subject to the five the Ministry of Education requires for British-track equivalency.

02

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel in the sciences

Both boards award International GCSEs in science and both are accepted by UAE and overseas universities. For a tutor planning eight weeks of work the differences are material: the codes differ, topic coverage diverges in places, and the practical component is assessed differently, which changes what preparation looks like.

Cambridge separate sciences are Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625, each including a practical component assessed in writing - either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, depending on the centre's arrangement. The integrated routes include Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, Combined Science 0653 and Physical Science 0652. Pearson's separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with double and single award routes alongside and a different approach to practical skills.

The administrative differences matter as much. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct timetable version for your zone, and says plainly that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and then revises them, so the live official PDF is the only safe reference for either.

Our first question to a Jebel Ali family is therefore the code rather than the subject, and the code is printed on the exam entry statement and on the front cover of any past paper the school has issued. One photograph settles both the board and the route, and it prevents the single most expensive mistake available in science tutoring.

Where marks go, discipline by discipline

The argument against a general science tutor is empirical rather than snobbish. The three disciplines fail differently, and the fixes do not transfer. A tutor who is excellent at the biology failure mode will not necessarily spot the chemistry one, because they are not the same kind of error.

Biology fails on command-term depth and answer structure. The content is largely present; the six-mark question is answered as a list of true statements with nothing connecting them, and the mark scheme wanted a connected account. The fix is structural: write the chain, then check each link earns something. It is a writing discipline applied to biological content.

Chemistry fails on set-up order and convention. Converting to moles after applying a ratio produces a plausible answer from the wrong proportion with no visible mistake. Naming a rate factor without explaining its effect on collision frequency earns half the mark. These are mechanical rules and they respond to enforcement rather than to understanding.

Physics fails on rearrangement and diagrams. A student who recognises a relationship but cannot transpose it quickly loses every part of a multi-step question after the first. A circuit or free-body diagram never drawn means forces and currents are summed from a mental picture, which produces sign and direction errors the diagram would have prevented. Underneath all three sits mathematics: weak arithmetic and prefix handling show up as weak science, and are regularly misdiagnosed as a content gap. Testing for that before hiring three tutors is the cheapest hour a science parent can spend.

THE DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC FAILURE AND ITS FIX
DisciplineDominant failureWhat it looks like on the scriptThe drill
BiologyAnswer structure at depthTrue statements listed with nothing connecting themWrite the causal chain; check each link scores
ChemistrySet-up order and conventionPlausible answer from the wrong ratioMasses to moles first, always, enforced
PhysicsRearrangement and diagramsFirst part attempted, rest blankTranspose before substituting; draw first
All threeMathematics inside sciencePrefix and unit errors in otherwise sound workUnits written at every line
All threePractical paper conventionsVague variable control, units in cellsOperational control statements; units in headings
04

The practical paper, which is where the cheapest marks are

  • Justify apparatus choices; do not merely name them
  • State each control operationally, with the measurement included
  • Units belong in table headings, not in the cells
  • Graph scales should use most of the grid; the line respects the data
  • A described procedure must be followable by a stranger

Cambridge assesses practical skills in writing, through either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, and this is where science candidates in this catchment lose the most marks per hour of available effort. Students treat it as the easy paper because there is nothing to memorise. The mark scheme treats it as a test of precision, and precision has conventions.

What it actually asks for: apparatus chosen and the choice justified; the independent, dependent and controlled variables identified in the scenario given; each control stated in operational terms with a measurement rather than in principle; results tabulated with units in the headings; a graph with scales using most of the grid and a line that respects the data; and a procedure another person could follow without guessing.

Each of those has an expected form. "Keep the temperature constant" earns less than "hold the water bath at 30 degrees Celsius, checked with a thermometer, for every run". Units placed in the table cells instead of the headings lose marks nothing in the student's understanding justifies losing. A graph line drawn through the origin because it looks tidier, when the data does not support it, costs the analysis mark.

Four to six sessions on these conventions is typically the highest-yield block in IGCSE science, and the division of labour is clear: the hands-on practical work happens in the school laboratory under the teacher's supervision as the specification requires, and a tutor prepares the written skills and reviews the student's own write-ups. We link the official sources rather than distributing board papers or mark schemes, which are copyright material.

What science tutoring costs around Jebel Ali, and the three-tutor problem

Published Dubai figures, read October 2026, attributed to whoever published them. Tutopiya advertises from about AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65, both online. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 online. Dubai rate guidance puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 with independent home tutors advertising up to AED 500. Specialist exam-year work is published at AED 200-450 and above, TutorChase quotes around AED 270, and BartyED publishes AED 650.

For a separate-science student the arithmetic multiplies in a way no competitor page addresses. Three disciplines done properly means three specialists, and in-home that means three journeys to the same address each week. From Jebel Ali Village or Emaar South, three tutors willing to make that drive at a usable hour is not a realistic expectation at any price, which is why families in this catchment so often end up with one general science tutor by default rather than by choice.

Online, the three-tutor arrangement is ordinary. Each discipline gets its own specialist, each has its own slot, and the household has no journeys to accommodate. Most families still start with one discipline - the one the marked papers say is leaking most marks - and add a second only if the evidence supports it, because a Year 11 with three new tutors has three new sets of homework.

Per term is the more useful unit around here, because the route decides how many of these columns you are buying. Dubai rate guidance estimates a weekly one-hour session at roughly AED 240-600 a month at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support; across a three-month term that reads as AED 720-1,800, AED 1,800-3,600 and AED 3,000-6,000. A coordinated or double-award student needs one of those columns. A separate-science student, done properly, needs three. The advertised packages price the format rather than the teaching: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions lands near AED 100 a contact hour, while AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits is closer to AED 200 an hour for the same eight hours, and from Jebel Ali Village or Emaar South a good part of that gap is the drive rather than the tutor. None of these are IB Gram prices; our fee is quoted after the free trial lesson.

The series calendar for a science candidate, counted backwards

  • UAE candidates sit June and November; February/March is India-only
  • Entries close months ahead, fixing both route and tier
  • A practical test, where used, may sit earlier than the written papers
  • A timed-paper cycle needs the final eight to ten weeks
  • Confirm the centre's Cambridge administrative zone in writing

UAE candidates sit Cambridge IGCSE science in the June series and the November series. The February/March series is offered to India only, so any page quoting a February exam window or a late-November entry deadline to a Dubai family is handing them another country's dates. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in a May/June window and a November window.

Counting backwards is what makes a plan honest. Final entries close months before the papers, and the route and tier are fixed at that point - which means the separate-versus-coordinated question and the Core-versus-Extended question are both settled long before the exams. Mocks land about a term ahead and exist to produce data. A timed-paper cycle needs the final eight to ten weeks, which implies the syllabus has been covered once already.

Science has one extra edge the other subjects do not. Where the specification includes a practical test rather than an alternative paper, that component sits on its own date and is often earlier than the written papers, so it can be upon a student who is still planning to revise for it later. Ask the centre which practical arrangement applies and when it falls.

The checkable Pearson dates show the length of the tail: the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Work from the live official timetables and confirm your centre's Cambridge administrative zone in writing.

Equivalency, permits and online delivery from this catchment

The certificate count is where science meets the Ministry of Education. The published British-track equivalency rule requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. One page ranking in this market tells UAE parents the figure is six, which is not what the published rule says.

That matters for a combined-science student, who has one science certificate towards the five rather than two or three. It is an arithmetic check worth doing in Year 10 while the entry can still be changed, not in Year 12. Equivalency is a Ministry process that IB Gram neither performs nor influences, and tutoring is not a requirement for it; we describe it and point you to the official channel.

On permits: private tutoring in the UAE requires the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through MoHRE, and the UAE government states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule.

On delivery: IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time and offers no home visits in the UAE, with in-home tutoring running only in India. The honest limitations are a student who will not begin work without an adult present, a weak connection that shortens the hour, and a shared study space the tutor cannot manage. Laboratory time belongs to the school in every case. We are not KHDA approved, hold no ADEK, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson accreditation, and publish no self-asserted ratings or outcome promises.

08

Starting with the evidence rather than the anxiety

Send three things: which configuration your child is entered for, the codes if you have them, and a photograph of the most recent marked science paper. If you do not know the configuration, the exam entry statement does, and the code on the front of a past paper settles the board as well.

The marked paper is what makes the first session useful, and in science it often changes the plan entirely. A family convinced the problem is chemistry frequently turns out to have a mathematics problem appearing in all three sciences: prefixes, rearrangement, reading a scale. That is one fix rather than three, and it is cheaper and faster than the three-tutor arrangement they came expecting to buy.

Matching takes about a day for the separate sciences on either board and for the coordinated routes. Where a family needs two or three disciplines at once we usually recommend starting with one, chosen on the evidence of the marked papers, and adding a second only if the next set of marks supports it. A Year 11 with three new tutors has three new homework streams and one timetable.

The trial lesson is free, taught by the matched specialist rather than a salesperson, and built on the paper you sent. It ends with a written note of what the paper showed and what the first month should target, and that note is yours whether or not you continue. When no suitable specialist has a slot at the hour you want, we say so and offer a different weekday, a short block, or an honest suggestion to look locally with the permit question in hand.

Where we tutor

Jebel Ali and its neighbours, for science specifically

Science requests differ slightly between these communities, which helps a family judge whether their child's difficulty is unusual or typical for the catchment.

Jebel Ali Village

Low-rise housing by the port and free zone. Requests arrive late and often cover all three sciences at once, which is usually a signal that the underlying problem is mathematical.

Al Furjan

Metro-connected villas and townhouses, and the largest source of separate-science requests in this cluster, most often physics in Year 11.

Discovery Gardens

Dense apartments with mixed home languages. Command-term depth and question comprehension dominate here more than content gaps do.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds the catchment's IB continuum capacity alongside UK, American and SABIS schools, so science requests arrive against several assessment systems from one postcode.

Green Community

Villas and low-rise apartments with the shortest school run in the cluster, and often the first to notice that three separate-science tutors means three separate searches.

Dubai South

New and spread out around the Expo site and Al Maktoum airport. In-home science tutors decline or surcharge bookings at this distance, and three of them is three journeys.

Emaar South

Golf-course villas deep inside Dubai South. A separate-science student here needing three in-home tutors is asking for three cross-city drives a week.

Dubai Production City

Mixed residential and business district on the eastern edge, feeding both the Jebel Ali and Motor City school sets depending on year group.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jebel Ali

UK-curriculum science centres around Jebel Ali

These schools enter most of the IGCSE science candidates in this catchment, and they do not all use the same configuration. One school may offer separate sciences to a top set and a coordinated route to everyone else, which is why the entry statement matters.

  • The Winchester School, Jebel Ali
  • Dove Green Private School
  • The Arbor School, Al Furjan
  • Sunmarke School, Al Furjan
  • South View School, Remraam
  • GEMS Founders School, Dubai South

Other systems on the same streets

A large share of children in this catchment sit CBSE, American or SABIS science, or IB MYP sciences assessed against criteria. Parents comparing science tutoring with a neighbour are frequently comparing unrelated systems.

  • The International School of Choueifat Dubai
  • Nibras International School
  • Greenfield International School, Dubai Investments Park
  • Fairgreen International School, The Sustainable City

Schools are named purely as local education context. IB Gram asserts no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or client relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Identify the configuration

Separate sciences, coordinated or double award, or combined single award. It decides the content depth, the number of certificates and whether your child needs one tutor or three. The exam entry statement states it plainly.

  2. 02

    Confirm the codes

0610, 0620 and 0625 are Cambridge separate sciences; 0654, 0653 and 0652 are the integrated routes; 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 are Pearson. The code appears on the entry statement and on the front of any past paper.

  3. 03

    Send one marked science paper

This is what most often changes the plan. A problem presented as three weak sciences frequently turns out to be one mathematics problem showing up three times, which is a single cheaper fix rather than three separate ones.

  4. 04

Start with one discipline, on evidence

The one the marked papers say is leaking most marks. A Year 11 with three new tutors acquires three homework streams at once, and the second discipline should be added only if the next set of marks supports it.

  5. 05

Free diagnostic trial, then a weekly slot

A real one-to-one online lesson with the matched specialist, ending in a written note that is yours either way. Then a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot each week, reviewed against mock results and the live series.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The configuration question gets asked first

Separate, coordinated and combined routes count for different numbers of certificates and imply different tutoring plans. No competitor page in this market asks which one a family actually has before quoting a rate.

Three disciplines, three specialists

Biology fails on answer structure, chemistry on set-up order, physics on rearrangement and diagrams. The fixes do not transfer, which is why a general science tutor is strong in one discipline and approximate in the others.

Three tutors without three journeys

In-home, a separate-science student in Emaar South would need three cross-city drives a week, which is why families here settle for a generalist by default. Online, three specialists with three slots is ordinary.

The practical paper treated as a subject

Assessed in writing and marked on precision, it is the cheapest set of marks in IGCSE science and almost nobody revises for it separately. Four to six sessions of convention work is the highest-yield block available.

The certificate arithmetic checked early

A combined-science student has one science certificate towards the five the Ministry of Education requires. That is worth checking in Year 10, while the entry can still change, rather than during a university application.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jebel Ali: your questions answered

What is the difference between separate, coordinated and combined IGCSE science?+

Separate sciences means Biology, Chemistry and Physics entered as three qualifications with three certificates and the deepest content. Coordinated or double award covers all three in one integrated course counting as two certificates. Combined or single award covers all three in one qualification counting as one certificate, with the least depth. The configuration decides paper count, content load, sixth-form options and how many subjects count towards the five the Ministry of Education requires for British-track equivalency. The exam entry statement tells you which your child is on.

Can one tutor cover all three sciences for a Jebel Ali Year 11?+

For a coordinated or combined course, yes, because the qualification itself is integrated. For three separate sciences at Extended level, we would usually say no. The disciplines fail differently: biology on answer structure at depth, chemistry on mole set-up order and convention, physics on rearrangement and diagrams. A tutor who is genuinely strong in one of those is approximate in the others, and at Extended level the mark schemes reward discipline-specific precision that approximation does not reach.

Which science topic causes most trouble in this part of Dubai?+

Electricity and circuits in physics, consistently, followed by moles and stoichiometry in chemistry. In biology it is less a topic than a habit: six-mark questions answered as a list of true statements with nothing connecting them. Beneath all three sits mathematics - prefixes, rearrangement, reading a scale - which appears on the script as weak science and is regularly misdiagnosed as a content gap. That last one is worth testing for before buying three tutors, because it is a single fix.

How is the practical assessed if my child studies science online?+

The practical component is assessed in writing in any case, through either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper depending on the centre's arrangement, and it is marked on precision rather than on laboratory skill. Hands-on work happens at school under the teacher's supervision with the school's apparatus and risk assessment, as the specification requires. What a tutor prepares is the written skills: justifying apparatus, stating controls operationally with a measurement, table and graph conventions, and describing a procedure a stranger could follow.

Does a combined science award limit sixth-form options?+

It can, and the only reliable method is to read the stated entry requirement for the specific sixth form and subject your child wants. Science entry grades are usually among the higher ones on a school's list, because the step up in the first term is steep. Within this catchment both A Level and IB Diploma routes are available, and each publishes its own requirement. Check it in Year 10 while the entry can still be changed rather than in Year 11 after results are predicted.

How many science certificates count towards UAE equivalency?+

As many as your child's configuration earns: three for separate sciences, two for a coordinated or double award, one for a combined single award. The published British-track rule requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects. A combined-science student therefore needs four of the five from elsewhere on their timetable.

Are Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel sciences interchangeable for tutoring?+

No, and the gap is wide enough to waste a term. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610, 0620 and 0625, with integrated routes such as 0654, 0653 and 0652; Pearson runs 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 plus double and single awards. Topic coverage diverges in places and the practical component is handled differently, which changes the past-paper diet and the preparation. The code on the exam entry statement or the front of a past paper settles the board in seconds, and it should be confirmed before any tutor is assigned.

My child is weak in all three sciences. Where do we start?+

With a marked paper from each, before buying anything. A pattern of weakness across all three disciplines very often points to one shared cause rather than three independent ones, and the usual culprit is mathematics inside science: prefix handling, rearranging a relationship, reading a scale, calculating a percentage. That is one fix, delivered by one tutor, and it is substantially cheaper and faster than three discipline specialists. If the marked papers show genuinely different failures, then the three-tutor conversation is the right one.

Is it realistic to have three in-home science tutors in Emaar South?+

Honestly, no, and that is why families this far south often end up with one general science tutor by default rather than by choice. Three specialists in-home means three cross-city drives to the same address each week, at an hour when a student is already tired, and Dubai rate guidance puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 with independents to AED 500 before that multiplication. Online, three specialists with three separate slots is an ordinary arrangement, though most families should still start with one chosen on evidence.

When should a Year 10 start IGCSE science tutoring?+

Year 10 is the cheapest useful point, for two reasons. First, the route and tier decisions - separate against coordinated, Core against Extended - are made at entry and they cap or release the attainable grade, so evidence collected in Year 10 influences a decision that cannot be undone later. Second, the conventions that carry practical-paper marks and the habit of writing units at every line are far cheaper to build than to repair. By Year 11 the same work competes with a mock cycle.

Do you provide science past papers and mark schemes?+

We do not host or distribute them. Cambridge and Pearson papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and specifications are copyright material, and circulating unreleased material is a malpractice exposure for the student. We reference and link the official sources on cambridgeinternational.org and qualifications.pearson.com, and we work from the copies the school is licensed to provide. Any service offering you a complete library of papers, or material not yet released, is worth declining on those grounds alone.

Does the practical test sit on a different date from the written science papers?+

Where a centre uses a practical test rather than an alternative-to-practical paper, that component has its own date and it is frequently earlier than the written papers. Students who plan to revise practical skills last are sometimes caught by that, and it is one of the few genuinely avoidable losses in the subject. Ask the exams officer which arrangement applies and when the component falls, and confirm the centre's Cambridge administrative zone at the same time, since the zone determines which timetable version applies.

Will a science tutor follow my child's school scheme of work?+

Yes, and we ask for it at the start, because running a parallel syllabus is one of the quieter ways tutoring fails. If the class is three weeks from starting electricity, the useful work is preparation for electricity, not revision of a topic the class finished in September. The scheme of work is usually available from the subject teacher on request, and it is the single most useful document a science parent can have, because it tells you when the difficult units arrive.

How do science sessions change during Ramadan in this catchment?+

The hour moves and the shape changes. School hours shorten and households reorganise their evening around iftar, so a weekday 5pm slot usually becomes early afternoon or post-iftar for the month. For science we suggest protecting the frequency over the length: quantitative fluency decays fastest when sessions stop, and two shorter sessions hold it better than one long one while a student is fasting. Because nobody is travelling to your address, moving a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation of someone's commute.

Answer the configuration question, then send a paper

If you are looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Jebel Ali, the two questions that save the most money are which configuration your child is entered for and which board. Separate sciences, coordinated or combined decides whether you need one specialist or three; the code decides the papers. Send both, plus a photograph of the most recent marked science paper, and a specialist on that specification will read it, tell you whether the problem is one shared mathematics gap or three different failures, and teach a free one-to-one trial lesson online at a Gulf Standard Time hour that works from Jebel Ali, Al Furjan or Dubai South.
