IB Maths Tutor in Jebel Ali

An IB maths tutor in Jebel Ali is most useful when the work is planned backwards from the session your child actually sits rather than forwards from whichever chapter went badly. The Diploma maths year has fixed pressure points: the exploration deadline, the mock window, the final eight weeks. IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Term plan written backwards from the exam session, not from the textbook
  • Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation specialists, separately matched
  • Exploration coaching on the student's own work, criterion by criterion
  • Live one-to-one online lessons; free diagnostic trial first

IB & IGCSE in Jebel Ali

The Diploma maths year has a shape, and most tutoring ignores it

Maths tutoring usually starts when a topic goes wrong. The student struggles with integration, the family books a tutor, and the tutor teaches integration. That is reasonable and it is also why so much tutoring produces no grade movement: the work is organised around the symptom rather than around the calendar the student is actually living in.

The IB maths year has a shape. There is a point at which the exploration has to be chosen, a point at which it has to be drafted, a point at which it has to be finished, and those are set by the school rather than by the IB. There is a mock window a term before the papers. There is a final eight-week run in which nothing new should be taught. Each of those phases needs different work, and doing the right work in the wrong phase wastes the term.

This page is organised that way. It counts backwards from the session - the May session, which is what almost every UAE school enters its candidates for - through the mock window, the exploration deadline and the end of the first Diploma year, and names what should exist at each point. Then it gives the two tables that make the rest of the decisions: Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation, and the AED market bands with their sources. Each table is there to settle one decision rather than to decorate the page.

Geography is the reason this page talks about delivery at all. Jebel Ali sits at the industrial western end of Dubai, with its residential communities spread through Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investments Park, Green Community, Dubai South and Emaar South. A tutor driving to any of those for a 5pm session arrives at 5.45pm in term traffic, and the further south you live the fewer tutors will come at all.

IB Gram teaches live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For maths that format is a good fit, because the work is a shared screen with a worked solution on it and the student writing rather than watching. Starting at 4.30pm rather than 6pm matters more for maths than for most subjects, because tired students make arithmetic errors.

One honest note on dates before the tables. Cambridge and Pearson publish their timetables and we cite them. IB session and results dates are not confirmable from the IB by automated means, so this page names the May session as the one UAE schools sit and does not publish a specific IB examination or results date. Confirm every date with your school's Diploma coordinator.

At a glance

  • Work is planned backwards from the session, not forwards from the textbook
  • Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are matched as different courses
  • The exploration deadline is set by the school and lands earlier than families expect
  • Nothing new should be taught in the final eight weeks
  • No IB Gram home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring runs only in India
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three IB stages produce maths requests from this catchment, and the calendar pressure differs sharply between them. Only one of them has an external paper at the end.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Two courses, each at Higher and Standard Level: Analysis and Approaches, and Applications and Interpretation. Standard Level sits two papers; Higher Level adds a third that rewards sustained problem-solving across linked parts. Every student also completes the exploration, an internally assessed mathematical investigation marked against lettered criteria and moderated by the IB.

Jebel Ali students mostly arrive at Diploma maths from an IGCSE background, and the transition is sharper in maths than in any other subject. An IGCSE grade 9 confirms the content is manageable and says nothing about whether the student can write a reflection that earns marks or carry an unfamiliar Paper 3 structure through four parts.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria lettered A to D, each worth up to eight marks, covering knowledge and understanding, investigating patterns, communication, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. There is no external paper for most students, so the record is a set of criterion judgements rather than percentages.

MYP 5 students in Al Furjan and Green Community choosing between the two Diploma maths courses are making the decision on criterion scores they cannot convert into a predicted grade. The useful preparation is not more algebra but a diagnostic at the standard the chosen Diploma course will demand in its first term.

COREAges 16-19 · Across both Diploma years

The exploration and the Diploma core

The mathematics exploration is the internally assessed component of both courses, marked against criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the mathematics used. The wider Diploma core - Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, Creativity, Activity, Service - competes for the same weeks.

The exploration is where calendar failures concentrate. School deadlines land mid-way through the second Diploma year, at the same time as the Extended Essay and mocks. A student who has not chosen an exploration topic by the end of the first year is compressing three jobs into one term, and the reflection criterion is the one that suffers.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the parts of IB Mathematics that generate requests from this catchment, with the specific loss of marks each one produces. Mathematics is unusually diagnosable: the mark scheme tells you where the method marks were.

Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Calculus, proof, complex numbers and extended algebraic work, with a third paper built on long problem-solving tasks. Marks go on method lines never written down and on questions abandoned after part (a) when the later parts were reachable.

Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and statistics across two papers, one with technology and one without. The non-calculator paper exposes arithmetic fluency that a calculator has been hiding since Year 9.

Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Modelling, statistics, matrices and graph theory, with a third paper of extended modelling tasks. Candidates lose marks by quoting technology output without naming the model, the variables or the limits of the fit.

Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Statistics, financial mathematics and modelling with the calculator central rather than incidental. Interpretation sentences carry marks: a correct correlation coefficient with no statement of what it means scores less than it should.

The mathematics exploration

HL and SL, both courses

A student-chosen investigation marked against lettered criteria. Reflection is the criterion most often misread, treated as a conclusion rather than as critical evaluation of what the mathematics did and did not show.

Paper 1 technique

HL and SL

Short and structured questions where method marks dominate. The single most profitable habit in the whole course is writing the line before the answer, and it is a discipline rather than a concept.

Paper 2 technique

HL and SL

Technology-permitted, which changes the question style rather than making it easier. Marks go to candidates who state what they asked the calculator for; an unexplained number earns nothing even when it is right.

Paper 3 problem-solving

Higher Level only

Long linked tasks on unfamiliar ground. The skill is persistence with partial information, and the commonest failure is stopping at the first part that does not resolve cleanly rather than taking the result forward.

Graphic display calculator fluency

HL and SL, both courses

Regression, distributions, numerical solving and graph analysis. Students who learned the calculator by imitation lose time in the exam hunting menus, and lost time in maths is lost marks.

MYP to Diploma transition

MYP 5 into DP1

The gap is algebraic fluency and formal notation rather than topic coverage. Students who were strong on MYP criterion D often struggle with the notation discipline the Diploma papers assume from the first week.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, each tied to a phase of the year rather than to a level of intensity. Using the wrong one for the phase is the commonest way tutoring money is wasted.

Term-long content and notation work

The right format in the first Diploma year and the first half of the second. Weekly sessions that follow the school's scheme of work, with the tutor enforcing the notation and method-line discipline the papers assume. Dull, cumulative, and the thing that makes the final eight weeks possible.

  • Follows the school's sequence, not a parallel syllabus
  • Method lines written every time, without exception
  • Calculator skills built deliberately rather than by imitation
  • 60 or 90 minutes weekly at a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot

Exploration coaching, criterion by criterion

A short block around the school's internal deadlines. The tutor reads the student's own draft against the published criteria and names what each one asks for, with the mark ceiling stated. The student writes every sentence and does all the mathematics; the tutor explains and marks.

  • Topic narrowed until the mathematics is genuinely the student's own
  • Each lettered criterion addressed separately
  • Reflection rewritten as evaluation rather than summary
  • No drafting, rewriting or completion by the tutor

The final eight weeks: timed papers only

An intensive run in which no new content is taught. The student sits timed papers, the tutor marks them against the official scheme, and the following session attacks the two or three habits the marking exposed. Repeat until the habits stop appearing.

  • Full papers under real timing, including Paper 3 at Higher Level
  • Marked externally, never self-marked
  • A ranked habit list after each paper
  • Official past-paper sources linked rather than distributed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jebel Ali

01

The Diploma maths year counted backwards from the session

Start at the papers and walk backwards. In the final eight weeks nothing new should be taught, because new content at that point displaces the timed practice that converts knowledge into marks. Before that there is a mock window, which exists to generate data rather than to be survived. Before that the exploration has to be finished to a school deadline. Before that it has to be chosen, which means the first Diploma year has to end with a topic in hand.

Laid out that way, the usual pattern of family behaviour looks obviously wrong. Most tutoring enquiries from this catchment arrive after the mocks, which is the point at which the content window has closed. A student who has not covered a Higher Level topic by then cannot cover it properly and also do the timed practice, and something has to be sacrificed. The honest conversation is about which.

The second thing the backwards count exposes is the exploration collision. School deadlines for the mathematics exploration land in the same term as the Extended Essay deadline and the mocks. Three substantial pieces of independent work, one calendar. Students who chose an exploration topic in the first year sail through it; students who did not lose marks on the reflection criterion because there is no time left to think.

On dates: we name the May session as the one UAE schools sit and we do not publish specific IB examination or results dates on this page, because IB dates cannot be confirmed from the IB by automated means. Your school's Diploma coordinator holds the real internal calendar, and it is the one that matters most anyway.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: deciding properly

This choice is made in MYP 5 or Year 11, often on the basis of which course sounds harder, and it is difficult to reverse once the Diploma has started. The two courses are not a hard version and an easy version of the same subject. They examine different mathematics and they suit different students, and a strong candidate can be in the wrong one.

Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented, with calculus at its centre and a non-calculator paper that rewards arithmetic and algebraic fluency. Applications and Interpretation is modelling-oriented, with statistics, financial mathematics and technology integrated throughout, and interpretation sentences carrying marks alongside the computation. A student who thinks clearly in symbols belongs in the first. A student who thinks clearly about data and context belongs in the second.

The destination matters as much as the aptitude. Some engineering, mathematics, physics and economics degree programmes specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and some will not accept Applications and Interpretation in its place. Others treat them as equivalent. The only reliable method is to read the entry requirements for two or three target programmes directly, including any UAE universities on the list, before confirming the course.

Where a student is already enrolled in the wrong course, the useful work is not regret but adaptation: building the specific fluency the course assumes. For a modelling thinker stuck in Analysis and Approaches, that is non-calculator algebra. For a symbolic thinker in Applications and Interpretation, it is writing interpretation sentences that earn marks instead of treating them as decoration.

The exploration: what each criterion actually rewards

  • Presentation: can a reader follow the argument without re-reading?
  • Mathematical communication: notation used precisely, not loosely
  • Personal engagement: the student's own thinking, visible in the work
  • Reflection: evaluation of what the mathematics did and did not show
  • Use of mathematics: commensurate with the course and genuinely understood

Every IB mathematics student writes an exploration, and it is internally assessed and externally moderated. It is also the component where the gap between effort and mark is widest, because students optimise for the thing they can see - length, neatness, impressive-looking mathematics - and the criteria reward something else.

Presentation rewards a reader being able to follow the argument: a structure, consistent notation, labelled diagrams, no stray algebra. Mathematical communication rewards precision in that notation, including the distinction between a variable and a label and the correct use of symbols the student may have been using loosely for years. Personal engagement rewards evidence of the student's own thinking, which is not the same as enthusiasm about the topic.

Reflection is the criterion that costs most marks in this catchment and it is almost always misread. Students write a conclusion: here is what I found. The criterion asks for evaluation: what did the mathematics show, what did it fail to show, what were the limitations of the model or the data, what would be done differently. That is a different kind of paragraph and it has to be planned rather than appended.

The use of mathematics criterion rewards mathematics that is commensurate with the course and genuinely understood. A Standard Level student who imports a technique they cannot explain scores worse than one who uses course-level mathematics correctly and discusses it well. The boundary is firm: a tutor explains criteria, teaches content, narrows the topic and marks drafts. A tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of it, because that is a malpractice matter for the student.

04

Where maths marks actually go: three papers, three habits

Mathematics is the most diagnosable subject in the Diploma, because the mark scheme awards marks to specific lines rather than to overall impression. That means a marked script tells you almost exactly what went wrong, and it means the fixes are narrow and trainable rather than vague.

On Paper 1 the dominant loss is the unwritten method line. A student works a question partly on paper and partly in their head, arrives at the right answer and writes only the answer. Where the answer is wrong - a sign error, a transcription slip - every method mark that was available is lost too. Over a full paper this routinely accounts for the gap between two grades, and it is a discipline that can be installed in three or four sessions of enforcement.

On Paper 2 the dominant loss is the unexplained calculator result. Technology is permitted, which means the question is no longer about getting the number; it is about demonstrating what was asked of the technology and what the result means. A regression coefficient with no statement of the model, a solution with no indication of which equation was solved, a probability with no distribution named: all score below what the student's understanding deserves.

On Paper 3, at Higher Level, the dominant loss is abandonment. The paper is built from long linked tasks on unfamiliar ground, and a part that does not resolve cleanly causes students to stop, when the later parts are often reachable from a partial result. Practising persistence specifically - carrying an incomplete result forward and seeing which later parts it opens up - is a different exercise from practising topics.

What IB maths tutoring costs in Dubai, and what the travel premium buys

The interesting question in this catchment is not the headline rate but what the in-home premium is actually purchasing. Dubai rate guidance published for 2026 puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors advertising up to AED 500. A qualified subject tutor teaching online is published at AED 150-300, with Unitors quoting IB from AED 200. The gap is the journey.

For a Jebel Ali or Emaar South address, that journey is substantial, and here is what the premium buys. It buys a person in the room, which matters for a student who will not start work unsupervised. It buys no additional subject knowledge. And it costs you the later start time and the narrower choice, because only the tutors willing to make that drive are in your list at all.

Across the wider market, the published October 2026 bands are these: budget online tuition from AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik; qualified online subject tutors at AED 150-300; specialists at AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase around AED 270; and one premium provider, BartyED, at AED 650. Monthly packages seen include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits.

None of those are IB Gram prices. We publish no rate card here because the fee depends on course and level and is quoted after the free trial lesson. The bands exist so that any quote can be judged against something published - which is more than three of the pages currently ranking for this search provide, and two of the rest quote US dollars.

06

Online one-to-one maths from a Jebel Ali address, limitations included

Maths suits the online format better than most subjects, for a mechanical reason: the work is a shared surface with mathematics appearing on it. The tutor writes a line, the student writes the next, and both see the same page. For marking a script together - counting where the method marks were available and were not claimed - the shared screen is better than passing one paper copy back and forth.

The scheduling gain is larger here than elsewhere because of what maths demands from a student. A 4.30pm session catches a student who can still hold an algebraic manipulation in their head. A 6.15pm session, after a tutor has crossed Dubai, catches one who makes sign errors. Parents often read those sign errors as a knowledge problem when they are a fatigue problem.

IB Gram offers no home visits in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and this page says so near the top rather than leaving it to be discovered. Two providers ranking for UAE tutoring searches route parents to an Indian phone number without disclosing that delivery is remote, and disclosure is the baseline a family is owed.

The genuine limitations: a student who needs an adult present to begin work is better served in person; a weak home connection shortens the lesson whatever the clock says; and a shared study space, common in Discovery Gardens apartments, undermines the hour because the tutor cannot manage the room. If that is your situation, hire locally and ask the tutor whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit before the first lesson.

07

Honesty, permits and the claims worth checking in a maths tutor

  • We promise no grade, no points total and no improvement figure
  • No examiner claims we cannot evidence, and no implied access to marking
  • Official papers and mark schemes linked, never distributed
  • No KHDA, ADEK, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval claimed, because we hold none
  • Ask any independent tutor about the MoHRE private tuition permit

Mathematics attracts a particular kind of overclaim, because results in it look objective. Be sceptical of three things in particular when hiring anyone for IB maths in Dubai.

First, promised outcomes. No tutor can guarantee a 7, a points total or a grade improvement, and anyone offering one is either misunderstanding the assessment or misrepresenting it. Grade boundaries are set after each session is marked, and a student's final mark depends on work done in an examination hall nobody else is in. We make no outcome promises and we publish no success statistics, because a statistic without n, date and method is a liability rather than evidence.

Second, examiner claims. We do not describe tutors as IB examiners, because current examiner status is not something we can evidence for individuals, and in this market examiner status is routinely used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content that nobody has. We also do not host or distribute IB papers, mark schemes, boundary tables or subject guides, all of which are copyright material; we link the official sources instead.

Third, regulatory endorsement. IB Gram is not KHDA approved - a KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to training institutes with physical premises in Dubai, and we hold none and operate no UAE office. We claim no ADEK, MoE, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation or partnership. Separately, private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which the UAE government states is granted free of charge for two years; tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

08

Starting mid-year, and what we say when we cannot help

Most families in this catchment start mid-year, which is fine as long as the plan accounts for where in the calendar they are. Send the course and level - Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard - the school, and a photograph of the most recent marked assessment. If the exploration is in progress, send the current draft instead.

The first session is diagnostic rather than introductory. The tutor reads the script against the mark scheme and tells you plainly which of three situations you are in: habit marks recoverable in weeks, content gaps needing a term, or both with a deadline too close to do justice to either. That third answer is the one families least want and most need, because it determines what gets sacrificed.

Matching takes a day or so for Standard Level and either course; Higher Level Analysis and Approaches in the second Diploma year can take two or three days, because the pool is genuinely narrow and we will not put a general maths tutor in front of a Paper 3 problem. We tell you the expected wait before you start waiting.

When no suitable specialist has a slot at your hour, we say so and offer the real alternatives: a different weekday with the right tutor, a short block until a regular slot opens, or an honest recommendation to look locally. No competitor in this market publishes what happens when they cannot help, and a family planning a final term deserves to know that in advance rather than after a week of silence.

Where we tutor

Where IB maths students in this catchment live

These communities share the Jebel Ali school catchment. What they also share is a thin local supply of IB maths specialists, which is a supply problem rather than a search problem.

Jebel Ali Village

Low-rise housing beside the port and free zone. Short internal drives; long, unpredictable journeys to anywhere with a deeper tutoring market.

Al Furjan

Metro-connected townhouses and villas, and the single largest source of Diploma maths requests in this cluster, mostly in the second Diploma year.

Discovery Gardens

Dense apartments with mixed home languages. Non-calculator arithmetic fluency is a recurring theme in requests from here.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds the catchment's IB continuum capacity, so MYP 5 students choosing between AA and AI are concentrated here.

Green Community

Villas and low-rise apartments with the shortest school run in the cluster, which makes the absence of a local IB maths market more conspicuous.

Dubai South

Large and new, around the Expo site and Al Maktoum airport. A radius search for an HL Analysis and Approaches tutor from here routinely returns nothing.

Emaar South

Golf-course villas inside Dubai South. The 20 to 30 minute school run means a tutor arriving by car cannot start before the student is already tired.

Dubai Production City

Mixed residential and business district on the eastern edge, feeding both the Jebel Ali and Motor City school sets.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jebel Ali

IB provision serving the Jebel Ali catchment

The Diploma is taught at a small number of schools in and around this catchment, mostly in Dubai Investments Park, The Sustainable City and Al Furjan. Maths cohorts are therefore small, which is why a single teacher's availability matters more here than in central Dubai.

  • Greenfield International School, Dubai Investments Park
  • Fairgreen International School, The Sustainable City
  • Sunmarke School, Al Furjan

Feeder and neighbouring schools

Most Diploma maths students in this catchment came from an IGCSE or CBSE background at one of these schools, which is why the first diagnostic question is almost always about notation discipline rather than about topics.

  • The Winchester School, Jebel Ali
  • Delhi Private School Dubai
  • Dove Green Private School
  • The Arbor School, Al Furjan
  • The International School of Choueifat Dubai
  • South View School, Remraam

Schools are listed as local education context only. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or client relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Name the course and level

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. They are different courses with different papers and different failure modes, and we match specialists to them separately rather than assigning a general maths tutor.

  2. 02

Send a marked script or the exploration draft

A photograph of the most recent marked assessment, or the current exploration draft if that is the live pressure. Mathematics is diagnosable from a script: the mark scheme shows exactly which method marks were available and unclaimed.

  3. 03

Locate the student in the calendar

The plan depends on whether the exploration deadline, the mock window or the final eight weeks is next. The same weakness needs different work in each phase, and treating the final run as a content window is the commonest wasted term.

  4. 04

    Free diagnostic trial lesson online

A real one-to-one lesson with the matched specialist, built on the script or draft you sent, ending in a written note of what it showed and what the next month should target. No card details and no package commitment.

  5. 05

Weekly slot, reviewed at each pressure point

The same tutor at the same Gulf Standard Time hour, with the plan re-cut after the mocks and again eight weeks out. Slots shift for Ramadan and examination weeks as a calendar change rather than a renegotiation.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The plan runs backwards from the session

Phases determine the work: content in the first year, exploration around the school deadline, habits after the mocks, timed papers in the final eight weeks. Doing the right work in the wrong phase is why conscientious students see no movement.

AA and AI specialists matched separately

The two courses punish different habits - skipped method lines in one, uninterpreted technology output in the other - so we do not treat IB maths as a single subject with one tutor pool.

Exploration work with a hard boundary

Tutors narrow the topic, explain each criterion and mark drafts. They never write, rewrite or complete any part of it. Services selling finished coursework in this market put the student's whole Diploma at risk.

Marking by someone who is not the student

Self-marking over-rewards because the student knows what they meant to write. External marking against the official scheme converts a vague sense of underperformance into a short, ranked list of fixable habits.

Nothing promised that cannot be evidenced

We publish no grade promises, no success percentages and no self-asserted ratings, and every AED band here is attributed to its publisher with the month we read it. A number without a source is not evidence.

Slots that fit a long school run

Sessions start from about 4pm Gulf Standard Time because nobody is driving to Emaar South or Jebel Ali Village. For maths specifically that matters: fatigue produces sign errors that look exactly like gaps in understanding.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jebel Ali: your questions answered

When in the Diploma should a Jebel Ali student start maths tutoring?+

Earlier than most families do, and the reason is calendar rather than content. The first Diploma year is where notation discipline and method-line habits are cheap to build. By the time mocks are over, the content window has effectively closed, and a student who has not met a Higher Level topic cannot both learn it properly and do the timed practice that converts it into marks. If you are already past the mocks, the honest plan is habit repair and timed papers rather than new teaching.

Which IB maths course should a Jebel Ali student pick, AA or AI?+

They are different rather than ranked. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-oriented with calculus at its centre and a non-calculator paper, so it rewards symbolic fluency. Applications and Interpretation is modelling-led, with statistics, financial mathematics and integrated technology, and interpretation sentences carry marks alongside the computation. A student who thinks in symbols finds the first easier; one who thinks in data and context finds the second easier. Check the entry requirements of two or three target degree programmes before treating either as the safer choice.

How long does the IB mathematics exploration need to be?+

Length is not what the criteria reward, and treating it as the target is the commonest misdirection. The criteria ask for presentation a reader can follow, precise mathematical communication, visible personal engagement, reflection that evaluates rather than summarises, and mathematics commensurate with the course and genuinely understood. A concise exploration that addresses every criterion outscores a long one that neglects reflection. Your school publishes its own guidance on expected length, and that is the figure to work to rather than anything quoted on a tutoring page.

Why does my child lose marks when their final answers are right?+

Because the mark scheme pays for method lines, and the lines were never written down. A student works part of a question in their head, writes the answer, and it happens to be correct - so nothing is lost. On the next question a sign error creeps in, the answer is wrong, and with no working on the page every method mark available is lost as well. Over a full Paper 1 this routinely accounts for a whole grade. It is a discipline rather than a concept, and three or four sessions of strict enforcement usually installs it.

Can a tutor help with the maths exploration without crossing the line?+

Yes, and the legitimate space is wide enough to be genuinely useful. A tutor can help narrow the topic until the mathematics is within the student's own reach, teach the content the investigation needs, explain what each lettered criterion rewards and what its mark ceiling is, discuss how to structure the argument, check notation and referencing conventions, and mark a draft against the descriptors. A tutor cannot write, rewrite or complete any part of it, or supply the mathematics. The test after each session is whether every sentence was typed by your child.

What should the last eight weeks before the maths papers look like?+

Timed papers and marking, and nothing new. The student sits a full paper under real timing, including Paper 3 at Higher Level. Someone who is not the student marks it against the official scheme and produces a ranked list of repeated habits. The next session attacks those habits rather than moving to a fresh paper. Then repeat. Introducing new content in this window displaces the practice that converts existing knowledge into marks, which is why a late content push so often produces no change in the result.

My child is moving from MYP 5 into Diploma maths. What should we work on?+

Notation discipline and algebraic fluency rather than topic coverage. The MYP assesses against four lettered criteria out of eight and rewards investigation and communication; the Diploma papers assume formal notation and fast, accurate manipulation from the first term. Students who scored well on MYP criterion D frequently struggle with that assumption, because the MYP never required it. A summer of deliberate algebra - rearranging, simplifying, writing every line - plus a diagnostic at the standard the chosen course will demand is the highest-value preparation available.

Does my child need Higher Level maths for a UAE university?+

It depends entirely on the programme, and the only safe method is to read the entry requirements for two or three specific courses directly. Some engineering, mathematics, physics and economics programmes specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and will not accept Applications and Interpretation in its place; others treat the two as equivalent. Separately, school-leaving certificates generally need Ministry of Education equivalency before a UAE university application, and no IB points threshold is published in the source we read, so verify that on moe.gov.ae rather than relying on any figure quoted elsewhere.

Can online lessons work for a subject as visual as maths?+

Maths is one of the formats that transfers best, because the work is a shared surface with mathematics appearing on it. The tutor writes a line, the student writes the next, and both see the same page at the same moment. Marking a script together is actually easier than in person, since both people can annotate rather than passing one paper copy across a table. What it needs is a reliable connection and a quiet hour. What it does not do well is supervise a student who will not begin work without an adult in the room.

How quickly can you match an HL Analysis and Approaches tutor for Dubai South?+

Standard Level in either course usually matches within a day. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches in the second Diploma year can take two or three days, because the pool of tutors who can handle a Paper 3 problem properly is genuinely narrow and we will not substitute a general maths tutor. We tell you the expected wait at the enquiry rather than afterwards. If nobody suitable has a slot at the hour you need, we say so and offer a different weekday, a short block, or an honest suggestion to look locally.

Is a calculator skill really worth tutoring time?+

In Applications and Interpretation, yes, and in Analysis and Approaches more than families expect. Technology is integral to one of the two papers at both levels and to the AI course throughout: regression, distributions, numerical solving, graph analysis. Students who learned the calculator by imitation lose exam time hunting through menus, and lost time converts directly into lost marks. Deliberate calculator work is also where the Paper 2 habit of stating the model and the variables gets built, because an unexplained number on a technology paper earns nothing.

Do you publish IB exam dates for the maths papers?+

No, and we would rather explain why than print something plausible. IB session and results dates cannot be confirmed from the IB by automated means, so this page names the May session as the one almost all UAE schools enter candidates for and stops there. Cambridge and Pearson dates are published and we cite those where relevant. For your child's actual dates, the Diploma coordinator at the school holds both the external session dates and the internal deadlines, and the internal ones usually matter more to the term plan.

Can one tutor cover maths and physics for the same Diploma student?+

It is one of the few genuine overlaps, and it works when the student's problem is shared - algebraic manipulation that fails in both subjects, or formula rearrangement under time pressure. It works less well when the physics problem is really about the scientific investigation or about causal explanation, which is a different competency from mathematical method. Our default is one subject per tutor, because the match is for component-level knowledge of a specific mark scheme. Tell us both subjects and we will say honestly whether one tutor fits your child's case.

What happens to the maths plan during Ramadan?+

The hour moves and the content plan does not. School hours shorten, households reorganise their evening around iftar, and a weekday 5pm slot usually becomes early afternoon or post-iftar for the month. For maths it is worth protecting the frequency rather than the length: two shorter sessions hold fluency better than one long one when a student is fasting. Because nobody is travelling to your address, shifting a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation of a commute, and it moves back afterwards just as easily.

Work backwards from the session, starting with one marked script

If you are looking for an IB maths tutor in Jebel Ali, the first useful question is not which topic went wrong but where your child sits in the year. Send the course and level, the school, and a photograph of the most recent marked assessment or the current exploration draft. A specialist in that course reads it, tells you whether the lost marks are habit marks or content marks, and teaches a free one-to-one trial lesson online at a Gulf Standard Time hour that works from Jebel Ali, Al Furjan, Green Community or Dubai South. The written diagnosis is yours whether or not you continue.
