IB IGCSE Tutor for Gems International School Al Khail Students in Dubai

Most families looking for an IB IGCSE tutor for Gems International School Al Khail students in Dubai have already decided they want help. The open questions are how often, how long each session should be, and what each answer costs in AED. This page works through that arithmetic with published market figures. Lessons are one-to-one, live online, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Costs set out by session frequency and length, not just per hour

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The frequency question comes before the rate question

Parents usually ask what a tutor costs per hour. The more useful first question is how many hours, because frequency drives the monthly total far more than the rate does. A specialist at AED 300 once a week costs less per month than a mid-market tutor at AED 180 three times a week, and the two plans are suited to completely different problems. Deciding the shape first and the rate second is the way to avoid buying the right rate for the wrong plan.

The published monthly bands make the point. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for a weekly one-hour session are AED 240 to 600 for budget provision, AED 600 to 1,200 for a mid-market qualified tutor, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those all assume one session a week. Double the frequency and the monthly figure doubles; the hourly rate has not moved at all.

Session length is the second lever and it behaves differently. A 90-minute session is not simply one and a half times as useful as a 60-minute one. For paper practice and Internal Assessment drafting it often is, because a full paper or a full draft review does not fit into an hour. For habit work such as writing method out or drilling command words, an hour twice a week beats ninety minutes once, because the repetition is what installs the habit rather than the duration.

There is a third lever most families never consider: how long the plan runs. A four-session block with a defined end and a re-test is a different financial commitment from an open-ended weekly slot, and it is the one that answers the question of whether tutoring is the right purchase at all. Open-ended arrangements have a way of continuing because nobody set a point at which to decide.

A GEMS International School Al Khail family sits along a corridor where journey times shape everything. Al Khail Road moves well outside the peak and badly inside it, and the residential communities on either side are spread out. For an in-home arrangement that means the plan's shape is partly decided by somebody else's drive. Removing the journey removes that constraint, which is worth more than it sounds when you are trying to run two sessions a week.

A note on independent work, because it changes the frequency answer. Sessions are not the only hours in the week, and a plan that ignores what happens between them will always look as though it needs more of them. A student doing thirty minutes of targeted practice between sessions makes one weekly hour behave like two; a student doing nothing between sessions makes two weekly hours behave like one. Ask what the between-session task is and whether anyone checks it, because that is the cheapest lever in the whole arrangement and it is usually left unpulled.

Delivery is stated once and holds throughout. Tutoring for UAE families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Every AED figure below is the market's, attributed and dated, and none of them is an IB Gram price list.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

GEMS International School Al Khail runs the IB continuum. Frequency needs differ sharply by stage, and that is where most of the cost variation between families comes from.

PYPAges 3-11 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external examination, so no mark scheme for a tutor to work against. Support is skill-specific: reading fluency, number facts, sentence construction, English as an additional language. Short sessions more often rather than long ones less often is the right shape, because young students lose focus well before sixty minutes.

For a Dubai primary family, two thirty-minute sessions a week will usually achieve more than one sixty-minute session and costs the same. Ask whether a provider will split the hour. Many will not, which is a scheduling constraint rather than a pedagogical judgement and is worth knowing before you commit.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced assessment scored out of eight under lettered criteria, with no terminal examination. One session a week is almost always enough at this stage, because the work is habit formation rather than content coverage and the school is carrying the syllabus itself.

This is where a Dubai family can buy least and gain most. A weak communication or application criterion is weeks of work at the mid-market band, and settling it here removes the Diploma rescue work that otherwise arrives at specialist exam-year rates two or three years later.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. This is where frequency decisions get expensive, because families commonly run two or three subjects in parallel at once rather than sequencing them, which triples the monthly figure.

UAE schools sit the May session. No IB examination or results date appears on this page because ibo.org blocks automated verification; confirm every deadline with the school's Diploma coordinator. For Internal Assessment drafting, 90-minute sessions earn their length. For fluency work, two shorter sessions a week does more.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What frequency and session length suit each subject, and why. These are the courses most often requested along the Al Khail corridor.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency is built by repetition, so two shorter sessions a week beats one long one for most students. Paper 3 at Higher Level is an extended investigation marked on written reasoning, and that component does need a full ninety minutes to practise properly.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics and modelling with technology use assumed throughout. Calculator technique is an assessed skill and benefits from short, frequent practice. One weekly session is usually sufficient, which makes this a cheaper subject to support than Analysis and Approaches at the same rate.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Quantitative work rewards frequency: moles, energetics and significant figures become reliable through repetition rather than explanation. Mechanism notation needs teaching once and practising often, which is the classic case for two sessions a week over a short block.

Physics

HL and SL

Deriving relationships from plotted data is a contained skill that four or five sessions usually settles, so a short block at any frequency works. Full past-paper practice under timed conditions needs a session long enough to sit the paper, which an hour rarely is.

Biology

HL and SL

Command-word discipline is the common failure and it responds to frequency, not duration: short drills on answer shapes, repeated. Content volume tempts families into long sessions, which usually produces passive coverage rather than active recall.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Draft feedback and Individual Oral rehearsal both need length. A sixty-minute session rarely accommodates reading a piece of work and discussing it usefully, so this is the subject where ninety minutes most clearly earns the extra cost.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy is drilled in short bursts; Higher Level evaluation is taught in longer ones, because it needs a full essay plan discussed end to end. A mixed pattern works well here and most providers will accommodate it if asked at the start.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study technique requires working through stimulus material, which takes time, so longer sessions less often suits it. Quantitative tools at Higher Level are marked on method shown and are better drilled in short, frequent sets.

IGCSE Mathematics

Core and Extended

Tier sets the grade ceiling, with Core capped at 5 and Extended reaching 9, so the first purchase is two timed papers rather than a term of sessions. Afterwards, habit work on writing method out responds best to twice-weekly short sessions.

Arabic as an Additional Language

KHDA mandatory stream

Required in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed curriculum. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs because expectations and the language of instruction differ, so confirm the stream before buying any sessions. Language work favours frequency strongly over length.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes with different frequency and length profiles. All are one-to-one live video with a named tutor in Gulf Standard Time; none involves a journey to a UAE address.

Twice weekly, shorter sessions, short block

Two sessions a week of sixty minutes for four to six weeks, aimed at a habit rather than a topic. This is the shape for writing method out, drilling command words or building algebraic fluency, because repetition is the mechanism and duration is not.

  • Four to six weeks with a defined end date
  • Opens and closes on a timed paper under the same conditions
  • Monthly cost roughly double a single weekly slot
  • Only practical when no journey has to be made

Weekly ninety minutes for drafting and papers

One longer session a week, for work that does not fit into an hour: sitting a full past paper and reviewing it, or reading an Internal Assessment draft and discussing it criterion by criterion.

  • Long enough to sit and review a full component
  • Suits Diploma drafting and language oral rehearsal
  • One slot to protect in the week rather than two
  • Pauses during the school's own mock weeks

Sequenced subjects instead of parallel ones

For a Diploma student with two or three weak subjects, taking them one at a time rather than together. This holds the monthly figure near a single subject's band and usually produces more movement, because one habit change at a time is absorbable and three are not.

  • Order set by which subject is costing most marks
  • Second subject begins once the first has been re-tested
  • Monthly cost held near one band rather than three
  • Decided from marked work, not from the student's preference

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The arithmetic of frequency, in AED

Bestimate's published Dubai monthly estimates all describe one weekly hour: AED 240 to 600 for budget provision, AED 600 to 1,200 for a mid-market qualified tutor, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. That is the unit most families are quoted and the one most families then exceed without noticing, because the plan quietly becomes twice a week in the term before an examination.

Run the comparison properly and the result is often counter-intuitive. One specialist session a week at the upper end of the mid-market band costs less per month than three sessions with a budget tutor, and for a diagnosed component it will usually do more. Conversely, if the problem is a habit that needs installing, three cheaper sessions a week may genuinely beat one expensive one, because the mechanism is repetition rather than insight. The rate is not the variable that decides this. The nature of the failure is.

The monthly packages visible in this market encode the same trade. AED 799 for eight online sessions works out around AED 100 a session, which places it in the budget band however it is described, and eight sessions a month is twice a week. AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions is roughly AED 200 to 225 an hour including travel, at one session a week of double length. Both are reasonable products. They are not the same product.

The table below sets the frequencies against the monthly bands so a family can see what each shape costs before choosing a provider. The figures are the market's, read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price.

Sixty minutes or ninety: what the extra half hour buys

Session length is treated as a budget decision and is really a pedagogical one. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what is being worked on, and the two categories behave in opposite directions. Work that has to be done in one piece needs the length. Work that has to become automatic needs the frequency.

Things that need ninety minutes: sitting a full past-paper component and reviewing it in the same session, reading an Internal Assessment draft and discussing it criterion by criterion, rehearsing a language Individual Oral, planning and critiquing a full Higher Level essay. Trying to do any of these in sixty minutes produces half the work and a session that ends mid-thought, which is the most common complaint families have about hourly tutoring and is a shape problem rather than a tutor problem.

Things that are better twice a week at sixty minutes: algebraic fluency, command-word drills, writing method out so it can be credited, vocabulary and language retrieval, calculator technique. In each case the student needs to do the thing repeatedly with feedback between attempts, and a single long session gives one attempt with a lot of discussion around it.

For younger students the calculation is different again. Attention rather than content is the constraint, and two thirty-minute sessions a week will usually achieve more than one sixty-minute session at the same cost. Not every provider will split an hour, which is worth asking about before signing rather than discovering afterwards.

The rate bands, and what a parent can actually verify

Once the shape is decided, the rate matters. The published Dubai bands run from AED 33 to 52 an hour at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik, through AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB at Unitors, to AED 270 at TutorChase, AED 200 to 450 and above for specialists on Bestimate's table, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, and AED 650 at BartyED for examiner-led work.

Three of the strongest pages competing for this search publish no price at all and two quote United States dollars, which is a currency UAE families do not transact in. Knowing the band is therefore most of the value: a quote at AED 400 an hour for Year 8 homework support is identifiable as mispriced only if you know the market, and so is a quote at AED 60 for Higher Level Paper 3 coaching.

What a parent can genuinely verify is narrower than what gets claimed, and it is worth knowing which is which. Verifiable: whether the tutor teaches that subject at that level weekly, whether marking is included in the rate, who teaches each session by name, what a cancelled session costs, and whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Not verifiable from a website: examiner status, a self-published star rating, or a claimed average improvement.

On that last point, one provider in this market displays two conflicting review totals on the same page, and another shows a five-star average from twenty reviews alongside a student-numbers claim several orders larger. Treat self-asserted ratings as marketing. The MoHRE permit, by contrast, is a real thing, is granted free of charge for two years, and can simply be asked about.

Online one-to-one against an in-home visit along the Al Khail corridor

In-home tutoring deserves a fair statement of its merits. A tutor in the room holds the attention of a younger or more distractible student more easily, written working is visible without a camera trick, and some families prefer a person present as a matter of preference rather than argument. The market prices that at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate's figures and up to AED 500 from independent home tutors.

Along the Al Khail corridor the premium is mostly the drive, and the drive is unusually consequential here because the communities are strung out rather than clustered. A tutor coming from Jumeirah or Mirdif can realistically teach two sessions in an evening instead of four, and the rate reflects that lost capacity. More importantly for a frequency-led plan, twice-weekly in-home sessions are rarely sustainable: the second one lands too late in the evening to be useful.

The second cost is the shortlist. A family in Al Quoz or Al Khail Gate choosing an in-home tutor is choosing from whoever will make that drive on a weekday, which for a mainstream subject may be a decent list and for Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Paper 3 may be nobody. Geography sets that limit and more money does not move it.

IB Gram removes the journey rather than discounting it. Lessons are delivered one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nothing here suggests otherwise; home visits are an India-only service. For a plan that needs two sessions a week, that is the difference between a schedule that works and one that does not.

Five ways Dubai families waste tutoring money

  • Buying before a marked script has been read
  • Running two or three subjects in parallel instead of in sequence
  • An open-ended weekly slot with no re-test and no end date
  • A tutor who does not teach that subject at that level weekly
  • Starting six weeks out, when only technique can still change

These are the patterns that recur, and each has a one-sentence remedy. The first is buying before diagnosing. A plan agreed without anybody reading a marked script is a guess, and a guess at the right hourly rate is still a guess. One timed paper marked against the published scheme costs an hour and determines every hour after it.

The second is running subjects in parallel. A Diploma student with three weak subjects whose family buys three weekly slots is paying three times the monthly band and asking the student to absorb three habit changes at once. Sequencing them, in order of how many marks each is costing, holds the cost near one band and usually produces more movement.

The third is the open-ended slot. A weekly session with no end date and no re-test continues because nobody set a point at which to decide, and families discover at results that nothing changed. The remedy is a block with a defined end and a fresh paper at the close. The fourth is the mismatched tutor: four sessions spent reading the specification is several hundred dirhams of no teaching, and the question that prevents it is whether the tutor teaches this subject at this level weekly.

The fifth is late buying. Help in the final six weeks is the most expensive version of the purchase because only timing and technique can still move; content gaps are no longer repairable at that point. That is not an argument for panic buying earlier, it is an argument for one cheap diagnostic paper a term, which is what makes early intervention possible at all.

06

The examination calendar, and why the deadline is not the exam

Families plan around the examination and are caught by the entry deadline, which sits months earlier. By the time the papers arrive the decisions that mattered have already been taken: which subjects, which tier, which board. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only, so a Dubai candidate sits June or November.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Those past dates are cited because they can be checked. For any future series, read the live official timetable on the board's own site rather than a restated date.

One administrative point costs more than any tutoring decision if it goes wrong. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Get the zone in writing from the exams officer.

For the Diploma, UAE schools sit the May session. This page publishes no IB examination or results date, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unverified date is worse than none on a page a family schedules around. The dates that actually govern the year are the school's own internal Internal Assessment deadlines, which sit ahead of the IB's.

Permits, premises and what nobody is approved to say

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • No fine amounts are published, so none are quoted here or should be quoted to you
  • A KHDA Educational Services Permit covers premises; IB Gram holds none
  • Regulators inspect schools and do not endorse tutoring providers

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its smart app, website and e-services system with a stated two-working-day completion time.

Because the permit is free of charge, no provider can present licensing as a cost justifying a higher rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, but no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to a parent by anybody, and a figure circulating in this market could not be verified.

Premises are a separate licence. A tutoring operation with staff and a location in Dubai requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit issued to training institutes, beginning with initial approval, allowing a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and requiring annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE office or centre, and describes no tutor as KHDA-approved.

Dubai private schools themselves are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which inspects annually across six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under ADEK, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the federal Ministry of Education. A regulator inspects schools; it does not endorse tutoring companies, and any provider implying otherwise should be asked for a permit number.

08

What no number of sessions can buy

  • No grade promise is honourable, at any rate or frequency
  • Completed coursework for sale transfers the risk to the student
  • Criterion feedback and examiner-style questions on the student's own draft are legitimate
  • Official board material is linked at source, never redistributed

A page about frequency should be clear that some outcomes are not purchasable at any frequency. Nobody can promise a grade, and a provider offering a guaranteed score or a specific improvement is making a commercial claim rather than a professional judgement. What can be stated honestly is what sort of change is available over what period, and what the evidence at the end of a block will be.

The harder boundary concerns coursework. At least one provider competing for these searches sells completed Internal Assessments. The fee is real and the mechanism is a risk transfer: the academic-honesty finding, if it comes, attaches to the student's record while the seller keeps the money. No number of sessions and no fee makes that a reasonable purchase.

The legitimate version is specific. A tutor may teach the content an assessment rests on, explain what each published criterion rewards, assign an honest indicative score to a draft and quote the descriptor behind it, help narrow a research question until it fits the limit, confirm a data collection plan is viable, read the student's own draft and ask the questions an examiner would ask, and teach referencing properly.

A tutor may not write, rewrite, restructure or supply text for submission, choose the research question, provide data the student did not collect, or edit until the sentences stop being the student's. Nor should a tutor distribute syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; those are linked at source. If feedback could be shown to the school's coordinator without discomfort, it is on the right side of the line.

09

Availability, and what to ask before booking a frequency

  • Ask whether the slot is held for the term or moves weekly
  • Ask whether the same named tutor teaches every session
  • Ask when the second weekly session would actually be
  • The free trial is one session with the actual specialist, no card required

Frequency depends on availability, and availability is finite. The scarcest combinations are the ones families most often want twice a week: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Paper 3, Chemistry Higher Level mechanisms, a less commonly taught Diploma language, IGCSE Computer Science pseudocode to the specification style. No provider in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is itself worth noticing.

The position here is that a family is told the realistic timescale and the alternatives, including waiting. Where a UAE-based specialist is not available, the tutor may be based elsewhere and working to Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed before booking rather than left to be inferred from a contact number. For an online lesson it makes no practical difference, but a parent is entitled to know.

Three questions are worth asking before committing to a frequency. Can this slot be held for the whole term, or does it move each week? Will the same named tutor teach every session, or is there a rota? And if two sessions a week are agreed, is the second one at a time the student can actually use, or is it a late slot nobody wants? A rota destroys continuity and a bad second slot wastes half the plan.

The free trial lesson is one session, free with no card required, taken with the specialist who would actually teach. It exists so a mismatch costs an hour rather than a term. If the fit is wrong, say so and a different specialist is proposed; if nobody suitable exists for the component, that is said plainly rather than worked around.

Where we tutor

The Al Khail corridor and the communities either side

GEMS International School Al Khail sits on the Al Khail Road corridor, which serves communities spread along several kilometres rather than clustered around a centre. Journey time is the hidden variable in any in-home plan here.

Al Barsha South

Close to the school with short runs, so a 4.30pm start is realistic and two sessions a week is schedulable without the evening collapsing.

Dubai Hills Estate

Large villa plots and a high concentration of Diploma-age students. Families here most often ask for ninety-minute Internal Assessment sessions, which is the shape that genuinely needs the length.

Al Quoz and Al Khail Gate

Mixed residential and industrial, with very little local tuition supply. Twice-weekly in-home sessions are effectively impossible here, which makes the online shape the only route to that frequency.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Triangle

Dense apartment communities with a young demographic and multiple children per household, where splitting an hour across two children is a common request and usually a false economy.

Arjan and Dubailand

Newer towers with long bus journeys. Homework starts late, so evening slots after 6.30pm dominate and session length is constrained by bedtime rather than by budget.

Motor City and Sports City

Settled communities with their own schools and a broad curriculum mix, where families often need advice on two different systems at once and value a single consistent weekly slot.

Business Bay and Downtown

Apartment towers along the far end of the corridor. The afternoon drive out is slow, which for in-home arrangements pushes any second weekly session past seven o'clock.

Al Khail, Al Barsha South and Dubai Hills

Decide the shape before comparing rates

Work out whether the problem needs repetition or needs length. Habits such as writing method out and command-word discipline want two shorter sessions a week. Drafting, full papers and oral rehearsal want ninety minutes. Comparing hourly rates before deciding this is how families buy the right price for the wrong plan.

  2. 02

    Buy one marked timed paper

A past paper from the correct board and syllabus code, sat under exam conditions and marked against the published scheme, with a written diagnosis naming the failing component. This is the cheapest hour in the plan and it frequently shortens everything that follows, because it rules out whole categories of work.

  3. 03

Confirm codes and entry details with the school

One email to the exams officer for the board, the syllabus codes, the tiers and the centre's Cambridge administrative zone. All four are free to obtain and each prevents a specific expensive error, the worst of which is a missed paper through using the wrong zone timetable.

  4. 04

Take the free trial, then fix the frequency

One free session with the specialist who would teach, no card required. Use it to agree the shape as well as the fit: how many sessions a week, how long, and whether the slot is held for the term. Agreeing the frequency vaguely is how a once-weekly plan becomes a twice-weekly bill.

  5. 05

Re-test at the end of the block, then decide

A fresh unseen paper under the same conditions as the first. Either the component moved or it did not. If it did not, change the plan rather than extending it; if it did, decide deliberately whether to continue or stop. An open-ended slot with no re-test is the most common way money goes nowhere.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Shape first, rate second

The frequency and length of sessions move the monthly total more than the hourly rate does, and they are decided by the kind of failure rather than the budget. A plan built in that order is cheaper and more effective than one built by comparing hourly prices across providers.

Twice weekly is actually schedulable

Because no journey is made, a second session in the week lands at a usable time rather than after seven o'clock. Along the Al Khail corridor that is the practical difference between habit work being possible and being theoretical, and habit work is where most of the available marks sit.

Short sessions for young students

Two thirty-minute sessions a week usually achieve more than one sixty-minute session for a primary-age child, at the same cost, because attention rather than content is the constraint. Not every provider will split an hour; online delivery makes it straightforward.

Rates published with sources

Every AED band on this page names who published it and when it was read. Three of the strongest pages in this market publish no price and two quote United States dollars. A parent cannot identify a mispriced quote without knowing the market.

An end date and a re-test

Blocks have a defined close and a fresh paper at the end, so continuing is a decision rather than a default. Open-ended weekly slots are the commonest way a Dubai family spends steadily for a year and finds out at results that nothing moved.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

One-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. Where a UAE-based specialist is unavailable the tutor's location is disclosed, and there is no UAE office or centre.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How many sessions a week should a GEMS International School Al Khail student start with?+

One, in most cases, after a marked timed paper has produced a written diagnosis. One weekly session is enough when the school is carrying the syllabus and the work is a single diagnosed component. Two a week is justified when the problem is a habit that needs repetition, such as writing method out so it can be credited, drilling command words or building algebraic fluency, and then only for a short block of four to six weeks. Starting at three a week before anybody has read the student's work is how families triple a monthly cost without improving the plan.

Is a ninety-minute session better value than an hour?+

It depends on the task, not the price. Ninety minutes earns its cost when the work cannot be split: sitting a full paper component and reviewing it, reading an Internal Assessment draft and discussing it criterion by criterion, or rehearsing a language Individual Oral with feedback. An hour is better when the work needs repeating with feedback between attempts, which covers fluency drills, command-word practice and calculator technique. For a primary-age child neither is right, and two thirty-minute sessions a week will usually do more at the same cost.

What does two sessions a week cost in Dubai at mid-market rates?+

Roughly double the published monthly band, since Bestimate's Dubai estimates of AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above specialist all assume a single weekly hour. Two mid-market sessions a week therefore runs around AED 1,200 to 2,400 a month. The monthly package figures in the market are consistent with that: AED 799 for eight online sessions is about AED 100 a session, which is budget tier at twice-weekly frequency. These are market figures read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

Can the second weekly session be scheduled at a useful time?+

Online, yes, which is most of the reason twice-weekly plans work at all. With an in-home arrangement along the Al Khail corridor the second session usually lands after seven in the evening, because the tutor has to drive between households and the corridor moves badly in the afternoon peak. A session a tired student cannot use is money spent for nothing. Ask any provider, before agreeing a frequency, exactly when both sessions would be, and whether both slots are held for the full term rather than being rescheduled each week.

Should we run three Diploma subjects at once if three are weak?+

Usually not. Three weekly slots costs three times the monthly band and asks the student to absorb three habit changes simultaneously, which rarely works. Sequencing them, starting with whichever is costing the most marks on the evidence of marked work, holds the monthly figure near one band and generally produces more movement. Begin the second subject once the first component has been re-tested on a fresh paper. The order should come from the scripts rather than from which subject the student finds least pleasant, which is the usual basis for the decision.

Will a cheaper tutor three times a week beat a specialist once a week?+

For habit installation, sometimes yes, because the mechanism is repetition and a competent tutor supervising repeated practice delivers that. For a diagnosed component such as extended-response method marks or Internal Assessment criterion work, no, because the budget tier generally cannot read a marked script and name what is failing. The decision follows from the diagnosis rather than from the arithmetic. One timed paper marked against the published scheme tells you which of the two situations you are in, and it costs a single hour.

Does GEMS International School Al Khail run IGCSE as well as the IB?+

Confirm the programme and the entry details with the school directly rather than with any tutoring provider, including this one, because provision changes and an outdated answer on a website is worth nothing. What matters for a tutoring plan is narrower anyway: which board and syllabus codes your child is actually entered for, which tier where tiering applies, and the centre's Cambridge administrative zone. The exams officer can confirm all of that in one email, and those four facts determine what a tutor should be teaching and from which specification.

Can sessions be split into two shorter ones for a younger child?+

Online, yes, and for a primary-age student it is usually the better shape. Attention is the binding constraint well before sixty minutes, so two thirty-minute sessions a week typically achieve more than one hour at the same total cost. In-home arrangements rarely allow it because two journeys for one hour of teaching is uneconomic for the tutor, which is a logistics limit rather than a teaching judgement. Ask before committing, because some providers price and schedule strictly in whole hours and will not split them whatever the age of the student.

What happens to the schedule during Ramadan?+

Timing moves and the rate does not. Sessions can shift to post-Iftar slots for the month and return to the usual time afterwards with the same tutor. Because delivery is online there is no journey to re-plan and no travel cost to re-price, which is why Dubai families generally find an online schedule easier through the month than an in-home one. School days are shortened, so some families use the earlier afternoon instead and keep evenings clear. Decide which shape you want before the month begins rather than part-way through it.

How long should a block of tutoring run before we judge it?+

Four to six weeks for a habit or technique problem, eight to twelve for a content gap, with a fresh unseen paper at the end under the same conditions as the first. That close is the point of the block. Either the diagnosed component moved or it did not, and both answers are useful: if it did not, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan should change rather than extend. An arrangement with no end date and no re-test continues by default, and families usually discover at results that nothing shifted.

Is marking included in the hourly rate?+

Ask, because it varies by provider and it changes the real cost significantly. Marking a full past paper properly against the published scheme takes time, and if it is charged separately or simply not done, the evidence trail the whole plan depends on does not exist. The related questions worth asking at the same time are who teaches each session by name, whether a cancelled session is credited or billed, and what happens if the tutor leaves mid-term. Those terms vary more between providers than the headline hourly rates do.

Do tutors travel to homes in Al Barsha South or Dubai Hills?+

Not from IB Gram. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Lessons for Dubai families are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. The market does offer in-home tutoring at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate's figures and up to AED 500 from independent tutors, and for a younger or easily distracted student there is a real case for it. For a twice-weekly plan along the Al Khail corridor the scheduling usually defeats it, which is the practical reason online suits this shape.

Does a higher frequency mean faster results?+

Only where repetition is the mechanism. Fluency, command-word discipline and retrieval respond to frequency because the student needs repeated attempts with feedback in between. Content understanding does not: a second session in the same week often arrives before the student has done anything with the first, and the time goes on re-explanation. The honest answer is that frequency should follow the diagnosis. Where the diagnosis is a content gap, one good session a week plus independent work usually beats two sessions and no independent work.

What should we do first if exams are only a few weeks away?+

Work from the student's own most recent marked mock rather than starting new content, and accept what that window can and cannot change. In six weeks, timing, paper order, method shown and command-word reading can all move, and those are real marks often worth a grade boundary. A topic never properly learned will not become secure in that time, and a plan that tries to cover everything thinly moves nothing. Two or three sessions a week on technique is a reasonable shape here; it is also the most expensive point at which to start, which is the argument for a diagnostic paper each term.

Decide the shape, then the rate

For a family at GEMS International School Al Khail, the two decisions that actually set the cost are how often and how long, and both follow from what is failing rather than from a budget. Habit problems want two shorter sessions a week for a short block. Drafting and full papers want ninety minutes. One marked timed paper, read against the published scheme, tells you which you are dealing with and usually shortens the plan. Book the free trial with the specialist who would teach, agree the frequency and the slot explicitly, and lessons run one-to-one online in Gulf Standard Time with no journey priced into the hour.
