IB Subject Selection Guidance in Dubai

IB subject selection guidance in Dubai is the cheapest hour in the entire Diploma and the one most families skip. Two or three sessions cost a fraction of a term's tutoring; a wrong Higher Level choice costs two years of grinding against the wrong course. This page sets out the six groups, the real constraints in Dubai schools, and what the decision is worth in AED. Sessions run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The cheapest decision in the Diploma, and the most expensive to get wrong

Subject selection is a two-hour conversation that governs two years. A student who takes Higher Level Chemistry because a friend did, and spends DP1 and DP2 at a grade 4 in it, has paid for that choice in a way no tutoring budget can recover. A student who drops Mathematics Analysis and Approaches without checking their intended degree's prerequisites may find the door to engineering closed before they have applied. Both outcomes are common in Dubai, and both are avoidable in an afternoon.

Put the money side by side. Published Dubai tutoring rates read in October 2026 run AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB specialists, with one premium provider at AED 650. Two or three sessions of selection guidance therefore sit in the low hundreds to around a thousand dirhams. A year of weekly support in a Higher Level subject the student should never have taken sits, on Bestimate's own Dubai monthly estimates, at AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above per month for specialist exam-year work. The ratio is not close.

What selection guidance actually does is narrow. It maps the student's marked evidence from MYP or IGCSE against the six Diploma groups, checks the intended university destinations for prerequisites, and tests the resulting combination against what the school's timetable can actually deliver. Those three steps produce a shortlist and, more usefully, a list of the combinations that will not work and why.

The Dubai-specific layer matters more than families expect. Not every Dubai school offers every subject, and those that do often block them against each other on the timetable, so a theoretically ideal combination can be impossible in practice. Schools also differ in which Mathematics routes they run and at which levels. The coordinator and the published options booklet are the authority on this, and the honest sequence is to ask them first and then take the real constraints into a guidance conversation. Ask for the current options booklet and the timetable block structure in the same email, because a subject list without its blocks tells a family nothing about which pairs are genuinely available together. Where a wanted combination turns out to be blocked, the two realistic fixes are a different level in one subject or a different Mathematics route, and both are easier to weigh before the option form is signed than after.

All of our UAE sessions run one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. For this work the format matters because the people worth asking are subject teachers for the specific courses under consideration, and online delivery means a Dubai family can speak to a Chemistry HL specialist and a Mathematics AA specialist in the same week.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The choice is made at a specific point in a Dubai school career, and what comes before it determines how much evidence there is to decide on.

MYP5Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Choosing from MYP Year 5

Students in Dubai schools running MYP to Year 11 choose Diploma subjects on criterion-referenced evidence rather than examination grades. That makes the choice harder to ground, because MYP levels do not convert simply into expected Diploma grades.

MYP students also arrive in DP1 without timed-paper experience, which depresses their first DP1 marks regardless of subject fit. Families should separate the two effects when judging a choice, because a weak first term in Higher Level Physics may be exam technique rather than evidence the subject was wrong.

IGCSEAges 15-16 · Year 11

Choosing from IGCSE

The commonest route in Dubai, and the one with the most usable evidence. IGCSE marks by component, with the tier the student sat, give a reasonable signal: a student who needed the Extended tier's easier questions to reach a grade 6 is being told something about Higher Level.

The clearest single predictor we see for Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches in Dubai is whether the student sat Additional Mathematics 0606 or Further Pure 4PM1. Not having done so is not disqualifying, but it usually means a bridging block before DP1 rather than a surprise in the first term.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Changing during DP1

Changes are possible early in DP1 and get harder as the year proceeds, because content accumulates and registration deadlines approach. A level change from Higher to Standard is usually easier than a subject change, and both are administrative decisions owned by the school.

The practical Dubai window for a comfortable change is the first term of DP1, and the decisive conversation is with the coordinator rather than the subject teacher. Families who wait for the DP1 end-of-year results to confirm what October already suggested have usually lost the easy option.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Core components in the decision

The Extended Essay is written in one subject, Theory of Knowledge runs across all of them, and CAS is a completion requirement. The Extended Essay subject should be part of the selection conversation, because it is far easier in a subject the student enjoys reading in.

Dubai students frequently choose an Extended Essay subject late and badly, picking a Higher Level science because it feels serious and then struggling to find a researchable question. Thinking about it at selection time costs nothing and prevents a difficult DP1 spring.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects Dubai families weigh most often, with what each actually demands rather than how it sounds.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebraic and analytic route, expected by most engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics programmes. At Higher Level it is the heaviest single commitment in most timetables, and proof is the part students have practised least.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling and statistics route, accepted by many business, social science and design programmes. A genuine fit for students who reason well with data, and a mistake for anyone whose target degree names the other course.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Required for most medicine and many life-science routes, and the Higher Level course carries a heavy content load. The commonest Dubai selection error is taking it at Higher Level without checking whether the target degree asks for it.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy and precision-dependent rather than conceptually difficult. Suits students who can hold detailed terminology accurately; the marks go on command terms and specific wording rather than on broad understanding.

Physics

HL and SL

Mathematically demanding at Higher Level, and a poor pairing with Standard Level Mathematics for most students. If Physics HL is on the list, the Mathematics choice has to be considered in the same breath.

Economics

HL and SL

A frequent Dubai choice and often a good one. Rewards clear evaluative writing and accurate diagrams. Students expecting a numerical subject are sometimes surprised by how much of the grade is written argument.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study based and accessible, but it rewards applying tools to evidence rather than reciting them. Rarely a prerequisite for anything, which makes it a useful sixth subject rather than a Higher Level anchor.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Group 1 for most Dubai students. The Higher Level course adds a written essay and more texts, and it suits students who already read widely. Taking it at Higher Level for prestige is a common and costly error.

Language B: French, Spanish, Arabic

HL and SL

Level choice matters more here than in any other group. A student placed at Higher Level on the strength of a conversational background can struggle with the written and oral demands, and the reverse wastes a capable linguist's points.

Visual Arts, Music and Theatre

HL and SL

Group 6 options with substantial coursework and exhibition or performance requirements spread across both years. Workload is front-loaded differently from examined subjects, which changes how the overall timetable feels in DP2.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Selection support is short by nature. These are the three shapes families use, all one-to-one over live video.

Single selection session

One session with the student's marked evidence, intended destinations and the school's options booklet on the table. The output is a shortlist, a list of combinations that will not work and why, and the questions to take to the coordinator.

  • Marked IGCSE or MYP evidence reviewed
  • Prerequisites checked for named destinations
  • Combination tested against the school's blocks
  • Written summary for the family

Two-subject taster

Short sessions in the two subjects a student is torn between, taught by specialists in each, so the decision is made on experience rather than reputation. Usually one hour per subject, and frequently decisive within the first thirty minutes.

  • Real course content, not an overview
  • A different specialist for each subject
  • Honest view on fit from the teacher
  • Often resolves a choice families have debated for weeks

Level-change review

For students already in DP1 wondering whether a Higher Level should become Standard. Built on marked DP1 work, with a clear view on whether the gap is fit or technique, and on the timing constraints the school will apply.

  • Based on marked DP1 assessments
  • Separates exam technique from subject fit
  • Names the timing question for the coordinator
  • Includes the case for staying at Higher Level

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The six groups, and what each one actually asks of a student

The Diploma takes one subject from each of the first five groups and a sixth from either Group 6 or a second subject from an earlier group, with three taken at Higher Level and three at Standard. That structure is deliberately broad, and it means a student cannot assemble six subjects purely from their strengths. The skill in selection is choosing well inside the constraints rather than wishing them away.

Each group makes a different demand, and the demands are not interchangeable. Group 1 asks for sustained analytical writing about texts. Group 2 asks for productive language use under time, including orals. Group 3 asks for evaluative argument supported by evidence or diagrams. Group 4 asks for precision and, in Physics, for mathematics. Group 5 is either algebraic or statistical depending on the route. Group 6 asks for sustained coursework and a public outcome.

Where Dubai families most often go wrong is treating the Higher Levels as a ranking of prestige rather than a match to demand. Three Higher Level sciences is a popular Dubai combination and a poor one for most students, because it loads three content-heavy subjects with three Internal Assessments into the same months. A student aiming at medicine needs specific subjects, not the maximum number of difficult ones, and the specific list is shorter than the instinctive one.

The table below sets out the groups with the demand each makes and the pitfall we see most often in Dubai cohorts. Read the right-hand column as a diagnostic: if the pitfall describes your child's reasoning, the choice is being made on the wrong basis and that is worth an hour to fix now.

02

Choosing the three Higher Levels

Three Higher Levels is where the real decision sits, because Higher Level is where the workload and the university prerequisites live. The sequence that works is: start from the destination, then the evidence, then the enjoyment, and only then the timetable. Reversing that order is how students end up with a combination that looks balanced and serves nothing.

Start with destination because prerequisites are non-negotiable and vary. Medicine routes typically name Chemistry and often Biology at Higher Level. Engineering routes typically name Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Physics. Economics programmes vary widely, with some naming Mathematics at Higher Level and others accepting either route at Standard. Those requirements are published by each institution and should be read from the institution's own page rather than from a summary, including this one.

Then test against the evidence. A student with a grade 6 at IGCSE in a subject they found hard is not usually a Higher Level candidate in it, and a student who reached a 9 comfortably probably is. Component-level marks help: a Chemistry grade built on strong recall and weak calculation predicts difficulty in Higher Level Chemistry, where the calculation load rises. This is exactly the reading a subject specialist can do in twenty minutes and a brochure cannot do at all.

Enjoyment matters third, and it matters genuinely: two years is a long time in a subject a student dislikes, and the Extended Essay is far easier in a subject they want to read about. Timetable comes last because it is a constraint rather than a preference, but it can still override everything, which is why the school's option blocks should be in hand before a shortlist becomes a decision.

03

University prerequisites, including inside the UAE

Prerequisite checking is the part of selection that families most often do late, and it is the only part with hard edges. Every university publishes its own requirements, and they differ not only between countries but between programmes in the same institution. The rule we give Dubai families is simple: read the requirement on the admitting institution's own page, for the specific programme, and write it down with the date you read it.

The Mathematics route is the decision most often caught out by this. Many quantitative degrees name Analysis and Approaches specifically, while others accept either course, and some accept Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level where they would not accept it at Standard. A student who chooses the route for comfort in Year 11 can discover in DP2 that the course they want is unavailable to them, and at that point the only remedies are changing the target or adding a year.

For students intending to study in the UAE, there is a separate administrative layer that is not an admissions requirement but is frequently confused with one. Ministry of Education equivalency is the process by which a non-UAE school certificate is recognised here. On the British track the published requirements, as reported in July 2026, are five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary Levels. No IB points threshold appears in that source, so no IB equivalency figure should be quoted without a Ministry page behind it.

Two cautions belong with that. Equivalency is a Ministry process that no tutoring provider performs, influences or guarantees, and tutoring is not required for it. And admission and equivalency are different gates: a student can satisfy one and not the other. Ask the admitting institution about admission and the Ministry's own channel about equivalency, and do both before the Diploma choice is finalised rather than after.

04

What your Dubai school's timetable will actually allow

  • Ask for the option block structure, not just the subject list
  • Confirm which options are guaranteed and which depend on numbers
  • Check which Mathematics routes run at which levels
  • Shortlist after the constraints are known, not before

A combination that passes every other test can still be undeliverable. Dubai schools build option blocks, placing subjects in parallel columns, and a student can take only one subject from each block. Two subjects a student wants may sit in the same column, in which case one of them has to go whatever the prerequisites say. This is not a flaw in the school; it is arithmetic about teacher numbers and room availability.

Smaller Diploma cohorts add a second constraint. A subject may be listed in an options booklet and run only if enough students choose it, which means a provisional choice can disappear in September. In practice this most often affects Group 6 arts subjects, less common Language B options, and Higher Level routes in subjects with small uptake. Ask the coordinator which options are guaranteed and which are conditional on numbers.

The third constraint is level availability. Not every Dubai school runs both Mathematics courses at both levels, and some run Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level only or Applications and Interpretation at Standard only. For a student whose target degree names a specific route, that can be decisive, and in a small number of cases it is a reason to consider a different school at the Diploma entry point rather than to compromise the degree plan.

The practical sequence is therefore: get the options booklet and the block structure, ask which options are conditional, confirm the Mathematics routes offered at each level, and then shortlist. Families who shortlist first and check later spend a fortnight attached to a combination that was never available, which is a specifically Dubai frustration given how much the option menus differ between schools a few kilometres apart.

05

What selection guidance costs, against what a wrong choice costs

This is the only decision in the Diploma where the cost comparison is genuinely one-sided, so it is worth setting out in figures. Published Dubai market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour and an IB specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider AED 650. Those are other providers' figures, not ours, and they are the market for an hour of specialist time.

Selection guidance is two or three such hours, sometimes with a short taster session in each of two subjects. Set that against the alternative. A student in the wrong Higher Level subject typically buys weekly support in it, which on Bestimate's Dubai monthly estimates is AED 600 to 1,200 a month in the mid band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work. Over eighteen months of DP1 and DP2, that is an order of magnitude more than the guidance would have cost, and it does not fix the underlying mismatch.

There is a second cost that does not appear on an invoice. A wrong Higher Level choice consumes the student's capacity across all six subjects, because the subject they are struggling with takes the hours the others needed. Families often notice the effect as a general decline in DP2 rather than as a problem in one subject, which is why the diagnosis is frequently made late and why the choice is worth getting right rather than fixing.

The honest limit on what guidance can do: it cannot tell you what grade a student will achieve, and it cannot promise a university place. What it can do is prevent the two specific errors that are expensive and irreversible: a combination that fails a prerequisite, and a Higher Level the marked evidence never supported. Both are identifiable in an hour, and neither is identifiable from a prospectus.

The four selection mistakes we see most in Dubai

  • Three HL sciences is rarely required and often unmanageable
  • The Mathematics route must be checked against the target programme
  • Set the Language B level on written evidence, not on fluency at home
  • Group 6 can balance a timetable better than a third science

The first is three Higher Level sciences. It is a popular Dubai combination, chosen because it signals seriousness, and it loads three content-heavy courses with three Internal Assessments into the same months of DP2. Very few degrees require it. A student aiming at medicine needs the named subjects, usually Chemistry and often Biology, not the maximum quantity of difficult ones.

The second is choosing the Mathematics route for comfort. Applications and Interpretation is a real and demanding course, not an easier version of Analysis and Approaches, but it is not accepted everywhere Analysis and Approaches is. Choosing it without reading the target programme's requirement is the single most common irreversible error in this decision, because the content diverges early and a late switch is rarely practical.

The third is the Language B level, set by family background rather than by written ability. A student who speaks a language at home may be placed at Higher Level and then struggle with the written components and the formal oral, while a capable classroom linguist placed at Standard Level gives away points they could have earned. Ask the language department for a view based on written work rather than conversation.

The fourth is treating Group 6 as unserious. An arts subject with coursework spread across two years can balance a timetable better than a third examined science, because its workload sits differently and it offers a genuinely different kind of assessment. Dismissing it in favour of a subject the student does not need is a choice made for how the combination reads rather than for how the two years will go.

07

When the choice can still be changed, and who decides

Changes are possible and they get harder with time. The easiest window is before the Diploma starts, when a choice is still a form rather than a timetable. The next easiest is the first term of DP1, when content has not accumulated far and the school can usually reorganise. After that, a level change from Higher to Standard remains more feasible than a subject change for longer, because the course content overlaps.

The decision belongs to the school. A coordinator weighs timetable capacity, teaching groups, registration deadlines and the student's evidence, and no outside provider influences that. What a family can do is arrive with the right information: marked work showing the pattern, a clear statement of the destination requirement, and a specific request. A vague concern produces a reassuring conversation; a marked paper and a named prerequisite produce a decision.

Timing matters in a way that catches Dubai families out. Registration deadlines for the examination session sit months ahead of the papers, and the administrative window for a change closes well before the academic case for one becomes obvious. If a Higher Level subject is clearly wrong in October of DP1, that is the month to raise it, not after the DP1 end-of-year examinations confirm what October already showed.

One honest caution about the alternative. A level change is not failure and it frequently improves the overall points total, because the capacity it frees is spent across the other five subjects. Families sometimes resist it for reasons that have nothing to do with the Diploma, and the result is two years of strain and a lower total than a Standard Level entry would have produced.

08

Starting a selection conversation

Bring four things: the student's most recent marked work with component marks if available, the school's options booklet and block structure, a list of intended destinations or at least course families, and any prerequisite requirements already written down with their source. With those, a single session produces a shortlist and a list of what will not work.

We will tell you when the answer is already clear and no sessions are needed. That happens often: a student with strong marked evidence, a clear destination with published requirements, and a school with wide option blocks usually has an obvious combination, and the useful output is confirmation plus two questions for the coordinator rather than a paid programme.

The taster option exists for the genuinely close calls, which in Dubai are most often Chemistry against Physics, Economics against Business Management, and the two Mathematics routes. An hour of real course content with a specialist in each resolves more than weeks of family discussion, because the student experiences the demand rather than imagining it. The specialists are asked for an honest view on fit, including when the answer is that neither is a good match.

The trial lesson is free with no condition beyond booking a time. Whatever is decided, the authority on what the school can deliver is the coordinator, and the authority on what a university requires is that university's own admissions page. Our role is to read the marked evidence against the course demands and to say plainly what the evidence supports, which is the one part of this decision that needs a subject teacher rather than a brochure.

Where we tutor

Selection constraints by Dubai school cluster

What a student can choose depends on where they study, because option availability and timetable blocking differ school by school across the emirate.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Large Diploma cohorts, so option blocks are usually wide and most combinations are deliverable. Questions here are about prerequisites for competitive overseas courses rather than availability.

Al Barsha and Dubai Science Park

Several Diploma schools within a short radius offering different subject menus. Families comparing schools at Year 11 should compare options booklets rather than reputations.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer cohorts where some Group 6 and Language B options may run only if numbers allow. Confirm with the coordinator before building a combination around them.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Many students arrive from IGCSE, so there is good marked evidence to base a choice on. The commonest issue is Mathematics route selection rather than subject availability.

Arabian Ranches and Mudon

Villa communities feeding schools with established Diploma provision. Group 6 arts options are often available here and are frequently overlooked in favour of a third science.

Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah

Internationally mobile families, where a possible mid-Diploma move makes subject availability at a future school part of the decision rather than an afterthought.

Mirdif and Al Qusais

Students often travelling further to Diploma schools, with more UAE university destinations in play. Prerequisite checking should include the institutions here, not only overseas ones.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

A growing Diploma population across several schools. Timetable blocking varies widely, so the options booklet matters more than any general advice about ideal combinations.

School ecosystem

Dubai schools with wide Diploma option menus

Larger Diploma cohorts generally mean more subjects offered and fewer blocking clashes. Ask for the published options booklet and the block structure, which is the document that tells you whether a combination is deliverable at that school.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Gather the marked evidence

The most recent marked work with component marks where available. A grade alone hides the pattern: strong recall with weak calculation predicts difficulty in Higher Level Chemistry, and that distinction is readable in twenty minutes by a specialist.

  2. 02

Write down the prerequisites with their source

For each intended course, the requirement as published on the admitting institution's own page, with the date read. Requirements differ between programmes in the same university, and a summary from anywhere else is not good enough to plan on.

  3. 03

Get the options booklet and block structure

Ask the coordinator which subjects run at which levels, which are conditional on numbers, and how the option blocks are arranged. A combination that cannot be timetabled is not a shortlist, however well it fits on paper.

  4. 04

    Test the shortlist in order

Prerequisite, then marked evidence, then workload shape, then enjoyment, then availability and blocking. Reversing that order produces combinations that look balanced and serve no destination.

  5. 05

Take the questions back to the coordinator

The school owns the decision. Arriving with marked work, a named prerequisite and a specific request produces a decision; arriving with a general concern produces a reassuring conversation and no change.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Costed against the alternative

Two or three specialist hours at published market rates against eighteen months of weekly support in a mismatched Higher Level. We set both figures out with their source so the comparison is visible rather than asserted.

Prerequisites before preferences

The only hard edges in this decision are published admissions requirements, and they differ programme by programme. We work from the institution's own page and tell families to record the date they read it.

Marked evidence read by a subject specialist

Component-level marks predict Higher Level difficulty in ways a grade does not. A Chemistry 6 built on recall rather than calculation is a different signal, and reading that takes a teacher rather than a brochure.

Honest about what your school can deliver

Option blocks, conditional subjects and which Mathematics routes run at which levels decide what is possible. We build the shortlist after those constraints rather than presenting an ideal combination that cannot be timetabled.

We say when no sessions are needed

Where the evidence, the destination and the option blocks all point one way, the useful output is confirmation and two questions for the coordinator. That conversation is short and we are willing to have it.

No promises about places or points

Guidance cannot predict a grade or secure an admission, and we claim neither. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry or IB endorsement, and Ministry equivalency is a process we describe rather than perform.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How are IB subjects chosen, and how much freedom is there?+

The Diploma takes one subject from each of the first five groups, with a sixth from the arts or a second subject from an earlier group, and three subjects are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard. That structure is deliberately broad, so a student cannot build six subjects purely from their strengths. The freedom lies in which subject within each group, and at which level. Real freedom is further limited by what your school offers and by how its option blocks are arranged, which is why the options booklet matters as much as the ideal combination.

Should my child take three Higher Level sciences?+

Usually not. It is a popular Dubai combination chosen because it signals seriousness, and it loads three content-heavy courses with three Internal Assessments into the same months of DP2. Very few degrees require it. Medicine routes typically name Chemistry at Higher Level and often Biology; engineering routes name Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Physics. The requirement is specific subjects, not the maximum quantity of difficult ones, and the student's capacity is finite across all six subjects rather than per subject.

Which Mathematics route should we pick for engineering or economics?+

Read the requirement on the admitting institution's own page for the specific programme, because this is the decision most often caught out. Many quantitative degrees name Analysis and Approaches specifically; some accept either course; a few accept Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level where they would not at Standard. Content diverges early, so a late switch is rarely practical. Write down what you find with the date you read it, and check each target programme separately rather than assuming a pattern across a country.

What evidence should a Higher Level choice be based on?+

Marked work at component level rather than an overall grade. A grade 6 in IGCSE Chemistry built on strong recall and weak calculation predicts difficulty in Higher Level Chemistry, where the calculation load rises; the same grade built the other way predicts the opposite. The tier matters too: a student who needed the Extended tier's more accessible questions to reach a 6 is being told something. That reading takes a subject specialist about twenty minutes and it is the part of the decision no prospectus can supply.

Can my child change a subject or level after DP1 starts?+

Often yes, and it gets harder with time. The easiest window is before the Diploma starts; the next easiest is the first term of DP1, before content accumulates. A level change from Higher to Standard stays feasible longer than a subject change because the content overlaps. The decision belongs to the school, which weighs timetable capacity, teaching groups and registration deadlines. The practical warning is that the administrative window closes well before the academic case becomes obvious, so October concerns should be raised in October.

Is dropping to Standard Level a failure?+

No, and it frequently improves the overall points total. A Higher Level subject that is not working consumes capacity across all six subjects, so the hours it takes come from somewhere, usually from the subjects that were fine. Moving it to Standard Level releases that capacity and often lifts three other grades. Families sometimes resist for reasons unconnected to the Diploma, and the result is two years of strain and a lower total than the Standard Level entry would have produced. It is a timetable decision, not a verdict.

What does subject selection guidance cost in Dubai?+

Two or three hours of specialist time, which at published Dubai rates read in October 2026 sits in the AED 200 to 450 and above band per hour, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider AED 650. Compare that with the alternative: weekly support in a mismatched Higher Level runs AED 600 to 1,200 a month in Bestimate's mid band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work, across eighteen months. Those are market figures rather than our price list, and the ratio is not close.

How do we know whether a subject is actually offered at our school?+

Ask the Diploma coordinator for the options booklet and the option block structure, and ask two further questions: which subjects are guaranteed to run and which depend on how many students choose them, and which Mathematics routes are offered at which levels. Dubai schools a few kilometres apart differ considerably, and a subject listed in a booklet can still fail to run in September if numbers are short. Smaller cohorts are most affected in Group 6 arts subjects and less common Language B options.

How should we set the level for Language B?+

On written evidence rather than on how fluently the student speaks at home. A student with a conversational background is sometimes placed at Higher Level and then struggles with the written components and the formal oral, while a strong classroom linguist placed at Standard Level gives away points they could have earned. Ask the language department for a view based on marked written work. This is the group where level placement goes wrong most often in Dubai schools, and it is also one of the easiest to get right by asking.

Is an arts subject a weaker choice than a second science?+

Not inherently, and dismissing Group 6 is a common Dubai error. An arts subject carries substantial coursework spread across both years with an exhibition or performance outcome, which sits differently in a timetable from a third examined science with another Internal Assessment in the same months. If the target degree does not require a second science, choosing one anyway is a decision about how the combination reads rather than about how the two years will actually go for that student.

Does the Extended Essay subject need deciding at selection time?+

It does not have to be, but thinking about it then costs nothing and prevents a hard DP1 spring. The Extended Essay is a long independent piece in one subject, and it is far easier in a subject the student actively wants to read about. Dubai students frequently choose late, picking a Higher Level science because it feels serious and then struggling to find a researchable question. If one of the six subjects is an obvious fit for that, it is a point in that subject's favour at selection time.

Do UAE universities have different IB requirements?+

Programme-specific admission requirements are published by each institution and should be read there. There is also a separate administrative layer that families often confuse with admission: Ministry of Education equivalency, by which a non-UAE school certificate is recognised in the UAE. On the British track the published requirement, as reported in July 2026, is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus A Level or AS Level passes. No IB points threshold appears in that source, so verify your own case through the Ministry's own channel.

Can a tutoring provider influence what my school lets us choose?+

No, and any that implies otherwise is misdescribing a school process. Option availability, block structure and level changes are decided by the Diploma coordinator on timetable capacity, teaching groups and registration deadlines. What a family can do is arrive with the right material: marked work showing the pattern, a named prerequisite from the institution's own page, and a specific request. That combination produces a decision; a general concern produces a reassuring conversation and no change to the timetable.

What if our child cannot decide between two subjects?+

Try an hour of real course content in each, taught by a specialist in that subject, and let the demand rather than the reputation decide. In Dubai the close calls are most often Chemistry against Physics, Economics against Business Management, and the two Mathematics routes. Students usually know within thirty minutes. We also ask each specialist for an honest view on fit, including when the answer is that neither subject is a good match and a different group entirely would serve the student better.

Subject selection is the one Diploma decision where a small amount of specialist time prevents a cost that no later tutoring can recover. Send the most recent marked work with component marks, the school's options booklet and block structure, and the destinations or course families in mind, and one session will produce a shortlist, a list of combinations that will not work, and the questions to take to your coordinator. If the answer is already obvious we will say so and charge you for nothing. The trial lesson is free, one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.
