IB HL vs SL Guidance in Dubai

IB HL vs SL guidance in Dubai usually arrives as a money question in disguise. Higher Level courses carry more hours, more content, an extra paper in several subjects and a scarcer specialist pool, so an HL hour is priced above an SL hour in every published rate table in this emirate. This page sets out the difference, the points arithmetic, and which Higher Level to fund when you can only fund one. Sessions run online.

  • Higher Level courses are published at 240 teaching hours, Standard Level at 150
  • Several subjects add a third paper only at Higher Level
  • Specialist rates in Dubai are published at AED 200 to 450 and above
  • Level changes are governed by the school's own deadline, not ours

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A level decision with a price attached

Most Dubai families meet this question twice. The first time is at the end of the first Diploma year or in the final term before it, when the school asks which three subjects will be taken at Higher Level. The second time is halfway through the final year, when one of those Higher Levels is clearly costing more than it is returning and somebody asks whether it can be dropped. Both conversations are academic on the surface and financial underneath, and the financial part is almost never set out.

Here is the structure first. A Diploma candidate takes six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, with Higher Level courses published at 240 teaching hours and Standard Level at 150. Some students take four Higher Levels and two Standard Levels. Each subject is graded one to seven, with up to three further points available from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, to a maximum of 45. The Diploma requires at least 24 points together with several additional conditions, including minimum contributions from Higher Level subjects and minimum grades on the core, and your coordinator holds the current full list.

The cost consequence follows directly from the structure. A Higher Level course contains more content, in several subjects adds a third paper that Standard Level candidates do not sit, and demands a more developed Internal Assessment. Tutors who are fluent at that level are fewer, which is a supply fact rather than a marketing claim, and every published Dubai rate table puts the specialist band above the general one: AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor against AED 200 to 450 and above for a specialist, with a premium named tier reaching AED 650.

Which means the honest version of this guidance is not a list of which subjects are hard. It is an allocation question. A family funding one subject across the final year should be funding the Higher Level that carries the most consequence, and consequence is defined by two things: the university prerequisite the offer actually names, and the number of points the Diploma rules require from Higher Level subjects. Those two facts, not difficulty or enjoyment, decide where the money goes.

There is a second decision this page takes seriously, because almost nobody does: the honest case for moving a subject from Higher to Standard Level. Schools have deadlines for level changes and they pass quietly. A student carrying three Higher Levels at a grade 4 and one at a grade 6 may be better placed with two Higher Levels done well, and the point total can improve while the cost falls. Whether that is true depends on the university requirement, and it is arithmetic rather than opinion.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service, and at Higher Level that matters more than at Standard Level: the pool of people who can teach Higher Level Chemistry to a strong candidate is small enough that choosing from within driving distance of one community is not really choosing at all.

At a glance

  • Higher Level: 240 published hours, more content, often a third paper
  • Standard Level: 150 published hours, same grade scale, fewer components
  • The Diploma rules require minimum points from Higher Level subjects
  • Specialist Higher Level rates sit above the general Dubai band
  • Delivered online, one to one; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The level decision is made at one point in a longer sequence, and what comes before it changes how expensive it turns out to be. These are the three stages where it is decided, tested and sometimes reversed.

MYP 5 / Year 11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Before the Diploma begins

Levels are chosen before any Diploma content has been taught, which is the structural problem. The evidence available is MYP criterion marks or IGCSE grades, neither of which maps cleanly onto Higher Level demand. The cheapest useful work here is a marked task in the candidate subjects at Diploma-style difficulty.

Dubai schools run their option processes on their own timetables, often in the second term of Year 11, and the IGCSE or MYP results that would inform the choice arrive after it is made. Asking the coordinator what evidence the school uses, and when the choice can still be revised, is worth doing early.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

First Diploma year

The year the choice is tested. Internal examinations towards the end of the year are the first real measurement of whether a Higher Level is sustainable, and they arrive close to the school's deadline for level changes. A marked paper at that point is the most useful piece of evidence a family can hold.

This is also the cheapest year to fund a Higher Level subject properly, because content is being met for the first time and gaps have not compounded. The same money spent in the final year has to repair rather than prevent, which buys less.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Final Diploma year

The level is usually fixed by now, so the question becomes allocation: which Higher Level gets the funded hours. The extra paper at Higher Level and the Internal Assessment are the two components where targeted spending returns most, because both are narrow and both are frequently neglected.

University offers held by Dubai candidates commonly name specific Higher Level subjects and grades, which should determine the allocation. A student spending equally across six subjects when the offer rests on two Higher Levels is allocating by anxiety rather than by consequence.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below, each subject is described by what Higher Level adds over Standard Level and what that addition costs to support, because that is the comparison a family making this decision actually needs.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Higher Level adds substantial content including proof by induction and complex numbers, plus a third paper of extended investigative questions. The third paper is short, often unpractised and therefore the best-value target for funded hours in the subject.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Higher Level deepens the statistics and modelling and adds a third paper built on a long data investigation. Support costs here concentrate on written commentary rather than calculation, which is a cheaper fix than families expect.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Higher Level extends energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms considerably, and the Internal Assessment is expected to carry more analytical depth. One of the scarcest Higher Level specialisms in this market, which shows in the rate.

Physics

HL and SL

Higher Level adds content and mathematical demand together, which is why students strong in physics and weaker in algebra struggle disproportionately. Funding mathematics instead sometimes raises the physics grade more cheaply than funding physics.

Biology

HL and SL

Higher Level broadens the content substantially while the skill demands stay similar, which makes it a volume problem more than a difficulty problem. That makes self-study with periodic audits unusually viable and therefore cheap to support.

Economics

HL and SL

Higher Level adds quantitative components and a further paper element. Diagram precision and evaluation carry the marks at both levels, and those are short targeted blocks rather than year-long commitments.

History

HL and SL

Higher Level adds a regional depth study and a further written component, so the additional cost is essay volume. Structure teaches quickly and content is a reading task, which means funded hours should buy argument coaching and nothing else.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Higher Level adds a further written component and raises the expectation on comparative analysis. Because the gains come from timed practice and comparing a student's own drafts, a small number of well-marked sessions goes a long way.

Language B

HL and SL

Higher Level adds literary texts and raises the productive demand. Coverage in Dubai is thin outside the most common languages, which pushes the rate to the upper end of the specialist band for reasons of supply rather than difficulty.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to fund Higher Level support, described by cost and by what each one is actually for. All are delivered online, one to one.

Level decision block

Two or three sessions before the school's option or change deadline. The student attempts a marked task at Diploma Higher Level difficulty in the subject in question, and the tutor reports what the script shows against the level's demands. At published specialist rates that is roughly AED 600 to 1,350, which is small against the cost of carrying the wrong level for two years.

  • A marked task at the real level, not a conversation about ability
  • A written note naming what the script shows
  • Timed against the school's own change deadline
  • No obligation to continue once the decision is made

One Higher Level funded properly for a term

Twelve weekly sessions in a single Higher Level subject, each setting and marking work. At published Dubai bands of AED 200 to 450 an hour for specialist work, that is roughly AED 2,400 to 5,400 for the term. It should produce twelve marked artefacts and a raw mark trend on the subject's own papers.

  • Twelve sessions, one Higher Level subject, fixed end date
  • Work set and marked between sessions as standard
  • Raw marks logged on comparable papers each month
  • The subject's extra component covered explicitly, not implied

Component block on the Higher Level extras

Four sessions aimed only at what Higher Level adds: the third paper where one exists, the extra written component, or the deeper Internal Assessment analysis. Narrow, cheaper than a term, and often the best return available because these are the components students neglect most and schools cover least.

  • One component, four sessions, bracketed by marked attempts
  • Chosen from a marked script rather than from a feeling
  • Two raw marks reported side by side at the end
  • Written note of what remains after the block closes

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Higher Level actually adds

The published difference starts with time: Higher Level courses are set at 240 teaching hours and Standard Level at 150. That ninety-hour gap is filled with additional content, additional assessed components in several subjects, and a greater expectation of analytical depth in the Internal Assessment. It is not simply the same course taught harder, and treating it that way is the commonest planning error in the first Diploma year.

In mathematics and the sciences the clearest structural addition is a third paper at Higher Level, which Standard Level candidates do not sit. In mathematics that paper is short and investigative, awarding marks for setting out and justifying an approach rather than for reaching an answer. Because it is short and unlike the other papers, it is routinely under-practised, which makes it both a risk and the single best target for funded hours in the subject.

In the essay subjects the addition is usually volume and a further written component: a regional depth study in history, an extra piece of written work in English, quantitative elements in economics. In the sciences it is content breadth plus a higher mathematical demand, which is why a strong physicist with weak algebra finds Higher Level Physics harder than their physics knowledge predicts.

The table sets the two levels against each other on the points that change both a study plan and a tutoring budget. Confirm the component details for your child's specific subject against the current subject guide the school teaches from, because guides are revised and the pattern differs by subject.

02

The points arithmetic, and where Higher Level carries the Diploma

A Diploma total is six subject grades out of seven each, plus up to three points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, to a maximum of 45. The award of the Diploma requires at least 24 points, and there are further conditions attached, including minimum contributions from Higher Level subjects, minimum performance on the core, and limits on how many low grades a candidate may hold. Your coordinator holds the current list, and it is worth having it in front of you before any level decision.

The reason it matters financially is that the rules are not symmetric. Points from Higher Level subjects carry specific obligations that Standard Level points cannot satisfy, which means a candidate who is weak across their Higher Levels faces a different risk from one who is weak across their Standard Levels, even at the same total. A family deciding where to spend has to know which of those situations their child is in, and that comes from the rules plus the predicted grades, not from a general impression.

The second asymmetry is in how offers read the grades. An HL grade 5 and an SL grade 5 contribute the same point to the total and are not interchangeable to an admissions office that asked for a Higher Level subject. So a plan that raises the total while dropping the named Higher Level can satisfy the Diploma and fail the offer, which is an expensive way to be right.

The table works the arithmetic in the order a family should think about it. The last row is the one that most often changes a decision: find out what the offer actually requires before optimising anything.

What Higher Level support costs against Standard Level in Dubai

Published rates in this market do not advertise a Higher Level premium, and yet one exists in practice. The general band for a qualified online subject tutor is AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialist IB work sits at AED 200 to 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table, TutorChase quotes AED 270, and BartyED's premium named tier reaches AED 650. Higher Level work, especially in chemistry, Higher Level mathematics and the less common Language B options, is quoted towards the upper half of that range.

The reason is supply rather than packaging. Fewer people can teach Higher Level Chemistry to a candidate chasing a 7, and fewer still will have marked the Higher Level third paper in mathematics against the scheme. Scarcity sets the price. That is worth knowing because it also means the premium is real value where the specialism matters and pure cost where it does not: a Standard Level Biology student does not need the Higher Level specialist and should not be paying for one.

The volume side cuts the other way and is usually ignored. A Higher Level subject contains 240 published hours against 150, so even at the same rate it needs more support across two years, and families who budget per hour rather than per course are systematically surprised. Thinking in terms of a term of one subject, at roughly AED 2,400 to 5,400 at specialist rates for twelve sessions, makes the decision concrete.

The table compares what a term costs at each level and for each format. The right reading is not the cheapest row; it is the row that matches the component actually causing the loss.

04

Which Higher Level to fund when you can only fund one

  • Test one: which Higher Level does the offer actually name
  • Test two: is the candidate near a Diploma award threshold
  • Test three: where are the marks most recoverable, on evidence
  • Mathematics often wins because it carries other subjects with it

Three tests, applied in order, settle this better than any discussion of which subject is hardest. The first is the offer. If a university offer names a Higher Level subject and grade, that subject has a claim on the budget that nothing else does, because failing it loses the place regardless of the total. Get the offer wording in writing and read it literally rather than from memory.

The second test is the Diploma rules. Where the award conditions require a minimum contribution from Higher Level subjects, a candidate sitting close to that line has a structural risk that a strong Standard Level cannot offset. A coordinator can tell you in one conversation whether your child is near any of those thresholds, and being near one changes the allocation immediately.

The third test is recoverability, which needs one marked paper per candidate subject and nothing more. A Higher Level where marks are leaking to command terms, unwritten method, missing units and the neglected third paper is highly recoverable and converts funded hours quickly. A Higher Level where whole topics are absent needs more time than a term and should be approached with that stated honestly.

Run those three tests and the answer is usually unambiguous, and it is frequently not the subject the family arrived worried about. The most common outcome in practice is that the funded hours should go to Higher Level Mathematics, because it both carries offers and underpins the physics and chemistry grades, so one tutor's work appears in more than one result.

05

Moving from Higher to Standard Level: the deadline and the cost

This is the decision families most often make too late, and the reason is that nobody tells them there is a clock. Schools set their own deadlines for level changes, usually in the first Diploma year, and after that the change is at best difficult and at worst unavailable. A student struggling in the first term who waits until the mock results has frequently waited past the point of choice.

The arithmetic of a change is not obviously bad. A candidate carrying a Higher Level at a grade 4 with the content still unsecured may well achieve a grade 6 at Standard Level, which improves the total, reduces the workload across the other five subjects, and lowers the tutoring cost because Standard Level support sits in the cheaper band. For a student whose university route does not require that subject at Higher Level, that is simply a better plan.

The arithmetic is bad in one specific case, and it is the case that matters: where an offer names that subject at Higher Level. Then a change satisfies the Diploma and fails the application, and no point total compensates. There is also a structural condition to check, since the award conditions require a minimum contribution from Higher Level subjects and a candidate cannot reduce below the permitted Higher Level count.

The table runs the decision in order with the evidence each row needs. The one thing worth doing immediately, whatever the outcome, is asking the coordinator for the school's level-change deadline, because that single date determines whether this is a decision or a regret.

THE LEVEL-CHANGE DECISION, IN ORDER

4Is the grade likely to rise at Standard Level?A marked paper and the subject teacherContent is the problem rather than technique
5What does the change free up?The family's own timetable and budgetHours and money released to a subject that carries an offer
06

University prerequisites, and the expensive version of getting this wrong

Competitive courses specify subjects at Higher Level, and the specification is usually literal. Medicine routes commonly name chemistry and often biology at Higher Level. Engineering routes name mathematics and physics. Economics and business courses frequently name mathematics. Where a course names a subject at Higher Level, a Standard Level grade in the same subject is rarely accepted as a substitute, however high.

For UAE universities and for institutions abroad alike, the only reliable source is the programme's own published requirement for the intake in question, and it should be read rather than remembered. Requirements change between cycles, they differ between campuses of the same institution, and they are sometimes more specific than families expect, naming a minimum grade in the subject as well as a total. No requirement for any named university is reproduced here, because requirements that go stale on a tutoring page are worse than no information.

Equivalency is a separate matter and is frequently conflated with admissions. Recognition of a foreign secondary certificate in the UAE is handled by the Ministry of Education through its own process, which IB Gram does not perform and no tutoring service should present as something it can secure. For the British track the published requirements are specific; no IB points threshold is quoted here, because none has been verified from an official Ministry source for this page.

The practical consequence for the level decision is simple. Before dropping or de-prioritising a Higher Level, read the offer or the published requirement for every route the student is considering, including the fallback routes. A decision that works for the first-choice course and eliminates the insurance choice is the expensive version of this, and it happens every year.

07

What moves a Higher Level quote in this emirate

Scarcity is the main driver, and it is subject-specific rather than general. Higher Level Chemistry, Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and the less widely taught Language B options are the combinations where the Dubai pool is thinnest, and a thin pool means the upper half of the specialist band. That is a supply fact a family can work with: booking those subjects early costs the same per hour and secures a materially better match.

Travel is the second driver and the one that can be removed entirely. Every published Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one above online, with Bestimate recording AED 180 to 350 for a home visit and independent tutors quoted up to AED 500 once travel is priced in. At Higher Level the cost of insisting on in-home delivery is not only money: it narrows the pool to whoever will drive, which at this level often means nobody with the right specialism.

The third driver is whether the quote includes marking. For a Higher Level subject the marked artefact is the product, particularly on the extra paper and the Internal Assessment, and setting and marking that work takes real time outside the session. Two quotes at AED 300 an hour can differ by a third in real value on that one line, and the only way to see it is to ask in writing.

A fourth, smaller driver is timing within the two-year cycle. The first Diploma year is the cheapest place to fund a Higher Level, because content is being met rather than repaired. The final term is the most expensive, because availability is thinnest and the work that remains is lower-yield. Nobody publishes a seasonal rate, and the real cost still rises.

08

Buying this honestly

Four questions make any Higher Level quote comparable. What level is the tutor actually teaching, and have they marked the extra component where one exists. Is setting and marking work between sessions included. How many sessions, and what is the end date. And what will not be covered. The fourth question is the one that separates an honest plan from a hopeful one, and a provider who answers it in writing is worth more than one who is cheaper.

Two things are worth refusing. A package that quotes Higher and Standard Level at the same rate without saying which tutor teaches which, because the specialism is the thing being bought at Higher Level. And any claim that a particular level guarantees a particular grade or a particular university outcome, which nobody can support.

One thing is worth insisting on: that the first session produces a marked artefact at the real level rather than a conversation about ability. A Higher Level script marked against the published scheme tells a family more in one hour than a term of reassurance, and it is also the only evidence a school will take seriously in a level-change discussion.

Every AED figure on this page belongs to the provider or source that published it, including Unitors, TutorChase, Bestimate and BartyED, and none of them is an IB Gram price. Our rate is quoted after the free trial lesson, with the level, the session length and the marking inclusion stated. No success rate, average point score or satisfaction figure appears here, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method, and no tutor can promise a grade at either level.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Higher Level specialist supply is the thing location actually affects, because an in-home pool is limited to whoever will drive. These notes describe what that means across the city.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills

Large Diploma cohorts with heavy Higher Level science and mathematics uptake. In-home quotes here sit at the top of the published AED 180 to 500 band because of distance between gates, and the local specialist pool is the binding constraint rather than the rate.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Dense school provision and short commutes, so a 16:30 start is realistic. Useful for the third paper at Higher Level, which needs only an hour and benefits from being a standing slot rather than an occasional one.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Households frequently containing a Diploma candidate and an IGCSE sibling. Where the budget covers one subject, the Higher Level that a university offer names should win, and that is a conversation worth having before the final year.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Long eastern commutes make in-home Higher Level support both expensive and thinly supplied, since few specialists will make the drive on a weekday evening. This is where the online price and choice advantage is widest.

Downtown, Business Bay and Al Jaddaf

Central towers near two continuum IB schools, with quiet study space scarce during the mock period. Higher Level Internal Assessment work splits well into two shorter sessions, which suits apartment living.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University-belt families with strong Higher Level mathematics and science uptake. Demand concentrates on the third paper and on Internal Assessment analysis, both short and both commonly funded too late.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the deadline and the award conditions

Ask the Diploma coordinator for the school's level-change deadline and the current Diploma award conditions in full. Those two pieces of information determine whether this is a live decision and where the structural risk sits. Both are free and both are usually obtained in one email.

  2. 02

    Read every offer literally

Collect the exact wording of each university requirement the student is working towards, including the fallback routes, and check whether a Higher Level subject is named. A plan that satisfies the first choice and eliminates the insurance choice is the expensive version of this decision.

  3. 03

Produce one marked script at the real level

A task or paper at genuine Higher Level difficulty, sat under timing and marked against the published scheme. The script tells you whether the problem is content, command terms, method or pacing. It is also the only evidence a school will weigh in a level conversation.

  4. 04

Fund one subject, name the component

Allocate the budget to the Higher Level that the offer names or that carries the most recoverable marks, and state which component the hours target: the third paper, the extra written component, or the Internal Assessment. A quote that names a subject but no component is a subscription.

  5. 05

Review on raw marks each month

Two comparable papers at the same level under the same conditions, a month apart, with their raw marks side by side. If the second has not moved, change the method rather than adding hours at a specialist rate, which is the most expensive way to persist with something that is not working.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Level priced separately from subject

Higher Level is a different brief, with more content and often an extra component, and the tutor and the rate should reflect that. A quote that prices Higher and Standard Level identically has not told you which tutor is teaching which, which is the thing being bought.

The offer decides the allocation

Where a budget covers one subject, it goes to the Higher Level a university offer actually names, read literally and in writing. Optimising a point total while dropping a named Higher Level satisfies the Diploma and loses the place, which is the costliest outcome available.

We will tell you to drop a Higher Level

Where no offer names the subject, the award conditions still hold and the content is the real problem, moving to Standard Level can raise the total and lower the cost at once. Saying so loses us a specialist-rate term and is frequently the right advice.

The neglected extra component is the best value

The third paper at Higher Level, the extra written component and the deeper Internal Assessment analysis are narrow, high-density and routinely under-covered. Four bracketed sessions on one of them often returns more than a term of general subject support.

No invented thresholds or outcomes

No university requirement and no Ministry equivalency figure for the IB is reproduced here, because requirements go stale and the IB threshold could not be verified from an official source. No success rate or average score appears either, for the same reason.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What actually differs between Higher Level and Standard Level?+

Published teaching hours, to begin with: Higher Level courses are set at 240 hours and Standard Level at 150. That gap is filled with additional content, an extra assessed component in several subjects, and a greater expectation of analytical depth in the Internal Assessment. In mathematics and the sciences the clearest addition is a third paper that Standard Level candidates do not sit. In the essay subjects it tends to be a further written component plus content breadth. Confirm the exact pattern for your child's subject against the current subject guide the school teaches from.

How many Higher Level subjects does my child have to take?+

The usual pattern is six subjects with three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, and some students take four Higher Levels with two Standard Levels. The Diploma award conditions also require a minimum contribution from Higher Level subjects, which means a candidate cannot simply reduce the count to lighten the load. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the current award conditions in full before considering any change, because the conditions, rather than the subject count alone, are what constrain the options.

Does a Higher Level grade count for more in the points total?+

In the raw arithmetic, no: each subject contributes one to seven points regardless of level, with up to three further points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, to a maximum of 45. In practice the levels are not interchangeable for two reasons. The award conditions attach specific obligations to Higher Level performance, and university offers that name a Higher Level subject rarely accept the same grade at Standard Level. So an HL 5 and an SL 5 are worth the same point and are not worth the same thing.

Why does Higher Level tutoring cost more per hour in Dubai?+

Supply rather than packaging. Fewer tutors can teach Higher Level Chemistry to a candidate chasing a 7, and fewer still have marked the Higher Level third paper in mathematics against the published scheme. Published Dubai bands put a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300 an hour and a specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, with a premium named tier reaching AED 650. Higher Level work in the scarcer subjects is quoted towards the upper half of that. A Standard Level student does not need that specialist and should not pay for one.

We can fund one subject only. Which Higher Level should it be?+

Apply three tests in order. First, which Higher Level does a university offer actually name, read literally from the written wording. Second, is the candidate near any of the Diploma award thresholds that depend on Higher Level performance, which the coordinator can tell you. Third, where are marks most recoverable, which needs one marked paper per candidate subject. In practice the answer is often Higher Level Mathematics, because it both appears in offers and underpins physics and chemistry, so the work shows up in more than one grade.

Can my child move from Higher to Standard Level mid-course?+

Schools set their own deadlines for level changes, usually within the first Diploma year, and after that the change becomes difficult or unavailable. So the first thing to establish is the date. If there is still time, the decision turns on whether any offer names the subject at Higher Level, whether the award conditions would still be met, and whether the grade would genuinely rise at Standard Level. Where no offer names it and content is the real problem, a change can raise the total and reduce the cost simultaneously.

Will a university accept Standard Level where it asked for Higher Level?+

Rarely, and it should never be assumed. Where a course names a subject at Higher Level, the specification is usually literal and a Standard Level grade in the same subject is not treated as a substitute however high it is. The only reliable source is the programme's own published requirement for the intake in question, which can differ between cycles and between campuses. Read it rather than recall it, and check the fallback routes as well as the first choice, because losing an insurance offer is the expensive version of this error.

Is taking four Higher Level subjects ever sensible?+

For some students, yes, and the usual reasons are a genuinely demanding course requirement or unusual strength across four areas. The cost should be understood first. Four Higher Levels means roughly 960 published teaching hours against 870 for the standard pattern, more assessed components, and a tutoring budget that cannot cover them all at specialist rates. The failure mode is four Higher Levels at grade 5 where three at grade 6 and one strong Standard Level would have produced a better total and a less exhausted student.

Does Higher Level add a third paper in every subject?+

No, and assuming it does leads to misdirected revision. Mathematics and several sciences add a third paper at Higher Level; the essay subjects more often add a further written component or a depth study instead. The pattern is set in each subject guide and guides are periodically revised, so check your child's own subject against the version the school teaches from. The practical point is the same either way: whatever Higher Level adds is usually the least practised part of the course and therefore the best target for funded hours.

Is the Internal Assessment different at Higher Level?+

It is assessed against the same criteria in most subjects, and in practice the expectation of analytical depth is higher, which is where Higher Level candidates lose marks. The work is the same shape and the standard is not. For a budget, this means a Higher Level draft needs a reader who knows the level rather than a generalist, and that four focused sessions on the draft and its evaluation section is often better value than a term of general subject support, because the Internal Assessment mark is banked before any revision begins.

Do you come to our villa in Dubai Hills for Higher Level sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. At Higher Level the argument for online is stronger than at any other level. The pool of people who can teach Higher Level Chemistry or the Higher Level mathematics third paper properly is small, and restricting it to those willing to drive to one community at a specific hour is not really a choice. It also removes the travel premium in every published Dubai rate table.

How many hours does a Higher Level subject need across the two years?+

No honest general figure exists, and the useful frame is a term at a time. Twelve weekly sessions in one Higher Level subject, at published specialist bands of AED 200 to 450 an hour, is roughly AED 2,400 to 5,400 and should produce twelve marked artefacts plus a raw mark trend. Whether a second term is needed should be decided from those raw marks rather than booked in advance. Published course hours of 240 at Higher Level against 150 at Standard Level explain why the volume is higher, but they are school hours, not tutoring hours.

My child is predicted a 4 at Higher Level. Is Standard Level the cheaper route to the same points?+

Often yes, and it can be the better route academically too, provided three conditions hold. No university offer names that subject at Higher Level. The Diploma award conditions would still be met with the reduced Higher Level profile, which the coordinator must confirm. And the marked evidence shows content as the problem rather than technique, since technique improves at Higher Level without a level change. Where all three hold, a grade 6 at Standard Level improves the total, lightens the workload across five other subjects and sits in the cheaper tutoring band.

Which Higher Level specialisms are thinnest on supply, and does that change the rate?+

On current supply, Higher Level Chemistry, Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and the less widely taught Language B options are the thinnest. That is a scarcity observation rather than a difficulty ranking, and it has a practical consequence: for those subjects, booking in the first Diploma year secures a materially better match at the same hourly figure than booking in the final term. Where no specialist is free, the honest options are a named waiting date, an adjacent component a current tutor teaches well, or being told we cannot help.

What should a Higher Level quote state in writing?+

Four things. Which level the tutor actually teaches, and whether they have marked the extra component where the subject has one. Whether setting and marking work between sessions is included, since at Higher Level the marked artefact is the product. The number of sessions and the end date. And what the block will not cover. The fourth is the one that distinguishes a plan from a subscription, and a provider who will put it in writing is usually worth more than one who is simply cheaper per hour.

Settle the deadline and the offer, then spend

Before funding anything, get two documents. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the school's level-change deadline and the current award conditions in full, and collect the exact written wording of every university requirement your child is working towards, fallbacks included. Then produce one marked script at genuine Higher Level difficulty, so the problem can be named as content, command terms, method or pacing rather than guessed at. Book the free trial lesson and spend it on that script. The quote that follows should name the subject, the level, the component, the number of sessions, the end date and what it will not reach.
