IB & IGCSE in Jebel Ali

What a Jebel Ali parent is really asking when they search for an IB home tutor

The phrase "IB home tutor in Jebel Ali" is almost always typed by a parent who has just read a report card. Something is wrong in one subject, or in two, and the school's comment was polite enough to be useless. The parent does not actually want a stranger in the living room. They want the problem named and fixed, and "home tutor" is simply the phrase that has always meant private help.

So this page answers the subject question rather than the logistics question. An IB Diploma grade is built out of named components with published weightings. Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 carry fixed percentages. The Internal Assessment is marked against lettered criteria, each with its own mark ceiling. A student losing marks is losing them somewhere specific, and that place can be found in an hour of looking at their last two assessments against the mark scheme.

IB Gram delivers that work as live one-to-one online tuition to Jebel Ali addresses. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visiting is a service we run only in India. The reason is not cost. It is that a Jebel Ali family needs a Chemistry HL specialist or a Maths Analysis and Approaches specialist, and the pool of people who both teach that subject properly and are willing to drive to Jebel Ali Village at 5pm on a Tuesday is small enough to be a lottery.

Jebel Ali sits at the industrial end of Dubai. The port and the free zone dominate it, and the residential communities that feed its schools spread outward into Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens, Dubai Investments Park, Green Community and Dubai South. That geography matters for one reason only: a family here has a longer drive to most of the city's tutoring centres than a family in Jumeirah does, which makes the travel premium a real number rather than a theoretical one.

Dubai's private schools are inspected by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which the UAE government describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA reported 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 curricula, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for 7% of enrolment. That 7% is a minority inside the emirate but a large absolute number, and it is concentrated in a handful of IB continuum schools.

What follows is the syllabus detail, the mark-scheme detail and the market pricing that the pages currently ranking for this search leave out. Read the assessment tables with your child's last report next to you, and start with the component that lost the most marks rather than the subject that caused the most arguments at home.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB runs as a continuum, and a Jebel Ali student may be in any part of it. The Diploma Programme is where most tutoring requests land, because it is where external examinations and fixed component weightings arrive at once. The programme below that matters for a different reason: the habits it does or does not build.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject is graded 1-7 and the core adds up to three bonus points, for a maximum of 45. Grades come from externally marked papers plus an Internal Assessment marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. HL subjects carry extra content and, in the sciences and maths, an extra paper.

Jebel Ali and Dubai South students mostly reach the DP through one of the IB continuum schools in the Dubai Investments Park and Sustainable City belt, or by moving across from an IGCSE school at 16. The second route is the one that produces most of our requests, because an IGCSE A* in Mathematics does not predict an HL Analysis and Approaches 7.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria, each lettered A to D and each worth up to eight marks. There are no external papers for most students; the final grade is a judgement against descriptors. MYP 5 ends with the Personal Project, a long independent piece with its own criteria, and some schools enter students for optional eAssessments.

The MYP is where Jebel Ali families most often ask whether anything is actually wrong, because criterion grades out of eight do not map onto the percentages they grew up with. A criterion C score of 5 means a specific thing in the descriptors. Reading the school's own criterion report with a tutor is usually more useful than a term of general maths practice.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, organised around transdisciplinary themes rather than subject periods, and finishing with the Year 6 Exhibition. Assessment is formative and portfolio-based. There is no external test, which makes gaps in number fluency and reading stamina easy to miss until a child meets the MYP's written assessment demands.

Several schools serving Green Community and Dubai Investments Park run the full PYP-to-DP continuum, so a child may spend fourteen years inside IB assessment language. Tutoring at this stage is almost always arithmetic fluency, handwriting speed and reading comprehension rather than anything IB-specific.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining at least two DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, language development and a personal and professional skills course. It is offered by far fewer UAE schools than the Diploma, and it changes which parts of a student's workload are externally examined.

The CP is rare across Dubai and rarer still in the Jebel Ali catchment, but it is worth knowing it exists before assuming a sixth-form offer is the full Diploma. If your child is on the CP, the DP courses inside it are examined exactly as DP courses are, and that is where tutoring applies.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Jebel Ali families ask about most, with what each one actually assesses and the place marks go missing. The descriptions are deliberately specific: a tutor who cannot name the component is not going to move the grade.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency under time pressure, calculus and proof. HL adds Paper 3, a long problem-solving paper that rewards students who can carry an unfamiliar structure through several parts. Marks are lost in method lines that were never written down, so the examiner cannot award the working.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and graphical technology. The calculator is central rather than incidental, and marks go missing when students quote a regression result without stating the model or the variable. HL adds a third paper built around extended modelling tasks.

Physics

HL and SL

Built around themes from motion and matter through to fields and nuclear physics, with HL extensions inside each. The scientific investigation is the internally assessed component. Uncertainty treatment and graph gradients with units are where otherwise strong candidates shed marks.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and reactivity, with organic chemistry and energetics as the usual pinch points. Paper 1 mixes multiple choice with data-based questions; Paper 2 is extended response. Mechanism arrows drawn from the wrong atom cost marks that content knowledge cannot recover.

Biology

HL and SL

Unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and continuity. Command terms drive the mark: "outline" and "explain" are not interchangeable, and students who answer every six-mark question as a list cap themselves well below a 7.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is unseen textual analysis; Paper 2 is comparative essay on studied works; the Individual Oral links a global issue to two texts. HL adds the written essay. The common failure is paraphrase where analysis of technique and effect was wanted.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, assessed through papers that demand accurate, labelled diagrams. The Internal Assessment is a portfolio of commentaries on published news articles, and weak article choice limits the mark before any writing happens.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools such as the Ansoff matrix and break-even analysis applied to real organisations, with a research project as the Internal Assessment. Marks go to candidates who evaluate rather than describe, and who use the data supplied in the case study.

Computer Science

HL and SL

System fundamentals, computer organisation, networks and programming in a chosen language, plus a solution-development project. Students who can code but cannot explain algorithm complexity in words lose the written-paper marks.

Arabic B and Arabic ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Productive and receptive skills across prescribed themes. Relevant in Dubai because KHDA requires Arabic in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, and a DP language B grade sits alongside that requirement rather than replacing it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every request that comes from this catchment. The choice is driven by how close the next assessment is and whether the problem is a content gap or an examination-technique gap.

Weekly one-to-one by subject

A fixed slot with one tutor in one subject, running through the term. Best when a report card has named a subject and the gap is content rather than nerves. The tutor works from the student's own school scheme of work, so the sequence matches what the class is doing rather than running in parallel to it.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same tutor each week
  • Works from the student's school scheme of work
  • Written note after each session naming what was covered
  • Timed to Gulf Standard Time, after the school run

Internal Assessment and Extended Essay coaching

Structured sessions on the student's own draft, read against the published criteria for that subject. The tutor explains what criterion B is actually asking for and marks the draft against the descriptors. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of the work, because that would be a malpractice matter for the student.

  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Research question narrowing and method design
  • Referencing and citation checks against the subject guide
  • No drafting, ghostwriting or completion of coursework

Past-paper and examination technique blocks

Short intensive runs in the weeks before mocks or the examination session, built entirely around timed questions and mark schemes. The work is diagnostic: the student attempts a paper under time, the tutor marks it against the published scheme, and the next session attacks the two or three mark-losing habits the marking exposed.

  • Timed papers marked against the official scheme
  • Command-term drills by subject
  • A written list of the specific habits costing marks
  • Links to official past-paper sources rather than copies

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jebel Ali

01

The Diploma is a sum of named components, and so is the problem

An IB Diploma grade is not a general impression. Each subject grade comes from a fixed set of components with published weightings, and each component is marked against published criteria. If your child's Chemistry grade fell from a 6 to a 4, the fall happened inside one or two of those components. Finding out which one takes one session and the last two assessment papers.

This is the single biggest difference between a subject specialist and a general tutor. A general tutor will reteach the topic the student says they found hard. A specialist asks to see the marked script, counts where the marks went, and often finds the topic was understood but the answer was structured in a way the mark scheme could not reward. Those are different problems with different fixes, and only one of them is solved by more content.

The Internal Assessment is the clearest case. It is marked against lettered criteria, each carrying its own maximum. A student can write a technically correct investigation and still cap themselves because one criterion was never addressed at all. A tutor who knows the criteria reads the draft and says, in plain words, that criterion is worth marks and your draft does not engage with it. No amount of enthusiasm substitutes for that.

For Jebel Ali families the practical point is that this diagnostic work does not need anyone in the room. It needs a marked script on a shared screen and someone who knows the scheme. That is exactly what a live online session does well.

Subject by subject: the mark-scheme traps that recur in this catchment

  • Maths: method lines skipped because the calculator gave the answer
  • Chemistry: mechanism arrows originating from the wrong atom or bond
  • Physics: gradients and uncertainties stated without units
  • Biology: six-mark questions answered as unconnected bullet lists
  • English A: paraphrase of the extract instead of analysis of technique
  • Economics: diagrams drawn without labelled axes or shifted curves

Across the students we see from Jebel Ali, Al Furjan and Dubai Investments Park, the same small set of errors appears again and again, and almost none of them are knowledge errors. They are habits formed in a classroom where the teacher reads generously and the mark scheme does not.

In Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, the recurring loss is unwritten working. A student arrives at the right value on the calculator and writes only the answer. The mark scheme awards method marks for the line that was skipped. Over a full paper this is routinely the difference between a 5 and a 6, and it is fixable in three sessions because it is a discipline rather than a concept.

In the sciences, uncertainty and units carry a surprising share of the marks. A gradient quoted without units, an uncertainty propagated by guesswork, a graph with a line of best fit drawn through the origin because it looked tidier. In Chemistry, organic mechanisms drawn with the arrow starting at the wrong place cost the whole mark even when the product is right. In Physics, the word "explain" means a causal chain, and a correct formula with no chain earns part marks at best.

In the essay subjects, the trap is paraphrase. English A Paper 1 asks for analysis of how a text produces its effect. A student who retells the extract accurately and then adds an adjective has described, not analysed. Economics loses marks to unlabelled axes. Business Management loses them to students who never return to the case-study data they were given.

03

Past-paper work that changes a grade, and past-paper work that does not

Most students in this catchment have already done past papers. Many have done a great many of them, and their grade has not moved. The reason is almost always that the papers were done untimed, self-marked, and then filed. That is practice in the sense that playing a piece badly is practice.

Past-paper work that changes a grade has three features. It is timed, with the clock enforced to the real duration. It is marked by someone against the official mark scheme, not by the student against their own memory of what they meant. And the marking produces a short written list of the specific habits that cost marks, which the next session attacks directly rather than moving on to a fresh paper.

The second and third features are where a tutor is doing something the student cannot do alone. Self-marking systematically over-rewards, because the student knows what they intended to write. An examiner-literate reader marks what is on the page. When a student sees two marks withheld for a missing unit, three times, the habit changes. That is the mechanism, and it is unglamorous.

A practical note on sources: IB, Cambridge and Pearson papers are copyright material. We reference and link the official sources and work from the school's own licensed copies. We do not host, supply or distribute question papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, and any site offering you unreleased material should be treated with real suspicion rather than curiosity.

What IB tutoring costs around Jebel Ali, and who charges what

Most pages ranking for this search publish no price at all. Two of the better-known ones quote US dollars, a currency no Dubai family pays a tutor in. So here are the AED bands, attributed, as of October 2026, with the clear statement that these are market rates and not an IB Gram price list.

At the bottom of the market, EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 per hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33-52, both for online lessons usually delivered by university students or early-career tutors. In the middle, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200 per hour for a qualified subject tutor online. TutorChase quotes around AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate table puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180-350 and specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level tutors at AED 200-450 and above. At the premium end, BartyED publishes AED 650.

Read those bands as a ladder of what you are buying rather than a ladder of quality. At the lowest band you are usually hiring a capable undergraduate who can get a Year 9 through a worksheet. They are not reading an HL Chemistry draft against criterion D. The AED 650 figure usually attaches to a named individual with examiner or senior-teacher credentials and a waiting list.

The in-home band is the interesting one for Jebel Ali. The AED 180-350 range includes the tutor's travel, and the travel from most of Dubai to Jebel Ali Village at 5pm is not twenty minutes. That premium buys you presence in the room. It does not buy you a wider choice of specialist, and for a single HL subject the specialist is the thing that matters.

Online one-to-one versus an in-home tutor, priced honestly for a Jebel Ali address

The honest comparison is not online against in-home in the abstract. It is online against in-home from a Jebel Ali address specifically, because that is where the travel variable bites. A tutor living in Mirdif who takes a Jebel Ali Village booking is committing to a round trip that can approach two hours in term-time evening traffic. That cost appears in the rate, in the limited number of slots offered, and in the cancellation rate.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all. We say that plainly rather than burying it, because two competitors in this market route UAE parents to an Indian phone number without mentioning that delivery is remote. Our in-home service exists only in India. For the UAE, lessons are live, one-to-one and over video, with screen sharing so the tutor and student work on the same script at the same time.

What the online format gives a Jebel Ali family is selection. Instead of choosing among the subject tutors who will drive to Dubai Investments Park, you choose among all the specialists in that subject. For a common need such as IGCSE Mathematics, the difference is modest. For Physics HL, Economics HL or Arabic B, it is the difference between a specialist and a near-miss.

The format has real limitations and it is worth naming them. A student who will not sit at a desk without an adult present does better with a person in the room. Very young children lose focus faster on a screen. And a weak home internet connection turns a 60-minute lesson into 45. Those are the cases where in-home genuinely wins, and if your child is one of them you should hire locally rather than take our word for it.

Academic honesty: what a tutor may do with an IA, an Extended Essay or a TOK essay

  • A tutor explains criteria; the student addresses them
  • A tutor marks a draft; the student revises it
  • A tutor teaches method; the student designs and runs it
  • No drafting, no rewriting to completion, no supplied data
  • Every sentence submitted must have been typed by the student

This matters more than anything else on this page, because getting it wrong ends a student's Diploma. The IB treats work submitted as the student's own when it is not as malpractice, and the consequence can be the loss of the qualification rather than a mark penalty. Parents who do not know the line are vulnerable to services that cross it.

There are sites in this market that sell completed Internal Assessments. One of them advertises them at AED 3,750. What is being sold is not tutoring. It is a document that, if submitted, exposes the student to an investigation they cannot win, because the IB's own authenticity checks exist precisely for this. No tutoring relationship is worth that risk, and no price makes it worth it.

The legitimate boundary is clear and it is generous. A tutor may explain what each lettered criterion asks for. A tutor may read the student's own draft and say which criteria it does not yet address. A tutor may teach the subject content the investigation needs, help narrow a research question from unanswerable to answerable, explain referencing conventions, and discuss method design. A tutor may mark a draft against the descriptors and explain the marking.

A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite a paragraph into their own prose, supply a research question wholesale, produce the data, or edit the piece to a finished state. The test we use is simple: at the end of the session, every sentence in the document must have been typed by the student. If a tutor ever offers you more than that, decline, and tell the school.

07

KHDA, the school report and what an inspection band actually tells you

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which the UAE government describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a band for each school on a six-point scale running from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Parents in this catchment read those bands closely, and they are useful, but they are not a statement about your child.

An inspection band is a judgement about a school as a whole: teaching quality, student outcomes across the age range, leadership, inclusion. A Very Good school can have one department running thin in a particular HL subject, and a Good school can have an outstanding Physics teacher. When a family in Al Furjan asks whether their child's subject difficulty is the school's fault, the inspection band almost never answers the question. The marked scripts do.

Two other KHDA facts are worth knowing here. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. KHDA also requires schools to ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects.

One thing IB Gram is not: KHDA approved. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with physical premises in Dubai, and we do not hold one and do not operate premises in the UAE. Any tutoring service describing itself as KHDA-approved tutors should be asked to show the permit number.

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach privately in the UAE?

  • Permit route: MoHRE private tuition work permit, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • The UAE government states it is granted free of charge for two years
  • Eligible: school and sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, students aged 15-18
  • Operating without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule is published
  • Do not engage your child's own school teacher for paid private tuition

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated, and a surprising number of pages in this market either ignore the point or imply it does not apply. It does. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The UAE government states that the permit is granted free of charge for two years.

Eligibility is broad. The government lists teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, publishes no fee, lists a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

The consequence of skipping it is real: the government states that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so we do not quote a figure, and you should be sceptical of pages that do. In Abu Dhabi there is an additional layer, with ADEK's professional-ethics rules reported as barring private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school.

The practical point for a Jebel Ali parent hiring an individual directly: ask whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition permit, and ask before the first lesson rather than after. A tutor who has one will say so without hesitation, because it costs nothing to hold. And never ask your child's own class teacher to tutor them privately for a fee; the permit's code of conduct and ADEK's ethics rules both point the other way.

Getting started, including what happens when no specialist is free

The process is short and the first step produces something useful whether or not you continue. Send the subject, the level, the school and - this is the part that matters - a photograph of the most recent marked assessment. A marked script tells us more in two minutes than a twenty-minute phone call about how the term has gone.

We then match a tutor by subject and level, not by availability. If the request is IGCSE Mathematics we will usually have several options within a day. If it is Physics HL with a scientific investigation due in three weeks, or Arabic B at Higher Level, the pool is narrower and the honest answer may be two or three days. We would rather tell you that than put a general science tutor in front of an HL Physics draft.

Occasionally the honest answer is that no suitable specialist has a slot at the time you need. When that happens we say so and offer the alternatives: a different weekday slot with the right specialist, a shorter block until a regular slot opens, or nothing at all with a suggestion of what to look for locally. Nobody in this market publishes what happens when they cannot help, which is why it is worth saying.

The trial lesson is free and is a real diagnostic lesson rather than a sales call: the tutor works through the marked script with the student and writes up what they found. After that you decide. There is no package to commit to before the trial and no card required to book it.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Jebel Ali

Jebel Ali is a working district with residential communities wrapped around it. Families from all of these places share the same school catchment and the same long drive to central Dubai, which is why online delivery changes the arithmetic here more than it does in Jumeirah.

Jebel Ali Village

The older low-rise residential pocket, close to the original school sites. Short internal drives, but anything in central Dubai means Sheikh Zayed Road at the wrong hour.

Al Furjan

Villa and townhouse community north of Jebel Ali, served by its own schools and by the metro extension. Heavy demand for IGCSE and DP maths help from Year 10 upwards.

Discovery Gardens

Dense apartment community with a mixed international population. Flats mean a tutoring session competes with siblings for quiet space, which is a real factor in scheduling.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds several of the schools this catchment relies on, including an IB continuum school and an American-curriculum school. Many families here live within walking distance of the school gate.

Green Community

Low-rise villas and apartments inside Dubai Investments Park, popular with families who want a short school run. The nearest neighbour community to Jebel Ali for school-choice purposes.

Dubai South

The newest part of the catchment, built around the Expo site and Al Maktoum airport, with schools opening as the population arrives. Distances inside Dubai South are large even by Dubai standards.

Emaar South

Golf-course villa community inside Dubai South. Residents typically drive 20-30 minutes to school, so a 4pm in-home session was never realistic even before anyone priced it.

Dubai Production City

Mixed residential and media-business district on the eastern edge of the cluster, feeding into both the Jebel Ali and the Motor City school sets.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jebel Ali

Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park

The core school set for this catchment mixes UK curriculum, Indian curriculum, SABIS and a full IB continuum school. The practical consequence is that one family's two children may sit entirely different assessment systems in the same academic year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, level and a marked script

One message with the subject, HL or SL, the school and a photograph of the last marked assessment. The script is the useful part: it shows where marks were actually lost rather than where the student felt uncertain.

  2. 02

We match on subject and level

A specialist in that exact subject and level, not the nearest available generalist. Common subjects are usually matched within a day; narrow HL subjects and Arabic B can take two or three. We tell you which case you are in.

  3. 03

    A free diagnostic trial lesson

A real lesson, online and one-to-one, working through the marked script. The tutor writes up what they found and what the first month should target. No card details and no package commitment to book it.

  4. 04

A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

The same tutor at the same time each week, set after the school run rather than squeezed into it. Sessions move for mocks, examinations and Ramadan timings, which in practice means most families shift at least once a year.

  5. 05

    Written notes you can check

After each session a short note of what was covered and what the student is to do before the next one. It is there so you can see progress against the original diagnosis rather than relying on your child's summary of the hour.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the component, not the postcode

A tutor is chosen because they teach that subject at that level and know its mark scheme. Geography is irrelevant to an online lesson, which removes the single biggest constraint on specialist choice for families out at Jebel Ali and Dubai South.

Market rates published, with sources

The AED bands on this page are attributed to the competitors and rate guides that published them, with the month we read them. No page in this market cites a source for a single AED figure, which makes an unsourced number easy to print and impossible to check.

A hard line on coursework

Tutors teach, explain criteria and mark drafts. They do not write, rewrite or complete an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay. Services selling finished coursework in this market expose the student to a malpractice finding they cannot recover from.

Honest about what we do not do

There are no IB Gram home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, and no claim of KHDA, ADEK, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, because we hold none. Every delivery claim on this page is one we can meet.

Regulatory facts, cited to the authority

The permit position, the equivalency rules and the regulator map come from u.ae, MoHRE and KHDA's own documents, and we link out rather than restating figures that can change. Where a figure is unverified, such as IB session dates, we say so instead of publishing it.

Scheduling built for a UAE school week

Slots run on Gulf Standard Time, around a Monday-to-Friday school week, and shift for Ramadan and examination periods. A tutor on a mismatched timezone turns a 5pm lesson into a 9pm one by February.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jebel Ali: your questions answered

Can I actually get a home tutor who comes to our villa in Jebel Ali?+

Local agencies do send tutors to Jebel Ali addresses, and market rates for that service run roughly AED 180-500 per hour depending on subject and level, with the tutor's travel included in the figure. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For Jebel Ali families we teach live one-to-one over video on Gulf Standard Time. The trade is straightforward: you give up a person in the room and you gain the whole pool of subject specialists rather than the subset willing to drive out to Jebel Ali at 5pm.

Which Diploma subjects do Jebel Ali families ask for most often?+

Mathematics is first by a wide margin, split between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, and the single most common request is HL Analysis and Approaches in the second Diploma year. Chemistry and Physics follow, usually at Higher Level and usually tied to a scientific investigation deadline. English A Language and Literature arrives when Paper 1 marks stay flat despite strong classwork. Economics and Business Management come up around the Internal Assessment rather than the papers. Arabic B appears steadily because Arabic is required in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum.

How do I tell whether my child's problem is content or examination technique?+

Look at a marked script rather than a report card. If marks are lost on questions the student could explain to you verbally, the problem is technique: unwritten method lines, command terms answered at the wrong depth, or structure the mark scheme cannot reward. If marks are lost on questions they cannot explain at all, it is content. The two need different work, and the common mistake is to buy content teaching for a technique problem, which is why some students do many past papers and never move. A diagnostic session with the script answers it in under an hour.

What does an Internal Assessment tutor do that my child's teacher does not?+

Nothing the teacher could not do with unlimited time, which they do not have. A tutor reads one student's draft against the lettered criteria for that subject and names, criterion by criterion, what the draft does not yet address. That is slow work and it is specific to the document in front of them. The tutor does not write, rewrite or complete any part of it; every sentence submitted must be the student's own. Anything beyond explanation, teaching and marking against descriptors is an academic-honesty matter that can cost the student the Diploma.

Are the AED rates on this page what IB Gram charges?+

No. They are market rates read from published competitor pages and Dubai rate guides in October 2026, quoted so you can judge any price you are offered against something. Budget online tuition is advertised from around AED 33-65 per hour, qualified online subject tutors from AED 150-200, in-home visits at AED 180-500 including travel, specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and one premium provider at AED 650. IB Gram's own fee depends on subject and level and is quoted after the free trial lesson, so you see the tutor before you see the number.

Does a tutor need a licence to teach my child privately in Dubai?+

Yes. The UAE requires a private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through MoHRE. The UAE government states the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule has been published. Ask any independent tutor whether they hold it before the first lesson.

My child is in the second Diploma year. Is it too late for tutoring to matter?+

It is late for content building and not late for mark recovery. In the final two terms the gains come from examination technique and from the Internal Assessment, because both are still movable and both carry fixed weight. A timed-paper cycle with real marking against the official scheme typically exposes two or three repeated habits, and habits can change in weeks. What will not happen in that window is covering a year of missed HL content. An honest tutor will tell you which of the two you are dealing with after reading one marked paper.

How does an online lesson handle a Physics or Chemistry practical?+

It handles the assessed part, which is the thinking rather than the glassware. The internally assessed scientific investigation is marked on research question, method design, data treatment, uncertainty handling and the quality of the analysis, and all of that is screen work. A tutor reads the student's data, checks the uncertainty propagation, looks at whether the graph supports the claim being made, and tests the conclusion against the evidence. The hands-on procedure happens in the school laboratory under the teacher's supervision, as the IB requires, and no tutor substitutes for that.

Which schools near Jebel Ali actually run the full IB Diploma?+

The catchment mixes curricula rather than concentrating on one. Greenfield International School in Dubai Investments Park runs an IB continuum, and Fairgreen International School in The Sustainable City is also an IB school, while Sunmarke School in Al Furjan offers the Diploma alongside a UK-curriculum route. The Winchester School Jebel Ali, Dove Green Private School and South View School are UK curriculum, Delhi Private School Dubai is Indian curriculum and The International School of Choueifat Dubai runs SABIS. Check each school's current authorisation on its own site, since programme offerings change year to year.

Should the same specialist take both Maths and Physics for a Jebel Ali student?+

Sometimes, and it is usually a worse idea than it looks. Maths and Physics overlap enough that one specialist can genuinely hold both, and Economics with Business Management is a reasonable pair. Chemistry and Biology are taught by different specialists in most schools for a reason, and the gap between HL Chemistry mechanism work and HL Biology command-term discipline is wide. Our default is one subject per tutor, because the point of the match is component-level knowledge of a specific mark scheme, and that narrows as the level rises.

Do you provide past papers and mark schemes for us to work from?+

We do not host, supply or distribute them. IB, Cambridge and Pearson papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are copyright material, and reproducing them is an infringement, while circulating unreleased material is a malpractice exposure for the student. What we do is reference the official sources, link them, and work from the copies your child's school is licensed to provide. Any service offering you a library of papers, or material that has not yet been released, is worth declining on those grounds alone.

How many sessions a week do most Jebel Ali Diploma students start with?+

One session a week in one subject is the normal starting point, and it is usually right. Two subjects at once doubles the homework load on a student who is already carrying six subjects plus the core, and the first month is diagnostic anyway. Families who start with three subjects most often reduce by half term. The exception is the final run into the examination session, where a short intensive block of two or three sessions a week in a single subject does real work because it is built entirely on timed papers and marking.

Will the lesson time still work during Ramadan and examination weeks?+

It has to move, and we plan for that rather than reacting to it. School hours shorten during Ramadan, families shift their evening around iftar, and a 5pm slot usually becomes either an early afternoon one or a post-iftar one. Examination weeks need the same flexibility in the other direction, with sessions clustered before papers and paused afterwards. Because tutors are not travelling to an address, moving a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation of someone's commute, which is one of the quieter advantages of the online format.

What qualifications do the tutors teaching Diploma subjects hold?+

A subject degree in what they teach and classroom or tutoring experience with that specific programme and level, which is the part that matters. Knowing Chemistry is not the same as knowing how the IB marks a Chemistry investigation, and the second is what we select for. We do not describe tutors as IB examiners or Cambridge examiners, because we cannot evidence current examiner status for individuals and examiner status is routinely used in this market to imply access to marking or boundaries that nobody has. Ask any agency to evidence the claim.

Do IB grades need Ministry of Education equivalency for a UAE university?+

School-leaving certificates generally need equivalency from the Ministry of Education before a UAE university application, and the requirements differ by curriculum. For the British track the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold is published in the source we read, so we do not state one. Verify the current IB requirement on moe.gov.ae before relying on any figure.

Start with the marked script, not the brochure

If you are searching for an IB home tutor in Jebel Ali, the fastest useful step is not a phone call about packages. Send the subject, the level, the school and a photograph of your child's most recent marked assessment. A specialist in that subject reads it, names where the marks actually went, and works through it with your child in a free one-to-one trial lesson online. You get a written diagnosis at the end of that hour whether or not you continue. From there, a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, the same tutor each week, and a short written note after every session so you can check progress against what the script said at the start.
