IB Home Tutors in the UAE

Parents searching for IB home tutors in the UAE are usually asking one question with a number in it: what does this cost, and what am I getting for it? This page answers both. It sets out the AED bands the UAE market actually charges, what pushes a quote up or down, and the arithmetic of travel time. IB Gram delivers the same one-to-one teaching as live online lessons on Gulf Standard Time, so the fee buys teaching rather than driving.

  • Market AED rates printed on the page, with the source and month named
  • One-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time
  • One free trial lesson per subject, arranged before any payment
  • Matched by syllabus and level, not by driving distance

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What a home tutor costs in the UAE, and what the fee is actually paying for

A UAE family that types IB home tutors into Google is usually three weeks past the point where they hoped the school would sort it out. A Diploma report has come home with a 4 in Chemistry HL, or a Mathematics exploration deadline has appeared with nothing written under it, and the obvious answer is to pay someone to sit beside the student. The market has an answer ready and a price attached: roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour for an in-home visit once the driving is absorbed into the fee. Almost nobody ranking for this search will print that number.

This page prints it, says where it came from, and takes it apart. The AED bands below were collected in October 2026 from UAE providers that publish their own rates and from the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. They are market figures, not ours. The IB Gram arrangement starts with one free trial lesson per subject, before any payment is taken, and the rate is agreed with you after that lesson rather than guessed from a web page. The reason to show you the market at all is so that whatever you are quoted, by us or by anybody else, can be checked against something real.

The second job of this page is to separate the fee from the teaching. An in-home hour is not an hour. A tutor who drives thirty minutes each way is committing two hours of their evening to deliver one hour of teaching, and that arithmetic is why the UAE in-home market sells two-hour minimum blocks, charges for late cancellations, and quietly narrows your choice of teacher down to whoever happens to live nearby. Live online lessons are not cheaper because they are a lesser product. They are cheaper because there is no car in them.

IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one tuition over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with written notes after each lesson that a parent can read. Nobody is sent to a UAE address: home visits are a service we run only in India, and saying that plainly matters more to us than winning a booking. What a UAE family gets instead is the thing a twenty-minute radius cannot supply, which is a Higher Level specialist who teaches the current subject guide and knows where Paper 2 eats marks, rather than the strongest graduate available within driving distance.

The rest of the page is arithmetic and calendars. What a month of lessons costs per teaching hour once you divide it out. What a quote has to contain before anyone can price it honestly. Which assessment components still have marks left in them in February and which have already closed. Who is legally permitted to give private lessons in the UAE, and what that permit costs, which is nothing at all. And the one boundary no fee moves: a tutor teaches, marks and gives feedback on work the student wrote, and never produces that work.

At a glance

  • In-home market rates run AED 180-500 an hour; qualified online subject rates run AED 150-300 (collected October 2026).
  • A published AED 799 monthly online package divides out near AED 100 per teaching hour; a AED 1,599-1,799 in-home package lands near AED 200-225.
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, so a licence fee inside a quote is a markup.
  • Two-hour minimums and late-cancellation charges exist to pay for driving, not for teaching.
  • Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram makes home visits only in India.
  • One free trial lesson per subject comes before any payment and before any rate is agreed.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB runs as four separate programmes, and the price of help differs across them because the assessment load does. A Primary Years parent is buying confidence and reading fluency. A Diploma parent in the second year is buying marks against a fixed deadline, which is the most expensive hour in the UAE market.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Six transdisciplinary themes, inquiry units and an exhibition at the end of Year 6. There are no external papers, so nothing a tutor does here can be measured against a grade boundary. Value at this stage is diagnostic: finding out whether a child who looks slow in a unit of inquiry is actually struggling with reading comprehension, number bonds or the language of the task. Short, frequent sessions beat long ones.

PYP rates sit at the bottom of the UAE band, roughly where the Bestimate budget tier lands, because the work does not need a subject specialist. The cost mistake families make here is the opposite of overspending: paying for two years of general homework help when eight focused sessions on place value would have closed the gap. Dubai alone has a large PYP cohort inside its 227 private schools, so supply is good and prices stay competitive.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, criterion-referenced marking from A to D in most subjects, and a Personal Project in the final year. Marks come from the school, not from an external board, which changes what tutoring is for: the student has to understand how their own teacher applies a criterion strand, because that is who awards the level. A tutor reads the task sheet and the rubric before touching the content.

This is where UAE families most often buy the wrong thing. MYP has no public mark scheme to practise against, so hours spent on generic past papers convert into nothing. The useful spend is small and targeted: one or two sessions per assessment cycle, aimed at the specific criterion the report flagged. Families moving from MYP into the Diploma also underestimate the mathematics step, which is the single most common reason a UAE DP1 student needs paid help by October.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The Diploma is marked out of 45, with up to three points coming from the TOK and Extended Essay combination, and 24 points is the floor for the award. Internal Assessment carries 20% of most subject grades, which means a fifth of the result is finished long before the papers are sat.

The Diploma is the expensive programme in every UAE price list, and the premium is real rather than invented: a Higher Level specialist is a scarcer person than a general maths teacher, and scarcity is what the extra AED 100 an hour buys. The IB accounts for roughly 7 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment, and three of the seven new schools opening in Dubai for 2026-27 are IB schools, so demand for DP specialists in the UAE is growing faster than the local supply of them.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more DP courses taken alongside a career-related study, a reflective project, a personal and professional skills course and a language development strand. The DP courses inside a CP are assessed exactly as they are in the full Diploma, so a CP student sitting Business Management SL needs the same paper technique as anyone else sitting it.

CP cohorts in the UAE are small, which has a direct price effect: a tutor near you who has taught the reflective project is unlikely to exist, and a search by distance will return someone who has never seen one. This is the clearest case on this page for a national online pool rather than a local one. For the DP components inside the CP, ordinary subject rates apply; for the reflective project, expect to pay for process coaching rather than content teaching.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Price follows scarcity, not difficulty. The subjects below are the ones UAE families pay for most often, with a note on where the marks are actually lost in each. Where a subject is hard to staff locally, the in-home market charges more for it and still offers you fewer people to choose from.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and the HL-only Paper 3, which is a 20% investigation-style paper most students meet for the first time in a mock. Marks leak out of method lines rather than answers: unjustified steps, a missing conclusion sentence, an unsupported sketch. HL AA is the most requested and most expensive single subject in the UAE market.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-heavy questions where the graphic display calculator is part of the method. Students lose marks by writing the answer the calculator gave without the command that produced it. AI SL is the quiet default at many UAE schools, and the exploration is where most of the recoverable marks sit.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Under the current guide, Paper 1 carries 36% and Paper 2 44%, with the scientific investigation taking the remaining 20%. Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms are where HL grades are made. Most lost marks are not chemistry errors: they are unstated assumptions, missing units and uncertainty treated as an afterthought.

Physics

HL and SL

The hardest subject to staff anywhere in the UAE at Higher Level. Fields, circuits and the HL extension topics reward students who can explain a mechanism in words before touching an equation. Examiners pay for reasoning, so a correct number with no stated principle behind it collects part marks at best.

Biology

HL and SL

A volume problem rather than a reasoning problem. Students who revise by rereading remember the content and still lose marks on command terms: outline, explain and evaluate each buy different things. Data-based questions on an unfamiliar experiment are the most trainable part of the paper and the part most students never practise.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides grades. Axes unlabelled, a shift drawn without a reason, no reference to the article in a commentary. HL adds the policy paper, which asks for calculation and evaluation in the same answer. The portfolio of commentaries is written across the course, so a family that asks for help in April has already lost most of it.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen Paper 1 analysis, the comparative Paper 2 and the individual oral, with an HL essay on top at Higher Level. Strong readers underperform here because they summarise instead of analysing. Tutoring value is highest on the oral, where a global issue chosen badly limits the grade before the student opens their mouth.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools, techniques and theories applied to a real organisation, with a case study released in advance for one paper. Most marks go missing in application: a correct definition of a concept followed by no link to the business in the question. The internal written work needs a researchable business problem, which is a decision best made early.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pseudocode, data structures and an internally assessed solution built for a real client. Paper questions on abstract data structures reward tracing by hand, which students resist. The solution is the component where UAE students most often need process help: scoping too large a product in October and running out of time in February.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio

Arabic runs on two tracks in UAE schools, and families regularly buy the wrong one. Arabic A is a literature course for first-language speakers; Arabic B is an acquisition course. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, so the stream a child sits in is a school decision, not a preference.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core components

Together these carry up to three points on the 45-point scale, and both are supervised inside the school. The TOK essay answers a prescribed title; the exhibition answers a prompt with three objects. Support here is process coaching and feedback on the student's own drafting, never writing, because authenticity is signed off by the supervisor.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four booking patterns cover almost every request a UAE family makes. They are described here by what they replace in the in-home market, because that is the comparison a parent is actually making when they get to this part of the page.

The weekly slot that replaces the house call

One 60-minute lesson a week with the same specialist, on a fixed day, over live video. This is the direct substitute for the weekly visit most UAE families start with, minus the drive and minus the two-hour minimum that the drive imposes. Sixty minutes is the right length for most Diploma work; attention, not budget, is the limiting factor.

  • Same tutor every week, same slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Written notes after each lesson, readable by a parent
  • No travel, so a 60-minute booking is actually possible
  • Reviewed every six to eight weeks against the school's reports

Shared-screen problem sets

The student works a past-paper question while the tutor watches the working appear, stopping at the line where the method goes wrong rather than after the answer. In a living room this needs two people leaning over one page; on a shared screen with an annotation layer it is cleaner, and the marked-up page is still there the next morning.

  • Method errors caught at the line, not at the answer
  • Marked pages saved and revisited before the next paper
  • Works for Maths, Physics and Chemistry calculation technique
  • Command-term drilling on real mark schemes the school supplies

Short-notice cover before a school deadline

A single session or a pair of them, booked inside a few days because an exploration draft, a commentary or an oral is due. The in-home market handles this badly: a visiting tutor has a fixed weekly route and cannot usually add a Tuesday. An online specialist in a different time zone frequently can.

  • Booked in days rather than weeks where a specialist is free
  • Priced as single sessions, with no package commitment
  • Aimed at one deliverable, with the rubric on screen
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never text supplied for them

Two children, one household, separate slots

Families with a Year 11 and a Diploma student usually try to buy one tutor for both to save money, which works only when the subject and level genuinely overlap. Splitting the week into two shorter one-to-one sessions costs the same as one long visit and gives each child a specialist rather than a compromise.

  • Separate specialists where the levels differ, at the same total cost
  • No sibling surcharge, because there is no second journey
  • Staggered slots so one screen and one quiet room are enough
  • One combined review so a parent reads one summary, not two

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in the UAE

The tutors below teach IB Diploma and Middle Years subjects to UAE students over live video. Each is matched to the subject, the level and the current subject guide rather than to a postcode, which is the whole reason a Fujairah family and a Dubai Hills family can book the same Chemistry HL specialist.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What families actually mean when they search for IB home tutors

An IB home tutor in the UAE is a private teacher paid by the hour to work with one student, usually in the family's own sitting room, at a market rate of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is absorbed into the fee. That is the market, and those figures come from UAE providers publishing their own rates in October 2026 together with the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. IB Gram works the same way with one change that we state before anything else: the teaching happens over live video on Gulf Standard Time rather than in the room, and home visits are a service we run only in India.

The phrase hides a very wide range of people. The UAE regulates private tuition through a MoHRE work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the categories eligible to hold it include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. A single search result page will mix a Diploma examiner with an undergraduate, and both of them may be calling themselves an IB home tutor at the same hourly rate.

So the question is never only what the hour costs. It is what fraction of the fee reaches the student as teaching. An in-home fee pays for teaching, driving, a cancellation buffer, an agency margin where one exists, and the risk that the match is wrong. Each of those is a real cost to somebody. Only the first one changes a grade.

The sections below take the fee apart line by line, then put it back together as a monthly figure per teaching hour, which is the only number that lets you compare an online package against a visiting tutor honestly. After that comes the part the price lists never mention: which hours are worth buying, and when in the UAE academic year they stop being worth anything.

02

The hourly rate is the smallest line in the bill

  • Ask for the quote split into teaching, travel and minimum-block terms before comparing providers.
  • A two-hour minimum doubles the bill whether or not the second hour teaches anything.
  • Cancellation windows are a price, not a policy, and they are shorter when nobody drives.
  • Package minimums lock the rate before you know whether the match is right.

Every in-home tutoring arrangement in the UAE carries five or six charges behind the headline rate, and none of them is hidden in a sinister sense. They exist because somebody has to be paid for time spent in a car, for an evening held open and then cancelled, and for the administrative cost of replacing a tutor who has moved emirate. The problem is that they are rarely itemised, so a family comparing AED 250 against AED 180 is comparing two numbers that mean different things.

Travel is the dominant one. A tutor absorbing a 30-minute drive each way has to recover that time somewhere, and the three available levers are a higher hourly rate, a longer minimum block, or fewer students, each of which lands on the family as cost or inconvenience. Two-hour minimums are not a teaching judgement. No Diploma student concentrates productively for 120 unbroken minutes after a school day; the block exists so the journey is worth making.

Cancellation terms are the second. In-home providers typically need 24 hours or more because the slot cannot be refilled at short notice from another emirate. Online, the same tutor can usually move a Wednesday to a Thursday, and the commercial pressure to charge for the gap largely disappears. That difference is worth real money across a school year with two exam blocks, a Ramadan period and a family trip in it.

The table below sets out the stack. Treat the AED effects as the direction and rough scale the market moves in, not as a quotation: they are drawn from published UAE rate tables and package prices collected in October 2026, and your own quote should be itemised against them.

03

A month of lessons, priced the way the UAE market publishes it

Monthly packages are how most UAE providers sell, and they are designed to be hard to compare. One sells eight sessions, another four visits of two hours, a third quotes a range with no session count at all. The fix is one division: take the monthly figure, divide it by the teaching hours inside it, and the headline stops mattering. Done that way, the cheapest-looking package on a UAE price list is sometimes the most expensive hour of teaching on it.

The numbers in the table are all published figures, collected in October 2026, with the source named in the final column. The two package rows come from UAE tutoring providers advertising monthly plans; the three tier rows come from the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions. None of them is an IB Gram price. We publish a rate after the free trial lesson, when the subject, the level and the actual starting point are known, because a figure quoted before any of that is a guess dressed as a quotation.

Two patterns show up as soon as the division is done. The first is that the in-home premium is roughly double, not marginal: around AED 200 to 225 per teaching hour against around AED 100 for the comparable online package. The second is that the specialist exam-year band is where families overspend without noticing, because the monthly figure climbs while the hours inside it often do not.

A third, quieter pattern matters more than either. Low monthly totals usually buy generalist hours. If the student needs a Higher Level physicist, four cheap hours of general science help is not a cheaper version of that; it is a different product that will not move the paper mark. Buy fewer hours of the right person rather than more hours of the wrong one.

Travel is a line item even when nobody charges for it

The clearest way to see what an in-home arrangement costs is to count minutes rather than dirhams. A lesson is a block of a tutor's evening, and the family is buying the whole block whether or not the whole block is teaching. The rows below are arithmetic, not survey data: take a stated journey, add it twice, add a few minutes for a lift and a greeting, and read off what proportion of the block was teaching.

The result explains most of the commercial behaviour in this market. At half the block spent driving, a tutor can make one visit an evening instead of two, so the rate per hour has to carry an evening's earnings. At two thirds, the only viable product is a long block or a group, which is why cross-emirate quotes arrive with two-hour minimums attached and why some providers push small groups instead. None of that is sharp practice. It is the arithmetic.

It also explains the quieter cost, which is scheduling. School runs across Dubai and Abu Dhabi push realistic start times past 17:00, and a tutor with a 30-minute drive between two families cannot offer 17:00 and 18:30 on the same evening. Families end up with the slot the route allows rather than the slot the child works best in, and a tired 19:30 Chemistry session is a poor use of AED 250.

Live online lessons remove the journey from both sides. The practical consequence is not only a lower rate; it is that two 45-minute sessions a week become affordable and schedulable, which for most Diploma subjects teaches considerably more than one two-hour block on a Thursday night.

The twenty-minute radius problem

Searching for a tutor by distance quietly changes the question from who can teach this to who lives nearby. For Year 4 numeracy those are close to the same question. For Physics HL under the current guide they are not, and the gap between them is where most of the disappointment in this market comes from.

The supply numbers make it concrete. Dubai has 227 private schools teaching 17 curricula, and the IB covers roughly 7 per cent of enrolment. A Higher Level Physics class in a UAE school is often a single group of a dozen or so students, taught by one or two teachers in the building. Draw a 20-minute radius around a villa in Dubai Hills and you have captured a handful of such teachers, most of whom are barred from tutoring their own students, and in Abu Dhabi explicitly so under ADEK professional-ethics rules.

What families settle for in that situation is predictable: a strong general scientist for a Higher Level paper, a mathematics graduate for an exploration that needs a teacher who has marked one, or an undergraduate who sat the Diploma recently and is cheaper than both. Those arrangements can work. They fail in a specific way, which is that the student gets the content right and the assessment wrong, because nobody in the room has read the current subject guide or a real mark scheme.

A national online pool changes the selection rule rather than the price. The binding constraint becomes availability in your evening window instead of availability within a drive, and for scarce subjects that is the difference between a specialist and a substitute. Where no specialist is free we say so rather than sending whoever is.

Which hours are worth buying, and when they stop being worth anything

Not every hour of tutoring has the same number of marks exposed to it. Each Diploma component has a window during which work on it can still change the outcome, and once that window closes the hour is worth very little regardless of what you pay for it. Families who get good value from tutoring are usually the ones who bought the right component at the right time, not the ones who bought the most hours.

Internal Assessment is the clearest case. In most Diploma subjects it carries 20% of the final grade, and it is written across a year under the school's own deadlines. An hour spent on an exploration in October, while the research question is still movable, can affect several marks. The same hour in late February, on a draft already submitted for authenticity sign-off, can affect almost nothing, because the student may no longer change it. That is the single most expensive timing error UAE families make.

Papers work the other way round. The marks stay available until the exam itself, so paper technique is the one thing worth buying late, and a six-week run of focused sessions before the May session is a reasonable purchase even if nothing came before it. The planning horizon column below is the practical part: it tells you how far ahead each component has to be bought to be worth buying.

Weightings move between subject guides, so confirm the split for your child's subjects with the school's IB coordinator against the current guide before planning around them. The figures shown are the common current pattern in the sciences and mathematics, where most UAE tutoring demand sits.

Who is permitted to give private lessons in the UAE, and what that should cost

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated, not informal. The route is a MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated completion time of two working days. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Anyone providing private tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you by anybody.

The cost consequence is simple and useful. Because the permit costs nothing, any line in a quote that reads as a licensing, registration or compliance fee is a margin, not a disbursement. Ask what it covers. The same applies to administrative charges attached to replacing a tutor: that is a provider cost, and whether you pay it is a commercial question rather than a regulatory one.

Eligibility is wider than most parents expect, which is why the same hourly rate can buy very different people. Registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18 can all hold the permit. A permit confirms that someone is allowed to tutor. It says nothing about whether they have taught a Diploma subject or seen a mark scheme.

Two boundaries are worth knowing before you book. Teachers are barred from paid tutoring of students enrolled at their own school under ADEK professional-ethics rules in Abu Dhabi, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction; this is press-reported, so check the current policy if it matters to your arrangement. And an operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: a centre in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no regulator permit of that kind, has no UAE premises, and does not present itself as endorsed by any authority named here.

The UAE academic year decides what you can buy, and when

Tutoring supply in the UAE is seasonal, and the seasons are not the ones a family expects. Demand spikes twice: once in late September when the first DP1 assessments land, and once between January and March when coursework deadlines and the March Cambridge series collide. Specialists in scarce subjects are committed for the year by about mid-October, which is why a February request for a Physics HL teacher so often returns a generalist.

The dated anchors below are board dates rather than IB dates, and that distinction is deliberate. Cambridge International runs June and November series with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. Its March 2027 series runs from 3 February to 4 March 2027, with final entries due 27 November 2026, forecast grades due 27 February 2027 and results on Direct on 13 May. Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs run in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026.

IB session dates are not published on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, and the UAE schools we work with sit the May session, so we describe it as the May session and nothing more precise. Confirm every IB date with your child's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before you plan around it, and treat any page that prints a confident IB results date without a source with suspicion.

Ramadan is the scheduling variable the price lists ignore entirely. Sessions move to post-Iftar timing, school days shorten, and an in-home arrangement that depends on a tutor crossing the city at 18:00 becomes hard to hold together. Online slots move by agreement, which in practice means a UAE family keeps its revision rhythm through the month instead of pausing it.

Paying more does not buy coursework, at any rate

  • Permitted: teaching the skill, explaining a criterion, marking practice work, feedback on the student's own draft.
  • Not permitted: supplying text, rewriting to completion, providing data the student did not collect.
  • Ask any provider to state its coursework boundary in writing before the first payment.
  • Authenticity is signed off inside the school, so a bought document is discoverable later, not just now.

There is one thing in this market that no fee should be able to buy, and it is the part some providers sell hardest. Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay, the TOK essay, the Personal Project and the reflective project must be the student's own work. A supervisor signs off authenticity, schools run similarity checks, and the IB treats produced-for-you work as malpractice, which puts the whole Diploma at risk rather than one subject grade. A family paying for that is buying their child's exposure, not their marks.

The boundary is easier to hold than it sounds, because the useful work sits entirely on the legitimate side of it. A tutor can teach the skill the component tests, explain what a criterion strand is asking for, mark a practice question against a real mark scheme, ask hard questions about a research question the student chose, and read a draft the student wrote and say where the reasoning stops. All of that moves marks and all of it is permitted.

What a tutor must refuse is specific. No text supplied for insertion. No rewriting that leaves the student's voice behind. No dataset the student did not generate. No sourcing of secondary material the student then presents as their own reading. If a provider's offer sounds like a delivery date and a word count, that is a writing service, and the thing being sold is risk.

This is also where the money question and the honesty question meet. Sessions that teach technique compound: the student who learns how uncertainty is marked in one investigation carries it into every paper question that touches it. A document bought once teaches nothing and leaves a permanent record on an academic-honesty file. The cheaper option, measured across two years, is the legitimate one.

What to send when you ask three providers for a quote

Most UAE parents contact three or four providers and get three or four unusable answers, because the enquiry did not contain enough for anyone to price. A message that says my son needs help with IB maths can only be answered with a range, and a range is what comes back. Five specifics turn the same enquiry into a real quotation and, more usefully, let you compare the replies against each other.

The single most valuable item is a piece of the student's actual work: a marked paper, a returned exploration draft with the teacher's comments, a report with subject grades on it. A provider who reads it will tell you something specific in the first reply, and one who does not read it will send a brochure. That is the cheapest filter available to a parent in this market, and it costs one attachment.

The second most valuable is the slot you genuinely have. Tutoring plans fail on scheduling far more often than on teaching quality, and a tutor who is honest about 17:30 on Gulf Standard Time being impossible has just saved you a month. Say which evenings exist, in your actual time zone, including what Ramadan will do to them.

Send the same five items to everyone. Then compare the replies on how specific they are rather than on price alone, because the provider who identifies the right problem at AED 250 is better value than the one who identifies nothing at AED 180.

THE FIVE-LINE ENQUIRY THAT GETS A REAL QUOTE
What to sendWhy it changes the quoteWhat happens when you leave it out

The bills that arrive after the Diploma: equivalency and entry

Two costs land after the teaching is finished, and UAE families routinely meet them later than they should. The first is Ministry of Education equivalency, which is how an international school certificate becomes a UAE-recognised one for university admission and employment. The second is exam entry itself, where a student sitting as a private candidate rather than through a school pays a centre directly.

For the British track the requirements are published and specific: proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, plus five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which is worth knowing because at least one ranking UAE tutoring page states a six-subject requirement. For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB there is no figure on this page, deliberately. We have not read an IB points threshold for equivalency on a Ministry of Education source, so we do not publish one. Check it on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate, and be sceptical of any tutoring page that quotes a number without saying where it came from. Equivalency is also a process a family completes with the authority, not something a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or speeds up.

The planning point is cheaper than the paperwork. Subject choices made in Year 11 decide whether the equivalency file assembles easily two years later, and a student who drops a subject for workload reasons can find the count short at the end. That is a thirty-minute conversation with the school in DP1, not a bill. Nothing here means tutoring is required for equivalency or admission; it is required for neither.

Where we tutor

Where the UAE in-home market concentrates, and what that means for you

In-home tutoring in the UAE clusters in a handful of communities, and the clustering is about drive time rather than wealth. The notes below describe what the local market looks like in each and what the evening logistics do to a booking. Lessons from IB Gram reach every one of them the same way, over live video.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Apartment living, the densest supply of freelance tutors in the country, and the worst parking position of any Dubai community. Tutors price the building, not the lesson: visitor parking and lift waits are why Marina quotes often carry a two-hour minimum.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Villa communities feeding several long-established IB and British schools. Supply here is good at primary level and thin at Higher Level sciences. School-run traffic on Al Wasl and Jumeirah Beach Road pushes realistic session starts past 17:00 on weekdays.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

The classic two-hour-block market. A tutor driving in from Deira or Sharjah will not take a single 60-minute booking, so families end up buying longer sessions than the child can concentrate through. Two shorter online sessions a week usually teach more for less.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Dubai Sports City

Fast-growing, heavily rented, and poorly served by the local in-home market relative to its size. Searches by distance return general tutors rather than Diploma specialists. This is one of the communities where an online pool changes the answer rather than just the price.

Khalifa City and Al Raha, Abu Dhabi

Spread-out villa compounds where the distance between two bookings is itself a cost. Abu Dhabi school staff are barred by ADEK professional-ethics rules from paid tutoring of students at their own school, so the familiar teacher is not an option here.

Saadiyat Island and Al Reem Island

A small, high-demand pocket with a handful of schools and very few resident specialists in subjects like Physics HL or Computer Science. Rates quoted into these communities sit at the top of the national band, and availability rather than price is usually the binding constraint.

Al Nahda and Muwailih, Sharjah

Dense, affordable, and regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority rather than KHDA. Many families here commute into Dubai for work, which compresses the usable tutoring window into a narrow slot between 18:00 and 20:30 on Gulf Standard Time.

Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah

The parts of the country the UAE tutoring market barely writes about. Local in-home supply for IB Diploma subjects is close to absent, and visiting tutors price the drive accordingly. Online delivery removes the distance premium entirely for these families.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai

Dubai had 227 private schools and 387,441 pupils in 2024-25 across 17 curricula, and the IB sits at roughly 7 per cent of that enrolment. Three of the seven new schools opening for 2026-27 are IB schools. Students we support attend schools across this cluster; the point of naming them is that boards and subject guides differ between them.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Uptown International School
  • Universal American School
  • Deira International School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Inspected by ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. The practical difference for a family is staffing: ADEK professional-ethics rules prevent school staff from tutoring their own enrolled students for a fee, so paid help has to come from outside the school entirely.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Sharjah is regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah by its Department of Knowledge; both approve fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods, not just inspections. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah sit with the federal Ministry of Education. IB provision thins out quickly north of Sharjah.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Australian International School Sharjah
  • Delhi Private School Sharjah
  • Sharjah American International School
  • RAK Academy

Schools are named as context for the curricula and boards taught in each area. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school, group or authority named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the five lines

Subject, level and programme; the school and the guide or board in use; the deadline that prompted the enquiry; one real piece of the student's work; and the evening slots that genuinely exist in your time zone, Ramadan included. That is enough for a specialist to say something useful in the first reply.

  2. 02

We say what we have, and what we do not

If a Higher Level specialist in that subject is free in your window, we name the match and the rate band. If nobody suitable is free, we say so rather than offering the nearest available alternative. Scarce subjects such as Physics HL and Computer Science are the ones where this happens most often.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One trial lesson per subject, arranged before any payment is taken and before any rate is agreed. Judge it on the diagnosis rather than on rapport: a specialist should finish the hour able to name which components are losing marks and which are still open to being changed.

  4. 04

Agree the rate and the pattern

The rate is set after the trial, when the subject, the level and the real starting point are known. The pattern follows what the student needs: one weekly slot, two shorter sessions, a short-notice block before a deadline, or separate slots for two children in the same household.

  5. 05

Fix the slot on Gulf Standard Time

Lessons run over live video at an agreed weekly time, with written notes afterwards that a parent can read without having sat in. Rescheduling inside the same week is normally possible, because there is no journey to re-plan around and no held-open evening to pay for.

  6. 06

Review against the school's own reports

Every six to eight weeks, read the plan against what the school is reporting rather than against how the lessons feel. If a component has closed, stop paying for work on it. If a new one has opened, move the hours there. This is the whole of value for money in tutoring.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The AED numbers are on the page

Market bands, monthly packages divided out per teaching hour, and the source and month for each. Three of the six UAE pages that rank for this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote a currency UAE families do not transact in.

No car in the fee

Teaching is delivered over live video, so you are not paying for driving, a two-hour minimum that exists to justify a journey, or a held-open evening. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India, and we would rather state that here than at the end of a sales call.

Matched by syllabus, not by distance

The selection rule is who has taught this subject at this level against the current guide, and who is free in your evening window. A twenty-minute radius around a UAE villa is a poor filter for Physics HL, and pretending otherwise is how families end up with a generalist.

A stated line on assessed work

Tutors teach the skill, explain criteria, mark practice work and give feedback on drafts the student wrote. Nobody supplies text, rewrites to completion or provides data the student did not collect. That line is published before you pay, not discovered afterwards.

Independent of every school and authority named here

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, has no UAE premises, and names schools only as context for the curricula taught in each area.

Honest about timing and availability

Specialists in scarce subjects commit for the year by about mid-October, and February requests are hard to fill at any rate. We say which window you are in, what is still buyable in it, and when the answer is that nobody suitable is free.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

What do home tutors charge per hour in the UAE, and what does online cost instead?+

Published UAE market rates in October 2026 put an in-home one-to-one visit at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is absorbed, and a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300. IB and IGCSE specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with premium named tutors quoted higher. Those are other providers' figures, drawn from their own pages and from the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, not ours. IB Gram agrees a rate after the free trial lesson, when the subject, level and starting point are known rather than guessed.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our home in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?+

No. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India, and we state that before a booking rather than after one. The practical effect for a UAE family is a wider choice of teacher and a lower rate: the fee covers teaching rather than driving, single 60-minute lessons are possible instead of two-hour minimum blocks, and a Higher Level specialist is selected on what they have taught rather than on how far they live from your community.

Why do visiting tutors in the UAE quote a two-hour minimum?+

Because of travel arithmetic rather than teaching judgement. A tutor driving 30 minutes each way commits about 125 minutes of an evening to deliver 60 minutes of teaching, so roughly half the block is unpaid journey. At that ratio only one visit an evening is realistic, and the rate for that visit has to carry the whole evening. A two-hour block changes the ratio to under a third. No Diploma student concentrates well for 120 unbroken minutes after school, so the minimum serves the journey, not the learning.

Is a monthly package better value than paying session by session?+

Divide it out before deciding. A UAE online plan published at AED 799 a month for eight sessions works out near AED 100 per teaching hour. An in-home plan at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits lands near AED 200 to 225. Bestimate's 2026 estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Packages are good value when the hours inside them are the right person's hours, and poor value when they lock a rate before the match is proven.

Can two children in the same household share one tutoring slot?+

Only when the subject and the level genuinely overlap, which is rarer than families hope. A Year 11 IGCSE student and a Diploma Higher Level student are sitting different papers against different mark schemes, and an hour split between them usually teaches neither properly. Online, the alternative costs the same: two shorter one-to-one slots on different evenings, each with a specialist for that level, with no second journey to pay for and no sibling surcharge. One combined review note afterwards means a parent still reads a single summary rather than two.

Should travel appear as a separate charge on an in-home quote?+

It rarely does, and that is the problem. Driving time is usually recovered invisibly through a higher hourly rate, a longer minimum block or a tight cancellation window, which is why two quotes of AED 250 and AED 180 can describe completely different arrangements. Ask for any quote split into the teaching fee, the travel position, the minimum block and the cancellation terms. If a quote also carries a licensing, registration or compliance fee, ask what it covers: the MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge, so there is nothing to pass on.

How many hours a week does an IB Diploma student actually need?+

For one struggling subject, one 60-minute session a week sustains progress, and two shorter sessions usually teach more than a single long block because attention rather than budget is the limit. For a subject in difficulty with a deadline inside six weeks, two sessions a week is reasonable for that stretch and then should drop back. Buying four or five hours a week across several subjects at once rarely works: the student loses homework time and the gains are not attributable to anything. Review the pattern every six to eight weeks against the school's reports.

Our child takes Physics HL and nobody nearby teaches it. What are the options?+

Higher Level Physics is the hardest subject to staff locally anywhere in the UAE. A school typically has one or two teachers for a small cohort, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK professional-ethics rules prevent them from tutoring their own students for a fee. A search by distance will return general science teachers and engineering graduates, who can cover content but not paper technique against the current guide. Online removes the distance filter, so selection depends on who has taught the subject and who is free in your evening window. Where nobody suitable is free, we say so.

May I ask to see a tutor's private tuition work permit before the first lesson?+

Yes, and it is a fair question. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a MoHRE work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years and applied for through MoHRE's own channels in about two working days. Working without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount with caution. Remember what the permit does and does not tell you: it confirms somebody may tutor, not that they have ever taught a Diploma subject or read a mark scheme.

Can my child's own class teacher tutor them privately for a fee?+

In Abu Dhabi, no. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so verify the current wording with the school if it matters to your plan. The practical consequence is the same across the country: paid help has to come from outside the building, which is exactly why a wider pool of teachers matters more than a short drive.

What happens in the free trial lesson, and what are its conditions?+

One trial lesson per subject, arranged before any payment is taken and before a rate is agreed. The specialist works through a real piece of the student's own work rather than running an introduction, and should finish able to say which components are losing marks and which are still open to change. Judge the lesson on that diagnosis. There is no obligation afterwards, and the rate band is quoted once the subject, level and starting point are known. If the trial shows we are not the right fit for that subject, we will say so.

Can lessons continue through Ramadan and the summer holidays?+

Yes, with the timing agreed week by week. During Ramadan sessions commonly move to post-Iftar timing and school days shorten, which is the point at which an arrangement depending on a tutor crossing the city at 18:00 tends to break down. Online slots move by agreement, so the revision rhythm survives the month. Summer is the cheapest and most available window in the UAE tutoring year, and the most useful thing to buy in it is transition work: MYP into the Diploma, IGCSE into DP1, or the groundwork for an exploration due in the autumn.

Will a tutor write or finish my child's Extended Essay if we pay more?+

No, at any price. The Extended Essay, the Internal Assessments, the TOK essay and the Personal Project must be the student's own work, authenticity is signed off by a supervisor inside the school, and the IB treats produced-for-you work as malpractice that puts the whole Diploma at risk. What a tutor does instead is narrow the research question, plan the reading, explain what each criterion is asking for, and give feedback on drafting the student did. If a provider's offer sounds like a word count and a delivery date, what is being sold is risk.

What should I put in a message when I ask three providers for a quote?+

Five things: the subject, level and programme; the school and which board or guide it uses; the deadline that prompted the enquiry; one real piece of the student's work, such as a marked paper or a returned draft; and the evening slots you genuinely have in your own time zone, Ramadan included. Send the same five to everybody. Then compare the replies on specificity rather than on price, because a provider who names the actual problem at AED 250 an hour is better value than one who names nothing at AED 180.

Is a quoted rate inclusive of VAT, and should a tutor show a TRN?+

Ask both questions directly and get the answer in writing. We do not publish a tax position for UAE tuition on this page, because stating one would need a Federal Tax Authority source we are not citing here. What a parent can reasonably do is ask whether a quoted AED figure is inclusive or exclusive, and whether the provider holds a tax registration number. A quote that cannot answer either question clearly is a quote you cannot compare with another one, which is reason enough to ask before the first payment rather than after it.

Which exam session is my child sitting, and when do entries close?+

Ask the school, because entry deadlines sit months before the papers. Cambridge International runs June and November series with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, warning it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. Its March 2027 series runs 3 February to 4 March 2027 with final entries due 27 November 2026. Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs run in May/June and November. UAE IB students sit the May session; confirm those dates with the IB coordinator, because we do not publish them.

We have about AED 2,000 a month to spend. Where should it go?+

At published market rates that is roughly eight to ten hours at the budget end, or four to six hours of an IB specialist. Spend it on one subject, not three. For content gaps and confidence, a recent high-scoring graduate near the AED 45 to 150 band is reasonable value. For a Higher Level paper losing marks to command terms, method lines and criterion wording, you need somebody who has marked work against the current guide, which is the AED 200 to 450 band. Four cheap hours of general science is not a discounted specialist.

How do you know the hours we are paying for are working?+

By reading the plan against the school's own reporting every six to eight weeks, not against how the lessons feel. Three things are checkable: whether the component the hours were aimed at has moved, whether the written notes after each lesson describe specific errors rather than topics covered, and whether the student can now do the thing unprompted. If a component has closed, stop paying for work on it. If a new one has opened, move the hours. Grades are the slowest signal available and the last one to look at.

Every page below covers a different question the UAE families ask about IB and IGCSE support, with its own syllabus detail, costs and tutor availability.

Flag of the UAE

An in-home tutor in the UAE costs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour at published market rates, and a meaningful share of that fee pays for a car rather than for teaching. The same one-to-one teaching delivered over live video on Gulf Standard Time removes the journey, the two-hour minimum and the twenty-minute radius that decides which teacher you are allowed to choose. Send the five lines, take the free trial lesson in the subject that matters most, and judge the diagnosis before any rate is agreed. If no specialist is free in your window, we will tell you that instead of sending whoever is.
