IB Tutors in the UAE

Parents searching for IB tutors in the UAE are usually solving two problems at once: a subject grade that has slipped, and a school system governed by four different authorities. Dubai answers to KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to ADEK, Sharjah to SPEA, and the northern emirates to the federal Ministry of Education, which also decides whether your child's Diploma becomes a UAE-recognised certificate. IB Gram matches your child to a subject specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial lesson first.

  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • Tutors matched to your child's syllabus guide and first-exams year
  • Coursework support stays inside IB honesty rules: feedback, never ghostwriting
  • Free trial lesson before any payment, and no joining fee

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What a UAE parent is actually buying when they hire an IB tutor

The IB Diploma is the same programme in Dubai that it is in Geneva. The system around it is not. A family in the UAE is working inside three emirate-level regulators and one federal ministry, a school fee framework tied to inspection ratings, a set of Ministry of Education subjects that run alongside the Diploma, and an equivalency process that decides whether a 38-point Diploma is accepted by a UAE institution at all. None of that changes what Paper 2 asks a candidate to do. All of it changes what a parent has to plan around, and almost none of it appears on the pages currently selling tuition.

That is why this page is organised around the system rather than the subject. Most pages advertising IB tutors in the UAE describe the Diploma, list some subjects and stop. A parent who already knows the Diploma needs something else: which authority inspects their child's school, what the rating on the front of the report does and does not measure, which subjects the Ministry of Education requires beyond the six IB courses, what the MoE equivalency certificate asks for, who is legally permitted to tutor here, and where the line sits between a tutor helping with an Internal Assessment and a tutor committing malpractice on a student's behalf.

On delivery, IB Gram is plain about the format. Teaching for UAE families happens one-to-one over live video on a shared screen, timed to Gulf Standard Time around school pick-up, sport and prayer times. Home visits are part of what we offer in India, and not part of what we offer here. The reason is not cost. A Diploma cohort in Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain is small, and a Chemistry HL specialist who knows the 2023 science guide is not necessarily living within a thirty-minute drive of the family who needs one. Working over video takes the drive out of the matching problem entirely.

Prices on this page are market figures, attributed to whoever published them. The UAE tutoring market publishes very little in dirhams: of the competitor pages reviewed for this page in October 2026, three carried no price at all and two quoted US dollars, a currency UAE families do not transact in. The AED bands further down come from published competitor rate cards and from Bestimate's Dubai tutoring cost table. They describe what the market charges. They are not an IB Gram price list, because a sensible quote depends on the subject, the level, and how many weeks are left before the session.

What follows is the regulatory map first, then the school and marking system, then the honesty rules, then cost, then the comparison between a tutor in the room and a tutor on the screen. Read the sections that apply to your emirate and skip the rest. If your child is in Year 12 at a KHDA-inspected school in Dubai and the problem is Maths AA HL, the sections on inspection ratings, on who marks what, and on academic honesty are the three that will change what you do this term.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB runs four programmes and UAE schools offer them in different combinations, often alongside a British or American stream in the same building. The Ministry of Education requirements sit on top of all four, which is why the notes below deal with the regulatory side as well as the academic one.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

A transdisciplinary framework rather than a syllabus: six units of inquiry a year, conceptual understanding assessed through the learner profile, and no external examination at any point. Reporting is against learning outcomes a parent has often never seen before, which is the single most common source of confusion for families arriving from a CBSE or British primary. Tutoring at this stage is usually about English fluency, number sense and written expression, not about the programme itself.

Inspectors treat the PYP exit point as a predictor, so a KHDA or ADEK report will comment on primary attainment in English, mathematics and science against curriculum standards rather than against the PYP's own language. Arabic begins in the primary years in UAE private schools, and for many non-Arab families the first real academic difficulty of their UAE posting is Arabic as an additional language rather than anything in the inquiry cycle.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups marked against four criteria each, every criterion scored 1-8, then converted to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries. The Personal Project lands in the final year. Families often read a criterion score of 5 as a middling result and are surprised when it converts to a 6; the conversion table, not the raw criterion mark, is what matters. Schools that run MYP to Year 11 instead of IGCSE produce students with no external examination experience before Year 12.

This is where the UAE equivalency question starts to bite. A student who finishes MYP with the optional eAssessment holds a recognised certificate; a student who finishes with school-reported MYP grades alone holds a school report. Families planning to leave the UAE mid-programme, or to move between a KHDA school and an ADEK school, should ask the admissions office which of the two the school actually issues before the transfer paperwork begins.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject is graded 1-7, giving 42 points, with up to three further points from the TOK and EE matrix for a maximum of 45. The Diploma is awarded at 24 points subject to failing conditions, which include a grade E in TOK or the Extended Essay and a shortfall in Higher Level points.

The DP is the programme the MoE equivalency process is built around in the UAE, and the one where the Ministry subjects create a real timetable squeeze: six IB courses, three core components, Arabic and Islamic Studies where they apply, and Moral, Social and Cultural Studies. Students in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain also sit inside ADEK's reporting cycle, which runs to different term dates from Dubai in some years, so a revision plan copied from a Dubai friend can be two weeks out.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more DP courses plus a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills, service learning and a language portfolio. It is graded differently from the Diploma: the DP courses keep their 1-7 grades, the career-related study is certified by its own provider, and there is no 45-point total. Hospitality, business and engineering pathways are the common UAE pairings, usually with BTEC or an equivalent vocational award.

Only a handful of UAE schools run the CP, and recognition is the question to settle before the choice is made rather than after. A CP student does not hold an IB Diploma, so the equivalency file and the university application both work differently. Ask the MoE equivalency service and the target university's admissions office directly, in writing, and keep the reply. This is the one IB route where a parent should not rely on a tutoring site, including this one, for the recognition answer.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects UAE families ask for most often, with the assessment shape that actually decides the grade. Weightings differ between Higher and Standard Level in ways that change what revision should prioritise, and the science subjects changed shape for first examinations in 2025.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At HL, Paper 1 and Paper 2 carry 30% each, Paper 3 carries 20% and the exploration 20%. Paper 3 is two extended problem-solving questions, and it is where HL candidates who have only drilled past-paper topics come apart. The SL course drops Paper 3 and splits 40-40-20. Proof, complex numbers and calculus beyond the SL boundary are the usual pressure points.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Calculator-permitted throughout, with statistics, modelling and financial mathematics replacing much of the pure content in AA. The HL Paper 3 is a long modelling investigation. Students who choose AI to avoid difficulty are often surprised by the statistical interpretation demands, and by how many UAE engineering and computing programmes still prefer AA.

Physics

HL and SL

Under the 2023 guide, first examined in 2025, there are two papers and no Paper 3: Paper 1 combines multiple choice with data analysis, Paper 2 is structured and extended response, and the scientific investigation carries 20%. Marks go missing in uncertainty treatment and in questions that ask for a relationship rather than a number.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Reactivity and structure organise the current guide, with the HL extensions woven through rather than bolted on. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium calculations and the energetics questions that require two steps before any arithmetic are where HL grades settle. The investigation is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation at six marks each.

Biology

HL and SL

The 2023 guide reorganised the course around unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. Candidates lose marks on command terms more than on content: outline, explain and evaluate are three different tasks, and an answer written for the wrong one scores on none of its merits.

Economics

HL and SL

At HL, Paper 1 is 20%, Paper 2 is 30%, Paper 3 is 30% and the portfolio 20%; at SL the portfolio rises to 30%. The portfolio is three commentaries of 800 words each on recent news articles, marked out of 14 apiece. Diagram accuracy and the key-concept link are the two criteria students most often under-serve.

Business Management

HL and SL

HL adds a Paper 3 built on a social-enterprise prompt released in advance. The research project is where the grade is usually made or lost, because a weak choice of organisation caps the analysis before a word is written. Tool-based answers that name a framework without applying it to the stimulus earn very little.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is guided textual analysis of unseen non-literary texts, Paper 2 a comparative essay, and both levels include the Individual Oral. HL adds the 1,200-1,500 word HL essay. UAE cohorts are frequently strong on content and weak on the Paper 1 register, audience and purpose triad, which is most of the available credit.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio

Arabic runs as an IB language option and, separately, as a Ministry of Education requirement, and the two are not the same course. A student can be meeting the MoE Arabic obligation while studying Arabic B SL for the Diploma, or studying Arabic A for the Diploma and still needing the school's own Arabic provision. Clarify which one is being tutored before the first session.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Programming is assessed through written papers plus the solution development of the Internal Assessment, so a student who codes well but documents badly underperforms. The HL extension covers resource management and abstract data structures, and the case study carries its own paper. Pseudocode conventions alone account for a steady trickle of lost marks.

Psychology

HL and SL

The biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches at both levels, with HL extensions and a Paper 3 on research methodology. The Internal Assessment is a replication of a simple experiment with a written report. Critical thinking marks go to candidates who evaluate the study they cited rather than describing a second study.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all Diploma candidates

TOK is the 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title, marked externally out of 10, plus a 950-word exhibition marked by the school. The Extended Essay is 4,000 words, marked externally out of 34. Together they contribute up to three points. Both are deadline-driven projects rather than taught subjects, and both reward supervision more than tuition.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways UAE families use IB tuition, each shaped by the term dates and reporting cycle of their own emirate. All of them run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; none of them involve anyone travelling.

Weekly one-to-one by subject

One or two fixed sessions a week in a single subject, same tutor throughout, scheduled after school and before the evening collapses. The point of a fixed slot is the recurring homework cycle: a student brings the week's problem set, the tutor works through the thinking rather than the answers, and the next week's work is set from what the session exposed.

  • Same tutor each week, matched to the syllabus guide version in use
  • Session notes after each lesson, written so the school can read them
  • Timed around school pick-up, sport and prayer times on GST
  • Reschedule within the week rather than losing the session

Coursework supervision for the IA, EE and TOK

Structured feedback cycles against the published criteria, run inside the IB's academic honesty rules. The tutor reads a draft, marks it against the criterion letters the examiner will use, and returns written questions the student answers themselves. No part of the work is drafted, rewritten or supplied by the tutor, and every session is logged.

  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback against the actual mark allocations
  • Questions and annotations, never replacement text
  • A record of what was discussed, available to the school
  • Deadline mapping back from the school's internal submission dates

Ministry subject support: Arabic and MSC

Arabic, Islamic Studies and Moral, Social and Cultural Studies run alongside the Diploma in UAE private schools, and they are the subjects families most often neglect until a report lands. Support here is about meeting the school's and the Ministry's requirement with the least possible drag on the six IB courses, rather than about chasing a top grade.

  • Arabic as an additional language, for students who arrived mid-programme
  • Separating the MoE Arabic requirement from an IB Arabic B course
  • Short cycles rather than year-long commitments
  • Written progress notes for the school file

Pre-session intensives

Concentrated blocks in the weeks before the May or November papers, usually two or three sessions a week on one subject, worked entirely through past papers and markschemes. This mode suits a student who understands the content and loses marks in the room: timing, command terms, working shown, and the discipline of answering the question actually asked.

  • Past-paper work under exam timing, marked against the markscheme
  • Command-term drilling, because outline and explain score differently
  • Session timing adjusted during Ramadan, including post-Iftar slots
  • A hard stop date, so the block does not drift into the study leave

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What searching for IB tutors in the UAE actually turns up

A parent typing this search is looking for a subject specialist. What the results return is mostly agency landing pages: of the competitor pages reviewed in October 2026, the strongest was about 2,294 words with two tables, three published no price at all, and one sold completed Internal Assessments outright. The country-level facts a UAE family needs, which authority inspects the school, what the equivalency file requires, who may legally tutor, appear almost nowhere in the cluster.

That absence is not a small editorial gap. It is the difference between tuition that fixes a symptom and tuition that fits the system the student is inside. A Year 13 student in Abu Dhabi whose Diploma points are short has an ADEK-reported school record, an MoE equivalency file to assemble, a university deadline that may sit before the 6 July results date, and a Higher Level points condition that decides whether the Diploma is awarded at all. A tutor who knows only the subject can help with one of those four.

So this page starts from the regulatory map and works inwards. The sections below cover which authority governs your child's school and what its rating really measures, what the Ministry of Education equivalency process asks for, which Ministry subjects run alongside the six IB courses, who is permitted to tutor privately here, who marks each piece of assessed work and out of how many marks, where academic honesty draws the line, what the market charges in dirhams, and how teaching over live video compares with the home-visit model the local market sells.

Read it as a reference rather than a brochure. If one section answers your question and the rest do not apply, that is the page working as intended.

02

Which authority regulates your child's school, and why it matters

The UAE does not have one schools regulator. Dubai private schools are licensed and inspected by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, through the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall to ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge. Sharjah has its own body, the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah sit under the federal Ministry of Education. Above all of them, the Ministry of Education runs certificate equivalency and attestation for the whole country.

This matters to a tutoring decision in three concrete ways. Inspection reports are published by different bodies on different cycles, so comparing a Dubai school with an Abu Dhabi school means reading two frameworks rather than one scale. Term dates, assessment weeks and reporting windows are set within each emirate's rules, so a revision plan built around a friend's school calendar can be out by a fortnight. And the fee framework in Dubai links a school's permitted increase to its inspection rating and the Education Cost Index, which is why a rating is a commercial document as well as an educational one.

It also matters for what a parent can verify. An inspection report names the judgement on teaching, on students' attainment and progress by subject group, and on the school's own assessment practice. That is independent evidence about provision. A tutoring website's claims about a school are not evidence of anything. Where this page refers to inspection judgements, the instruction is the same every time: read the report for your child's school, and check its date.

The table below is the map. Find your emirate, then go and read the current report rather than a summary of it.

03

Reading an inspection rating before you book anything

KHDA publishes judgements on a six-band scale: Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak and Very Weak. ADEK has used the same six bands for its Abu Dhabi private school inspection reports. The bands describe the school as a provider. They do not describe your child, and parents routinely read them as though they do.

The practical use of a rating is diagnostic. If a school is judged Good or better and a Higher Level subject is still going badly for one student, the provision is probably sound and the problem is specific: a missed foundation topic, a command-term habit, a coursework deadline handled badly. That is exactly what one-to-one teaching fixes quickly. If the report itself flags weak teaching or weak attainment in a subject group, a family is looking at something structural that tuition can carry a student through but cannot repair.

Two further cautions. First, a rating is an average across the whole school, and a school rated Very Good overall can have one subject department in difficulty, which the body of the report will usually say even when the headline does not. Second, a rating is a snapshot with a date on it. A report from three years ago describes a different staff body. Where a family is choosing between schools, the honest read is the most recent full report, not the band remembered from a conversation at a birthday party.

The table below sets out what each band supports as a next step.

SIX BANDS AND WHAT EACH MEANS FOR A DIPLOMA FAMILY
BandWhat it describesWhat it does not tell youA reasonable next step
OutstandingProvision judged to exceed expectations across most indicatorsHow your child performs inside a strong cohort, or how hard the internal grading isIf a grade is low here, the gap is individual; a single-subject tutor is the proportionate response
Very GoodStrong provision with identified areas still developingWhich department is the developing one, unless you read the body of the reportRead the subject-group judgements before assuming the problem is your child
GoodProvision that meets expectations overallVariation between subject groups, which can be wide at this bandAsk the school for the subject-level data behind the judgement, then target tuition
AcceptableProvision meeting the minimum expected standardWhether Higher Level teaching specifically is the weak partTreat Higher Level sciences and mathematics as the first places to seek outside support
WeakProvision judged below the expected standard on key indicatorsWhat the school's improvement plan has already changed since the visitPlan for sustained outside support in the examined subjects, not a few sessions
Very WeakProvision judged seriously below standard, with regulatory follow-upThe timeline on which any of it will improve for a current Year 13Consider whether a transfer is realistic; if not, build the revision plan independently of the school
04

MoE equivalency: turning an IB Diploma into a UAE-recognised certificate

A foreign school certificate does not become usable in the UAE system by itself. The Ministry of Education operates an equivalency service that assesses a certificate against UAE secondary requirements and issues an MoE equivalency certificate. UAE universities, federal employers and many licensing bodies work from that, not from the IB transcript alone. Not one competitor page reviewed for this page mentions the process at all, which is remarkable for a cluster selling to UAE parents.

For an IB student the usual shape of the requirement is the full Diploma rather than a Course Results certificate, awarded with the minimum points and without a failing condition, across six subjects at the required Higher and Standard Level split, with documents attested as the service specifies. For a British-curriculum student the shape is different: a set of IGCSE passes including English and mathematics plus the A-Level or AS requirement. The exact subject counts, grade floors and attestation steps are published by the Ministry, are revised from time to time, and should be read from the Ministry's own channel in the term the application is made.

The failure modes are predictable and nearly all administrative. Families discover in Year 13 that a dropped subject leaves the file short. They find that a certificate earned in another country needs attestation that takes weeks. They assume a Course Results certificate from a student who did not complete the Diploma is interchangeable with the Diploma, and it is not. They leave Arabic or Islamic Studies unaddressed for years and then need a record of study that does not exist.

None of this is a tutoring problem, and it is on this page because it determines what tutoring is for. If the equivalency file needs the Diploma awarded rather than individual good grades, then the Higher Level points condition and the TOK and EE grades matter more than one subject moving from a 5 to a 6.

Arabic, Islamic Studies and Moral, Social and Cultural Studies beside the IB

UAE private schools teach Ministry of Education subjects alongside whatever international curriculum they offer. In broad terms: Arabic is required for all students up to a specified grade, with Arab and non-Arab students following different programmes; Islamic Studies is required for Muslim students; and Moral, Social and Cultural Studies carries the moral education, UAE social studies and citizenship content. The precise year groups and hours come from the regulator's current circular, so the school's own curriculum policy is the document to read, not a tutoring site.

For an IB family the consequence is arithmetic. Six IB courses, three core components and the Ministry subjects compete for the same week. Something gives, and what usually gives is Arabic, because it does not appear in the points total. That holds until the report arrives, or until the equivalency file needs a record of study, at which point a family is trying to rebuild several years of language work in a term.

The second complication is that families mix up two different things called Arabic. A student can be meeting the Ministry's Arabic requirement through the school's own provision while separately studying Arabic B SL as an IB language. Those are different courses with different assessments, and a tutor engaged for one is not automatically useful for the other. The first question in any Arabic enquiry should be which of the two is in difficulty.

IB Gram treats these subjects as short, targeted cycles rather than open-ended commitments, with written notes the school can read.

Who is allowed to tutor privately in the UAE

  • The MoHRE private tutor permit carries no published fee
  • An employer's no-objection is part of the process for employed applicants
  • Validity and renewal terms come from the Ministry's own channels, not from blogs
  • Penalty amounts were not specified by the ministry, so treat quoted figures with caution
  • A permit is not evidence of IB subject experience; ask separately about that

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. A permit is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and on this point every regulatory source checked for this page agrees: the MoHRE private tutor permit is free of charge. If a tutor or an agency tells you a fee was paid for the permit itself, that is worth a question. Where an applicant is employed, the employer's no-objection is part of the process, and the Ministry publishes the current validity period and renewal rules on its own channels.

There is a second claim circulating that this page will not repeat. Figures for penalties on unlicensed tutoring appear on several blogs. Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify fine amounts or detail the penalties, and the widely quoted number could not be verified against any official source. A page that invents a fine to frighten a parent into compliance is not a page to take other facts from.

What the permit does and does not prove is the part parents most often get wrong. It establishes that an individual is permitted to tutor. It says nothing about whether that person has taught the Diploma, has examined for it, knows the 2023 science guide from the one before it, or can mark an Internal Assessment against the right criterion letters. Those are separate questions, and they are the ones that decide whether a session is worth the hour.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. Tutors teaching UAE families work over live video, which is the format every one of our country pages states, and we will say plainly which subject and which guide version a tutor has actually taught before you book.

07

Who marks your child's work, and out of how many marks

Diploma assessment is split between work marked inside the school and work marked outside it, and the split is poorly understood by parents. Internal Assessments are marked by the class teacher against published criteria, then a sample is sent to the IB for moderation, which can move the whole class's marks up or down. The Extended Essay and the TOK essay are marked by external examiners who have never met the student. Examination papers are marked externally against a markscheme.

This matters because it tells a family where influence lies. A disputed IA mark is a conversation with the school and then a moderation outcome nobody controls. A weak Extended Essay is a conversation with the supervisor while there is still time, because once it is submitted the only reader is an examiner with a criterion grid. Mark allocations also reveal where effort pays: the sciences investigation is marked out of 24 across four equally weighted criteria, so a brilliant conclusion cannot rescue a poor research design.

Criterion letters are the practical vocabulary here, and almost nobody writing about UAE tutoring uses them. A mathematics exploration is marked out of 20: presentation 4, mathematical communication 4, personal engagement 3, reflection 3, and use of mathematics 6. A student who writes beautifully and reflects thinly has capped themselves at 17 before the mathematics is read. Knowing the numbers changes how a draft is revised.

The table below gives the marking authority and the mark allocation for the components UAE families ask about most.

Academic honesty: the line a tutor must not cross

  • A tutor may mark a draft against the criteria and explain where marks were lost
  • A tutor may not write, rewrite or supply any part of a submitted piece
  • The research question and the data must come from the student
  • Authenticity declarations are signed by both the student and the school supervisor
  • Any service offering a finished IA, EE or TOK essay is offering a malpractice risk

The IB treats collusion and plagiarism as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, not on the tutor. A candidate found to have submitted work that is not their own can lose the grade for that subject and, in the worst case, the Diploma. That risk is the reason this section exists on a commercial page, and the reason one competitor found during research for this page, which advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, should be treated as a serious hazard rather than a cheaper option.

The working line is simple enough to apply. A tutor may teach the content, explain the criteria, ask questions about a draft, point at a weakness, mark a piece against the criterion letters an examiner will use, and set the student work that addresses the gap. A tutor may not draft the work, rewrite sentences into the submission, supply the research question, provide data, or produce a model answer that is then handed in. Every piece of assessed work carries an authenticity declaration from the student and the supervisor, and both signatures mean something.

There is also a quieter version of the same problem. A tutor who rewrites a paragraph verbally while the student types has drafted it. A tutor who supplies a research question has removed the personal engagement the criteria reward. These are the cases where good intentions do the damage, which is why IB Gram's coursework sessions return written questions and annotations rather than replacement text, and keep a record of what was discussed.

If you ever want to check, ask for the session notes. A tutor working honestly has nothing to hide in them.

What IB tuition costs in the UAE market

This is the question competitors avoid. Three of the six provider pages reviewed in October 2026 published no price, and the two that did quoted US dollars. One agency's own FAQ asks what tutoring costs and then declines to answer it. So the figures below are assembled from the providers that do publish, plus Bestimate's Dubai tutoring cost table, and they are presented as market bands rather than as our price list.

The spread is wide because the hour is not the same product at each tier. At the bottom, an online session with a university student can run from AED 33 to 65, which EdFlik and Tutopiya both advertise. A qualified subject tutor working online sits in the AED 150 to 300 range, where Unitors publishes AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB. A visit involving travel carries the travel: Bestimate puts that at AED 180 to 350 and home tutors generally at AED 200 to 500. A named IB specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and premium examiner-level provision reaching AED 650 at BartyED.

Monthly packages are common and worth reading carefully. Figures seen in the market include about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour home visits. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. What changes the number most is not the brand; it is the level, whether the tutor has taught the current guide, and how close the session is to the papers.

IB Gram quotes after a consultation, and the trial lesson is free, because a quote for Maths AA HL eight weeks out and a quote for MYP English in September are not the same conversation.

A tutor in the room versus one-to-one online, for a UAE family

Most UAE parents start by looking for someone to come over, which is why the phrase appears in so many searches. The honest answer is that the model has real strengths: a younger child concentrates better with an adult physically present, and a parent can hear what is going on from the next room. For a Diploma student the balance tips, and it tips for reasons that have nothing to do with sales copy.

The first is the tutor pool. A visiting tutor has to live within a workable drive, which for a family in Al Ain, Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain narrows the options to whoever is nearby, regardless of whether they have taught Chemistry HL under the 2023 guide. Working over video widens the pool to every specialist available at that hour. The second is cost structure, because the market rates above show the travel priced into the visit. The third is scheduling: a 6pm slot that depends on traffic across Dubai or Abu Dhabi is a slot that will be missed.

The fourth is the work itself. Diploma teaching is mostly done on a screen anyway: a past paper annotated live, a markscheme beside the answer, a graph plotted in Desmos, an IA draft with comments in the margin, a recording of the session the student can replay the night before the paper. A shared screen is a better surface for that than a kitchen table.

IB Gram's position is set out plainly. Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video; nobody is sent to a UAE address, and home visits are an India-only part of what we do. The comparison below is what that choice actually trades away and what it buys.

Where we tutor

The seven emirates, and who regulates schooling in each

Tutoring demand in the UAE is not spread evenly, and neither is IB provision. These notes are about the regulatory and practical position in each emirate rather than its scenery, because that is what decides how a family finds a specialist and when a session can realistically start.

Dubai

KHDA regulates private schools through the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau, publishes a report per school, and ties the permitted fee increase to the rating and the Education Cost Index. The largest concentration of IB World Schools in the country sits here, which means the deepest tutor pool and the most crowded 5pm session slot.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK regulates private schools in the capital, publishes school-level performance outcomes, and sets its own registration and reporting calendar. Diploma provision is clustered on the islands and in the newer suburbs, so a family in an outlying community can be a long way from a subject specialist by road even inside one emirate.

Al Ain

Also ADEK territory, with far fewer Diploma cohorts than the capital. Families here commonly find that the subject combination they need, particularly Higher Level sciences paired with Higher Level mathematics, is not represented in the local private tutoring market at all. This is the clearest case in the country for teaching over video.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority licenses and reviews Sharjah private schools, and many Sharjah families send children to Dubai schools while living here. That split produces a specific problem: the school's calendar, the emirate's own rules and the family's commute are three different constraints on when a weekday session can begin.

Ajman

Schools fall under the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority, and the IB continuum option here is small. Reports are published centrally, so a parent comparing two schools searches the Ministry's channels rather than a local regulator's site, which catches out families arriving from Dubai.

Ras Al Khaimah

Federal Ministry of Education oversight, a handful of international schools and one established IB continuum school. Small Diploma cohorts mean subject choices are restricted by timetable rather than by interest, and a student who wants a combination the school cannot staff is the most common reason a RAK family looks outside the school.

Fujairah

The east coast has the thinnest international provision in the country and effectively no Diploma market for private tuition. Zero of the competitor pages reviewed for this page mention Fujairah at all. Families here either commute over the mountains or work with a tutor over live video, and the second is usually the only workable answer on a school night.

Umm Al Quwain

The smallest private school sector of the seven emirates, under federal Ministry of Education oversight. Most IB families commute to Sharjah, Ajman or Dubai. The practical consequence is a very long school day, which pushes any tutoring session past 7pm and makes a fixed weekly video slot more reliable than anything involving travel.

Dubai, inspected by KHDA

Dubai holds most of the country's IB World Schools, and the KHDA report for each one is public. A parent can read the inspection judgement on teaching in the Diploma Programme before deciding whether a tutor is covering a gap in provision or a gap in a single student's understanding, which are different problems with different solutions.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, inspected by ADEK

ADEK is the authority no competitor page in the cluster names even once, which tells you how little of this market is written for Abu Dhabi families specifically. Diploma provision in the capital is concentrated in a small number of schools, and a subject combination unavailable in one of them is often unavailable in all of them.

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Sharjah private schools answer to SPEA, while Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain fall under the federal Ministry of Education. Cohorts are smaller, Higher Level options are fewer, and the gap between what a student wants to study and what the timetable can staff is wider than in Dubai.

Schools are named here as context for the UAE IB landscape only; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any school, authority or examination board named on this page, and programme authorisations change, so check the IB's own school directory before relying on any name above.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the school and the emirate

The first question is which school and which authority, because that sets the calendar, the reporting cycle and the Ministry subject position. A Dubai KHDA school and an Al Ain ADEK school produce different term dates and different internal deadlines, and the revision plan has to be built on the right one.

  2. 02

Name the subject, the level and the guide

Chemistry HL under the 2023 guide and Chemistry HL under the previous one are different courses, and the same is true across the sciences. Tell us the first-examinations year your child sits, and the match is made against that rather than against the subject name alone.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson with the specialist

One session, no payment, with the tutor who would actually teach the course. It doubles as a diagnostic: the tutor works through a past-paper question or a draft and reports back on what the real gap is, which is often not the topic the family expected.

  4. 04

Fix a weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are scheduled around school pick-up, sport and prayer times, and shift during Ramadan to post-Iftar slots where a family wants that. The slot is fixed so the homework cycle has somewhere to land, rather than negotiated again every week.

  5. 05

Written notes, then a review every six to eight weeks

Notes go out after each session in language the school can read. Every six to eight weeks there is a review against the school's own reports and the published criteria. If the tutor is not the right fit, that review is where you say so and the match changes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the guide, not only the subject

The sciences changed shape for first examinations in 2025, and Paper 3 went with the change. A tutor who prepares a student for the previous structure wastes weeks. Matching records the subject, the level and the examination year, so the person teaching knows which paper actually exists.

Built for the UAE regulatory position

KHDA, ADEK, SPEA and the federal Ministry of Education each set different conditions, and the Ministry's equivalency process sits above all of them. Knowing which one governs your child's school changes the deadlines a plan has to respect, and we ask about it before anything is scheduled.

Independent of any school or authority

IB Gram has no affiliation with any school, regulator or examination board, and nothing to protect when a report is weak. That independence is the point of asking us rather than asking the school whether a student needs outside help in a subject the school teaches.

Honesty boundaries stated before you book

Coursework sessions return written questions and annotations against the criterion letters, never replacement text, and the session record is available to the school. One provider in this market sells finished Internal Assessments. We say where the line is so you can check that anyone you hire respects it.

Reaches the emirates nobody writes about

Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain are absent from every competitor page reviewed for this research. Diploma cohorts there are small and local specialists are scarce, which is exactly the situation where teaching over live video stops being a compromise and becomes the only workable route.

Timed to the Gulf school night

A session that starts at 5pm in a UAE household competes with a commute, a sports fixture and dinner. Slots are set on Gulf Standard Time around those, move for Ramadan, and survive a family trip abroad in July without anyone losing the thread of the course.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Which authority regulates my child's IB school in the UAE?+

It depends on the emirate. KHDA regulates and inspects private schools in Dubai through the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau. ADEK covers Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Sharjah private schools answer to SPEA, the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah fall under the federal Ministry of Education. Separately, the Ministry of Education handles certificate equivalency and attestation for the whole country, whichever emirate the school sits in. The practical consequence is that comparing two schools across emirates means reading two different inspection frameworks rather than one shared scale.

Do private tutors in the UAE need a permit, and does it cost anything?+

Private tutoring here is permitted through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and on the fee every regulatory source checked for this page agrees: the MoHRE private tutor permit is free of charge. Where the applicant is employed, the employer's no-objection forms part of the process, and the Ministry publishes current validity and renewal terms on its own channels. Be careful with penalty figures circulating online. Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify fine amounts or detail the penalties, so a site quoting a precise number is quoting something unverified.

What is MoE equivalency and why does an IB Diploma need it?+

An MoE equivalency certificate is the Ministry of Education's assessment that a foreign school certificate meets UAE secondary requirements. UAE universities, federal employers and some licensing bodies work from that document rather than from the IB transcript alone. For an IB student the file generally needs the full Diploma awarded, not a Course Results certificate, with the required subject spread and no failing condition triggered, plus attested documents. The subject counts and attestation steps are revised from time to time, so read them from the Ministry's own channel in the term you apply rather than from any tutoring site, this one included.

Does my child still need Arabic and Islamic Studies alongside the Diploma?+

In UAE private schools the Ministry's requirements run alongside the international curriculum. Arabic applies to all students up to the grade the current circular specifies, with different programmes for Arab and non-Arab students. Islamic Studies applies to Muslim students. Moral, Social and Cultural Studies carries the moral education and UAE social studies content. Because none of it feeds the 45-point total, it is the first thing a busy Diploma student drops, and the hardest to reconstruct later when a record of study is needed. Ask the school for its curriculum policy and treat the requirement as a timetable fact rather than optional.

What does a KHDA or ADEK rating actually tell me about IB teaching?+

It describes the school as a provider on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and it says nothing about your individual child. Used properly it is diagnostic. If the school is judged Good or better and one Higher Level subject is still going badly, the problem is probably specific to the student and a single-subject tutor is the proportionate answer. If the report flags weak teaching in a subject group, the issue is structural. Read the body of the report, not the headline band, and check the date on it, because a three-year-old judgement describes a different staff body.

Are IB qualifications accepted by universities in the UAE?+

The IB Diploma is widely used for admission to UAE institutions, but acceptance runs through the Ministry of Education equivalency route and then through each programme's own entry requirements. Those two steps are separate and both matter. Programme requirements are set per programme rather than per university, so engineering and computing courses frequently ask for Higher Level mathematics and more often expect Analysis and Approaches than Applications and Interpretation. Check the requirement on the programme page while subject choices are still reversible in Year 12, which is usually a year earlier than families get around to it.

Can an IB tutor help with the Internal Assessment without breaking the rules?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor may teach the content, explain the criteria, mark a draft against the criterion letters an examiner will use, ask questions about a weak section and set work that closes the gap. A tutor may not draft or rewrite any part of the submission, supply the research question, provide the data, or produce a model answer that is handed in. Both the student and the school supervisor sign an authenticity declaration. IB Gram's IB Internal Assessment feedback comes back as written questions and annotations, with a session record available to the school if anyone asks.

How do lessons work if nobody comes to our home?+

Online IB tutoring in the UAE runs one-to-one over live video with a shared screen. The tutor and student work on the same document, past paper or draft, annotating as they go, and the session can be recorded for replay before a test. Nobody travels to a UAE address; home visits are part of what IB Gram offers in India only. For Diploma work that is usually an advantage, because markscheme annotation, graphing and IA feedback are screen tasks anyway, and the tutor pool is no longer limited to whoever lives within a workable drive.

Can sessions move during Ramadan or around prayer times?+

Yes. Slots are set on Gulf Standard Time around the school day, sport and prayer times, and during Ramadan families commonly move a session to a post-Iftar slot or shorten it and add a second one. Because nobody is travelling, a change of time is a change in a calendar rather than a logistical problem, and the same applies to the long UAE summer break when families leave the country. Tell us the constraint before the first session and the slot is built around it instead of being renegotiated every week.

What do IB tutors charge per hour in the UAE market?+

The market splits by tier. Budget online sessions run roughly AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online sit around AED 150 to 300, where Unitors publishes AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB. Visits involving travel run AED 180 to 500 on Bestimate's figures. IB specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishing AED 270, with examiner-level provision reaching AED 650 at BartyED. Those are other providers' published rates; IB Gram quotes after a consultation and the trial lesson is free.

My child's school is rated Acceptable. Is that why the grades are low?+

It might be part of it, but the band alone does not prove it. Acceptable means provision meets the minimum expected standard across the school, and variation between departments at that band can be wide. Read the subject-group judgements in the report and ask the school for the attainment data behind them. In practice, families at schools in this band most often need outside support in Higher Level sciences and mathematics, where specialist staffing is hardest, and plan for a sustained arrangement across a term rather than a handful of sessions before a test.

Which IB subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in the UAE?+

Higher Level sciences under the current guide, Higher Level mathematics, and anything outside the common six. An IB Maths AA HL tutor who can teach Paper 3 properly is a narrower search than a maths tutor. Add Computer Science HL, Psychology HL, Economics HL Paper 3, a second language at Higher Level, or the combination of two Higher Level sciences with Higher Level mathematics, and a family outside Dubai is often looking at nobody local at all. That gap is the clearest practical argument for widening the search beyond driving distance.

What happens if no specialist is free for my child's subject?+

We say so rather than substituting someone approximate. A general maths tutor placed on a Maths AA HL Paper 3 problem wastes the family's weeks and the student's confidence. Where nobody suitable is available at the hour you need, the options are a different time slot, a short wait for a specialist's schedule to open, or a smaller piece of work the available tutor can genuinely do, such as foundation topic repair ahead of the specialist starting. Availability transparency is cheaper for everyone than a mismatch discovered in week three.

Who actually marks the Extended Essay and the TOK essay?+

Both are marked by external IB examiners, not by the school. The Extended Essay carries 34 marks across five criteria on a 4,000-word limit; the TOK essay carries 10 marks on a prescribed title with a 1,600-word limit. The TOK exhibition, by contrast, is marked by the school and moderated by the IB. The practical point for parents is timing: once an externally marked piece is submitted, the only reader is an examiner with a criterion grid, so supervision is worth far more in the drafting weeks than any conversation afterwards.

How many points does the Diploma need, and what counts as a pass?+

Six subjects give up to 42 points, with up to three more from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix, for a maximum of 45. The Diploma is awarded from 24 points, provided no failing condition is triggered. Those conditions include a grade E in TOK or the Extended Essay, a grade 1 in any subject, too many grade 2s, and a shortfall in Higher Level points. This is why a family assembling an equivalency file should watch the conditions rather than only the total: 25 points with a failing condition is not a Diploma.

Is there a free trial lesson before we commit to anything?+

Yes, and it is a working session rather than a sales call. One lesson with the tutor who would actually teach the course, at no cost and with no payment details taken first. The tutor works through a past-paper question or an existing draft and reports back on where the marks are going, which is frequently not the topic the family had identified. If the match is wrong you say so and we change it; if it is right, the slot and the quote are agreed after that, based on the subject, the level and how many weeks remain.

Flag of the UAE

Start with the system, then fix the subject

Most tuition decisions in the UAE are made in the wrong order: a grade slips, a tutor is hired, and the regulatory and calendar facts around the student are discovered later. Reverse it. Find out which authority inspects the school and what its current report says about the subject group. Check what the Ministry of Education equivalency file will need from your child's six subjects. Confirm which guide version the examination year uses. Then hire a specialist for the gap that is left, which is usually narrower and more fixable than it looked. A free trial lesson, one-to-one over live video, is a cheap way to find out what that gap actually is.
