IB and IGCSE tutors for The Sustainable City families

Parents searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in The Sustainable City are rarely worried about classroom teaching. They are worried about the half of an IB course that no teacher can supervise: the investigation, the essay, the reading, the practice papers nobody sets. IB Gram works on exactly that half, one-to-one over live video, with the student's own drafts and marked scripts on screen.

  • Supervision timed to the school's internal deadlines, not the board's
  • Criteria read out by letter before a student starts writing
  • Every lesson one-to-one over live video, never a home visit
  • Drafts answered with questions; the writing stays the student's

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

A community on one curriculum, and the part of it that happens after school

The Sustainable City is a net-zero community of around five hundred villas on Al Qudra Road, built in clusters around biodome greenhouses, with an IB continuum school inside it. That last fact makes this community unusual in Dubai. Most neighbourhoods scatter their children across four or five curricula; here a large share of families are on one programme family, from the Primary Years Programme through the Middle Years Programme and into the Diploma, often with the same school for a decade.

A single curriculum simplifies the conversation between neighbours and sharpens one particular problem. The IB is built on work the student does alone. A Diploma subject carries an internal assessment the teacher supervises but cannot write. The Extended Essay is four thousand words produced over roughly a year with a supervisor who is allowed three formal meetings in many schools' own policies. Theory of Knowledge demands a written essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition of objects. The Personal Project at the end of MYP 5 is assessed on a process journal the student keeps themselves.

None of that is a teaching failure. It is how the programme is designed, and it is the reason a strong student with excellent reports can still arrive at February of DP2 with three unfinished components. The school has delivered the taught content. What it cannot deliver is the twenty or thirty hours of independent judgement each component needs, spread across months, in the gaps between every other deadline.

There is a second consequence of a one-curriculum community that parents notice late. Because so many neighbours are in the same programme, information travels fast and arrives slightly wrong. A family hears that the Extended Essay is marked out of thirty-four, or that a particular subject is an easy seven, or that six IGCSE subjects are needed for Ministry equivalency, and the claim gets repeated until it is treated as settled. Two of those three examples are wrong, and the third depends on the subject. Anything that will shape a subject choice or a deadline is worth checking against the school's own documents or the authority's own page rather than against the street.

That gap is what this page is about. It sets out which components sit outside taught lessons, what the MYP criteria actually reward, how to choose an investigation question when your own neighbourhood is full of measurable environmental data, where a tutor must stop on work that has to be the student's own, what supervision costs in the Dubai market, and what an IB leaver has to show the Ministry of Education for equivalency. Every lesson described runs online. IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and for draft work a shared screen is better than a shared table anyway.

At a glance

  • An IB continuum community, so one family often spans PYP, MYP and DP at once
  • Four to six assessed components per Diploma student sit largely outside lesson time
  • The Extended Essay is capped at 4,000 words and runs across about a year
  • MYP subjects are marked against four criteria out of eight, not a single percentage
  • All IB Gram UAE lessons are one-to-one on live video, scheduled by the household
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages run inside this community at once, and each one hands the student a different kind of independent work. The notes below describe what each stage leaves unsupervised rather than what it teaches.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, with no grades on most reports and an exhibition in the final year. Parents often cannot tell from a PYP report whether a child is behind in arithmetic or reading, because the reporting language describes dispositions rather than attainment. The exhibition at the end is the first piece of extended independent work most children produce.

Families here usually meet standardised testing for the first time around Year 4, when Dubai schools administer cognitive and attainment tests. A PYP report plus a test percentile is a far more useful pairing than either alone, and reading the two together is often the only diagnostic a Sustainable City primary family actually needs.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Each subject is assessed against four criteria, marked out of eight, and converted to a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. A student can revise content thoroughly and see no movement, because the task was weighted to a criterion they never practised. MYP 5 adds the Personal Project, assessed on planning, action and reflection recorded in a process journal.

Dubai private schools also run Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies for every pupil regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. For an MYP student here that is real timetable time on subjects outside the four criteria, which is why the independent workload lands in evenings.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects plus three core components. Each subject carries internal assessment marked against criteria named by letter; Theory of Knowledge requires an essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition; the Extended Essay runs to 4,000 words. Higher Level adds an extra paper in most sciences and considerably more content depth in mathematics.

Confirm every IB session, upload and results date with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. This page does not publish IB dates, because they could not be verified from the IB directly for this project, and the school's internal deadlines sit weeks earlier than the board's in any case.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects most often requested from this community, described by the independent work each one demands rather than by its syllabus headings.

Biology

IB HL and SL

The internal assessment needs a measurable variable, a repeatable method and statistical treatment of the results. Most lost marks sit in the analysis and evaluation criteria rather than the biology. A student who collects data before defining the hypothesis has usually lost those marks before the writing starts.

Environmental Systems and Societies

IB SL

An interdisciplinary course that rewards systems thinking and penalises description. The internal assessment is an individual investigation with a strong preference for primary data, which students in a community built around measurable resource use are unusually well placed to collect.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL

Energetics, kinetics and organic mechanisms carry the Higher Level difficulty. The internal assessment fails most often on scope: a question broad enough to be interesting is usually too broad to measure in the time and equipment available.

Physics

IB HL and SL

The shift from recall to derivation catches strong IGCSE students in the first Diploma term. Uncertainty propagation and error analysis are examinable and almost never practised deliberately, which is where the investigation marks are quietly lost.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Marks are awarded for reasoning, so an unjustified correct answer scores a fraction of what is available. The exploration needs genuine mathematics rather than an application of a formula, and choosing a topic that allows real manipulation is most of the work.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology. Students lose marks presenting a test without stating the hypothesis, the assumptions or a conclusion in context, and the exploration often repeats a textbook procedure instead of interpreting a result.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper one is unseen guided analysis, which cannot be revised by rereading set texts. The individual oral needs a global issue and two prepared extracts, and Higher Level adds an essay that must build an argument rather than summarise a text.

Economics

IB HL and SL

Diagram precision decides grades, and an unlabelled axis costs marks the prose cannot recover. The commentaries require real published articles within a stated word limit, and the common error is choosing an article that will not support the required analysis.

Theory of Knowledge

Diploma core

An essay on one of the prescribed titles plus an exhibition of three objects with a written commentary. Students treat it as unteachable; in fact the marks go to precise claim and counterclaim structure, which is coachable in a handful of sessions if started early enough.

Arabic as an additional language

MoE mandatory stream

Mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and the school's curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Moral, Social and Cultural studies. Non-Arab students joining late need script and vocabulary work at a pace the timetable cannot provide.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover what this community asks for. All run online, one-to-one, and the right one depends on which component is unfinished.

Component supervision

Sessions built around one assessed component: an internal assessment, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay or the Personal Project. The tutor reads the criteria out by letter, interrogates the question, and responds to drafts the student has written with questions rather than corrections.

  • Criteria and strands mapped before any writing begins
  • Scheduled to the school's internal draft deadlines
  • One full student-written draft read and questioned per component
  • Nothing supplied that a student could submit as their own

Weekly subject teaching

The standard arrangement for a student who is coping in class but losing marks on papers. Same tutor, same slot, following the school's scheme of work, with homework set against the next school assessment rather than a generic worksheet.

  • Diagnostic from marked work before teaching starts
  • Command-term practice on every written answer
  • Written note after each session naming what was set
  • Review against marked work every four to six weeks

Independent-study coaching

For students whose content knowledge is sound and whose unsupervised hours produce nothing. The work is scheduling, retrieval practice, past-paper discipline and the habit of marking their own script against a published scheme before asking anyone else to look at it.

  • A written weekly plan the student actually keeps
  • Self-marking against mark schemes the school supplies
  • Timed practice at the real paper length
  • Fortnightly check that the plan survived contact with the term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

Which components the timetable cannot cover

Start by separating the course into what a teacher delivers and what the student produces. Taught content is the school's job and most schools here do it well. Everything in the second column is supervised rather than taught: the teacher may advise, read a limited number of drafts, and sign the work off as authentic, but the thinking, the data and the writing have to be the student's own.

Add the hours up and the scale becomes clear. A Diploma student with six subjects has six internal assessments, each needing somewhere between fifteen and thirty hours of independent work. On top of that sit a four-thousand-word Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition, and the CAS record. None of those appears on a weekly homework sheet, and all of them have school deadlines that cluster in the same two terms.

This is where most Sustainable City enquiries come from, and it explains a pattern that confuses parents: a child with good lesson reports and poor component progress. The reports describe the taught half. The missing half is invisible until a deadline is two weeks away. The honest diagnosis is almost never that the student is weak, and almost always that nobody has scheduled the independent hours.

There is a practical way to see the problem before a deadline arrives. Ask your child to list every assessed component they owe, with the school's internal deadline next to each, in one place, on one page. Most students cannot do it from memory, and the act of writing it out usually reveals two components nobody had started and one that was quietly finished weeks ago. That list is also the only document a supervision plan needs, because it converts a vague sense of pressure into a sequence of dated tasks that can be worked through in order.

02

The three handovers inside an IB continuum, and where each one leaks

Families who stay in one continuum school from Primary Years to Diploma assume the transitions are smooth, because the programmes share a philosophy. The philosophy is shared; the assessment is not. Each handover changes what a mark means, and a child who was praised consistently for years can suddenly be told they are at a 4.

The first handover is PYP to MYP. A child moves from reports describing dispositions to subject grades built from four criteria with published descriptors. Parents see numbers for the first time and frequently misread them, because an MYP 5 is a sound performance and looks like a failure to anyone used to percentages.

The second is MYP into the Diploma, and it is the steepest. The MYP rewards process, reflection and communication; the Diploma rewards precision against command terms and tight analytical writing under time pressure. Students who learned to write expansively in MYP write too much and too loosely in DP1. The third handover is DP1 into DP2, where the independent components stop being future problems and all arrive at once. Each of these is predictable, which means each is preparable, and none of them is usually prepared for.

A fourth transition exists that nobody names, and it is the one out of the Diploma into a university application. Predicted grades are issued during DP2 on the basis of work completed by that point, which means the components left unfinished in DP1 affect an offer long before the final examinations. Families who understand that stop treating internal assessments as end-of-course paperwork and start treating them as the evidence behind a prediction. That reframing does more for a Diploma result than any amount of revision in the final term, and it costs nothing but a conversation in the first year.

03

MYP criteria, named by letter, and why effort sometimes moves nothing

Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D, each marked out of eight against published strands. The letters mean different things in different subject groups, which is the first thing parents need to know: criterion C in a science is not criterion C in a language. What is constant is that a task is designed to assess some criteria and not others.

That design is why revision can produce no change. A student who spends a fortnight memorising content walks into a task weighted towards analysis or communication and scores what they scored before. The fix is not more effort; it is reading the task sheet, which almost always names the criteria being assessed, and preparing against those strands.

The second thing worth knowing is how criterion marks become a grade. The four marks are added to a figure out of thirty-two and converted to a 1 to 7 grade using boundaries published for each subject group. A student sitting at the bottom of a grade band may need two marks across two criteria to move a whole grade, which is a specific and achievable target. A student at the top of a band may gain six marks and move nothing. Asking the teacher which criterion is closest to a boundary turns a vague worry into a piece of work.

One more thing is worth asking the school for. Many MYP departments publish the task-specific clarifications they use when marking, which translate the general strand descriptors into the language of that particular task. Those clarifications are what the teacher marks against, and a student who has read them before starting writes to a different standard than one working from the generic criterion. Requesting them is reasonable and routine, and a tutor can use them in a single session to show a student exactly which sentence in their own work would earn a mark and which would not.

04

Choosing an investigation question when your own neighbourhood is the dataset

Students here have an advantage most Dubai candidates do not. A community engineered around measurable resource use produces primary data that is genuinely accessible: irrigation and greywater reuse, photovoltaic output against time of day and season, shaded against unshaded surface temperature, growth rates under different conditions in a greenhouse, waste separation rates, the effect of car-free streets on recorded movement. Primary data is what the analysis criteria reward, and it is the hardest thing for most candidates to get.

The discipline is narrowing. A question like whether the community is sustainable cannot be assessed; a question about how shading affects recorded surface temperature across three surface types at fixed times of day can be. The test is whether the student can name the independent variable, the dependent variable, the controlled variables and the number of repeats before they collect anything. If any of those four is missing, the data will not support the analysis the criteria ask for.

The second discipline is permission and honesty. Data collected from a neighbour's property, a school facility or a community system needs consent, and the method section has to say how the measurements were taken rather than implying a precision the instruments did not have. A tutor can interrogate all of this, suggest how comparable published investigations were structured, and check the plan against the criteria. The student designs it, collects it, analyses it and writes it. That division is not a formality; it is what makes the work submissible.

05

Where a tutor has to stop, and what the IB asks the school to confirm

  • Explaining criteria and strands before writing starts: appropriate
  • Questioning a research question until it is measurable: appropriate
  • Reading one student-written draft and replying with questions: appropriate
  • Supplying text, data, structure to copy or a finished component: never
  • Session records available to the school on request

Internally assessed work carries an authentication step. The supervisor confirms the work is the student's own, and a student whose submission is not faces a malpractice process rather than a low mark. The outcome lands on the child, not on whoever was paid to help, which is why the boundary belongs in the first session rather than in small print.

The Dubai market contains operators selling the thing that breaks this. The research behind these pages found one advertising completed internal assessments at a fixed price. That is not tutoring; it is an integrity breach with a diploma attached. A provider willing to sell it is telling you what their other claims are worth.

The legitimate scope is wide enough to be genuinely useful. A tutor may teach the content, explain criteria strand by strand, question a research design until it is measurable, point to published work as a structural example, read one draft the student wrote and reply with questions, and check length and formatting against the current subject guide. A tutor may not write, rewrite, edit to completion, supply data, or hand over anything the student could submit. We also keep a record of what was discussed in a supervision session, and will release it if the school asks.

Parents sometimes ask where the line sits when a student is genuinely stuck rather than looking for shortcuts. The answer is that the tutor changes the question rather than supplies the answer. A student who cannot analyse their results is asked what the pattern would look like if the hypothesis were true, and what it looks like instead. A student whose essay has no argument is asked to say in one sentence what they are claiming. That kind of questioning moves work forward without any of the tutor's words entering the submission, and it is also how the thinking actually improves.

06

What component supervision costs in the Dubai market

Supervision is priced differently from weekly teaching, and most of the market does not explain the difference. A weekly subject slot is an ongoing arrangement at an hourly rate. Component supervision is a small number of longer sessions at specific points: question design, method review, draft response, final checks. Four well-timed hours across three months usually beats twelve hours bought in a panic in the last fortnight.

The figures below are Dubai market rates published in October 2026, attributed to whoever published them. They are not an IB Gram price list, and they exist here because three of the six agency pages ranking for these searches publish no figure at all. Compare any quote you receive against the band rather than against a feeling.

Set the number against your existing bill. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under an economic incentives package worth AED 1.5 billion. Tuition is therefore the part of the education budget that can be shaped this year, and the shape that works for an IB household is a small number of supervision hours placed early rather than a large block placed late.

Ask one question of any provider before you pay: is the quoted figure per sixty-minute hour or per session, and what is included. A ninety-minute supervision session quoted at an hourly rate is a different number, and marked feedback, a written session note and access to the tutor between sessions are either inside the price or they are not. Several providers in this market publish a headline rate and then add a registration fee, a materials charge or a minimum block of sessions. Getting the total for a component in writing beforehand prevents the most common billing dispute in this sector.

Why a draft supervises better on a screen than across a table

This is the one comparison where online delivery is not a compromise. Component supervision is document work. The criteria, the draft, the data file and the subject guide all need to be visible to two people at once, with one of them pointing at a specific strand and the other scrolling to a specific paragraph. On a shared screen that is natural. Across a dining table it means one laptop turned sideways and a printed copy nobody is annotating.

The second reason is the pool. Supervision requires someone who knows the criteria for that subject at that level, which is a narrower requirement than being able to teach the content. Filtering those people by whether they will drive to Al Qudra Road at five in the afternoon removes most of them. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all, so the filter never applies, and the specialist is chosen on the component rather than the postcode.

The third is record-keeping. An online session leaves a written note of what was discussed and what the student agreed to do next, which is exactly what a school wants to see if a question is ever raised about authenticity. A conversation in a kitchen leaves nothing. For work that has to be defensible as the student's own, that paper trail is worth having.

The last argument is about scheduling, which decides whether supervision happens at all. Component work needs a session at the moment the student is ready for it, which is rarely a fixed weekly slot: the draft-response hour has to come after the draft exists. An online arrangement can be moved to the Thursday the draft is finished. A visiting arrangement is built around a driving route and a fixed evening, and when the draft slips by four days the session happens anyway, too early to be useful. Flexibility is not a comfort here; it is what makes the hour worth buying.

What an IB leaver has to show the Ministry of Education

Equivalency is the process by which the UAE Ministry of Education recognises a school-leaving certificate for use here, including for university admission and some employment. It is worth understanding in DP1 rather than discovering in July of DP2, because the requirements are about which subjects were taken and passed, and by then nothing can be changed.

The British-track rules are published and specific. A student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. One competitor ranking for these searches states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong, and parents repeat it. The American track sets separate tests: English through IELTS at 5, TOEFL iBT at 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics through at least 450 in SAT Math.

For the IB there is a point worth stating plainly: no points threshold is published in the source used for the figures above, so this page does not give one. Check the requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate attestation authority before relying on anything you have been told, including by a school. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency, and tutoring is not required for it. What we can do is make sure a student knows in DP1 which documents and which subjects the process will ask about.

Starting, and the order the work should happen in

The useful first message is not a request for a tutor. It is a list: the school, the subjects and levels, which components are outstanding, the school's own internal deadline for each, and the most recent marked piece of work. A supervision plan is built backwards from those deadlines, and without them the first session is spent gathering information you already had.

The sequence that works is diagnostic, then question design, then method or structure, then one draft response, then final checks. Most households here need four to six supervision hours per component rather than a weekly slot, and often need a weekly slot in only one subject alongside it. We will say which, and we will say if we think a component is too far gone for supervision to be the right purchase.

Three limits, stated before payment. We do not promise grades or points totals. We do not place tutors in homes in the UAE; delivery is one-to-one online, and if that is not acceptable we are the wrong provider. And we will not produce, edit to completion or supply any part of an assessed component, however late the deadline is or however the request is phrased.

One further note on sequencing, because the order matters more than the hours. Supervision bought before a question is defined saves far more time than supervision bought after data has been collected, since a badly framed question cannot be rescued by better writing. If you have to choose a single hour, spend it on the question. If you can afford a second, spend it on the method or the structure. The draft-response hour is the one most families buy first, and it is the one that would have been unnecessary if the first two had happened.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Sustainable City

This part of Dubai is a line of communities along Al Qudra Road and the Dubailand belt, sharing buses and schools. The notes below describe what each one changes about an evening timetable.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

The nearest established school cluster, with IB continuum and Indian-curriculum provision. A short run west, and the direction most Sustainable City families look when the community school has no place in a year group.

Mudon

Immediately along Al Qudra Road, with its own primary provision. Shared bus routes mean Mudon and Sustainable City children often arrive home within ten minutes of each other, so sibling scheduling across the two communities works.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer villas with young families and a longer run to secondary schools. Households here often keep an older child at a school nearer Motor City, producing two different pick-up times in one family.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Fifteen minutes north and the main source of British-curriculum places for families who do not want the Diploma. Afternoon congestion around the academies pushes a realistic lesson start past 17:00.

Remraam and Dubailand

Lower-density communities further along the same corridor, with their own British-curriculum school. The run between them and Al Qudra Road is quick outside peak and slow between 15:00 and 16:30.

DAMAC Hills

East across Umm Suqeim Street, with a large British-curriculum school taking children from this whole belt. Families on that bus route tend to settle on two weekday evenings and one weekend morning.

Al Barsha South

Twenty-five minutes up the Hessa Street extension and the closest concentration of established IB and British secondary schools. The morning run is tolerable; the return at 15:30 is the reason evening slots dominate here.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Sustainable City

The Sustainable City and Al Qudra Road

An IB continuum school inside the community itself, which is why so many households here share one programme family. Children who do not attend it usually travel to the Dubai Investments Park cluster or north towards Motor City.

The Dubailand and Motor City belt

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the deadline list

School, subjects and levels, every outstanding component, and the school's internal deadline for each. School deadlines sit weeks before anything a board publishes, and the plan is built backwards from them rather than from the examination session.

  2. 02

    Diagnostic hour

One online session reviewing marked work and the current state of each component. The output is a written note saying which problem you actually have: missing content, undefined question, collected but unusable data, or a draft that answers a different question.

  3. 03

Match on the component, not the subject

Supervision needs someone who knows the criteria for that subject at that level. We match on that, say how long it will take, and tell you if the only available specialist works in a time zone that suits early mornings or late evenings.

  4. 04

    Place the hours early

Four hours spread across question design, method review, draft response and final checks beat twelve hours in the last fortnight. Sessions are booked to the school's dates, with the draft-response hour scheduled after the student has written, not before.

    Record and hand back

Each session produces a written note of what was discussed and what the student agreed to do next. The notes stay available to you and to the school on request, which is useful if any question about authenticity ever arises.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built for the unsupervised half

Most tutoring is sold against classroom content. The components that decide an IB grade sit outside lessons, and supervision for them is a different service with different timing. This page exists because that is what households in this community actually ask for.

A boundary your child hears out loud

Tutors state in the first session what they will and will not do with assessed work. That conversation is protection for the student, because authentication failures fall on the candidate rather than on the person who was paid.

Specialists chosen on criteria knowledge

Supervision needs someone who knows the mark criteria for that subject at that level, not a generalist who is willing to drive out to Al Qudra Road. Online delivery is what makes that selection possible from this community.

Rates you can check

Every AED figure on this page names who published it and when. Three of the six agencies ranking for these searches publish no price at all, so comparing a quote against a sourced band is something you can only do here.

Limits said in advance

No grade promises, no fabricated success statistics, no claim of accreditation from KHDA, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no UAE office. Where a specialist is scarce or slow to match, you hear that before you pay rather than afterwards.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

My son's lesson reports are good but his internal assessments are late. What is going on?+

Reports describe the taught half of the course, and internal assessments live in the other half. Six Diploma subjects carry six investigations, each needing fifteen to thirty independent hours, and none of that appears on a weekly homework sheet. A student can be doing everything asked of them in lessons and still have four unfinished components. The diagnosis is almost never weakness; it is that nobody scheduled the independent hours. Fixing it means working backwards from the school's own deadlines and placing specific tasks in specific weeks.

How many supervision hours does one internal assessment actually need?+

Four to six, placed at the right moments, is usually enough. One hour on narrowing the question until the variables are nameable, one on method or structure before any data is collected, one responding to a draft the student has written, and one on final checks against the criteria and the formatting requirements. Hours added in the last fortnight buy much less, because by then the data is fixed and the only remaining improvement is in the writing. Early hours change what the investigation can score; late hours only protect it.

Can my daughter use data from inside The Sustainable City for her investigation?+

Yes, and it is a genuine advantage. Primary data is what the analysis criteria reward and what most candidates struggle to obtain. Measurable options here include photovoltaic output against time of day, shaded versus unshaded surface temperature, greenhouse growth under controlled conditions, irrigation or greywater reuse, and recorded movement on car-free streets. Two conditions apply: she must get permission for anything measured on school or community property, and the method must describe exactly how readings were taken rather than implying precision the instruments did not have.

Why did a fortnight of revision not move my child's MYP grade?+

Because the task was probably weighted to criteria the revision never touched. Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D and marked out of eight, and a task sheet usually names which criteria it assesses. Memorising content prepares criterion A and leaves B, C and D where they were. The practical move is to read the task sheet, ask the teacher which criterion sits closest to a grade boundary, and prepare against that strand. Two marks on the right criterion can move a whole grade.

What is the hardest transition inside an IB continuum?+

Middle Years into the Diploma, by a wide margin. The MYP rewards process, reflection and extended communication; the Diploma rewards precision against command terms and tight analytical writing under timed conditions. Students who learned to write expansively write too much and too loosely in the first Diploma term, and their marks fall even though their understanding has not. It is predictable and therefore preparable: command-term discipline and timed practice in the first term of DP1 prevent most of the drop that otherwise shows up in the first mock.

Does a tutor ever write part of an Extended Essay?+

No, and any provider who offers to is describing malpractice. A supervisor has to authenticate the essay as the student's own work, and a finding against the submission falls on the candidate. What a tutor can legitimately do is explain the assessment criteria, challenge the research question until four thousand words can actually answer it, show how comparable published work was structured, read one draft the student has written and reply with questions, and check formatting and referencing requirements. The writing, the argument and the sources remain the student's.

How do MYP criterion marks turn into a 1 to 7 grade?+

The four criterion marks, each out of eight, are added to give a total out of thirty-two, and that total is converted using grade boundaries published for each subject group. The consequence worth knowing is that movement is uneven: a student sitting just below a boundary may need two extra marks on one criterion to gain a whole grade, while a student at the top of a band can gain six marks and move nothing. Asking which criterion is nearest a boundary turns an anxious conversation into a defined piece of work.

Is Theory of Knowledge actually teachable?+

Yes, more than students assume. The essay is on a prescribed title and the marks go to a controlled structure: a precise interpretation of the title, claims supported by real examples, genuine counterclaims, and evaluation rather than assertion. That structure is coachable in a handful of sessions. The exhibition needs three objects linked to one prompt with a written commentary explaining how each connects, which is mostly a selection problem. Both fail for the same reason, which is being left until the term everything else is due.

What does equivalency require from a British-curriculum leaver?+

Five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited Advanced Level subject at no lower than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. A competitor page ranking for these searches claims six subjects are required, which is wrong. For the IB, no points threshold appears in the source behind those figures, so check moe.gov.ae or the attestation authority directly rather than relying on a tutoring site.

Do tutors visit villas on Al Qudra Road?+

IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE. Every lesson here is one-to-one over live video; home visiting is a service we operate only in India. For component supervision the screen is genuinely better: the criteria, the draft, the data file and the subject guide are visible to both people at once, and each session leaves a written record of what was discussed. A visiting tutor would also have to be someone willing to drive out at five in the afternoon, which removes most of the specialists from the choice.

What should a Diploma student have finished by the end of DP1?+

Enough that DP2 is about papers rather than paperwork. Realistically that means a defined Extended Essay research question with a supervisor meeting behind it, at least one internal assessment with data collected and analysed, a clear plan for the remaining investigations, Theory of Knowledge title shortlisted, and CAS reflections written as the activities happened rather than reconstructed later. Schools publish their own internal deadlines for most of this, and those dates, not the board's, are the ones a plan has to respect.

Can one tutor supervise two components in different subjects?+

Sometimes, with caution. The generic skills overlap: narrowing a question, defining variables, structuring an argument, reading criteria carefully. The specific marking does not, because the criteria and their strands differ by subject and level. For two investigations in related sciences a single specialist often works. For a maths exploration and a history essay it rarely does, and the right answer is two people for a small number of hours each rather than one person stretched across both.

Are lessons available during Ramadan and the summer break?+

Yes, with the timing changed. During Ramadan school days are shortened and most households move sessions to after Iftar, which suits Diploma students working on components at night. Over the long summer, families travelling out of the UAE often keep a reduced schedule online from wherever they are, which is one practical benefit of video delivery. The weeks worth protecting are those immediately before mocks and before an examination series, and those get agreed in advance rather than cancelled late.

What is the first thing to send if we want to start?+

A deadline list. The school, each subject and level, every outstanding component, the school's internal deadline for each, and the most recent marked piece of work. That lets a supervision plan be built backwards from real dates in the first hour rather than the third. If you can add the task sheet or criteria document the school issued, better again, because the plan then names strands rather than subjects and the first session starts with work instead of questions.

What will IB Gram refuse to do?+

We will not write, rewrite, edit to completion or supply any part of an assessed component, however close the deadline is. We will not promise a grade or a points total. We will not send anyone to a UAE address, because delivery here is online only. We hold no accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson and will not imply otherwise, and we do not perform or guarantee equivalency, which is a matter for the Ministry and the attestation authority.

Work backwards from the school's deadlines

If your child is in the Diploma or the final MYP year, the most useful hour you can buy is one spent mapping every outstanding component against the school's own internal dates. That usually shows that two components need urgent attention, two need a question narrowed, and the rest need nothing yet. Send the deadline list and the last marked piece of work and we will say what the sequence should be, how many supervision hours it needs, and which weekly subject slot, if any, is worth adding. Where the honest answer is that a component is a school conversation rather than a tutoring purchase, we will tell you that instead.
