American curriculum to IB transition in the UAE: the real cost of the switch

An american curriculum to IB transition in the UAE swaps one grading philosophy for another. A GPA is earned across a semester by assignments, quizzes and participation; a Diploma score is produced by terminal examinations and a handful of assessed independent projects. That change costs a term of habit and a measurable amount of money, and this page sets out both — including the Ministry of Education equivalency tests an American-track student has to sit regardless. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

Two grading philosophies, and the cost of moving between them

American-curriculum students in the UAE are assessed continuously. A semester grade is built from homework, quizzes, projects, class participation and unit tests, weighted by a scheme the teacher publishes at the start of the year. Diploma students are assessed terminally in most subjects, with a fixed share of each grade coming from one internal assessment produced over months. Those are not two versions of the same thing. They reward completely different working habits, and the cost of this transition is mostly the cost of changing habit under time pressure.

The practical shape of it is this. A student used to a GPA knows that consistent effort accumulates and that a bad test can be recovered by the next assignment. A Diploma student discovers that effort through October is invisible in May, and that the thing which actually determines the grade is an examination they will sit once, plus a piece of independent work they have to scope themselves. The students who struggle most in DP1 are often the diligent ones, because diligence was the system they had mastered.

In Dubai, US-curriculum schools accounted for 14 per cent of private-school pupils in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on UK curricula, 26 per cent Indian and 7 per cent International Baccalaureate, across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula. That matters when a family goes looking for help: the number of UAE tutors fluent in the specific gap between a Grade 10 Honors course and a DP1 syllabus is smaller than the number fluent in either system separately.

There is also a cost line unique to American-track families, and it has nothing to do with tutoring. For Ministry of Education equivalency, the American track requires English proficiency shown by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those tests carry their own fees and their own preparation time, and the requirement does not disappear because a student has moved onto a Diploma — the certificate being presented is what determines the track, so verify the current position for your child's eventual certificate on moe.gov.ae rather than assuming.

On what support costs, this page quotes the market rather than a price list. Published Dubai rates run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to 450 or above for exam-year specialists; in-home visits run AED 180 to 500 with travel priced inside them. Those figures belong to the providers and rate tables named in the tables below. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson, per subject and per core component, with the scope written down.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For this transition the scarce resource is somebody who can read both systems at once, and that person is found by searching across a timezone rather than across a neighbourhood.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four routes an American-curriculum family in the UAE is actually choosing between at 15 or 16. The Diploma is one, and the comparison that matters most is with Advanced Placement rather than with the standard high-school diploma.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

IB Diploma Programme

A single two-year qualification rather than a collection of courses: six subjects across six prescribed groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus an Extended Essay of 4,000 words, Theory of Knowledge with an essay and an exhibition, and CAS. Scored out of 45 points with 24 needed to pass, and three of those points awarded from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix.

In the UAE the Diploma is a minority route with a solid institutional base — 7 per cent of Dubai private-school pupils in 2024-25 — and it is growing: three of the seven new schools opening in Dubai for 2026-27 are International Baccalaureate, part of 16,846 new places. For an American-curriculum family that means more Diploma seats, and more competition for experienced Diploma teachers at the same time.

APAges 15-18 · Grades 10-12

Advanced Placement within a US high-school diploma

Individual college-level courses sat as standalone examinations alongside a standard high-school diploma, each scored 1 to 5. A student chooses how many to take and when, and the diploma itself is awarded on credits and GPA rather than on the AP results. There is no core, no compulsory breadth beyond the school's graduation requirements, and no compulsory second language in most schools.

This is the real alternative, and it is often the better one. A student can take three or four APs in genuine strengths without carrying a forced sixth subject, and can add one in Grade 12 if a university target changes. Per-exam fees are published by the College Board and change, so check the current figure on the College Board's own site rather than on a tutoring page.

MYPAges 11-16 · Grades 6-10

IB Middle Years Programme

The five years before the Diploma in a continuum school, assessed against criteria A to D in every subject group with a Personal Project in the final year. Students arriving into DP1 from MYP have used criterion-based marking and command terms for years, which is precisely the fluency an American-curriculum arrival spends its first term acquiring.

Where a UAE school offers both MYP and a US middle-school programme, moving a child at Grade 8 or 9 rather than at Grade 10 removes most of the cost of this transition. The child reaches DP1 already fluent in criteria, and the family never pays for the first-term adjustment that Grade 10 arrivals almost always need.

CPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

IB Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses combined with a career-related study and a separate core including a reflective project and personal and professional skills. Smaller and less widely offered in the UAE than the full Diploma, and genuinely worth asking about where a student is strong in two subjects and would be carrying a third only to satisfy a group requirement.

Availability varies school by school across the emirates, so confirm directly with the sixth form rather than assuming the IB label includes it. For equivalency and admissions purposes, treat it as a different certificate from the full Diploma and check its recognition with the relevant authority before building a plan on it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subject by subject, where a US Honors or AP background leaves a student relative to a Diploma course, and which gap costs money to close. The pattern is unlike the IGCSE pattern: breadth of coverage is usually fine, depth per topic is the gap.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Honors Algebra II and Precalculus cover much of the Standard Level ground, but the Diploma expects algebraic fluency without technology on one paper and proof as a routine expectation. Students who have always worked with a graphing calculator in reach lose marks on manipulation rather than on concepts, which is a drill problem and cheap to fix early.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Often the better fit for an American-curriculum arrival, because modelling, data handling and technology-permitted assessment match how US courses already work. The HL statistics content is substantial and the exploration still needs supervision, but the adjustment cost is markedly lower than on the Analysis route.

Physics

HL and SL

AP Physics 1 or 2 leaves a student in reasonable shape on mechanics and electricity. What is new is uncertainty treatment, graph linearisation and the individual investigation, which is an open-ended experimental project assessed against criteria rather than a lab report marked for neatness.

Chemistry

HL and SL

AP Chemistry overlaps heavily with Diploma Higher Level and in places goes further. The adjustment is in assessment style: the data-based question expects use of the provided booklet, and extended-response marks are earned by explanation chains in chemical language rather than by arriving at the right number.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume is the issue. Diploma Biology is wide and examined with precise command terms, and a student used to unit tests on discrete chapters has to hold the whole course at once for a terminal paper. Steady low-intensity support across DP1 costs far less than a concentrated rescue block in DP2.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

American-curriculum students usually write confidently and cite properly. The new apparatus is the analysis of how meaning is constructed in context, plus the individual oral and, at Higher Level, the HL essay. A strong English GPA predicts very little here, which surprises families in the first reporting cycle.

Group 2 languages, including Spanish, French and Arabic

HL, SL and ab initio

Many US schools require two or three years of a world language, so an American-curriculum arrival is often better placed here than a British-curriculum one. Confirm which languages the Diploma school offers and at which level, because continuity is worth real money and a language restarted at ab initio is two years of work.

History

HL and SL

AP US History or World History builds strong source habits and essay structure. The Diploma's historical investigation has a formal structure with its own source-evaluation section, and the Higher Level extension adds a depth study with a separate paper. Reading volume is the cost, which is time rather than tuition.

Economics

HL and SL

AP Microeconomics and Macroeconomics cover much of the content. The Diploma's internal assessment is a set of commentaries on published news articles against specific criteria, which is a research and writing skill rather than a content one and is the component most likely to need structured supervision.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a substantial internal assessment and, at Higher Level, a pre-released case study the whole cohort prepares. Students from US business or economics electives find the content accessible and the evaluation demands new: recommending and justifying carries the marks.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL, and HL where offered

A frequently useful choice for an American-curriculum arrival because it can satisfy either the science or the humanities group in some timetables, which relieves pressure on a six-subject grid. Assessment is strongly data and fieldwork based, so a student comfortable with lab work and project assessment tends to settle quickly.

Visual Arts and Film

HL and SL

Portfolio and process subjects assessed over two years against criteria, with documentation requirements that are unlike anything in a US arts elective. Support here is process coaching — journals, sourcing, deadlines — rather than teaching, and families who treat Group 6 as the timetable's easy slot usually revise that view in DP2.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways an American-curriculum family buys support through this move, each priced on scope rather than on an open-ended hourly arrangement. All sessions run one-to-one over live video.

A route comparison before the Grade 11 choices are made

One or two sessions that end in a decision rather than a lesson. The tutor reads the transcript, the Honors and AP record and the intended university destinations, then sets out what a six-group Diploma grid would force into the timetable, what three or four APs would leave open, and roughly what each route costs in support over two years.

  • Reads the actual transcript and the school's real course catalogue
  • Identifies which Diploma group would carry the weakest subject
  • Maps the mathematics route against named programme prerequisites
  • Puts a two-year support estimate on both routes before you commit

A first-term adjustment block in DP1

A finite set of sessions aimed at the single shared problem an American-curriculum arrival has: criteria, command terms and the move from continuous credit to terminal assessment. Worked across two or three subjects at once rather than bought separately in each, because the deficit is one skill rather than several content gaps.

  • Command terms taught as a vocabulary with fixed meanings
  • Criteria read as a mark scheme rather than as guidance
  • Retrieval and spacing routines to replace assignment-driven study
  • Ends when the problem is solved, not when the term does

Equivalency and admissions test preparation, separately costed

For families whose eventual certificate puts them on the American track, SAT or English-test preparation is a different job from Diploma teaching and is quoted separately. The thresholds are published — IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450, and SAT Math at least 450 — so the target is a specific score, not an open-ended improvement.

  • Targeted at the published threshold rather than at a maximum score
  • Scoped in sessions, with a stated end point
  • Kept out of Diploma subject time so neither displaces the other
  • Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae before booking

01

GPA to points: the answer in one paragraph, then the detail

  • Continuous recoverable assessment traded for terminal assessment plus one project per subject
  • The organised, assignment-driven student is usually the one whose grades dip first
  • The forced subject is normally the second language or the Group 6 elective
  • MoE American track: IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61, or SAT reading and writing 450; SAT Math 450
  • No IB points threshold for equivalency appears in the source read, so none is quoted here

An American-curriculum student moving to the Diploma is trading a system that rewards consistent visible effort for one that rewards accumulated understanding and independent project management. A GPA is built continuously from assignments, quizzes, participation and unit tests, and it is recoverable: a weak week is averaged away by a strong one. A Diploma grade in most subjects comes from terminal examinations plus one internal assessment, and nothing done in October appears anywhere except as preparation.

The cost of that trade is concentrated in the first two terms and it falls on a specific kind of student. The diligent, organised, assignment-completing student has mastered the system they are leaving, and their first Diploma reports are frequently worse than their GPA suggested — not because they have become weaker, but because the behaviour that produced the GPA produces middling criterion marks in a system that asks for something else. Meanwhile the student who always tested well and did their homework late sometimes improves.

The second cost is structural and permanent. A US high-school diploma is a credit-based award with elective freedom; the Diploma is a six-group grid. Somewhere in that grid there will be a subject your child would not have chosen. For American-curriculum arrivals the forced subject is usually the second language or the arts and electives group, and it is where the support budget should go — not into the Higher Level the student picked and enjoys.

The third cost is administrative and specific to this track. Ministry of Education equivalency on the American route requires English proficiency shown by IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics shown by at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those are published thresholds with fees and preparation time attached. Which track a student eventually sits under depends on the certificate they present, so verify the position for a Diploma certificate on moe.gov.ae — the source we read states no IB points threshold, and this page publishes none.

02

Advanced Placement against the Diploma, compared on structure and cost

The comparison most American-curriculum families should be making is not Diploma against high-school diploma. It is Diploma against a high-school diploma with three or four Advanced Placement courses in it, because that is the genuinely competitive alternative and it is cheaper to support in almost every case.

AP is modular. A student picks courses one at a time, sits each as a standalone examination scored 1 to 5, and can add one in Grade 12 if a university target changes. There is no compulsory breadth beyond the school's own graduation requirements, no core, and in most schools no compulsory second language in Grades 11 and 12. Support is therefore bought per course and per examination, with a visible end point.

The Diploma is a single integrated award. The six subjects, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS are not separable: a student who abandons the Extended Essay does not get a Diploma with one component missing, they get certificates in individual subjects instead. That integration is exactly why universities value it, and it is also why support costs more — nine places to be weak rather than three or four, and three of them are components no school teaches in a weekly lesson.

On fees, AP examinations carry a published per-exam charge from the College Board that varies by region and changes year to year, so check the current figure on the College Board's own site rather than on any tutoring page including this one. Diploma registration and subject fees are handled through the school and vary by school. In both cases the examination fee is a smaller line than two years of support, which is why this page concentrates on the support arithmetic.

03

The transcript problem: credits, GPA and a programme that reports neither

A US high-school transcript is a running record. It lists courses, credits earned, letter grades, a weighted and unweighted GPA, sometimes class rank, and it exists from Grade 9 onwards. A Diploma reports seven numbers at the end of two years: six subject grades from 1 to 7 and the core contribution. Between those two reporting cultures sits a practical problem that families discover when they apply to university or to the equivalency authority.

The first part of the problem is interim evidence. A student who moves into DP1 in Grade 11 has a transcript covering Grades 9 and 10 and then a two-year gap in which no external grade exists. Schools fill the gap with predicted grades and internal reports, which are not the same currency. Any application made during DP1 or early DP2 is made on a transcript plus predictions, and families should ask the school early exactly what it will issue and when.

The second part is the credit question. A student moving into a Diploma school mid-stream may have earned credits in courses with no Diploma equivalent, and may be short of credits the Diploma school requires for its own graduation certificate. Some UAE schools award both a Diploma and a high-school diploma; some do not. This is a question for the registrar on the day a place is offered, not for the week before graduation.

The third is the mandatory UAE subjects, which sit outside both reporting systems and inside the timetable. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises at least 25 minutes for any mandatory-subject lesson. Those periods occupy the day whichever route a family chooses.

What the move costs a UAE household, with the lines nobody mentions

The fee line is unusually predictable this year. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family moving school to reach a Diploma place, the published fee is the fee for the year ahead, which makes a like-for-like comparison with the current school honest for once.

Capacity is rising at the same time. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools — four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate — creating 16,846 new places, after six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. A family being told a Diploma seat is scarce should weigh that against the published expansion before paying a non-refundable deposit.

The support line is the one families underestimate, and the figures below are what named providers publish rather than what IB Gram charges. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IB from AED 200; TutorChase lists AED 270; BartyED lists AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above, with monthly estimates for a weekly hour running AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work.

The lines unique to this track are the tests. SAT or English-proficiency preparation towards the MoE thresholds, and any AP examinations a student has already paid for and may not now sit, are real costs that a comparison between the two routes should include. The published MoE requirements for the American track are IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, plus at least 450 in SAT Math. Those are threshold scores, which means the preparation has a defined end rather than an open-ended one — a useful thing to insist on when buying test support.

Grade 10 to DP1, subject by subject

The subject-level gap in this transition has an unusual shape. American-curriculum students often arrive with wider coverage than a Diploma Standard Level requires and less depth per topic than Higher Level expects, because US courses move through more material at a shallower cut. That means the diagnosis cannot be done by comparing syllabus contents lists; it has to be done by setting Diploma-level questions and marking them.

Three gaps recur. The first is technology dependence in mathematics: a student who has always had a graphing calculator available loses manipulation marks on the paper that restricts it, which is a drill problem solvable in a term. The second is the internal assessment in the sciences, which is an open-ended individual investigation assessed against criteria rather than a lab report, and which needs supervision rather than teaching. The third is command terms, which have fixed meanings across every Diploma subject and which a US-curriculum student has never had to treat as a technical vocabulary.

What transfers well is worth stating too. Citation and academic-integrity practice from US schools is usually strong, which makes the Extended Essay less intimidating than it is for arrivals from systems with no research-writing tradition. Presentation and oral confidence transfer, which helps in the individual oral. And experience of project-based assessment means an internal assessment is a familiar genre, even if the criteria are not.

The table maps the common starting points onto their Diploma destinations with the cheapest intervention point named, because timing is most of what determines the cost of this move.

From assignments to a single examination: changing a study habit on purpose

  • Assignment-driven study produces nothing in the long gaps a Diploma contains
  • Retrieval practice on a fixed schedule is the replacement habit, and it is unintuitive
  • Internal assessments need self-imposed intermediate deadlines, so a supervisor imposes them
  • Both interventions are cheap in DP1 and expensive to substitute for in DP2
  • The student who always tested well sometimes improves on this route; the diligent one dips first

The habit change is the real work of this transition and it is rarely addressed directly, because it does not look like a subject. A student whose grade has always been built from submitted work studies in response to deadlines: there is a thing due, so there is work to do. A Diploma student has long stretches with nothing due and an examination two terms away, and the study habit that worked for twelve years produces nothing in that gap.

What replaces it is retrieval practice on a schedule the student does not negotiate with. Short, frequent, self-tested recall across everything covered so far, rather than re-reading before a unit test. This is well-established as a study method and it is also deeply unintuitive for a student who has been rewarded for polished submissions. Teaching it explicitly in the first term of DP1 is the single highest-value non-subject intervention available.

The second half of the habit change concerns the internal assessments, which pull in the opposite direction: they are long-horizon independent projects with soft internal deadlines that the student has to self-impose. Students who are excellent at submitting assignments on time can be poor at this, because nobody is setting the intermediate dates. A supervisor's main job in DP1 is to impose those dates and hold them.

Both halves are cheaper to teach early. A student who builds a retrieval routine in September of DP1 and has internal assessment milestones imposed by December needs far less subject tutoring in DP2 than one who arrives in April having done neither. That is the most reliable way to reduce the total cost of this transition, and it is a scheduling intervention rather than an expensive one.

07

Online one-to-one against a tutor in the room for this particular move

American-curriculum families in the UAE often expect in-home tutoring because it is the visible local norm, and the question deserves a straight answer rather than a redirect. In-home tutoring is widely available across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It costs more per hour because travel sits inside the rate — Bestimate's Dubai 2026 figures put in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, with independent tutors quoting up to AED 500 — and the available pool is whoever will drive to your community at the hour you want.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video. For this transition the argument is specific: the useful tutor is one who can read a US transcript and a Diploma subject guide in the same conversation, and who knows where Honors Precalculus leaves a student relative to Maths AA. That is a narrow specialism, and searching for it by driving distance is how families end up with a competent tutor of the wrong system.

Scheduling is the second argument. Diploma deadlines cluster, and the weeks when a student needs an extra session are exactly the weeks when nobody has time to receive a visitor. An online slot can move by half an hour, split into two shorter sessions, or shift to a post-Iftar time through Ramadan without renegotiating anyone's route.

The third is that American-curriculum families move often. A relationship built over video survives a transfer from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, or out of the UAE to another posting, which an in-home arrangement does not. For a student mid-Diploma, continuity of supervisor across a relocation is worth more than almost anything else money can buy.

Academic honesty across two traditions, and where they differ

  • US citation habits transfer well and are a real head start on the Extended Essay
  • The Diploma's rules cover assistance and collaboration, not only citation
  • A tutor may scope, explain criteria, model elsewhere and review a draft the student wrote
  • Editing to completion and model essays on the student's own title are malpractice in softer wording
  • Consequences fall on the student, which is why the boundary is stated before the first session

American-curriculum students usually arrive with better citation habits than students from most other systems: plagiarism policies, citation styles and originality checking are standard in US schools. That is a genuine advantage in a Diploma, where the Extended Essay and every internal assessment carry an authenticity requirement. It also creates a blind spot, because the Diploma's academic-honesty rules cover more than citation.

The difference that matters is collaboration and assistance. In many US courses, study groups, peer editing and tutor help with revision are normal and permitted. Under IB rules, the assessed work must be the student's own, and what a supervisor or tutor may contribute is bounded: teaching the skill, explaining the criteria, discussing a proposed question, modelling an approach on a different topic, and giving feedback on a draft the student has written. Rewriting a paragraph, editing a draft to completion or supplying a model essay on the student's own title crosses the line even where the student's ideas are underneath it.

The consequence is asymmetric and worth stating plainly. Malpractice falls on the student, not on whoever helped, and it can cost a Diploma. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; a family comparing providers should read that as information about the seller. Softer versions of the same offer — editing to completion, a written model on your child's own title — carry the same risk in friendlier packaging.

On materials, the same principle holds. We reference and link official subject guides, specimen papers and assessment documents rather than reproducing them, because the official copy is both the lawful one and the current one. And we do not describe tutors as examiners where current examiner status cannot be evidenced, nor use any such status to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because it provides none.

Making the decision, and what we will tell you not to buy

  • Transcript, timetabled six-subject grid, and published university prerequisites — in that order
  • Budget order: shared adjustment block, forced subject, core scoping, then one Higher Level
  • Cap test preparation at the published threshold rather than chasing a maximum
  • Never pay for documents the board or the College Board publishes free
  • A free trial lesson and a written view precede any quote

The decidable version of this question needs three documents on a table: the transcript with its GPA and credits, the six Diploma subjects as the school would actually timetable them, and the list of university destinations with their published prerequisites. Most families find the answer becomes obvious once those three are side by side, and that the thing they were really worried about was the word Diploma rather than any specific consequence.

If the Diploma is the choice, the support budget should go in a specific order. First, one shared adjustment block on criteria, command terms and study habit, worked across subjects rather than bought in each. Second, the forced subject — the Group 2 language or the Group 6 elective. Third, core scoping: one session on the Extended Essay question before research begins and one on Theory of Knowledge structure before the first draft. Only then weekly subject support, and only in the single hardest Higher Level.

There are purchases we will advise against. Three or four weekly subjects bought in response to a first DP1 report, because that report usually measures one shared problem. Open-ended test preparation past a published threshold, when the MoE requirement is a score of 450 or a TOEFL iBT 61 rather than a maximum. Paying for board or College Board documents that are free from the source. And anything priced on an outcome promise, a self-asserted rating or an unevidenced examiner claim.

What happens next is straightforward: a free trial lesson with the specialist who would actually teach the subject, no card details, no commitment, followed by a written view on what the two years need and what they do not. If a scarce combination has no match available — a Group 6 subject with portfolio supervision, or a specific Group 2 language in an early-evening Gulf slot — we say so with an honest timeframe rather than offering an adjacent specialism.

Where we tutor

Where American-curriculum and Diploma schools sit, emirate by emirate

The geography of this transition is specific: US-curriculum provision and Diploma provision overlap in some communities and not at all in others. These notes are about what that does to school choice and to session timing.

Dubai: Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Both systems are well represented along this corridor, and several families change route without changing neighbourhood. Traffic rather than distance sets the session time: a student collected at 3.15pm from this area is rarely settled before 5.30pm, so an online slot at 6.30pm or later holds week after week.

Dubai: Dubai Festival City, Garhoud and Mirdif

Established American-curriculum provision with Diploma schools reachable but on the other side of a long commute. Families who switch route here often keep the same school bus arrangement, which means a later evening slot and a plan that assumes the student is tired on two weeknights.

Dubai: Dubai Hills, Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Newer communities where both curricula have opened recently, so the choice between AP and the Diploma is often available inside one school group. That is the cheapest place to make this decision, because comparing routes does not require comparing admissions processes at the same time.

Abu Dhabi: Khalifa City, Al Raha and Al Bateen

Strong American-curriculum provision and a thinner Diploma map. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and its professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school — so the cheapest-looking source of help is unavailable by rule.

Abu Dhabi: Saadiyat Island and Yas Island

Both systems present, with distances that make a weekday in-person arrangement expensive in time for everyone involved. An online slot removes the travel question from a school night entirely, which matters most in DP1 when internal assessment deadlines start to land.

Sharjah

Regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods rather than only inspecting. American-curriculum schools are present and Diploma places are limited, so a number of families commute into Dubai for Grades 11 and 12.

Al Ain

Under ADEK, with a small school market and real distances between campuses. The practical consequence for this transition is that a subject the local Diploma school does not offer cannot be picked up elsewhere, so confirm the six-group grid before accepting a place rather than after.

Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah

Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education there; Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah sit under the federal Ministry of Education. Diploma provision is sparse and Higher Level specialist cover in the local tutoring market is sparser, which makes online matching the realistic route rather than a convenience.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

American-curriculum schools families move from

US-curriculum schools across Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Several offer Advanced Placement courses alongside the high-school diploma, and a few offer the Diploma in the same building, which is the simplest place to compare the two routes without also comparing two admissions processes.

  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Universal American School, Dubai
  • Collegiate American School, Dubai
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS American Academy, Abu Dhabi
  • American School of Creative Science, Al Layyah

Diploma Programme schools families move to

IB Diploma providers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, inspected by KHDA and ADEK respectively on their own published scales. Programme offerings change year to year, so confirm the six-group grid and the Higher Level options with the school before a place is accepted.

  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Uptown International School
  • Dubai International Academy, Emirates Hills
  • Raha International School, Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi

School names appear here solely as context for the UAE school ecosystem. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with IB Gram is implied, and curriculum offerings and inspection outcomes should be confirmed with the school and the relevant regulator.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the transcript and the proposed six-subject grid

The transcript with credits and GPA, the Honors and AP record, and the six Diploma subjects as the school would timetable them. Those three things let a specialist say which route is cheaper for your child specifically, which group will carry the weakest subject, and whether a mathematics prerequisite is about to become a problem.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with the matched specialist

One lesson with the tutor who would teach the subject, no card details taken and no commitment. The second purpose is diagnosis: Diploma-level questions set and marked, so the gap is measured rather than assumed. US course titles do not predict Diploma readiness reliably enough to skip this step.

  3. 03

One shared adjustment block before any subject tutoring

For most American-curriculum arrivals the first purchase should be a single block on criteria, command terms and study habit, worked across two or three subjects at once. It treats the shared problem once rather than three times, and it is routinely the difference between a DP1 that settles by February and one that does not.

  4. 04

Core and internal assessment dates into the plan at the start

Your child's school sets internal deadlines for each internal assessment, the Extended Essay milestones and the Theory of Knowledge drafts. Those dates go into the plan immediately, with intermediate milestones imposed, because long-horizon independent work is the specific thing an assignment-driven student has never had to self-schedule.

  5. 05

Test preparation quoted separately, and capped

Where the MoE American track applies, SAT or English-proficiency preparation is quoted as its own scope with the published threshold as the target: IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450, and SAT Math at least 450. It is kept out of Diploma subject time so neither displaces the other, and it stops when the threshold is met.

  6. 06

Reviewed each half term, with a stated end point

Every half term we ask whether a session is still the right purchase and say so when it is not. Sometimes the budget should move to a different subject, sometimes the match is wrong and the tutor should change, and sometimes the honest answer is to stop. A standing session nobody has questioned is a standing charge.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We read both systems, not one of them

The useful specialist for this move can hold a US transcript and a Diploma subject guide in the same conversation and knows where Honors Precalculus leaves a student relative to Maths AA. That is a narrow specialism and it is found by searching across a timezone rather than across a neighbourhood.

Threshold scores are treated as thresholds

The MoE American track asks for IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT reading and writing 450, plus SAT Math at least 450. Preparation is scoped to meet those and then stop. Open-ended test coaching past a published requirement is a cost with no corresponding benefit.

Every figure carries its source and its date

The AED bands here are what named providers and the Bestimate Dubai 2026 table published, read in October 2026, presented as the market rather than as our price. Where no sourced figure exists — AP fees, Diploma school fees, an IB equivalency threshold — this page points to the official source instead of inventing one.

Supervision held inside the IB's rules, stated up front

Internal assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge support means criteria, question scoping, modelling on another topic and feedback on the student's own draft. We do not author assessed work, and we explain that boundary before the first session rather than when a deadline is close.

Delivered online, said before you ask

UAE lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service. It matters more here than elsewhere, because this move depends on dual-system expertise rather than on proximity.

Independent, with no claimed accreditation

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform holding no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, the College Board, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, and operating no UAE premises. Schools are named as context only.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Why did my child's grades drop after moving from a GPA system to the Diploma?+

Because the behaviour that produced the GPA produces middling criterion marks in a system that asks for something else. A GPA is built continuously from assignments, quizzes and participation, and a weak week averages away. A Diploma grade comes from terminal examinations plus one internal assessment per subject, and nothing submitted in October appears in the result. The diligent, assignment-completing student is usually the one whose first reports dip, while the student who always tested well sometimes improves. It is a habit problem, and it is treated once rather than subject by subject.

Is the Diploma or Advanced Placement better value for a UAE family?+

AP is cheaper to support in almost every case, because it is modular: three or four courses chosen in genuine strengths, each a standalone examination, with no core and no forced sixth subject. The Diploma is one integrated award with six subjects plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, which is nine places to need help rather than three. The Diploma's value is the core itself, which is what universities credit it for. A student with an uneven profile and a clear single direction usually belongs on the AP route.

What does the UAE Ministry of Education require from an American-track student?+

English proficiency shown by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics shown by at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those are published thresholds rather than targets to exceed, so preparation should be capped once met. Which track applies depends on the certificate your child eventually presents, so verify the position for a Diploma certificate on moe.gov.ae — the source we read publishes no IB points figure, and we will not invent one.

Will my child's US transcript still count after switching to the Diploma?+

The transcript covering Grades 9 and 10 remains what it is, and then there is a two-year stretch with no external grade in it. Schools fill that gap with predicted grades and internal reports, which are a different currency from a GPA. Ask the Diploma school three things when the place is offered: whether it will issue a transcript covering the Diploma years, whether it converts Diploma grades to a GPA for US applications, and whether it also awards a high-school diploma and on what credit basis.

Which mathematics route should an American-curriculum student take in the Diploma?+

Applications and Interpretation is frequently the better fit, because modelling, data handling and technology-permitted assessment match how US courses already work. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and proof-oriented route expected by most engineering, physics and mathematics programmes, and a student used to having a graphing calculator in reach will lose manipulation marks on the restricted paper until that is drilled. Decide against the published prerequisite on each target programme's own admissions page, and have your child attempt marked questions from both courses.

How do I know whether the Diploma is the wrong choice for my child?+

Three signals. An uneven transcript with two clear strengths and one weak area, because the six-group grid will force the weak area back into the timetable. A dislike of extended independent writing, because the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are unavoidable and carry three of the 45 points. And no world-language study to build on, since a second language is compulsory for both years. Any one of those is manageable; all three together usually means three or four APs in strengths is the better and cheaper route.

What is the single most useful thing to buy in the first term of DP1?+

One shared block on criteria, command terms and study habit, worked across two or three subjects rather than purchased separately in each. The deficit an American-curriculum arrival has is one skill, not several content gaps: criteria read as guidance instead of as a mark scheme, command terms treated as ordinary English, and study driven by deadlines in a programme that has long stretches with nothing due. Treating that once in term one reliably reduces what DP2 costs, which is the opposite of what four weekly subjects does.

How does the science internal assessment differ from a US lab report?+

It is an open-ended individual investigation rather than a prescribed experiment written up. The student chooses the research question, designs the method, handles uncertainty properly, and is assessed against published criteria covering exploration, analysis, evaluation and communication. A US lab report is often marked on accuracy and presentation against a given procedure. The practical consequence is that the help needed is supervision — question scoping, intermediate deadlines, feedback on a draft — rather than subject teaching, and it is cheapest before any data is collected.

Can a tutor help with my child's Extended Essay if they have never written a research paper?+

Yes, and American-curriculum students usually start better placed than most because citation and originality practice is standard in US schools. The useful help is at the question: most Extended Essays fail because the question is too broad for 4,000 words or too narrow to sustain one, and no later help rescues a well-written essay answering an unanswerable question. A supervisor may discuss the question, explain the criteria, model an approach on a different topic and give feedback on the student's own draft, and may not author any part of it.

What does Diploma support cost per hour in the UAE market?+

As published in October 2026: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 for a qualified subject tutor online; TutorChase lists AED 270; BartyED lists AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above. Those are other providers' figures. IB Gram quotes per subject and per core component after a free trial lesson.

Do we have to change school to change curriculum?+

Not always, and checking is worth real money. Several UAE schools and school groups run both an American-curriculum programme and the Diploma, sometimes on the same campus, which means a family can compare routes without also comparing two admissions processes and two sets of fees. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, within 16,846 new places, so the supply position is better than it was. Ask your current school's registrar before applying elsewhere.

Does a tutor come to our villa in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. For this move it is the stronger arrangement anyway, because the useful tutor is one who can read a US transcript and a Diploma subject guide in the same conversation, and that is a narrow specialism rather than a local one. Market in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced inside them.

How many Higher Levels should a student from a US system take?+

Three is the standard requirement and three chosen by ambition rather than by need is the commonest expensive mistake. Higher Level sits near A Level depth, costs more per taught hour to support — published bands move from AED 150 to 250 for a qualified Standard Level tutor to AED 200 to 450 or above for a Higher Level specialist — and absorbs evenings. Choose the three that the intended programmes actually require, and let the other groups sit at Standard Level even where a student could manage more.

Will the mandatory UAE subjects affect a Diploma timetable?+

They occupy real timetable space whichever curriculum a Dubai school is licensed for. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided weekly totals are met, and KHDA advises at least 25 minutes for any mandatory-subject lesson. Factor those periods into the study time a six-subject grid leaves.

Is it too late to switch to the Diploma in Grade 11?+

DP1 is Grade 11, so entering at the start of Grade 11 is the normal point rather than a late one. Entering partway through DP1 is possible at some schools and hard, because internal assessment timelines and the core have already started. Entering in Grade 12 is not realistic for a full Diploma. If the family's position is that the US route is wrong but the timing has passed, the practical alternatives are individual Diploma course certificates, an AP route in the existing school, or deferring the change to university-level choices.

What should I ask before paying anyone for this transition?+

Five questions. Can you read both a US transcript and a Diploma subject guide, and what will you set my child to measure the gap? Is internal assessment supervision inside the quote, and exactly what will you do with a draft? How many sessions does this cover, over what period, towards which deadline? Is any examiner claim evidenced, and what do you say it gives access to — the correct answer is nothing about marking or boundaries. And will you tell me when to stop paying?

Three documents, then a decision

If your family is weighing a move from an American-curriculum school to the IB Diploma in the UAE, put three things on the table first: the transcript with its credits and GPA, the six Diploma subjects as the school would actually timetable them, and the published prerequisites for the universities your child is aiming at. Send those over and a free trial lesson with the matched specialist follows, with no card details and no commitment, delivered live online wherever in the Emirates you are. You will get a written view of what the two years need, in what order, and what not to buy at all.
