IGCSE Science Tutor in The Sustainable City

An IGCSE science tutor in The Sustainable City is usually wanted because three subjects have started arriving at once and the calendar has become the problem. This page is written from that angle: what triple and double award actually commit a student to, how the science year runs backwards from the June series, when practical papers and entry decisions land, and what each remaining term has to deliver. Lessons are one-to-one and live online into this community off Al Qudra Road.

  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, separate sciences and the award routes
  • Practical skills papers prepared from the boards' own past questions
  • Three-subject workload planned by term rather than by subject
  • Free trial lesson on the weakest subject, with the tutor who continues

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

Three subjects, one calendar, and a workload nobody planned

Science is the part of an IGCSE timetable that goes wrong quietly. A student taking three separate sciences is taking three full subjects with three sets of content, three practical skills components and three sets of papers, and in Dubai schools that is normal rather than exceptional. The trouble is that it is usually treated as one block on a timetable and one line on a report, so a family discovers in the fifth term that one of the three has been drifting since Year 10 while the other two were fine.

That makes the calendar the right organising idea for this page. The question is not whether your child needs science tutoring. It is which of the three subjects needs it, in which term, and what the remaining weeks can realistically deliver in each. A tutor engaged in the first term of Year 10 is building; one engaged in the fifth term is converting knowledge into marks. Both are legitimate purchases and they are not the same purchase.

Before anything else, two facts set the outer edges. Cambridge International examines IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and its February and March series is offered to India only, so it is not a route for a candidate sitting in Dubai. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. Entry decisions, including which award route and which tier, close months before the papers, and those are the deadlines that actually constrain what tutoring can change.

The second thing to establish is which route your child is on. Three separate sciences, a coordinated or combined double award, and single-award arrangements are different qualifications with different paper counts and different grade outcomes, and students on a double award are sometimes told they are doing triple. The school's examinations officer can confirm the syllabus codes, and it is worth asking before booking anything, because the revision and the past papers differ, and a term spent on the wrong set is a term nobody gets back.

Delivery is online and said plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Sustainable City. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with diagrams, calculations and graph work on a shared whiteboard and past-paper questions on screen. Home visits exist in our India operation only. For the science practical papers, which are written rather than laboratory-assessed in both boards' international specifications, the online format loses nothing at all. What it gains is the two car journeys a visit would consume, and a tutor chosen for the syllabus code your child sits rather than for the distance between their home and Al Qudra Road at five in the afternoon.

At a glance

  • Three separate sciences are three subjects, not one timetable block
  • Cambridge examines in June and November; the March series is India-only
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November
  • Award route and tier are entry decisions with deadlines months in advance
  • Delivery is live one-to-one video; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science at this stage breaks into three stages with different jobs. The expensive mistake is buying the final-term version of the work in the first term, or the reverse.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before the course

Nothing external is assessed, so the gaps that matter stay invisible. The ones that cost marks later are specific: rearranging a formula, handling units and prefixes, reading a graph axis properly, and writing an explanation that gives a reason rather than a description. All four are cheap to fix at this stage and expensive later.

Mid-phase arrivals are frequent across this belt as families move between communities and systems. A child joining a British-curriculum school in Year 9 from an American or CBSE sequence usually has two or three specific missing topics in science rather than a general weakness, and naming them before the IGCSE course begins is the cheapest intervention available.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, three subjects beginning at once

Content starts arriving in all three sciences simultaneously, which is the year in which one subject usually begins to drift. Internal examinations at the end of Year 10 inform tier and award-route decisions for Year 11. The behind-schedule signal is specific: a student who cannot do last term's work in one subject while coping in the other two.

This is when the triple-against-double award question becomes real in Dubai schools, and it is an entry decision rather than an opinion. A family hoping to keep three separate sciences should treat the end of Year 10 as the deadline for making that realistic, because afterwards the option closes administratively rather than academically.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, converting content into marks

One mock block, entries closing months ahead of the papers, predicted grades drawn from the mocks, then study leave and the series. In science, most of the available improvement in this year is in the practical skills papers and in explanation technique, both of which are learnable quickly and both of which are usually under-practised.

UAE candidates sit the June series, with November as the resit route. Pearson's published history gives the rhythm: June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. A November entry closes months before the papers, so the resit decision is made within weeks of results.

POSTAges 16+

Into A Level or IB sciences

Science grades act as entry thresholds for A Level or IB Higher Level sciences, and schools set their own requirements, usually in the top bands and sometimes per subject rather than overall. A student taking a double award should check early whether the intended post-16 route accepts it for the science they want to continue, because some do not.

For UAE university plans, Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects. Verify current rules on moe.gov.ae.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the content map across the three sciences and the award routes, with the specific place marks go missing in each. Naming a subject and a topic produces a far better first session than describing science as the problem.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Volume rather than difficulty is the obstacle, and terminology precision decides the band. Osmosis answers lose marks for omitting concentration gradient; genetics answers lose them for incomplete Punnett square notation; enzyme questions lose them for saying an enzyme is killed rather than denatured.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Moles and reacting-mass calculations are the single largest source of lost marks, followed by qualitative analysis answers written imprecisely. Students who learn the ionic equations as patterns rather than as memorised recipes handle unfamiliar questions considerably better.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Circuits, moments and equilibrium are where Extended and Higher tier candidates reliably drop marks. A large share of physics losses are mathematical rather than scientific: rearranging before substituting, prefixes, and reading a gradient from a graph that is not quite straight.

Coordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 double award and 0653 combined

Covers all three sciences in fewer papers, with reduced content depth per subject. Students on these routes often believe they are taking triple science, and revise from the wrong past papers as a result. Confirm the syllabus code before a single revision session happens.

Pearson Science Double Award

Pearson 4SD0

The Edexcel double-award route, examined across papers covering all three sciences. Content is narrower than the separate subjects but the question style still rewards precise explanation, and the practical skills content is examined on paper in the same way.

Practical skills assessment

All science specifications

In both boards' international specifications, practical skills are assessed on a written paper rather than in a laboratory. What is tested is reading apparatus diagrams, identifying independent and controlled variables, criticising a method, completing results tables and plotting graphs — and almost nobody practises it deliberately.

Graph and data work

All three sciences

Plotting, line of best fit, gradient and interpolation, plus judging whether a relationship is supported. It appears in all three subjects and in the practical paper, which makes it the highest-leverage single skill in the whole science timetable. It cannot be revised by rereading notes.

Explanation technique

All three sciences

Science mark schemes award a chain of reasoning. A student who describes what happens earns the description marks and loses the explanation ones, which over three subjects is a substantial loss. The fix is mechanical: underline the command word and name the mechanism before writing anything else.

The mathematics inside science

Chemistry and physics especially

Rearranging, ratio, percentage, standard form, prefixes and significant figures. A student losing marks here will look weak in two sciences at once, which is a useful diagnostic signal: if chemistry and physics are both drifting while biology is fine, the cause is usually arithmetic.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

First language and additional language

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These grades sit on the report beside the sciences and add to the week a Year 11 student already has.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three engagement shapes for science, chosen by term and by how many of the three subjects are actually in trouble. Assuming all three need help is the commonest and most expensive error.

One subject, weekly, through Year 10

The cheapest useful science tutoring available. One subject — usually the one drifting while the other two hold — taken weekly alongside the school's scheme of work, with the explanation and data-handling skills that transfer to the other two built deliberately along the way.

  • Same tutor and slot through the year in Gulf Standard Time
  • Transferable skills named explicitly: graphs, explanation, units
  • Award route and tier readiness reviewed before internal examinations
  • Free trial lesson on the subject that is actually drifting

A practical paper block

A short, specific engagement on the practical skills component, which in both boards' international specifications is examined on paper. It is the single most under-practised component in the science timetable and improves faster than any content work, because the question types repeat heavily across past series.

  • Variables, method criticism, tables and graphs practised from past questions
  • Apparatus diagrams read and interpreted every session
  • Works across all three sciences at once, since the skills transfer
  • Usually four to six sessions rather than a term-long commitment

A Year 11 countdown on one or two subjects

Built backwards from the mock block or the series, on the one or two subjects where the grade gap matters most for the intended post-16 route. Deliberately not all three, because a Year 11 student cannot complete between-session work for three tutored subjects alongside everything else.

  • Prioritised by which grade the post-16 route actually depends on
  • Timed past papers from the first session rather than content review
  • Explanation technique and command words drilled across subjects
  • An honest statement of what the remaining weeks can deliver

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

Which science route is your child actually on

This sounds like a trivial question and it is the most common source of wasted revision in science. Three separate sciences, a coordinated or combined double award, and single-subject arrangements are different qualifications with different paper counts, different content depth and different past papers. Students frequently describe themselves as doing triple science when the school has entered them for a double award, and then revise from separate-science past papers that cover material they were never taught.

The codes settle it. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610 biology, 0620 chemistry and 0625 physics; Coordinated Sciences double award is 0654 and Combined Science is 0653. The Pearson separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Science Double Award at 4SD0. Ask the examinations officer for the codes rather than the subject names, because the difference between 0654 and the three separate codes is a materially different revision programme with a different paper count behind it.

The route also has consequences after Year 11. Some post-16 science courses, in Dubai and abroad, prefer or require the separate sciences for progression to A Level or Higher Level study in that subject. A student on a double award aiming at Higher Level chemistry should check their own school's entry requirement early rather than discovering a constraint at the point of selection. The table below sets out what each route commits a student to, and it is worth reading with the school's confirmation of the codes in hand rather than from memory.

02

The science year counted backwards from the June series

Nobody in this market publishes a science calendar, which is a gap worth filling because science has milestones the other subjects do not. Work the list below upwards and the logic is clear: the series is fixed by the board, study leave by the school, the mock block sits a term earlier because predicted grades depend on it, and entry decisions — award route and tier — close before any of that. Those entry deadlines are the ones families most often meet by accident.

What makes science distinctive is the practical component and the sheer volume of content across three subjects. There is no coursework deadline in the international specifications to force early work, which sounds like a relief and is actually the problem: nothing in the first three terms creates urgency, so drift in one subject goes unnoticed. The internal Year 10 examinations are the only real checkpoint, which is why they deserve more attention than schools' reporting cycles usually give them.

The practical consequence for a family here is a simple rule. Use the Year 10 internal results to decide which of the three sciences needs a weekly slot, then protect that slot through Year 11 rather than spreading hours across all three in the final terms. Families who do the reverse end up with three partially supported subjects and no completed between-session work in any of them, at three times the monthly cost. The table below is the sequence, and the final column is what should already be finished by each point rather than what the school will be doing.

03

The practical paper almost nobody prepares for

In both boards' international science specifications, practical skills are assessed on a written paper rather than through laboratory assessment. That is good news for an online tutor and, more importantly, it means a component worth a meaningful share of each science grade can be prepared from past questions. It is also the component students practise least, because it does not look like revision: there is nothing to re-read and no notes to highlight.

What the paper actually tests is narrow and repetitive, which is exactly why it rewards practice. Students are asked to identify independent, dependent and controlled variables; read and interpret apparatus diagrams; criticise a given method and suggest improvements; complete and read results tables; plot graphs and draw lines of best fit; and comment on reliability and anomalies. The same question shapes recur across series, and a student who has worked twenty of them recognises every one.

The leverage here is that the skills transfer across all three sciences at once. A student who learns to spot the controlled variable in a biology method does the same job in chemistry and physics. That makes a four to six session practical block the best value available in a triple-science timetable, because one short engagement raises marks in three subjects. It is also the clearest example of a component where online delivery costs nothing whatsoever, because every one of these skills is exercised on a page rather than at a bench.

Three sciences, and which one to tutor

The instinct when science marks fall is to tutor science, and in a triple timetable that means three subjects and three hours a week. For a Year 11 student carrying nine or ten subjects plus the mandatory UAE subjects, that is more than the between-session work can absorb, so all three engagements become half-used. The better approach is diagnostic: find out which of the three is actually the problem and whether the cause is shared.

There is a useful pattern that families can read themselves. If chemistry and physics are both drifting while biology holds, the cause is almost always arithmetic — rearranging, ratio, prefixes, significant figures — rather than three separate content problems. One engagement on the mathematics inside science fixes two subjects at once. If biology alone is weak, the cause is usually terminology precision and volume management, which is a different kind of work entirely.

If all three are weak, the cause is usually explanation technique or data handling, both of which are shared across the subjects, and both of which respond to a single engagement. That is why we ask for marked papers in all three before recommending anything: the pattern across them tells us whether this is one problem wearing three subject labels or three genuinely separate problems, and that determines whether a family needs one tutored hour a week or two. It is also free information: three photographs of marked papers, read side by side, settle the question before anybody is booked.

What eight weeks can do in the sciences

  • Weeks one and two diagnose with timed questions rather than teach
  • Practical skills, explanation technique and data handling come first
  • Content repair only on topics that recur heavily in past papers
  • Lost marks are classified by reason, not totalled as a percentage

Eight weeks is the usual commitment and in science it buys more than families expect, because the question types are strongly patterned. A student who understands the biology but writes imprecise explanations can move a grade in that time. A student who has not met a third of the chemistry specification cannot, and a tutor who implies otherwise is selling hope by the hour. The target has to be set honestly at the start.

The highest-yield eight-week plan in science is usually not content at all. It is the practical paper, explanation technique and data handling, in that order, because all three transfer across subjects and all three are under-practised. A student who adds those to existing content knowledge picks up marks in every paper they sit rather than in one topic. Content repair comes after, and only on the two or three topics that recur most heavily in past papers.

The first two weeks are diagnostic and look slower than parents expect: timed questions rather than teaching, with lost marks classified by reason rather than counted. The classification is the useful output. A student who learns that four of eight lost marks were explanation marks and two were units has a plan; a student who learns they scored sixty-one per cent has a feeling. That distinction is most of what separates a useful block from eight weeks of general revision, and it costs nothing except the discomfort of two weeks that look unproductive.

06

What science tutoring costs when there are three subjects

The arithmetic of three subjects is what makes science different from other tutoring decisions. Published Dubai rates put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150. At the mid-point of that band, three weekly hours is a monthly figure most households did not intend, and the between-session work for three subjects will not get done anyway, so the money buys less than one hour used properly.

The rest of the market, for context: budget online tutoring at AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65; specialists in IGCSE and A Level at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270; in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to AED 350; and one premium provider advertising AED 650 an hour. Monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits.

For IGCSE science the qualified online tier is usually the right purchase, and the right quantity is usually one hour rather than three. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour are AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Every figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it and was read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, for the specific subject and code.

KHDA, the mandatory subjects and what equivalency needs

Dubai private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. The market context: 227 private schools and 387,441 students in 2024-25 across 17 curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for the following academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package.

Two regulator facts touch a science timetable directly. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and combined classes prohibited; instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For a Year 11 student taking three sciences, those lessons are part of why there is less room in the week than a tutoring plan assumes. The second is that the emirate determines the regulator, with ADEK in Abu Dhabi, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

On equivalency, the sourced rule is specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement, which is wrong. Equivalency is a process your family manages with the Ministry rather than something a tutoring company performs, and nobody should suggest tutoring is required for it. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, Ministry, Cambridge or Pearson approval and no UAE office.

Fitting three sciences into a Dubai week

  • Monday to Friday working week with a half-day Friday in the UAE
  • Mandatory UAE subjects take time a tutoring plan often ignores
  • Weekend blocks carry practical and data work for commuting households
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

A Year 11 student taking three sciences has a timetable that is already full before any tutoring is added, and the UAE week does not help. Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday leaves Saturday and Sunday as the only full days, and those are also when families travel and host. Add the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons, plus sport, and the number of genuinely free evenings is usually one or two rather than four.

Where a family lives decides which of those evenings is usable. A student at school inside The Sustainable City is home by mid-afternoon and can take a short weekday session with time left for the work it sets. A student commuting to Motor City, Dubai Sports City or Al Barsha is not realistically free until 5.30pm, and in a sports-heavy household that evening is contested. For those families a weekend block carrying the practical and data work is usually the better structure.

On our side, slots are held in Gulf Standard Time, move after Iftar through Ramadan with the same tutor retained, and can pause during a school's own examination fortnight when adding sessions produces fatigue rather than marks. We do not rotate students between tutors to fill a diary. With three sciences in play, a tutor who already knows which of the three is the real problem is carrying information that takes several weeks to rebuild with somebody new, and that is worth more than a perfectly filled calendar.

Where we tutor

The communities around The Sustainable City

The Sustainable City sits on Al Qudra Road between Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand villa belt. Each entry notes what changes practically for a science session, which with three subjects is mostly about how many evenings exist.

The Sustainable City

A school inside the community means children attending it are home by mid-afternoon, so two short weekday sessions are feasible rather than theoretical. With three sciences running, the number of usable evenings is the binding constraint.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road with its own school provision and a largely locally employed population. Parents home earlier can sit in on a first session, which helps when the diagnosis is that one of three subjects is the problem.

Mudon

Outward school runs put the first realistic session at about 5.30pm, which with three sciences usually means prioritising one subject on a weekday and using a weekend block for practical paper work.

Remraam

Apartment-led and nearby, with frequent sibling bookings in different year groups. Online scheduling handles consecutive slots easily, and no travel charge attaches to the second one.

Arabian Ranches 3

A fast-growing Year 9 to Year 11 cohort where triple science demand has arrived recently. Requests from here concentrate on chemistry and physics rather than biology, which usually means the cause is arithmetic.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense British-curriculum cluster, with training taking several evenings a week. These households almost always need a single weekend session rather than two weekday slots that keep being moved.

Town Square and Mudon Al Ranim

Further along the Dubailand corridor. Mid-year moves between here and this community generate bridging work, because schools teach the science specifications in different topic orders.

Schools within the Al Qudra Road radius

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus codes, all of them

Whether your child is on three separate sciences, a coordinated or combined double award, or a mix, and the codes rather than the subject names. The examinations officer can confirm it in an email, and it decides which past papers the sessions use.

  2. 02

Send marked work from all three sciences

Not just the weakest one. The pattern across the three is what tells us whether this is one problem wearing three labels — arithmetic, explanation technique or data handling — or three genuinely separate content gaps. That distinction decides whether you need one tutored hour or two.

  3. 03

A free trial on the subject that is actually drifting

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question rather than a revision topic. It ends with the tutor stating which of the three subjects they would address and whether the cause is shared across them. If the match is wrong, we propose someone else.

  4. 04

A written plan naming subjects and components

You receive a plan naming the subject, the syllabus topics and the assessed components, including whether a practical paper block is part of it, plus the date everything counts back from. Named components mean the plan can be checked against what actually happens.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each note records which error classes appeared: content, explanation, data handling, arithmetic or command word. Over a month the classes thin out or they do not. If they do not, we change the method or the tutor rather than adding a second and third subject.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One hour, chosen by diagnosis

Three sciences does not mean three tutored hours. We read the pattern across marked papers in all three subjects first, because a shared cause such as arithmetic or explanation technique is fixable in one engagement that lifts three grades.

The practical paper taken seriously

It is examined on paper in both boards' international specifications, the question types repeat, and almost nobody practises it. Four to six sessions on it raise marks across all three sciences, which makes it the best value in the whole timetable.

Matched to the code, not the subject

Cambridge 0654 and the three separate codes are different qualifications with different past papers, and students frequently do not know which they sit. We confirm the code before the first session so revision uses the right material.

Honest about the three-subject workload

A Year 11 student with three sciences, the mandatory UAE subjects and a sport has one or two usable evenings. We plan around that rather than selling a session for every subject, because unused between-session work is wasted money.

Figures with publishers attached

Every AED band here names who published it and the month read. We publish no star ratings, satisfaction scores or improvement statistics, because a figure without a sample size, a date and a method is a marketing claim.

No approval claims, no UAE premises

IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, no ADEK or Ministry approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership and no office in the UAE. Regulators are named here to help you read your child's school, not to borrow standing we do not have.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

How do we find out whether our child is taking triple or double award science?+

Ask the examinations officer for the syllabus codes rather than the subject names. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610 biology, 0620 chemistry and 0625 physics; Coordinated Sciences double award is 0654 and Combined Science is 0653. Pearson separate sciences are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Science Double Award at 4SD0. This matters because students regularly believe they are taking triple science when the school has entered a double award, and then revise from separate-science past papers covering content they were never taught.

Which of the three sciences should we tutor if money is limited?+

Whichever the pattern points to, and the pattern is readable from marked papers in all three. If chemistry and physics are both drifting while biology holds, the cause is almost always arithmetic — rearranging, ratio, prefixes, significant figures — and one engagement fixes two subjects. If biology alone is weak, it is usually terminology precision. If all three are weak on long questions, it is explanation technique, which is also one engagement. Tutoring three subjects separately is usually paying three times for one underlying problem.

How is the practical component assessed for IGCSE science in Dubai?+

In both boards' international specifications it is assessed on a written paper rather than through laboratory assessment. The paper asks students to identify independent and controlled variables, read apparatus diagrams, criticise a given method and suggest improvements with their effects, complete results tables with correct units, plot graphs and draw lines of best fit, and comment on anomalies and reliability. Those question shapes repeat heavily across series, so it is the component that responds fastest to deliberate practice — and the one almost nobody practises.

Can an online tutor prepare a student for the science practical paper?+

Yes, completely, because the paper is written rather than laboratory-assessed in both international specifications. Everything it tests can be practised over a screen using the boards' own past questions: variables, apparatus diagrams, method criticism, tables, graphs and anomaly comments. Laboratory handling remains the school's responsibility and no online tutor should claim otherwise. The useful point is that the component the grade depends on is the written paper, and a four to six session block on it raises marks in all three sciences at once.

Does my child sit the February or March series for science?+

No. Cambridge International's February and March series is offered to India only, so it is not a route available to a candidate sitting in Dubai. UAE candidates sit the June series, with November as the resit and alternative route. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. If a revision plan, website or tutor refers your Dubai child to a March examination window, that plan was written for a different country and the dates in it should not be relied on.

Why does science drift without anyone noticing until Year 11?+

Because nothing creates urgency in the first three terms. The international specifications have no coursework deadline to force early work, science often appears as one block on a timetable and one line on a report, and three subjects are reported together often enough that a single weak subject hides behind two strong ones. The only genuine checkpoint is the internal Year 10 examinations, which is why they deserve more attention than schools' reporting cycles tend to give them, and why award route and tier decisions should be taken from them.

Is it worth starting science tutoring eight weeks before the series?+

Yes, with the right target. In eight weeks the achievable gains are the practical paper, explanation technique and data handling, all of which transfer across the three sciences and all of which are usually under-practised. Narrow content repair on heavily recurring topics is also possible. What is not achievable is covering a third of a specification that has never been met. We set that target in the first conversation rather than discovering it with you in the sixth week.

Do you cover both boards for all three sciences?+

Yes, matched to the code rather than the subject, because the specifications differ in paper structure and question style and their past papers are not interchangeable. Cambridge biology, chemistry and physics are 0610, 0620 and 0625; the Pearson equivalents are 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. We also cover the double award routes. Coverage is strongest in chemistry and physics, where demand in this belt concentrates, and good in biology. If we cannot match a specific code and tier quickly, we will say so.

My son does triple science and says he has no time. Is that true?+

Probably. A Year 11 student with three sciences, the KHDA-mandated Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons, and a sport usually has one or two genuinely free evenings a week, not four. That is the constraint a tutoring plan has to respect: a session whose between-session work never gets done produces almost nothing. The honest answer is one tutored hour chosen by diagnosis, with the work it sets actually completed, rather than three hours that displace the work entirely.

How much should we expect to pay for IGCSE science tutoring in Dubai?+

Published rates put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150, and Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour at AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65. In-home visits are AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. The important figure for a science family is the quantity rather than the rate: one hour used properly beats three hours half-used, at a third of the monthly cost.

Will a science tutor come to our villa if we pay extra?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE at any price, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Sustainable City or a neighbouring community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with diagrams, calculations and graph work on a shared whiteboard. Home tutoring is a service we operate in India only. For the science practical papers, which are written rather than laboratory-based in both international specifications, the online format loses nothing at all.

Does a double award limit what my daughter can study after Year 11?+

It can, and it is worth checking early rather than at the point of selection. Some post-16 science courses, in Dubai and abroad, prefer or require the separate sciences for progression to A Level or Higher Level study in that subject, and schools set their own entry requirements. If your daughter has a particular science in view for post-16 study, ask her school for its stated requirement in writing while there is still time to adjust the entry route rather than after the entry deadline has passed.

What is the fastest improvement available in a science grade?+

Explanation technique, in most cases. Science mark schemes award a chain of reasoning, and a student who writes an accurate description of what happens earns the description marks and loses the explanation ones. Across three subjects that is a large, repeated loss. The fix is mechanical — underline the command word, name the mechanism before anything else — and it shows up in the next marked paper. The practical paper runs it close, because its question types repeat so heavily.

Do you provide past papers and mark schemes for the sciences?+

No. Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright. We reference them, cite the official sources, and work from material your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. Any service advertising an unlimited paper bank invites a fair question about provenance. The school's own holdings are also the papers your child will be marked against, which makes them the better source in practice as well.

How soon will we see whether it is working?+

For explanation technique and data handling, about three to four weeks, because the change appears directly in the next marked paper. For arithmetic causes, four to eight weeks, since fluency improves through repetition. Genuine content gaps take one to three weeks per topic. Each session note records which error classes appeared rather than which topics were covered, so the trend is visible in the record. We publish no improvement statistics, because figures without a sample size, a date and a method are not evidence.

Codes, three marked papers, and the term you are in

The most useful first message names the syllabus codes, says which term your child is in, and attaches marked work from all three sciences rather than only the weakest. The pattern across the three is what tells us whether this is one problem wearing three subject labels or three separate ones, and that decides whether you need one tutored hour a week or two. Next is a free trial lesson on the subject that is actually drifting, with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan naming subjects, components and the date it counts back from. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE.
