IB Physics Tutor in The Sustainable City

An IB physics tutor in The Sustainable City should be able to say which of the five themes your child is losing marks in and whether the cause is the physics or the mathematics underneath it. This page is written at that level: what each theme contains, how uncertainty is treated, why the scientific investigation is a fifth of the grade, and which mathematical operations quietly cost physics marks. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with working and diagrams on a shared whiteboard.

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

Two different problems both look like a physics problem

When a Diploma physics grade stalls, there are usually two candidate explanations and they need different tutors. Either the student does not have the physics — the mechanism, the model, the conditions under which an equation applies — or the student has the physics and loses marks in the mathematics wrapped around it: rearranging before substituting, powers of ten, uncertainty, gradients from a graph that is not quite linear. Those are both fixable, and treating one as the other wastes a term.

The distinction is diagnosable in about two sessions, from a marked paper and a few questions attempted in front of a tutor. Students whose physics marks improve sharply after what looks like mathematics tutoring never had a physics problem; they had an arithmetic one that surfaced under time pressure. Conversely, a student fluent in the algebra who cannot say why a field is conservative has a physics problem that more practice questions will not touch.

The current Diploma physics course is organised into five themes, running from space, time and motion, through the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour and fields, to nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level extends several of them substantially. Assessment is two written papers, one of which includes a data-based section, plus the scientific investigation, which is 20% of the final grade at both levels. Syllabus structures are revised, so confirm the current arrangement with your child's subject teacher rather than taking it from any website.

That 20% changes the timing of everything. The investigation is designed, carried out and written by the student, to a school deadline that sits months before the examinations. A family that engages a physics tutor in the second term of the second Diploma year is too late to affect a fifth of the grade. In The Sustainable City, where most Diploma students attend the IB continuum school inside the community and share one subject teacher, that deadline tends to arrive for the whole cohort at once.

Delivery is online, stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor will arrive at an address in this community. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard for working, diagrams and graph sketches, and screen-shared past-paper questions. Household visits exist in our India operation only. For physics the loss is minimal, because what a tutor needs to see is the line of working where the student stopped being sure. The format also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which is why a session can run while a student is still able to concentrate on an uncertainty calculation, and why the tutor can be chosen for the level they teach rather than for the distance they are prepared to drive down Al Qudra Road at five in the afternoon.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics is taught here across three stages, and the preparation that makes Higher Level viable happens before the Diploma begins. These are the stages and what each one actually demands.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years sciences

Assessed on four criteria covering knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The inquiry and processing criteria are where the skills the Diploma investigation examines at 20% are first built, and they are the criteria capable students most often neglect in favour of content recall.

In a continuum school such as the one inside The Sustainable City, MYP science grades inform the Diploma level decision. A student aiming at Higher Level physics needs the processing and evaluating criterion marks rather than only the knowledge one, because that criterion is the direct ancestor of the investigation's data-analysis assessment.

DP-SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics at Standard Level

Covers all five themes at core depth, with two written papers and the scientific investigation at 20%. Most Standard Level students who underperform do so on explanation questions rather than calculations: they describe what happens accurately and never name the mechanism that makes it happen, which is what the command term explain requires.

Standard Level physics is a common choice for Dubai students heading towards medicine, architecture or economics who want a quantitative science without the Higher Level load. It is still a demanding course, and the data-based section of the written paper assumes graph and uncertainty skills many students have not practised deliberately.

DP-HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics at Higher Level

Extends several themes substantially, with fields and nuclear and quantum physics carrying the heaviest additional load. The mathematical demand rises sharply, which is why Higher Level physics and Higher Level Analysis and Approaches are so often taken together and why students taking Higher Level physics with Standard Level mathematics feel the strain by the second term.

Dubai families usually choose Higher Level physics with engineering, physical sciences or medicine in view. Published university requirements differ and are revised, so read the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist rather than relying on general advice, and check whether a minimum grade rather than just the subject is specified.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · The transition year

IGCSE or MYP science into Diploma physics

The step into Diploma physics is steep in two specific places: the mathematics becomes continuous rather than arithmetical, and explanations must name mechanisms rather than describe outcomes. A student who scored well at IGCSE by memorising standard answers finds the first term of the Diploma genuinely difficult, and that is usually a method problem rather than a capability one.

Families moving between communities in this belt frequently change schools and boards at once, so a student may arrive in the first Diploma year from a different science sequence with two or three unmet topics. A short bridging block in the first term is far cheaper than remediation in the examination year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the content map by theme, with the specific thing that costs marks in each. An enquiry that names a theme and a question type gets a better first session than one describing general difficulty.

Space, time and motion

HL and SL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, work and energy, and at Higher Level more demanding treatment including rotational and relativistic ideas depending on the current syllabus. Marks are lost on sign conventions in momentum questions and on energy arguments that omit the system boundary being considered.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, the gas laws, and the kinetic model. The recurring failure is mixing temperature and internal energy in explanations, and using the ideal gas relationship without checking which quantities are being held constant in the situation described.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Oscillations, wave models, superposition, standing waves and, at Higher Level, further treatment of interference and diffraction. Students lose marks drawing diagrams that are approximately right: a standing wave with the wrong number of nodes earns nothing even when the explanation is correct.

Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, circuits, and electromagnetic induction, with substantial Higher Level extension. Circuit questions are where Standard Level students most often go wrong, usually by treating a potential divider as a series of independent components.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactivity, nuclear reactions, and quantum ideas including the photoelectric effect, with Higher Level going considerably further. Explanation questions here reward precise language about photons and energy levels, and lose marks for descriptions that could equally apply to a wave model.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Twenty per cent of the grade, designed and written by the student and marked against published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The most common cause of a weak mark is a research question too broad to be answered by the data the student can realistically collect.

Data analysis and the data-based paper section

HL and SL

Graph work, gradients, intercepts, uncertainty bars and judging whether a relationship is linear. This section rewards students who have practised reading data they have not seen before, and it is the part of the paper most often left unrehearsed because it cannot be revised by rereading notes.

Uncertainty and error treatment

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and significant figures that reflect the precision of the measurement. It is examined throughout rather than as a topic, which is exactly why students never revise it and why it costs marks in every paper.

The mathematics inside physics

HL and SL

Rearranging before substituting, powers of ten, logarithms where the syllabus requires them, trigonometry in resolving vectors, and gradients from curved graphs. A substantial share of lost physics marks are mathematical, which is a diagnosable distinction rather than a guess.

Chemistry and mathematics alongside physics

HL and SL

Students taking physics usually take at least one of these too, and the overlap is real: energetics calculations and uncertainty treatment transfer directly. Sequencing tutoring across two sciences in the same term is usually a mistake, and the reason is set out later on this page.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes for physics tuition, matched to whether the obstacle is the mathematics, the physics or the investigation. These are genuinely different jobs and the sessions do not look alike.

Mathematics-inside-physics work

For students whose physics understanding is sound and whose marks are not. Sessions drill the operations that cost physics marks: rearranging before substituting, powers of ten, resolving vectors, reading gradients from graphs, and propagating uncertainty. It looks like mathematics tutoring and it raises a physics grade, which surprises families every time.

  • Operations drilled in physics contexts, not abstract exercises
  • Uncertainty propagation practised on the student's own data
  • Graph work from unseen data sets every session
  • Free trial diagnosing whether this is the real problem

Theme-by-theme physics teaching

For genuine content gaps, worked theme by theme with the syllabus named in each session note. Explanation questions are practised explicitly, because the difference between describing an effect and naming its mechanism is the difference between half marks and full marks on a large share of the paper.

  • Sessions named by syllabus theme rather than by topic feel
  • Explanation questions practised against the command term
  • Unfamiliar questions used to confirm the understanding transferred
  • Short written note of what is now secure after each session

Investigation support, early and bounded

Sessions on the scientific investigation, working only on the student's own design and writing. The highest-value work is at the start, testing whether the research question can be answered by data the student can actually collect, which is what decides most of the mark months before anything is written up.

  • Research question feasibility tested before data collection
  • Uncertainty and processing taught on the student's own measurements
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published criteria
  • No design chosen, no data supplied, no text written by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

The five themes and where each one loses marks

Physics is a subject where the examiner's requirements are unusually explicit, and the losses cluster in predictable places within each theme. Most of them are not about missing knowledge. They are about explanations that stop one step short of the mechanism, diagrams drawn approximately, and equations applied outside the conditions under which they hold. A tutor who can name those per theme is doing something a general science tutor cannot.

The pattern worth understanding is the explanation question. A six-mark explanation in physics is marked for a chain of reasoning, and a student who writes an accurate description of the phenomenon earns the description marks only. Naming the mechanism — the force, the field, the energy transfer, the photon interaction — is what earns the remaining marks. Students find this frustrating because their answer is not wrong; it is incomplete in a way that feels arbitrary until they see a mark scheme broken down line by line against what they actually wrote.

The second pattern is conditional equation use. Physics equations hold under stated conditions: constant acceleration, ideal gas behaviour, negligible resistance, small-angle approximation. A student who applies one outside its conditions produces a confident wrong answer and often loses the marks for the reasoning as well. The table below sets this out theme by theme, so a parent can check whether sessions are addressing the actual failure or simply covering content again. If several weeks pass without any of these appearing in a session note, that is a fair question to put to the tutor.

THE FIVE THEMES, AND THE RECURRING LOSS IN EACH

02

Uncertainty: examined everywhere, revised nowhere

Uncertainty treatment is assessed throughout Diploma physics — in the data-based paper section, in the investigation, and inside ordinary calculation questions where significant figures must reflect the precision of the measurement. It is also the topic students revise least, because it is not a theme and never appears as a heading in a revision guide. The result is a steady, invisible leak of marks across every paper a student sits, and because it is spread thinly it rarely shows up as a topic anyone decides to address.

The specific failures are consistent. Absolute and percentage uncertainty are confused. Uncertainties are not propagated through multi-step calculations, so a final answer carries a precision the measurements cannot support. Significant figures are copied from a calculator display. In graph work, uncertainty bars are drawn but never used to assess whether a proposed relationship is actually supported, which is usually the question being asked.

The fix is mechanical and fast, which is what makes it good value. Three or four sessions on uncertainty, worked on the student's own investigation data rather than on textbook examples, usually eliminates the leak. It also improves the investigation mark directly, because data analysis and evaluation are two of the assessed areas. This is the clearest example in the subject of a small, specific intervention producing marks across several components at once. It is also work a parent can verify is happening, because an uncertainty session leaves visible traces in the student's own processed data rather than in a general sense of having revised.

UNCERTAINTY ERRORS AND WHAT EACH ONE COSTS
ErrorWhere it appearsWhy it costs marksHow quickly it is fixed

03

The mathematics that quietly costs physics marks

A notable share of lost physics marks are not physics losses at all. The commonest profile we see in this community is a student who understands the mechanism, selects the right equation, and then loses the mark rearranging it, mishandling a power of ten, or resolving a vector with the wrong trigonometric ratio. Under timed conditions those slips multiply, and the student concludes they are bad at physics when they are in fact slow at algebra.

This matters for how a family spends money. A student in this situation does not need more physics teaching; they need three or four weeks of dense manipulation practice in physics contexts. That is cheaper, faster and more measurable than a term of content review. It is also why we ask for a marked paper before the first session: the distinction between a physics gap and a mathematics gap is visible in the working, and it is not visible in a conversation.

Higher Level students taking Standard Level mathematics are the group most at risk. The Higher Level physics extensions in fields and quantum physics assume comfort with manipulation that Standard Level mathematics does not drill to the same depth. That combination is workable, and it is the single most common reason a capable Higher Level physics student stalls in the second term. Identifying it early turns it into a scheduling decision rather than a crisis, and it is one of the first things a diagnostic session is designed to establish.

MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS THAT COST PHYSICS MARKS

04

The scientific investigation is a fifth of the grade

  • Feasibility of the research question is the highest-value early session
  • Uncertainty and processing work raises both paper and investigation marks
  • No design, no data, no text ever supplied by a tutor
  • Feedback is recorded, so a school can see exactly what support was given

Twenty per cent of a Diploma physics grade comes from the student's own investigation, marked against published criteria covering research design, data collection and processing, analysis and conclusion, and evaluation. It is submitted to a school deadline months before the examinations. That single fact should reorder a family's thinking about when physics tutoring is worth buying, and it almost never does, because nobody tells parents until the deadline is close.

The dominant cause of a weak mark is scope. A research question that cannot be answered by the data a school laboratory and a sixteen-year-old can realistically produce generates thin analysis, however good the physics behind it. Testing feasibility is therefore the highest-value session in the whole engagement, and it happens before any data is collected. Students who get this stage right frequently need very little help afterwards.

The boundary on what a tutor may do is strict and we state it rather than leaving it vague. A tutor may teach the underlying physics, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a method is reproducible, press on whether a conclusion follows from the data, teach uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not design the investigation, collect or supply data, write or rewrite any part of the report, or provide a model to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments; that is academic misconduct and the student carries the consequence.

05

Higher Level or Standard Level physics, and the mathematics pairing

The level decision in physics is unusually consequential because of its interaction with mathematics. Higher Level physics extends several themes substantially, with fields and nuclear and quantum physics carrying most of the additional load, and the mathematical demand rises with them. A student taking Higher Level physics alongside Higher Level Analysis and Approaches has the tools the course assumes. A student pairing it with Standard Level mathematics is doing something harder than the syllabus documents suggest.

That is not an argument against the pairing, which many students manage well. It is an argument for noticing it in the first term rather than the fourth. The signal is specific: a student who understands the lesson and cannot complete the problem set at speed is hitting a mathematical ceiling, not a physics one. Three or four weeks of manipulation work at that point usually resolves it, while the same situation discovered a year later is a much larger repair.

On university requirements, the honest position is that it varies. Engineering and physical science degrees commonly expect Higher Level physics, sometimes with a minimum grade; medicine varies substantially by country; and many quantitative economics or computer science routes care more about the mathematics. Published requirements change, so read the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist early enough to act, rather than relying on general guidance including ours. Whether Higher Level physics can be timetabled alongside Higher Level mathematics at your child's school is also worth asking early, because in smaller cohorts it occasionally cannot.

LEVEL AND MATHEMATICS PAIRING, PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCES

What physics tutoring costs, and the three-science trap

Published Dubai market rates put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, and in-home visits AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. Those figures belong to the companies and rate guides that published them, read in October 2026.

The trap in a science-heavy Diploma is arithmetic rather than pedagogical. A student taking three sciences has three investigations and three sets of papers, and a family that engages a tutor per subject arrives at three hours a week plus mathematics. At the mid-market online rate, that is a monthly figure well above what most households intend to spend, and more importantly it is more between-session work than a Diploma student carrying six subjects and the core can complete. The result is three half-used engagements.

The better structure is sequencing. Identify which subject's investigation deadline falls first and which subject's marks are furthest from target, address those, and rotate. One subject at a time, properly used, outperforms three subjects partially used, and it costs a third as much in any given month. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, which makes the arithmetic of restraint fairly clear.

What a tutor may not do, and what the regulators actually govern

  • No investigation designed, no data supplied, no report text written
  • Past papers and mark schemes referenced, never hosted or distributed
  • No examiner claims without current, evidenced examiner status
  • No regulator approval, accreditation or partnership claimed anywhere

The academic honesty line in physics is the same as elsewhere and worth repeating because the investigation makes it tempting. A tutor teaches, explains criteria, questions method and reasoning, and comments on the student's own writing. A tutor does not design investigations, supply data, write or redraft reports, or provide specimens to adapt. One operation in this market sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750; buying one is misconduct under IB rules and the candidate carries the consequence, not the seller.

On materials, IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference and cite them and work from what the school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank invites a fair question about provenance. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, a claim made frequently in this market and rarely supported.

On regulators, the position is narrow. Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education covers Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, approval or partnership from any of them, nor from the IB, and has no UAE office. An individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

08

When a physics session should actually happen

  • Manipulation and uncertainty work degrade sharply with fatigue
  • 3.30pm starts are available for students at school inside the community
  • Investigation work and whole papers suit a weekend block
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Physics punishes fatigue more than most subjects, because a tired student makes manipulation errors and uncertainty slips that teach the wrong lesson when they are reviewed. Session timing is therefore a real variable. A student at school inside The Sustainable City can start at 3.30pm and still think clearly; one travelling back from Motor City or Al Barsha is not realistically available until 5.30pm, and the value of an hour drops noticeably after seven in the evening.

The UAE week pushes certain work to the weekend. Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday leaves Saturday and Sunday as the only full days, which is why investigation work and whole-paper practice usually belong there: both need an uninterrupted block rather than a squeezed hour. During Ramadan, school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar, where a physics session is frequently more productive than any afternoon slot in that month.

Our side is straightforward. Slots are held in Gulf Standard Time, move after Iftar through Ramadan with the same tutor, and can pause during a school's own examination fortnight where adding sessions produces fatigue rather than marks. We do not rotate students between tutors to fill a diary. In physics the tutor's accumulated knowledge of whether a given student's errors are mathematical or conceptual is most of the value, and rebuilding it with somebody new takes several weeks. That is why we would rather hold one protected slot across a whole term than fill a diary with sessions that keep being moved.

Where we tutor

Communities this part of Dubai draws its physics students from

The Sustainable City sits on Al Qudra Road between Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand villa belt. Each entry notes what changes for a physics session specifically, which is mostly about when a student can think clearly.

The Sustainable City

A school inside the community means students attending it are home by mid-afternoon, so a 3.30pm start is available. For physics that matters, because uncertainty and graph work demand concentration that an 8pm session does not get.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road with its own school provision. Parents working locally are more often able to attend a first session, which helps when the diagnosis is that the problem is mathematical rather than scientific.

Mudon

Outward school runs put the first realistic session at about 5.30pm. For Higher Level physics a weekend two-hour block is frequently more productive than two tired weekday hours during the week.

Remraam

Apartment-led and nearby, with frequent requests for siblings in different year groups on the same evening. Online delivery makes consecutive slots straightforward with no travel charge attached.

Arabian Ranches 3

A young secondary cohort where Diploma science demand has arrived recently. The transition from IGCSE physics into the first Diploma year is the request we see most often from these households.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense school cluster, with training commitments taking several evenings. A single weekend session suits investigation work better than fragmented weekday slots.

Dubai Hills Estate and DAMAC Hills

Up the corridor, with the most competitive Diploma subject-choice conversations in this part of Dubai. Higher Level physics paired with Higher Level mathematics is the most requested combination from these communities.

School ecosystem

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked paper

Higher or Standard Level, which mathematics course your child takes alongside it, and a photograph of recently marked work. That combination usually tells us whether the problem is physics or the mathematics inside it, which decides which tutor we approach first.

  2. 02

    Say where the investigation stands

Unstarted, question chosen, data collected or written up. The answer changes the priority order completely, because the investigation is 20% of the grade and its deadline is set by the school rather than by the examination timetable, usually months earlier than families expect.

  3. 03

A free trial on the weakest theme

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question in the theme the student currently fails. It ends with the tutor stating whether the loss is conceptual, mathematical or technique, and what they would address first. If the match is wrong, we propose someone else.

  4. 04

A written plan naming themes and components

You receive a plan that names syllabus themes and assessed components rather than describing general improvement, with the between-session work and the date everything counts back from. Named themes mean you can check whether sessions are doing what the plan said.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each note records whether the session's errors were conceptual, mathematical, uncertainty-related or technique. Over a month the pattern either thins or it does not, and if it does not we change the method or the tutor rather than quietly adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The physics and the maths separated first

A large share of lost physics marks are mathematical, and the two problems need different work. We diagnose which from a marked paper before the first session, because treating an algebra problem as a physics problem wastes a term and a considerable amount of money.

Uncertainty taught as a subject in its own right

It is examined in every paper and in the investigation and revised by almost nobody, which makes three or four focused sessions on it the best value available in the course. The gain shows up in both the written papers and the internal mark.

The investigation treated as 20%

Because that is what it is worth, at both levels, to a school deadline months before the examinations. We start with whether the research question can be answered by data a student can realistically collect, which is what decides most of the mark.

Sequencing advice, not an upsell

A student taking three sciences cannot absorb three tutored hours a week alongside six subjects and the core. We will say which subject to address first and rotate, because three partially used engagements cost three times as much and achieve less.

Claims that can be checked

Every AED figure names its publisher and the month read. Regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae. We publish no star ratings or improvement statistics, and describe no tutor as an IB examiner without evidenced current status.

Online by design, stated plainly

IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE. Lessons are one-to-one over live video with a shared whiteboard, which for physics costs almost nothing and buys a tutor chosen for the level they teach rather than the distance they can drive.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

How do I tell whether my child's problem is physics or maths?+

From a marked paper rather than a conversation, because the distinction is visible in the working. If the mechanism is identified and the right equation selected but the mark is lost in rearranging, a power of ten, or a trigonometric ratio, the problem is mathematical and three to four weeks of manipulation practice in physics contexts usually fixes it. If the student cannot say why an effect happens, the problem is conceptual and needs theme teaching. Treating one as the other costs a term, which is why we ask for marked work before the first session.

How is the Diploma physics syllabus organised now, and what is examined?+

The current syllabus is organised into space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics, with Higher Level extending several of them substantially, most heavily in fields and in nuclear and quantum work. Assessment is two written papers, one including a data-based section, plus the scientific investigation at 20% of the grade. The IB does revise courses, so confirm the current structure and paper arrangements with your child's subject teacher rather than relying on any website.

Why does uncertainty cost so many marks?+

Because it is examined everywhere and revised nowhere. Uncertainty appears in the data-based paper section, inside ordinary calculation questions through significant figures, and twice over in the investigation's data analysis and evaluation. It is not a theme, so it never appears as a heading in a revision guide and students skip it. The failures are consistent: absolute and percentage uncertainty confused, uncertainty not propagated through multi-step calculations, and uncertainty bars drawn on a graph but never used to judge whether a relationship is supported.

How much of the physics grade is the internal investigation worth?+

Twenty per cent at both Higher and Standard Level. It is designed, carried out and written by the student and marked against published criteria covering research design, data collection and processing, analysis and conclusion, and evaluation. Critically, it is submitted to a school deadline that sits months before the examinations, so a family engaging a tutor in the final terms has already lost the chance to influence a fifth of the grade. If you are deciding when physics tutoring is worth buying, that weighting argues for the first Diploma year.

My son takes Higher Level physics with Standard Level maths. Is that a problem?+

It is workable and it is harder than the syllabus documents suggest. The Higher Level extensions in fields and in nuclear and quantum physics assume manipulation fluency that Standard Level mathematics does not drill to the same depth. The signal to watch for is a student who follows the lesson perfectly and then completes the problem set slowly: that is a mathematical ceiling, not a physics one. Noticed in the first term it is three or four weeks of work; noticed in the fourth it is a much larger repair.

Why do explanation questions score so badly even when the answer is right?+

Because a physics explanation is marked for a chain of reasoning and most students stop one step short of the mechanism. An accurate description of what happens earns the description marks; naming the force, the field, the energy transfer or the photon interaction is what earns the remaining marks. Students find this arbitrary until they see their own answer against a broken-down mark scheme, at which point it usually clicks. It is one of the fastest improvements available, because the physics is already understood.

Can an online tutor help with a laboratory-based investigation?+

With everything except the laboratory work itself, which belongs to the school. A tutor can test whether the research question is answerable with data your child can realistically collect, teach the uncertainty and processing treatment using the student's own measurements, explain what each assessed criterion rewards, question whether a conclusion follows, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor must not design the investigation, supply data, or write any part of the report. In practice the feasibility conversation before any data is collected is where most of the value sits.

Should we tutor physics and chemistry at the same time?+

Usually not in the same term. A student taking three sciences has three investigations and three sets of papers, and three tutored hours a week on top of six subjects and the core means the between-session work is the first thing dropped. The better structure is sequencing: address the subject whose investigation deadline falls first or whose marks are furthest from target, then rotate. One subject properly used beats three partially used, and it costs a third as much in any given month.

What should we budget for physics tutoring for one Diploma subject?+

Published figures put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour is AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. Those are market figures read in October 2026, not our prices; we quote after a free trial for the actual level.

Is the data-based section of the paper worth practising separately?+

Yes, and it is the section most often left unrehearsed, because it cannot be revised by rereading notes. It asks a student to read data they have not seen before, judge whether a relationship is linear, extract a gradient and intercept with their physical meaning, and use uncertainty bars to decide whether a proposed relationship is supported. The only preparation that works is repeated practice on unfamiliar data sets, which is why every session in a technique block here includes one.

My daughter came from IGCSE physics with a grade 8 and is now struggling. Why?+

Because the method changed, not because the capability did. IGCSE physics rewards well-learned standard answers; Diploma physics requires explanations that name mechanisms and mathematics that is continuous rather than arithmetical. A student who scored highly by memorising responses finds the first Diploma term genuinely hard, and reads that as a loss of ability. It is a method problem and it resolves within a term with explanation drills and manipulation practice. Recognising it early prevents a confidence problem turning into a subject-choice regret.

Do you provide IB physics past papers or data booklets?+

No. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from material your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank raises a fair question about provenance, and occasionally about whether material has been released at all. The school's own holdings are also what your child will be marked against.

Are your physics tutors IB examiners?+

We do not make that claim, because current examiner status is rarely verifiable and it is widely asserted in this market without support. What we will tell you about any tutor is which level they teach, how long they have taught it to examination, and what they have taught recently. Examiner status is also sometimes used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content, which it does not confer. If a provider leans on the examiner label, asking how the status is evidenced is a reasonable question.

How long does it take for physics marks to move?+

For a mathematical cause, three to four weeks, because manipulation improves with repetition and shows up directly in the next marked paper. For uncertainty, often faster, since two or three focused sessions eliminate a leak that was costing marks on every paper. Conceptual gaps take one to three weeks per theme. Investigation work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it. Session notes record which error class appeared, so the trend is in the record rather than in impressions.

Can sessions be held at a weekend instead of after school?+

Yes, and for some work a weekend is better. Investigation sessions and whole-paper practice need an uninterrupted block rather than a squeezed hour, so Saturday or Sunday suits them, particularly for households commuting out of this community where nobody is realistically free before 5.30pm on a school day. Weekday sessions are better for short, frequent fluency work. Naming the problem first makes the choice obvious, and the slot stays held in Gulf Standard Time either way.

Level, mathematics course, and where the investigation stands

Three facts get the first session right: Higher or Standard Level, which mathematics course your child takes alongside it, and whether the scientific investigation is unstarted, drafted or submitted. Add a photograph of recently marked work and the diagnosis is usually complete before anyone speaks. Next is a free trial lesson on an unfamiliar question in the weakest theme, with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan naming themes and components. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE. If the loss turns out to be mathematical, we will say so.
