IGCSE Maths Tutor in The Sustainable City

An IGCSE maths tutor in The Sustainable City should be able to tell you, in the first conversation, which specification your child sits and which five topics are costing the marks. This page is written that way: Cambridge 0580 against Pearson 4MA1, what each paper assesses, the traps that recur in the mark schemes, and how a past paper should actually be worked. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with the working written out on a shared whiteboard as it happens.

  • Matched to a specification: Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, Core, Extended or tier
  • Method marks enforced on every multi-step question, not mentioned once
  • Topic-level diagnosis from a marked paper rather than a general assessment
  • Free trial lesson on the current weakest topic, with the tutor who continues

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

Two specifications, and the one your child sits decides everything

The first question any mathematics tutor should ask is which specification your child is entered for. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580 and splits into Core and Extended. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A is 4MA1 and splits into Foundation and Higher tiers, with two written papers at each tier. Both report on the 9 to 1 scale, both are respected equally by universities, and they are not the same qualification. Past papers do not transfer between them and a tutor fluent in one is not automatically fluent in the other.

Most parents do not know which their child sits, which is entirely reasonable and easily fixed: the school's examinations officer can confirm the code in an email. It is worth getting before the first session rather than after it, because the difference shows up immediately in question style. Cambridge questions tend to be shorter and more numerous, moving quickly between topics; Pearson questions more often build in several parts on a single context. Students who are good at one style are not automatically good at the other.

The second question is topic-level. Mathematics is the most diagnosable subject on a school timetable, because almost every lost mark has one identifiable cause. In this community the recurring causes are consistent: algebraic manipulation that is slow rather than wrong, method marks forfeited by writing only an answer, trigonometry applied without checking which rule the triangle allows, and probability questions answered by instinct rather than by a tree or a table. None of these require a general mathematics course to repair.

The Sustainable City makes one part of this easier. The community sits off Al Qudra Road with a school inside its own gates, so children attending it are home in the middle of the afternoon rather than at the end of it. Mathematics is a subject where session timing has a measurable effect, because manipulation under fatigue produces errors a student would never make at four in the afternoon. Households commuting out to Motor City or Arabian Ranches should plan on a 5.30pm start or a weekend block.

Delivery is online and said plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in this community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard on which the working appears as it is written. For mathematics that is close to a complete substitute for sitting at the same table, because the diagnostic information a tutor needs is precisely the line where the student hesitates. What the format removes is the two car journeys at either end of a visit, which is why an online session can start while a teenager is still able to concentrate, and why the tutor can be the person who teaches your child's specification rather than the person who lives closest to it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics at this stage is three jobs: finishing the preparation that should have happened earlier, covering the specification, and converting knowledge into marks. These are the stages and what each one requires.

PREAges 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 preparation

The specification assumes fluency in operations that are not themselves examined: negatives, fractions, indices, rearranging, and reading a question precisely. A student who has to think about those cannot simultaneously think about the problem containing them. Everything on this list can be fixed in a term at this stage and becomes expensive to fix later.

Mid-phase arrivals are common across this belt as families move between communities and systems. A child joining a British-curriculum school in Year 9 from an American or CBSE sequence usually has two or three specific missing topics rather than a general weakness, and naming them before the IGCSE course begins is the cheapest intervention available.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, covering the specification

Content is met for the first time and the tier question is forming. The habits that decide the final grade are built here: writing method out, checking a result against the context, and distinguishing a question type from a question. Students who get through Year 10 on recall rather than understanding usually stall in the second year.

Internal Year 10 examinations in most Dubai schools feed directly into the tier decision for Year 11, and that decision has an entry deadline. A family hoping to keep Extended or Higher tier open should treat the end of Year 10 as the deadline for making it realistic, because after that the option closes administratively.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, converting knowledge into marks

In the examination year, almost all measurable improvement in mathematics comes from technique: showing method, pacing against marks, reading command words, and checking answers against the situation described. A student who can do the mathematics and loses eight marks a paper to habit is the commonest profile we see, and it is the fastest to improve.

UAE candidates sit the June series, with November available as the resit route. Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only and is not open to a Dubai candidate. Entry and tier decisions close months before the papers, so the useful question in the fourth term is what is already fixed rather than what could be.

NEXTAges 16+

Into A Level Mathematics or IB

IGCSE mathematics is the gateway to A Level Mathematics or IB Analysis and Approaches, and schools set their own grade thresholds for entry, usually in the top bands and sometimes with a specific requirement on the Extended or Higher tier paper. A student aiming at either route needs one named grade rather than a strong overall profile.

Additional Mathematics, where a Dubai school offers it, is the usual bridge into A Level or Higher Level work, and it is where the step up in algebraic demand first becomes visible. Students who find it uncomfortable have useful early information about which post-16 mathematics route will suit them.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the content map. These are the topic areas both specifications assess, with the specific thing that costs marks in each. A tutoring enquiry that names two of these is worth three that describe a general difficulty.

Number and accuracy

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Standard form, upper and lower bounds, percentage change in both directions, and rounding to significant figures. Bounds questions are the reliable mark-loser: students calculate correctly and then select the wrong bound for a division. Reverse percentage questions are the second, because the instinct is to work forwards.

Algebraic manipulation

All tiers

Expanding, factorising, rearranging and solving. This is the fluency layer the whole specification rests on, and slowness here produces errors in topics that have nothing to do with algebra. Quadratic factorising with a coefficient on the squared term is the single most common sticking point.

Equations, inequalities and simultaneous equations

All tiers

Simultaneous equations with one linear and one quadratic appear in the higher tiers and reward a methodical substitution. Inequality questions lose marks on the notation and on reversing the sign when multiplying by a negative, which is a habit rather than a gap.

Graphs and functions

All tiers

Sketching, transformations, gradients, and reading information off a curve. Students frequently calculate a gradient correctly and then omit the units or the context, which is where the final mark sits. Transformation questions reward describing the change precisely rather than approximately.

Geometry, trigonometry and Pythagoras

All tiers

Angle reasoning, circle theorems in the higher tiers, and the choice between the sine rule, the cosine rule and basic trigonometry. The recurring error is applying a right-angle method to a triangle that has no right angle. Reasons must be stated in angle questions, and an unjustified correct answer scores less.

Mensuration and similar shapes

All tiers

Volume and surface area of composite solids, arcs and sectors, and length, area and volume scale factors. Scale-factor questions are consistently under-answered because students apply the length factor to an area or a volume, which is one of the most predictable lost marks in the whole specification.

Probability and statistics

All tiers

Tree diagrams, conditional probability in the higher tiers, averages from grouped data, and cumulative frequency. Marks go missing when students answer a probability question by intuition instead of drawing the structure, and when grouped-data estimates are given as exact values.

Vectors and transformations

Extended and Higher

Column vectors, vector geometry proofs and combined transformations. Vector proof questions reward writing the route around the shape explicitly; students who try to see the answer rather than construct it lose the method marks even when the conclusion is right.

Non-calculator arithmetic

Where the specification requires it

Current specifications include assessment without a calculator, and fluency with fractions, surds and index laws is assumed there. Students who have relied on a calculator throughout Year 10 discover this late. Confirm with your school which papers your child sits without one.

Additional Mathematics

Where the school offers it

Taken alongside or after IGCSE mathematics as preparation for A Level or Higher Level work. Calculus and trigonometric identities are the pressure points, and students who cope by pattern-matching rather than understanding fail precisely the unfamiliar questions that distinguish the top grades.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes for IGCSE mathematics, matched to whether the problem is fluency, content or marks. Buying the wrong one is why families sometimes feel tutoring changed nothing.

Fluency drilling, deliberately repetitive

For students whose difficulty is speed and accuracy in manipulation rather than understanding. Sessions are dense and repetitive by design: expanding, factorising, rearranging, index laws, fraction arithmetic, until those operations no longer consume attention. It is unglamorous and it is the most reliable mathematics tutoring available at this level.

  • Timed manipulation sets, measured on speed and accuracy
  • Short daily between-session tasks rather than one long one
  • Progress measured in seconds per question, not topics covered
  • Free trial on the operation the student currently finds slowest

Topic repair from a marked paper

The commonest engagement. A recent marked paper is used to name the specific topics costing marks, and the sessions address those topics and nothing else until the same question type stops failing. Unfamiliar questions on the same topic follow, because familiarity with one question is not command of the topic.

  • Diagnosis from the student's own marked work, not a general test
  • Three or four named topics worked until the failure stops
  • Unfamiliar questions used to confirm the repair held
  • A short written note of what is now secure after each session

Mark-scheme and technique work

For students who understand the mathematics and lose marks anyway. Sessions run questions under timing and then dissect the official mark scheme line by line: which marks were method, which were accuracy, and which were available for a statement the student never made. This is where the fastest grade movement sits in Year 11.

  • Official mark schemes read line by line against the student's own answer
  • Method-mark discipline enforced on every multi-step question
  • Pacing practised as time per mark rather than per question
  • Whole papers under timing in the final weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

Cambridge 0580 against Pearson 4MA1, as a parent needs it

These are two different qualifications that cover broadly similar mathematics in different shapes, and the practical differences matter more than the content differences. Cambridge 0580 splits into Core and Extended, with Core capping the achievable grade and Extended reaching the top bands. Pearson 4MA1 splits into Foundation and Higher tiers, with two written papers at each tier, each two hours and each worth 100 marks, and a calculator permitted throughout.

Question style is where students feel the difference. Cambridge papers tend to carry a larger number of shorter questions, moving briskly between topics, which rewards breadth and penalises a student who is slow to switch context. Pearson papers more often build several parts on one scenario, which rewards a student who can follow a thread and penalises one who loses the context between parts. A student who performs well on one style will not necessarily perform well on the other, which is one reason past papers from the wrong board mislead.

The current Cambridge specification includes assessment without a calculator, which catches out students who have relied on one through Year 10. Because syllabus structures are revised, the paper numbers, durations and calculator rules should be confirmed with your school rather than taken from any website, including this one. What does not change is the practical advice: get the syllabus code from the examinations officer, then revise only from that board's past papers. Mixing the two sets is one of the most common causes of a student feeling unprepared despite having done a great deal of work.

02

The five topics that cost the most marks, and why

Across both specifications the same handful of topics generate most of the avoidable losses, and they are not the topics students fear. Students worry about circle theorems and vectors, which are hard but relatively well taught. The marks actually disappear in bounds, scale factors, reverse percentages, probability structure and inequality notation — topics that feel routine, get less revision time, and carry predictable traps that recur paper after paper.

Take scale factors, the clearest example. A question gives a length scale factor and asks for an area or a volume. The correct response squares or cubes the factor; the common response applies the length factor directly. Students who make this error almost always know the rule when asked directly, which means it is not a knowledge gap but a recognition failure: they did not notice which quantity the question asked about. That distinction changes the fix entirely, from teaching to question-reading practice.

Bounds behave the same way. A student calculates the upper and lower bound of each quantity correctly and then, dividing one by the other, selects the wrong combination for the maximum. It takes one session to explain and several weeks of repetition to make reliable. The table below lists the recurring traps with the fix, because a parent who knows these can check whether a tutor is actually working on them or just covering topics in order. If four sessions pass without any of these appearing, that is a reasonable question to ask.

RECURRING TRAPS IN IGCSE MATHS AND THE FIX

03

Method marks: the cheapest grade improvement in the subject

  • Method marks are awarded before the final answer in multi-step questions
  • The fix is enforcement across weeks, not a single explanation
  • Mark schemes distinguish method from accuracy; students should see both
  • Several marks a paper is frequently the distance to the next grade

Both specifications award method marks on multi-step questions. A student who writes only a final answer gets everything if it is right and nothing if it is wrong. A student who writes the method gets most of the marks even when the arithmetic slips at the last step. Over a two-hour paper that difference is routinely worth several marks, and several marks is frequently a grade boundary. Nothing else in mathematics tutoring is this cheap to fix.

The reason students resist is that writing method feels slow under time pressure, and at this age the instinct to save time is strong. The correction is not an explanation, because most students already understand the point when told. It is enforcement: every multi-step question in every session, with the tutor declining to look at an answer that arrives without working. Two to four weeks of that produces a habit that survives into the examination hall.

Reading a mark scheme with a student is the other half. Official schemes distinguish method marks from accuracy marks, and seeing their own answer against that breakdown is what converts an abstract instruction into a reason. A student who sees that three of five marks were available before any final answer tends to stop arguing about it. We work from the schemes the school legitimately holds and reference the boards' published material rather than distributing it. Once a student has seen two or three of their own answers broken down that way, the argument about writing method generally ends.

04

How a past paper should actually be worked

Most students use past papers as a familiarity exercise: attempt, check, feel reassured. That builds recognition rather than performance, and recognition fails under timing. The method that works is less comfortable. Attempt the question cold with no notes and a clock running. Mark it against the official scheme without charity. Write each lost mark as a reason rather than a number. Then rework only the reasons that repeat.

The classification matters more than the score. Content not known, command word misread, method not shown, arithmetic slip, and ran out of time are five different problems with five different fixes, and a student who records seventy-two percent has learned nothing actionable. A student who records that four of their eight lost marks were method marks has a plan for the week. This is the single habit that most distinguishes students whose mathematics improves from students who merely do more papers.

A practical note on volume. Four questions worked this way are worth more than a complete paper skimmed, and the first two weeks of any block we run are deliberately low on content for exactly this reason. Parents sometimes read that as slow progress. It is the diagnosis that makes the rest of the block efficient, and skipping it is how eight weeks of tutoring becomes eight weeks of general revision. The table below is the classification we use, and it is worth a parent keeping, because it turns a vague report of struggling into something specific enough to act on.

One-to-one, a group class or a centre: what each can diagnose

The honest comparison here is not about price per hour but about what each format can detect. A one-to-one session can identify that a student knows the scale-factor rule but fails to notice which quantity the question asks for. A group class of eight cannot, because the teaching has to address the average and the quiet student's specific recognition failure never surfaces. That is the real difference, and it explains why a cheaper format sometimes produces no change at all.

Published Dubai rates frame the trade-off. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visiting rates run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, and one premium provider advertises AED 650.

For IGCSE mathematics specifically, the qualified online tier is usually the right purchase, because the work is diagnosis and enforcement rather than rare expertise. Monthly packages in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits. All of these figures belong to the companies and rate guides that published them and were read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial.

The grade that decides the next course

  • A Level and IB mathematics entry thresholds are set by each school
  • Ask for the threshold in writing before deciding where tutoring goes
  • Ministry equivalency on the British track counts five subjects, not six
  • Arabic and Islamic Education are excluded from that count of five

IGCSE mathematics is a gateway qualification, and the gate is specific. Schools in Dubai set their own entry requirements for A Level Mathematics and for IB Analysis and Approaches, usually in the top grade bands and sometimes with a condition on the Extended or Higher tier paper rather than on the overall grade. A student aiming at either route needs one named grade in one named subject, which is a much narrower target than a good profile across nine subjects.

That narrowness is useful, because it tells a family where to spend. A student targeting A Level Mathematics with a predicted 6 and a requirement of 7 has a precise, affordable problem. The same student spreading tutoring across four subjects to lift everything by half a grade has an expensive and diffuse one. Ask the school's head of sixth form or the Diploma coordinator for the exact threshold, in writing, before deciding where the money goes.

For UAE university plans there is a separate rule worth knowing. Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. That is a minimum threshold rather than a competitive one, and it should not be confused with what a selective university actually asks for.

Timing a mathematics session in a Dubai week

  • Manipulation accuracy drops with fatigue, so session timing matters
  • 3.30pm starts are available for students at school inside the community
  • Weekend two-hour blocks suit whole-paper practice for commuting households
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Mathematics is less forgiving of fatigue than most subjects, because manipulation errors multiply when concentration drops and a session spent making avoidable slips teaches the wrong lesson. That makes session timing a practical variable rather than an administrative one. A student at school inside The Sustainable City can start at 3.30pm; a student travelling back from Motor City or Al Barsha is not realistically available until 5.30pm, and by seven the value of the hour has dropped noticeably.

The UAE week shapes the options. Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday leaves Saturday and Sunday as the only full days, which is why weekend sessions suit commuting households and why a two-hour weekend block is often the right format for whole-paper practice in the final term. During Ramadan, school hours shorten and the useful study window moves after Iftar, where a mathematics session frequently works better than any afternoon slot in that month.

On our side, slots are held in Gulf Standard Time, move after Iftar through Ramadan with the same tutor, and can pause during a school's own examination fortnight when additional sessions produce fatigue rather than marks. We do not rotate students between tutors to fill a diary. In mathematics the tutor's accumulated knowledge of which operation a student gets wrong under pressure is most of the value, and it takes weeks to rebuild with somebody new. That is also why we would rather hold one protected slot all year than fill a diary with sessions that keep moving.

Where we tutor

Where students in this belt travel from

The Sustainable City sits on Al Qudra Road between Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand villa communities. Each entry below names what changes for a mathematics session rather than repeating what the community looks like.

The Sustainable City

A school inside the community means children attending it are home in the middle of the afternoon, so a 3.30pm start is available. For mathematics that matters, because manipulation errors multiply when a student is tired.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road with its own school provision and a largely locally employed population. Parents home earlier can attend a first session and hear the topic-level diagnosis directly, which shortens the plan.

Mudon

Outward school runs to Motor City and Arabian Ranches put the first realistic session at about 5.30pm. For Higher and Extended tier work, a weekend block of two hours often produces more than two tired weekday hours.

Remraam

Apartment-led and close by, with frequent sibling bookings across different year groups on the same evening. Online delivery makes consecutive slots straightforward and attracts no travel charge.

Arabian Ranches 3

A young and fast-growing Year 9 to Year 11 cohort, where demand for Extended and Higher tier mathematics has arrived faster than local supply of people who have taught it to examination.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense British-curriculum cluster, with sports academies occupying several evenings a week. Single weekend sessions suit these households better than two weekday slots that keep being moved.

Town Square and Mudon Al Ranim

Further along the Dubailand corridor. Mid-year moves between here and this community generate bridging work, because schools teach the specification in different topic orders.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus code from the school

Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, and the tier. The examinations officer can confirm it in an email. Booking without it risks spending early sessions on the wrong question style, which is an expensive way to discover an administrative fact that takes a day to establish.

  2. 02

    Send a recently marked paper

A photograph of marked work is the whole diagnosis in mathematics, because the losses are visible on the page. We classify them as content, command word, method, arithmetic or timing, and that classification determines what the first four sessions contain and in which order.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on the weakest topic

Run by the tutor who would continue, on a topic the student currently fails rather than one they can perform. It ends with the tutor naming the first two topics they would address and roughly how long each should take. If the match is wrong, we propose someone else.

  4. 04

A plan with named topics and a date

You receive a written plan listing the specific topics, the between-session tasks and the date it counts back from. Topics are named from the specification rather than described loosely, so you can check whether the sessions are doing what the plan said.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each session note records which error classes appeared rather than which topics were covered. Over a month the classes either thin out or they do not, and if they do not we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours to the arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the specification, not the subject

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 differ in tiering, paper length, calculator rules and question style, and their past papers are not interchangeable. Because delivery is online, your child is matched to someone who teaches their exact specification and tier.

Diagnosis from the student's own marked work

Mathematics losses have identifiable causes, so we start from a marked paper rather than a general assessment. Naming three specific topics in the first conversation is worth more than a fortnight of broad revision in any subject, and in mathematics it is straightforward.

Method marks enforced, not mentioned

The cheapest available grade improvement is writing method out on multi-step questions, and it takes weeks of enforcement rather than one explanation. Tutors here decline to assess an answer that arrives with no working above it.

Rates with their publishers named

Every AED figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it, dated to the month it was read. We publish no star rating, satisfaction score or improvement statistic, because a number without a sample size and a method is not evidence.

Honest about what tutoring cannot do

In the final term the realistic gains are technique rather than content, and we say so before a booking. A provider promising a two-grade lift in six weeks is selling, and the student is the one who discovers that in August.

No approval claims and no UAE premises

IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, no ADEK or Ministry approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership, and no office in the UAE. Regulators are named on this page to help you read your child's school, not to suggest an endorsement we do not have.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

How do we find out whether our child sits 0580 or 4MA1?+

Email the school's examinations officer rather than the subject teacher and ask for the syllabus code and the tier. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580 with Core and Extended tiers; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A is 4MA1 with Foundation and Higher tiers. The codes matter because the papers differ in length, calculator rules and question style, and past papers do not transfer between them. It takes a day to establish and saves the first two sessions from being spent on the wrong board's question style.

Which five IGCSE maths topics cost students the most marks?+

Not the ones students fear. Across both specifications the avoidable losses cluster in length, area and volume scale factors, upper and lower bounds, reverse percentages, probability questions answered without drawing a tree or table, and inequalities where the sign is not reversed when multiplying by a negative. All five feel routine, which is why they get less revision time, and all five carry traps that recur paper after paper. Students usually know the rules when asked directly, which means the fix is question-reading practice rather than teaching.

Why does my son lose marks when he can do the maths?+

Most often because he writes only the final answer. Both specifications award method marks across multi-step questions, so an answer arriving alone scores everything when right and nothing when wrong, while written method scores most of the marks even when the last line slips. Over a two-hour paper that is routinely worth several marks and several marks is frequently a grade boundary. It takes two to four weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, because it is a habit rather than a misunderstanding.

Does the calculator rule differ between the two boards?+

Yes, and it catches families out. Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator throughout its two papers. The current Cambridge specification includes assessment without one, which is a problem for students who have relied on a calculator through Year 10 and have let fraction, surd and index fluency lapse. Because syllabus structures are revised periodically, confirm the paper arrangements with your school rather than relying on any website, then make sure revision practice matches the conditions your child will actually sit under.

What is the right way to use an IGCSE maths past paper?+

Attempt the question cold with no notes and a clock running, then mark it against the official scheme without charity, writing each lost mark as a reason rather than a number: content not known, command word misread, method not shown, arithmetic slip, or ran out of time. Then rework only the reasons that repeat. Four questions processed this way are worth more than a whole paper skimmed, because a percentage score is not actionable and a classified list of causes is a plan for the week.

Is a group class at a centre a reasonable alternative to one-to-one?+

It depends on the problem rather than the budget. A group class can address gaps common to the group, and that is genuinely useful for broad revision. What it cannot detect is an individual recognition failure — a student who knows the scale-factor rule but never notices which quantity the question asks for will stay silent in a class of eight and the error will persist. If a specific question type keeps failing, one-to-one is what finds the cause; if the issue is general coverage, a class may be enough.

My daughter is in Year 10. Will tutoring now actually help in Year 11?+

More than it will in Year 11 itself, in most cases. Year 10 is when content is met for the first time, when the habits that decide the final grade form, and when internal results feed the tier decision for Year 11. Fixing algebraic fluency or method-writing while the content is new takes a handful of sessions; the same gap in the fifth term has to be fixed while five other subjects compete for the hours and a predicted grade is already recorded. The gap does not change, only the cost of closing it.

How much should we budget for IGCSE maths tutoring in Dubai?+

Published rates put qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors advertising IGCSE from AED 150. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. For IGCSE mathematics the qualified online tier is usually the right purchase, because the work is diagnosis and enforcement. Those figures were read in October 2026 and are the market's, not ours.

Can a tutor work effectively on mathematics over video?+

Mathematics is the subject where online works best, because the whole discipline is the working on the page and a shared whiteboard shows that working as it appears. The tutor sees the line where the student hesitates, which is exactly the diagnostic information needed. Questions shared on screen and annotated step by step reproduce what happens on paper closely. The honest exception is younger children, roughly Year 5 and below, who often need an adult physically present for reasons unconnected to the subject.

What grade does my child need for A Level Maths or IB Analysis and Approaches?+

That is set by the school rather than by the board, usually in the top grade bands and sometimes with a condition on the Extended or Higher tier paper specifically rather than the overall grade. Ask the head of sixth form or the Diploma coordinator for the threshold in writing before deciding where tutoring money goes, because a student needing one named grade in one subject has a precise and affordable problem, while a family lifting four subjects by half a grade has an expensive and diffuse one.

Is Additional Mathematics worth taking if the school offers it?+

For a student heading towards A Level Mathematics or Higher Level Analysis and Approaches, usually yes, because it is where the step up in algebraic demand becomes visible while there is still time to respond to it. Calculus and trigonometric identities are the pressure points. A student who finds it genuinely uncomfortable has learned something valuable early about which post-16 mathematics route will suit them, which is worth more than the grade itself. For a student not continuing with mathematics, the time is usually better spent elsewhere.

Can we start with one session a week and increase later?+

That is what we would recommend. One weekly session with real between-session work beats two sessions that displace the work, and in mathematics the between-session repetition is where fluency actually improves. We increase to two in the weeks before a mock block or the series, and we increase sooner if the diagnosis shows a content gap rather than a habit problem. Starting at two and discovering the student cannot absorb it wastes a month and sours the arrangement.

Will a tutor come to our villa if we are willing to pay the premium?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE, at any price, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Sustainable City or any neighbouring community. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard. Home tutoring is a service we operate in India only. For mathematics the format difference is minimal, because the working is visible either way, and the gain is that the tutor is chosen for the specification they teach rather than for the distance they can drive at five in the afternoon.

Do you hand out past papers and mark schemes?+

No. Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright. We reference them, point to the official sources, and work from material your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank raises a fair question about provenance. The school's own holdings are also the papers your child will be marked against, so they are the better source in practice as well as the correct one.

How soon should we see marks move?+

For a habit problem such as unwritten method, about three to four weeks, because it shows up directly in the next marked paper. Fluency problems take four to eight weeks since they improve through repetition rather than instruction. Genuine content gaps take one to three weeks per topic. Each session note records which error classes appeared, so the trend is visible in the record rather than in anecdote. We publish no improvement statistics, because a figure with no sample size, date or method is marketing rather than evidence.

Two facts and a photograph

Send the syllabus code and tier, and a photograph of a recently marked paper. Those two things are usually enough to name the three topics costing the marks and the error classes behind them, which is where the first month of sessions should go. Next is a free trial lesson on the weakest topic with the tutor who would continue, then a short written plan listing the specific topics and the date it counts back from. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE. If the target grade is not reachable in the time left, we will say so first.
