IB Chemistry Tutor in The Sustainable City

Parents comparing options for an IB chemistry tutor in The Sustainable City are usually also comparing something else — this community against Arabian Ranches or Mudon, Higher Level against Standard Level, chemistry against biology. This page works through those comparisons in order, then sets out the Structure and Reactivity content map, where marks actually go, and what can still be influenced depending on when you start. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with mechanisms and calculations on a shared whiteboard.

  • Higher and Standard Level, with Structure and Reactivity named in session notes
  • Mechanism and energetics work, not general science support
  • An honest statement of what can still change, by the term you start in

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

Three comparisons, and only one of them has a local answer

Chemistry enquiries from this part of Dubai tend to arrive carrying three comparisons at once. The family is weighing their own community against the next one over, because they have just moved or are about to. They are weighing Higher Level against Standard Level, usually because a university route is in view. And they are weighing chemistry against biology, because one of the three sciences has to go and nobody is quite sure which. All three are reasonable. Only the first has a local answer, and that answer is probably not the one the family expects.

On the neighbourhood question: for Diploma chemistry, where you live in this belt changes when a session can happen and almost nothing else. The number of people in Dubai who teach Higher Level chemistry to examination standard, including organic mechanisms and energetics at depth, is modest, and they are not distributed evenly across villa communities. The Sustainable City, Mudon, Arabian Ranches 3 and Remraam all face the same thin local supply, and a denser informal recommendation network in one of them does not change that.

On level and subject, the answers are genuinely different per student and this page gives the dimensions rather than a verdict. Higher Level chemistry extends several areas substantially and carries a heavier mathematical load than most students expect. Chemistry against biology is usually decided by whether a student prefers quantitative reasoning or volume of precise terminology, and getting that choice right is worth more than two years of tutoring to correct it.

The current Diploma chemistry course is organised around two themes, Structure and Reactivity, each with three subdivisions, and assessed through two written papers, one of which includes a data-based section, plus the scientific investigation at 20% of the grade at both levels. Courses are revised periodically, so confirm the current arrangement with your child's subject teacher rather than taking it from any website, including this one.

Delivery is online and stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at an address in The Sustainable City, Mudon or Arabian Ranches. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard for mechanisms, calculations and diagrams. Home visits exist in our India operation only. For chemistry the format costs very little, because a mechanism drawn step by step on a shared whiteboard is clearer than one drawn upside down across a kitchen table. The format also removes the two car journeys either side of a visit, which is why a session can run while a student can still hold four steps of a cycle in mind, and why the tutor can be the person who teaches the level your child sits rather than the person who happens to live closest to it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry is taught across three stages here, and the decisions that matter most are taken before the Diploma begins. These are the stages and what each one actually requires.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years sciences

Four assessed criteria covering knowledge and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Students who score well on knowledge and poorly on processing are building exactly the profile that struggles with the Diploma investigation, because that criterion is its direct ancestor.

In the IB continuum school inside this community, MYP science marks feed the Diploma level conversation directly. A student aiming at Higher Level chemistry should be watching the processing and evaluating criterion rather than the knowledge one, because the Diploma assesses data handling at 20% and recall considerably less generously than MYP does.

DP-SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry at Standard Level

Covers Structure and Reactivity at core depth with two written papers and the investigation at 20%. The characteristic Standard Level loss is in calculations rather than concepts: moles arithmetic under time pressure, sign conventions in energetics, and equilibrium questions answered in words when the command term asked for a number.

Standard Level chemistry is the common choice for Dubai students heading towards biological sciences, psychology or business who want a second science. It is more quantitative than most expect, and the data-based section of the written paper assumes graph and uncertainty skills that are rarely practised deliberately.

DP-HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry at Higher Level

Extends energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry substantially. Organic mechanisms are the area where Higher Level students most often stall, usually because they memorise arrows rather than reasoning from electron density. The mathematical load is heavier than Standard Level students realise when they upgrade.

Dubai families usually choose Higher Level chemistry with medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biochemistry or chemical engineering in view. Requirements differ by country and institution and are revised, so read the admissions pages of the specific universities on the shortlist, and check whether a minimum grade rather than just the subject is specified.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · The transition year

IGCSE or MYP science into Diploma chemistry

The step up has two components. Calculations become multi-stage rather than single-step, and explanations must reason from structure rather than recall a rule. A student who scored highly at IGCSE by learning standard answers finds the first Diploma term genuinely hard, which is a method problem rather than a capability one and resolves within a term if it is named.

Families moving between communities in this belt often change schools and boards in the same year, so a student may arrive in the first Diploma year from a different science sequence with two or three unmet topics. A short bridging block in the first term is far cheaper than remediation in the examination year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the content map by area, with the specific thing that costs marks in each. An enquiry that names an area and a question type produces a better first session than one describing general difficulty.

Structure 1: models of the particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Atomic structure, electron configuration, ionisation energies and the mole concept. The mole is where the whole subject either works or does not, and students who are approximate with it lose marks in every later area. Ionisation energy explanations need shielding and nuclear charge named, not implied.

Structure 2: models of bonding and structure

HL and SL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, and shapes of molecules. The reliable loss is explaining a physical property by naming the wrong force: students attribute a boiling point to covalent bond strength when the answer is the intermolecular force being broken.

Structure 3: classification of matter

HL and SL

Periodicity, the periodic table's organisation, and spectroscopic identification of substances at Higher Level. Trend questions lose marks when a student states the trend correctly and gives no reason, because the reason is where most of the marks sit.

Reactivity 1: what drives chemical reactions

HL and SL

Energetics and thermochemistry, including enthalpy cycles and entropy at Higher Level. Sign errors are the single most common loss in the whole subject: an exothermic value entered as positive invalidates everything downstream even when the method is perfect.

Reactivity 2: how much, how fast and how far

HL and SL

Reaction rates, equilibrium and acid-base behaviour, with substantial Higher Level extension including buffer calculations. Equilibrium questions are frequently answered qualitatively when a numerical answer was demanded, which earns nothing regardless of how sound the reasoning is.

Reactivity 3: mechanisms of chemical change

HL and SL

Redox and organic chemistry, with mechanisms extended considerably at Higher Level. Mechanism marks are lost by drawing a curly arrow from the wrong species: the arrow must start at an electron pair, and students who have memorised the diagram rather than the reasoning cannot adapt it.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

Twenty per cent of the grade, designed and written by the student against published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The usual cause of a weak mark is a research question that produces too few usable data points to analyse properly.

Data analysis and the data-based paper section

HL and SL

Graph work, uncertainty, and judging whether a proposed relationship is supported by the data presented. This section cannot be revised by rereading notes, which is precisely why it is the part of the paper most often left unrehearsed.

The mathematics inside chemistry

HL and SL

Moles, ratio reasoning, logarithms in pH calculations, rearranging before substituting, and significant figures that match the data. A meaningful share of lost chemistry marks are arithmetical, and that is a diagnosable distinction rather than a guess.

Biology and physics alongside chemistry

HL and SL

Most chemistry students take at least one of these, and the overlap in uncertainty treatment and data handling is direct. Tutoring two sciences in the same term is usually a mistake, and the reason sits in the section on when to engage a tutor.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes for chemistry tuition, chosen by whether the obstacle is calculation, mechanism reasoning or the investigation. Those are different jobs and the sessions look nothing alike.

Calculation discipline

For students whose chemistry is sound and whose arithmetic is not. Sessions drill moles, ratio reasoning, energetics sign conventions, pH logarithms and significant figures, in chemistry contexts rather than as abstract exercises. It is the least interesting chemistry tutoring available and frequently the most effective at Standard Level.

  • Moles and ratio work drilled until it stops consuming attention
  • Energetics sign conventions enforced on every calculation
  • Significant figures checked against the data every time
  • Free trial diagnosing whether this is the real problem

Mechanism reasoning

For Higher Level students stalling in organic chemistry. The work is to replace memorised diagrams with reasoning from electron density: where the electron pair is, what it attacks, why that species and not another. A student who can reason this way handles unseen mechanisms; one who has memorised cannot.

  • Curly arrows justified from electron pairs, never copied
  • Unseen mechanisms used every session to test the reasoning
  • Reagent and condition reasoning rather than recall lists
  • Written note of what is now secure after each session

Investigation support, early and bounded

Sessions on the scientific investigation, working only on the student's own design and writing. The highest-value work happens before data collection: establishing whether the question will produce enough usable data points to analyse, which is what determines most of the mark long before anything is written up.

  • Research question feasibility tested before any data is collected
  • Uncertainty and processing taught on the student's own measurements
  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published criteria
  • No design chosen, no data supplied, no text written by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

Comparison one: this community against the next one over

Families in this belt move often enough that the neighbourhood comparison is usually live rather than hypothetical. For chemistry specifically, the honest finding is that the communities differ in two respects and not in the one most parents are asking about. They differ in when a session can start, which follows from the school run. They differ in what a visiting tutor would charge, which follows from the drive. They do not differ in who can teach Higher Level chemistry, because that pool is thin across the whole emirate.

The timing difference is substantial enough to matter. A student at the school inside The Sustainable City is home by mid-afternoon, which makes a 3.30pm session possible. A student commuting from Mudon or Remraam to a school in Motor City or Al Barsha is not realistically available until half past five, and for organic mechanism work — which needs sustained attention rather than quick recall — the quality of a seven o'clock session is visibly lower. That is a genuine argument for weekend blocks in commuting households.

The cohort-size difference is the one worth more attention than it usually gets. Smaller schools in this belt teach Diploma chemistry with one specialist and a modest cohort, which has advantages and one specific disadvantage: there is no second teacher inside the building offering a different explanation of the same mechanism. That is the most common legitimate reason a family here engages a tutor, and it applies in every community in this corridor equally.

Comparison two: Higher Level against Standard Level chemistry

This decision is usually made on a university requirement and should also be made on a workload calculation. Higher Level chemistry extends energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry substantially, and the organic extension in particular demands reasoning rather than recall. The mathematical load also rises: pH and buffer calculations use logarithms, and energetics cycles require careful sign discipline across multiple steps.

Students who upgrade from Standard to Higher Level during the first Diploma year are frequently surprised by the mechanism work rather than by the content volume. Memorising a mechanism works at Standard Level and fails at Higher Level, where unfamiliar substrates appear and the student has to reason from electron density. That shift is teachable in a few weeks if it is identified, and it is the single most common reason a capable Higher Level chemistry student stalls between the first and second year.

The level decision also interacts with what else is being taken. Higher Level chemistry alongside Higher Level biology — the common pre-medicine combination in this belt — means two scientific investigations in the same year, both due to school deadlines in the same term. That is a scheduling problem rather than an academic one, and it is solvable only if the family notices it in the first Diploma year rather than the second. The table below sets out the dimensions that actually decide the level, including the right-fit signals that are visible by the end of the first term.

03

Comparison three: chemistry, biology or physics as the science that stays

Most Diploma students in this belt take two sciences at most, which means one gets dropped, and the choice is frequently made on which teacher the student liked in the Middle Years Programme. That is a poor basis for a two-year commitment. The better basis is the kind of thinking each subject rewards, because a student working against their own grain spends two years producing effort without marks and usually blames themselves for it.

The distinction in practice is this. Chemistry rewards quantitative reasoning and structural logic: a student who likes working out why a property follows from a structure will do well. Biology rewards volume and terminological precision: a student who can hold a large amount of exact vocabulary and deploy it accurately will do well. Physics rewards mathematical modelling and mechanism: a student comfortable with algebra and abstraction will do well. All three reward data handling, which is why that skill transfers.

University requirements complicate the choice and should be checked rather than assumed. Medicine commonly expects chemistry and frequently biology; engineering commonly expects physics and mathematics; biochemistry and pharmacy usually want chemistry; psychology varies widely. Published requirements differ by country and institution and are revised, so read the admissions pages of the specific universities being considered. Where the requirement genuinely constrains the choice, that settles it; where it does not, the grain of the student's thinking should. A student who is genuinely unsure usually finds the answer in one honest diagnostic session on an unseen question in each subject.

Where chemistry marks actually go

Chemistry is diagnosable in a way that essay subjects are not, and the losses repeat so reliably that they are worth publishing. Four causes account for most of them: approximate moles work, sign errors in energetics, curly arrows drawn from the wrong species, and qualitative answers given to quantitative command terms. None of these are gaps in understanding the subject. They are precision failures, and precision failures are correctable in weeks rather than terms.

Sign errors deserve particular attention because of how much they cost. An enthalpy change entered with the wrong sign invalidates every downstream step in a cycle, so a student who understands the whole method perfectly can score close to nothing on a multi-mark question. The fix is procedural: write the sign convention at the top of the working every time, before any numbers appear. Students resist this as unnecessary until they see a marked paper where it cost them five marks.

The mechanism failures are different in kind, because they reveal how the student learned the material. A curly arrow must start at an electron pair, and a student who has memorised a diagram will place the arrow correctly on the familiar substrate and incorrectly on anything else. That is why a tutor should test every mechanism on an unseen substrate rather than the textbook one. The table sets out the recurring causes so a parent can check that sessions are addressing them rather than covering content in syllabus order.

When to engage a tutor, and what can still be influenced

Because the investigation is 20% of the grade and is submitted to a school deadline months before the examinations, the question of when a family starts matters more in the sciences than almost anywhere else in the Diploma. This is also the comparison nobody in this market publishes, presumably because the honest version includes a column where the answer is no longer very much. A family deciding where to spend should see it anyway.

The pattern is straightforward. In the first term of the first Diploma year, everything is still available: content, the investigation, the level decision itself. By the final term of the first year, the content and the investigation are both live but the level decision has usually closed. By the first term of the second year, the investigation is in draft and only paper technique and content repair remain fully open. By the final term, the investigation is submitted and the realistic gains are technique alone.

None of those positions is hopeless, and technique gains in the final term are real — command-term discipline, sign conventions, pacing, and the data-based section are all improvable quickly. What is not available is influence over a fifth of the grade that has already been banked. A tutor who implies otherwise in the final term is selling, and a family who understands the table below buys the right thing at the right time rather than more of the wrong thing late.

What chemistry tutoring costs across this belt

The rate follows the tutor rather than the postcode, with one exception. Published Dubai figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650 an hour. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65.

The exception is travel. In-home visiting rates are published at AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to AED 500. That is where the neighbourhood genuinely affects the number, because a tutor pricing an Al Qudra Road run and one pricing a trip into Arabian Ranches are pricing different journeys and both build it into the hour. Monthly packages in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits.

For Higher Level chemistry, the specialist tier is usually the right purchase, because what is being bought is mechanism reasoning and investigation judgement rather than general subject knowledge. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. All these figures belong to the companies and rate guides that published them and were read in October 2026. IB Gram publishes no hourly list here and quotes after a free trial.

The honesty boundary, and what the regulators actually do

  • No investigation designed, no data supplied or adjusted, no report text written
  • Past papers, mark schemes and data booklets referenced, never distributed
  • No examiner claims without current, evidenced examiner status
  • No regulator approval, accreditation or partnership claimed anywhere

Chemistry makes the academic honesty question concrete, because an investigation involves data and data can be invented. A tutor may teach the underlying chemistry, explain what each criterion rewards, test whether a research question produces enough usable data points, question whether a conclusion follows from the results, teach uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not design the investigation, supply or adjust data, write or redraft any part of the report, or provide a model to adapt.

One operation in this market sells completed internal assessments at AED 3,750. Buying one is academic misconduct under IB rules and the consequence falls on the candidate, whose diploma is what is at risk. On materials, IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright; we reference and cite them and work from what the school legitimately holds. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners without evidenced current status.

On regulators, the position is narrow and deliberate. Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate — 227 schools and 387,441 students in 2024-25, with the IB at 7% of enrolment. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education covers Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, approval or partnership from any of them, nor from the IB, and has no UAE office. An individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

08

Session timing compared across the belt

  • Calculation work benefits from two short sessions rather than one long one
  • Mechanism and investigation work needs an uninterrupted block
  • 3.30pm starts are available for students at school inside the community
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Chemistry has two kinds of work with different timing needs, which is why a single weekly slot sometimes serves a student badly. Calculation drilling benefits from frequency: two short sessions in a week beat one long one, because moles fluency improves through repetition spread over days. Mechanism reasoning and investigation work benefit from an uninterrupted block, because both involve holding several steps in mind at once and a fragmented hour wastes the setup time.

Where a family lives in this belt then decides what is practical. A student at school inside The Sustainable City can take a short weekday session at 3.30pm and a longer weekend block. A student commuting from Mudon, Remraam or Arabian Ranches 3 is realistically limited to one weekday evening slot, which usually means the weekend block carries the mechanism work. That is a genuine, if unglamorous, difference between neighbourhoods and it is the one worth planning around.

The UAE calendar does the rest. The working week runs Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only full days. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar, where a chemistry session is frequently better than any afternoon slot in that month. We hold slots in Gulf Standard Time, move them after Iftar with the same tutor, and pause blocks during a school's own examination fortnight rather than adding sessions that produce fatigue. We also keep the same tutor across a term rather than rotating students to fill a diary, because knowing which calculation a particular student rushes under pressure is most of what makes a later session efficient.

Where we tutor

This community and the ones families weigh it against

The Sustainable City sits on Al Qudra Road between Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand villa belt. Each entry names what genuinely differs for a chemistry session, which is almost entirely about timing.

The Sustainable City

Five residential clusters with a school inside the community, so students attending it are home by mid-afternoon. A 3.30pm chemistry session is therefore available, which matters for mechanism work that needs sustained attention.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Established communities with schools on the doorstep and a dense informal tutor network. That network circulates general and primary recommendations rather than Higher Level chemistry specialists, which is the distinction this page keeps returning to.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases with a secondary cohort growing fast, so Diploma science demand has arrived more recently than local provision. The IGCSE into first Diploma year transition is the most common request from these households.

Mudon

Outward school runs mean a 5.30pm start is the first realistic one. For Higher Level chemistry a weekend two-hour block often achieves more than two tired weekday hours, particularly for organic mechanism work.

Remraam

Apartment-led and close by, with frequent sibling bookings across year groups on the same evening. Online scheduling handles consecutive slots without any travel charge attached to the second one.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road with its own school provision and a largely locally employed population, so parents are more often able to attend a first session and hear the diagnosis directly.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense school cluster, with training taking several evenings a week. Single weekend sessions suit investigation work better than weekday slots that keep moving.

Dubai Hills Estate

Up the corridor with the most competitive Diploma subject-choice conversations in this part of Dubai. Higher Level chemistry with Higher Level biology is the most requested combination from these communities, usually with medicine in view.

School ecosystem

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and where the investigation stands

Higher or Standard Level, and whether the investigation is unstarted, question chosen, data collected or written up. Those two facts decide the priority order, because a fifth of the grade is attached to a school deadline that sits well before the examination timetable.

  2. 02

    Send a recently marked paper

Chemistry losses are visible on the page. We look for whether the cause is moles arithmetic, energetics signs, mechanism reasoning or command-term reading, because those four need different kinds of session and the wrong one wastes a month of weekly hours.

  3. 03

A free trial on an unseen question

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question or an unseen mechanism substrate rather than a textbook example, because how a student handles the unfamiliar is the whole diagnosis. It ends with the tutor naming the first thing they would address and why.

  4. 04

A written plan naming areas and components

You receive a plan naming the syllabus areas, Structure or Reactivity, and the assessed components rather than describing general improvement, with the between-session work and the date everything counts back from. Named areas mean the plan can be checked.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with a classified error log

Each note records whether the session's errors were arithmetical, mechanistic, command-term or uncertainty related. Over a month the pattern thins or it does not. If it does not, we change the method or the tutor rather than adding hours to the arrangement.

Honest about what the neighbourhood changes

For Higher Level chemistry the local supply is thin everywhere in this corridor, so we say that rather than claiming a local advantage. What the community genuinely changes is session timing, and that we plan around explicitly.

Mechanism reasoning, not memorised diagrams

Every mechanism is tested on an unseen substrate, because a memorised diagram works on the familiar case and fails on the examined one. Reasoning from electron density is the specific skill Higher Level organic chemistry assesses.

Precision failures treated as what they are

Moles approximation, energetics sign errors and calculator significant figures are precision failures rather than knowledge gaps, and they are fixable in weeks with enforcement. Naming the cause is what makes the next month efficient.

The investigation treated as 20%

At both levels, to a school deadline months before the examinations. We start with whether the research question produces enough usable data to analyse, which decides most of the mark before any writing happens.

An explicit statement of what cannot be changed

Starting in the final term, the realistic gains are technique and not content, and the investigation is already banked. We publish that as a table rather than discovering it with you after a booking.

Claims that can be checked

Every AED figure names its publisher and the month read. Regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae. We publish no star ratings or improvement statistics and claim no approval from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or any board.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

Does it matter whether a chemistry tutor lives in this community or in Arabian Ranches?+

For Diploma chemistry, no. The number of people in Dubai who teach Higher Level chemistry to examination standard, including organic mechanisms and energetics at depth, is modest and they are not spread evenly across villa communities. Arabian Ranches has a denser informal network, but it circulates general and primary-level recommendations rather than Higher Level specialists. What genuinely differs between these neighbourhoods is when a session can start. IB Gram delivers online one-to-one and sends no tutors to UAE addresses, so the match is made on level taught.

How is the current IB chemistry course organised?+

Around two themes, Structure and Reactivity, each with three subdivisions: Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and classification of matter; Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much, how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Assessment is two written papers, one including a data-based section, plus the scientific investigation at 20% at both levels. The IB revises courses, so confirm the current structure with your child's subject teacher rather than any website.

Why do energetics questions cost my son so many marks?+

Almost certainly sign conventions. An enthalpy change entered with the wrong sign invalidates every subsequent step in a cycle, so a student who understands the method completely can score close to nothing on a multi-mark question. The fix is procedural rather than conceptual: write the sign convention at the top of the working before any numbers appear, every time, without exception. Students resist it as unnecessary until they see a marked paper where it cost five marks. It is the fastest available improvement in the subject.

My daughter memorises organic mechanisms and still loses marks. Why?+

Because mechanism marks are awarded for the reasoning, not the diagram. A curly arrow must start at an electron pair and point at the species being attacked, and a student who has memorised the textbook case will place the arrow correctly there and incorrectly on anything unfamiliar. Higher Level questions use unfamiliar substrates deliberately. The fix is to rebuild the reasoning from electron density and then test every mechanism on an unseen substrate, which takes a few weeks and changes the Higher Level organic marks noticeably.

Should my child take chemistry or biology if only one science can stay?+

Decide from the kind of thinking each rewards, unless a university requirement settles it first. Chemistry rewards quantitative reasoning and structural logic — deducing why a property follows from a structure. Biology rewards holding a large volume of exact terminology and deploying it precisely. A student working against their own grain spends two years producing effort without marks. Where medicine is the target, chemistry is commonly expected and biology frequently is, but requirements differ by country and institution, so check the published pages of the specific universities.

How much of the chemistry grade is the internal investigation?+

Twenty per cent at both Higher and Standard Level, designed and carried out by the student and marked against published criteria covering research design, data collection and processing, analysis and conclusion, and evaluation. It is submitted to a school deadline months before the examinations, which means a family starting in the final terms has already lost the chance to influence a fifth of the grade. The commonest cause of a weak mark is a research question that produces too few usable data points to analyse properly.

Is it too late to start chemistry tutoring in the final term?+

Not too late to be useful, but the target must be honest. In the final term the realistic gains are technique: command-term discipline, sign conventions, pacing against marks, and the data-based section of the paper. Narrow content repair on recurring topics is also possible. What is not available is any influence over the investigation, which is already submitted and banked, or broad content coverage. A tutor who implies a two-grade lift in that window is selling, and we would rather state the target before a booking.

What does Higher Level chemistry add that Standard Level does not?+

Substantial extension in energetics with entropy and spontaneity, in acids, bases and equilibrium with buffer and logarithmic calculations, in redox, and most demandingly in organic mechanisms where unfamiliar substrates appear. The mathematical load rises with it. Students upgrading mid-year are usually surprised by the mechanism reasoning rather than the content volume, because memorisation works at Standard Level and fails at Higher Level. That shift is teachable within a few weeks once it is identified as the actual problem.

Can a tutor help with the chemistry investigation without crossing a line?+

Yes, within a boundary worth stating. A tutor may teach the chemistry, explain what each criterion rewards, test whether a research question will produce enough usable data, teach uncertainty treatment on the student's own measurements, question whether a conclusion follows from the results, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not design the investigation, supply or adjust data, write or redraft any part of the report, or hand over a model to adapt. The data point matters here because data can be invented, and must not be.

My child takes Higher Level chemistry and Higher Level biology. Is that manageable?+

It is the common pre-medicine pairing in this belt and it is manageable with one specific piece of planning: two scientific investigations fall due in the same year, both to school deadlines in roughly the same term. That is a scheduling problem rather than an academic one and it is solvable only if it is noticed in the first Diploma year. Families who sequence the two investigations deliberately cope well; families who discover the collision in the second year generally compromise one of them.

Does online delivery work for drawing mechanisms?+

Better than most parents expect. A shared whiteboard shows the mechanism being drawn step by step, right way up and large enough to see, with the tutor able to stop at the exact arrow that is wrong. Compare that with a tutor drawing upside down across a kitchen table. Calculations work the same way, with the working visible as it is produced, which is the diagnostic information a tutor needs. The honest exception remains younger children, who often need an adult physically present for unrelated reasons.

What should we expect to pay for Higher Level chemistry support?+

Published Dubai figures put qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. For Higher Level work the specialist tier is usually the right purchase, because mechanism reasoning and investigation judgement are what is being bought. Bestimate's monthly estimate for one weekly hour runs AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market. These figures were read in October 2026 and belong to the companies that published them, not to us.

Why do you ask for a marked paper before the first session?+

Because chemistry losses are diagnosable from the page and not from a conversation. Looking at marked work tells us whether the cause is approximate moles arithmetic, energetics signs, mechanism reasoning or command-term reading, and those four need different sessions with sometimes different tutors. A parent's description of struggling with chemistry is honest and not actionable; four lost marks in a cycle with a correct method is actionable immediately. It usually saves a month of generalised weekly hours.

Do you supply IB chemistry data booklets or past papers?+

No. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from what your child's school legitimately holds, with questions shown on screen during sessions. A service advertising an unlimited paper bank raises a fair question about provenance and occasionally about unreleased material. The school's own holdings are also what your child will be marked against, which makes them the better source in practice.

How quickly should we expect chemistry marks to change?+

For precision failures — moles approximation, energetics signs, significant figures — three to four weeks, because they show up directly in the next marked paper once the habit is enforced. Mechanism reasoning takes four to six weeks, since it is a change in how the material is held rather than a fact to learn. Investigation work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it. Session notes record which error class appeared, so the trend sits in the record rather than in impressions.

Level, investigation status, and a marked paper

Three things make the first chemistry session useful: Higher or Standard Level, whether the scientific investigation is unstarted, drafted or submitted, and a photograph of recently marked work. From those we can usually name whether the problem is moles arithmetic, energetics signs, mechanism reasoning or command-term reading, and say honestly what is still influenceable from where you are in the year. Next is a free trial lesson on an unseen question with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan naming areas and components. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE.
