IB Tutor near me in The Sustainable City

Searching for an IB tutor near me in The Sustainable City usually produces a list of people sorted by distance, which is the wrong sort order for a Diploma subject. This page sorts by syllabus instead: what each paper is worth, which command terms decide the band, where the scientific investigation loses its marks, and how past papers should actually be worked. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and live over video into this community off Al Qudra Road, so the tutor is chosen by the course they teach rather than by their postcode.

  • Command terms and mark-scheme wording worked explicitly, question by question

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

Sorted by syllabus, not by distance

A near me search is a sensible instinct applied to the wrong problem. For a piano teacher, distance is a reasonable first filter. For Chemistry at Higher Level, the first filter should be whether the person has taught the current syllabus through a full examination cycle, knows what the scientific investigation criteria reward, and can tell you why a particular answer scored four out of six. There are perhaps five hundred villas in The Sustainable City. The chance that the right Higher Level Chemistry specialist lives in one of them is small, and distance is the filter that hides that fact.

So this page is organised around content. It sets out what the Diploma assessment actually consists of, where the marks sit, which command terms examiners use and what each one demands, and what a student should do with a past paper beyond reading it. These are the things a parent cannot easily judge from a tutor profile, and they are the things that determine whether an hour a week changes a grade or just occupies a Tuesday.

The Diploma is six subjects, three usually at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject grade runs from 1 to 7, with up to three further points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix. In the sciences, the internal scientific investigation is 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level — a fifth of the grade decided by a piece of work done months before any examination. In mathematics the exploration carries the same 20%. That single fact reorders what tutoring should prioritise in DP1.

Students in this community mostly reach the Diploma through the IB continuum school inside the gates, which has a specific consequence: cohorts are relatively small, so a subject is taught by one teacher and a student who does not click with that teacher's approach has no second option within the school. That is the most common reason a Sustainable City family engages a tutor, and it is a legitimate one. The tutor is not replacing the teacher; they are providing the second explanation.

Delivery is online, and we say so plainly rather than leaving it to the small print. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; household visits are a service we run in India only. Lessons here are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard and past-paper questions on screen. The practical effect of that model in a community this size is that the pool of available Higher Level specialists stops being a function of who lives near Al Qudra Road, and starts being a function of who teaches the course your child is sitting. That is the trade this page is arguing for, and the rest of it is the evidence.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages of the IB continuum are tutored here, and the syllabus demands differ sharply between them. What follows is what is actually assessed at each stage rather than a description of the educational philosophy.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Every Middle Years subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, and converted to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries. Criterion A is usually knowing and understanding; the later criteria cover inquiry, communication and reflection depending on the subject group. A student who knows the content and sits on a 4 is almost always losing marks on the criteria that are not about content.

In a continuum school like the one inside The Sustainable City, MYP grades feed directly into Diploma subject-level decisions. A student aiming at Higher Level sciences needs the criterion C and D marks, not just criterion A, because that is where the scientific investigation skills the Diploma examines at 20% are first built.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Two years, six subjects, external papers plus an internal assessment in nearly every subject. In the sciences the papers are split into a multiple-choice and data-analysis section and a longer written paper, with the internal investigation at 20%. In mathematics there are two or three papers depending on level plus the exploration. Grade bands move year to year, so the useful target is a mark profile rather than a boundary.

UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session, and every internal deadline your child faces is set by the school months ahead of it. For a student here, the practical implication is that the internal assessment work has to be timetabled against the school's deadline rather than against the examination, which is a different and much earlier date.

COREAges 16-19 · Across both years

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a prescribed-title essay. The Extended Essay is an independent piece of up to 4,000 words with a supervisor and formal reflection sessions. Together they yield up to three points on a published matrix. Neither is taught as content, which is why both are routinely underestimated until the deadline is close.

The single most useful core session is the earliest one, spent narrowing a research question from something unanswerable to something that fits 4,000 words and has accessible sources. IB Gram will give feedback on a student's own draft and question their reasoning; it will not write, rewrite or supply any part of an Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the syllabus detail that matters per subject: the components, the weightings where they are published, and the specific place marks are lost. This is the level of specificity a tutoring enquiry should start from.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic structure dominate. Higher Level adds a third paper that is an extended investigative problem, rewarding students who write a structured argument rather than a sequence of results. The exploration carries 20% and is assessed partly on mathematical communication, where notation discipline earns more than ambition.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology is assumed throughout, and the recurring failure is presenting a calculator output as an answer rather than as a step requiring interpretation. Statistics, modelling and real-data analysis carry the paper. Higher Level adds substantially more on matrices, graph theory and complex modelling than students expect.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes run from space, time and motion through the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour and fields to nuclear and quantum physics. Marks go missing on uncertainty propagation and on explanations that describe what happens without naming the mechanism. The scientific investigation is 20% at both levels.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organised around Structure and Reactivity rather than the older topic list. Energetics sign errors, mechanism arrows drawn from the wrong species and equilibrium questions answered qualitatively when a calculation was demanded are the reliable mark-losers. The internal investigation is 20%.

Biology

HL and SL

Built around unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. Volume rather than difficulty is the obstacle. Data-based questions reward reading the axes and the units before the stem, and terminology precision separates a 5 from a 7 more than recall does.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is guided analysis of unseen texts, Paper 2 a comparative essay on studied works, plus an individual oral and, at Higher Level, a written essay. The oral is where strong speakers still lose marks, because the global issue must be demonstrably present in both extracts rather than asserted over them.

Economics

HL and SL

Three commentaries on published news articles form the internal assessment, each within a word limit and each requiring a diagram that is actually used in the analysis. Students lose marks summarising the article instead of applying theory. Higher Level extension topics and the quantitative paper need separate drilling.

Business Management

HL and SL

A case-study subject where the command term governs the ceiling. An accurate answer written to the wrong command term sits in the lowest band. The internal assessment requires genuine organisational material, and students who invent figures to make the analysis tidy lose marks for exactly that.

Computer Science

HL and SL

The internal solution is a working product plus documentation, and the documentation carries more of the marks than the code. Written papers reward precise vocabulary on data structures, abstraction and networking. Fluent coders often produce the weakest design records, which is where tutoring should start.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

First language and additional language

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. These grades sit alongside Diploma subjects on the report and are often the quietest source of lost ground.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a subject-led engagement runs. The right one depends on whether the problem is content, technique or coursework, and those three need different session shapes.

Single-subject weekly, content-led

One subject at a named level, one tutor, one weekly slot, working through the syllabus alongside the school. Used where a student has genuine content gaps rather than technique problems. Sessions track the school's topic order so that the tutoring reinforces the week's teaching instead of running a parallel course the student has to hold separately.

  • Sequenced against the school's own topic order
  • Syllabus sections named explicitly in each session note
  • Written note after every session listing what is now secure
  • Free trial on a topic the student currently finds hardest

Technique and past-paper work

For students who know the material and do not score it. Sessions are built around attempting questions under timing and then dissecting the mark scheme: what the command term demanded, which marks were available, and which were forfeited for reasons unrelated to understanding. This is the mode that moves a 5 to a 6 fastest.

  • Questions attempted under exam timing, not read through
  • Mark schemes dissected line by line against the student's own answer
  • Command-term discipline practised explicitly
  • Error patterns tracked across weeks rather than noted and forgotten

Internal assessment and core supervision support

Sessions on the scientific investigation, mathematics exploration, Economics commentaries or the Extended Essay, working only on the student's own material. The tutor questions the method, points out where a conclusion outruns the data, and reviews against the published criteria. The tutor does not write, redraft to completion or supply text.

  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the official criteria
  • Research question or method narrowing in the earliest sessions
  • Feedback returned as questions and comments, never as text
  • A written record of feedback, which a school may ask to see

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

What a near me search cannot tell you about an IB tutor

  • The useful filter is syllabus and level taught, not kilometres
  • HL Chemistry, Physics and Analysis and Approaches are the scarce subjects
  • No UAE home visits; delivery is live one-to-one video
  • Shared whiteboard, screen-shared past papers, optional recording

A proximity search ranks by an attribute that has almost no bearing on whether a Diploma grade moves. What matters is whether the tutor has taught this syllabus through examination cycles, can recite what the criteria reward, and knows the difference between an answer that is correct and an answer that scores. None of that correlates with how far their flat is from Al Qudra Road.

In a community of around five hundred villas with one school inside it, the local supply problem is concrete rather than theoretical. Higher Level Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches are the three subjects Sustainable City families ask about most, and they are precisely the subjects where a genuinely current specialist is scarce anywhere in Dubai. Filtering that scarce pool further by driving distance is how families end up with a well-meaning generalist and a disappointing second term.

So, stated plainly: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, and no tutor will come to an address in The Sustainable City. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, screen-shared past-paper questions and an optional recording. Home tutoring exists in our India operation only. What that buys a family here is the ability to choose on syllabus rather than on distance, which for Higher Level subjects is the entire difference in outcome. It also removes the two unpaid journeys at either end of a visit, which is why a session can start in the late afternoon rather than at eight in the evening when nobody learns anything useful.

02

Where the marks actually are in a Diploma subject

Most families discover the internal assessment weighting too late. In the Diploma sciences, the student's own scientific investigation is 20% of the final grade at both Standard and Higher Level. In mathematics, the exploration is also 20%. In Economics, three commentaries on published articles form the internal assessment. These are pieces of work completed months before any examination, under a school deadline, and in several subjects they are the single largest discrete chunk of the grade.

The strategic consequence is uncomfortable but clear. A DP1 student who treats the internal assessment as an administrative task and the examination as the real event has already conceded a fifth of several grades. Conversely, a student who gets the investigation right has banked marks that cannot be lost on a bad morning in May. For families deciding when tutoring is worth paying for, that argues strongly for DP1 rather than DP2, which is the opposite of what most families do.

The table below sets out the structure in the subjects most requested in this community. Weightings are published by the IB and are stable across a syllabus cycle, but the IB does revise courses, so a student should confirm the current structure with their subject teacher rather than relying on any website, including this one. What does not change is the principle: find out what each component is worth before deciding where the tutoring hours go. A parent who can name the weighting of every component in their child's six subjects is already making better decisions than one who is reacting to a report card.

WHERE THE GRADE SITS, BY SUBJECT GROUP

03

Command terms: the vocabulary that decides the band

More Diploma marks are lost to command terms than to ignorance. A student who writes an accurate description when the question said explain has answered a different question, and the mark scheme will not reward the overlap. The command terms are published, they are consistent across subjects, and they are learnable in a handful of sessions — which makes this the highest-return work available in the final terms of a Diploma course.

The pattern we see in students from this community is specific. Strong students, particularly those who have come through the Middle Years Programme in the same school, write fluently and at length. Fluency masks the problem: a well-written paragraph that states rather than justifies scores in the lower band while feeling like a good answer. The fix is mechanical. Underline the command term, write the number of marks next to it, and produce exactly the structure that term requires.

The table below gives the terms that cost the most marks in the subjects this community asks about, what the examiner is looking for, and the error that recurs. It is the kind of thing a student should have on the desk while working through past papers, not something to read once. Full published definitions live in the IB's own subject guides, which your child's teacher can provide; we reference them rather than reproducing them, because those guides are the IB's copyright and a tutoring site handing them out as downloads is doing something a parent should question.

COMMAND TERMS AND THE ERRORS THAT RECUR
Command termWhat the examiner wantsThe error that costs marksTypical mark range

04

The scientific investigation, and why it is where sciences grades are won

Twenty per cent of a Diploma science grade comes from a piece of work the student designs, carries out and writes themselves. It is marked against published criteria covering the research design, the data analysis, the conclusion and the evaluation. Most of the marks lost in this community are lost in the same two places: a research question too broad to answer with the data collected, and an evaluation that lists limitations without explaining how each one affected the result.

The sequencing problem is the real one. Schools set the investigation deadline well before the examinations, usually with a draft stage before that, so the window in which tutoring can help is in DP1 and the first term of DP2. A family that engages a tutor in the second term of DP2 is too late to influence a fifth of the grade in three subjects. This is the single most expensive piece of timing in the Diploma and almost nobody warns parents about it.

What a tutor may do here is bounded and we state it precisely. They may teach the underlying content, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a method is reproducible, point out that a conclusion outruns the data, and comment on writing the student has produced. They may not design the investigation, select the data, write or rewrite any part of the report, or supply a model to be adapted. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments outright; that is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the candidate.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the choice that is really a university decision

This is the most consequential subject decision a Diploma student in this community makes, and it is frequently made for the wrong reason. Applications and Interpretation is not the easy option; it is a different mathematics, weighted towards modelling, statistics and technology use. Analysis and Approaches is weighted towards algebra, calculus and proof. Both exist at Standard and Higher Level, and the Higher Level courses are substantial in different directions.

The decision should be driven by what comes after the Diploma. Engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and many economics and finance degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level. Degrees in business, psychology, design, medicine in some systems, and social sciences generally accept either and sometimes prefer Applications. Because requirements differ by university and change, the only reliable method is to check the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist, early, and work backwards.

Where tutoring genuinely helps is before the choice, not after it. A student whose algebraic fluency is shaky in MYP 5 or early DP1 can be brought to a point where Analysis and Approaches is a real option. Once the choice is locked, tutoring works within it. The table compares the two courses on the dimensions that actually matter for a decision, including how each one feels to a student who prefers process to open-ended problem solving. If a student is putting in effort without marks by the second term, the wrong-fit signal is usually already visible in that row.

How to actually use a past paper

  • Attempt cold and under timing before any mark scheme is opened
  • Record lost marks as reasons, not as a score
  • Classify every lost mark: content, command term, method, arithmetic or time
  • Rework only the recurring categories, then retest the same question type

Almost every family says their child is doing past papers. Almost none describe a process that extracts much from them. Reading a paper, then reading the mark scheme, then feeling broadly reassured is not practice; it is recognition, and recognition collapses under timed conditions. The method that works is slower and less comfortable, and it is most of what a technique-focused tutoring session does.

The sequence we run is: attempt the question cold and under timing, with no notes. Mark it against the official scheme without charity, writing the lost marks as a reason rather than as a number. Classify each lost mark — content not known, command term misread, method not shown, arithmetic, or time. Then rework only the questions in the categories that recur. Four questions processed this way are worth more than a full paper read through, and the classification is what turns practice into a plan.

A note on materials, because it matters legally as well as practically. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright. We reference them and point to the official sources, and your child's school has legitimate access to them. We do not host, reproduce or supply them as downloads, and a tutoring service that offers an unlimited paper bank should prompt a question about where it came from. Working from what the school legitimately holds is both the correct position and, in practice, the papers the school will mark against anyway.

What subject-specialist IB tutoring costs in Dubai, and what the travel premium buys

Take the difference between two numbers rather than the numbers themselves. A qualified subject tutor working online in Dubai is published at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home one-to-one visit, travel included, is published at AED 180 to AED 500, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to AED 500. The gap between those two bands is almost entirely a car journey.

The other gap is the one worth paying for. IB, IGCSE and A Level subject specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and a premium named tutor advertised at AED 650. What separates AED 150 from AED 300 in the online tier is whether the person has taught Higher Level through examination cycles. For a subject where the internal assessment is 20% of the grade, that experience is the thing being bought, and it is not interchangeable with general competence in the subject.

Budget online tutoring sits at AED 33 to AED 65 an hour and has a legitimate use: homework supervision and momentum for a Middle Years student. It is the wrong purchase for a Higher Level paper. All these figures belong to the companies and rate guides that published them and were read in October 2026; they are the market's numbers, not ours. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages, because the right number depends on subject, level and weeks remaining. The next step is a free trial and a quote.

Availability, honesty and what we will not claim

  • Strong coverage in maths, the three sciences, English A, Economics and Business
  • Thinner in some Group 2 languages and Group 6 arts subjects; we will say so
  • No regulator approval, accreditation or partnership is claimed anywhere
  • No star ratings, satisfaction scores or improvement statistics published

Coverage is not uniform and pretending otherwise wastes a family's time. Across Mathematics in both routes, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English A, Economics, Business Management and Computer Science, we can usually match a Higher Level specialist quickly. Coverage thins in some Group 2 languages, in several Group 6 arts subjects, and in a handful of smaller Group 3 options. When it does, we say what we can offer and how long a match would take rather than placing an approximate tutor into the slot.

On regulators, the position is narrow and deliberate. Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah has SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education supervises Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. IB Gram holds no permit, approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them, nor from the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and has no UAE office. An individual tutoring privately in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

On evidence, we publish no star rating, satisfaction percentage or improvement statistic. Competitors in this market publish self-asserted ratings that contradict their own page text, and a figure without a sample size, a date and a method is a marketing claim rather than evidence. What a family can check here instead: the AED figures name their publisher, the regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae, and the academic honesty boundary is stated specifically enough to hold us to it.

Where we tutor

Where students in this part of Dubai actually come from

The Sustainable City sits off Al Qudra Road between Dubai Investments Park and the Dubailand villa belt. These are the neighbourhoods its students share schools and carpools with, and what each tends to need from a subject tutor.

The Sustainable City

Five residential clusters with a school inside the community, so cohorts are small and a student usually has one teacher per Diploma subject. That is the most common reason families here want a second explanation of the same syllabus.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road, with IB provision of its own. Demand from here skews towards Middle Years criterion coaching and early Diploma subject choice rather than final-year examination technique.

Mudon

A villa community whose school runs go outward, so students are home later and subject sessions land after 5.30pm. Higher Level maths and physics are the subjects requested most often from this side.

Remraam

Apartment-led and close enough to share informal tutor recommendations with this community. Sibling bookings in different year groups on the same evening are common and cost nothing extra online.

Arabian Ranches 3

A young secondary cohort growing quickly, with demand concentrated in the transition from IGCSE into Diploma year one, where the jump in independent written work catches students out.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense school cluster. Students here often train several evenings a week, so a subject plan has to fit into one protected slot rather than spreading across the week.

Dubai Hills Estate and DAMAC Hills

Up the corridor, with the most competitive subject-choice conversations in this part of Dubai. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the single most requested subject from these communities.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, the level and the last marked piece

The most useful opening message names the subject, whether it is Standard or Higher Level, and what the most recent marked assessment scored. A photograph of a marked paper is worth three paragraphs of description, because it shows where marks were lost rather than which topics feel hard.

  2. 02

    A short diagnostic conversation

Fifteen minutes to establish which components have been sat, whether the internal assessment is underway, what the school has said, and which questions the student avoids. This is also where we say whether the problem looks like content, technique or coursework, because those need different tutors.

  3. 03

A free trial on a genuine weakness

Run by the tutor who would continue, on the hardest current topic rather than a safe demonstration. It ends with the tutor naming what they would address first and why, in syllabus language. If the match is wrong, say so and we will propose someone else rather than defending the first choice.

  4. 04

A written plan in syllabus terms

You receive the sequence of sessions named by syllabus section and component, the between-session work, and what each stage is meant to fix. A plan written in generalities cannot be held to account; one written in syllabus references can be checked against the next marked piece.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with an error log

Each session ends with a note recording what was covered and, specifically, which error categories recurred. Over a month that log shows whether the same mistakes are disappearing. If they are not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours.

Online delivery means your child is matched to someone who teaches that exact subject at that exact level, rather than to the nearest available generalist. In Higher Level sciences and Analysis and Approaches, that single difference is most of what determines whether the hour is useful.

Mark schemes worked explicitly

Sessions dissect why an answer scored what it scored: which command term applied, which marks were available, which were forfeited for reasons unrelated to understanding. That is where most of the recoverable marks in a Diploma subject sit.

Internal assessment timing taken seriously

A fifth of the grade in sciences and mathematics is decided before any examination, under a school deadline. We say so early, because families who learn it in the second term of DP2 have already lost the chance to influence it.

A clear academic honesty boundary

Tutors teach, question and critique the student's own work. They do not design an investigation, write or redraft a report, or supply model answers to adapt, and we do not source completed coursework. Feedback given is recorded in case a school asks.

Figures and sources, not adjectives

Every AED figure here names its publisher and the month it was read. Regulator descriptions are quoted from u.ae. We publish no ratings, no satisfaction percentages and no improvement statistics, because a number without a method is not evidence.

An honest no when coverage is thin

In niche Diploma subjects we will tell you what we can offer and how long a match would take, rather than placing an approximate tutor. For a subject with a coursework component, an out-of-date tutor is worse than none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

Does it matter that an IB tutor is not physically near The Sustainable City?+

For a Diploma subject, distance is close to irrelevant and can be actively harmful as a filter. What determines whether a grade moves is whether the tutor has taught that syllabus at that level through examination cycles and knows what the criteria reward. Filtering a scarce pool of Higher Level specialists by driving distance usually produces a well-meaning generalist. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes at all; lessons are one-to-one over live video, which is what allows the match to be made on syllabus rather than on postcode.

How much of a Diploma science grade comes from the internal investigation?+

Twenty per cent at both Standard and Higher Level, from a scientific investigation the student designs, carries out and writes. It is marked against published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Because the school sets its deadline months before the examinations, this is the part of the grade most families discover too late to influence. If you are deciding when tutoring is worth paying for in a science subject, that weighting argues for the first Diploma year rather than the second.

Which command terms cost IB students the most marks?+

Explain, evaluate and discuss, in that order. Explain requires a causal mechanism, and students routinely describe what happens instead of why, which earns the description marks and none of the explanation ones. Evaluate requires a supported judgement, and a list of advantages and disadvantages without a conclusion caps the band. Discuss requires multiple perspectives, so arguing one side thoroughly scores lower than a balanced answer written less fluently. The fix is mechanical: underline the command term and write the mark allocation beside it before answering.

Should my son take Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation?+

Decide it from what comes after the Diploma rather than from which looks easier, because Applications is not the easy option, only a different mathematics. Engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and quantitative economics degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Business, psychology, design and most social sciences generally accept either. Requirements vary by institution and change, so check the published admissions pages of the specific universities on the shortlist. If fluency is the obstacle rather than preference, that is fixable before the choice is locked, not after.

What is the right way to use past papers for an IB subject?+

Attempt the question cold and under timing with no notes, then mark it against the official scheme without charity, recording each lost mark as a reason rather than as a score. Classify every lost mark as content not known, command term misread, method not shown, arithmetic, or time. Then rework only the categories that recur and retest the same question type. Four questions processed this way beat a whole paper read through alongside the mark scheme, which builds recognition rather than performance.

Where exactly does a tutor's help on the scientific investigation have to stop?+

Yes, within a boundary worth stating explicitly. A tutor may teach the underlying content, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a method is reproducible, point out that a conclusion outruns the data, and comment on writing the student produced. A tutor may not design the investigation, choose the data, write or rewrite any part of the report, or supply a model to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments; buying one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the student, not the seller.

Why do students in a small school cohort need an outside tutor more often?+

Because there is usually one teacher per Diploma subject. In a large central Dubai school a student who does not follow one teacher's approach may have a parallel class with a different one. In a smaller community school there is no second option inside the building, so the second explanation has to come from outside. That is the most common and most legitimate reason families in this community engage a tutor, and it is not a criticism of the teaching. The tutor supplements rather than replaces.

How many weekly hours does a Higher Level subject realistically need?+

One hour a week per subject is the normal starting point, rising to two in the weeks before a mock block or an internal assessment deadline. The limit is not money but absorption: a Diploma student already carries six subjects, the core, the mandatory UAE subjects and usually a sport. Three tutored hours a week typically produces fatigue and incomplete between-session work. We would rather begin with one subject, establish that the error patterns are moving, and add only when a diagnosis justifies it.

Do you supply IB past papers, mark schemes and subject guides?+

No, and you should be cautious of anyone who offers an unlimited bank of them. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' copyright. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from material your child's school has legitimate access to. During sessions tutors use questions on screen and the official criteria as published. A service offering wholesale downloads invites a reasonable question about provenance, and in some cases about unreleased material.

My daughter writes well but keeps scoring 5. What is usually going on?+

Almost always command terms and structure rather than knowledge. Fluent writers produce paragraphs that state a position confidently without justifying it, which reads well and scores in the middle band. The diagnosis takes about two sessions: attempt long-answer questions under timing, then compare the answer with the mark scheme line by line to see which specific marks were available and unclaimed. Once a student sees that the lost marks are structural, the correction is fast, and it is the quickest route from a 5 to a 6.

Is the Extended Essay something a subject tutor should be involved in?+

Yes, early and in a narrow role. The highest-value session is the first one, spent narrowing a research question from something unanswerable into something that fits 4,000 words with accessible sources. After that, a tutor can explain what the criteria reward, discuss sources, question whether an argument holds, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, rewrite or supply text. Your school's supervisor runs the formal process including the reflection sessions, and nothing a tutor does should bypass it.

What does an IB subject specialist cost online in Dubai?+

Published rates put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200, and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. Those are market figures read in October 2026 and belong to the companies that published them. IB Gram does not publish an hourly list on these pages; we quote after a free trial, for the actual subject and level.

Which IB subjects do you cover less well?+

Coverage is strong in Mathematics in both routes, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English A, Economics, Business Management and Computer Science at both levels. It thins in several Group 2 languages, some Group 6 arts subjects and a few smaller Group 3 options. In those cases we tell you what is available, how long a match would take and when availability is likely, instead of filling the slot with someone approximate. In a subject with a coursework component, a tutor who is a syllabus revision behind is worse than no tutor.

Do you claim any IB or KHDA accreditation?+

No. IB Gram is not IB-accredited, not an IB World School, not KHDA-approved, not ADEK-approved and holds no Cambridge or Pearson partnership, nor any UAE office. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence for training institutes with physical premises in Dubai, and several tutoring sites use wording that implies they hold one when they do not. We describe what each regulator governs because it helps you read your child's school reports, not to borrow authority we have not earned.

How soon can a Higher Level specialist start after we enquire?+

For mainstream Higher Level subjects, usually within a few days: a short diagnostic conversation, a free trial lesson with the tutor who would continue, then a written plan in syllabus terms. Niche subjects take longer and we will tell you how long rather than book a placeholder session. If a school deadline makes the timing urgent, say so in the first message, because it changes which tutors we approach and in what order they are asked.

Send the subject, the level and the last marked paper

The fastest way to a useful first session is three pieces of information: the subject, whether it is Standard or Higher Level, and a photograph of the most recent marked assessment. That shows where marks are actually being lost, which is rarely where a student thinks they are. We will arrange a free trial lesson with the tutor who would continue, on a genuine weakness rather than a demonstration topic, and follow it with a written plan in syllabus terms. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE. If we cannot match the subject properly, we will say so.
