IB Maths Tutor in The Sustainable City

Families looking for an IB maths tutor in The Sustainable City are usually also looking at Arabian Ranches, Mudon or Motor City, because the school run and the tutor search cross the same roads. This page makes that comparison explicitly: what each neighbourhood changes about schools, commutes and local tutor supply, and why the sensible answer for mathematics turns out to be the same from every one of them. It then covers the Analysis and Approaches decision, the exploration criteria, and where marks go.

  • Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, both at HL and SL
  • Exploration criteria worked by letter, with the mark allocation named
  • Tutors matched to the course and level, not to a driving radius
  • Free trial lesson on a genuine weakness, with the tutor who would continue

IB & IGCSE in The Sustainable City

The comparison families here are really making

Almost every mathematics enquiry from this part of Dubai arrives with a second community attached to it. A family in The Sustainable City is comparing its own school against one in Arabian Ranches. A family in Mudon has just moved from Motor City. Somebody in Remraam is weighing a place at a school in Dubai Investments Park against a longer run up the E311. Those comparisons are genuine and they matter for school choice. For mathematics tutoring, they resolve to the same answer, and it is worth explaining why rather than pretending each neighbourhood needs a different page.

The reason is supply. There are two IB mathematics routes, each at two levels, so four distinct courses. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a serious piece of mathematics with a third paper that is an extended investigative problem. The number of people in Dubai who teach that course to examination standard is modest, and they are not distributed evenly across villa communities. Whether you live inside The Sustainable City's car-free clusters or in a Ranches cul-de-sac fifteen minutes away, the local pool for that specific course is effectively the same: small.

What does differ between these communities is logistics, and the differences are real. A child at the school inside The Sustainable City is home far earlier than one commuting to Motor City or Al Barsha, which moves the first usable session time by as much as two hours. Tutors quoting for home visits price the Al Qudra Road run differently from the Ranches run. Those variations are set out in a table further down, because they change when a session happens even when they do not change who should teach it.

Mathematics also has a structural feature that reorders the whole tutoring question. The exploration — the student's own piece of mathematical writing — is 20% of the final grade at both Higher and Standard Level in both routes, and it is marked against five criteria worth twenty marks in total. It is submitted months before any examination, to a school deadline. A family that only thinks about mathematics tutoring in the final term has already conceded a fifth of the grade without ever seeing a paper.

Delivery is stated plainly rather than buried: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor will arrive at an address in The Sustainable City, Mudon or Arabian Ranches. Lessons are one-to-one and live over video, with a shared whiteboard where working is written out by hand and seen as it happens. Home visits exist in our India operation only. For mathematics in particular the online format loses almost nothing, because the whole subject is the working on the page.

At a glance

  • Four distinct courses: AA and AI, each at Higher and Standard Level
  • The exploration is 20% of the grade and 20 marks across five criteria
  • Local tutor supply for HL AA is thin in every Dubailand community alike
  • What changes between neighbourhoods is session timing, not tutor choice
  • Delivery is live one-to-one video with a shared whiteboard; no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics runs through the whole continuum, and the preparation that makes a Higher Level route possible happens years before the choice is made. These are the stages we teach and what each one decides.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years mathematics

Assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student can be numerically competent and still sit on a 4 because the investigation and communication criteria are not about getting an answer. Extended mathematics in the final MYP years is the realistic preparation for Higher Level work later.

In a continuum school such as the one inside The Sustainable City, MYP mathematics grades feed directly into the Diploma route conversation. A student hoping to keep Higher Level Analysis and Approaches open needs algebraic fluency secured in MYP 4, because by the second term of MYP 5 the choice is being locked and there is no time left to change the evidence.

DP-AAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Algebra, functions, calculus, trigonometry, proof, and statistics, with the emphasis on analytic method. Standard Level sits two papers; Higher Level sits three, the third being an extended investigative problem that rewards a sustained written argument rather than a sequence of answers. The exploration carries 20% at both levels and is assessed partly on mathematical communication.

This is the course Dubai families ask about most when a degree in engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science or quantitative economics is in view. Published requirements differ by university and change, so the only reliable method is to read the admissions pages of the specific institutions on the shortlist rather than relying on general advice, including ours.

DP-AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Modelling, statistics, data interpretation and applied contexts, with technology assumed throughout. It is a different mathematics rather than an easier one: Higher Level contains substantial work on matrices, graph theory and complex modelling. The recurring failure is treating a calculator output as an answer rather than as a step that still requires interpretation and justification.

Students in this belt who switch from Analysis and Approaches to Applications partway through DP1 usually do so for the right reason and too late. The switch is far easier in the first term than the second, because the exploration and the accumulated course content both have to be reset, and schools have their own deadlines for changing a registered course.

BRIDGEAges 15-17 · The transition year

IGCSE or MYP into Diploma mathematics

The step into Diploma mathematics is the sharpest in the programme, particularly into Higher Level Analysis and Approaches from a Core or Foundation IGCSE tier. The gap is rarely conceptual; it is fluency. Students who have to think about rearranging an expression cannot simultaneously think about the calculus question that expression sits inside, and the papers assume both happen at once.

Families moving between communities in this belt often change schools and boards at the same time, which means a student may arrive in DP1 from a different mathematics sequence entirely. A short bridging block over the summer or in the first term closes that gap far more cheaply than remediation in the second year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics is the subject on this page, so what follows is the detail by course and by the subjects that depend on it. The specific weakness matters more than the subject name when booking.

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level

HL

Three papers, with Paper 3 an extended investigative problem. Proof, calculus and complex algebraic manipulation dominate. Marks are lost on incomplete justification in proof questions and on calculus applied without checking the domain. Paper 3 rewards students who have practised writing out a sustained argument.

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level

SL

Two papers covering the same areas with less depth. The commonest pattern is a student who can execute a procedure but cannot select which procedure applies to an unfamiliar question. Practice on mixed, unlabelled question sets fixes that faster than more topic drills.

Applications and Interpretation, Higher Level

HL

Substantially more demanding than students expect, with matrices, graph theory and complex modelling. The technology-assumed design means the examiner wants interpretation, not output. Statistical tests need to be chosen and justified rather than performed and reported.

Applications and Interpretation, Standard Level

SL

Weighted towards modelling, statistics and real-data work. Marks disappear in the sentences around the numbers: a correct regression with no comment on validity, or a prediction made outside the range of the data without noting the problem.

The mathematics exploration

HL and SL, both routes

Twenty per cent of the grade and twenty marks across five criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and the use of mathematics. The most common cause of a low mark is a topic too ambitious for the student to handle rigorously rather than a topic too simple.

Middle Years mathematics

Standard and extended

Criterion-marked rather than graded on content alone. The investigating patterns criterion is where capable students lose ground, because describing a pattern is not the same as justifying a general rule. Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the honest preparation for Higher Level later.

Physics, where the mathematics is the obstacle

HL and SL

A substantial share of lost physics marks are mathematical: rearranging before substituting, handling powers of ten, propagating uncertainty. Students whose physics improves after mathematics tutoring usually never had a physics problem at all.

Chemistry calculations

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and titration calculations carry sign conventions and unit conversions that punish approximate arithmetic. The fix is procedural discipline rather than more chemistry, which is why a mathematics tutor sometimes raises a chemistry grade.

Economics, quantitative components

HL

Higher Level Economics includes quantitative questions that reward exactly the skills Analysis and Approaches builds: reading a function, calculating elasticity accurately, and interpreting what the number means in context rather than restating it.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Algorithmic thinking and complexity reasoning depend on comfort with mathematical abstraction. Students who find recursion unintuitive often need the underlying mathematics rather than more code, and that is a diagnosable distinction rather than a guess.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes for mathematics tuition, and the choice depends on whether the problem is fluency, the exploration or paper technique. Those are different jobs and they are not well served by the same session pattern.

Weekly fluency work

For students whose difficulty is speed and accuracy in manipulation rather than understanding of concepts. Sessions are short, dense and repetitive by design: rearranging, factorising, differentiating standard forms, handling indices, until those operations stop consuming attention. It is the least glamorous mathematics tutoring and the most reliably effective at Standard Level.

  • Same tutor, same weekly slot, in Gulf Standard Time
  • Deliberately repetitive manipulation practice with timed sets
  • Measured by speed and accuracy, not by topics covered
  • Free trial on the student's current weakest operation

Exploration support, early

Sessions on the mathematics exploration, working on the student's own topic and writing. The highest-value work happens at the start: testing whether the chosen topic can actually be handled with the mathematics the student commands, which is what decides the use-of-mathematics criterion months before anything is written.

  • Criterion-by-criterion review against the published criteria
  • Topic feasibility tested before any writing begins
  • Feedback as questions and comments on the student's own draft
  • No text written, rewritten or supplied by the tutor at any stage

Paper technique blocks, including Paper 3

For Higher Level students in the final terms, built around full paper sections under timing and, for Analysis and Approaches, the extended investigative problem specifically. Paper 3 is a different skill from the other two papers and most students have practised it least, which makes it the clearest remaining source of marks.

  • Paper sections attempted under timing, then dissected
  • Paper 3 extended problems practised as sustained written arguments
  • Method-mark discipline enforced on every question
  • Weekend two-hour blocks where a weekday hour is not enough

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Sustainable City

01

The Sustainable City against the next community over, honestly set out

Here is the comparison without the marketing. For mathematics specifically, the thing that varies between these neighbourhoods is when a session can start and what a visiting tutor would charge to get there. The thing that does not vary is who should teach Higher Level Analysis and Approaches, because the pool of people who teach it to examination standard is small across the whole of Dubai and is not clustered in any one villa community. Reading the table below usually settles the question for a family that arrived expecting a different answer.

The timing column is where real differences live. A child attending the school inside The Sustainable City is home by mid-afternoon, so a 3.30pm start is available. A child commuting from Mudon or Remraam to a school in Motor City or Al Barsha is not realistically free until half past five, and by seven in the evening the quality of a calculus session drops sharply. That is a genuine difference between neighbourhoods and it should drive whether you book a weekday hour or a weekend block.

The supply column is where families expect a difference and find none. Arabian Ranches has a denser informal tutor network than this community does, and that network circulates recommendations for general support and primary-level help, which is where most demand sits. It does not reliably produce someone who has taught the Higher Level third paper. So the Ranches family and the Sustainable City family end up at the same conclusion from different starting points, which is the honest version of this comparison.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: decide it from the degree

This is the decision that most affects a Dubai student's options, and it is routinely made on the wrong basis. Applications and Interpretation is not the easier course; it is a different mathematics, weighted towards modelling, statistics and technology use, and its Higher Level is genuinely demanding. Analysis and Approaches is weighted towards algebra, calculus and proof. Choosing between them by perceived difficulty tends to produce a student who dislikes the course they chose and performs below their capability in it.

The reliable method is to work backwards from the degree. Engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and quantitative economics commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level. Business, psychology, design, architecture and most social sciences generally accept either, and some actively prefer the statistical grounding Applications gives. Medicine and life sciences vary widely by country and institution. Because published requirements differ and are revised, the only safe approach is to read the admissions pages of the specific universities on the shortlist, early enough to act on what they say.

Where tutoring genuinely changes the outcome is before the choice is locked. A student whose algebraic fluency is shaky in MYP 5 or the first weeks of DP1 can be brought to a point where Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a real option rather than a gamble. Once the course is registered, the switch becomes a school administrative matter with its own deadline, and in the second term it usually means resetting the exploration as well. Earlier is cheaper here, as it is in most of the Diploma.

03

Higher Level against Standard Level, on the dimensions that decide it

The Higher and Standard Level decision is separate from the route decision and is often taken too quickly. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches adds depth across algebra, calculus and proof, and adds a third paper which is an extended investigative problem rather than a longer version of the other two. That paper is the part students have practised least and the part that most clearly separates outcomes, because it rewards a sustained written argument rather than a series of discrete answers.

Teaching hours are the practical constraint. Higher Level courses carry more contact time at school, and a student taking three Higher Levels alongside the core is working to a genuinely full timetable. Adding two tutored hours a week on top of that is frequently counterproductive: the between-session work does not get done, and the student arrives at each session having forgotten the last. One well-used hour with real work between sessions beats two hours that displace the work.

The right-fit signals are observable by the end of the first term. A student suited to Higher Level enjoys the problem that does not resolve immediately and will sit with it. A student unsuited to it does the exercises accurately and stalls at anything unfamiliar. That distinction is visible in how they behave in front of an unseen question, which is exactly what a diagnostic session examines, and it is far better established in the first term of DP1 than in the second.

The exploration: twenty marks, five criteria, and where they go

A fifth of an IB mathematics grade comes from the exploration, a piece of independent mathematical writing marked out of twenty across five criteria. Almost nothing in this market explains those criteria, which is strange, because knowing what each one rewards changes how a student chooses a topic. The single most common cause of a disappointing exploration mark in this community is a topic that was too ambitious for the mathematics the student could actually handle rigorously.

Criterion weighting should drive topic choice. The use of mathematics criterion carries the largest share of marks, and it rewards mathematics that is correct, relevant and commensurate with the level of the course. A student who attempts something far beyond the syllabus and handles it loosely scores worse than a student who takes a modest topic and treats it rigorously. Personal engagement and reflection reward genuine ownership and genuine critique, which cannot be manufactured in the final week.

What a tutor may do here is bounded and we say it precisely. They may explain each criterion, test whether a topic is feasible, question whether a step is justified, point out that a conclusion does not follow, and comment on writing the student produced. They may not choose the topic, perform the mathematics, write or rewrite any part of the exploration, or supply a model to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed internal assessments; buying one is academic misconduct and the consequence falls on the candidate.

Where IB maths marks are actually lost, topic by topic

Mathematics is unusually diagnosable. Unlike an essay subject, a lost mark in mathematics almost always has a single identifiable cause, and the causes repeat. In this community the pattern is consistent enough to be worth publishing: fluency failures in manipulation, method marks forfeited by not writing working down, calculator answers presented without interpretation, and domain or units ignored. None of those are conceptual gaps and all of them are correctable within a term.

The most expensive habit is answering without showing method. Both routes award method marks on multi-step questions, and a student who writes only a final answer forfeits every one of them when the answer is wrong. For a student under time pressure this feels efficient and is the opposite. Correcting it takes several weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, because it is a habit rather than a misunderstanding, which is precisely the kind of thing weekly sessions are good at.

The second most expensive is calculator dependence in Applications and Interpretation. The course assumes technology, which students read as permission to produce outputs. The examiner wants the output interpreted, justified and bounded: was the regression appropriate, is the prediction inside the range of the data, what does the gradient mean in the context given. That is a writing skill attached to a mathematical one, and it is where Applications candidates most often leave marks on the table. Three to six weeks of writing practice alongside the mathematics usually closes it, because the student already has the result and only needs to learn what the examiner wants said about it.

COMMON MARK LOSSES IN IB MATHEMATICS

What a maths tutor costs here, and whether the neighbourhood changes it

The short answer is that the rate is a function of the tutor, not the postcode — with one exception, which is travel. Published Dubai market figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with one agency advertising IB from AED 200. IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650. Budget online tutoring runs AED 33 to AED 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65.

In-home visiting rates are published at AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to AED 500. That is where the neighbourhood does matter: a tutor pricing an Al Qudra Road run and a tutor pricing a trip into Arabian Ranches are pricing different journeys, and both are pricing them into the hour. Monthly packages seen in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits.

For Higher Level mathematics specifically, the tier that matters is the specialist one, because the thing being bought is judgement about the third paper and the exploration rather than knowledge of the content. Every figure here belongs to the company or rate guide that published it and was read in October 2026; they are the market's numbers, not ours. IB Gram publishes no hourly list on these pages and quotes after a free trial, against the actual course and level.

Academic honesty in a subject where the work is checkable

  • A tutor teaches, questions and critiques the student's own exploration
  • No topic selection, no mathematics performed, no text written or redrafted
  • We do not sell, source or supply completed internal assessments
  • Past papers and mark schemes are referenced, never hosted or distributed

Mathematics has a particular honesty profile. A finished exploration written by somebody else is often detectable, because the mathematics in it does not match the mathematics the student demonstrates in class, and a supervisor who has taught that student for a year notices. Teachers also conduct the formal process around the exploration, including progress checks. So the practical risk of outsourced work in this subject is high as well as the ethical cost being unacceptable.

The boundary we work to is explicit. A tutor may teach content, explain each exploration criterion, test whether a topic is feasible at the level of the course, question whether a step is justified, point out an unsupported conclusion, and give feedback on writing the student produced. A tutor may not select the topic, carry out the mathematics, write or redraft any part of the submission, or supply a specimen to be adapted. The test is whether a line in the final piece exists because the tutor wrote it.

The same applies to materials. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright, and we reference them rather than hosting or distributing them. Sessions work from questions on screen and from the published criteria, with the school's own legitimate access as the source. A tutoring service offering an unlimited paper bank invites a reasonable question about provenance, and in some cases about material that has not been released. The school's own holdings are also the papers the student will be marked against, so they are the better source in practice as well as the correct one.

08

Scheduling mathematics around a Dubai week

  • Fluency work benefits from two shorter sessions rather than one long one
  • Exploration work benefits from thinking time, so fortnightly can be correct
  • Weekend blocks suit Higher Level paper practice in commuting households
  • Ramadan sessions move after Iftar with the same tutor retained

Mathematics tolerates a weekly rhythm better than most subjects and tolerates lateness worse. Fluency work depends on frequency, so a shorter session twice a week often beats one long one; exploration work depends on thinking time between sessions, so a fortnightly pattern can be right. What does not work is a late-evening calculus session after a long school run, which is why the neighbourhood comparison earlier in this page matters practically rather than just descriptively.

The UAE calendar shapes the rest. The working week runs Monday to Friday with a half-day Friday, leaving Saturday and Sunday as the only full days, which is why weekend blocks suit Higher Level paper work in households where weekday evenings are taken by sport or by a long commute. During Ramadan school hours shorten and the useful window moves after Iftar; a mathematics session at that time is frequently better than any afternoon slot during that month.

We hold slots in Gulf Standard Time, move them after Iftar through Ramadan with the same tutor, and pause blocks during a school's own examination fortnight, when additional sessions produce fatigue rather than marks. We do not rotate students between tutors to fill a diary. In mathematics in particular, a tutor who knows which manipulation a student gets wrong under pressure is carrying information that takes weeks to rebuild with somebody new, and that information is most of what makes the fourth session more useful than the first.

Where we tutor

This community against the ones families compare it with

The Sustainable City sits on Al Qudra Road, and every family here has looked at least once at the communities below. Each entry names what genuinely differs for a mathematics session, which is usually timing rather than availability.

The Sustainable City

Five residential clusters with car-free inner streets and a school inside the community, so children attending it are home by mid-afternoon. The practical gain for mathematics is a 3.30pm session, when a student can still concentrate on a calculus problem.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Established villa communities with schools on the doorstep and a strong informal tutor network. Local supply looks better here than it is, because recommendations circulate for general tutors rather than for Higher Level Analysis and Approaches specialists.

Arabian Ranches 3

Newer phases with a secondary cohort growing quickly, so the demand for Diploma mathematics is new and outstrips the supply of people who have taught it locally. The transition from IGCSE into DP1 is the request we see most from here.

Mudon

Outward school runs mean students are home later, so the first realistic session is around 5.30pm. For Higher Level mathematics that argues for weekend sessions, when a two-hour block on Paper 3 technique is actually possible.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The nearest dense school cluster, with sports academies that take four evenings a week. Families here more often want a single weekend session than two weekday ones, which suits exploration work better than paper practice.

Dubai Investments Park

Across Al Qudra Road with IB provision of its own. Parents working locally are home earlier, which makes it easier to attend the first session alongside the student and hear the diagnosis first-hand.

Town Square and DAMAC Hills

Further along the Dubailand corridor with their own schools. Mid-year moves between here and The Sustainable City generate bridging work where the mathematics sequence differs between the two schools.

Dubai Hills Estate

Up the corridor, with the most competitive subject-choice conversations in this part of Dubai. Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is the most requested single course from these households, which is a useful indicator of where the supply pressure sits.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the route, the level and the year

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in the second Diploma year is a different engagement from Applications at Standard Level in the first. Those four words decide which tutors we approach. If the exploration is underway, say where it has reached, because that usually becomes the first priority.

  2. 02

Send a marked piece of work

A photograph of a recently marked paper or exploration draft is worth a long description, because mathematics errors are diagnosable from the page. We look for whether the losses are fluency, method, interpretation or genuine conceptual gaps, since those four need different kinds of session.

  3. 03

A free trial on an unseen question

Run by the tutor who would continue, using an unfamiliar question rather than a revision topic, because how a student behaves in front of something unseen is the whole diagnosis. It ends with the tutor naming the first thing they would fix and how long they expect it to take.

  4. 04

A plan with a measurable first target

You receive a short written plan naming the first specific target — showing method on every multi-step question, or narrowing the exploration topic to something feasible — with the sessions and between-session work to reach it. Vague plans cannot be checked; this one can.

Weekly sessions and a tracked error pattern

Each session ends with a note recording which error categories appeared: fluency, method, interpretation, domain or concept. Over a month the pattern either thins or it does not. If it does not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than quietly adding hours to the invoice.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to one of four courses, not to maths

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level are four distinct teaching jobs. Online delivery means your child is matched to someone who teaches their specific course, which no villa community in Dubai can supply locally.

The exploration treated as 20% of the grade

Because it is. We work on the criteria by letter with the mark allocation named, and we start with topic feasibility, which is the decision that determines the use-of-mathematics mark months before anything is written.

Errors diagnosed by category

Mathematics losses are classifiable: fluency, method, interpretation, domain or concept. Naming the category is what makes the next four weeks efficient, and it is why a session note here lists causes rather than topics covered.

An explicit honesty boundary

Tutors explain criteria, test feasibility, question steps and critique the student's own writing. They do not choose the topic, perform the mathematics or write any part of the exploration, and we do not source completed coursework from anyone.

Comparisons made honestly

This page says plainly that the answer for mathematics is the same whether you live in this community or the next one, because local supply for Higher Level is thin everywhere in Dubai. A page that claimed a local advantage it does not have would be easier to write and less useful.

Figures with publishers attached

Every AED band here names who published it and the month it was read. We publish no star ratings, satisfaction scores or improvement statistics, and claim no approval or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK or any board.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Sustainable City: your questions answered

Is it better to find a maths tutor inside The Sustainable City or in Arabian Ranches?+

For IB mathematics, neither, and the comparison is worth retiring. The number of people in Dubai who teach Higher Level Analysis and Approaches to examination standard is small and they are not concentrated in any villa community. Arabian Ranches has a denser informal network, but it circulates general and primary-level recommendations rather than Higher Level specialists. What genuinely differs between the two communities is when a session can start, because school runs differ. IB Gram delivers online one-to-one and sends no tutors to UAE addresses, so the match is made on course rather than location.

How much of the IB maths grade comes from the exploration?+

Twenty per cent at both Higher and Standard Level in both routes, marked out of twenty across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest share at six marks. It is submitted to a school deadline months before any examination, which makes it the part of the grade most often discovered too late to influence. If you are deciding when mathematics tutoring is worth paying for, that weighting argues for the first Diploma year.

My daughter picked Applications because it sounded easier. Was that a mistake?+

Possibly, though not for the reason she expects. Applications is not easier; it is a different mathematics weighted towards modelling, statistics and technology use, and its Higher Level is demanding in its own right. The real risk is to options: engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science and quantitative economics degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Check the published requirements of the specific universities on her shortlist. If a switch is needed, the first term is far easier than the second, because the exploration has to reset too.

What makes the Higher Level third paper different?+

Paper 3 in Analysis and Approaches is an extended investigative problem rather than a longer set of questions. It rewards a sustained written argument: establishing a result, generalising it, justifying each step and carrying structure across several pages. Most students have practised it least because it does not resemble the exercises they do in class, which makes it the clearest remaining source of marks in the final terms. It usually needs six to ten weeks of specific practice, separate from general paper work.

Why does my son lose marks when his answers are right?+

Most commonly because he writes only the final answer. Both routes award method marks across multi-step questions, so a student who shows no working forfeits all of them whenever the answer is wrong, and gains nothing when it is right. It feels efficient under time pressure and is the opposite. Correcting it takes two to four weeks of enforcement rather than explanation, because it is a habit. It is the single cheapest grade improvement available in IB mathematics and is why session notes here track causes rather than topics.

Can a tutor choose my child's exploration topic?+

No, and a tutor who offers to should be declined. The tutor's legitimate role is to explain each criterion, test whether a proposed topic can be handled rigorously with the mathematics the student commands, question whether a step is justified, and comment on writing the student produced. Choosing the topic, performing the mathematics or writing any part of the piece crosses into academic misconduct, and the consequence falls on the candidate rather than the tutor. Supervisors who have taught a student for a year also tend to notice mathematics that is not theirs.

How early should a student start thinking about Higher Level maths?+

In MYP 4 or Year 9, which sounds absurdly early and is not. The constraint on Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is algebraic fluency, and fluency is built by repetition over months rather than taught in a term. A student whose manipulation is secure by the end of MYP 5 has the Higher Level option genuinely open; one who is still thinking about rearranging expressions does not, regardless of ability, because the papers assume manipulation and reasoning happen simultaneously.

Does an online whiteboard really work for a maths session?+

Mathematics is the subject where it works best, because the whole subject is the working on the page and a shared whiteboard shows that working as it is produced. The tutor sees the line where a student hesitates, which is the diagnostic information that matters. Screen-shared questions, annotated step by step, replicate what happens on paper closely. The honest exception is younger children, roughly Year 5 and below, who often need an adult physically present for reasons that have nothing to do with mathematics.

What does an IB maths specialist charge in Dubai?+

Published figures put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour and IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and one premium provider advertising AED 650. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is included. For Higher Level work the specialist tier is what matters, because the purchase is judgement about Paper 3 and the exploration. Those are market figures read in October 2026; we quote after a free trial.

Should we book one long session or two short ones for maths?+

It depends on the problem. Fluency work depends on frequency, so two shorter sessions in a week beat one long one: manipulation improves through repetition spread across days. Exploration work depends on thinking time between sessions, so a fortnightly pattern can be correct. Higher Level paper practice needs an uninterrupted block, which in commuting households usually means a weekend. Naming the problem first is what makes that choice obvious, and it is the first thing a diagnostic session establishes.

My child switched schools mid-year and the maths sequence does not match. What now?+

A bridging block, which is one of the commonest requests in this belt because families move between these communities regularly. Different schools teach topics in different orders, so a mid-year arrival typically has two or three specific unmet topics rather than a general weakness, plus two or three already covered twice. A diagnostic session names which, and the gap usually closes within a term. It matters more than it sounds, because an unmet topic in the first Diploma year compounds into the second.

Do you provide IB maths past papers and mark schemes?+

No. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the IB's copyright. We reference them, cite the official source, and work from material your child's school has legitimate access to, with questions shown on screen during sessions and the published criteria used as written. Be cautious of any service advertising an unlimited paper bank, because it raises a fair question about where the material came from and occasionally about whether it has been released at all.

Is there any point starting maths tutoring in the final term?+

Yes, but the target has to be honest. In the final term the achievable gains are technique: method-mark discipline, time per mark, command-term reading, and for Higher Level students targeted work on the third paper. What is not achievable is covering substantial unmet content, and the exploration is already submitted. A tutor who promises a two-grade lift in that window is selling. We would rather state the realistic target before a booking than defend an unrealistic one afterwards.

Do you claim any IB accreditation for your maths tutors?+

No. IB Gram is not IB-accredited, is not an IB World School, holds no KHDA or ADEK approval, no Cambridge or Pearson partnership, and no UAE office. We also do not describe tutors as IB examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, because that claim is widely made in this market and rarely supported. What we will tell you about any tutor is which course and level they teach, and how long they have taught it to examination.

How long until we can see whether the tutoring is working?+

About four weeks for a fluency or method problem, because those produce visible changes in marked work quickly: the same question type stops failing in the same place. Conceptual gaps take longer, and exploration work is judged against criteria rather than marks until the school assesses it. Each session note records which error categories appeared, so the pattern is visible rather than anecdotal. We publish no improvement statistics, because a figure without a sample size, a date and a method is not evidence.

Four words get the match right

Route, level, year and the exploration's status: Analysis and Approaches or Applications, Higher or Standard, first Diploma year or second, and whether the exploration is unstarted, drafted or submitted. Those four facts decide which tutors we approach, and a photograph of a recently marked paper usually completes the diagnosis. Next is a free trial lesson on an unseen question with the tutor who would continue, then a short written plan with a measurable first target. Lessons run one-to-one over live video into The Sustainable City in Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE, and the same tutor is available whichever community you live in.
